And Americas Colin Morikawa heads the leaderboard, on the second day of The Open, in kent. And Coming Up on the Bbc News channel. Max verstappen sets the pace in practise on Day One of the british Grand Prix as thousands of fans back are back at silvestone. Good Evening And Welcome to the Bbc News at six. More than 100 people have died across europe in severe flooding, the worst in several decades, and many hundreds are also missing. In germany, Emergency Crews are searching for dozens who are unaccounted for, with the chancellor, angela merkel, describing the floods as a catastrophe. Torrential rain has also devastated parts of belgium, the netherlands and luxembourg. Swollen rivers, including the rhine, the meuse and the ahr, have swept through towns and villages, destroying homes leaving many stranded. In erftstadt in germany, whole houses have been submerged and a landslide has demolished parts of the town. Well, our correspondent, Jenny Hill is in erfstadt, with the very latest for us this evening. Good evening. This is the headquarters for the Emergency Services who through the night and through the day have been running their Search And Rescue operation. Terrible scenes in this part of the town Last Night, a large landslide, houses collapsing, parts of the area still underwater. 0r Date the Death Toll has continued to rise and we expect it will rise further all day. They are still people unaccounted for, you walk this region and you meet people who looked dazed and bewildered, and quite visibly still in a state of shock. Perhaps the german president Frank Walter Steinmeier spoke for many when he described what has happened and what is happening as a tragedy which has left him stunned. This country is reeling from the enormity of its loss. This is the town of erfstadt where the ground just fell away. Under the weight of water, houses collapsed in the night. Dramatic rescues, but this morning the authorities said people trapped in their homes were calling them for help but in many Cases Rescue was impossible. Those who did make it out came to shelters like this. We metjohannes here, he and his wife were winched to safety Last Night. He arrived barefoot and soaking wet. What were you thinking as they winched you up, i asked. I had to leave my cat behind, he says. Johannes has lived here more than 70 years. There have been floods, he told us, but not like this. Translation you can run | from fire but not from water. Tens of thousands of people still dont have power. And theyre on alert. Water levels have dropped in some areas but few here feel safe. You can see how powerful the water is here still, and whats worrying people in this area is thatjust upstream there is a dam and experts say it is unstable. They are still inspecting it but people think if that dam breaks the water is heading in this direction. And with every hour, news of more deaths. People are still missing. With mobile networks down, its hard to know how many made it to safety. Theyre desperate for help here. This was a caravan park. How to even begin clearing up. We met the owners, still visibly in shock. Translation indescribable. Weve been here since 1979. Weve never seen anything like this. If we dont get any help, well have to go on benefits. Bankrupt. Germany, a country famed for its strength, its security, feels vulnerable now. Jenny hill, Bbc News, erfstadt. The flooding has been a tragedy for several countries across Western Europe. This was the scene Last Night in a town just outside liege in belgium. Homes engulfed in flames, making it difficult for the rescue services. Not far away, in the town of pepinster, the army was having to airlift people to safety. All around homes destroyed and businesses wiped out. And this is the city of roermond in the netherlands, that remains submerged. Just south from here, in maastrict, around 10,000 people have been advised, to leave their homes. 0ur Correspondent Anna holligan is in valkenburg, which is just outside maastrict, and joins us now. Just explain some of these scenes that you have seen today. The emergency that you have seen today. Tue Emergency Services that you have seen today. Tte Emergency Services here are still working to restore the essentials, water and electricity, but throughout the day we have seen local people pitching in, sweeping, pumping, serving coffee. Thousands of people have been evacuated from the banks of the River Meuse and a dyke has been breached not farfrom here. Hospital patients, hundreds of them, have been transferred out of them, have been transferred out of the danger zone, and across the border in belgium at least 22 people have lost their lives. The belgian Prime Minister has declared the 20th Ofjuly a national day of mourning. He says this may be the most catastrophic flooding the country has ever seen. In switzerland, rivers have burst their banks and there are fears there may be mudslides in the alps. The rain has stopped but the worst might not be over yet. Stopped but the worst might not be over et. ~ stopped but the worst might not be over et. , ~ ,. , stopped but the worst might not be over et. , ~ i. , stopped but the worst might not be over et. , ~ ,. ,. ,. , some politicians in germany say the extreme weather is the result of global warming, and theyre calling for work on Climate Protection Measures to be accelerated. 