Six years, six hours that was in the Mens Road Race and there might be a few bleary eyes in ecuador this morning, it must have been about 3am there when history was made for them and the country when its only second Gold Medal ever in the games. There must have been celebrations there, and a Roller Coaster of a Mens Road Race, after six hours in the saddle, we didnt know who was going to end it, Richard Carapaz Breaking Away in the last Half Hour crossing the line with his rivals out of sight. It is ecuador s first Gold Medal since 19 96. It is his third he was known as the locomotive, he won the Tour De France just a few weeks ago. Geraint thomas had problems, earlier the second olympics in a row for Him Endedin Second Olympics in a row for him ended in despair because he was involved in a crash with his british Team Mate, teo geoghegan hart, who basically lost control of his Front Wheel, went down and there was no way Geraint Thomas could avoid going down as well. They were bruised, they dusted themselves down and got back into the saddle, but it was a little time later that thomas realise his race was over once again and he withdrew, a sad figure, cycling back to the start all alone to the hq and afterwards he did tweet, i must have done something wrong in a previous life. Eight Week Crash as for the sprint to the line fully Bronze And Silver medals, this was so exciting. Britains Adam Yates made a bold with about 100 metres to go, but then he said he got cramp in his legs, not surprising after what they did with the Heat And Humidity in the mountains, who so he slipped back to ninth and in The End of this Photo Finish was quite extraordinary. And she may have lost the final to kosovos athlete, but her silver will be celebrated. She is 25 and also won silver at another competition earlier this year. Those two medals forjapan, gold and silver, in the judo, really some comfort for the king of gymnastics as well, when the stories today, king kohei uchimura, who fell off the bar earlier on, failing to qualify for the gymnastics final, making up for that disappointment with a brilliant silver is, though, and there what a brilliant gold for kosovo in that final as well. She escaped from war torn syria, which really affected her childhood, but was given hope through sport. Just getting to these olympics was worthy of a Gold Medal really because of what she has been through. She did lose in the first round in straight sets to Liu Jia of austria. Liu xia said she had maternal feelings because she has a ten year old daughter herself who had a selfie with Hend Zaza. Afterwards Liu Jia said it was had a selfie with Hend Zaza. Afterwards liujia said it was more about the Human Side of things in sport and she said that Hend Zaza was a great expression of the central message of sport, to realise that whatever happens in your life you can use sport to conquer all. As we have been reporting even last night, as the Opening Ceremony was taking place, there were some protesters, but also outside the Olympic Stadium we saw quite a lot of people gathering to watch the Opening Ceremony from outside and even this morning the long queue of people waiting for their turn to take a picture with the olympic rings, so i think it is fair to say that some people are definitely getting excited and as mike and you were just talking about, japan winning Theirfirst Gold were just talking about, japan winning their first Gold Medal and also a Silver Medal that Funa Tonaki won in the Womens Judo in 48 kilograms, which was according to the japanese olympic Committee Japan is 500 Medal Injapanese olympic history, and we are also watching anotherjapanese athlete, who was diagnosed with leukaemia two years ago, but has managed to qualify for the swimming here and she is having her first the swimming here and she is having herfirst Swimming Race the swimming here and she is having her first Swimming Race this evening and lets not forget japanese football, which really supported the country after the 2011 tsunami, winning back then, and they are going to be up against team gb, so a lot of excitement around that as well. ,. , lot of excitement around that as well. , u,. , ~ lot of excitement around that as well. , , lot of excitement around that as well. ,. ,. , well. Of course, we continue to see a Growing Number of confirmed covid cases, not just within the olympic village, but also in tokyo, so they are still concerned and those protesters would argue this become a Super Spreader event, so those opinions are still here. It has been a very emotional, polarised debate, whether the games should even go ahead, but i think Government Officials have been hoping that once japanese Athlete Start winning medals, as we saw this evening, peoples sentiments and opinions may start to change. More workers in england will now be able to avoid Self Isolation if theyre contacted by Nhs Test and trace or pinged by the covid app. A Government Scheme which had just been for Supermarket Depots and Food Manufacturers is now being extended to include front Line Emergency services and some transport workers. The scheme was due to start yesterday, but has been delayed until at least monday. Tony sophoclides is from ukhospitality, the Trade Group representing the hotels and hospitality sector. What do you make of this scheme and the delay, tony . What do you make of this scheme and the delay. Tony . The delay, tony . Well, the