Police make arrests in sydney as thousands of anti lockdown protesters breach covid 19 restrictions in australias biggest city. A warm welcome to tokyo, where the first Gold Medals of the Tokyo Olympics have been awarded. 11 medals are up for grabs on the first full day of action, including in fencing, judo and weightlifting. But perhaps the most eagerly awaited event of the day was the Mens Road Cycling race. Lets cross to the bbc Sports Centre and speak to our sports reporter, mike bushell, whos been watching the action in tokyo. Mike, the Road Race. Gruelling at the best of times, but i have to tell you in this heat it must have been so challenging. And Richard Carapaz, it was a fantastic race for him, winning gold. figs carapaz, it was a fantastic race for him, winning gold. Carapaz, it was a fantastic race for him, winning gold. As you said, what drama i think him, winning gold. As you said, what drama i think we him, winning gold. As you said, what drama i think we all him, winning gold. As you said, what drama i think we all needed him, winning gold. As you said, what drama i think we all needed to him, winning gold. As you said, what drama i think we all needed to lie i drama i think we all needed to lie down after that race. Over six hours in the saddle in that gruelling heat, up and down the mountain passes. Relentless, people comparing it to a Boxing Match that went all the way and some of the fight is literally on the floor by The End of it, but it also showed us the Joy And Despair that sport can bring, contrasting emotions. As you say, only the second Gold Medal ever for ecuador, but olympic heartbreak yet again for Britains Grant thomas. In The End it was Richard Carapaz who broke away, bravely, with about six kilometres to go, to hold on and cross the line with his rivals Out Of Sight so far behind. It was ecuador s first Gold Medal since 1966. He is known as the locomotive and was third just last week in the Tour De France, so he has real pedigree. He is a Team Mate of Geraint Thomas in ineos. And Geraint Thomas saw his brace broken by a crash. Fellow Brit Couldnt Avoid going into the tarmac and both of them fell it onto the floor and although they picked themselves up and dusted down the bruises, thomas and dusted down the bruises, thomas a couple of hours later had to pull out. His olympic games dreams were over once more and he did tweet, actually i must have done something bad in a previous life. Freak crash. As for other medals, britains Adam Yates had led a sprint for the line before he says cramp set into his legs, got the better of him and he had to settle for ninth. A Belgian Cyclist won silver by literally a Tyre Width against the bronze medallist, to put slovenia on the Medals Table again. Medallist, to put slovenia on the Medals Table again. Yes, that was uuite a Medals Table again. Yes, that was quite a moment Medals Table again. Yes, that was quite a moment for Medals Table again. Yes, that was quite a moment for silver Medals Table again. Yes, that was quite a moment for silver with Medals Table again. Yes, that was quite a moment for silver with the Photo Finish there at The End. I have to tell you here injapan a lot of the diligence were tuned to the gymnastics, but it was a sad end in The End for the gymnast known as the King Kohei Uchimura here injapan. No, the olympics can be a cruel mistress. Fate was decided by the finest of margins, especially in gymnastics, even if you are a defending champion. An absolute legend in the sport, japans most popular icon, King Kohei Uchimura, known as the king because he became the first man in 44 years to win back to back all olympic medals in rio, but after a back to back all olympic medals in rio, but afterajaw dropping back to back all olympic medals in rio, but after a jaw dropping series of somersaults, which was amazing to watch, he couldnt hold on. Itjust went out of his fingertips to the horizontal bar, which meant he fell into The Pit and so the reigning Olympic Champion had failed to qualify for a Gymnastics Apparatus final, ending the storied olympic career and he has already said he will retire after these games, but we must remember what he has done in the sport up until this moment. Absolutely, mike, and of course we follow some of the individual performances very closely here at the games. One of them is the youngest competitor here, the young syrian girl, hend zaza. She was in the table tennis today, how did she do . ,. ,. , do . There were tears at The End, not ust from do . There were tears at The End, not just from the do . There were tears at The End, not just from the youngest do . There were tears at The End, not just from the youngest athlete do . There were tears at The End, not just from the youngest athlete at just from the youngest athlete at these olympics, but from those watching as well because it was pretty heartbreaking to see, but you have to remember what an achievement 12 year old hend zaza, the young table tennis star, her story incredible, coming from war torn syria, but given they hope to a sport, it is worth to say, worthy of getting this far. She won in straight sets to Liu Jia of austria, and went up to her opponent at The End, offering a hug. Hend Liu Jia said she had mixed feelings because she herself has a 12 year old daughter, she says it was less about sport, this, add more about the human side. Was less about sport, this, add more about the human side. Mike, great to see ou about the human side. Mike, great to see you and about the human side. Mike, great to see you and thank about the human side. Mike, great to see you and thank much. About the human side. Mike, great to see you and thank much. Lets about the human side. Mike, great to see you and thank much. Letsjust i see you and thank much. Lets just give you a sense of the atmosphere here in tokyo. How