American gymnast Simone Biles will compete in an olympic final tomorrow after missing several others to focus on her mental health. The belarusian sprinter whos taken refuge in a Tokyo Embassy after claiming her country tried to force her onto a plane back home. Well be live In Tokyo for the latest. Also in the programme. The first passengers arrive at heathrow after the change in rules which means people coming in from the us and eu no longer have to quarantine. They havent been back to see grandparents for about two and a half years. So it took us about 15 documents as well as passports to get back. As soon as we got off the aeroplane we got so excited. Child shouts yeah you know, even The Little Ones were shouting, london, london and the british doctor killed in syria who inspired this young medical student to follow in his footsteps. I thought to myself constantly, actually, during Medical School that, you know, the reason im doing this was because i was inspired by him. And coming up on the Bbc News Channel Team Gb s men and womens teams have both qualified for track cyclings team pursuit. The women now take on the usa in the first round the men face denmark. Good Afternoon And Welcome to bbc news. In the last hour, Team Gb have clinched another Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympics their first gold in the Team Eventing for almost half a century. Meanwhile, one of americas greatest olympians the gymnast Simone Biles has decided she will compete in tomorrows beam final. Thats after she pulled out of several previous finals In Tokyo to focus on her mental health. And the belarusian sprinter Krystina Tsimanouskaya has taken refuge at the Polish Embassy In Tokyo after claiming she was forcibly taken to the Airport Yesterday for criticising her countrys coaches. Lets go straight to our Sports Correspondent Natalie pirks In Tokyo. Yes, iam yes, i am here of the Equestrian Centre where, the last hour, as you said, britain have won their first Team Eventing Gold Medal since munich in 1972. They did it in some style. This brilliant team of Tom Mcewen, Laura Collett and the one Event Ryder Oliver townend effectively had a four Fence Lead going into this come a bit of a cushion. They didnt need it. They had taken a commanding lead after the cross country. Not much break. You can see the riders walking the course behind me. They will go again for the individualjumping. There for the individual jumping. There could for the individualjumping. There could be some more medals there. Townend is in the silver medal position. Laura collett is in fifth. The Gold Medal is extra special for her, in 2013 she suffered a horrific fall in cross country, her horse fell on top of her. She had to be resuscitated five times in the ambulance, she had an Emergency Tracheotomy and was in an induced coma for a0 days. She literally and metaphorically got back in the saddle and is now olympic champion. Here is Andy Swiss with how the team did it and a Round Up of the rest of the story so far today. Hoping to ride into the record books. Nearly half a century after they last won gold in the Team Event in, britain began the final day in first place. So, could theyjump to glory . Yes Tom Mcewen, toledo de kerser. Not a foot wrong. Well, Tom Mcewen got them off to the perfect start, with a clear round. And after Laura Collett, it was down to final rider oliver townend. He set out with a healthy advantage. He held his nerve, and finally britain had done it. Yes a9 years, Great Britain have waited for their eventing Gold Medal. A brilliant display from three riders, all making their olympic debuts. Team gb s long wait for gold in this event has certainly been worth it. It was a frustrating day for britains sailors, though, because they couldnt actually sail. Their Medal Hopes had to be put on hold, as a lack of wind meant racing was postponed. Elsewhere, though, there was no shortage of action. Laura kenny, beginning her quest for another gold, alongside katie archibald, Elinor Barker and josie knight. With the help of a radical new Bike Design they came second in qualifying for the womens pursuit. Room for improvement, but a solid first ride. A lot more solid than one australian cyclist s bike. Alex porters handlebars disintegrating mid race. A few scratches, but thankfully no major harm done. Meanwhile, one of britains biggest hopes on the track got her olympics under way. Laura muir, going in the 1500 metres. And it was the smoothest of starts. Second in her heat, to ease through to the semifinals. So excited to get started. All my flatmates have raised already. So i was itching to get going. So, yeah, just really nice to get that first round out of the way and feel comfortable. There was drama, though, and another heat. The world champion, sifan hassan, ready to make her move on the final lap, when she tripped over another athlete. No way back, surely . But instead, she picked herself