That his plans for Levelling Up communities are a Win Win for the whole of the uk. He says it wont make richer areas poorer. And the open Golf Championship returns after two years 30 Thousand enjoying the action at Royal St georges in kent. Hello. Very good Evening And Welcome if you have joined hello. Very good Evening And Welcome if you havejoined us. Heavy Rain And Flooding have killed at least 58 people in germany and dozens more are missing after the worst floods there in living memory. Police helicopters and hundreds of soldiers have been deployed to help stranded residents in areas where some homes have been washed away. Parts of belgium, The Netherlands and france have also been badly affected. It follows Record Rainfall in parts of Western Europe and warnings that there is more to come. Our Europe Correspondentjenny Hill is in one of the worst hit areas in western germany. Yes, its been a terrible 2a hours for this part of germany, but, of course, for other parts of europe, too. Im standing on the banks of the river ahr. You can see just how fast flowing and swollen it is. People here say around about this time yesterday the water here suddenly rose up and rushed through towns and villages with devastating effect. As people in the area ask, is this climate Change Inaction . Angela merkel has described whats happened here as a catastrophe. There was, many here told us, no warning. Lives destroyed and homes lost in a matter of minutes. The water ripped up the roads, tossed cars aside like toys. We met margaretta just as she arrived back in the village of schult. She and her family fled last night. At the very last minute, she says, a fireman got us out. The family are safe, though her son was injured hes in hospital. Margaretta points out what was her neighbours house, but she says she doesnt know what happened to them. As to her own property, half the house has gone, her daughter tells us. It has been a devastating 2a hours for West Germany, but for belgium and The Netherlands, too. Rooftop rescues, people dragged to safety. Homes smashed like matchboxes. More than a0 people are dead in West Germany alone. Others are still missing. Armin laschet, who may succeed Angela Merkel as germanys next chancellor says it is no doubt it is the result of climate change. Translation we will be confronted by such events again and again and this means we need more speed in climate protection measures european, nationwide, worldwide. In schult, theyre still in shock. Michal and his friend had just finished refurbishing their pub. They were supposed to open on saturday. Better news for their Neighbours Dog they managed to pull him to safetyjust in time last night. Its hard to imagine that just yesterday, this was a quiet village street. Whats worrying people now is that theres more Rain Forecast this evening. What will happen, theyre asking, when the Water Levels rise again . For now, homeless and fearful, they mourn their dead and wait anxiously for night to come. Jenny hill, Bbc News, schult. Weather forecaster Chris Fawkes explains whats behind the extraordinary Rainfall Weve seen across europe. This was as the storm really started pouring down. You can see the heaviest rain was across parts of West Germany. The heaviest falls, actually, to the South West of bonn, but also luxembourg in the firing line, Eastern Parts of belgium, The Netherlands and into north eastern areas of france. But it was to the South West of bonn where we saw the largest Rainfall Totals with about 158mm of rain. Now, we think thats around about three times as much rain as wed normally see in the whole ofjuly, but this fell in 24 hours. Some of the thunderstorms that were mixed in with this Weather Front brought some huge falls of Rain Ofjust an hour and that in itself would bring some pretty big flooding problems. I will show you as well why the weather became so severe. Thats down to the Jet Stream Pattern. These large waves in the Jet Stream caused an upper area of low pressure to get locked in place across germany. Now, what that did is it meant that the Storm System Couldnt move but as well as that It Fed on huge Temperature Contrasts that we had across europe. So, weve got some very hot area across eastern areas with temperatures well into the 30s, cooler and fresher into the North West. Big contrast in humidity as well. This had come up from the mediterranean across northern germany, mixed into this area of low pressure and where the winds converge thats where we had the heaviest falls of rain with this line of thunderstormsjust locked in place. It meant that we had storms for hour after hour after hour. This has been extreme rainfall. The floods have been catastrophic, as weve seen, and, well, things are still pretty bad out there. The showers are still around but theyre not going to be anywhere near as torrential as they have been over recent days, im pleased to say. Chris fawkes there with some hopefully better news. At 8 30 well be speaking to a journalist in dusseldorf, one of the worst hit regions. The Prime Minister has set out some more details of the governments plan to Level Up the uk insisting it would be a Win