And wildfires threaten parts of greece as strong Winds Fan the flames through the Countryside North of athens. Welcome to our viewers on pbs in america and around the globe. Police officers who tried to prevent Donald Trumps supporters from storming the us Capitol Building Injanuary have been giving dramatic evidence at the start of an inquiry into what happened. The panel will look at the reasons for the riot, which happened as lawmakers gathered to certify President Biden s election victory. But the inquiry s already been undermined by partisan divisions with many republicans refusing to take part. Our correspondent Barbara Plett Usher reports from washington. Do you swear to affirm that the testimony you are about to give. Police officers who defended the capitoljust months ago formed a steady Blue Line as they prepared to testify. It was a sharp contrast to the Chaos Injanuary when they were overrun by a mob of trump supporters trying to overturn the results of an election that hed lost. The committee replayed the shocking images, Reminding Americans whats at stake in the investigation of how and why this happened. I can feel myself losing oxygen, and Recall Thinking to myself, this is how i am going to die, defending this entrance. I heard chanting from some of the crowd. Get his gun and kill him with his own gun. Everybone was reliving that dark day, convinced this enquiry was needed to prevent another attack on the peaceful transfer of power. There was anger at republicans accused of downplaying what unfolded. The indifference shown to my colleagues is disgraceful for democrats, suspect Number One is Donald Trump. They blame him for inciting the Rioters Something he denies. Only two republican lawmakers agreed to sit on the committee, saying issues much bigger than Party Politics are in play. You know, democracy is not defined by our bad days. The republican leadership is trying to send a different message from a much smaller platform. Speaker pelosi will only pick people onto the committee who will ask the questions she wants asked. That becomes a failed committee and a failed report. A sham that no one can believe. The man at the heart of the investigation is not at the hearing, and probably wont be making an appearance, but Donald Trump continues to loom large over the republican party and over american politics. As do the divisions he left in his wake, in congress and in the country, the investigation is unlikely to fix that. Barbara plett usher, bbc news, washington. Well, earlier i spoke to former fbi special Agent Tracy Walder who helped explain the current investigative and Prosecution Process involving those accused of storming the Us Capitol. In regards to the criminal investigations it is somewhat of an arduous and technical process, basically we have about 500 that are still outstanding in regards to prosecution and in regards to penalties that have been given to people. It has become very difficult because washington needs to sign off and prosecutors have discretion over that so it has just become a very long and over six month process. What sort of things are these 500 people being charged with . There are state and federal offences. Where do they fall . A great question and it does depend on what the person did. We have some that are being charged with Minor Tress Pass charges and others being charged with beating a federal officer. So there is a huge gamut that runs from a six Month Prison Sentence to 1 20 years and it is part of the difficulty as well, we really do not have an umbrella federal charging statute that could really charge all of them with one crime, just with varying degrees of that crime. And how are people being charged . I prosecutors finding it easy enough to get witness statements, given the size of the crowds we saw . You would think it would be easy as much of this played out on iphones, twitter, facebook and social media. In all honesty, the biggest problem that they have right now is too much evidence, having to comb through all of that and pare that down and decide on what are the most prosecutable charges that we can put on these people and, also, how can we get these people to strike a deal . The mountain of evidence is what is causing this delay. We have heard of profit is being made by the prosecutors. What are they and how do they work . Basically with a proffer, what they do is perhaps if someone is charged with a light felony they could drop that to a misdemeanour if the person agrees to plead guilty to the lesser charge, a misdemeanour, and then provide a government with access to their social media, their cellphones and those types of things and what thatis those types of things and what that is is a way for the government to get access to any of those contacts. It is assumed that a good deal of them have access to domestic terrorism organisations like the proud boys in the hope is that they getting access to that they getting access to that information will allow the government to get ahead of this and get ahead of future attacks. And get ahead of future attacks and get ahead of future attacks. , . , attacks. Former Fbi Agent speaking attacks. Former Fbi Agent speaking to attacks. Former Fbi Agent speaking to me attacks. She won gold a couple of days ago in the 400 metres freestyle and was on the celebrations on the sideline from her Coach And Today she has added another gold to her tally winning the 200 metres freestyle and, as you say, with an Olympic Record. She is a slow starter so she was behind in The Field but in the last 50 metres she powered through to win. A really good result for her and i can tell you some of the other races there was gold for a hungarian swimmer, so far ahead of The Field he finished one second beyond everyone else and so much so that he also almost looked disappointed. He and his team were going for a World Record and they did not quite get that time and i can tell you as well that japan swimmer has won the womens 200 metre individual