To go through what we did. I think the pandemic has showed us the sacrifices that they give. I think the pandemic has showed us the value and sacrifices that they give. Before leaving, abbas s family gave karim a final, touching gift. A surgical textbook once belonging to abbas, now with a new generation of doctor. Charlie haynes, Bbc News. Time for a look at the weather. Heres nick miller. A Hint Ofjekyll and hyde in our weather at the start of this week, clear skies at times, and although temperatures are below average for this time of year it still feels warm in The Sunshine but the other face of the weather is Torrential Downpours, already bouncing off the panto on the isle of Wight Today with reports from the met office some spots may have had over 100 millimetres of rain from some particularly heavy downpours that have moved through, on the railfor radar. A few showers developing elsewhere in england and wales so there is a risk of flooding from some of these. Some rain in Northern Ireland gradually fading as the afternoon goes on but we will keep a good deal of cloud. In scotland, mostly dry with sunny spells, the Odd Spot of rain from The Cloud in the Northern Isles which cannot be ruled out but in england and wales there are slow moving Torrential Downpours, but the risk of catching them, South East wales, South Midlands, including inTo London, and most places will not get to 20 celsius today. But again, it is ok if you are in some sunshine. Whatever Torrential Downpours have developed in england and wales slowly fade this evening at the second half of the night looks dry, largely clear and temperatures will be lower than this away from the larger towns and city centres, so we are talking single figures in many places and a fresh and bright start on tuesday with a ridge of High Pressure across us, although some showers will get going and we are watching this Weather System heading in from the west slowly and Tomorrow Morning it could produce outbreaks of rain into the isles of Scilly And Cornwall. Tomorrow in scotland, the greater chance of catching a shower compared with today among The Sunny spells, in Northern Ireland a brighter day, a few showers will develop, and in england and where is although most places are dry, there are still a few torrential, slow moving downpours getting going, once again with a risk of flooding and a few more places mayjust reach that 20 celsius mark tomorrow. And then on wednesday that Weather System to the west just then on wednesday that Weather System to the westjust sliding and come a bit more cloud around, chance of Seeing outbreaks of rain early on in westernmost parts and then heavy showers breaking out again. But these more focused across northern areas, Northern Ireland, northern England And Scotland on wednesday. Though a shower is possible anywhere. Into the second half of the week and the weekend, low pressure moving in, windy weather on the southern flank of the low, though not as stormy as last week, thankfully with storm evert, but more rain and showers moving on. But not wet all the time, there will still be some of those sunny spells. Thats all from us. We willjoin hello with your latest sports news. She was momentarily in the silver position, but was pushed down the position and finished in sixth. Her 16 year old twin finished just one place behind her in seventh place. She did have a couple of stumbles on her landings, but a fantastic performance overall from jennifer as well in her first olympics. And Usa Gymnastics have confirmed that gymnast Simone Biles is on the Start List for tomorrows beam final. The four time olympic the four time Olympic Champion had already withdrawn from five events to focus on her Mental Health and wellbeing, including the Womens Team Competition last tuesday after she struggled with the twisties which is losing your sense of direction whilst Mid Air when completeing her vault routine. A World Record has been broken in the Womens Team Pursuit qualifying, but not by Team Gb. It had looked as though katie archibald, Elinor Barker, Josie Knight and Laura Kenny were going to beat the record set by germany earlier, they were half a second faster early on in the race. But it just fell apart at The End for britain. They held out to finish second in qualifying. They will race against the usa in the first round. And the british men qualified fourth fastest in their team pursuit. It means ed clancy, ethan hayter, Ethan Vernon and Ollie Wood will face the fastest team in the first round denmark. The winners of that will then progress to the final. On to athletics and Great Britains Laura Muir eased into the Semi Finals of the 1500 metres as she aims for a first olympic medal. The 28 year old finished second in her heat just behind Canadas Gabriela debues stafford. Muir had the option of contesting both the 800m and 1500m events in tokyo, but opted to focus on the longer distance. She says her Team Mates have already competed and she was desperate to get on the track too. I was so excited to get started. All my flatmates have raised already, so i was itching to get going. So, yes, just really now to get that first round of the way and feel comfortable. The womens 87kg weightlifting is now underway where Team Gb s Emily Campbell is competing in the same category as New Zealander laurel hubbard, who will become the first openly transgender athlete to compete in a different Sex Category at an Olympic Games to the sex that they were born. Its being Seen as controversial because the ioc changed the rules in 2015 Meaning that athletes who have transitioned from male to female can compete in Womens Sport without having had any surgery as long as they have declared their identity as female and kept their testosterone below a Set Level for 12 months. Critics have questioned the inclusion because of the obvious Advantage Hubbard has due to going through male puberty some dispute this. At 43, hubbard will be the third Oldest Lifter in olympic history. The New Zealand Olympics Committee says hubbard is a really important Role Model who opens up a conversation about inclusivity. Canada have beaten the usa womens Football Team for the first