Coming up in sport, more than one of the bigger shocks of the olympics so far as austrias Ana Kiesenhofer upsets the odds to win the womens cycling Road Race. Hello and welcome if youre watching in the uk or around the world. Its day two of the olympics, and the Sporting Action has brought us just the sort of Unpredictability And Excitement only these games can bring. An unexpected Gold Medalfor Tunisia in the pool and the first medals for Team Gb with a silver in taekwondo for Bradly Sinden and a Judo Bronze for chelsie giles. The womens Road Race resulted in a huge shock earlier in the day. Lucy hockings is in tokyo for us. Day two has produced some extraordinary performances and some real upsets as well. The day started with a big upset in the Womens Road Cycling race the austrian Mathematician Anna Kiesenhofer took gold, she has not had a professional contract since 2017, she raced ahead with more than a0 kilometres remaining, it was an amazing race, and in fact she has a phd in maths from cambridge so she made the right calculations and todays race, a great victory for austria and for anna kiesenhofer. And when it came to the swimming, the mens 400 metre freestyle gold, it was the outsider 18 year old tunisian swimmer Ahmed Hafnaoui pulling off a stunning victory in that race, he qualified in the slowest time, he was on the outside lane, he went on to win, it was such an extraordinary moment, he was in shock and so was his coach. Bbc s Africa Correspondent told us what this means for tunisia and more about the swimming sensation. The fact he has two tunisian coaches, Everybody Screaming and celebrating him, its one half of the duo. He trains and lives in tunisia with his coach and so for him i think it meant a bit more because even for his coach he could see that in him. Its very difficult to get a lot of recognition, even a swimmerfrom europe, he is africas top swimmer. The Womens Weightlifting events begin on monday and one of those going for gold will be Team Gb s emily campbell, she is already the european champion, she has a good chance at a medal, but there will be a lot of focus on this event because the games first Trans Athlete from New Zealand will also be competing. I spoke to Emily A short time ago, she is in the athletes village, and i started by asking her what it was like to be at the opening ceremony. It was such a moment to be able to step onto that stadium and see that flag waving high. Obviously, there was not a crowd in there but the energy we got from the dancers was fantastic and it made you feel like you were part of a really special olympic games. How are you feeling about competing against Laurel Hubbard . Everybody in this competition has stood by those rules, and i need to concentrate on myself and my performance. Weightlifting is a selfish sport, only you can lift the Bar And Nobody can help you. We are in a village full of thousands of fantastic athletes and we need to focus on everybody s Story And Journey and im looking forward to competing against all the other girls in that line up. So, what do you say when you hear scientists say that laurel has a biological advantage because she went through puberty as a man, her Bone And Muscle density is different . I dont make those decisions, im just here to compete as an athlete. Ijust have to give my best Performance And Hope that that rewards me with a nice placing. That was emily campbell, another great day, day two producing lots of upsets and plenty more to come from here in tokyo. And well have more on the olympics from the bbc Sports Centre later this hour. Thousands of people in the Western United States are spending the weekend in Evacuation Centers as wildfires continue to burn across the region. More than 80 large wildfires in 13 states have destroyed around 1. 3 million acres in recent weeks. Our north america correspondent, peter bowes, reports. The dixie wildfire, californias biggest blaze to the north of the state, is growing rapidly. Firefighters are battling Day And Night to try to bring it under control, but its spreading with such ferocity that its making its own weather, creating huge clouds that are generating Lightning Strikes across the region. About a fifth of the fires perimeter has been contained, but officials say the extreme nature of the fire, along with low humidity, is hampering efforts to quell the flames. People have been evacuated from their homes in several nearby counties. Smoke from the fire is travelling far and wide and is even reaching the neighbouring state of oregon, where its helping firefighters put out the countrys largest blaze, known as the bootleg fire, south of portland. A layer of smoke is blocking sunlight and creating cooler conditions, making it easier forfirefighters to gain ground on the blaze. But the phenomenon, known as smoke shading, is unpredictable and there are fears that high temperatures and wind gusts later in the weekend could fan the flames further. Efforts to