Win for everyone. In a speech in coventry, borisjohnson promised more powers outside london and the South East of england and said deprived areas would benefit from more investment in education, infrastructure and regeneration. But labour described his speech as gibberish. With more heres our political correspondent alex forsyth. The Prime Ministers long promised a drive to tackle inequality across the country. Its a pledge he cannot afford to break, and at this Battery Centre in coventry today, he tried to spell out his vision. We dont want to level down, we dont want to decapitate the tall poppies. We dont think you can make the poor parts. Of the country richer by making the rich parts poorer. That was an attempt to reassure tories in the south, worried politicalfocus has shifted further north. He said investment across the board was vital, in public services, transport, towns, even football pitches. Youve painted a pretty clear Picture Today about the impact of an unbalanced economy. Where is the clear strategy . I do think that, in all fairness, there was at least the skeleton of what to do. Perhaps the most important Thing Youve got to achieve is youve got to Restore A local sense of Pride And Ambition and self expectation. Half an hour away, nuneaton is one of the towns receiving money to regenerate. Like many, it bears the scars of recent decline, made worse by the pandemic. Shop ownerjo says any Boost Cant come too soon. The need to start doing it, and notjust putting a plaster on it. I mean, its all right to just patch it up and move on, and then somebody else take over, its got to be a 20 30 year plan. At this local Training Centre for young job seekers, the idea of investment in skills and business is welcome. But with many young people struggling, they need support soon. I must have applied for about 60 jobs in a month, two months, and you rarely hear back from anyone. Its really on a Knife Edge for a lot of people, and i think the government really does need to understand the severity of these barriers, and a real understanding of the Nitty Gritty of it, you know, the day to day issues. Get out on the streets and see whats happening. The Prime Minister said he wanted to hand powers from westminster to local leaders, who know their communities, an idea broadly welcomed, but, like much of this, the devil will be in the detail. Borisjohnson s made big plans to improve peoples lives across the country, and politically, hes got a Lot Riding on it. The Labour Leader in blackpool, working on his own offerfor the country, was dismissive. The words Levelling Up with no substance are not going to get us anywhere. Theyre no substitute for a regional strategy that brings money, resource, infrastructure, skills, all together around a regional plan. That is what labour would do. Back in nuneaton, perhaps the only measure of success for many will be when they feel a Material Difference in their own lives. Alex forsyth, Bbc News, warwickshire. Well, we can speak now to the former conservative education secretary, justine greening. Shes also a Joint Founder of the charity, the social Mobility Pledge. What did you make of the intention the Prime Minister set out in the practical hurdles for turning that into a levelled up country . I practical hurdles for turning that into a levelled up country . I always welcome the into a levelled up country . I always welcome the prime into a levelled up country . I always welcome the Prime Minister into a levelled up country . I always welcome the Prime Minister giving | into a levelled up country . I alwaysl welcome the Prime Minister giving a speech and Levelling Up but the real challenge now he is two years into his premiership is for him to set out a very comprehensive plan on how he wants to go about Levelling Up britain. It was not a complex challenge and, as you started to get into in the package, different parts of the country will face very different challenges. If you are in rural areas it is probably very much about connectivity. If you are in urban areas it is much more about whether you have got affordable Housing And Access to opportunity so what you really needs to do a set out a national architecture, all the Work Weve been going through the social Mobility Pledge that businesses and universities have set out voting Levelling Up goals, education, and access to opportunity, the other things that make or break whether we can reach our potential around the digital divide, housing, health and well being, but in breaking down the Levelling Up challenge into distinct Levelling Up challenge into distinct Levelling Up challenge into distinct Levelling Up goals and we can start as a country to have plans to tackle each of them in turn and local regions, local communities can say which of these Levelling Up goals really will make the difference to us in closing the gaps between people who have access to opportunity and can get on in life and all of those who cant and i think its about having a national architect so that was not what we need to set out, i think, by the government that their local communities can tailor for their own particular local challenges. I