time in twenty years, and going through to the final in the process. It finished in a 1 0 victory after ajessica fleming penalty. You can follow on all those stories on the Bbc Sport website. I have turned into rebecca. I couldnt See you. Sorry. Good to See you and we will catch up later. Thank you. Lets stay with the olympics. Earlier, my colleague Victoria Fritz spoke to Charlotte Dujradin who is britains most decorated female olympian, after winning two Dressage Bronze medals at tokyo, and the oldest member of Team Gb, Carl Hester and asked them whether the excitement had sunk in yet. Yes, it has, were home. You know, Coming Home makes it all worthwhile, you know, Seeing everybody and im sure everybody will feel the same who has been a competitor there. We have missed family, we have missed friends, you miss your audience and the people that love what you do, so to come home, you know, we have been home, we came back on friday and the horses came yesterday so we have been able to enjoy it over the weekend and run around with these around her neck. Ok, and tell me about the celebrations this weekend. They must have been wild. Well, i dont think mine were, yours might have been. Charlottes mum has been unwell so she went home to visit her family. It was lovely to go home and See all my friends and family and catch up and celebrate, you know, i have had photos with my brothers and my sister, we went to hospital to See my mum, had pictures with my mum in the hospital and the members of staff came in, the doctors to have pictures with my medals, so it is a very proud moment and you know, Seeing my family, thats the greatest thing when you come home, its what you always look forward to the most. They must be incredibly proud of you, but i wonder, charlotte, how proud of you you are of your awesome horse . It was a pretty much a last minute replacement, wasnt it . Yes, absolutely, god, i am incredibly proud of him, what he delivered at there was, you know, to me, i didnt even expected to be honest. I know he has always been a fantastic horse and he is only ten years old, he is very inexperienced, you know, the last 18 months with the pandemic were very difficult to get these horses out to compete, so we have done very little competition, so going to the games, it was a little bit of the unknown as to what to expect and, you know, he gave me everything and more in every test he did. I mean, these medals might might look bronze, but for me what he did was like gold. I was incredibly proud and very emotional, actually, On The Last Day when i got the individual. I remember, i remember looking at the pictures. He might have been inexperienced, all those ten years, a ten year old does Seem like an old horse, but he might have been experienced, but the two of you are incredibly experienced. You have been here before in various guises, can you tell me what it was like at these olympics . It must have been, wasnt it a weird atmosphere in which to perform . It was different and weird and because a new kind you kind of have to self motivate in that situation. We are very lucky that we were together, we have been doing this together for 1a or 15 years and we train together every week, so we are able to keep ourselves motivated like that, because we have each other. That was really good. The atmosphere, although it might be nice for us to have loads of atmosphere, sometimes with younger, less experienced horses, they prefer that slightly quieter atmosphere because it can affect them, it can get tense, they can make mistakes in performances. So for them, actually, it was a really gentle introduction into olympic level. You know, theres a lot of stress involved with travelling the horses, flying the horses there, the Heat And Humidity was something that they have never experienced. Their stables are very well air conditioned and coming out of the stables into a competition atmosphere, it really hit a wall, and it was very different for them and they still performed brilliantly. Im amazed at how well they coped, but i think that perhaps for them, this really worked this year not having so much atmosphere at the games. And what did it mean for you in terms of the atmosphere for Team Gb . Were you able to See other athletes, were you able to share new experiences . Or were you very much isolated and within your own bubble, your own zone . Yes, we were kept in our bubble. We were lucky, we went to the holding hotel first of all were all athletes would come through, so its still exciting, you still See great names from all sports, Andy Murray was an our flight on the way back, so charlotte dived in and got a picture with him and Tom Daley and anyone else you could get our hands on, but generally we were meeting coming in and out through doors. So, yes, that was a shame because of course, in a normal olympics, we can go and watch other events. You do a lot of pin swapping, you do a lot of meeting other and sharing stories, so that was different. We were unable to do that. But ourjob, at The End of the day was trying to try and become her medal and that was the third olympics. That was really our focus and it was great to have the Support Staff around and actually look after us in our physios, vets and everybody else that made It Fun for us, because it could have been very lonely olympics, but they made a great fun in the evenings and we could actually, we couldnt all sit round a table, but we can all be in the room and catch up. I think they did an amazingjob, the room and catch up. I think they did an amazing job, considering the difficulties that were involved this year. People who have been fully vaccinated in the us or European Union no longer have to isolate when arriving in the uk from an Amber List country. Lets Take A Look at the new rules that came into force at four oclock this morning. Travellers will still need to take either a lateral Flow Or Pcr test pre departure and a Pcr Test on the second day after they arrive. Under 18s will be exempt from isolation, and some will not have to test, depending on their age. Tougher rules also remain in place for france, with travellers still required to quarantine even if