With us to accelerate that. Secondly, we believe that driving should be recognised as a skilled shortage and therefore open up temporary visas for the industry to be able to bring European Drivers back into the country. The government says the industry needs to find the solutions to this, which means better working conditions, better pay. What are you doing . I would absolutely agree with that and arla, through our third party hauliers who do our distribution for us, has significantly increased pay. In fact, this week we have announced a 2,000 signing on bonus for the Drivers Tojoin and work on weekends. And weve introduced an academy to make sure that were growing the home talent, because what we really want in the long term is for british young people to come into the industry as well. How serious is this . Well, i think when youre not able to supply 10 of the stores that would be expecting to get milk every day, i think thats quite worrying for a Customer Walking into a store and not being able to have milk for their teas and coffees, so were taking it very seriously. So a summer of disruption, potentially . Well, thats what were trying to avoid. Emma simpson, speaking to arlas managing director, ash amirahmadi. Time for a look at the weather. Heres helen willetts. 0ur named Storm Storm Ava has brought unseasonably windy weather through the early hours, in excess of 70 miles an hour. The winds have yet to escalate. We have plenty of showers behind. Some fairly soaking rains as you can see. And bands of showers circulating which will turn heavy and thundery particularly across Eastern Parts. That will be a concern. Drierand brighter across Eastern Parts. That will be a concern. Drier and brighter in scotland and Northern Ireland, feeling warmer, but not exempt from showers. The winds have yet to escalate further east. 50 miles an hour, not as ferocious as further west unusual for this time of year. As a result it will feel quite cool. The showers will rumble on into this evening, easing in western areas. But still low Pressure Close by giving showers. A subtle change of Wind Direction freshens things up overnight, not a cold night but feeling fresher. 0ver overnight, not a cold night but feeling fresher. Over the weekend we had this northerly wind. It will pick up extra moisture as it moves. Sunny spells but also a scattering of showers at the weekend. Saturday, there is showers will be more prevalent around Eastern Areas. Across England And Way is, with low pressure still around, heavy showers building up. Fresher across scotland and Northern Ireland but with drier weather promised particularly further west. Temperatures just a little lower. Finally for sunday, a similar day. Possibly their showers more confined to southern parts of england and my but still Patchy Rain across the north. Still that cold northerly wind. Good afternoon. Team gb, Womens Football team, are on the verge, of going out of the tokyo 0lympics, after a Roller Coaster Quarterfinal match, against australia. Despite another two goals from ellen white. Her second looked set to send Team Gb into the Semi Finals, but sam kerr, equalised for australia,in the 89th minute, to force extra time. In the first period of that, caroline wear, saw her penalty saved, and that changed the momentum of the game. And australia had renewed energy. A deflected long Range Shot gave them the lead, and it was kerrs second which effectively shattered Team Gb s Olympic Dream again, as they once again bow out, in the quarter finals. Ellen white has made it 4 3. But time has run out. Earlier today what a story unfolded, on the bmx track. She had to raise £50,000 by Crowd Funding to keep her 0lympic dream on track, while also working as a teaching assistant. But its all been worth it for bethany shreever, who struck gold earlier today. This followed Team Gb s first ever olympic medal in this sport, a silver for kye white, who had battled back from serious injury to get to tokyo. Just two reasons why this has become a fabulous friday for british athletes, and theres more, as adam wild reports. A Silver And Gold in Bmx Racing for Team Gb, a moment of history. In the course of a few frantic moments, Bethany Shriever and Kye Whyte became 0lympic heroes. Few sports at the games are more spectacular than bmx, made all the more so by the british wins. Kye whyte came first, powering his way around to take silver. Gb was still celebrating when beth shriever s a moment arrived in the womens final, she went one better. All the way, all the way, yes that is absolutely phenomenal, good work, beth waiting at the finish as her legs gave way, sharing astonishing scenes ofjoy. Honestly, a Dream Come True to just be here and compete, this is every athletes dream, and i havejust done it, and it is actually crazy. In the pool, gb continued to excel, few more so than Duncan Scott, Gold And Silver already at the games. Here it came down to the finalfew metres, agonisingly behind the chinese swimmer. This is a team where success inspires success. This was luke greenbank s Pep Talk before his 200 metres backstroke final. Whatever was said, it was enough as he powered through for a bronze. A week ago, most pe was carrying the flag for Team Gb at the opening ceremony, yet he was carrying the final british hopes of gold at the rowing regatta, the mens eight, their last chance. In the closing stages, they were still in it, but onlyjust. Bronze is how they enter their games. Ended their games. And that is what Bryony Page takes home too. Her Trampolining Routine was for a few moments at least enough to see her into the lead. In the end, she finished third as the medals keep coming for Team Gb. Weve also seen The Start of the athletics, and all eyes on the Womens 100m heats. Dina Asher Smith began her bid to become the first british women to win a 0lympic individual sprint gold. And she made it safely through with a solid time of 11. 