think the other thing to say is its not just about government. A big part of the Levelling Up agenda has to be delivered by changing how businesses are. Whether or not they are very open to that wider talent, whether they are at the moving Ballad Rears that are there for a talent, whether they have really focused on making sure that, for example, people starting careers in lower skilled jobs dont get trapped in those low skilljobs and that the vendors is also the chance to progress into a proper career. Theres lots of different aspects of Levelling Up. Its complicated but we will succeed by breaking it down into these Levelling Up goals and having plans against each of them are measuring our progress. Im against each of them are measuring our progress against each of them are measuring our progress. Im interested in what our progress. Im interested in what ou said our progress. Im interested in what you said about our progress. Im interested in what you said about the our progress. Im interested in what you said about the need our progress. Im interested in what you said about the need for our progress. Im interested in what you said about the need for very you said about the need for very specific sets of plans or a structure for people to apply. How important is it to have something that specific if you want to drive an ambitious reform like this to the machinery of government . Because a lot of ministers in the past have talked about the frustrations they found with what they saw and some people have a more Pejorative Term for it, i would almost call It Inertia in the system that sometimes that actually is what really scuppers it. Do you need that kind of structure in order to be able to overcome that inertia . I of structure in order to be able to overcome that inertia . Of structure in order to be able to overcome that inertia . I think you do because. Overcome that inertia . I think you do because. In overcome that inertia . I think you do because, in a overcome that inertia . I think you do because, in a sense, overcome that inertia . I think you do because, in a sense, its overcome that inertia . I think you do because, in a sense, its aboutj do because, in a sense, its about moving away from this Tower Of Babel where everyones got their own language and their own priorities saying actually, collectively, weve agreed that there are two priorities for britain. Ones net zero, planet, the other is love and look people and therefore every Government Department needs to look through those two lenses and say, what is our contribution to that national agenda . And that then can line up with all the work that im doing, for example, with businesses, with universities, with civil society, and, actually, its bringing all that together that is how we will really get change on the ground and recognising that different parts of our system, recognising that different parts of oursystem, if recognising that different parts of our system, if i can call it that, have different roles to play in different leadership in it but you are not going to get change on the ground unless you manage this complexity and start to break it down so that we can really take each part in turn and tackle it. Is down so that we can really take each part in turn and tackle it. Part in turn and tackle it. Is there a risk that part in turn and tackle it. Is there a risk that a part in turn and tackle it. Is there a risk that a prime part in turn and tackle it. Is there a risk that a prime Minister Part in turn and tackle it. Is there a risk that a Prime Minister in part in turn and tackle it. Is there | a risk that a Prime Minister in this and that he has kind of nailed his colours so firmly to the mast on this and yet, she said, it is an incredibly difficult thing to achieve. It may be an admirable thing to do but actually putting into practice, loss of the statistics show, because they havent shifted four years and years and years suggest it might become a kind of, too big a nut crack, certainly in one term. It kind of, too big a nut crack, certainly in one term. Certainly in one term. It is a longterm certainly in one term. It is a longTerm Agenda certainly in one term. It is a longTerm Agenda but certainly in one term. It is a longTerm Agenda but i certainly in one term. It is a. LongTerm Agenda but i dont certainly in one term. It is a longTerm Agenda but i dont believe long Term Agenda but i dont believe it is too big nut to crack. The reason that its almost this Status Quo In Britain Of Inequality of opportunity is because you need a system fix. I mean, were talking about shifting how this country works today to look a very different version of itself and that means not taking things in a piece piecemeal fashion with Ad Hoc quality here and there, it means government collectively working on the same agenda but then marrying that up with whats happening outside of government. Then, actually, as a permissible sing today, understanding that you have to have a Play Space Lens and all of this which is different parts of the country will face different Levelling Up challenges. But that was not why you need this common architecture