they have been double jabbed. With me now is Chris Goater from the international Air Travel Association industry group, based in geneva. Good to have you with us. Thank you forjoining us. In our view they are overdue. The science for some time has shown we are able to open travel safely and restart this huge industry for the uk and what this means for our members more importantly, for the millions of people who rely on Air Transport for theirjob and people either indirectly or directly, is that there is no hope at The End of the tunnel and at the industry can restart. ~. ,. , ~ tunnel and at the industry can restart. ~. ,. , ~. , restart. I think the Traffic Light system is not particularly difficult to understand, what the problem is is the introducing Amber Plus a Watch List things is that they Seem to want to add further complication to want to add further complication to the system. I think most countries around the world have some sort of system for grading the risk from different countries and we dont have a problem with that, but of course, consumers and the industry need certainly certainty to plan. We have Seen throughout the year the huge difference that occurs is that there is a drop in demand. A cancellation of the border. This is very difficult for the industry to cope with and of course for consumers. That is what we need, certainty going forward. The government. Certainty going forward. The government, i certainty going forward. The government, i am certainty going forward. The government, i am sure, certainty going forward. The government, iam sure, is certainty going forward. The government, i am sure, is saying thatis government, i am sure, is saying that is not trying to be over complicated but trying to make an informed decision for people as To Travel. I informed decision for people as To Travel. ~. ,. ,. ,. ,. , travel. I think a lot of people are confused with travel. I think a lot of people are confused with what travel. I think a lot of people are confused with what happened i travel. I think a lot of people are confused with what happened in | confused with what happened in france, there doesnt Seem to be a huge amount of data to justify that particular situation in our opinion. It Seems to us that if you are double jabbed, you should be able To Travel without restriction. And lets not forget that these people are also being tested and the prevalence of people who are coming through that system with a positive testis through that system with a positive test is so low, particularly compared to the rate of Infection Thatis compared to the rate of infection that is already existing in the uk, but really the risk is extremely low and manageable. So we would argue that the industry should be continuing to open up, we dont need any more of these in between Traffic Lights, and that we need to be able to restart this industry on a sure footing so that loss of these jobs can be saved going forward. How footing so that loss of these obs can be saved going forward. How Big A ob can be saved going forward. How Big A 0b to can be saved going forward. We have done a lot of research as had independent fly . We have done a lot of research as had independent Organisations L as had independent organisations about the risk of flying itself. We do ask that people continue to wear masks, that does Seem to make a difference on board, but the way that the Cabin Air is organised with the airflow and the fact that people are not seated facing each other, this means that the risk of getting an Infection And Board is very low, so actually, we are fairly confident that we can reassure people and certainly, the evidence Seems to be the people want to fly, they want to get on a Plane And Travel somewhere when the opportunity exists and we have Seen some of the Pictures Today at Heathrow People arriving and being able to made love ones that they have been denied the chance to meet for months and months and that is what we want to See. In scotland the government says children aged 12 and over with certain Health Conditions will receive their first vaccine before the sixteenth of august. Shots will be offered to about 4,000 young people with Learning Disabilities and downs syndrome. Katie hunter has been speaking to one teenager and her mum. Happy happy, emotional. Quite emotional this morning. Its the news 14 year old katie and her family have been longing to hear. She had a Wee Momentjust before you came on to speak to you, she was quite. Just quite bubbly. I think itsjust, weve waited this long. Weve really been waiting since november, since the news came out that there was going to be a vaccine. Now that vaccine will be going into younger arms. The Scottish Government says children 12 and over with certain conditions, including downs syndrome, severe neuro disabilities and lower immunity, will be offered the Pfizer Jag before august the 16th. As well as those children, healthy young people of the same age who live with someone who is immunosuppressed will also be given the option of a vaccine. It will give them some protection after the first dose but they will need to wait until they have had their second doses, which will be eight weeks after that first dose. So we are really, really looking towards this I Protection being in placei for them into the autumn and through the winter months as well. In some countries, including the us, healthy children 12 and over are being routinely vaccinated. But the uks committee of experts, thejcvi, has advised against this for now. While most people here are currently vaccinated at a clinic or pop up centre, the Scottish Government says children from the eligible groups will be able to get the jag in a setting that suits them, including their own home. Katie, who has been shielding, hopes that vaccine will mean greater freedom. Where do you want to go . Home bargains. Home bargains for a hinch haul. Shes desperate to get there. Yes she is and school. I said the 5 Word School and shopping are now within sight for katie and many other older children most at risk from covid. Katie hunter, Bbc News. Today marks three months until the 26th un climate Change Conference in