07 seconds, finishing behind american teahna daniels. Looks like she is saving herself for the Semi Finals on saturday. And team Mates Asha Phillip and Daryll Neita also quaified from their heats. You want to come out and get a place in the next round and do a solid run, at the same time without doing too much, because you have another level to go to tomorrow, so im happy to have done that this morning. 0ne Football Line for you away from the olympics, and Marcus Rashford will have surgery on his shoulder next week. The Manchester United and england striker has been troubled by the problem for a number of months. United wanted to check, but have now agreed to the surgery. It is thought rashford will be sidelined for around three months. And hopes of the rugby League World Cup going ahead in the autumn have been dealt a further blow, as the national Rugby League clubs in australia have backed the decision made by the current champions, australia and new zealand, to pull out. The two Southern Hemisphere nations cited Safety Concerns amid the Coronavirus Pandemic for their withdrawal and now the 16 nrl clubs have said they agree with the decision as they dont want to be without their top players for the majority of pre Season Training ahead of 2022. Chief Executivejon Dutton admitted on thursday that the chances of the tournament going ahead as planned were 50 50, but he hopes to win over the players. Switching codes now to union, and Rugby Australia have condemned an outburst by South Africa director of Rugby Rassie erasmus aimed at one of their referees. Erasmus posted the hour long video on Social Media just two days before the springboks play the British And Irish Lions in the second test, criticising the refereeing in last weekends series opener, which the lions won 22 17. Rugby australia said the attack on nic berrys integrity, Character And Reputation is unacceptable. Thats all the sport for now. You can find more on all those stories on the Bbc Sport website. Starts very definitely and it is a fabulous exercise. Thank you for talkin to fabulous exercise. Thank you for talking to us lets go back to Bethany Shriever s stunning performance in the Womens Bmx finals. The 22 year old used Crowd Funding to raise £50,000 to keep her 0lympic dream on track, and it paid off with a gold. This is the moment bethany s parents spoke to her after shed picked up her medal. There it is. Look at that. Earlier, i spoke to bethany s family to get their reaction. I saw something from an early age. We have all ridden a bmx since the children could and beth immediately took to it and was very good and got more and more adventurous and pushed it early on. As her mum, what is going through your head . You must be so proud and anxious. Anxious comes first. Because it is a really dangerous sport and as a mum i worry all the time. Once she gets going and is out the gate as with the races she did in the early hours being out front and looking comfortable, i am just so proud she did it and it is amazing. It is a real testament to your sisters determination, she has had to work part time and crowdfund because the funding initially was not forthcoming from the sport. She has worked really hard over lthe years and we are all reallyl proud of what she has achieved. | it could not have gone to a better| person, we all love her very much and she has worked really hard| to where she has got to todays couldnt be happier. Very emotional this morning. She makes you get up in the middle of the night to watch. How do you think this will inspire other people, other women in particular because in the past it has been a very male dominated sport but when you see women like your sister succeeding hopefully more will come forward. I think it will inspire loads of people, she has done so much and sport for women, people will pick up a bike and go down to the local track, just amazing. How hard has it been for her . Do you think the funding might improve because it is often based on Success And Beth has shown what she is capable of without the backing she might have had. To be honest we are fortunate we both have jobs and able to support beth to a certain level. It would have been more beneficial if she had had proper backing at certain times along the way but we did it unconditionally and would continue to do that and they would not have done it any other way. We wanted it for her, she has always been driven and focused and wanted to do the best you possibly could and it just kind of clicked over the past few days