Being held without spectators for one change and also covid 19 cases are going out for spectators and athletes. On thursday, tokyo reported close to 2000 new coronavirus cases, up by more than 600 compared with the same day last week. This chart shows the seven Day Average of daily Covid Cases in the capital. So far this month, a total of 91 cases directly linked to the olympics have been recorded. 0rganisers say these are isolated. Theyre keen to disassociate the games from any connection with cases in the wider population. Sebastian coe is a double olympic Champion And President of world athletics. He spoke earlier to the bbc s garry richardson. I do know that the protocols that were put in place the tracking, the tracing, the isolating, which is working and is testament to the amount of work that has already gone into this i believe will be enough to maintain a safe and secure games. And the rising numbers were talking about, nobody is entirely sure, garry, whether these are not generated at a local level. I think there is Something Else thats important here, too. I think what we have done an actually good job about is explaining to the athletes and the media and the technical officials and the few sponsors that will be there what the protocols are, how seriously we take them. Maybe there hasnt been as good a job as could have been made of informing local people just how seriously we take that and how seriously we take those protocols and how tight those protocols are. Six members of the Czech Olympic Team have tested positive. Czech 0lympic officials are now investigating the Charter Flight they took following media reports that most passengers took off their masks as soon as the plane took off, as well as another report that one of the team doctors had decLined to be vaccinated against covid. Heres reaction from the countrys Prime Minister. Translation its irresponsible. It shouldnt have happened. The team and the entire Czech Olympic Committee is, of course, funded by taxpayers money, and i dont understand how this is possible at all. If the Doctor Couldnt be vaccinated for medical reasons, they shouldve sent someone else. But it is a scandal, and i say it is unacceptable and it is a tragedy for the athletes. Yiri hoshek is Deputy Editor In Chief of the czech News Website that broke the story. Well, first of all, we were very suspicious about the fact that czech team identified four names of people who tested. Positive for coronavirus, but were very secretive i about the first person testing positive immediately after the arrival to tokyo. And we managed to find out that the person is, as you mentioned, the medical doctor. I a doctor of the czech tennis association, a long time doctor of the female Fed Cup team, i someone who has worked very with the likes of petra kvitova, karolina pliskova, some well known female tennis players. And as you mentioned later, i we found out that this specific person is known as a covid vaccination denier, and despite to czech rules months ago, refused to do so. And secondly, we found out that the behaviour of the passengers of the Charter Flight was very irresponsible, that after take off the vast majority of passengers, 42 people on board the flight. Including 14 sportsmen and sportswomen, basically removed their masks. The Bbc Hasnt yet been able to corroborate that account. Another olympics story today. The Opening Ceremony s creative director has been fired a day before the Opening Ceremony. Footage from the 1990s emerged showing Kentaro Koba Yashi appearing to make jokes about the holocaust. Hes the fourth high Profile Artist connected with the ceremony to be sacked. In february, the head of the Organising Committee stepped down after being quoted as saying women talked too much and that meetings with many female Board Directors would take a long time. A month later, the creative head of the games quit after suggesting that a Plus Size female comedian should perform as what he called an olympig. And just a few days ago, a composer quit the Opening Ceremony team after it emerged he had bullied classmates with disabilities at school. Dan orlowitz is a sportswriter for the japan times. The reaction has been sort of one of not quite surprised, but frustration, fatigue. I think that the fact that this is just the latest in a series of such resignations and sackings does show how poorly the Organising Committee has handled several aspects of this Lead In to the games, especially around The Opening ceremonies. With the extended amount of time that they had ti prepare for these opening ceremonies, the games were postponed in march 2020, and they obviously had to make a lot of considerations for what The Opening ceremonies would look like in the coronavirus era. So, one would think that under normal circumstances, organisers would have paid special attention to The Opening ceremonies and especially in light of the president s resignation in february, they would have a look at other members of the staff and seeing if there were any issues that needed to be addressed. But what we are seeing is just one after the other is just one after the other after the other, and especially after the resignation of the composer earlier this week, it was clear they had to move quickly to deal with with the scandal when it popped up. So it is going to be a tv only event, so