up, chased down her rivals, sprinted past them and ultimately won her heat. It suggests she may take some beating. And in the final of the womens hurdles, a little bit of olympic history. And Jasmine Camachoquinn is powering away, surely, to the Gold Medal now . Jasmine camachoquinn, winning a first ever Athletics Gold for puerto rico. For such a small country, she later said, to give little kids hope, im just glad im the person to do it. Andy swiss, bbc news. Now lets talk about Simone Biles, the Superstar American gymnast who has pulled out of a succession of olympic finals there. But she is going to compete in one tomorrow . Indeed. She is going to compete in the beam final. And that is great news for fans of gymnastics, because she obviously missed out from competing, trying to retain that olympic Floor Title tonight. Yesterday, the vault came and went, because she has been suffering from what gymnasts call the twisties, she described does not knowing from down. She has had it before but it started again when she got to tokyo. She said it was honestly petrifying trying to do a skill but not having your Mind And Body and sink. It seems she must feel better, so thats great news. She won a bronze in rio on the beam afterfalling. She is the reigning champion. She was expected to come and take away five Gold Medals. This is the last chance she has to go back with a gold. Chance she has to go back with a old. ,. , chance she has to go back with a Iold . , ~ chance she has to go back with a old. . , ~. , gold. She is the first openly transgender athlete to compete in a different Gender Category from which they were born at the olympics. She originally competed as a male, but quit the sport a decade ago. She then transitioned in 2012 and came back to the sport as a female. She is now a3, the third oldest weightlifter in olympic history. Really complex situation, this, one that has sparked debate from people who believe she is a Role Model and that this is an incredibly important moment for representation in the sport, and from those who believe she gained an unfair Performance Advantage by going through puberty as a male, and therefore should not be competing in the womens category. Important to say she has met all of the requirements set by the international Weightlifting Federation and the ioc, to take Hormone Suppressing drugs to reduce the testosterone to the correct levels. At the ioc has also said after these olympics it will review its policy to work on a new rights respecting approach to address the complexity of this issue. Mil complexity of this issue. All nicel , complexity of this issue. All nicely, thank you much. Natalie pirks In Tokyo. The government is being urged to abandon the idea of a Covid Amber Watchlist of countries where british tourists might find themselves being moved on to the red Travel List at short notice. Opponents say the move would in effect stop people travelling to destinations like spain because they wouldnt want to risk having to quarantine in a hotel once they return to the uk. Meanwhile, from today, fully vaccinated people arriving from the us and most of the eu will no longer have to isolate. Our Business Correspondent Katy austin reports. Limits on international travel affect more than holidays. Gemma is looking forward to bringing her baby from Los Angeles to the uk to meet his grandparents. The idea that the quarantine has now gone means that were going to have our whole trip where we can be with our family and friends. Previously, only people who received theirjabs in the uk could avoid self isolating when arriving from Amber List countries. From this morning, fully vaccinated us or Eu Travellers dont have to quarantine and they wont have to take a test on day eight after arriving. They must still take a Predeparture Test and a Covid Pcr Test on day two after their arrival. As soon as we got off the aeroplane, we were so excited. Even The Little Ones were shouting, london, london so, it is just absolutely marvellous to be back. Its been a very long time. Weve onlyjust literally walked in a few minutes ago. When we get home and see everybody, it will sink in. We live in chicago at the moment, l so they havent been back to seal grandparents for about two and a half years. L so it took us about 15 documents |as well as passports to get back. The tougher Quarantine Rule still applies to people coming from france. The us is still not allowing Uk Visitors in, but one the airlines told me todays changes are a step in the right direction, triggering a notable rise in bookings. Week over week, more than 150 for New York london, specifically. More than 250 increase. For sure, there is a big difference, pre pandemic, much closer to the pattern where customers are booking. Because of confidence, of course, in booking, changes of travel restrictions. For some other british businesses which depend on tourism, including this Central London