Wildfires in northern California Force thousands into evacuation centres, while a Covid Outbreak in oregon puts firefighters into quarantine. Hello and welcome if youre watching in the uk or around the world. Its day two of the olympics and the Sporting Action has brought us just the sort of Unpredictability And Excitement only these games can bring. An unexpected Gold Medal for tunisia in the pool, and the first medals for Team Gb, with a silver in taekwondo for Bradly Sinden and a Judo Bronze for chelsie giles. The Womens Road Race resulted in a huge shock earlier in the day. Lets cross to the bbc Sports Centre and speak to Austin Halewood whos been watching the action in tokyo. Lets start with the surprise, i mean we talked about cycling on day one. It is cycling again on day two. Absolutely. This was one of the big events of day two. It really was a brilliant race, but it was austrias Anna Kiesenhofer who was at the Shock Winner in the womens cycling Road Race after a remarkable break away from the very start of the race as well. She led for almost every metre of the 137 kilometres. She finished so far in front of the rest that a second Place Cycler of The Netherlands thought she had won the gold but was told on the line she had only one silver. And it was Anna Kiesenhofer, austrias first Gold Cycler Medal and 125 years. It is more remarkable in that she does not even have a professional team right now, but i am sure that will not be the case belong. Im now, but i am sure that will not be the case belong. The case belong. Im sure, with sponsorship the case belong. Im sure, with Sponsorship Deals the case belong. Im sure, with Sponsorship Deals and the case belong. Im sure, with Sponsorship Deals and all, the case belong. Im sure, with Sponsorship Deals and all, yes. I the case belong. Im sure, with Sponsorship Deals and all, yes. And a Sponsorship Deals and all, yes. fific a skateboarding . A Sponsorship Deals and all, yes. fific a skateboarding . A perfect Day Sponsorship deals and all, yes. Elic a skateboarding . A perfect day for japan. The organisers brought skateboarding into the game very first time in tokyo and it really did go to plan for them. There World Champion Yuto horigome won the Street Event not to far from where he grew up as a boy. So the organisers from the games and plenty of people injapan will have been delighted with how that went. And thatis delighted with how that went. And that is presumably what the Organising Committee will be hoping that the Newspapers Tomorrow will be full of good stories about sporting success, ratherthan full of good stories about sporting success, rather than more stories about what is about covid safety. And at the unhappiness of some people. Lets talk about the tennis. In a sense, the Womens Game during this olympics has been a reminder of how you can go from a World Class Excess and followed by defeat. The Ups And Downs of this professional sporting clear. She was beaten in the first round on sunday, most to the Spanish Tennis player and any favourite is out of the womens singles. The two time defending champion andy murray, Gold Medallist, of course in rio and in london, he has pulled out of the mains singles with a slight thigh strain. It does not sound too bad because he is going to continue in the mens doubles, but he said he had been advised not to do both events. fist had been advised not to do both events. . , had been advised not to do both events. . , , events. It is the second time Thatjon Rahm has tested positive within a few months. He was forced to pull out of ohio after being told he had tested positive. He did and then go on to win at the us open a few weeks later so all was right in the world for him then, but once again he has tested positive and had to pull out of another tournament. Both of these positive results were detected in a third Pcr Test following the British Open in kent in the uk last week. Neither had travelled to tokyo just yet. We know that the usa will replace Bryson Dechambeau with patrick reed. The show must go on. Thank you very much, austin reed. Lets get some reaction to Bradly Sindens when there. Our Correspondent Nestor Mcgregor has been getting reaction from bradly s mum in stainforth in south yorkshire. Up and down the uk, there are probably many, many homes that look like this one. But this garden is the garden that Bradly Sinden practised those Tae Kwon do moves that we saw earn him a silver olympic medal in a mens Tae Kwon do Under 68kg category. As you can see, there is bunting everywhere and his mum has also planted these amazing flowers which, as you can see, are white, red and blue, Team Gb colours. Now, if we just step across to my right, we will see some gold flowers because we were hoping for a Gold Medal. Sadly, bradly didnt get the gold, but its worth saying that this is a massive Tae Kwon do area. His mum, cheryl, who we are about to speak to has taken many, many children