Hello and welcome to bbc world news. Day two of the olympics in tokyo has brought us all what we have come to expect from the games. There were major shocks in the swimming pool, a World Record was broken, and for some big names their Olympic Dream has come to an end. And a couple of sports made their debut too. The bbc s Sarah Mulkerrins has been following the action so far on day 2. What a story we have had as we have seen the first Gold Medal given out in one of the four new spots here at the olympic games. Skateboarding took Centre Stage with the Street Event final for the men taking place and i can tell you that the Host Japan have one at with a 22 year old michael from tokyo, yuto horigome, winning gold in that. It sees the skateboarders make some runs and pull up some great picks and skills on rails and ramps and also steps. A wonderful win for the hostjapan. Wonderful win for the Host Japan. Also wonderful win for the hostjapan. Also a big win in the pool with a gold in the womens 400 metres individual medley. Also a great win for tunisia as 18 year old Ahmed Hafnaoui one goal, the first of the game and only their fifth in a live gig gold. The australian women then smashed the World Record to claim the victory in the file by 100m Freestyle and that is have also seen the surfing. 4x100 metres. In the tennis, the World Number one Ash Barty is out, remember she came in as wimbledon champion. Organisers have been forced to put in the extreme Heat Policy for that event which allows them to monitor the Health And Safety of the players in the court in the high temperatures in tokyo. Another news that we have had today as we do with cover 19 cases is that cases are linked to this game is now linked to 132 with ten more being announced today. Prior to his dreaded to japan we also had the news that the us Golfer Brightness Dechambeau has had to pull out the event because he was tested positive. Patrick reed will now take his place. Lets speak to jane dougall, who joins us from the bbc sport centre. Its not been a good session for Team Gb though has it. Devastation for the Double Olympic taekwondo Gold Medallistjadejones taekwondo Gold Medallist Jade Jones who suffered taekwondo Gold Medallistjadejones who suffered a shock first round defeat and she would not have the chance to become the first british woman to win three Gold Medals at three consecutive olympics. So a real, real upset for Team Gb. She real, real upset forTeam Gb. She was real, real upset for Team Gb. She was beaten by Kimia Alizadeh from the refugee olympic team and Kimia Alizadeh had Beatenjadejones Alizadeh had beaten Jade Jones previously. But missing out on gold is a huge blow forjadejones. It was widely expected she would at least get to the final and she looked stunned after this defeat. She could still win gold if Kimia Alizadeh ridges are final. More Bad News for Team Gb because Andy Murray, and other Gold Medallist, has had to pull out from the singles in the tennis after concerns about quad muscle. He was due to start his singles campaign today. That is after he won in the Doubles yesterday. He played pretty impressively, there was no sign of injury then. Just a few days ago Andy Murray said he was in with a chance at the singles however via a statement from Team Gb they said murray was really disappointed but had to take the advice of his ethical stuff. Had to take the advice of his ethicalstuff. It had to take the advice of his ethical stuff. It would not be participating in the singles but is still in the Doubles. She had planned to retire after this olympics but she hasnt said she might be persuaded to continue to the 2024 Paris Games after being tilted into considering it by her french coaches. Perhaps even more records for Simone Biles. Look at all germany in the gymnastics. Their gymnasts will be wearing full length bodysuits. The german Gymnastics Federation said that athletes were taking a stand against the sexualisation of the spot. This is very significant because you will remember what happened with the norwegian Beach Handbook Team who were fined for not wearing a Bikini Bottoms and the wearing full length shorts despite them saying they felt uncomfortable and it sexualise the athletes so very interesting and topical and coming up in the gymnastics later on today. Thousands of people in the Western United States, are spending the weekend in evacuation centers, are spending the weekend in evacuation centres, as wildfires continue to burn across the region. More than 80 large wildfires in 13 states have destroyed around 1. 