hotel, todays move is encouraging. As soon as that announcement was made we have had many bookings, particularly from the us. The Europe Market is slower, but particularly from the us. We wish it could have happened earlier but the fact that it has now happened is a positive for us and the industry as a whole. Tour operators involved with Red List countries, though, are still waiting for any good news. A slight sigh of relief that the government is minded to allow people to move around the world a little bit, theres some solace in that. But we are a long way from the opening of long haul travel. We need recognition from the government that they understand the challenges we continue to face, and we need support. Uk Airline Bosses welcome todays changes but said ongoing restrictions could threaten the aviation sectors recovery, and called for more countries to be put on the green list. The governments next review of the Travel Rules is due later this week. Katy austin, bbc news. We can speak to our correspondent Nada Tawfik whos Atjfk Airport in New York. There must be considerable relief for travellers from there heading to the uk . Absolutely. I spoke with passengers this morning, checking in for the morning flight, who got here with Plenty Of time because of all of the new procedures in place. Two women i spoke with said for them this was like a gift. One woman is visiting her parents. Herfamily has been separated throughout this pandemic. For her to get back those extra days with herfamily, she said, was like a gift. Another, alex frank, is visiting her Boyfriends Family in the uk for the first time. She actually paid thousands of extra miles to change her flight a day later, so that she could avoid the quarantine. What was really interesting, hearing from both of them, is that they thought it was unusual that the uk, for so long, hadnt recognised vaccinations in the united states as being able to then avoid quarantine. They thought, for them, the cdc, america was the samejab and they for them, the cdc, america was the same jab and they should be exempt. So they are glad that finally the rules 50 more of what they would expect. However, idid rules 50 more of what they would expect. However, i did question whether they thought this was going to be a small window of opportunity, given the rise of the Delta Variant. Both did say they were concerned what this Fall And Winter would bring, that they are happy to feel some bit of normalcy with travel, despite the fact they are going to have to have several covid tests when they land, and it was such a cumbersome process coming in. It is still the united states, not allowing passengers in from other countries, that will be the final step to make passengers feel like things are getting back to normal. Nada tawfik, thank you very much indeed. Our Transport Correspondent Caroline Davies is here now. You were at heathrow this morning, watching people coming in from the united states on the eu. Plenty of smiles, quite a few tears, the Atmosphere Lie . Plenty of. Smiles, quite a few tears, relief that people had arrived and got into the country. For many people, the fact that quarantine has been removed if you have beenjabbed in the us or europe is a fantastic thing. But there are Plenty Of people that have been Double Jabbed in other countries around the rest of the world that are feeling a bit left out at the moment as well. Is left out at the moment as well. Is still a lot of confusion about the so called Traffic Light Travel system. We are due for an announcement later on this week . Yes, we are getting an announcement about the Traffic Light System. We have green, amber and about the Traffic Light System. We have green, amberand red. But about the Traffic Light System. We have green, amber and red. But there are a few other bands to bear in mind. We already had the green watch list, countries that are currently green but could potentially tip into amber. What we also now have is the amber. What we also now have is the Amber Plus list, which is what france is on at the moment, meaning you still have to quarantine at home, even if you are Double Jabbed. And potentially what some mps are concerned about is the introduction of an amber watch list, which is countries that could go from amber into red. They are saying that this is now instead of having just a Traffic Light System, it is almost a Rainbow Band of political, different things that the government could do and it is getting very complicated. The Government Tracker had already emphasised this is important to help people understand how international travel could change and give people the most information before they decide to book. aine aine davis, thank you very much, our Transport Correspondent. You have some ministers on one hand saying what it would do would be to help people make an informed decision about where to travel because if the country goes from amber to red there