scheme in itself is good the delay, tony . Well, the scheme in itself is good news the delay, tony . Well, the scheme in itself is good news in the delay, tony . Well, the scheme in itself is good news in terms the delay, tony . Well, the scheme in itself is good news in terms of itself is good news in terms of getting the early parts of the Supply Chain moving because they are of course crucial to the rest of the Supply Chain. It is, you know, disappointing that hospitality, by and large, has been excluded from the exemption list. The delay is slightly baffling and, you know, when we are talking about something as important as the food supply, obviously that decision cannot have been taken lightly, but i am not aware of the reasons for that delay. I mean, we have seen images of some Supermarket Shelves running low on certain items, but is the effectively the Supply Chain and isolating within that and the food depots, affecting hospitality at all or not . , ,. ,. , or not . Yes, it is starting to. In fact, it is or not . Yes, it is starting to. In fact, it is not or not . Yes, it is starting to. In fact, it is notjust, or not . Yes, it is starting to. In fact, it is notjust, even or not . Yes, it is starting to. In fact, it is notjust, even a or not . Yes, it is starting to. In| fact, it is notjust, even a couple of weeks ago we saw early signs of this, but that was more down to Driver Shortages and this is partly, the exemptions are partly to alleviate that, so we are seeing it there and we are on the latest sides of the last stages of the Supply Chain, but it is already starting to bite pretty heavily into a sector Thatis Bite pretty heavily into a sector that is onlyjust trying to get back on its feet after 16 Months of little or no trading, so it is a pretty critical situation for most of our Venues. Pretty critical situation for most of our Venues. . ,. , of our Venues. And how much is the Hos Itali of our Venues. And how much is the hospitality is of our Venues. And how much is the hospitality is sector of our Venues. And how much is the hospitality is sector pinning of our Venues. And how much is the hospitality is sector pinning its hospitality is sector pinning its hopes on the 16th of august, when more widely people will be able to, evenif more widely people will be able to, even if they are pinged, go through Daily Testing rather than isolating for as long as ten days . Daily testing rather than isolating for as long as ten days . Well, that will help to for as long as ten days . Well, that will help to some for as long as ten days . Well, that will help to some extent, for as long as ten days . Well, that will help to some extent, but for as long as ten days . Well, that will help to some extent, but you | will help to some extent, but you must bear in mind the fact that hospitality s workforce. We have 58 or nearly 60 of our workforces under the age of 35 and the majority of that cohort are under the age of 25, so they will not have been double vaccinated or had the chance to be, so we are looking at increased closures of Venues and, you know, the inability to trade and to start to try to build up some revenue in order to pay off the debts that have accrued over the last 16 Months. find debts that have accrued over the last 16 Months. Debts that have accrued over the last 16 Months. And ust give us a sense of last 16 Months. And ust give us a of the h last 16 Months. And just give us a sense of the pressures last 16 Months. And just give us a sense of the pressures that last 16 Months. And just give us a sense of the pressures that those J Sense of the pressures that those businesses are under . Because the Flip Side of it is that the risk is that if you allow people to go back into the workplace and not isolate, they could potentially spread the virus to others and you lose even more workers from your available pool more workers from your available ool. ,. , more workers from your available ool, ,. , , more workers from your available pool. Absolutely, listen, The Public Health Objective pool. Absolutely, listen, The Public Health Objective remains pool. Absolutely, listen, The Public. Health objective remains everybodys top priority and we cannot afford to lose our staff and our customers through illness. That is certainly the case, but i think that what would be an elegant solution at the moment would be to, if anybody is double vaccinated, if they are pinged and do a test and are negative, they are allowed to work all those that have not been double vaccinated, they managed to do one test and get a negative when they are pinged and then a couple of days later, test and release, essentially. That would really help. 0k. Essentially. That would really help. Ok. Tony sophoclides are from ukhospitality, many thanks indeed. Lets talk to Linda Bauld, professor of Public Health at the university of edinburgh. From a public Health Point of view, linda, this series of exemptions being widened. How much of a risk does it pose, if any at all . Being widened. How much of a risk does it pose, if any at all . Does it pose, if any at all . Well, i think policymakers does it pose, if any at all . Well, i think policymakers are does it pose, if any at all . Well, i think policymakers are weighing l does it pose, if any at all . Well, i l think policymakers are weighing up different harms and given the level of infection in the community at the moment, clearly