Theere was an unexpected Gold Medal Fortunisia in swimming and the first medals for team gb, with a silver in taekwondo and a bronze injudo. The Womens Road Race resulted in a huge Shock And Ash Barty Couldnt Replicate her wimbledon success. Lucy hockings is in tokyo for us. Day two here in tokyo has produced some extraordinary performances and some real upsets as well. The day started with a big upset in the Womens Road Cycling race the austrian Mathematician Anna Kiesenhofer took gold, she has not had a professional contract since 2017, she raced ahead of the peloton with more than a0 kilometres still remaining, it was an amazing race, and in fact she has a phd in maths from cambridge so very clearly made the right calculations in todays race, a great victory for austria and for anna kiesenhofer. And then we came to the swimming and the mens 400 metre freestyle gold, it was the outsider 18 year old tunisian swimmer Ahmed Hafnaoui pulling off a stunning victory in that race, he qualified with the slowest time, he was in the outside lane, went on to win, it was such an extraordinary moment, he was in shock and so was his coach when he finished the race. The bbc� s Africa Correspondent told me about what this means for tunisia and more about the swimming sensation. The fact that he has two tunisian coaches, Everybody Screaming and celebrating him, its just one half of the duo. He trains and lives in tunisia with his coach and so for him i think it meant a bit more because even for his coach he could see that in him. Its very difficult to get a lot of recognition, even a swimmer from europe, he is africas top swimmer currently. Thousands of people in the Western United States are spending the weekend in Evacuation Centres as wildfires continue to burn across the region. More than 80 large wildfires in 13 states have destroyed around 1. 3 million acres in recent weeks. Our North America Correspondent Peter Bowes reports. The dixie wildfire, californias biggest blaze to the north of the state, is growing rapidly. Firefighters are battling Day And Night to try to bring it under control, but its spreading with such ferocity that its making its own weather, creating huge clouds that are generating Lightning Strikes across the region. About a fifth of the fires perimeter has been contained, but officials say the extreme nature of the fire, along with low humidity, is hampering efforts to quell the flames. People have been evacuated from their homes in several nearby counties. Smoke from the fire is travelling far and wide and is even reaching the neighbouring state of oregon, where its helping firefighters put out the countrys largest blaze, known as the bootleg fire, south of portland. A layer of smoke is blocking sunlight and creating cooler conditions, making it easier for firefighters to gain ground on the blaze. But the phenomenon, known as smoke shading, is unpredictable and there are fears that high temperatures and wind gusts later in the weekend could fan the flames further. Efforts to bring this fire under control have been further complicated by an outbreak of covid 19 among firefighters. Those whove tested positive are isolating and are said to be exhibiting mild symptoms. A nine year Old Boy, a man and a woman died at the scene. Police said a seven year Old Boy was taken to hospital. This followed the death of a teenage boy also at Loch Lomond on friday. Those who run this stunning National Park said this has been one of the worst weekends in its history. Police scotland said the number of deaths is hard to comprehend and urged people to take care. As many of us have been enjoying the recent heatwave, one charity said more than 30 people have drowned in the uk in the last two weeks. Deep bodies of water rarely get above 18 degrees and if you compare that to a Swimming Pool where people learn to swim, which is normally regulated at around 30 degrees, we can see that there is a huge gap in Peoples Knowledge compared to swimming in the Swimming Pool and swimming in Deep Bodies of cold, open water. Also this weekend, in two separate incidents, an 11 year Old Boy drowned in South Lanarkshire and the body of a 13 year Old Boy was recovered from a river in lanark. The trend is continuing, and were seeing quite substantial reductions in Case Numbers over the last few days, and todays figures are about 40 lower than they were last sunday, which is roughly the same drop as we saw yesterday compared to the previous saturday as well, so it is looking very encouraging at the moment. Were not quite a week from Freedom Day, and youll want the two weeks presumably to give an accurate picture and what impact that may have had, if anything, on infection rates. Do these figures look manageable at the moment . Youre quite right. It wont be till friday at the earliest before we start seeing any impact of Freedom Day on the statistics but, even if Freedom Day does increase transmission, and its not absolutely certain that that will be the case because schools are closing, so that will reduce transmission, but clearly a lot of other venues are opening up, which potentially could increase transmission, but if we what were seeing at the moment is quite a substantial downward pressure already on Case Numbers then, come