A man told how he tried to save his wife and nine year old son after they got into difficulties in Loch Lomond in scotland. A close friend also died in the tragedy after two families stopped at a Beauty Spot on their way home from holiday. They were among six people who drowned in scotlands Waters in what the Fire Service has described as one of the worst weekends in memory. Alexandra mackenzie reports. Loch lomond, the perfect location on a summers day. But although inviting, the Water is cold and deep and can be extremely dangerous. On saturday evening, two families from glasgow were enjoying the last day of their holiday. Three of them drowned here at Ardlui 29 year old edina 0lahova, her nine year old son Rana Haris Ali and Family Friend 39 year old muhammad asim riaz. His seven year old son was in a critical condition in hospital. Rana Varis Ali said he tried in vain to save his family and friends. When i came out from the Water, i see my wife, and i tried to pull off my shirt and give it to her, if she can catch. She cant. After, someone gave me a phone for Emergency Services. He is now being comforted at home, struggling to come to terms with what happened. They were enjoying their holidays, and all of the sudden, this incident happened, you know, and we all are shocked. And one of the kids is still in critical condition in hospital, you know. The recent warm weather has enticed many of us to the Water. Across the uk, more than 30 people have drowned in the last two weeks. In scotland, six people lost their lives at the weekend. I think we will want to reflect on the horrors of the last few days, about what more can be done in future to educate young people in particular about the danger that Water can pose, but i think right now, first and foremost, were all thinking of those who have lost their lives, those who have been bereaved and also taking the opportunity to remind people that Water can be dangerous. Those who run the National Park at Loch Lomond said it was one of the worst weekends in its history. They said it had been challenging and sobering and had given cause for reflection. Alexandra mackenzie reporting. Lets speak now to michael avril, the chair of Water safety scotland, a voluntary organisation which aims to reduce accidental drowning deaths in scotland. I think your target is to reduce them by 50 in quite a short period of time, and its been a truly terrible past few days. Is there one single factor that has caused this or if variety of factors . Single factor that has caused this or if variety of factors . Yeah, that I Ma be or if variety of factors . Yeah, that I May be to or if variety of factors . Yeah, that | I May be to start off by offering my condolences to the families of all those affected at the weekend was not thanks to the Emergency Services and numbers of the public that attempted to aid the people they got in trouble. Every single bit of Water in scotland can be dangerous. It is always below 15 celsius and cold Water-shock'>Water Shock is one of the key concerns that we have for people entering the Water. Just concerns that we have for people entering the Water. Entering the Water. Just describe what the effects entering the Water. Just describe what the effects of entering the Water. Just describe what the effects of cold entering the Water. Just describe what the effects of cold Water i entering the Water. Just describe i what the effects of cold Water-shock'>Water Shock is . Because this effect as i understand even quite experienced swimmers as well . Understand even quite experienced swimmers as well . Nobody is immune to cold Water swimmers as well . Nobody is immune to cold Water-shock'>Water Shock, swimmers as well . Nobody is immune to cold Water-shock'>Water Shock, but swimmers as well . Nobody is immune to cold Water-shock'>Water Shock, but some swimmers as well . Nobody is immune to cold Water-shock'>Water Shock, but some people | to cold Water-shock'>Water Shock, but some people do suffer more than others. Cold Water-shock'>Water Shock affects you in different ways. It affect your ability to be able to swim, your arms and legs do not quite do as they are supposed to. It affect your ability to breathe. It can decrease your breathing rate, which is always dangerous with new when youre in the Water. And also it increases the Heart Rate as her body start to panic, so the advice is, wherever cold Water-shock'>Water Shock might be approaching and starting to become a problem, turn over onto your back, put your and legs out almost like a starfish, on your back, take a big, Deep Breath and just spend approximately one minute to two minutes just calming yourself down before you attempt to do anything else. As the feelings of Panic Start to go away, your body starts to return to