0ur chief environment correspondent, justin rowlatt, assesses the role of Climate Change in the record amounts of rainfall, now devastating parts of europe. The floods in germany are not the only extreme Weather Event we have seen this summer. There was the dramatic heatwave in canada and the Western United States last month, and russia, mexico and New Zealand have all been experiencing unusually high temperatures. Now, the Climate Science is very clear on this, it has been predicting notjust for years, but for decades, that if we continue to pump huge amounts of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere, we will experience increasingly high temperatures, and because warm air holds more moisture, that means heavier rainfall as well and therefore floods. You only have to look at the pictures of these devastating floods to know that we need to do better, and it is not ok for this number of people to die in 2021 from floods. The next Obvious Question is, is the world doing enough to tackle Climate Change . Again, the answer is very clear. It is not. The un says we need to reduce Carbon Emissions by 7 every year for the next decade if were going to stand a reasonable chance of staying within what is reckoned to be the safe limit, 1. 5 degrees centigrade. Now, we did achieve that last year but in the teeth of the pandemic, so the only good outcome from these recent extreme Weather Events is if it encourages the world to raise its carbon cutting game, when it meets at the Landmark Climate Conference in glasgow in november. Justin rowlatt, Bbc News. The uk has recorded more than 50,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day, for the first time since january. It comes as the Office For National Statistics says new figures for England Show one in every 95 people has the virus. On monday, the majority of Covid Restrictions in england, are due to be lifted, and eased in scotland. Heres our medical editor, fergus walsh. Queueing for art and for a vaccine, exclusive access to tate modern s galleries this evening was on offer to those getting a jab at this Iconic London setting. With restrictions lifting in england on monday, in cases increasing, the race between the virus and the vaccine is intensifying. In newham in east Londonjust Vaccine is intensifying. In newham in East London just over a third vaccine is intensifying. In newham in East Londonjust over a third of adults are fully immunised, half the uk level. So council teams are going door to door to encourage people to have the jab. The number of first vaccinations across the uk has halved in the past two weeks as demand from young people starts to falter, and yet again the nhs has appealed to adults to come forward forfirst and second appealed to adults to come forward for first and second doses. And that can mean overcoming vaccine hesitancy, especially in the young. The new study has found that one in three young adults hospitalised with covid suffered complications like Lung And Heart damage, and although old and frail adults are at the greatest risk, it is a reminder that covid can be indiscriminate in who it targets. Fergus walsh, Bbc News. The latest coronavirus figures show infections continuning to rise sharply across the uk. 51,870 new infections were recorded in the latest 24 hour period, taking the average per day in the past week to 39,714. 2,964 people are in hospital with covid and 49 deaths were recorded in the last 2a hours. More than 46 Million people have now had theirfirstjab thats 87. 6 of uk adults. And 35. 5 million 67. 5 of all adults have had two jabs. Businesses are warning of looming staff shortages, as growing numbers of workers have to self isolate, on being contacted by the nhs covid app. Transport unions say things will only get worse next week and are warning of dire consequences, when most Covid Restrictions are lifted in england. Rule changes making fully vaccinated people exempt from having to quarantine if theyve had contact with an infected person, arent due to come into effect untll mid august. Downing street says the Nhs Contact tracing app remains one of the best tools we have to tackle coronavirus. With more, heres sarah campbell. The pressure on business is unrelenting. In the last week we had our head of production, he got pinged, then the guy below him, the manufacturing manager, he got pinged. Then the Distribution Manager got pinged and then the guy who is managing our new Tap Yard which was due to open on friday, he also got pinged. This brewery should have been welcoming 100 business customers to The Opening of a new on Site Bar this evening but with nine members of Staff Self isolating the event is off and the new bar will remain closed. You start thinking, the numbers are going down, weve got a deadline, were going to be out of it, its all going to be fine, but now youre just thrust straight back into it, into the fear of the pinging and the fear of getting coronavirus, having people on site, all of those things just make our entire industry very, very nervous, although they are all desperate to open because it has been such a financially crippling period. Across town, one of the brewery s customers, the royal oak pub. It was closed recently for ten days after a Staff Member tested positive and the rest of the team were pinged to self isolate. You have ordered stock in, everything is fresh food, as well, so that will go off, this will happen, youve lost money, all of these things, so it is a concern that if we get pinged today, tomorrow, especially someone from the management team, then it spirals and we have to do the whole thing again. More than half A Million people in england and wales alone were pinged by this Nhs App in the first week ofjuly, so the impact on business from pubs to major manufacturers has been huge, and if you are not self isolating because of work, you may well be because your Childs Classroom Bubble has burst. At this school in nearby high wycombe, at times a third of staff and almost 300 pupils have been self isolating. This is the most stressful that i think we have all felt and i think the children and their parents have felt that, as well. Real fatigue, lots of wonderful positive messages out there that we are heading back towards normality, that we have gone to stage four of the road map, but that is not how it has felt in the last couple of weeks. 