next week, when we start seeing the impact of Freedom Day, it might well be that were still seeing a fall, but thats optimistic and well really have to wait for a few days yet. Two Health Trusts in Northern Ireland have appealed for off Duty Staff to come into work as they deal with extreme pressure in hospitals. Mps have described as wholly inadequate the Complaints Process for women in the Armed Forces who are sexually assaulted or harassed at work. The Defence Select Committee found that 60 of female personnel had faced bullying, harassment and discrimination during their careers. The Ministry Of Defence says many improvements have been made, but admits Womens Experience Isnt yet equal to mens. Whats it like being a female soldier, im often asked. This is the armys latest recruitment campaign, aimed at women. Im the one stitching them up im not a miss or a mrs, im a sergeant. It suggests gender is not an issue in todays Armed Forces. But this report by mps paints a very different picture with women suffering disproportionately from bullying, harassment, discrimination and even Sexual Assault and rape. Six out of ten women in our evidence said that they dont make complaints because of fear of reprisals and repercussions. And what we are finding is that women are subsequently leaving the military before their time. Put some pressure on this for me. Women make up around 12 of the regular Armed Forces. The report highlights practical issues for them, such as not being given uniforms and Body Armour that fit. But mps say theyre gravely concerned that women are ten times more likely than men to experience sexual harassment. Youre asking for it, thats the impression you get, youre not completely blameless in all of this. Sophia, not her real name, was an officer in the Royal Navy when she was sexually harassed and then assaulted by her male boss. She left in 2017 after a five year career, successfully taking her complaint to a civilian court after she felt let down by her Chain Of Command. It was such an effort to have anyone hear me. And why do you think they didnt want to hear you . Its a boys club. They closed ranks. They wanted to make sure he was all right. They dont want it happening on their watch. Its bad press for them and it doesnt look good on their reports. Thats definitely the impression i got. The Ministry Of Defence said its made many changes to improve the experience of women in the Armed Forces. It said it profoundly regretted the experience of some. But mps want the Chain Of Command to be removed from complaints of a sexual nature and cases of rape to no longer be tried in a military court. Jonathan beale, Bbc News. In recent weeks, weve brought you a series of reports on how disabled people have been affected by the pandemic. One issue raised has been access to Healthca Re in line with patient Need And Delivery of that care to their individual circumstances. More than 1,500 disabled people told Bbc News they feared going into hospital. Hundreds said theyd avoid it at all costs. Our Disability News Correspondent Nikki Fox has been speaking to the Family of a man who was living with both Learning Disabilities and Brain Damage who, they say, had no voice to express his needs whilst in hospital, and sadly died in pain. My Uncle Derek was really childlike, he was a lovely man. He liked the simple things in life. He was my brother and i loved him. This is derek when he was younger. The 59 year old was taken to hospital after falling ill late last year. He was diagnosed with cancer, which the Family was told was treatable. While he was there, he caught covid and died. It went from him feeling unwell to being dead in such a short space of time. Becky cared for derek, but covid restrictions around visitors meant she could not be there for him when he needed her. The Family believe the treatment he received in hospital was different because derek had a learning disability. I told him i would be up soon. He believed me, with everything, and i let him down. Why do you feel you let him down . Because he didnt have a voice, he couldnt tell people what was wrong with him, and he could tell people through me, and i kept him safe. I didnt even have the chance to stand with him and tell them how he felt. I never spoke to one person that understood dereks needs, actually knew he had Learning Difficulties or Brain Damage. There was never anything in place. For someone like derek in hospital. Just before derek died, the Family said they were told a Do Not Resuscitate order was being placed on his medical records and that it was unlikely he would be given a ventilator. He died before there was a need for critical care. Becky saw him just before he passed. He was unconscious on the bed, naked, soiled himself, lying on the very part of his brain that was Brain Damaged and that was painfulfor him to lie on. Itjust broke my heart to see him, knowing that, even when hes unconscious, hes lying in pain, because we knew he couldnt lie on that side of his head. The hospital trust, walsall healthcare, said its investigating the Familys-complaint'>Familys Complaint and is extremely concerned about the issues raised. It said it is committed to improving the relationship between carers and Healthca Re professionals.