naturally going to be a tv only event, so naturally the media will be very much naturally the media will be very much focused on the athletic part of the olympics and certainly rightfully so, the athletes are there rightfully so, the athletes are there and are doing their very best even there and are doing their very best even though in the heat, but i hope that media even though in the heat, but i hope that Media Wont forget to report about that Media Wont forget to report about Everything Else thats going on. . , about Everything Else thats going on. . , ,. , about Everything Else thats going on. ~. ,. , on. Ten years ago today, a far right extremist killed 77 people most of them teenagers. The attacks took place in two locations. At around 3pm in the afternoon, a bomb was detonated in oslo. Later that afternoon, there was an attack at a Summer Camp for young political activists on Utoya Island around 40 kilometres away. This is some of the Bbc Report in the aftermath of the explosion in oslo. A Bomb Attack on the heart of Norways Government. All Government Ministers seem to be safe, but at least two people are dead. Some are reported trapped. Eight people eventually died as a result of that bombing. And earlier today, a ceremony took place outside what was once the Prime Ministers office. That space has remained an empty shell since the attack due to disagreements over how to rebuild it. Heres norways Prime Minister speaking at the memorial. Translation the terror ofJuly 22nd was an attack on our democracy. It was a politically motivated Terrorist Attack against the labour party, the Workers Youth League and their ideas. It was more than one political movement that was affected. An entire country was hit on the ground, but we got up again. Norway was changed by an experience that still hurts. The majority of victims that day were young people attending a Politics Camp on Utoya Island. A wreath laying ceremony was also held there with politicians, survivors and relatives of the victims paying tribute. Lisa husby was 19 years old at the time of the attack and one of the camps leaders. She told the bbc s Witness History Programme about her experience that day. The first time i realised that something was wrong on the Island Is just after 5pm that afternoon. We could hear what we thought were firecrackers. But before we could do anything, i ijust saw this huge wall of people coming running towards me from down by the docks where the shots were coming from. And you could see in their eyes that they had seen something terrible. L and at that point, ijust thought i need and at that point, ijust thought i need to and at that point, ijust thought i need to get and at that point, ijust thought i need to get somewhere and at that point, ijust thought i need to get somewhere safe and at that point, ijust thought i need to get somewhere safe because something need to get somewhere safe because something is need to get somewhere safe because something is really, need to get somewhere safe because something is really, really need to get somewhere safe because something is really, really wrong something is really, really wrong here the attacks had a profound impact across norway, a Country Ofjust 5 Million people. This was the headLine of a norwegian newspaper a month afterwards. It translates to one in four people affected. It goes on to say that a survey carried out by the paper found that one in four people in norway know someone who was affected by the Terror Attacks. Those who were most affected, though, are the survivors. Heres one man on how he felt in the aftermath. Translation there are many of the Survivors Translation there are l many of the survivors many of the survivors from utoya who have felt Guilt And Shame because everyone fled for their lives. In an escape for life, you take actions that are about saving yourself. Many of the survivors say they are determined to move on from that day in spite of the trauma its left them with. Heres Lisa Husby again. I talk about the Terror Attack and teach people about the aftermath of the Terror Attack. I talk about right wing extremism. And i try to use it as something positive. I realise that this one friday back in 2011 shouldnt be allowed to define the rest of my lifei and to define me as a victim for the rest of my life. In the days and months after the attacks, there was criticism that the response from the authorities had been inadequate. Heres a piece from the financial times last week. It calls the Police Response chaotic and plagued by mistakes and claims that crucial Information Wasnt shared between departments. Thats something which Norways Government says has improved in the years since. Heres the Prime Minister again. Translation the terror showed us that it was necessary to strengthen i preparedness in norway. We have worked on that systemically. In the ten years that have passed, we have met all the recommendations of the July 22nd commission. Norways ability to deal with terrorism and serious crime is stronger than ever. But there are critics who claim the Government Hasnt addressed the root causes of the attack. The killer, anders breivik, had written a manifesto expressing a far right, racist, anti muslim ideology. This is the headLine from an article on the euroNews Website. It claims that a decade on from the attacks, norway still needs