140,000 people are expected to watch sundays Grand Prix at silverstone and many more pings seem almost inevitable, but today Downing Street insisted that the Nhs App is doing what it was designed to do and remains one of the best tools available to help tackle coronavirus. Sarah campbell, Bbc News. The Labour Leader, Sir Keir starmer, says Hell Sweat Blood over months and years to earn the respect of voters. Speaking to the bbc after taking questions from former Labour Supporters in blackpool, he admitted there is a Trust Issue with his party. 0ur political editor, laura kuenssberg, was there. Labours credibility took an awful blow. I got disillusioned because i think they went too far left. It was a long time ago i voted labour. Labours washed away in so many parts of the country the party used to call home, On The Beach or in the ballroom. Im not saying im not ready to vote labour again, but i would have some questions. And here is the Man Whosejob depends on getting them back onside. Im keir. Can i call you Sir Keir . 0r keir. Yeah. There was a plea to stop his Party Fighting amongst themselves. Get rid of all the bickering people. You tell them, look, are you labour or are you not . If youre labour, that is my plan and, if not, go, form another party and do what you want. You want to hear one voice. And there was still concern about Anti Semitism during jeremy corbyns time in charge. Good, decent, compassionate labour people were having to have bodyguards, threatened by other factions of your party. You were on kind of a death spiral. Its the stigma ofjeremy corbyn. 18 months on and its still there. People think he is toxic. 0njeremy corbyn, we got a verdict in 2019 on him, and that is why we then had a Leadership Contest and why i know we have to change the Labour Party. What made you want to lead the Labour Party . I i want to ensure. We can be a brilliant country. We can be a fantastically brilliant country, and we are not. Some still disappointed by tony Blair And Gordon brown. I would love to believe you but i dont know yet whether i can believe you, so id have to take a risk, wouldnt i . Thats what id have to do. Id have to take a risk. And im up for taking a risk, because i want to be labour. In my heart of hearts, i want to be labour. I and the Labour Party have to earn your vote. But he had an offerfor them, too. So ive got some strong ideas. Jobs for the under 25s, buying british, and a Recovery Plan for children. You know, words come easy, you know, a Recovery Plan. But its like actions speak louder than words. Breakfast clubs, Free School Meals . Its a start. I the Labour Thing is to spend a lot. Of money but then the conservatives come in and then start cutting back everything to save money. We are going to have to make choices. To say, if you are going to pay for this, you Cant Pay for that. Ijust think its all pie in the sky, to be honest. The very clear message from these people here tonight was that they dont trust labour, and youve been in charge for a year and a half now. So have you been continuing to let them down . I think they appreciated that i was having this conversation with them, listening to what they had to say but, you know, these are people not voting labour, so of course theres a Trust Issue there, and that trust has to be earned, and that i will do, sweat and blood, over the next days, weeks, months and years until the next general election. But did he manage any of that tonight . If you would have voted labour at the beginning of tonight, put your hand up. If you feel now you would vote labour, put your hand up. If you feel now that you might vote labour, put your hand up. A start, perhaps, in one town on one night, but a Conversation Labour wants with the whole country. Laura kuenssberg, Bbc News, blackpool. And you can watch more of the exchanges with the Labour Leader in lauras film, starmer the voters verdict, on the Bbc Iplayer or download the latest episode of newscast on bbc sounds. Ten years since the death of Amy Winehouse, we talk to her parents about the daughter they knew. Coming up in sportsday on the Bbc News channel. Mark cavendish has to wait until the final day of the Tour De France if hes to make history by winning a Record 35th Stage at the tour. The Coronavirus Pandemic has prompted many people to re evaluate how they live their lives and, with Covid Restrictions expected to be lifted in england on monday, Waiting Lists for homes in more rural parts of the country are set to get longer. In East Lindsey in lincolnshire, the number of sales agreed is up 56 in two years, compared to a Uk Average of 26 . Danny savage has been to meet some of those whove made the move. Because we both know i played my part. Rob and sharon are professional actors. Pre pandemic, they were at the top of their game. Aint No Doubt about it. In march last year, we were on tour with the international and Uk Tour of mamma mia. Myself and rob were lucky enough to be playing the lead roles opposite Each Other in the show, and we were living with a suitcase, a car, the dog, out On The Road with nearly two or three years work lined up. When the work stopped, they re evaluated their lives and have settled