to their first Tae Kwon do lessons and did so for bradly when he was just four years old. Thank you, cheryl. Firstly, your reaction just moments after the fight . Obviously, we were gutted for brad. He wanted gold and didnt get the gold, but were immensely proud of him. Just cant believe hes done it, cant believe he has a medal at the olympics. Little brad coming from doncaster, done it again, doncaster, the best Tae Kwon do town in the uk. Absolutely. And a Silver Medal will back up those claims as well. Its worth saying you also have made amazing sacrifices to get bradly where he is. It might have been him alone in that match in tokyo. But tell us about the journey from a small child to now. He started when he was four years old, took him over to our local club a few miles away from here, kings Tae Kwon do. His coaches were Kelly Humphreys and martin baker. He was a handful,a real handful. Very overactive, but Tae Kwon do calmed him down. It gave him a sense of purpose, he absolutely loves doing it and he was just a natural. Absolutely. And it is worth saying, surely it is a house of celebration, who did you watch with, what where the emotions like . And your son is an olympic Silver Medallist. Watched with friends and family, my twin boys, my mum, my friend from down The Street who was actually responsible forjohdi starting Tae Kwon do and therefore, by default, bradly starting Tae Kwon do. My daughterjodie and her girlfriend libby, and then there is my friendsjo and shawnie. Jodie, joe and shawnie are all international referees. Welcome back. That was cheryl sinden talking to Nestor Mcgregor a little earlier, celebrating bradley sendings medal there. Disappointed he did not get gold, but a heck and achievement. Im sure they will be celebrating tonight, but receiving the main celebrations until he gets back, they can do it altogether. Lets move on from the olympics to some Domestic Uk news. Plans to require Football Fans to be fully vaccinated if they want to go to Premier League matches are being considered by the government. Its understood clubs in englands top flight are keen to become early adopters of proof of vaccination so they can keep full capacity crowds. Our political correspondent Helen Catt has the story. Football fans have already been part of testing ways to keep big events going when coronavirus is very much still here. The Fa Cup final at wembley was a pilot event. And this weekend, the government has also turned to football to try to boost uptake of the vaccine among young people with a message from the england manager. I know oldies like me have had both jabs so we can crack on with our lives. But for you younger ones especially with the chance for everything to open up. Concerns about the number of younger people still unvaccinated are also thought to be a driver behind the idea for Vaccine Passports for events. The government is in talks with the Premier League to use them at matches from october. Ministers want to make things equal between all sports so its likely other crowds would have to do the same. Earlier this week, the Prime Minister announced that Vaccine Passports would be needed to go to nightclubs in england from The End of september. I should serve notice now that, by The End of september, when all Over 185 will have had their chance to be double jabbed, were planning to make full vaccination the condition of entry to nightclubs and other venues where large crowds gather. Other Spectator Events with crowds of over 20,000 people, such as big concerts, are also likely to face similar requirements. Mps and fans groups have already raised concerns. At the start of the pandemic in 2020, questions were raised about the role the Cheltenham Festival may have played in spreading the virus. The government and Sports Bodies are likely to be keen to make sure they can have full capacity crowds this winter without such worries. Helen catt, bbc news. Britains Health Secretary has apologised for a poor choice of word when he said people should no longer cower from coronavirus. Sajid javid made the comment after tweeting hed made a full recovery from the virus. But he faced criticism from labour as well as some medical and familes groups who said it was insensitive to those whod suffered serious illness or lost their lives. Taxpayers in the uk will be facing the significant costs of the Coronavirus Pandemic for decades to come. Thats the warning from a group of mps. A report from the public Accounts Committee found £372 billion has already been spent, pushing Government Debt to a rate not seen since the early 1960s. Mps also criticised the decision to buy items of ppe that have gone to waste because they cant be used in hospitals. The Department Of Health says there are measures in place to ensure taxpayers receive value for money. Earlier, dame meg hillier, who chairs the house of commons public Accounts Committee told us how significant the financial risks are. Its