is quite a severe impact on the individual traveller in terms of having to do Hotel Quarantine that costs a lot. Labour is saying the government should be publishing the data on which they are making these decisions. Then you have conservative mps, some conservative mps, saying if you have created an amber watchlist, in effect what you are doing is creating a giant Red Flag that will stop people from booking to go to these countries which at the moment these countries which at the moment the government deems are ok to travel to and they worry that if you keep adding in these extra categories, things like the Amber Plus for france and things like an amber watchlist, the whole system becomes too confusing of something that was designed to open up international travel, even in a summer when ministers said it would be different, ends up doing the opposite. As you heard carrie say, when the Traffic Light System was introduced, the idea of it was to minimise the risk of importing new variants into the country so there is a risk down that balance to be struck and it emerged over the weekend that the chancellor had written to the Prime Minister about travel restrictions. It is understood that was in relation to the Lifting We Saw today of quarantine for us and Eu Citizens rather than this. Quarantine for us and Eu Citizens rather than this. A man, a woman and a 13 year Old Boy have been arrested on suspicion of murder, after the body of a five year Old Boy was pulled from the Ogmore River in South Wales. Our correspondent Hywel Griffith is at the scene in sarn. Hywel, over to you. The five year Old Boy has been named locally as logan and all through the morning people have been bringing cards, teddy bears, flowers to lay beside the scene where he was found. The police were first called at 5 a5am on saturday morning, initially a report of a missing child, but very quickly when they came here they found his body in the Ogmore Riverjust behind those trees. He was taken to hospital but sadly nothing could be done to save him. Now, this story took an even more tragic Turn Yesterday when it was announced that three people had been arrested on suspicion of murder. A39 year old, a 30 year old and a 13 year Old Boy as well. They havent been named but i understand the police have released another five or six hours to question them and may be able to extend that time of questioning. People we have spoken to here this morning in sarn are clearly shocked by these developments and talk of logan as a happy, smiling, confident little boy, they were familiar with seeing him walking around the streets here and No One can really understand how this event would have happened. We have seen Police Divers in the river also just about 100 metres away from me, searching a property nearby to the river as well. So this is a very active investigation. We have seen scenes of crime forensic officers going through the house, and as i say, also divers in the river trying to work out exactly how this young life was ended. Life was ended. Hywel, thank you very much life was ended. Hywel, thank you very much indeed. It comes as new South Wales announced 207 new cases and a 15th death from the current outbreak. Hundreds of unarmed soldiers have started patrols this week with critics saying it will leave vulnerable people feeling targeted and angry. Heres our sydney correspondent shaimaa khalil. Getting ready to join the police on sydneys streets. As the city grapples with the ongoing Delta Variant outbreak, 300 unarmed troops will be deployed, starting this week. Helping with everything from care packages, two Street Patrols packages, to Street Patrols and house to house checks. Critics have called this heavy handed, and a worrying use of the army in a liberal democracy. Tension is particularly high in sydneys poorer and ethnically diverse west and South West, where eight areas have been deemed the epicentre of the outbreak. A large number of people here are essential workers, employed in the construction, Manufacturing And Health sectors. The lockdown means many Families Cant earn a living, and those who can go to work have to get tested every three days. Some are refugees who fled war torn countries. Rights groups say that coming into contact with the police or the army can be traumatic for them. Areas in western and South Western sydney have already been put under stricter rules than the rest of the city, and with soldiers now on the ground, many say their communities are being targeted. One resident told me it felt like an Invisible Wall was being built around them. I think its going to be very challenging. I mean, it was hard seeing police on every corner of the local area where i live. I think the army is just going to add that extra level of anxiety for people. Its been polarising to see how the rules are being enforced in certain parts of sydney, and in other parts maybe not so much. The law has to apply