3 million acres in recent weeks. Our North America Correspondent Peter Bowes reports. The dixie wildfire, californias biggest blaze, to the north of the state, is growing rapidly. Firefighters are battling Day And Night to try to bring it under control, but its with such ferocity that its making its own weather, creating huge clouds that are generating Lightning Strikes across the region. About a fifth of the fires perimeter has been contained, but officials say the extreme nature of the fire, along with low humidity, is hampering efforts to quell the flames. People have been evacuated from their homes in several nearby counties. Smoke from the fire is travelling far and wide and is even reaching the neighbouring state of oregon, where its helping firefighters put out the countrys largest blaze, known as the bootleg fire, south of portland. A layer of smoke is blocking sunlight and creating cooler conditions, making It Easierfor firefighters to gain ground on the blaze. But the phenomenon known as Smoke Shading is unpredictable and there are fears that high temperatures and wind gusts later in the weekend could fan the flames further. Efforts to bring this fire under control have been further complicated by an outbreak of covid 19 among firefighters. Those whove tested positive are isolating and are said to be exhibiting mild symptoms. With a long, hot summer still ahead, these fires will challenge much of the Western United States for many weeks to come. Peter bowes, Bbc News, los angeles. In hungary, thousands of people have marched through the streets of budapest, to mark what organisers say is the largest gay Pride Gathering in the countrys history. It comes after viktor orbans right Wing Government pushed through a law banning the Portrayal Or Promotion of Homosexual Or Transgender content to people under 18. Courtney bembridge reports. Thousands gathered in budapest to send a message of acceptance, unity and defiance. I think it is more important than ever to come out onto the streets and show that we are together, we are joined in this fight for the rights and the freedom for lg btqi people. The annual Parade On took on special significance this year after a controversial law was passed, making it illegal to depict Homosexuality And Gender reassignment to children. So that means, you know, books with gay characters in, it means advertising, it means Television Programmes with any kind of Portrayal Or Discussion of lgbt themes, is technically against the law. The government has billed it as an anti paedophile law, but these crowds say its a move designed to divide. Translation this is nothing more than a diversion that is trying to tear the country apart. I think its a provocation because of the elections. Translation the law is an outrage. We live in the 215t century when things like that shouldnt be happening. We arent in communist times, this is the eu where everybody should live freely. Organisers of the Pride Parade say its the largest ever held in hungary, and they hope it will send a strong message to prime minister viktor orban. There is fear that many lgbt people are now planning to leave the country if there is no change or no change of government next year. Many of hungarys Eu Partners are furious over the new law and the bloc has begun legal action, warning it will use all power is available to force hungry to repeal or change the law. Courtney bembridge, Bbc News. In cities across brazil thousands of protesters have taken to the streets for the fourth weekend in a row. Theyre calling for the Covid Vaccination Programme to be speeded up, and demanding the impeachment of president jair bolsonaro. Gail maclellan reports. Out, bolsonaro the message in 20 states across brazil. As the Coronavirus Death Toll in the country passes half a million, protesters demand the resignation of the man they say is to blame president ofjair bolsonaro. Translation we allowed this| person to become the president of the republic and we are seeing the consequences of that today in the absurd number of deaths due to the pandemic, due to the irresponsible way in which he handled the pandemic in brazil. The president has been famously dismissive of the Health Crisis opposing masks and social distancing measures, and hes been criticised for a slow rollout of vaccines. Only 17 of the population is fully vaccinated. With a president ial election looming next year, mr Bolsonaros Approval Rating is at a record low and he faces investigation in the senate on charges of corruption. Sirens wail. As night fell, skirmishes broke out between protesters and police. Explosion. Who fired Tear Gas and through flash bangs. Explosion. Such clashes are likely to persist, putting President Bolsonaro under increasing pressure as the pandemic continues to exact a devastating toll. Gail maclellan, Bbc News. Lets have a look at some of the stories making headlines in the uk more thunderstorms are expected to hit parts of Southern England today, with forecasters issuing a number of yellow weather warnings. On Saturday Lightning partially destroyed two properties in hampshire. Meanwhile, a number of Flood Warnings for areas around london. Six people, including at least three children, have been taken to hospital after a Fairground Ride collapsed in county antrim. The northern Ireland Ambulance service says it was called to the funfair in carrickfergus just before 6 00 last night. None of the injuries is thought to be life threatening. Taxpayers will be facing the significant costs of the Coronavirus Pandemic for