bring this fire under control have been further complicated by an outbreak of covid 19 among firefighters. Those whove tested positive are isolating and are said to be exhibiting mild symptoms. With a long, hot summer still ahead, these fires will challenge much of the Western United States for many weeks to come. Peter bowes, Bbc News, los angeles. Out, bolsonaro the message in 20 states across brazil. As the Coronavirus Death Toll in the country passes half a million, protesters demand the resignation of the man they say is to blame president jair bolsonaro. Translation we allowed this person to become the president of the republic and we are seeing the consequences of that today in the absurd number of deaths due to the pandemic, due to the irresponsible way in which he handled the pandemic in brazil. The president has been famously dismissive of the Health Crisis opposing masks and social distancing measures and hes been criticised for the slow roll out of vaccines. Only 17 of the population is fully vaccinated. With a president ial election looming next year, mr bolsonaro s Approval Rating is at a record low and he faces investigation in the senate on charges of corruption. As night fell, skirmishes broke out between protesters and police. Explosion. Who fired Tear Gas and threw flash bangs. Explosion. Extreme caution is being advised for people considering swimming in lochs and rivers after several deaths in scotland in the last a8 hours. They include a nine year Old Boy and two adults who drowned at Loch Lomond. Another child is in hospital. Police scotland are warning that Open Water Swimming can be extremely dangerous with the risk of deep water and hidden currents. Alexandra mackenzie reports. An idyllic location. Loch lomond was busy as usual today with many enjoying the scorching weather. But Yesterday Evening it is believed two adults and two young children got into difficulty in the water near ardlui. A nine year Old Boy, a man and a woman died at the scene. Police said a seven year Old Boy was taken to hospital. This followed the death of a teenage boy also at Loch Lomond on friday. Those who run this stunning National Park said this has been one of the worst weekends in its history. Police scotland said the number of deaths is hard to comprehend and urged people to take care. As many of us have been enjoying the recent heatwave, one charity said more than 30 people have drowned in the uk in the last two weeks. Deep bodies of water rarely get above 18 degrees and if you compare that to a Swimming Pool where people learn to swim, which is normally regulated at around 30 degrees, we can see that there is a huge gap in Peoples Knowledge compared to swimming in the Swimming Pool and swimming in Deep Bodies of cold, open water. Also this weekend, in two separate incidents, an 11 year Old Boy drowned in South Lanarkshire and the body of a 13 year Old Boy was recovered from a river in lanark. Scotlands First Minister said it was heartbreaking. Alexandra mackenzie, Bbc News, Loch Lomond. The headlines on Bbc News. The Health Secretary Sajid Javid has apologised for and deleted a tweet in which he said the nation should stop cowering from coronavirus. Englands Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, has apologised for saying people shouldnt cower from the coronavirus, saying it was a poor choice of word. It had been used in a tweet since deleted which was criticised by Opposition Parties and bereaved familes. Meanwhile, ministers are considering requiring Football Fans to be fully vaccinated in order to attend Premier League matches. Ben wright reports. He has been Health Secretary forjust a month. Nice to meet you. My first visit to a hospital on thejob. But in a tweet announcing his own recovery from coronavirus yesterday, Sajid Javid said people should get vaccinated and learn to live with covid rather than cower from the virus. The rebuke from Opposition Parties and bereaved families was swift. Were very disappointed at yet another barbed comment from a minister of the government. We find that the comments are distasteful, disrespectful to our loss, and insensitive, quite frankly. Labour said Sajid Javid had insulted the many people still shielding from covid and trying to stay safe and, this morning, the Health Secretary deleted his original tweet and said he was wrong to say the word cower. But mrjavids bullish tone reflects a government pushing on with opening up england in the face of very high infections. About 70 of adults have now had both jabs and ministers want to put pressure on younger people to get vaccinated. Earlier this week, the Prime Minister announced that Vaccine Passports would be used at Night Clubs in england from The End of september and a similar plan is being considered for Premier League football matches as well, and talks between ministers and the league are at an early stage. I think our members are reflective of the wider society, so there will be some