normal, that is when you can start to shout for help or possibly even, if youre close by the shore, attempt to swim back to shore. , ,. , the shore, attempt to swim back to shore. , ,. , shore. Currents presumably are another factor shore. Currents presumably are another factor for shore. Currents presumably are another factor for what shore. Currents presumably are another factor for what about i shore. Currents presumably are l another factor for what about the number of people who are just going in the Water to cool off, who Cannot Swim . Is that the case in some of these tragedies as well, they have suddenly found themselves out of their depth literally . Their depth literally . Yeah, you need to be their depth literally . Yeah, you need to be very, their depth literally . Yeah, you need to be very, very their depth literally . Yeah, you need to be very, very careful i need to be very, very careful whenever we go near any kind of Water. The biggest dangers are what you cannot see. Are there underWater obstructions . Are there currents pushing you in certain directions . And also that depth was to what is the depth . This can affect both people who can swim and especially those that Cannot Swim, but everybody can do the same thing, by trying to spot those dangers and not enter the Water if they can, if they cant see it is safe to do so. Just hel us cant see it is safe to do so. Just help us with cant see it is safe to do so. Just help us with one cant see it is safe to do so. Just help us with one thing. I think most of us who can swim and swim frequently, if we saw someone in trouble, our immediate response would be to go in and try and do that . What is your advice, bear in mind all these dangers here . Please do not enter mind all these dangers here . Please do not enter the mind all these dangers here . Please do not enter the Water. Mind all these dangers here . Please do not enter the Water. If mind all these dangers here . Please do not enter the Water. If you see i do not enter the Water. If you see some of the else in trouble, shout the Float Message across them, get them onto the back, to float. Then immediately try and call 999 and speak to the Emergency Services. If youre at the coast of scotland, is the coast guard, and if youre inland, it is Scotch Fire and Rescue Service for someone to get through and help is on its way, then start to look around. Is there any public rescue will comment you might be able to use . If there else is around you . Do you have a football, to have something that conflicted that person in the Water . Shout to them, tell them help is coming, and encourage them to try and continue to float for as long as possible. But dont go in. Michael avril, thank you very much indeed. Two 14 year old boys have been found guilty of murdering 13 year old 0lly Stephens, who was stabbed in a park in reading injanuary. Lets return to happier events now. The news that the Diver Tom Daley has achieved a lifetime ambition by Winning gold on his fourth attempt at his fourth olympic games. He did it with his Diving Partner Matty lee in tokyo. It was on a day dubbed magic monday, when Team Gb won three Golds Adam Peaty in the 100 Metres Breast Stroke and the Cyclist Tom Pidcock won the mens cross country mountain biking. Well, we can speak now to the Actor And Comedian 0mid djalili, who took part in an Itv Programme Splash eight years ago. You dived off a ten metre diving board. Tom daley was one of the judges on the show back in 2013. 0mid, whos followed toms career, sent a tweet to tom and his diving partner, matty lee, congratulating them. You join us now. We cannot show the footage itv. I would not have done that and goodness knows how you did what did you say today and did he get back to you . I you say today and did he get back to ou . ,. , you . I ust sent him a message, we have you . Ijust sent him a message, we have been testing you . Ijust sent him a message, we have been testing before, you . Ijust sent him a message, we have been testing before, and i you . Ijust sent him a message, we | have been testing before, and i have to tell you, he was notjust a judge, he was a trainer he trained us to do it and what might be interesting for us to know is he shared a Team Gb Secret which they had learned in 2012 to teach us so called novices to dive. I cannot think of anything worse than diving off a ten Metre Board, and i did it to overcome some fears, and i said, tom, i cannot do this, and he said, i will tell you a secret. He looked at me intently, he said, you have to think outside the box, push yourself, go beyond you ever thought, with your courage, and just when you do it, just think how good you will feel and how well you will sleep, and when he said that, i dived and i did it again. I mean, it