in rural lincolnshire, where life is very different from the west end. Its kind of like night and day. Metropolitan city, where you can meet A Thousand strangers a minute and, in louth, they know what ive ordered at the Co Op before i pay for it. Weve done some workshops in schools and classes. Ive got some students here now as well. Its hard to try and find silver linings, i think, over the last year. Its been really difficult but i think louth and this house is definitely one of them for us. Rachel has run an Estate Agent in the area for decades. They are thinking about their health more. About their mental wellbeing more and they are thinking about their family more. Nearly all the properties in her window are sold. Shes never known a year like it. Because people can work from home and because there are those people that are never going to go back into that Office Environment again, they are looking and thinking, right, 0k, is there space now for our children to play in the garden . Is there a good Internet Speed . Could we actually live here as a family . And this area does tick a lot of those boxes. Did you have three greenhouses in barnsley . No, couldnt even fit one greenhouse. Kelly and mark are one such couple. Theyve moved from built up South Yorkshire to a quiet hamlet in east lincolnshire. Its certainly different from life near the m1. We saw people around usjumping ship. We saw people literally putting their houses on the market and having a sale within a week. Im doing 15, 20,000 steps a day and the kids are probably doing more than that, to be honest. We havent had the tv on since we moved in. We can work remotely. We can live without all these services around us. The children are actually not that bothered. Letsjust go. Weve loved it. Are you happier now than you were before covid . Infinitely. Yes. Infinitely. Back at an outdoor venue, Rob And Sharon are doing a sound check. Would you like to try one voice at a time . After the darkest of Dark Times for their industry. I think, for a lot of people, we feel like Weve Kind of got off the Hamster Wheel a little bit. When you stop and you breathe, i think thats going to be a real lesson for everybody after this last year and a half. Sharon sexton ending that report from danny savage. The winner of numerous Grammy And Brit awards, she was just 27 when she died, and had struggled with addiction to alcohol and drugs. Now in a new bbc documentary, her parents, janis and mitch, want to show a different side of their daughter, and theyve been speaking to our music reporter, mark savage. 0nly scared of myself. Love is a losing game. Its ten years since Amy Winehouse died of Alcohol Poisoning at the age of 27. I will always remember our last words. I said, i love you, amy. She said, i love you, mummy. And i can always remember the love she had for me. Her story has been told countless times but, looking back, her family say the Medias Treatment of the singer was unacceptable. It was disgusting. And it wasnt just amy, it was the way that they treated people. You know, they called her wino, they called herjunkie, they called her drug addict. They couldnt do that today. Its got better, marginally. There she is. Hello, darling in a new documentary about amys life, Mitch And Janis want to set the record straight. You Cant Airbrush alli the horrible stuff out. We wouldnt do that. But even through the times when she was seriously ill, | what got her through it and what got us through it it might seem like a stupid thing to say was our sense of humour. | how would you like her to be remembered . As the nice person she was, soulful person, and caring. 0n the 23rd, were all together at the cemetery. The first ten minutes, well be sobbing and then, after that, well be in fits of laughter with a new amy anecdote. Although its not a joyful thing that you would go and celebrate, we do. We actually go and remember her. And amys parents hope her legacy will notjust be music but a better understanding of mental health. Mark savage, Bbc News. Every day, we make thousands of choices, but some are able to make more than others. Take lawrence 0koye, whose choices were defined by the Tools Nature gave to him. And what has he got here . Its long. Oh, yes this is him at the London 2012 Olympic games, just two years after he became a full time Discus Thrower. A year later, he chose a new sport, american football, with the san francisco 49ers. I had a lot of fun. One thing i did learn though was that you are either getting better or worse. You never stay the same. So, each day, thats why i always try and focus on getting better each day. Thats a principle thats really helped me rise so quickly in discus again. Six foot six, 20 stone and a 100 metres best of under 11 seconds, he was likened to a junior jonah lomu, but he chose discus. I was bitterly disappointed in london. I got to the final and came last. The bitterness still remains. Thats why im very much focused on just doing what i need to do to perform at my best. A vegan diet and obsessive attention to detail and in the best shape of his life, could tokyo be the right choice at the right time . To me, whats more interesting is seeing how much i can get out of myself. Am i going to have the courage to perform at my best when it matters most . Its nice having the capability to throw a world record, but who cares if you dont actually do it . With a place at Oxford University on hold, another choice awaits, but 0koye is only thinking about the here and now. Still, any advice for his london 2012 self . 0n reflection, any words to that 19 year old . Life experience is there for a reason.