and leading up to this she has got more and more focused and it has ended the way it has which is mind boggling. You could not ask for more. She seems so matter of fact about it when she was interviewed and there was i not even knowing her and i shed a tear never knowing her and i shed a tear whenever be when anything. We win anything. I think her main dream was to get to the olympics and once she was there the next goal from that was to make a semi and when she got to the semi all she was thinking about was to get to her ultimate goal and she was pretty shocked with getting out front and doing it but she has not dropped a lap all day so she was obviously confident, she hasnt raced that much in the last 18 months but the last two races is with the girls she was at the olympics with an she is good friends with them and at was just an amazing achievement. She is not one of these people that brags, she is quite low key but also driven and she loves sharing the news and promoting the sport for girls. Has she ever taken you out on a bike, rebecca and rose . Definitely not but maybe now we can have a go. Day 7 of the olympics and another gold for teamgb as Bethany Shriever wins the womens Bmx Racing final. Just moments after team mate Kye Whyte claimed britains first olympic medal in the mens event. One question people quite often ask is how can we know for sure something will not emerge, that is an understandable concern and what i would say is we do not expect this vaccine crosses the placenta and we have some evidence to confirm does not. We expect it will be just like those vaccines we give an pregnancy like flu and Whooping Cough that we know do not cross the placenta and do not have a long term abide effects on the health of babies although they do actually have some good affects. Good afternoon. Welcome to bbc news. The latest data from the Office For National Statistics shows the number of people testing positive for coronavirus in england, wales and Northern Ireland continued to increase in the week to last saturday. It comes after several days of falling daily Case Numbers in the uk. So whats going on . A little earlier, our health Correspondentjim Reed explained. There is the daily data that you might hear every evening on the news, and that is measuring people who come forward normally with symptoms of the virus and Then test positive. Thats what its measuring. Those figures have been very encouraging for the last week or so, showing a sharp downward trend, as you can see here on the graph, and on the right Hand Side of the graph, you see that trend fall down. There is, though, a different way of measuring infections, also very carefully watched, and this is where the office of national statistics goes out and randomly samples people in the population, about half A Million people in the uk. That can measure notjust people with symptoms, but people who are not actually sick with covid at the time. That data is outjust in the last 15 minutes. It shows in the week to last saturday, actually, cases were rising slightly, so across the uk, just short of A Million people, 950,000 people had covariate in that week, up from about 830,000 the week before, up in england, wales and Northern Ireland, slightly down in scotland. So why these two different trends . It is confusing. A lot could be down to timing, so that the ons survey, office of national statistics, measures people up to last saturday, so it might have missed this very recent fall we have seen in those daily cases. As i say, it also measures people without symptoms. That can make a difference. The ons said, we will continue to investigate whether the current Wave Infections are stabilising or not. It remains too early to say. Im joined now by dr Chris Smith, a virologist at the university of cambridge. Thank you very much forjoining us again. Statistics are complicated at the best of times, arent they . This seems to be especially confusing. Could you unpick it a little more for us . I could you unpick it a little more for us . ~. , could you unpick it a little more for us . ~. , . , for us . I think it was benamin franklin who i for us . I think it was benamin franklin who said i for us . I think it was benamin franklin who said lies, i for us . I think it was benjamin | franklin who said lies, damned for us . I think it was benjamin I Franklin Who said lies, damned lies and statistics, wasnt it . Or was it Mark Twain . Yes, it is tricky, but it is a moving target. We have got the virus doing things, and also the population doing things, and politicians doing things to change what the population can do, and we are playing catch up with the data, because you have to make the changes, see how it affects the disease levels, but it takes time to do that, and Then make other measurement such as people going into hospital and losing their lives, etc. Overall, Ithink The Trend is very encouraging, and what we might be beginning to see here are the first sort of Green Shoots of the effects of what we are dubbing population immunity, or herd immunity. There is enough people in the population now who are immune to coronavirus that it is thwarting its ability to spread, and i think that is probably why we are