that we can use everywhere but can be tailored to what particular regions and communities have as particular Levelling Up challenges and i think thats the route through, and it is complicated, are shown. It is why successive governments have had good intentions on closing these gaps but failed and i am afraid government across the Board And Politics needs to up its game on delivering complex change, but it can do that by having a much more systematic approach and being prepared to work more carefully with businesses and universities and charities who are outside of westminster but absolutely determined to also achieve the same goals. Justine greening. Achieve the same goals. Justine greening. Good achieve the same goals. Justine greening, good to achieve the same goals. Justine greening, good to talk achieve the same goals. Justine greening, good to talk to achieve the same goals. Justine greening, good to talk to you. I greening, good to talk to you. Thanks very much. I think the way he expressed himself, he said, is not fair and himself, he said, is not fair and also he said if we lost definitely he said some sort of abuse is going to be online, that will come, and i think the whole of the thing, the way things are happening, i think shock my kids so my reaction is whats happening is as a mum and as a black mum i have to do something because if i dont do anything means that im accepting the situation so, to be honest, i didnt expect to be talking to you and thank you so much for that because ijust put how i felt and i have to mention another thing on tuesday, the way the letter came off is that in the beginning i didnt want to say anything but on Tuesday Night i rang a Running Group from reading and we were walking and running in a group of Friends Of Mine and all of them they are white Friends Of Mine and i was telling them how i felt so everything i wrote i was talking to them and they said to me, i think you should write about this. Because i said, to be honest, i dont read dell might want to really take something on the media because i dont want to affect my business in just the whole of the thing coming to my head but they said i think whatever you tell us i think you have to posit and i said to myself may be if i write a letter for the mums because i know how they felt, you know, when people are abusing their own son because the mums, like i said, you know, have a son who is 21, six foot tall, good looking boy, you know. Just like when he walked i know people will look at him and just see him as a black boy and i think i was worried for my son when he was in london. I thought somebody could attack him but he saw something happening that light and when he come home he was so happy and i was waiting for him to come home and i think the reason i did it for my kids, for my grandchildren plus, you know, all the black boys out there and i think i need to do that. You dont want and i think i need to do that. You dont want their and i think i need to do that. You dont want their mums and dads feeling whether they are going to get home safely at night. We dream of a world where All Of Us are treated with the same love and and people understand that we are just as fully human as them. Someday, we will stop being scared for our kids when they go out on an evening. We willjust keep them and wish them a happy time. We will stop same be careful, watch out. Some day we will stop being scared for our kids just because they are black. Your boys are amazing. Such skill, talent, courage and dignity. Thank you for raising them this way. They inspired my children and me and together with us they will bring radical positive change to this world. This i wrote to the mums for the three boys. Thats is a very moving sentiment and obviously heartfelt from being a mum yourself. Lets of these messages do through. Thank you wrote very much for talking to us tonight. Instagram has admitted a mistake and its technology meant racist comments and emojis were not removed and mistakenly marked as within guidelines and have not been addressed. Now we have the weather and i have to say, nothing as extreme as has been injured in germany in last 2a hours hello there. We got quite a long spell of settled weather coming our way as we look at the weather for the rest of the week, the weekend even into the early stage of next week. Sunshine today in the highlands looking lovely there in cromarty, and it has been across the North And West that weve seen the best these are the minimum temperatures by The End of the night, 15 there in belfast and in liverpool as well. So, quite a warm start to the day on friday. Much more in the way of sunshine for central and eastern england but a bit more cloud for the North West of scotland, could bring an odd Passing Spot of rain. For most of us though, its a fine and sunny day, temperatures a little bit higher generally. 