having over 6000 people in england pinged in the last week is very, very disruptive, with the covid 19 app. So the Business Concerns are absolutely real and i think there needs to be a solution and if you look Around The World and other countries that are doing well in their vaccine programmes, singapore, for example, they are also moving to a system of not requiring Self Isolation for people who have had both doses of vaccine. But i guess the question is, why is it not being expanded instantly . I know you have been cuddling out on the programme. There are a couple of public Health Reason for that and also practical reasons. The public Health Reasons our vaccines do not prevent transmission. We know that. We have good data On Transmission yet, but we know people who have been vaccinated can still pick up the virus and still pass it on and some of them will still become unwell, if not severely, so you really want to try to reduce that risk, particularly at the current time. Practically, testing, as your previous contributor was saying, is absolutely key, and i think there are concerns about whether particularly for pcr there are enough places and capacity in the system to make that available so people can be tested, instead of having to self isolate when they are a contact. Having to selfisolate when they are a contact. ,. , a contact. Linda, the other thing that strikes a contact. Linda, the other thing that strikes me a contact. Linda, the other thing that strikes me is a contact. Linda, the other thing that strikes me is that a contact. Linda, the other thing that strikes me is that the that strikes me is that the relaxation of the isolation requirements, the Self Isolation requirements, the Self Isolation requirements if pinged or contacted ljy requirements if pinged or contacted by Nhs Test and trace for those who are double vaccinated Is Due To, and on the 16th of august. That is in the middle of the School Summer holidays, a lot of people have been travelling, will be returning perhaps from foreign travel around then. How much are they . Or uncertainty does that create her and perhaps other variants being brought back the risks at that poses . Weill. Back the risks at that poses . Well, it is certainly back the risks at that poses . Well, it is certainly not back the risks at that poses . Well, it is certainly not without back the risks at that poses . Well, it is certainly not without risk. Back the risks at that poses . Well, it is certainly not without risk. I it is certainly not without risk. I think the system now is better than it was, for example, last year, as in the checks and balances out there, people have to be tested, there, people have to be tested, there is more documentation. They have to provide, etc. But there certainly are risks. If you look early in the pandemic, we know there were genomic studies done in scotland and wales, for example, that we receded the virus back into the country last summer through international travel and we all know through what has happened with the Delta Variant and the big debate about restrictions on people coming from india, so lets recognise that thatis from india, so lets recognise that that is a risk. I think the one thing that everybody globally wants to avoid is a variant which generally challenges our vaccines. We havent had one yet, but it is certainly not impossible that would happen in the future. But i guess the final point for me on that is that we do have to find a way to continue to minimise risk, but also gradually move back to not living with lots of restrictions because you cant do that indefinitely. It is just a really, you cant do that indefinitely. It isjust a really, really you cant do that indefinitely. It is just a really, really challenging period at the moment. Isjust a really, really challenging period at the moment. Isjust a really, really challenging period at the moment. Linda, we have seen a lot of period at the moment. Linda, we have seen a lot of perhaps period at the moment. Linda, we have seen a lot of perhaps mixed, seen a lot of perhaps mixed, confused messaging around the obligation, the duty to self isolate if pinged. How much of an effect has that had, do you think, on the Public Health of things . On Peoples Willingness to follow that instruction if they get it . I think behaviourally, instruction if they get it . I think behaviourally, it instruction if they get it . I think behaviourally, it has instruction if they get it . I think behaviourally, it has had instruction if they get it . I think behaviourally, it has had an instruction if they get it . I think behaviourally, it has had an impact. I have not seen a lot of high quality data from, for example, from surveys on this, but what we know, the bare facts are that people are deleting the app. Even here in scotland, we have seen quite a big reduction over the last week or so and i think you have had some high profile public figure saying to people to delete the app, but what i would say again from a public Health Point of view is the key cornerstone of this is if you test positive you must still self isolate. We have done that over the decades for many different conditions that are infectious. If you are a contact, we need another model, but there certainly is in the population going to be people who just wont be bothering any more and, as i say, when we have got cases still rising in many parts of the