seeing this blunted rise, but it is early days. It is certainly not over yet. It might be that there was a bit of a pump because of things like the football games, the euros, and that things settle down in the aftermath of that, but with the opening up going on, perhaps they will rise again a little bit. But we really have to be cautious about speculating too much, because it is early days. Speculating too much, because it is Earl Da S. ,. , speculating too much, because it is Earl Da S. , early days. Herd immunity, as You Sa , how early days. Herd immunity, as You Say. How many early days. Herd immunity, as You Say, how many people early days. Herd immunity, as You Say, how many people in early days. Herd immunity, as You Say, how many people in the i say, how many people in the population have got some kind of immunity, that comes from vaccines, of course, but also can come from the fact you have had covid 19. Hagar the fact you have had covid19. How Im Ortant the fact you have had covid19. How important is the fact you have had covid19. How important is it. The fact you have had covid 19. Him important is it, though, that people continue to come forward to have the vaccine rather than say, well, Everyone Else cover, i will be ok . Group that really deserve the attention most right now are younger people. The under 30s are to about 3 Million unvaccinated people, because about one person in three under the age of 30 has not come for a way forward for a dose of vaccine yet. That is in contrast to 90 of Uk Adults who have antibodies against the virus and have been vaccinated with at least one dose, and over 70 of adults who have had both doses that i consider double jab. We have a significant contingent of the population who are, lets face it, when you are younger, probably more likely to be at work or at school, more likely to be in places like public gatherings or public transport, and therefore more likely to have a bigger network of friends and contacts through which the virus could transmit. So that represents a group who, if they are vaccinated, we can significantly rein in the ability of the virus to spread, and notjust spread to other young people, of course, because some people, of course, because some people who are double vaccinated will still catch the infection and still could become seriously unwell. So we can all do our bit in order to rein it in and hopefully maintain this trend towards lower levels and therefore better control, particularly as we go into the autumn, because the thing thats really worrying a number of people, including myself, is what happens when we get towards the colder weather and all the usual seasonal suspects and challenges begin to rear their ugly heads and put pressure on the nhs for different reasons, and if we can go into debt as prepared as possible, we will have the best winter we can hope for. How concerned are you by some of the data i have read that has come out of israel where they are seeing that after a very successful, speedy Roll Out of the vaccination programme, they are seeing that some people are already losing immunity . We know that immunity means different things in different contexts, so, for instance, with a vaccine against measles, when you have been vaccinated against measles, you can regard yourself as immune to measles for life. But for other infections, and these coronaviruses seem to fit into this group, and so does, say, the flu vaccine, the immunity is more short lived, and there are a number of reasons. One is that the virus itself changes. It is a moving target. Flu evolves and changes all the time, so we update the vaccines. Coronavirus is no different. Thats where all these variants come from. At the same time, the immunity that you make in response, to either natural infections or having the vaccine, does not appear to be lifelong, and for that reason, its probably going to be necessary to top up immunity, at least in the most vulnerable groups, and at least in the short term. But what we dont know yet is whether, although the vaccines may not give you complete protection to infection, thats not the same as severe disease, and what we are seeing is significant numbers of people who can still catch the infection, but they dont become as severely unwell, and thats reflected in the Mortality Rates. When we look at last winters data, an older person who caught the infection might have a Mortality Rate of one in 60. That seems now to be won in 1000, because of the vaccine. So it may well be that we still see some breakthrough, we do get infections. We are indeed seeing that, but what that wont do is to turn into a severe case and make that person into a severe covid casualties. That person into a severe covid casualties that person into a severe covid casualties. ,. ,. , casualties. How useful are Covid Vaccine passports casualties. Ya i think that is a valid point, and while we are very, very optimistic about the ability of the to save lives, their impact in terms of actually protecting people from just catching and and a Symptomatically Passing on the infection are reduced. They may be knocked down but not completely stopping the spread of the infection. It is more limited in terms of what is