glasgow known as cop 26. It is anticipated to be the most important meeting on Climate Change since the Paris Agreement in 2015. The World Wildlife Fund is partnering with leading international artists such as tracey emin, Anish Kapoor and Gavin Turk to inspire global action. Tom webb reports. From mary mattingly s vanishing point on Southend Pier to ackroyd harveys beuys acorns here at the tate modern, artists are creating eye catching pieces to draw attention to our changing climate. For me, the role of artists is both to demonstrate how we got to this emergency but also to help empower people with images and Hope And Belief that can help all of us feel empowered to take action. Ahead of the climate summit in glasgow, artists, galleries and museums are coming together to highlight issues around Climate Change. Art for your world is a project where were working with a leading range of artists to really help tell the story and involve a much wider community in the fight against Climate Change. We are hoping the work of artists will inspire Hearts And Minds and audiences around the world to do something to help save their world. One british artist, Gavin Turk, is creating work for this campaign. I have actually gathered the Sump Oil from the bottom of a white transit van. Then i painted the canvas with the Sump Oil. The painting will actually never dry, it will always be wet. Slowly, the oil is descending down the canvas, which is almost like saying, come on, weve got to get ourselves engaged in this conversation about the planet. I think its brilliant to be able to associate Selling Art with actual physical projects that hopefully will make a change into the future. One project being funded by the sale of the artwork at auction is the uks first Seagrass Restoration Project in pembrokeshires coastal national park. One million seagrass Seeds were collected by a team of volunteers in england and wales before being placed into hessian bags and planted on the sea bed, following the disappearance of up to 92 of the uks seagrass in the last century. Seagrass accounts for 10 of annual ocean carbon storage, capturing carbon from the environment 35 times faster than tropical rainforests. We have been back recently to some nearby very small plots we planted about four years ago now and they have taken a while to develop. Now theyre expanding quite rapidly. The fact were Seeing mature plants is a very good sign. It transforms those shallow seas to having a hugely complex habitat. All sorts of exciting, interesting animals live in that environment. With their unique ability to inspire and communicate through creativity, campaigners hope more artists will come together to paint a brighter future for our planet. Tom webb, Bbc News. Now its time for a look at the weather. Although temperatures are at or below average for the time of year, sunshine feels warm. The other face is Torrential Downpours which are already reporting the met office on the Isle Of Wight which has had 100 millimetres of Rain Today from a particularly heavy downpour that has moved through, so there is a chance of flooding. That risk of the heaviest downpours is in the South East of wales and South Midlands and Southern England and including london, not every body catching them, but if you do, they could be impact from them. Elsewhere inning and in wales, chance of a shower, Northern Ireland a lot of cloud with the western Parts Clearing and sunny spells in Western Scotland with isolated showers and a few spots of rain. Where we have those Torrential Downpours developing in parts of england and wales, they will slowly fade this evening, and the second half of the night is looking largely dark dry with temperatures in a little lower than this. Some of us into single figures as tomorrow begins. It will feel fresh but with sunshine and a ridge of High Pressure across us and there is a Weather System trying to approach from the west which may produce rain in the Western Scotland is a day begins and outbreaks of rain in the isles of Scilly And Cornwall. Most places with a dry start and it will wait until that showers get going and we will catch them in scotland tomorrow. In Northern Ireland, a brighter day with showers around. But england and wales will stay dry and you may catch a heavy and even torrential slow moving downpour into the afternoon and it would bring with it afternoon and it would bring with it a risk of flooding. And by wednesday, that wednesday Weather System in the west and a few outbreaks of rain and if by afternoon heavy downpours, particularly across northern england, Northern Ireland and scotland, though anywhere, you could catch a shower. Temperatures will be the low 20s. Thursday and friday into the weekend and it is all about low pressure. It picks up the wins across southern area so not as windy as last week, but around this area of low pressure moving and there will be bands of rain and showers. A selection of places on the outlook and i think most places will be very similar if youre looking for Forecast Online or through the Hour And Bear in mind it be wet four times and it could be heavy but there will be sunny spells also. Belarus is Seen as one of the most repressive countries in europe, the government cracking down on any dissent. Krystsina tsimanouskaya has little choice but to settle in another country. Richard galpin, Bbc News. Ministers are being urged to abandon the idea of a Covid Amber Watchlist of Holiday Destinations which might be moved on to the red Travel List at short notice. Opponents say the move would prevent people travelling to destinations like spain because they wouldnt want to risk having to quarantine in a hotel when they return to the uk. From today, fully vaccinated people arriving from the us and most of the eu will no longer have to isolate. Our Business Correspondent Katy austin reports. Limits on international travel affect more than holidays. Gemma is looking forward to bringing her baby from Los Angeles to the uk to meet his grandparents. The idea that the quarantine has now gone means that were going to have our whole trip where we can be with our family and friends. Previously, only