medley, a second gold for yui ohashi. The dutch won the Silver Medal and bonds for the irish but there was a lot of drama in the Mens Event because greek britain have won gold in that Eventin Britain have won gold in that event in every olympics since 2000 however they steered out of their lane into another alongside the italians so there was a lot of drama there and none for the australians who were able to push clear and win and you could almost see the Shock And Surprise on their faces as they won full. A great result for them. I can also tell you in the rugby sevens, we just had the semifinals so fiji are the defending champions and are through to the final where they will face New Zealand and in the pool right now, katie lee decker, one of the Starss Inaction in the 1500 metres, a longer race that will take about minutes but she was leading and that will be her first opportunity for Herfirst Gold will be her first opportunity for her first gold of the games. I think the cycling is going to be really good because we had the Road Races on saturday and sunday for the men and today it is against the clock, time trials. The womens one will get under way shortly and remembering that Road Race we had the dutch rider thinking she had won gold but had not realised there was a rider ahead so when she crossed the line in second she was celebrating the win. She will hope for a goal in the time trial but the bigger threat in that will come from her compatriot and the usas chloe descartes. In the Mens Event, Belgiums Cyclist is probably the favourite. Health officials in the us are urging people to resume wearing masks indoors in areas where the Delta Variant of coronavirus has sparked a rise in cases. The announcement reverses the advice issued two months ago. The centres for Disease Control says all teachers and students should wear masks indoors when schools re open after the summer break, regardless of their vaccination status. President biden has again appealed to all americans to be vaccinated. So why the U Turn . Heres the bbc s North America Correspondent peter bowes. This really reflects a growing concern of the federal government and the centre for Disease Control and prevention about the surge in the number of cases of coronavirus around the country, especially in certain states like florida where there has been a real peaking of new infections in recent days and weeks. So the advice now and it is an advisory body, a Government Advisory Body on health and infectious diseases and its saying all americans whether vaccinated or not, should wear a mask indoors in public settings. Interestingly, i am in Los Angeles where that rule was brought in here about ten days ago because this is indeed one of the areas where there has been a surge in the number of cases and as you say, President Biden once again urging all americans if they have not already, to have the covid 19 vaccine and the president speaking a short time ago at the White House said he is considering requiring all federal workers, government workers, to have the vaccination as well. Some Media Outlets are saying he will announce this on thursday, perhaps with the caveat they should either have the vaccination or at least have regular tests and of course federal workers, there are about 4 Million around the country including postalworkers, members of the military, immigration agents, People Who work in social security departments, that would be a significant move and again, reflecting the very serious concern that this isnt beaten, coronavirus is very much here and that surge in numbers is really concerning Health Officials. With low pressure right across the uk, there were more heavy, even torrential thundery downpours around on tuesday. One storm captured on camera by one of our Weather Watchers in belfast. Heres the area of low pressure. Now, later in the week, it will move away, and then the showers are going to ease. But as it exits the scene, it draws in some Cooler Air as we move from july into august. Now, enduring some of the heaviest rain for wednesday will be this part of scotland, with a met office amberwarning. Its not the only area, though, thats going to see some Heavy Rain during wednesday. More widely across parts of scotland and northern england, therell be some areas of Heavy Rain to begin the day. Notice this area of rain in scotland. This is the one that becomes slow moving across some central and northern areas during the day with that prolonged rainfall. Elsewhere, its a case of, yes, therell be some sunshine around, but look at the showers getting going for the afternoon. Some of these heavy, thundery, with hail, brightness in between. A breezier day for much of england and wales, and the winds gusty around these showers, though they may perhaps move through rather more quickly than theyve been inclined to do in recent days. And as for your temperatures, well, many of us just in the teens. Parts of Eastern England up to around 20, maybe 21 degrees celsius. Overnight and into thursday, the worst of these downpours will slowly ease, and the heaviest of the rain in scotland will also begin to ease going into thursday morning. But problems with Flooding And Disruption may continue even beyond the end of the heaviest rainfall. And temperatures are a bit lower as thursday starts. Back to this area of low pressure, Notice Itsjourney away from us is under way during thursday. Its around its Back Edge as it moves away. We get the Cooler Air moving in, and still bands of showers around as well, though maybe not as frequent as theyve been recently. And there will still be a bit of sunshine to be had, but catch a shower, it could still be heavy and thundery as it moves through on thursday. Again, for the most part, temperatures just into the high teens, a few spots reaching 20, maybe 21 degrees. Temperatures arent any higher at the weekend, but what is clear by then, there will be fewer showers around and what showers there are will be less intense.