people are feeling. Rememberthere atmosphere here in tokyo. How people are feeling. Remember there have been protests here in real opposition to how these games are taking place. Mariko oi is in the Shopping District of ginzo for us. So the medals are starting to be awarded and we see some of those individual Stories Ofjoy and individual stories of Joy And Despair starting individual stories ofJoy And Despair starting to filter through. Is that changing, do you think, the Environment And Atmosphere here in tokyo, in which these games are taking place . I tokyo, in which these games are taking place . Taking place . I think that is definitely taking place . I think that is definitely the taking place . I think that is definitely the hope taking place . I think that is definitely the hope with taking place . I think that isj definitely the hope with the officials, as well as japanese politicians have, that the power of sport would unite the country, that people would start to cheer the athletes and i have to say we have been glued to the television and i will phone all evening, watching judo because we now have Bothjudo Japanese athletes winning medals, so it is just a matter of Gold Or Silver so we should know in about half an hours time about the Women Studio and shortly after the mens 56 kilograms as well, but as you said in a gymnastics it was a bit of a disappointment, but also waiting for swimming, where there Athlete Blair was diagnosed with leukaemia two years ago. They surprised many people by being able to qualify for the other picks this year and she is going to have herfirst race tonight. Going to have her first race toniaht. ~ ~. , tonight. Mariko oi, mike and i were Ust Talkin tonight. Mariko oi, mike and i were jUst Talking about tonight. Mariko oi, mike and i were jUst Talking about the tonight. It really was extraordinary to watch over the six hours because so many people showed up to support the race. Is that because it is one of the only events they feel they can get out and see . Get out and see . Well, that is robabl get out and see . Well, that is probably part get out and see . Well, that is probably part of get out and see . Well, that is probably part of it, get out and see . Well, that is probably part of it, but get out and see . Well, that is probably part of it, but I Get Out and see . Well, that is probably part of it, but i think| get out and see . Well, that is i probably part of it, but i think it is fair to say the opinions have been so divided it has been a very emotional, polarised debate over the olympics. Of course, we have been talking about this overwhelming majority of the japanese public who felt against the games and then recently i think people started to reluctantly accept that the games would go ahead, regardless of how people felt about it is now that the games are under way some people are definitely excited and i was outside the Olympic Stadium earlier and there was a long queue of people waiting to take a picture with the olympic rings. I think people are hoping that once japanese athletes start winning medals, a lot of medals, hopefully, then the opinions my shift, but that is not to say that the opposition has died down. There are people who are still protesting, even last night. So opinions are still very much divided. A, opinions are still very much divided. ,. Divided. Mariko oi, thanks so much. Ma be divided. More workers in england will now be able to avoid Self Isolation if theyre contacted by Nhs Test and trace or pinged by the covid app. A government scheme, which had just been for Supermarket Depots and food manufacturers, is now being extended to include front Line Emergency services and some transport workers. The scheme was due to start yesterday, but has been delayed until at least monday. Richard burge is from the London Chamber of commerce. Could to have you with us. What do you make of the scheme . Could to have you with us. What do you make of the scheme . Well, it is inadeauate you make of the scheme . Well, it is inadequate and you make of the scheme . Well, it is inadequate and it is late. What you make of the scheme . Well, it is inadequate and it is late. What we i inadequate and it is late. What we need is for the government to realise we have major problems occurring across all industrial sectors because people are being pinged and having to self isolate and the vast, vast majority of them it happens unnecessarily. So government needs to actually open this up to all sectors and allow Industry Leaders and Business Leaders to make their own decisions, using the ping, but using testing rather than isolation. But using the ping, but using testing rather than isolation. Using the ping, but using testing rather than isolation. But does it not potentially rather than isolation. But does it not potentially create rather than isolation. But does it not potentially create problems. Rather than isolation. But does it | not potentially create problems in future if people do not isolate . Because if someone goes into a workplace, when they have been paying to and then they subsequently test positive and then potentially be put at risk a bigger proportion of the workforce. Be put at risk a bigger proportion of the workforce. Well, that is why they should of the workforce. Well, that is why they should actually of the workforce. Well, that is why they should actually be of the workforce. Well, that is why they should actually be testing they should actually be testing constantly every day. We do have these Test Kits and we are told that they are very, very good. They are not perfect, but then neither is vaccination perfect, so argue at my view in the London Chamber is that all businesses should basically tell their staff to use the ping. If it goes off they should use lateral Flow Tests or a Pcr Test and then just