who feel that this will give them the kind of reassurance they need in order to return safely to games. Equally, there will be others who are opposed to it in principle. Some events, like this Weekends Latitude Music festival require test of vaccination for entry, but making that mandatory for other large scale indoor and outdoor events would be strongly opposed by some tory mps. The government has changed its tune on this, but now it is clear some freedoms will come with that condition. Ben wright, Bbc News. A reminder now that the number of daily coronavirus cases in the uk has fallen again for the fifth successive day. Overall, 29,173 new cases were reported across the uk in the last 2a hours and a further 28 deaths were recorded thats of people who tested positive for coronavirus in the past 28 days. A6. 5 Million people have now had at least one Vaccine Dose thats 88 of the adult uk population. A little earlier, my colleague spoke to Professor Paul Hunter about the data. He is a professor in medicine at the university of east anglia. He gave his reaction to the declining Case Numbers. The trend is continuing, and were seeing quite substantial reductions in Case Numbers over the last few days, and todays figures are about a0 lower than they were last sunday, which is roughly the same drop as we saw yesterday compared to the previous saturday as well, so it is looking very encouraging at the moment. Were not quite a week from Freedom Day, and youll want the two weeks presumably to give an accurate picture and what impact that may have had, if anything, on infection rates. Do these figures look manageable at the moment . Youre quite right. It wont be till friday at the earliest before we start seeing any impact of Freedom Day on the statistics but, even if Freedom Day does increase transmission, and its not absolutely certain that that will be the case because schools are closing, so that will reduce transmission, but clearly a lot of other venues are opening up, which potentially could increase transmission, but if we what were seeing at the moment is quite a substantial downward pressure already on Case Numbers then, come next week, when we start seeing the impact of Freedom Day, it might well be that were still seeing a fall, but thats optimistic and well really have to wait for a few days yet. Two Health Trusts in Northern Ireland have appealed for off Duty Staff to come into work as they deal with extreme pressure in hospitals. In a tweet, the Belfast Trust said both the mater and the royal victoria are caring for an increasing number of covid patients as well as emergency admissions. The South Eastern trust is also asking available staff to come in. Mps have described as wholly inadequate the Complaints Process for women in the Armed Forces who are sexually assaulted or harassed at work. The Defence Select Committee found that 60 of female personnel had faced bullying, harassment and discrimination during their careers. The Ministry Of Defence says many improvements have been made but admits Womens Experience Isnt yet equal to mens. Jonathan beale reports. Whats it like being a female soldier, im often asked. This is the armys latest recruitment campaign, aimed at women. Im the one stitching them up im not a miss or a mrs, im a sergeant. It suggests gender is not an issue in todays Armed Forces. But this report by mps paints a very different picture with women suffering disproportionately from bullying, harassment, discrimination and even Sexual Assault and rape. Six out of ten women in our evidence said that they dont make complaints because of fear of reprisals and repercussions. And what we are finding is that women are subsequently leaving the military before their time. Put some pressure on this for me. Women make up around 12 of the regular Armed Forces. The report highlights practical issues for them, such as not being given uniforms and Body Armour that fit. But mps say theyre gravely concerned that women are ten times more likely than men to experience sexual harassment. Youre asking for it, thats the impression you get, youre not completely blameless in all of this. Sophia, not her real name, was an officer in the Royal Navy when she was sexually harassed and then assaulted by her male boss. She left in 2017 after a five year career, successfully taking her complaint to a civilian court after she felt let down by her Chain Of Command. It was such an effort to have anyone hear me. And why do you think they didnt want to hear you . Its a boys club. They closed ranks. They wanted to make sure he was all right. They dont want it happening on their watch. Its bad press for them and it doesnt look good on their reports. Thats definitely the impression i got. The Ministry Of Defence said its made many changes to improve the experience of women in the Armed Forces. It said it profoundly regretted the experience of some. But mps want the Chain Of Command to be removed from complaints of a sexual