not unexpected that we would be spending huge sums of money on an unprecedented pandemic, but there is a cost to managing that. And in the past decade, Weve Seen Cuts through the Austerity Programme because of the then governments desire to tackle some of the challenges in the public finances, and yet, thats going to be very difficult if the government takes that route. It could also raise taxation or it could borrow more, but all of these have risks and every pound spent on paying interest on borrowing is not a pound that can be spent on delivering public services, so its not a surprise that there will be a long term cost. And if you look at the second World War and the first World War, there were similar challenges then. They were the last two big, very big episodes in pushing government spending, Taxpayer Spending to very high levels. Mps have described as wholly inadequate the Complaints Process for women in the Armed Forces who are sexually assaulted or harassed at work. The Defence Select Committee found that 60 of female personnel had faced bullying, harassment and discrimination during their careers. The Ministry Of Defence says many improvements have been made, but admits Womens Experience Isnt yet equal to mens. Jonathan beale reports. Whats it like being a female soldier, im often asked. This is the armys latest recruitment campaign, aimed at women. Im the one stitching them up im not a miss or a mrs, im a sergeant. It suggests gender is not an issue in todays Armed Forces. But this report by mps paints a very different picture with women suffering disproportionately from bullying, harassment, discrimination and even Sexual Assault and rape. Six out of ten women in our evidence said that they dont make complaints because of fear of reprisals and repercussions. And what we are finding is that women are subsequently leaving the military before their time. Put some pressure on this for me. Women make up around 12 of the regular Armed Forces. The report highlights practical issues for them, such as not being given uniforms and Body Armour that fit. But mps say theyre gravely concerned that women are ten times more likely than men to experience sexual harassment. Youre asking for it, thats the impression you get, youre not completely blameless in all of this. Sophia, not her real name, was an officer in the Royal Navy when she was sexually harassed and then assaulted by her male boss. She left in 2017 after a five year career, successfully taking her complaint to a civilian court after she felt let down by her Chain Of Command. It was such an effort to have anyone hear me. And why do you think they didnt want to hear you . Its a boys club. They closed ranks. They wanted to make sure he was all right. They dont want it happening on their watch. Its bad press for them and it doesnt look good on their reports. Thats definitely the impression i got. The Ministry Of Defence said its made many changes to improve the experience of women in the Armed Forces. It said it profoundly regretted the experience of some. But mps want the Chain Of Command to be removed from complaints of a sexual nature and cases of rape to no longer be tried in a military court. Jonathan beale, bbc news. The headlines on bbc news. Team gb have won a first Silver Medal at the tokyo olympics, but Bradly Sinden narrowly missed out on becoming the first british male to win taekwondos top prize at a games. Theres been national and Family Triumph Forjapan injudo, as a Brother And Sister both win gold. Plans to require Football Fans to be fully vaccinated if they want to go to Premier League matches from october are being considered by the uk government. It is now 60 minutes past four. 16 minutes past four. The government has announced extra support for parts of the country, including the North East of england, in the battle against rising numbers of covid 19. Its due to recent data showing that nearly 30 of adults in newcastle for example, havent even had their firstjab. Among younger adults its almost half. In the whole of england, nearly 70 of the Adult Population has had both jabs which is why auhorities say theyre taking action. The bbc s Martin Forster reports. Injanuary, worried people queued up to be vaccinated and the limiting factor was how quickly the nhs could get hold of vaccines. Six months later, and its a very different story. The vaccines are there, the vaccinators are there, but the nhs is dealing with a far more sceptical audience. While the North East is seeing the highest rates of infection in the country, in newcastle, nearly three in ten adults remain completely unvaccinated. I guess theres a sense that perhaps were getting towards The End of the pandemic and i think thats probably playing into peoples minds as to, actually, do i still need the vaccine, then . Of course, no one told the virus that were coming to The End of the pandemic and thats why were seeing the numbers that were seeing