people who received theirjabs in the uk could avoid self isolating when arriving from Amber List countries. From this morning, fully vaccinated us or Eu Travellers dont have to quarantine and they wont have to take a test on day eight after arriving. They must still take a Predeparture Test and a covid Pcr Test on day two after their arrival. As soon as we got off the aeroplane, we were so excited. Even The Little Ones were shouting, london, london so, it is just absolutely marvellous to be back. Its been a very long time. Weve onlyjust literally walked in a few minutes ago. When we get home and See everybody, it will sink in. We live in chicago at the moment, l so they havent been back to Seel grandparents for about two and a half years. L so it took us about 15 documents |as well as passports to get back. The tougher Quarantine Rule still applies to people coming from france. The us is still not allowing Uk Visitors in, but one airline told me todays changes are a step in the right direction, triggering a notable rise in bookings. Week over week, more than 150 for New York london, specifically. More than 250 increase. But for sure, there is a big difference, pre pandemic, much closer to the pattern where customers are booking. Because of confidence, of course, in booking, changes of travel restrictions. For some other british businesses which depend on tourism, including this Central London hotel, todays move is encouraging. As soon as that announcement was made we have had many bookings, particularly from the us. The Europe Market is slower, but particularly from the us. We wish it could have happened earlier but the fact that it has now happened is a positive for us and the industry as a whole. Tour operators involved with Red List countries, though, are still waiting for any good news. A slight sigh of relief that the government is minded to allow people to move around the world a little bit, theres some solace in that. But we are a long way from the opening of long haul travel. We need recognition from the government that they understand the challenges we continue to face, and when we need support. Uk Airline Bosses welcome todays changes but said ongoing restrictions could threaten the aviation sectors recovery, and called for more countries to be put on the green list. The governments next review of the travel rules is due later this week. Katy austin, Bbc News. And in a few minutes well be speaking to the Conservative Mp for crawley, and head of the Cross Party Group of mps looking at the future of uk aviation. A man, a woman and a 13 year Old Boy have been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a five year Old Boy was pulled from the Ogmore River in South Wales. Our correspondent Hywel Griffith is at the scene in sarn and has sent this update. The five year Old Boy has been named locally as logan, and all through the morning, people have been bringing cards, teddy bears, flowers to lay aside the scene where he was found. Police were first called at 5 a5am on saturday morning, initially the report of a missing child. Very quickly when they came here, they found his body in the Ogmore River, just behind those trees. He was taken to hospital but sadly nothing could be done to save him. This story took an even more tragic Turn Yesterday when it was announced that three people had been arrested on suspicion of murder, a 39 year old, a 30 year old and a 13 year Old Boy. They havent been named but i understand the police have at least another five or six hours to question them and they may be able to extend that time of questioning. People weve spoken to here this morning in sarn are clearly shocked by these developments. They talk of logan is a happy, smiling, confident little boy. They were familiar with Seeing him walking around the streets here and No One can really understand how this event would have happened. We have Seen Police Divers in the river, just 100 metres away from me, such a property nearby to the river, as well. Searching a property because of this is an active investigation, we have Seen scenes of Crime Frenzy of those going through the house and divers in the river, trying to work out exactly how this young life was ended. It comes as new South Wales announced more than 200 new cases and a Fifteenth Death in the current outbreak. Hundreds of unarmed soldiers have started patrols this week, with critics saying it will leave vulnerable people feeling targeted and angry. Heres our sydney correspondent shaimaa khalil. Getting ready to join the police on sydneys streets. As the city grapples with the ongoing Delta Variant outbreak, 300 unarmed troops will be deployed starting this week, helping with everything from Care Packages to Street Patrols and house to house checks. Critics have called this heavy handed and a worrying use of the army in a liberal democracy. Tension is particularly high in sydneys poorer and ethnic diverse West And South west, where eight areas have been deemed the epicentre of the outbreak. A large number of people here are essential workers, employed in the construction, Manufacturing And Health sectors. The lockdown means many Families Cant earn a living and those who can go to work have to get tested every three days. Some are refugees who fled war torn countries. Rights groups say that coming into contact with the police or the army can be traumatic for them. Areas in western and South Western Sydney have already been put under stricter rules than the rest of the city and with soldiers now on the ground, many say their communities are being targeted. One resident told me it felt like an Invisible Wall was being built around them. I think its going to be very challenging. I mean, its hard Seeing police on every corner of the local area where i live, so i think the army is just going to add that extra level of anxiety for people. Its been polarising to See how the rules are being enforced in certain parts of sydney and other parts, maybe not so much. The law has to apply to everybody. Experts say that with the high transmissibility of the Delta Variant, it only takes a few people flouting the rules for the numbers to increase. Its now at a