can deliver, and therefore i think Vaccine Passports might have a role to play in the short term. I think the government are using this as an instrument to encourage people to take up the vaccine, but longer term, encourage people to take up the vaccine, but longerterm, ithink the role of Vaccine Passports will be more limited for that reason. The number of Drug Deaths in scotland has risen to a Record Level for the seventh year in a row. There was a total of 1,339 Drug Related Fatalities in 2020 the highest rate in europe. Our Correspondentjames Shaw in glasgow says the problem has been described as a public health emergency. One of the things that is particularly shocking is the fact that it has been going on for so many years the seventh Record Year for the Drug Death Rate in scotland, and in fact, the Drugs Policy Minister here, angela constance, has admitted that it is a national disgrace, as she put it, and the number of deaths, the death rate, was unacceptably high. To put it in context, this is 3. 5 times the Drug Death Rate for the whole of the uk. And it is particularly affecting deprived parts of scotland, much more than it is the least deprived areas, and that gap has been increasing over the last 20 years. Now, the Scottish Government is setting aside £250 million to deal with this, to try and make sure that everyone who needs it gets treatment and that there is Emergency Treatment for people who suffer from overdoses, but the opposition, the political opposition here, the scottish conservatives, say really that the scottish Governments Response is inadequate. There needs to be legislation, a right to recovery built to guarantee that people get the treatment they need. James shaw. Earlier, i spoke to doctor john budd, whos a gp in Edinburgh Caring for the homeless and a Board Member of the scottish drugs forum, and he explained some of the factors that have contributed to those figures in scotland. The problem with drugs is that it is multifactorial. Likely to be a complex set of circumstances leading to the situation we are in but it goes back to the late 1970s, 1980s with the economic recession. Scotland was hit particularly badly by deindustrialisation after the war, worse than other parts of the country. Weve had, probably, a bit of a disastrous Housing Policy since that time which has broken up communities and caused Housing Schemes which have deteriorated in terms of living circumstances the people and circumstance for people and over the last ten years, 15 years, weve seen rising levels of poverty as a result of the economic downturn in 2007 8 and ten years of austerity from the Uk Conservative led governments which have undermined public services and made treatment services far less available to people, so its a combination of those factors. A combination of social and economic factors. The Scottish Government has announced a quarter of A Billion pounds to be invested over five years. Now, there is clearly no single answer to this but what sort of things might help improve the situation . Well, that reinvestment in treatment services and support services is really welcome, and there is money also going in to support individuals and families who are affected by Drug Use. There is money going into actually support people with lived and living experience of Drug Use to actually raise The Voice of those people in terms of Shaping Policy and, hopefully, in shaping services and even the delivery of services, so those things are really positive and to be welcomed. I think we need to have an understanding, as i said, but Drug Dependence is a long Term Problem that needs long term solutions. The decriminalisation of Drug Use for personal use would be a hugely positive step forward, so rather than punishing people for a long term health condition, we would actually help to reduce the stigma and encourage people into Treatment And Support. We need to, with that investment with Treatment And Support services needs to take very much a Harm Reduction Approach to meet people where they are, provide compassionate, humane care. We need to be accessible and going out to where people are for those that struggle to access services centrally, and we need a full range of treatment options. That was drjohn budd. Labour is calling for the government to bring forward the date on which fully vaccinated people will no longer have to self isolate in england. Thats right, there will be pretty big changes in wales in l pretty big changes in wales in august to seven. Theyre planning, should all the data go in the right direction, to make some of the changes that were already introduced in england on july the 19th, reopening nightclubs, changing social distancing requirements and so on, though it will still be a requirement to wear masks and some settings, face coverings. But the biggest change is this one on Self Isolation. If you have been double jabbed and are a close contact of somebody who has coronavirus, you would no longer be required to self isolate for ten days. You would be required to take a test, and as You Say, that is nine days ahead of the planned date in england, and a couple of days ahead of scotland, so yes, the four nations are going their different