nature and cases of rape to no longer be tried in a military court. Jonathan beale, Bbc News. Weve had a series of reports in recent weeks on how disabled people have been affected by the pandemic. One issue raised has been access to Health Care in line with Patient Need and responsive to their individual circumstances. More than 1,500 disabled people told Bbc News they felt worried about going into Hospital Hundreds said they would avoid it at all costs. Our disability news correspondent, nikki fox, has been speaking to the family of one man who wanted to highlight his experience in hospital. My Uncle Derek was really childlike, he was a lovely man. He liked the simple things in life. He was my brother and i loved him. This is derek when he was younger. The 59 year old was taken to hospital after falling ill late last year. He was diagnosed with cancer, which the family was told was treatable. While he was there, he caught covid and died. It went from him feeling unwell to being dead in such a short space of time. Becky cared for derek, but covid restrictions around visitors meant she could not be there for him when he needed her. The family believe the treatment he received in hospital was different because derek had a learning disability. I told him i would be up soon. He believed me, with everything, and i let him down. Why do you feel you let him down . Because he didnt have a voice, he couldnt tell people what was wrong with him, and he could tell people through me, and i kept him safe. I didnt even have the chance to stand with him and tell them how he felt. I never spoke to one person that understood dereks needs, actually knew he had Learning Difficulties or brain damage. There was never anything in place for someone like derek in hospital. Just before derek died, the family said they were told a Do Not Resuscitate order was being placed on his medical records and that it was unlikely he would be given a ventilator. He died before there was a need for critical care. Becky saw him just before he passed. He was unconscious on the bed, naked, soiled himself, lying on the very part of his brain that was brain damaged and that was painfulfor him to lie on. Itjust broke my heart to see him, knowing that, even when hes unconscious, hes lying in pain, because we knew he couldnt lie on that side of his head. The hospital trust, walsall healthcare, said its investigating the Familys Complaint and is extremely concerned about the issues raised. It said it is committed to improving the relationship between carers and healthca re professionals. Theres constant memories everywhere i look in the house, everywhere i go, every picture i look at, every day, every song i hear, every film i see. Sorry. The family say they will only be at peace when they find out why derek died the way he did. Nikki fox, Bbc News. Sorry. Now its time for a look at the weather with alina jenkins. Hello. Whilst its been a sunny sunday for some, for others, theres been torrential rain and thunderstorms. This is where theyve been developing through the afternoon through parts of east anglia, Down Into London and the Home Counties and towards the south coast, the red and yellow colours there indicating the frequent Lightning Strikes, and they will keep going for a time this evening before starting to pull away slowly south and east. Could just cling onto the far South East of england overnight. Elsewhere, mainly dry, mist and low cloud returning to northern and eastern coasts, also across Northern Ireland. Elsewhere, some clearer skies but, once again, its a muggy and mild night with Lows Ofjust 15 16 celsius in places. A fairly quiet start to the new week for many, dry with some Morning Sunshine once the mist and low cloud breaks, but thunderstorms never too far away, always hit and miss, not everyone will see them. In fact, where we dodge them and get the best of the sunshine, we could see highs of 25 26 celsius across parts of england and wales, but cooler for scotland and Northern Ireland. Further showers, though, in the week ahead, and feeling cooler both by day and by night. Hello, this is Bbc News. The headlines. Team gb have won their first medals at The End of the second day of action at the tokyo olympics. Chelsie giles took bronze in the Womens Judo before Bradly Sinden won silver in the mens taekwondo. The Health Secretary Sajid Javid has apologised for and deleted a tweet in which he said the nation should stop cowering from coronavirus. Campaigners for people whove died during the pandemic had condemned the remark as Deeply Insensitive and distasteful. British mps have warned that taxpayers will bear the cost of the Governments Coronavirus Spending for decades. A report found 372 Billion pounds has already been spent, pushing Government Debt to a rate not seen since the early 1960. Thousands of people in the Western United States, are spending the weekend in Evacuation Centers, as wildfires continue to burn across the region