to address its far right problem. It goes on to say that the islamophobic far right is as strong and articulated as it used to be and that the Neo Nazi scene, though small, has good public visibility. Fredrik devon is a journalist at the norwegian Broadcaster Tv2 and was reporting in oslo on the day of the attacks ten years ago. Thank you forjoining us. What are your memories of that afternoon . Lets turn to pandemic in the uk, because the number of people told to self isolate by the Nhs Covid App has reached record levels. In the week to the 14th ofjuly, more than 600,000 people received alerts. Thats up 17 from the previous week. And thats having an impact the hospitality, transport and retail sectors. They have all reported staff shortages. Heres our Economics Editor faisal islam. It was meant to be a week of freedom from the pandemic restrictions, but last week, a Record Number of pings, over 600,000, from the Nhs Covid App. Instructions to isolate, that industries from our supermarkets to our railways say are causing havoc. The boss of Supermarket Iceland says shortages of workers are now causing store closures, something avoided in the pandemic until now. Theres certainly no reason for customers to panic, and im not panicking. I think the government should be panicking, quite frankly, and i think they need to sort this immediately. We dont have time to waste. Were here to help feed the nation through a pandemic, and actually weve now taken matters into our own hands. Were hiring an extra 2000 people temporarilyjust to create a deeper pool of labour from which we can pull from as our workforce continues continues to get pinged and they have to isolate. The government acknowledged its concern about some localised images of empty shop shelves. We review the situation. Were very concerned about some developments. Its not universal thing, i dont want people to get the impression that every shelf in every supermarket is bare. Thats not the case. But we are certainly concerned about instances of shortages. This is notjust about the impact of the Nhs Covid App reflecting high levels of cases and telling workers to stay at home. Those sectors most affected are those where there were already existing labour shortages. For example, drivers of lorries, where there are Tens Of Thousands of vacancies as a result of the combination of the impact of the Covid Pandemic and Post Brexit Employment issues. One of the biggest suppliers of meals to hospitals, schools and prisons is keeping pinged workers who Test Negative at work. Its understandable that employers who are under a lot of pressure to continue to produce will try and find ways to make the System Work and work legally, and under the current law, j the app allows you to. Above ground, they are starting to clear up though. But the true horror of this intersection is what happened underground at this metro station. The Electricity Supply and mobile Phone Coverage is not fully restored, but the worst of The Rain seems to have passed for now which leaves time for other things. Fishing. In an underpass . Robin brant, bbc news, zhengzhou in eastern china. Lets turn to iran now, where widespread protests over Water Shortages are continuing for an eighth day and are growing increasingly violent. A third civilian has now died, and 1a Police officials have been injured. This was the capital, tehran, on tuesday. Protesters have been directing their anger at the regime. These people are shouting death to the Islamic Republic Prolongued Drought and high temperatures have brought on a water crisis. Its devastated agriculture, dried up rivers, and led to electricity blackouts. Khuzestan province, in the southwest, is at the heart of these protests. It sits on 80 of Irans Oil and 60 of its gas reserves. In other words, its critical to the countrys economy. It also has the densest arab population. And thats often led to tensions, violence and attempted separatism. But it shouldnt come as a shock to irans government. In 2018, the former head of irans environmental Protection Agency said were past the crisis stage. Its a water bankruptcy. Our Demand And Consumption are way higher than the available water. This year, the World Meteorological Organisation warned that they have built dams to divert River Water to other provinces where there is a great deal of industry that needs the water. On wednesday, the iranian Supreme Leader commented on the protest, the first time he had done so publicly saying. He is due to take office as the new president on the 3rd of august. Hes known to be Line-ultraconservative'>HardLine Ultraconservative who is close to the Supreme Leader. He is known to be tough on political desk dissidents too. This will be a test on how well he will respond. This is what hes been saying today. Translation the problem with khuzestan is a compounded one. Different problems have merged that are raising concerns for our people. Places like khuzestan that are special cases need to be given special attention. In the meantime, there are rumours of Internet Blackouts to curb the protests. And this is from the Internet Monitoring Organisation netblocks they say mobile Internet Services have been increasingly disrupted since 15july. Im joined now by dr brenda shaffer, a senior adviser for energy at the nonprofit research group, foundation for defence of democracies. Thank you very much forjoining us on an outside source. Im describing these protests about water, but are they really about water . 