directions, but what Sir Keir Starmer is arguing is that effectively, the Whole Uk should move towards that system on August The 7th. He argues this would save many days lost to Self Isolation, around 700,000 people last week being advised to self isolate. He says the economy is being crippled. But he also said the Government Hasnt really fully explained august the 16th. Their explanation is quite simply this, that it will allow more people to get vaccinations. He asked on what scientific basis with the date of August The 7th chosen . Brute date of August The 7th chosen . We have been talking to scientists throughout the 18 months of this pandemic on a very regular basis. Its pandemic on a very regular basis. Its not pandemic on a very regular basis. Its not the pandemic on a very regular basis. Its not the date that is driving it, its not the date that is driving it. It its not the date that is driving it. It is its not the date that is driving it. It is the its not the date that is driving it, it is the principle of the double it, it is the principle of the Double Vaccination. And the idea, as welsh Double Vaccination. And the idea, as Welsh Labour have put forward, that if you Welsh Labour have put forward, that if you are Welsh Labour have put forward, that if you are double vaccinated, you dont if you are double vaccinated, you dont have if you are double vaccinated, you dont have to isolate if you have been dont have to isolate if you have been in dont have to isolate if you have been in contact with someone, as is automatically the rule at the moment. At the moment, we have hundred moment. At the moment, we have hundred thousands of people a week isolating, hundred thousands of people a week isolating, you can see the chaos that is isolating, you can see the chaos that is causing. Interesting, of course, that this is all about Double Vaccination rather than days. There are some people in his own party are certainly plenty of conservative mps who are saying, why not simply an Self Isolation right now . That something Keir Starmer called for. His answer is that it takes time for changes to be introduced and this is a pragmatic and sensible solution to the chaos caused by the ping the pingdemic. It has been suggested the motivation are simply chasing newspaper headlines, you can see that there might be some political advantages, whatever the medical ones, because he will Then be aligning himself with those people in business and politics calling for borisjohnson to change his mind in august to 16. That said, if the Labour Leader was calling for something to happen, that probably makes it less likely that probably makes it less likely that the government will thank you very much. Will concede. Hello this is bbc news, the headlines. A historic day for Britains Bmx riders at the Tokyo Olympics. Bethany shriever wins the womens racing final. Just moments after team mate Kye Whyte claimed britains first olympic medal in the mens event. Latest figures from Ons Show that the number of people testing positive for coronavirus in england, wales and Northern Ireland continue to rise although cases have fallen in scotland. Get your Covid Jab the message from englands Chief Midwife to women who are pregnant Drug Deaths in scotland reach a new Record Level for the seventh year in a row. More than 1,300 people died last year. And disruption to Dairy Deliveries, says a major company, due to a dip in the number of drivers well be getting more reaction after todays Team Gb olympic wins. Beths shriever raced to gold in the bmx womens competition and her mother, kate told us how proud she was once she gets going and is out the gate as with the races she did in the early hours being out front and looking comfortable, i am just so proud she did it and it is amazing. Lets go back to bethany shreever s stunning performance in the Womens Bmx finals. The 22 year old used Crowd Funding to raise 50 Thousand pounds to keep her Olympic Dream on track, and it paid off with a gold. This is the moment her bethany s parents spoke to her after shed picked up her medal. There it is. Look at that. Earlier i spoke to bethany s family to get their reaction. I think it will inspire loads of people, she has done so much in sport for women, people will pick up a bike and go down to the local track, just amazing. How hard has it been for her . Do you think the funding might improve because it is often based on Success And Beth has shown what she is capable of without the backing she might have had. To be honest we are fortunate we both have jobs and able to support beth to a certain level. It would have been more beneficial if she had had proper backing at certain times along the way but we did it unconditionally and would continue to do that and i would not have done it any other way. We wanted it for her, she has always been driven and focused and wanted to do the best you possibly could and it just kind of clicked over the past few days and leading up to this she has got more and more focused and it has ended the way it has which is mind boggling. You could not ask for more. She seems so matter of fact about it when she was interviewed and there was i not even knowing her and i shed a tear whenever