2a in aberdeen, 23 for belfast but 26s for birmingham, cardiff and for london. The fine, sunny weather for most of us staying throughout the weekend. Its getting hotter and by sunday, we could see temperatures in the south reach 30 celsius. Thats your latest weather. Hello this is Bbc News with me, shaun ley. The headlines. Police say at least 58 people have died after being missing from fighting in germany. The negativity will not break Bukayo Saka speaking out after racist abuse received after missing penalties and the Euro 2020 files also criticising Social Media Companies. Latest figures show 40,553 new Coronavirus Infections in the uk and 63 deaths within 28 days of a positive test, the highest number of deaths reported in one day since march. Borisjohnson has insisted his plans for covering up communities are a Win Win for the whole of the uk. He says he wont make richer areas poorer. And the open Golf Championship returns after a two year gap, 30,000 people enjoying the action out at royal Saint Georges in kent. Borisjohnson is Boris Johnson is appeared borisjohnson is appeared to pour hot water Cold Water on a text going for a tax on Salt And Sugar. He says some tax would the report said that it would encourage healthierfood. Halfare said that it would encourage healthier food. Half are living with obesity. One and three children are overweight. Poor diet contributes to 64,000 deaths a year in england alone. Before the pandemic, Obesity Related Illnesses accounted for about 5 of nhs englands annual spend. The government says it will closely look at the findings of Todays Report, but the Prime Minister says he is not attracted to extra taxes on ha rd working people. Danny savage has been to a farm near driffield in yorkshire. Farming gets a lot of attention this report. One proposal is to have less livestock for meat like this Beef Cattle behind me. Farmers are not happy neither is a large part of the Food Industry but there is a feeling from the people behind the report that they must get on with this because time is running out to make important changes. Too many of us dont have the right food into our bodies. We need to change to improve our health and save the planet. One of the suggestions is that gps can prescribe Fruit And Veg. This isnt a food bank, it is Fruit And Veg on social prescription. Doctors refer patients to this charity which hands out healthy Food And Advice on better living. From the point of referral we assess a persons needs, assess what it is they need support with. We aim to reduce gp consultations, reduce hospitalisations and try and tackle in a holistic way, how to help people improve their health and well being. Maureen is one person who has benefited from the social prescription service. You need variety and it is the variety that costs. I could pay for it, but it means something else has to go and it means we go In The Red instead of staying in the black and i cannot cope with the worry of being In The Red. This new report says our reliance on processed food contributes to Tens Of Thousands of deaths a year. We, as a Nation Love this sort of food, it has ingredients to make them irresistible. But this report says we have got to eat less of it and get out of the junk food cycle. Thats is nothing new, but are we finally prepared to make that change . There have been 14 previous Obesity Plans in this country and almost all of them have been voluntary measures. You will not break this junk food cycle, the interaction between our appetite and the commercial incentive of companies, unless you tackle it directly. Some argue that the recent Sugar Tax on soft drinks did work, it made manufacturers put less sugar in their products. Now attacks on Salt And Sugar in food is being suggested. But borisjohnson says he is not attracted to a greater Tax Burden on consumers, neither is the Food Industry. Not only will it not encourage companies to reformulate, more importantly it is going to add £180 to the price of the average shopping basket. It is time to take Food Education seriously as well, says the report. This man teaches Food Tech in coventry and peoples call him chef, not so. Pupils call him chef. One young lad said, you dont put Rubbish Petrol in a ferrari, do you . I thought that summed it up. We have to respect these amazing bodies we have and that is why it is so important we give our young people the tools to make the right choices. Because when you do give them the tools, most of the time they do make brilliant choices. A big part of Todays Report addresses farming. It says too much land is used for livestock to produce meat. They are just about to go off for processing. These are Beef Cattle . Yes. It recommends our Meat Consumption is cut by 30 within a decade. I think they will be hugely sceptical. I think a lot of farmers will stand behind the eat less, but eat better. I think Thats Something we can do in the uk. We are net importers, so all farmers will be looking at, are you going to apply this to the imports . This isntjust another report into our diets and lifestyle, this is potential future government policy. It could be the start of a huge change in our lives. Danny savage, Bbc News. Lets return to the devastating floods in germany which have so far killed 58 people. Malika fachrou is a journalist in dusseldorf, West Germany. Thank you for talking to us. Can you describe what seems you have seen during the course of today, what