50. I these protests about water, but are they really about water . They really about water . So, i think there are multiple they really about water . So, i think there are multiple factors, they really about water . So, i think there are multiple factors, but there are multiple factors, but water may be the trigger. There is definitely ethnic grievances about discrimination, about the humiliation of the Quasi Arab group within iran. Its really hard to separate Where Ethnicity begins, where environmental and water threats began. You knowjobs and discrimination. Its really a variety of factors. To discrimination. Its really a variety of factors. Discrimination. Its really a variety of factors. To what degree are the Protests Variety of factors. To what degree are the protests we variety of factors. So, that is something thats really elsewhere in iran . So, that is something thats really important. The spearhead of these protests, the Quasi Arab groups. There are two major areas in Quasi Arab groups. There are two majorareas in iran. Quasi arab groups. There are two major areas in iran. One is in Irans Oiland gas major areas in iran. One is in Irans Oil and Gas Production from the other area is the Bushehr Region where the protests have broken out. So the same Ethnic Group that leads into different of iran. And also other groups it seems labour services and Labour Unions have been having ongoing demonstrations. It seems to be taking place in parallel, and there seems to be some general anti regime activity, especially in tehran. Ihe general antiregime activity, especially in tehran. Normally he did that for expect to hear from the authorities and we have a new leader coming in as well, sol authorities and we have a new leader coming in as well, so i guess this is an early test of his approach to these kinds of challenges. I agree with ou. These kinds of challenges. I agree with yon its these kinds of challenges. I agree with you. Its an these kinds of challenges. I agree with you. Its an early these kinds of challenges. I agree with you. Its an early test. These kinds of challenges. I agree with you. Its an early test. I with you. Its an early test. I would say that one of the tests will be on saturday because the people that reside in the north of iran, the checks have called for demonstrations can already the regime has started to join demonstrations can already the regime has started Tojoin Dan and the other gem demonstrations. Already the regime is trying to intimidate people to arrest them in order to prevent them from taking place. So i think on saturday, we will have a task. It also i wouldnt be surprised if the regime this piece might hear, release water, calm down tensions, and then after he is inaugurated with his background starting really thorough crackdown on the people that participated in these protests and demonstrations. Participated in these protests and demonstrations. ~ ,. ,. , demonstrations. When you say release water, can you explain demonstrations. Well, you know, this is the Where Ethnicity and water overlap, | Where Ethnicity and water overlap, so over the past couple of decades, there has been huge Water Diversion projects. Its a Water Bench Region multiple rep errors, the depression of those waters to the persian heartland, and even last week and a big Opening Ceremony for waters in east behind. 50 this underground tunnel that difference what are two different areas. 50 the government can move the water around. That being said, there is a systemic shortage of water that just being said, there is a systemic shortage of Water Thatjust by moving the water around, they can relieve it in one area but creates a problem and another can at the same with electricity, the regime under produces electricity. Its not a matter of just coming produces electricity. Its not a Matter Ofjust coming if you shut down consumption in one place and open another, they really dont produce enough to meet peoples needs to stop by thank you for your help. We appreciate it. And the foundation of defensive democracies. Thank you. An update from india. We know that a third of its Adult Population has received one dose. Update on india and its covid Vaccine Roll out so far a third of its Adult Population has received one dose. In some areas, the figure is much higher than that. Changlang is a remote district in the far eastern state of aruna chal pradesh. More than 80 of the adults there have had theirfirstjab. Rajini vaidyanathan has been to find out how they managed it. These are the lengths some Health Workers are going to, to deliver vaccines across india. In this far flung corner of the country, theyre making arduous journeys. To reach remote villages, accessible only by foot. In the blistering heat, they trekked through the jungle. Covid cases have been rising here in the state of arunachal pradesh. Theyre picking up the pace of their vaccine drive. Translation we go by foot, ports or overhanging bridges, there is some very dangerous bridges here. Our main responsibility is to maintain the temperature of the Cool Box to preserve the vaccines. Thats why we try to reach the villages as soon as we can. This team are pushing themselves to the limit. But here, and