sufficient prevalence in the community where it will find those corridors and make its way through. It is always a challenge if you try and have one area that you lock down and others that you dont. At the moment, it Seems to be holding to the areas that theyre focused on, but if they find cases starting to emerge outside that, then i suspect theres no more creeping of those boundaries, i think it has to be greater sydney. Another challenge is the low vaccination rates. The government has urged more people to get theirjabs, saying the country needs to reach 70 before restrictions could be eased. As recently as two months ago, most people enjoyed near total Freedom Of Movement here, but in the last few weeks, the Delta Variant has pushed many parts of australia back into lockdown mode. Shaimaa khalil, Bbc News, sydney. Temperatures are forecast to exceed A0 Celcius this week in southern turkey, which is battling a series of wildfires. Eight people have died in the worst blazes the country has Seen in a decade. The authorities say most fires are now under control, but as simonjones reports, the huge Firefighting Operation is continuing. The fires continue to rage, fanned by strong winds, fuelled by soaring temperatures. More than 100 blazes have broken out. Volunteers have been working Night And Day to try to do what they can, providing Food And Drink for exhausted firefighters and helping them with local knowledge. Translation while there are these fires and this disaster, many residents, including myself, cannot put our heads on the pillow and fall asleep peacefully. We must be responsible for our land to prevent our future from burning. But the situation is really bad now. That is evident from these pictures showing the scorched earth. The Holiday Resort of marmaris now resembles a ghost town. It is being evacuated. The safest way out is by boat. Something is different, because i have never Seen this before. We had little fires before but i have never Seen this devastation. It is notjust here, it is everywhere. The police are trying to establish whether some of the fires were started deliberately. The turkish government is facing criticism for the shortage of Firefighting Aircraft in the country, it insists it will do everything to help those affected by the flames rebuild their lives. It says the majority of the fires have been contained. Many people are wondering what will be left of their homes and belongings when they are finally allowed to return. Parts of italy, Spain And Greece have also been suffering, and as temperatures rise, so do the concerns. In 2012 a british surgeon travelled out to syria to provide medical care to civilians in aleppo. But Dr Abbas Khan was captured by the regime there and was killed in custody a year later. Now, eight years after Dr Khans death, his legacy is inspiring a new generation of doctors as Charlie Haynes reports. Born in aleppo, syria, Karim Aljian moved to the uk as a child. He watched the Syrian War from afar, tracking it on Social Media. One man in particular stood out to him, Dr Abbas Khan, a british surgeon. But he was detained by the syrian government and killed in prison. Struck by the difference that abbas had made, karim followed abbas into medicine. I thought to myself constantly, actually, during Medical School that the reason i am doing this is because i was inspired by him. So, i printed a photograph and put it in a frame, and i wanted to pay homage to him, in the hope that maybe his mother would See that, you know, a fitting tribute. A photo of his graduation posted on twitter caught the attention of Social Media users. Sara, abbas s sister, saw the post and reached out to him. Lovely to meet you. Karim met with sarah, and abbas brother, shah also an orthopaedic surgeon. It is inspiring that you have dedicated your medical career and said thanks to abbas. I cannot explain to you how touched my family and i are. It was so beautiful to read. Abbas was a passionate doctor, a very caring individual. And i guess today, if he was here, i he would be filled with pride to See that he would have inspired one person to go to Medical School and be involved in the work that he was doing. Health care professionals do. Incredible things in extremely difficult circumstances, whether it is here, on Covid Wards or abroad in war zones. And there needs to be much greater. Protection that they are offered. L i think karim has mentioned that he hopes to go into the same field of carrying out humanitarian aid work, and i think the concern comes to our familys mind that we do not want another family to go through what we did. I think the pandemic has showed us the sacrifices that they give. Before leaving, abbas s family gave karim a final, touching gift. A surgical textbook once belonging to abbas, now with a new generation of doctor. Charlie haynes, Bbc News. Israels Supreme Court is due to make a decision on whether to evict palestinian residents in a neighbourhood of occupied east jerusalem. The case in Sheikh Jarrah added to escalating tensions in the region earlier this year. Our middle East Correspondent Tom Bateman is inside the Court Building and sent us this update. We are outside the court has and you can See behind me several members of the fourfamily is can See behind me several members of the four family is waiting for that court hearing. What theyre doing is applying to appeal against the Eviction Order. It was late last year, into this year, that the israeli court upheld the eviction of these families after a case brought by a Jewish Settler group, and what that group wants to do, or what it has been trying to do over many decades, in fact, has been trying to do over many decades, infact, is has been trying to do over many decades, in fact, is to evict palestinian residents from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah in east jerusalem, take over their homes in order to build and israeli settlement. That case has been ongoing for many years. The Settlement Group claims historic land rights, saying it was owned by jewish religious trust in the 19th Century and they have acquired those land rights, but for those families here who have been in