hurt. It is not an easy thing to go into the Water with the impact, but he was. That was the thing. And i actually said to them afterwards, he said i have to Win the gold, because there the chinese guys, they are not more talented, but they work harder, so if they Get Up at five a m. , im gotta Get Up at tram, if they train six days a week, im going to train seven days a week, and this was just such a massive moment for him and matty lee. And this is matty lees first 0lympics, matty lee. And this is matty lees first olympics, by the way, and it really shows the power of the underdog, that we are seeing something amazing, we had the tunisian he amazingly won his race as well in the eighth lane. I think Tom Daley showed that spirit, that hard work and dedication, you will achieve your goal, and he did not need to do it, but he did. Everybody thought he had won a gold before, he had only won two bronzes. But thought he had won a gold before, he had only won two bronzes. Thought he had won a gold before, he had only won two bronzes. But he has won lots of other had only won two bronzes. But he has won lots of other competitions. I had only won two bronzes. But he has won lots of other competitions. This l won lots of other competitions. This was the thing. And on this attempt he has got it. Just tell us. I watched this footage, and you did the swallow, didnt you . And it hurt because you did not quite go in as a bird, necessarily, dropping into the Water like a Siegel Or Something like that, but in terms of that Self Belief and that fear, did you get the impression that the fear existed even for professional divers like Tom And Matty that they have to repeat themselves how good is going to be . And for goodness sake, theyre doing somersaults and all that, are they not . It is notjust throWing yourself off i Sayjust Off a ten Metre Board . You throWing yourself off i say Ust Off a ten Metre Board . I throWing yourself off i say Ust Off a ten Metre Board . You said the riaht off a ten Metre Board . You said the right thing. Off a ten Metre Board . You said the right thing, because, off a ten Metre Board . You said the right thing, because, a, off a ten Metre Board . You said the right thing, because, a, it off a ten Metre Board . You said the right thing, because, a, it is off a ten Metre Board . You said the right thing, because, a, it is not i right thing, because, a, it is not easy, b, it is dangerous. There is a fear factor. Easy, b, it is dangerous. There is a fearfactor. When i did splash , they were thinking it was a tsunami after i got out, because it is so awful it hurts. You cannot do more than eight to ten dives a day, because it hurts, and you get injured. So many times, the timing has been off and it hits the side of the full, theyre quite serious injuries. It also when youre doing things with harnesses, you can hurt yourself doing that outside the pool yourself doing that outside the pool, so, yeah, there is a fear factor, they do have to overcome this mentally as well as physically, and one of the reasons why did splash was to learn from these athletes, to learn what it is that they can work out their comfort zone, and push themselves, and when you do that, i did it in my 40s and its certain he gave me a new push in my life. Cities 0lympics its certain he gave me a new push in my life. Cities olympics are extremely inspiring for people who have been at home, who have been in lockdown, to actually get out that, get back into training, get back into routine. Into routine. A clear up operation is continuing after a Months Rainfall fell in london injust one day. It brought Flash Flooding to parts of the capital yesterday. Whipps Cross Hospital declared a major incident after it lost power and was forced to evacuate patients. London Fire Brigade received more than 1,000 calls, as roads quickly turned to rivers and motorists became stranded in their vehicles. And homeowners were again mopping up in the Space Ofjust a few weeks. Tom edwards has the details. More like a river than a dlr station, this was Pudding Mill Lane last night, as nearly two inches of rain fell in just a few hours. This was hampstead, as Water inundated roads. In worcester park, in south london, firefighters had to rescue drivers from their cars, submerged in the floodWaters. And at hammersmith bridge, the Drainage System was overwhelmed. Excess Water-and-sewerage'>Water And Sewerage is meant to overflow into the thames. Instead, it was sent into the air. At leyton, there was also heavy Flash Flooding. And this was camberwell. This was tottenham, in north london. This is the second time in a fortnight that parts of london have flooded. This morning, at Whipps Cross and newham hospitals, flooding meant some patients had appointments and operations cancelled. 