across india, there have been challenges. The government has been criticised for being too slow to get the jabs out. In this district, theyve offered cash prizes to Health Centres which deliver the most doses. How long have we got now . Half an hour, if we need to walk more. Another half an hour . Yeah. Oh, wow. This is not easy. After three gruelling hours, we finally make it to the tribal village of changlang. Outside the school, they are already waiting for theirjabs. Its quite a turnaround after villagers were scared to get a vaccine. This person was one of the many who needed persuading. There were rumours that he would fall sick or die after taking one, he told me. Most villagers didnt want to come for the vaccine, but Health Workers convinced us, so we agreed. It took months of work to overcome Vaccine Hesitancy among the districts 65,000 adults. India has just come out of a devastating second wave and the race is now on to get as many people vaccinated as possible. Nationally, around a third of adults have had at least one dose but here in changlang, despite the odds, theyve done much better. More than 80 of people have had one shot. Changlangs Vaccine Programme is going against the grain. Officials say incentives are also boosting turnout. At this nearby village, they are running a Vaccination Drive on the same day that theyre distributing free rice rations. In this farming community, its an effective way to encourage people to show up. Most of the people are into agriculture, they have two spare. Two days, one for getting rice and another for vaccination. So the idea behind putting both those things together is so they have to spare only one day. They might be leading the way here in changlang, but indias Vaccination Programme is making slow progress. It still has a long way to go if it wants to reach its target of immunising all 915 Million adults by The End of this year. Rajini vaidyanathan, bbc news, arunachal pradesh. Lets turn to the latest in the investigations into the origins still to come, where covid 19 is still identified. Seven people who died in the Creighton Tram Crash in 2016 were killed as a result of an accident. An inquest has concluded. Thejerry rolled out a verdict of unlawful killing. The tram was travelling more than three times faster than a speed its been a [ls year wait, but Todays Inquest does not provide the answers those who lost Loved Ones here have hoped for. Its a shambles. Absolute shambles right from the beginning. Before it even started, it was a shambles. It is a disgusting. The way the whole thing is been run. Im absolutely disgusted, absolutely. Seven people died on 9th November 2016 when the Rush Hour Service took a sharp corner, came off the tracks and tipped over. This reconstruction was shown at the inquest. Investigators found there were no Speed Limit Signs in the tunnel. The train was going at 45mph. The limit was 12mph. The inquest reported that the driver had become disorientated probably due to a lack of sleep. He did not brake in time. The jury found that the crash was an accident. Transport for london and the Tram Operator were not called to give evidence, nor was the driver as he was too sick. Outside court, there was anger. I dont believe that the jury could have ever come back| with a different decision. Bearing in mind the evidence that theyve heard. The evidence that has not been heard is, you know, its crucial. Drivers, other people that are part of these organisations, you know, | without that evidence, we never was going i to get a good ruling. But its not The End. This is only the beginning. Transport for london said that the coroner had decided that it would not give evidence. Since the crash, tfl say they have made changes to ensure nothing like this can happen again. The families plan to call for the High Court to grant them a new inquest, saying Theirfight Forjustice continues. CaroLine davies, bbc news. Im ross atkins with the outside source. Our lead story. Comes from japan, less Than 2a hours now before the delayed Olympic Games began in tokyo. The has recorded its highest number of Covid Cases since january. Lets turn to the latest in the investigations into the origins of the coronavirus outbreak. China has angrily dismissed a proposal by the World Health Organization to dig deeper into whether covid 19 could have escaped from a chinese laboratory. Heres the official response from beijing. Translation when i first saw the whos plan for second stage investigation, i was extremely surprised. This plan takes the hypothesis that china violated Laboratory Procedures and caused leakage of the virus, as one of its research priorities. In this aspect, i feel the plan disrespects Common Sense and shows arrogance towards science. In the last hour, the white House Press Secretary was asked about chinas actions and gave this frank response. Were deeply disappointed. Their position is completely irresponsible and frankly dangerous. Alongside other Member States around the world, we continue to call for china to provide the needed access to data and samples. The who has said the second stage of its investigation in china should include audits of relevant laboratories and Research Institutions operating in the area of the initial Human Cases that will mean here the wuhan institute of technology. The first stage of the investigation judged