decades to come, a group of mps has warned. A report from the public Accounts Committee says 372 Billion pounds has already been spent. Mps also criticised the Governments Procurement of items of ppe that have gone to waste because they cant be used in hospitals. The Department Of Health insists there are measures in place to ensure Taxpayer Money is well spent. Business leaders across england are calling for an end to Self Isolation rules for people who are fully vaccinated. It comes as the so called pingdemic continues to cause Staff Shortages for thousands of firms. People in england with the Nhs App on their smartphone are forced to self isolate if the app pings with a notification to say theyve come into contact with someone whos tested positive for coronavirus. But calls are growing for the government to rethink the Self Isolation rules, as Robert Coxwell reports. This Coffee Shop in West Hampstead in North London is thriving, while another round the corner is struggling because some of their staff are self isolating. There is this sort of wax and wane effect and i hope we love those guys, i hope they get on their feet. Its quite stressful thinking about it. The number of people being asked to self isolate reached a Record High in england last week. While the Bbc Crew were out filming this report, they met someone who had just been contacted by the nhs Test And Trace app. Ijust got pinged and, i havent been with anyone except for my daughter whos tested negative so i cant understand it and it seems to be really conflicting, you know . That the advice and actually what were excited to do are two different things. Now Londons Mayor has joined calls to change Self Isolation rules by adding his to a joint letter, calling on the prime Minister Boris Johnson to allow those who are fully vaccinated to return to work following a negative pcr test. Were asking the government to bring forward the date theyve announced of august 16, the date after which if youve had both jabs and youre pinged and youre a negative test, you can go back to work. Thats Something Staff at this restaurant in hove, on the South Coast of england, would welcome. They had to close for six days a few weeks ago. That had a massive knock on effect on the business financially and also mentally for a lot of people, the stress of having to isolate due to positive tests coming back to them. While rules on those required to self isolate in england will change on the 16th of august, british Business Groups say the next three weeks are crucial. All of a sudden youre having staff in to isolate, you have to close the business at different parts of the day or you have to close fully. This has a massive implication on whether or not youre going to see through your summer months and through to 2022. As it stands, though, the millions of phones of people in england will continue to ping until mid august. Robert coxwell, Bbc News. Youre watching bbc world news. The Headlines Australia have smashed the World Record to win gold in the womens 4 by 100 metres freestyle relay. Firefighters are facing ever bigger challenges as blazes spread across the north Western United States. Lets speak now to Sarah Stevenson, who represented Team Gb in taekwondo at the 2008 and 2012 olympics. Thanks very much for being with us. In the past two hours we have seen a shock defeat. Just doing slain a bit on that one. She is first seed, well number one, and of course Double Olympic champion but the person that she fought in the First Match was a very tough match. It was a false picture of a First Match because she was fighting against an athlete who now has Refugee Status so then she is put at the bottom of the list in terms of seed but this girl is a world medallist, she is also an olympic medallist in rio. She got a Bronze Medal in rio and the four times her and jade have actually competed together, she has beat jade three actually competed together, she has beatjade three times. Actually competed together, she has beat jade three times. That was a very, very tough first Match Stop for both of them. And it is just unfortunate that that happened for jade. You always want that First Match to be, you know, blowing the cobwebs off and when you are first seed, you normally get that but jade didnt get at this time. Totally buttered for her. And just hopefully, Ali Zadeh gets it and can go for the medal. How hopefully, Ali Zadeh gets it and can go for the medal. Go for the medal. How does that work . Will go for the medal. How does that work . Wau If Go for the medal. How does that work . Will if you go for the medal. How does that work . Will if you get go for the medal. How does that work . Will if you get beat by any of the finalists, you can fight them for the Bronze Medal. If the finalists, you can fight them for the Bronze Medal. The finalists, you can fight them for the Bronze Medal. If Ali Zadeh reaches the for the Bronze Medal. If Ali Zadeh reaches the final, for the Bronze Medal. If Ali Zadeh reaches the final, she for the Bronze Medal. If Ali Zadeh reaches