sort of conditions people are having to clear up . As you see behind me there is the river which is unusually high and dangerously high and we have a number of rivers and west of germany that have reached a high level and houses who have been close to these rivers have all been swamped, in the basements people have had to evacuate, some have had to go to the roof, in the back we have trees that have been collapsing. Even the day after, the images are very devastating. I have been caught by the Floods Yesterday with my sister, a way that takes five minutes took 20 minutes because we could not take the car and we would drown. I have been up the street talking to people who have been affected by the floods. They have no access to leave their homes without walking through knee deep water. And it has been a surprise for the whole country. Band surprise for the whole country. And what about surprise for the whole country. And what about the surprise for the whole country. And what about The Other Side beyond there, the areas we cannot see out of shot . How much damage is going to have to be cleared up . That of shot . How much damage is going to have to be cleared up . Have to be cleared up . At the moment. Have to be cleared up . At the moment. Many have to be cleared up . At the moment, many people have to be cleared up . At the moment, many People Dontl have to be cleared up . At the moment, many people dont think about the damage that has to be cleared up but the financial damage, the focus on the Human Cost of things that have happened due to the floods in germany. As you mentioned earlier, Over50 Floods in germany. As you mentioned earlier, over 50 people have been reported to be dead, seven people are still missing and germany has also deployed Military Forces in some parts of the west, i think around 200 to help and clear the mess off the streets. Fire and police officers, special work has been. ~. , police officers, special work has been. ,. ,. , been. What questions have been asked about been. What questions have been asked about the been. With flu as well as covid expected this winter, leading scientists have advised ministers to start planning ahead now. In the autumn, well have a lot more people getting symptoms of respiratory infections. So, that means youve got to have adequate capacity in the Test And Trace programme. Clashes were sparked by the jailing of the former president , jacob zuma, who had refused to appear at a corruption inquiry. But 27 years after The End of apartheid, theres also widespread anger over hardship and inequality. The worst violence in years has seen clashes in areas including Johannesburg And Durban from where Nomsa Maseko has sent this report. Residents of johannesburg protecting their livelihoods. Guarding against rioters and looters since the beginning of this week. In durban, checkpoints have been set up across the city. Hold it, hold it people are looking to protect themselves and their businesses from looting. People are hungry at the moment. People havent had an opportunity to stock up, so theyre really desperate. Theyre desperate for milk, food, for supplies for their kids. They dont have formula, they dont have nappies, theyre just really battling. Now that looting has died down, these fears over Food And Fuel shortages mean long queues outside shops and petrol stations. The Police Minister was in durban today. He admitted that the government should have put a stop to this much sooner. Is it not time for the South African government and the police to admit that you have failed this country . Indeed, as i am considering, that could have been better. Police were definitely overstretched. By the way, South African Police Service are not trained for war and times of complete eruption, they are not trained for that, hence the president will supplement and say, you go and assist them. 25,000 troops have now been promised, but there was very little evidence of this on the street here apart from the presence of a lone military Helicopter Circling above warehouses that were targeted three days ago. Things are a lot calmer today. People are out on the streets cleaning up but tensions are still high. I was chased away by armed residents at a checkpoint on that side of town. All i was trying to do was to take a picture to show you that that area had been running out of fuel, but they had a problem with that, saying that my presence there would alert looters to areas that have not been hit yet. Singing and chanting this could well be a Turning Point for South Africa, with many people asking themselves if the anc, in power since the dawn of south Africas Democracy in 1994, still holds the key to this countrys future prospects. I almost feel like im being treated like a bankrupt in some way, you know, that im being penalised that strongly for something that wasnt my fault. In lincolnshire, lisa says she cant get a mortgage because she was previously furloughed and works in hospitality. She is back full time, but is still being turned down by lenders. I just feel really unfairly penalised, if the truth be told. Furlough has been brilliant in that its protected