to everybody. Experts say that with the high transmissibility of the Delta Variant, it only takes a few people flouting the rules for the numbers to increase. It is now at a sufficient prevalence in the community where it will find those corridors and make its way through. It is always a challenge if you try and have one area that you lockdown and others that you dont. At the moment, it seems to be holding to the areas they are focused on. But if they find cases starting to emerge outside that, i suspect there is no more creeping of those boundaries, i think it has to be greater sydney. Another challenge is the low vaccination rates. The government has urged more people to get theirjabs, saying the country needs to reach 70 before restrictions could be eased. As recently as two months ago, most people enjoyed near total Freedom Of Movement here. But in the last few weeks, the Delta Variant has pushed many parts of australia back into lockdown mode. Shaimaa khalil, bbc news, sydney. Firefighters in turkey are still trying to contain fires that have hit the countrys coastal resort towns. Eight people are known to have died. The scottish Health Secretary Humza yousaf has reported a nursery in dundee to the care inspectorate, alleging possible racial or religious discrimination after his two year old daughter was refused a place. Mr yousaf says that after his family was turned down, his wife asked a White Scottish friend to put in an application and it was accepted within 2a hours. Lets speak to our Scotland Correspondent Alexandra Mckenzie whos in glasgow. Humza yousaf said he is furious about this, so far he has told his story on Social Media and to the newspaper the daily record, he said his daughter, his two year old daughter, was refused a place twice at little Scholars Day Nursery and was told there were no places available but then a White Scottish friend of his wifes also applied and 2a hours later that the child had a place. And then the daily Record Reporter created two different fake profiles and one was refused a place at the nursery and another, also a fake profile, applied for a place at the nursery and was offered a place. And then for a third time Humza Yousaf and his family also applied to the nursery with a muslim name and a White Scottish name and again the same thing happened. The profile with the muslim name was rejected and the other one was accepted. Now, we have just had a statement from a little Scholars Day Nursery in Broughty Ferry and they said our nursery is extremely proud of being open ended inclusive to all and any claim to the contrary is false and an accusation we would refute in the strongest possible terms. Alexandra, Thank Ou strongest possible terms. Alexandra, thank you very strongest possible terms. Alexandra, thank you very much strongest possible terms. Alexandra, thank you very much indeed. In 2012 a british surgeon travelled out to syria to provide medical care to civilians in aleppo. But Dr Abbas Khan was captured by the regime there and was killed in custody a year later. Now, eight years after Dr Khans death, his legacy is inspiring a new generation of doctors as Charlie Haynes reports. Born in aleppo, syria, Karim Aljian moved to the uk as a child. He watched the Syrian War from afar, tracking it on Social Media. One man in particular stood out to him, Dr Abbas Khan, a british surgeon. But he was detained by the syrian government and killed in prison. Struck by the difference that abbas had made, karim followed him into medicine. I thought to myself constantly, actually, during Medical School that the reason i am doing this is because i was inspired by him. So, i printed a photograph and put it in a frame, and i wanted to pay homage to him, in the hope that maybe his mother would see that, you know, kind of a fitting tribute. A photo of his graduation posted on twitter caught the attention of Social Media users. Sara, abbas s sister, saw the post and reached out to him. Lovely to meet you. Lovely to meet you. Karim met with sara, and abbas brother, shah also an orthopaedic surgeon. I think it is inspiring that you have dedicated your medical career and said thanks to abbas. I cannot explain to you how touched my family and i are. It was so beautiful to read. Abbas was a passionate doctor, a very caring individual. And i guess today, if he was here, i he would be filled with pride to see that he would have inspired even one person to go to Medical School and be involved in the work that he was doing. Healthcare professionals do. Incredible things in extremely difficult circumstances, whether it is here, on Covid Wards or abroad in war zones. And there needs to be much greater. Protection that they are offered. L i think karim has mentioned that he hopes to go into the same field of carrying out humanitarian aid work, and i think the concern comes to our familys mind that we do not want another family to go through what we did