it extremely unlikely the virus could have come from a laboratory. Thatjugement has come in for criticism including from the head of who itself. There was a premature push to, you know, especially reduce one of the options, like the lab theory. As you know, i was a Lab Technician myself, an immunologist and i have worked in the lab, and lab accidents happen, its common, i have seen it happening and i had, myself, had errors, so it can happen. Howard zhang is head of the bbc chinese. The who had been seen as more sympathetic towards chinas they are not going to like what they are hearing, are they . Are hearing, are they . Know, of course not are hearing, are they . Know, of course not. If are hearing, are they . Know, of course not. If you are are hearing, are they . Know, of| course not. If you are continuing with the previous chinese spokespersons speech, he was quite angrily pointing out, if you guys are essentially along the Line from you guys want to find origins of the virus from the lab, may because start and some other country. He essentially went on to say things along that Line. Essentially went on to say things along that Line. Nonetheless, the. Uestions along that Line. I think thats the millionDollar Question who says it wants . I think thats the millionDollar Question now, | the million Dollar Question now, because i think its becoming, as people pointed out, its becoming politcised, this big, big question, and on chinas side, they see big government, state media, painting this as an international kind of conspiracy, trying to paint china as bad, but some critics of the government, and some international analysts are also pointing out to me you know, essentially, president of china had his whole prestige and defeating coronavirus within the country quite quickly, so any link to the somehow an initial failure is impossible to contemplate at this moment. 50 impossible to contemplate at this moment. ,. Moment. So when the authorities are asked where they think that a virus came from, what is their answer, what are their investigations . Investigations . I think most pay says, life has returned to normal because of the really, really stringent lockdowns everywhere, and in select Places Committee will occasionally hear this regional small scale lockdown, but overall in major cities, like has returned to normal. We always appreciate your help. Thank you very much indeed, from bbc chinese. Lets turn to the world of fashion now and an exclusive interview with two big players. One is halima Aden The Supermodel Famous for wearing a hijab on the catwalk. She quit the industry last november because it was incompatible with her muslim faith. The other is us Designer Tommy Hilfiger who needs no further introduction. As part of the bbc s 100 Women Series our global religion reporter, Sodaba Hay Dairy spoke to them about discrimation in fashion. Halima aden made Catwalk History when she became the first hijab wearing supermodel, featuring in campaigns for some of the biggest names in the Fashion Industry. But over time, she felt uncomfortable about some of the styles she was being asked to model. I felt great Pressure Being the first muslim hijab wearing model in the industry and it got to a place where i was so far removed from my own image and my hijab kept shrinking. Now we have brought her together with fashion Designer Tommy Hilfiger who she worked with extensively to talk about the need for change in the Fashion Industry. I understand why you left the Fashion Industry and im surprised more models have not been vocal about it because theres been a lot of abuse and i would say disrespect. Ive been speaking with models from diverse backgrounds here in london so they can share their experiences and questions with halima and tommy. Ive been asked by a stylist i if i could wear a Cutout Dress and we had a whole argument about it, because i told them that i wasnt willing to wear. Something so revealing. I think its outrageous. That really angers me. Its embarrassing to be a part of a business that has such outrageously antiquated ideas. This is another reason why there needs to be diversity with the make up crew, the hair, the stylists, so its not just about having a diverse catwalk. Fashion brands around the world have pledged to improve diversity at all levels of their company, but a 2019 study of the beauty and Fashion Industry in the us found that almost three quarters of board of Director Positions were held by white men. My question to tommy hilfiger. Is if you are educating your Staff And Casting directors as to what diversity really is . Ive had, iwould say, knockdown, drag out fights with Casting Directors who have told me that this girl doesnt belong on our runway for certain reasons. And i have said, look, you work for me. Were doing what i want to do. Good for you. So with my teams, i make sure that we are equally as diverse and inclusive behind the scenes as we are in front of the Lines. My hope is that the entire industry changes. And i know that i cannot affect that change alone. It has to run like a river through the entire company. Although halima chose to walk away, she hopes that by quitting, it will stop other diverse talent from leaving the industry. Dont change yourself, change the game. I sacrificed my career so that they could feel comfortable speaking up in any setting.