we win anything. I think her main dream was to get to the olympics and once she was there the next goal from that was to make a semi and when she got to the semi all she was thinking about was to get to her ultimate goal and she was pretty shocked with getting out front and doing it but she has not dropped a lap all day so she was obviously confident, she hasnt raced that much in the last 18 months but the last two races is with the girls she was at the olympics with and she is good friends with them and it was just an amazing achievement. She is not one of these people that brags, she is quite low key but also driven and she loves sharing the news and promoting the sport for girls. Has she ever taken you out on a bike, rebecca and rose . Definitely not but maybe now we can have a go. Staying with the olympics, when a country holds the games theres often a big effort to clean up and redevelop parts of the host city. In tokyo, this has meant moving hundreds of Homeless People from near the main stadium as Sofia Bettiza reports. The Tokyo Olympics have begun, but this is what you dont See Hundreds of Homeless People in Central Tokyo Being forced to hide from sight. Translation they want us to be invisible. Since japan won the bid to host the games in 2013, the authorities have taken a tough approach. Parks were locked and lit up at night, Street Tents around Train Stations and olympic venues removed. 64 year old yamada used to live here. You can see the Olympic Stadium behind him. One day, he found these Eviction Notices plastered all over his belongings. These people have been trying to help yamada. We have to build a fence, he says, to prevent people from entering this area during the olympics. Hes been evicted three times. Chanting. Ogawa has been homeless for nearly 20 years. He hates how his community has been treated because of the olympics. Translation if youre homeless, a tent is all you have got. Its like losing your home. They suddenly come and take your property away. Its the biggest struggle. Have Homeless People in tokyo being pressured to disappear ahead of the olympics. Well, the authorities try to hide the poorest of the poor because they want to show the clean city to the foreign medias, or also the athletes. Actually, some of the officials who try to kick them out very clearly say that. Please just hide yourself during the olympic games. We contacted the japanese government and the international olympics committee, but nobody replied to us. The government has said in the past that theyre trying to get Homeless People off the streets and into shelters. They deny forcing them out because of the olympics. But those Shelters Cram three to four Bunk Beds in very small rooms. Most Homeless People injapan are elderly and unvaccinated and think its safer to sleep on the streets. Yamada has found shelterfor the night. Its raining heavily, so hes taken refuge under a bridge near the Olympic Stadium. If they lose any public places they can stay at night, Then they cannot survive. It is unfair and inhumane. But, in the morning, he will get evicted once again. Sofia bettiza, bbc news, tokyo. Israel has become the first country in the world to start giving a third Coronavirus Vaccination to those aged sixty and older. The israeli president Isaac Herzog kicked off the new campaign by receiving the Booster Injection with his wife. Israel was one of the first and fastest in giving vaccinations to its citizens, but it has started restoring some restrictions amid a surge in infections. Ran baliser is the chairman of israels national advisory Experts Team on Covid I9 response. He explains the reasons behind the move. We have seen an increasing surge of cases in the last two months that we have not been able to control with methods that we reintroduced, including masks, as well as a green Pass Policy in the last few days that was reinstated. The numbers right now are we have over 2000 cases per day, which is numbers we have not seen for the last six months. A good proportion of these cases are among the elderly who have been vaccinated. So we have a clear indication that the vaccinated elderly that were vaccinated over five or six months ago are not as protected as they have been. But it is quite difficult to draw clear conclusions and specific estimates on Vaccine Effectiveness in the current situation in israel, because the cases, the number of severe cases is still relatively small and the population that has been inflicted most severely until now has been concentrated in specific localities and sectors. So this is not a country wide dissemination yet, which makes it a little more difficult to have a sound estimate. However, it is clear that in terms of likelihood of infection, there is a reduction, a significant reduction in Vaccine Effectiveness regarding severe illness. It is a little bit early to have a clear estimate. The first person to be convicted under hong kongs controversial new Security Law has been sentenced to nine years injail. Tong Ying Kit rode a motorbike into Police Officers while flying a flag with the Protest Slogan liberate hong kong, revolution of our times. More than 100 people have been arrested since the law came into force last year. The