carry on, unless it is positive, in which case stay away. If this were not adopted what is the. What is the worst possible scenario . , , scenario . The worst possible scenario . The worst possible scenario is scenario . The worst possible scenario is particularly scenario . The worst possible scenario is particularly small| scenario is particularly small businesses going out of business, having managed to struggle through for the past 15 months. These people and businesses really are on the edge now and this could tip them over. I know we have been saying that, but every time some mismanagement by government has occurred, more businesses have gone out of business and we are now left with a few who are really on the precipice. This could damage them hugely. It could lead to. I dont think it will lead to mass shortages, i dont think people need to be rushing to their supermarkets, i think supermarkets have got their Supply Chain sorted out, but it will mean less choice, so when you go to supermarkets you might find the variety of Potato Crisps is less than you might imagine, but you will still be able to find food easily and eat, so it is not panic stations. But it is a real problem for businesses themselves. Richard, as eole for businesses themselves. Richard, as people are for businesses themselves. Richard, as people are now for businesses themselves. Richard, as people are now returning for businesses themselves. Richard, as people are now returning to for businesses themselves. Richard, as people are now returning to their| as people are now returning to their workplaces, some will be quite anxious about it and worried that if they are working on an indoor space, close to someone who has been pinged and has been exempted from isolating, that may make people feel uncomfortable. What would you say to them. I uncomfortable. What would you say to them. , ~ uncomfortable. What would you say to them. , ~. , them. I dont think it will lead to mass shortages, them. I dont think it will lead to mass shortages, i them. I dont think it will lead to mass shortages, i dont them. But it is a real problem for businesses themselves. Richard, as people are now returning to their workplaces, some will be quite anxious about it and worried that if they are working on indoor space, close to someone who has been pinged and has been exempted from isolating, that may make people feel uncomfortable. What would you say to themwell, i think there is a very good chance that they could equally well be infected as not have been pinged, so the more we encourage people to use the pinning because the consequence of it and the more successful they will become. My fear at the moment is people are losing confidence and i dont think that is helped by mixed messages and confused messages from government. What we need is a few ministers on tv, more scientists on tv, they are the ones that public confidence, not ministers. Richard, we must leave confidence, not ministers. Richard, we must leave it confidence, not ministers. Richard, we must leave it there, confidence, not ministers. Richard, we must leave it there, but confidence, not ministers. Richard, we must leave it there, but really l we must leave it there, but really good to speak to you, Richard Burge from the London Commerce trade and industry. Thank you. The planned lifting of coronavirus Restrictions Injersey has been put back until at least september, due to the rising number of covid cases. The opening of nightclubs and staging of big events has also been put on hold although people who are isolating can now leave their home for up to two hours to exercise outdoors. Airlines and airports are gearing up for their busiest weekend since the start of the pandemic. Heathrow is expecting 60,000 passengers to depart each day, while gatwick is operating more than 260 Flights Today compared to just 15 at the height of lockdown. Travel companies say new rules allowing fully vaccinated travellers to visit Amber List countries without quarantining on their return have provided a huge boost. Its our busiest weekend this year so far, and up a third on last weekend. So whilst the numbers are still small in comparison with a normal year, at least it feels a bit normal to the people who are managing to get away to those Beach Destinations that theyve not been able to visit for many, many months. President biden warns that the us is facing a pandemic of the unvaccinated, as the Delta Variant of Coronavirus Spreads. Lets get more on that story now. President biden has warned that the united states is facing a pandemic of the unvaccinated, as the Delta Variant of Coronavirus Spreads rapidly in areas where the Uptake Ofjabs has been low. Speaking in virginia, Mr Biden praised the governor of Alabama Kay Ivey who said it was time to start blaming the unvaccinated for the rise in infections. Heres our north america correspondent, david willis. With less than 34 of its population fully vaccinated, alabama is the least vaccinated state in this country. And thursdays remarks by its republican governor were well received by the white house. Folks supposed to have common sense. But its time to start blaming the unvaccinated folks, not the regular folks. Its the unvaccinated folks that are letting us down. In a speech, President Biden echoed governor kay ivey s assertion that the recent rise in Covid I9 cases was the fault of those who have refused to get vaccinated. What we have now is a pandemic of the unvaccinated. Heres the point. First of all, the Covid I9 deaths and hospitalisations are today among the unvaccinated people. And i know i know this has gotten a bit politicised but i hope its starting to change. A Growing Number of republicans and conservative leaders have called on people to get vaccinated in recent days following a nearly three fold increase in coronavirus cases in the last two weeks. Most of them involving people who have not been vaccinated. 