and thats why were concerned that people come forward. So the nhs finds itself back under pressure, with around 500 covid patients in hospitals across the North East and cumbria. Though, at the moment, farfewer are in Intensive Care than in previous waves. So, the priority now is to getjabs in arms, particularly in teesside, but also here on tyneside. I mean, obviously, boris is saying that he wants the passport for the nightclubs. I was like, may as well get it. Im going to a few gigs later on in the Year And Ijust wouldnt feel right going to them without having myself. Vaccinated first. Like, it wouldnt feel safe. Why would you need to . Why would you risk your Kids Health . As everyone can already see, no ones dying. Wheres the missing people . Nowhere. Not one person in my full neighbourhood has passed away of coronavirus. Not one person. So, while the push to sell vaccines is showing some early success, theres still a long way to go to win hearts, minds and arms. Martin foster, bbc look north. Three people including a nine year old boy have died after getting into difficulty in Loch Lomond. Police were called to the Area Yesterday Evening following concerns for people in the water. The child, along with a 29 year old woman and a 41 year old man were pronounced dead at the scene, and a seven year old boy is in Intensive Care. The deaths come 48 hours after a 16 year old boy died in a separate part of Loch Lomond after getting into difficulty in the water. Joining me now is lee heard from the royal life saving society. This is terrible news. In one sense, i suppose we often hear about the deaths in lochs and rivers and so on at this time of year when the weather is particularly hot. Any sense, Isaac Posey you expect things to happen you suppose things to happen. But it is terrible when it is a fatality. When the uk are looking forward to one weather, we know there is going to be a tragedy around water during warm weather. This is now over 30 in the last 11 days that have lost their lives in Open Water across the uk and ireland. It has a devastating impact on the families, the communities and individuals in what are such a sudden way to lose somebody. The warm weather coupled with children breaking up from school, we have seen people want to get out, in a euphoric way, and unfortunately, we dont know many of the circumstances yet, individuals are looking to cool off, taking risks and not returning home at The End of the day. And not returning home at The End of the da. ~. And not returning home at The End of the da. ~. ,. ,. ,. , the day. What are we not doing when we bathe in the day. What are we not doing when we bathe in water like lochs, rivers i we bathe in water like lochs, rivers and so on that we would normally do when we get into the water off the coast . Because people generally seem to be quite aware of the risks of tides and any risk of being carried out and the risk of finding the water is a lot deeper than they were expecting, i guess these deaths are just people are not so aware of It Inland . , ,. , just people are not so aware of It Inland . , ,. ,. ,. , just people are not so aware of It Inland . , ,. ,. , inland . There are two inland . Suggest people are not so aware of it. There are two reasons i aware of it. There are two reasons we believe, the first one is a lack of supervision. There are more inland deaths every single year. Around 60 70 of people die in land rather than at the coast. People may consider the coast is a more dangerous environment, but a lot of people are more likely to go to a Lifeguard Beach where there are properly trained Lifeguard Services and the lifeguards have to rescue people, but they swim between a red and yellow flag so it has a relatively safe environment. When people are swimming in lochs, lakes and quarries, especially, they are large bodies of water, significantly deep, and the biggest challenge in addition we have is that the Water Temperature is significantly colder, even time of year when the Air Temperature feels warm. The water in deep bodies of water really gets above 18 celsius and if compare that to a Swimming Pool where people learn to swim, which is normally regulated at around 30 degrees, we can see there is a huge gap in Peoples Knowledge compared to swimming in the Swimming Pool and a deep bodies of open, Cold Water. What does it due to the body . It is not necessarily people diving in, the sudden shout, but the process of the sudden shout, but the process of the Body Adjusting . Sudden shock. I rely select . What is Going On . Around a5 65 of people never meant to be in the water so in those scenarios, we assess what is called something like Cold Water a shock people falling, had a gasp response. The body, physiologically, hyperventilate, which means people start to panic. A good piece of advice for people is if you feel overwhelmed any water or you fall in, please float on your back, lie on your back, keep your