headlines on bbc news. A historic day for Britains Bmx riders at the Tokyo Olympics. For the first time since 2019 audiences will be back, but only allowed in if they have proof of a negative Covid Test or double jab. People will also be encouraged to wear masks. More than 2,000 musicians from 30 orchestras will play every day over the next six weeks in a celebration of live music not seen on this scale in the uk since the pandemic. Earlier i spoke with Abel Selaocoe, whos a South African Cellist And Singer who will take part in the proms. I asked him how he sings and plays cello at the same time. Thank you. It is All In One Voice. The voice is the master of all. Our instruments imitating The Voice and Human Spirit, so itjust connects for me. It is quite a physical instrument the cello, does it not make a singing more difficult . It is called practice and will, wanting to translate you make the effort and it becomes effortless. What is it like taking part in the bbc proms at the royal Albert Hall . It is a Dream Come True, coming from a township in South Africa and getting to this point is full circle for me and to be able to celebrate people and Community And Heritage and educate people about other cultures, i am very excited and privileged. How did you get started playing . In the township, my brother can teach anything so he decided to get me into music to get us away from the township on the weekends so he took me to a school in soweto which had no resources so we shared one instrument and i chose the cello and we shared it on the weekend and when it comes to the week he would teach me to improve, we drew the strings on paper, a, d, g and that is when you put yourfingers and be put your fingers and we put into practice so this process went on for a while until i got my own cello and from Then on it was History And Finding opportunities, i was very blessed. How important is it to you to get back playing in front of real audiences . Extremely. It is good for the musicians but also for people so this whole gathering especially with my concert on the 15th is about communal healing, getting together with people and looking back on time and also processing what has happened through the music. It is extremely important for everybody involved. Could you play a little tune for us . He plays and sings. Thank you so much. Now its time for a look at the weather with helen willetts. Storm evert has brought some unseasonably windy weather already to parts of south wales and southwest england, where winds have exceeded 70 miles an hour, wind gusts in the needles, but quite widely exceeded 50 miles an hour and exposed areas. And theyve yet to escalate further east. So the winds will pick up here for the next few hours around that storm system. But as well as that, weve got these bands of showers or longer spells of rain. Some of them will turn heavy and thundery with some hail forecast, particularly across the eastern side of england this afternoon. Some more persistent right for Northern England and parts of north west. A few showers certainly for Northern Ireland, for heavy ones here and for parts of scotland. The far north, a little Bit Cooler and cloudier under a Weather Front. But its the south of scotland, parts of Northern Ireland, where we could feel around 19 or 20, quite pleasantly warm with the lighter winds. But clearly, it feels cooler across england and wales, where well still have a number of showers and thunderstorms into the evening, starting to fade away. Always the chance of some rain for Eastern Parts of both scotland and england. And a subtle change in Wind Direction means it will freshen up through the night, but certainly not a Cold One for most of us. But it will feel cooler than it should at this time of year for the weekend. And that is down to the Wind Direction. That wind coming right the way down from the arctic, warming up, of course, as it comes over the sea, but also picking up some moisture so therell be various little Weather Systems running their way south. So over the weekend, were expecting things to feel a little on the cool side with some scattered showers, but also some sunny spots, particularly for the northern half of the country. I think for scotland, northern western scotland, Northern Ireland, fewer showers. But you can see Weather Fronts close to Eastern Areas, always rather cloudy anyway in northern scotland. But this Weather System working its way southwards willjust generate a few heavy showers in england and wales, generally more prone to some heavy, slow moving showers at times as they start to set up with the strength of the july sunshine. 20 in the sunshine in sheltered parts of southern scotland, 20 21 the south, and a little bit warmer than today because well have lost that brisk wind. But again, that northerly mix is prone to showers, particularly in Eastern Areas initially on sunday, perhaps some Patchy Rain on this Weather Front and Then these heavy showers to the south of that, perhaps a little bit more confined to southern areas compared with saturday, certainly much drier for many parts of scotland and Northern Ireland. But there are warnings out and the details of those are on our website. This is bbc news.