myjob, because i would have lost that, but i didnt then expect to come out The Other Side, as you say, to have a deposit and no debt and all of the things that theoretically should make me an idealfirst time buyer, only to find out that banks and building societies just will not lend to me at all, so ijust feel really let down, really let down by it. The bbc asked all the major banks and building societies about their policies. Most of them dont accept Mortgage Applications from people currently on Furlough Or Wouldnt include furloughed income when looking at affordability. There are tighter rules for the 5 Million Self Employed too. Natwest and the royal bank of Scotland Wont even consider people who have taken out the Governments Self Employment grant in the last year. Others, like Metro Bank and santander, are asking for larger deposits. When the government announced this Support Package they did explicitly say that it wouldnt affect your Credit Score or your chances of getting a mortgage. In reality however, lenders and their underwriters are looking at it, and we have seen evidence that they are taking this into account and in some cases it is counting against people taking a mortgage. It is counting against people Uk Finance represents the industry. It is counting against people it told us lenders must carry out thorough income assessments to make sure mortgages are affordable in the long term. Decisions are made on a case by case basis. But there are concerns that people working in Hospitality And Travel are increasingly being seen as high risk. After months of waiting last may, ted was told a donor had been found. Up ted was told a donor had been found. Up until the operation, i had been struggling to climb the stairs at home without having to stop and take a breath, iwas home without having to stop and take a breath, i was was getting very worried. A four and a half billion year old meteorite was seen streaking across the sky, before crashing into a field in gloucestershire. Members of one Space Charity were given Special Permission to go searching for fragments, and theyre now recruiting scientists from around the world to help them analyse what they found. Our Science Correspondent Richard Westcott reports. From somewhere between the Orbits Ofjupiter and mars, to a muddy field in gloucestershire. These incredibly rare fragments of meteorite were found in a Horseshoe Print by derek here, a retired chemist and passionate astronomer, who was part of a Cambridge Team given Special Permission to search during lockdown. My dad died a few years ago, and at times of need i sometimes call out for his help and support. And just in the middle of the Field Ijust shouted out, come on, dad, help us to find the meteorite. And within half an hour i had come across this blue black stone. We knew straightaway it was a meteorite, a fresh meteorite. Ijust couldnt believe it. Hes brought one piece to his friend david, whose unique Sci Fi looking machines knock atoms off the sample so they can see what it is made of. Whats really interesting is the thing is that we havent seen, because we are not seeing anything lighter than carbon, or lithium, boron. Were not seeing anything heavier than nickel, things like gallium, arsenic, tin. There is an awful lot up there. And we dont see that. I keep trying to retire and winding down steadily. But when something like this comes along, it really stimulates the curiosity. And i can go back to my grandchildren and say, ive got a bit of meteorite in the back. Were going to look at that today. Isnt that interesting . Just up the road at loughborough university, derek has recruited more help. The Machine Shaun is using is magnifying the rock 18,000 times, producing these astonishing images that help them map the surface. Looking at the shape its incredibly and incredibly fragile. If you were to pick it up your hand, it could crumble. It is very dusty. The material itself is just loosely held together, almost like a talcum powder. Slightly moist. It is basically dust from the early universe. So it has been stuck in frozen time. It has never had the opportunity to coalesce, to form a body. Its just been a loose slump in space. Itsjust been a loose clump in space. He has been working with materials chemist sandie, another one of dereks friends. The minerals we are finding in the meteorite are similar to those that we find on earth but a little bit different. That tells us the chemistry up there in Outer Space is a bit different to what we see on terrestrial earth. Next, the Cambridge Team has offered samples to scientists in the us and germany. These tests could help answer a key question. Did some of the ingredients that are triggered Life On Earth arrive did some of the ingredients that triggered Life On Earth arrive on rocks from Outer Space . Richard westcott, Bbc News, loughborough. What a fascinating story that could tell. Now its time for a look at the weather with chris. Here in the uk, the same Jet Stream Pattern is building this area of high pressure. Weve had plenty of sunshine across most of parts of the uk today. The best of it arguably across the north and the west.