100 patients were moved to other sites. Experts say as the climate warms, Extreme Weather will become more common, and more severe. The amount of extreme rainfall is increasing, and what we mean by extreme rainfall is the hourly rainfall, the daily total, and also the multi day, three, four day totals. So those are the numbers that people will look at when they look at extreme rainfall, and so we have got good evidence from all over the world, where we have long records, that these have been increasing. So were getting more rain in a given amount of time. London has been warned that some of its crucial infrastructure, like roads and tube stations, are susceptible to flooding. At the moment, the Drainage And Sewage Systems Cant cope with this amount of rain. In london, we have a victorian Drainage System, and it is over capacity, so its not being maintained. Its also, we havent done anything since the victorians, essentially. Both our sewage and our Water'>Surface Water drains are incredibly ancient, and Theyjust Werent made to deal with the numbers that we have in the capital at the moment. Tonight, the mayor says he wants more powers and resources from government to tackle impacts of climate change. Experts say the capital has to now become more proactive in planning for these types of weather events. Tom edwards, bbc london. Canterbury cathedral a place of worship for more than 1,400 years is one of the oldest christian structures in england. The Windows of its Stained Glass have helped create a sense of awe, bringing Colour And Light into the building. Now scientists, using specially designed equipment, have discovered that some of the Stained Glass panels may be among the oldest in the world. 0ur Science Correspondent Pallab Ghosh reports. Canterbury cathedral is among the oldest churches in england. Inside, its stunning Windows depict symbolic religious scenes. This series was thought to have been made in the 13th century, but some of the panels, including this one of the prophet nathan, have now been Re Dated. For decades, historians have thought that some of these panels were made earlier than the others, because theyre different in style. Now, using a new technique, scientists have confirmed that not only are they much older, but they may well be among the oldest in the world. Its only come to light now because of this device, called a Windowliser. It may not look like much, but it was developed by scientists to be used on location without damaging the glass. It shines a beam onto the surface, which causes the material inside to radiate. This radiation contains a chemicalfingerprint, from which the researchers worked out its age. Weve been working on this Detective Story for some time, putting all the pieces in place, and then we finally get an answer, something new, that brings together Science And Art into one story. Its fantastic. These are all stories that were recorded at the time they happened here. The discovery has astonished leonie seliger, who looks after the Stained Glass Windows here. She believes that the Re Dated panels could go back to the mid 1100s, and were in place during great historical events at the cathedral, including the assassination of the then archbishop, thomas beckett, who features in many of these Windows. They would have witnessed the murder of thomas becket, they would have witnessed Henry Ii come on his knees, begging for forgiveness, they would have witnessed the conflagration of the fire that devoured the cathedral in 1174, and then they would have witnessed all of british history. The cathedral contains a story of englands history, its artistry and its religious thinking. Now, a new scientific discovery has given us a fresh perspective on the nations past. Pallab ghosh, Bbc News, canterbury cathedral. Vintage, pre loved, orSecond Hand whatever you call them, clothes that have had a previous owner are all the rage, largely due to concerns about sustainability. Now in whats thought to be a first in the uk a permanent Fashion Swap Shop for adults has opened in london. Swappers pay a Membership Fee to visit the store and to exchange items they no longer want. Jonelle awomoyi has more. Id spend about £300 a month on clothing. One day i had a girls night at my house, and the girls came around and we were like, lets go out instead of stay in. Everybody started moving things around my wardrobe, and i saw them all pulling things and swapping amongst themselves. I saw this happen and just thought, if i have all these things in my wardrobe and my friend has all these things in her wardrobe, it means we all have this problem where we have all of these clothes that we are not using that could go to Somebody Else. Montana has opened a shop that runs on the basis of swapping instead of paying for goods. Swappers, rather than shoppers, can trade in their unloved clothes for Second Hand garments. Swap nation is thought to be the uks first permanent Fashion Swap Shop for adults. So ive brought three items, 0k . So a mid tier next dress. You get a four overall for that. A celine blouse. It is a designer, which is eight tokens, and it is made out of silk, which is three, so overall it gets 13. A fast fashion top. It is made out of polyester, so youre only looking around two, three tokens for that. So four, seven, 13. Youve got 20. 