airway clear, put your arms and legs up like a starfish. We are buoyant anyway, but if we are in close it adds to the buoyancy. It allows peoples bodies to get used to the Water Temperature, giving them vital seconds to get right, think about getting to the side, or if they cant, call for help. Getting to the side, or if they cant, call for help. That is a very aood cant, call for help. That is a very good piece cant, call for help. That is a very good piece of cant, call for help. It were Going On, what is the mistake that they are making . Were Going On, what is the mistake that they are making . It goes to the roblem of that they are making . If Anybody L Problem of supervision. If anybody has not had prolonged or professional access to Open Water swimming,. We had a great growth and Open Water swimming in the uk, people are well trained, get used to Cold Water, have the equipment with them. If people are not used to being in those environments, our advice is they should not be Going On. There are bodies that make our bodies quickly get muscle fatigue, people think they can swim across a large body of water, they get half way across and that their body is affected by the Cold Water, affects the muscles and they do not have the strength, Skill Or Salmon egg to get back to a safe point. We often want to be around lochs and rivers and enjoy lakes anywhere in the uk, the lake district, scotland obviously with the lochs as well, and Northern Ireland who, what would be your best advice for people, particularly if they have families . £311 advice for people, particularly if they have families . Advice for people, particularly if they have families . Our advice would be there is nothing they have families . Our advice would be there is nothing better they have families . Our advice would be there is nothing better than be there is nothing better than well trained supervision. Up in the lakes and quite a few places across the uk, there are life guarded beaches, but also areas where you can go and try water sports. There has been a great rise in Aqua Park and though we realise they, the cross, they are not going up exponentially and if you go elsewhere there is nobody there, to secluded and want to rescue if you get into difficulty. Thank you so much. Lee heard of the royal life saving society. Fascinating, if somewhat depressing to talk about the subject but incredibly important. We keep reminding people about treating water with respect, really. We have some of the latest data we normally get at about this time on covid 19 figures. The uk reported 29,173 further cases of covid 19 today, a fall from 31,795 a day earlier, public Health England said. It said on twitter that data for the number of new deaths across Britain On Sunday was not yet available. We have some technical issues as well at The End of the week for processing deaths, i think, from wales. Bear in mind, the Death Figures are always slightly difficult because it is 28 days after getting up to 20 days after getting a covid positive Test Somebody dies and obviously making the connection is always the difficulty here. We have 46. 5 million people have received at the first dose of a vaccine and 37. 1 million who have received a second dose. We are heeding a little earlier that it varies from region to region, the northeast figure is not as good as a little earlier that it varies from region to region, the North East figures not as good as the nationalfigures. Lets talk North East figures not as good as the national figures. Lets talk to paul hunter, professor of medicine at the university of east anglia. It is good to speak to you again. But even if Freedom Day does increase a transmission, and it is not absolutely certain that it will be the case because schools are closing so that will reduce transmission, but clearly a lot of other venues are opening up, which potentially could increase transmission. But if what we are seeing at the moment is quite a substantial downward pressure already on Case Numbers, then come next week when we start seeing the impact of Freedom Day, it might well be that we are still seeing it full. I think that is optimistic. We will really have to wait will stop at the very least, we are not seeing that trajectory, that increase continuing. Is that fair to say . Absolutely. People got very nervous a few weeks ago when we saw, for a few days, 70 week on week increase. But actually, that high rate has dropped considerably since then. It was dropping and i think when the euro was finished in scotland, they saw decreases in Case Numbers and are now seeing following hospitalisation rates. I think we started seeing following cases at roughly the same time as after the euros finished as the scot said. Professor paul hunter, really good to speak to you. Thank you so much for your thoughts on those figures. Thank you very much. Right, to the olympics now and lets go back to austin. Hello, austin. There you are.