the final, she was for the Bronze Medal. If Ali Zadeh reaches the final, she was going i for the Bronze Medal. If Ali Zadeh. Reaches the final, she was going to have to herself up and go for the Bronze Medal. She can do that but obviously is out of her hands right now until we see who gets the final alizadeh. It now until we see who gets the final alizadeh alizadeh. It will be nailbiting. I know you alizadeh. It will be nailbiting. I know you know alizadeh. It will be nailbiting. I know you know jade alizadeh. It will be nailbiting. I know you know jade well alizadeh. It will be nailbiting. I know you know jade well and alizadeh. It will be nailbiting. She knows i have been to the olympics and lost First Match. You know, ive been through a lot of ups and downs myself and i kinda feel like that she is a little sister, like taekwondo sister to me and she knows anything that she kind of goes through that i will understand and be there for her and i think that is really important. To have. As well, somebody who has been there and done that already, to hold your hand and let you know that it is going to be ok. Yeah, iwill. Yeah. At the moment there is not much to say because it is only going to go in one ear and out the other now so i will probably leave it for now and then give her a little message but right now i think it is best to just leave her be, see if that girl gets the final and if she does ill probably drop her a message and say right, get your head up, lets go now and get the Bronze Medal. Absolutely and give her that post i am sure she will be grateful for. Obviously every athlete at the olympics has had a really tough 18 months with Training Opportunities massively curtailed that i imagine in this sport it really needs that one on one action, you need to be able to spark, to have that competition. How has it impacted on her, do you think, and the conversations you have had on her training and her mental preparedness for this . Training and her mental Preparedness Forthis . I training and her mental preparedness for this . ~ ~ training and her mental preparedness for this . The same position. There has been hardly any competition for anybody. Ijust hardly any competition for anybody. I just think it hardly any competition for anybody. Ijust think it has been tough and i dont necessarily think this has affected jade as much as anyone else. I think she is very adaptable, we all are. And she has a great roommate in bianca as well so they have been able to train together fiercely, and they do go at it and they have rate matches themselves between themselves and they really push each other on. Ijust think it was a really tough match and im Sure Ifjade looks back on this match she might think she might want to do a little bit better, but it was just a very, very hard match. You know, for the First Match of the olympic games. I dont think it is anything more than that, really. Mi anything more than that, really. All right, Sarah Stevenson, great to talk to you. Thanks very much for being with us. Women in britains Armed Forces who are victims of bullying, harassment or Sexual Assault are being denied justice by a woefully inadequate military complaints process, according to a new report. The uks parliamentary Defence Committee found more than 60 of female veterans who took part in a survey had experienced discrimination or abuse during their careers. The Ministry Of Defence says many improvements have been made, but admits Womens Experience Isnt yet equal to mens. If out of ten women in our evidence said that they dont make complaints because of fear of reprisals and repercussions, and what we are finding is that women are subsequently leaving the ministry before their time and have this Complaint Or Allegation or incident that has happened in the military, is having a Legacy Effect and really been quite detrimental and impacting on the rest of their lives when they come out of the military and other actions. And are veterans. Environment ministers from more than fifty countries will meet with the president of the un climate Change Conference Emergency workers in Western India have been frantically trying to rescue around 50 people, feared trapped in a landslide, triggered by monsoon rains, in the state of maharashtra. Officials said the downpours over the past few days, have triggered severe flooding in many parts of the state, causing widespread devastation. Heres our South Asia regional editor, anbarasan ethirajan. The rains have subsided briefly in the Western Indian state of maharashtra, giving the officials an opportunity to deploy more Emergency Teams to look for survivors in these devastating floods, which triggered landslides and flooding in many rivers across the state. Dozens of people have been killed. In one particular village, in the district of raigad, their whole settlement is buried in a huge amount of debris after a hillside caved in. People there described within a matter of minutes, the whole settlement went under the mud. So dozens of people are feared and still trapped