20. And i can go across this whole shop and choose whatever id like . Take your time, browse, try them on, swap things in and out. Its up to you. Ive just grabbed a really amazing vintage top that if you were going to buy, it would easily be £60 to £70. I have been able to come here with three items that i dont wear and swap them. This is their first physical permanent store. As a long time fan, its really exciting for me. I wanted to be one of the first people through the doors today. Swapping fashion is a good way of keeping a circular economy and maintaining a very small but kind of personal styled wardrobe. You can still update it and things. Its been amazing. Sustainable fashion is becoming more and more popular. Swap nation is just one example of a company That Markets Second Hand clothing, saving clothes from landfill and giving them a new life. There are enough clothes on the planet currently to clothe the next six generations of the human race. 70 of the clothes we buy today are synthetic, so they are made from fossil fuels. Clothing has a huge transport cost. Most of our clothes are made 5,000, 6,000 miles away. Every piece of clothing we have costs the planet. So, according to patrick, we need to consume less. But does swapping have to end with fashion . You could easily swap a Lawn Mower and then swap that back to Somebody Else because youve used it. You could do that within your community. That could definitely work as a business. Jonelle awomoyi, Bbc News. Thats it for now. Lets catch up with some weather, just see how it is looking. A little return of the warmth, i think . Is looking. A little return of the warmth, ithink . What is looking. A little return of the warmth, i think . What has got the details. Tomasz has got. Well, its been a fairly quiet day today, but tomorrow, you might have to run for cover. Weve got the Big Rain Clouds on the way. Heavy showers are expected to form downpours in places, thunder and lightning, too, but they are showers. Discrete areas of Heavy Rain with plenty of bright weather around, too, so it wont be raining everywhere. This is the big picture across our part of the world. The Jet Stream to the south of us, that often means Cooler Air comes in out of the North Atlantic, so its pushed all the Warmth And Heat towards the south. Were in this Cooler Airstream, and its also a very unstable airstream, which means that shower clouds easily form when we get a bit of sunshine not, obviously, at night. Its dark, so clear weather across eastern areas, but a Weather Front is approaching western parts of the uk, so there will be some rain around early in the morning in Southwestern Parts of england, wales, too. And then, very quickly through the day, well see those rain clouds forming, bubbling up small cumulus clouds, and then bigger cumulonimbus clouds, all in the centre of this low pressure where the Winds are light. Light Winds is not a good thing necessarily because when these storms form, theres not much Wind to push them around, so they rain in the same place for a long period of time, dumping a lot of rainfall, causing flash floods, at least in places. But theres going to be plenty of bright weather around as well, its just going to be in between these rainstorms. You can see what a rash of showers it is going to be. Now, on wednesday, the low pressure moves a little bit further north, and notice the white arrows here theres more of a breeze to push the showers along, so the thinking is that any showers across more southern parts of the Uk Wont be as slow moving. Therell be some rain around, but Theyll Sort of be pushed along the Wind, whereas in northern England And Scotland in particular, they could be very heavy and thundery, and again, theres a risk of Flash Flooding in places. But i think in this sort of situation, the areas that fare best, usually around some coastal areas out towards the west and the south of the uk. Fairly cool in that airstream from the North Atlantic were talking about teens in the north, maybe 20 degrees in the south. And in this sort of weather, the apps will be changing a lot, the website, too. These symbols will update day by day as the computers plot new areas of where the showers will be forming. Bye bye.