56 of americans, including children, have now received at least one jab, but a new poll suggests that the majority of those who have yet to be vaccinated still say they are unlikely to do so. Fatuma kadir was seen boarding a train from Manchester Piccadilly on thursday evening, and was last spotted leaving London Euston station in the early hours of friday morning. Our correspondent, sanchia berg, is following developments. What is the latest on this . Well, the latest is, what is the latest on this . Well, the latest is, as what is the latest on this . Well, the latest is, as you what is the latest on this . Well, the latest is, as you said, what is the latest on this . Well, the latest is, as you said, that l what is the latest on this . Well, i the latest is, as you said, that the police have issued an appeal and Fatuma Kadir s parents were there, they did not speak, but they did look quite desperately worried about their daughter. The police have issued an appeal and they are particularly keen to try to track down a couple who Fatuma Kadir spoke to, according to the cctv, on the train between bolton and manchester. They are not suggesting this couple have anything to do with her disappearance. Theyjust think have anything to do with her disappearance. They just think that Fatuma Kadir might have given them some indication of where she was going and what her plans are. Family and friends have told the police that in the past she talked about wanting to set up her own close business, perhaps in the london bridge, Tower Bridge area, but of course she is only 11 and she is extremely vulnerable. It looks like the male and female are concerned for her welfare. The three get on the train, on the same train to Manchester Piccadilly. They get on the same train again to birmingham new street. I am not saying they travelled together, but they were all on the same train, so we really want to find this male, this female to get in touch because they may where fatuma was going. You mentioned that line about Fatuma Kadir wanting to set up a Business Or Base yourself in london for work, but do the police had any idea why she would have made such a journey at that time . He. They said that she was described by her parents as, a really intelligent girl, a very independent minded girl, but as i say, she is only 11 and to arrive in london in the middle of the night and then police believe she was headed for the london bridge, Tower Bridge area, they are very concerned and they said, if anyone does see her. She is five foot two, wearing a dark robe and headscarf, a blue scarf, they should call 999 because, as i say, it is quite unusual for police to issue such an urgent appeal at such a short time frame and they are very concerned about her. , a and they are very concerned about her. ,. , her. Five different types of Cycling Events are taking place at this years Tokyo Olympics. While the sight of all those athletes on bikes might inspire some of us To Hop on the saddle, not all of our local streets are suitable for cycling, let alone allowing our children to ride on. Unlike The Netherlands, where a huge portion ofjourneys are made by bike. So what does it take to make a Cycling Nation . Anna holligan has been collecting some tips from the dutch bike lanes. Here in The Netherlands, bikes rule. A0 years ago, the government created the dutch cycling embassy, as there was so much interest in how cities transform themselves into this paradise for people on bikes. And heres their first tip. Well, you need to make it really comfortable. And i think what we are doing right now is a perfect example of that. Chris bruntlett travels The World, teaching other countries how to make cycling a viable alternative to driving. We have to create these conditions where an eight year old is comfortable cycling and an 80 year old is comfortable cycling. So what does that require . Tips two and three infrastructure. Bike parking is a huge piece of it, and i think an underestimated one. If we are going to build a safe space for cycling, we need to give people a safe space to store their bike. The segregated cycle lanes, thejunctions and the intersections one thing the dutch do really well is provide physical protection all the way through the intersections so that you are notjust thrown out into no Mans Land and left to fend for yourself. And when the different types of Road Users do come into contact with each other, the bikes are always given priority. And that is something that is built into these streets. Just watch. All the traffic pausing for them at this roundabout. But these dynamics arent built out of bricks and mortar alone. Tipfour. Teaching children how to cycle in schools, its given them an education in traffic safety. And when youve been travelling by bike your whole life, it happens almost as naturally as walking. It also means most drivers have grown up on two wheels, which breeds a broader level of consciousness and conscientiousness. Tip five its written into the insurance here. If there is an accident, the onus is on the driver to prove they werent at fault. Is it practical for every country to have a Cycle Network like The Netherlands does . The good news is, yeah, it could be. Its not necessarily a copy paste, its just taking the inspiration from the dutch and the Best Practices that theyve developed. The netherlands has changed from a car dominated country to a bicycle dominated country in a matter of decades, and this is the message that we now take to cities Around The World that change is possible, you just need that long Term Commitment to making it so. So, for cities that think the dutch Model Cant be replicated, there is a guide for that. Anna holligan, bbc news, the hague. This is bbc news.