under the debris. The government has sent teams which they are now desperately trying to rescue the survivors there. Any of them, if theyre alive. But the number of debris is continuously going up in this particular state, and also the rivers are flooding because the torrential downpour has increased the Water Level in dams, so the authorities are forced to release water in the rivers. That has flooded many towns and villages. Photographs and videos on Social Media show how people have gone to the rooftops because of the flooding. The entire Ground Floor is flooded with water. The enormous damage that is staggering at a time we have been going through this pandemic, lockdowns, people are not having enough income. Now this has added to the misery of people in maharashtra and in the neighbouring state of goa which is a very famous tourist destination. Again, where the officials describe the worst flooding in the last four decades. Uk Army Bomb Disposal experts have safely detonated a World War ii Bomb Which was found during the construction of a new Housing Estate in east yorkshire. Its thought an Raf Lancaster Bomber ditched the bomb when it was attempting to crash land. Jake zuckerman reports. Explosion. Oooohhh 0h the moment a live World War ii bomb was detonated on the outskirts of goole. This was the device dug up by workers building a new Housing Estate in the town. Bomb disposal experts spent much of today preparing for the controlled explosion, and for motorists, it was the cause of much frustration. The m62, which passes right next to the site, was closed in both directions as police cordoned off the area. Meanwhile in goole, local people watched and waited and tried to find a good vantage point. Yeah, im meant to be inside watching something, but ive got my head down the road thinking, whats happening here, trying to catch a little glimpse of it all. Ive just snuck through the edge there onto the field to see if we could see it and its a good viewpoint. Spectators had to wait until 4 30, but when the moment finally came, it was dramatic. Explosion. Oooohh 0h yeah, its been a diversion from all the covid and everything, so yeah, its been exciting. Something quite different for goole, certainly put it on the map today. Jake zuckerman, Bbc Look north, goole. Thats it will stop next very much for watching. Good morning. The heatwave is now behind us. More unsettled conditions on the cards. Really, through the week ahead were looking at that gradual change to cooler conditions. Still some heavy showers around at times but also some spells of sunshine in between as well. We have had some fairly heavy downpours over recent hours. You can see on the satellite image, this area of cloud that has been moving its way up from the south has produced already a few heavy showers in the far south and some thunderstorms as well. As we head through the course of the day, be prepared for more thunderstorms across parts of southern and particularly south East England, if you do catch one there could be some localised Flooding And Potential for some disruption to travel as well. The zone likely to see the heaviest of Showers Today is across southEast England, east anglia, perhaps into the midlands as well. Elsewhere across the uk, a lot of dry, settled weather and the cloud will be breaking up through the day so long spells of sunshine. Not quite as warm as recent days but still temperatures in the north west, getting up to 25 and possibly 26 degrees. If you have got the showers down towards the south east, though, only going to be about 22 or 23 degrees. Again some torrential as we head into the evening hours and a Rumble Thunder into the evening. Most of the showers are easing somewhat through the course of tonight. Fairly cloudy, low Cloud Mist and murk in parts of Scotland And North East England as well. Temperatures overnight getting down to around temperatures overnight getting down to around 13 16 degrees. 13 16 degrees. As we head into monday, low pressure is still with us, just pushing its way further north into the north sea. Still some showers around on Monday But Different Areas i think will be seeing those showers and they will be fairly few and far between so can see sunshine through the day on monday. One or two heavy ones potentially thunderstorms popping up in parts of western england and wales, but a little bit warmer in the south because they will be more sunshine so temperatures generally between 21 and 25 degrees. Low pressure still not far away as we move through into tuesday as well, drifting its way north and then this frontal system works into parts of the uk. Western parts. That will bring us a fairly unsettled theme and that is really going to hold on through much of the week ahead stop plenty of showers, some of them heavy, especially in the North And West and perhaps something a little bit drier and brighter further south. Bye for now. This is Bbc News, the Headlines Australia has claimed their first games gold, breaking the World Record for the womens 300m freestyle team relay.