those homes for generations, they were refugees from the war that surrounded Israels Creation in 19118, the older generations have been in those homes since the Mid 19 50s and this lengthy and ongoing legal case has been trying to establish, as far as theyre concerned, their right to stay there. Their legal representatives that ive been chatting to says hes hopeful about their case, but as for the families, ive spoken to one man who is part of one of the families due to be evicted, and he spoke really come of his belief that there was an inevitability that he thinks the Eviction Order will be upheld. What happens here today is the legal element of that. If the courts refuse the appeal, that legally speaking, the evictions can go ahead, but of course this case has become hugely political. It was one of the factors that led to that explosion of Tensions Injerusalem in may and ultimately led to a war between Israel Hamas in gaza, and its led to huge international pressure that these eviction should be staid or frozen, pressure that these eviction should be staid orfrozen, so i think we will be looking at what happens politically after these decisions here today. As for israels government, it has always said it believes this is simply a private Housing Dispute to be decided in its quotes. Hello. Russia is banned from the Tokyo Olympics because of past doping violations. But more than 300 athletes are competing under the banner of the Russian Olympic Committee and theyre winning a string of medals. Thats upset rival athletes whove openly speculated that the russians are still cheating. But in russia itself, many feel their athletes have been punished, unable to use their national flag or anthem. Sarah rainsford reports from moscow. These are russias next generation of olympic hopefuls. Their minds are focussed on perfecting complex moves, not criticism that their Country Isnt being punished enough for doping. The girls told me Theyjumped Forjoy when russian gymnasts took gold in tokyo, inspired even though the team has to compete without the national anthem and flag. Translation you can take away our flag and anthem, l but you can never take our love for russia. Translation you can take away our flag and anthem, l russian athletes are hardly anonymous. Their entire kit is in the form of the flag. More than 330 athletes are competing for the Russian Olympic Committee. That is even though russia was caught cheating on a giant scale after the 2014 games. Russia has been punished. Former olympians do not think russia has got off lightly because its reputation is now in tatters. We are cleaning, cleaning, Cleaning Sport and the people around, the other countries, they say we are not clean it is not fair. We are cleaning the sport seven years, still we get these questions. The russian government is hitting back at its critics, in its own way. This is none other than the foreign Ministry Spokeswoman her message to the world turns the roc Teams Acronym into a defiant hashtag. We will roc you. From russia, she adds, with love. Moscows latest Street Art is the russian bear wrestling the world anti doping body, wada, to the ground. This mural really captures the mood there is no soul searching or public remorse over the doping violations, instead there is defiance, contempt even for the punishment. Russian officials have acknowledged there was a problem with doping in sport but they have never accepted that it was widespread and officially sanctioned. There is a mentality of us against the world, russian athletes were framed i by the international community, that they are not really complicit, that everyone is doping, they were always after us and now we are unfairly punished. The gymnasts success has brought new recruits to The Club, taking their first steps towards possible medals of their own. Russia thinks it is time to move on from the scandal over sochi, but it is a long way from convincing the world that it can be trusted. Chinese Health Authorities say they have detected seven new covid cases in wuhan where the pandemic began. According to state media, this is the first time the virus has reappeared in the City Sincejune 2020. Our China Correspondent Stephen Mcdonell explained how the chinese authorities are responding. It doesnt sound like many cases, does it . I mean, people listening to this will be thinking, so what . But in china, for many, many months, in virtually every part of this country, everyone had been going about their lives without the coronavirus, without any cases at all, thinking that it was all under control, if you like it. But now there has been a fresh outbreak next to the Delta Variant. And like i say, if you look at the numbers, theyre not that big in any particular area but whats worrying the authorities is the spread of the cases. So theyre right across the country, and as a result, we are Seeing the implementation of very strict measures. I mean, in some places, like in zhuzhou, more than A Million people are under a three day lockdown. All flights to that city have been cancelled. All trains coming into beijing from the newly declared hot zones have also been stopped. I mean, right across the country, the authorities are using these Track And Trace apps to try to find out where people have been. It Seems to have started in nanjing at the airport, then possibly gone to this very popular Tourist Area called zhangjiajie, where there was a performance. Then infected people have taken it on to other parts of the country, and itjust shows how fast the Delta Variant can spread. Now, china, as people will know if theyve been following the coverage, adopts a policy of elimination, so it wont tolerate any outbreak if it can possibly help it. And so as a result there will be strict measures put in place to try and stop it, restrictions on peoples movements, mass testing, a requirement to show your Health Code to go into certain places. And in beijing, for example, there are not that many cases, less than a dozen, however, we have compounds right around the city, housing compounds, where there may be one or two cases, shut down, you cant leave there. And the authorities have recommended people