country, that is obviously of concern to me and my colleagues. Is obviously of concern to me and my collea. Ues. , is obviously of concern to me and my colleagues colleagues. Ok, linda, thanks very much for sharing colleagues. Ok, linda, thanks very much for sharing your colleagues. Ok, linda, thanks very much for sharing your thoughts colleagues. Ok, linda, thanks very| much for sharing your thoughts with us. Professor Linda Bauld from the university of edinburgh, thank you. The planned lifting of coronavirus Restrictions Injersey has been put back until at least september, due to the rising number of covid cases. The opening of nightclubs and staging of big events has also been put on hold although people who are isolating can now leave their home for up to two hours to exercise outdoors. Several people have been arrested in sydney as thousands of anti lockdown protesters breached covid 19 restrictions in the centre of australias biggest city. Thousands joined the protests after authorities suggested covid 19 restrictions could remain in place until october. A number of them clashed with the police and were arrested. Demonstrations have also taken place in melbourne and brisbane. 14 Million australians are under strict stay at home orders as the authorities struggle to contain a surge in Delta Variant infections. Phil mercer has more from sydney. Police minister david elliot, he has described about 3,500 protesters here in sydney as Selfish Boofheads thats an australian colloquialism for idiots and i think many australians will agree with his sentiments. Health officials say that the actions of these protesters could well cost lives and senior Police Officers say the consequences could be catastrophic, given that only about 15 of australians are fully vaccinated against covid 19. The authorities here are livid at the behaviour of these individuals. And of course, when you think more broadly about the lockdowns, notjust here in sydney and the surrounding areas, but also in the state of Victoria And South australia, clearly no one or very few people are happy being in lockdown. People are questioning the Governments Approach to this, especially vaccinations, but i suspect that the vast majority of australians trying to do the right thing. Yes, clearly they dont like the lockdowns and they will be looking at the actions of these protesters and thinking, what were they doing . We dont know yet, but the indications are that certainly sydneys Delta Variant crisis is getting worse. Today, weve had 163 new infections reported in the past 24 hours. That is a new Daily Record for this city thats been in lockdown now for a month. It is notjust The City Of Sydney and its 5 Million residents, also regions up to the north, South And West and also the entire state of Victoria And South australia too, so the situation is far worse here in sydney than it is anywhere else. The lockdown Is Due To end on friday, but no one is really thinking that will happen. How long it is extended for, no one really knows. There is speculation it could well be Months rather than weeks and No Doubt that has fuelled these protests today. But as i say, most australians are pretty compliant. They know the score, they know they have to stay home and do the right thing, but the authorities are setting up a special Task Force of detectives to investigate those people who are demonstrating here in sydney and in two other cities. Phil mercer there in sydney. President biden has warned that the united states is facing a pandemic of the unvaccinated, as the Delta Variant of Coronavirus Spreads rapidly in areas where the Uptake Ofjabs has been low. Speaking in virginia, Mr Biden praised the governor of Alabama Kay Ivey who said it was time to start blaming the unvaccinated for the rise in infections. Heres our north america correspondent, david willis. With less than 34 of its population fully vaccinated, alabama is the least vaccinated state in this country. And thursdays remarks by its republican governor were well received by the white house. They are supposed to have common sense. But it is time to start blaming the unvaccinated folks, not the regular folks because its the unvaccinated folks that are letting us down. In a speech, President Biden echoed governor kay ivey s assertion that the recent rise in covid 19 cases was the fault of those who have refused to get vaccinated. What we have now is a pandemic of the unvaccinated. Here is the point. First of all, the covid 19 deaths and Hospitalisations Today are among the unvaccinated people. And i know, i know this has gotten a bit politicised but i hope it is starting to change. A Growing Number of republicans and conservative leaders have called on people to get vaccinated in recent days following nearly a three fold increase in coronavirus cases in the last two weeks. Most of them involving people who have not been vaccinated. 56 of americans, including children, have now received at least one jab, but a new poll suggests that the majority of those who are yet to be vaccinated still say they are unlikely to do so. David willis, bbc news, los angeles. Police in manchester say theyre extremely concerned about the welfare of a missing 11 year old girl from bolton. They are not suggesting this couple have anything to do with her disappearance. They just think that fatuma might have given them some indication of where she was going and what her plans are.