to not undergo any travel if they can possibly avoid it, right across the country, at the moment. So we are really, really looking towards this Protection Being in place for them into the autumn and through the winter months as well. Katie, who has been shielding, hopes that vaccine will mean greaterfreedom. Where do you want to go . Home bargains. Home bargains for a hinch haul. Shes desperate to get there. To cornwall now where work is under way on a new Emergency Housing Scheme in the grounds of the Councils Headquarters in truro. The local authority says it cant rely on hotels and B Bs to house vulnerable people, so its installing 18 more self contained single cabins following schemes for Street Sleepers in truro and penzance. Other sites are planned, as well as more than 100 park homes for families. Tamsin melville reports. While the visitors pour into cornwall, it doesntjust mean Traffic Jams and crowds. It means hardly anywhere for the vulnerable in urgent need of somewhere to stay. The Property Owners and Hotel Owners and B B owners have been looking to capitalise on the amount of people who are coming down here on holiday and evicting our tenants at very short notice and we need to do something. And that something is offering more of this scheme, set up at the height of the pandemic in truro and penzance. Work is under way to clear an area at County Hall for more self contained cabins, complete with a cooker, shower, even a fridge. So this is a way of giving People Security of tenure, so they know they can stay there as long as it is necessary until they find more suitable accommodation for them. Theres going to be 18 of these cabins here and there are several other new sites coming soon, too. The council says it is also planning to buy and do up more than 100 homes that will be suitable for families. Around 1000 people in single person households and families are in temporary or Emergency Accommodation in cornwall. It currently costs the council around £6 million per year to house those in need. Its predicted this could rise to £10 million this year. Its not cheap getting the cabins in place and running them, either, with a lot of Preparation Work needed. But offering more is welcomed by someone like craig, who we first met in a cabin in truro last summer. He got the support to move into a flat and is now getting work from an Employment Agency and planning for the future. It felt like i had a roof over my head, other than having a piece of canvas over my head. Or a temporary roof over my head. It felt like i had more of a permanent place to live. Cornwall council will use its existing budget that would have gone and things like B B for the cabins, but stresses it is a temporary solution, but finding ways to provide permanent Social Housing is a priority. Some more Olympic Newsjust in. In the past few minutes Team Gb have won their first ever womens weightlifting olympic medal. Emily campbell from nottingham won the Plus 87 kilograms event. More on that after 2pm. Lets catch up with the weather. Hello. Two faces to our weather at the start of this week, one of them delivering some pleasant sunny spells. And though temperatures are at or below average for the time of year, in The Sunshine it still feels quite warm. The other face, though, Torrential Downpours. Already reports from the met office that one spot on the Isle Of Wight has had over 100 millimetres of Rain Today from a particularly heavy downpour thats moved through, so there is a chance of flooding from these. That risk of the heaviest downpours as the day goes on from South East wales, the South Midlands, across much of Southern England, including london. Not everybody catching them but if you do, there could be some impacts from them. Elsewhere in england and wales, sunny spells, chance of a shower. Northern ireland, a lot of cloud, rain towards the West And South clearing, and sunny spells in scotland, isolated shower, maybe be a few spots of rain where its cloudy in the Northern Isles. Now, where we have this Torrential Downpours developing in parts of england and wales, theyll slowly fade into this evening. The second half of the night is looking largely dry and temperatures will be a little lower than this, away from the Town And City centres, so some of us into single figures as tomorrow begins. So feeling quite fresh, but with some sunshine, with a ridge of High Pressure across us. There is a Weather System trying to approach from the west, it may produce a few spots of rain towards the North West of scotland as the day begins, with some outbreaks of rain towards the isles of Scilly And Cornwall. Most places, though, a fine start, then we wait for the showers to get going again. A greater chance of catching one in scotland tomorrow, compared with today. In Northern Ireland, a brighter day but a few showers around. For england and wales, while many will stay dry, you may catch heavy, even torrential slow moving downpour into the afternoon that brings with it a risk of flooding. And then, by wednesday, that Weather System to the west starting to make more progress. More cloud in western areas, maybe be a few outbreak of rain, and then for the afternoon, some heavy downpours, particularly across northern england, Northern Ireland and scotland. Though anywhere you could catch a shower. Temperatures high teens into the low 20s. Thursday, friday, into the weekend, its all about an area of low pressure. Picks the winds up again, particularly across southern areas, though not as windy as it was last week with storm ava. But around this area of low pressure moving in, there will be bands of rain or showers. So a selection of places on the outlook, i think most places will look very similar if you look at your Forecast Online or through the app. Bear in mind, it will be wet at times and some of the rain could well be quite heavy, but some sunny spells committee. Max and as well. This is Bbc News. The headlines yes 49 years, Great Britain have waited for their Eventing Gold medal. Team Gb Strike gold again at the Tokyo Olympics. Britains riders make history, clinching a Gold Medal in the Team Eventing and silver in the individual.
