At the 149th open, the gates have just opened at royal St Georges. The first golfers tee off in half an hour. And well reveal the total amount raised for Children In Needs 2020 campaign. Plus, it is a dry sense within state. Will it last for the next a0 days . We have at least got the prospect for the next five. Good morning. Its thursday, the 15th ofjuly. Our top story this morning is a call for Sugar And Salt taxes to be introduced in england, to improve the nations health. A landmark report, commissioned by the government, says the money raised by the levy should be used to extend the free school Meals Programme and pay for gps to prescribe Fruit And Vegetables. Ellie price has more. Its just what the doctor ordered, but not what you might expect. Cathy runs the charity care merseyside, involved in whats called social prescribing. Patients are referred by their local gp, and then offered things like Exercise Support and Cooking Advice here. They also provide healthy food to low income families from the point of referral, we assess a persons needs. We assess what it is they need support with, and we offer them a various range of levels of support. So what we aim to do is to reduce gp consultations, to reduce hospitalisations and to try and tackle in a holistic way, how to help people improve their health and well being. Maureens got a number of physical and Mental Health issues, and has used the local Prescribing Service in different ways. Todays report recommends the government tries out projects like this across the country, with the aim to improve Peoples Health and reduce the cost to the nhs of treatment. I try not to get emotional, but i find it very difficult to manage. If we had an Ideal Amount of Fruit And Veg in our diet, it would be easier to create stuff. Stuff that was easy to eat. You need Varietx Stuff that was easy to eat. You need varietx it stuff that was easy to eat. You need varietx it is stuff that was easy to eat. You need variety. It is the variety that costs variety. It is the variety that costs i variety. It is the variety that costs. I could pay for it but it means costs. I could pay for it but it means something else has to go, and it means means something else has to go, and it means we means something else has to go, and it means we go In The Red instead of staying it means we go In The Red instead of staying in it means we go In The Red instead of staying in the black. Now i cant cope staying in the black. Now i cant cope with staying in the black. Now i cant cope with the worry of being In The Red. Todays report says a poor diet contributes to 6a,000 deaths every year in england alone, and costs the economy an estimated £7A Billion. Theres an environmental impact too globalfood production is the second biggest contributor to climate change. The report recommends a tax on sugary and Salty Foods. If producers dont change their recipes to use less, it could mean a Price Increase of 15 to 25 for Dessert Biscuits and sweets. The report also calls for Food Education in schools to be taken more seriously. Thats exactly what andrew hartshorn, a teacher in coventry, is already trying to do. And by the way, his students dont say yes, sir, they say yes, share. This has got to be a sustained effort with lots of support across the country, support in the classroom, helping fund ingredients, ensuring its place on the curriculum, ensuring its place in the timetable is safeguarded. It needs to be supported for our parents at home, so theyre able to access ingredients. The national Food Strategy estimates its recommendations would cost around £i. A billion a year, and bring in up to £3. A billion a year in Tax Revenue for the reports author. The cost of doing nothing would be terrible damage to the environment and to our bodies. Ellie price, Bbc News. The government has defended the decision to put Majorca And Ibiza on the Amber List for travel, just two weeks after they were moved to green. It means that, from Monday Morning, most holidaymakers returning to the uk from the Spanish Islands will have to isolate for ten days unless theyre fully vaccinated. Andrew walker reports. A warm mediterranean beach is a tempting prospect for many after more than a year of restrictions. Some saw the spanish Balearic Islands as an appealing choice for a summer getaway. But the changes announced by the government will cause problems for some, like medy, whos due to fly to New York at the weekend. Iv e ive had one vaccine three weeks ago. I know from monday. However, i will need to quarantine, and thats not great for my Mental Health, but im very lucky i can work from home. Infection rates have doubled on the island since they were added to the green Watch Listjust over two weeks ago. The Government Traffic Light system puts countries with the least severe covid situations into the green category. No quarantine is required for returning travellers. Bulgaria and Hong Kong are being added. Then theres the green Watch List, which is a warning that the country is at risk of moving to the next category, which is amber. Adult travellers have to quarantine for ten days from monday. From monday, that will no longer apply to those who are fully vaccinated. Many young people arent, so they will be affected as the Balearic Islands moves to amber. And for Red List countries, quarantine in a special hotel is required. Indonesia and cuba are being added. And from the government, a warning that further changes to the lists are possible. I think we all know by now that travelling at the moment is not the same as it was before there was a global pandemic. And it does mean that when people book, particularly if youre booking to a green Watch List country, you need to make sure you can get your money back. You need to make sure you can reach your accommodation whenever required. The changes come into force at aam on monday. They will also apply in wales and scotland. Northern ireland is expected to follow suit, though it will be a further week before the Abolition Exemption from quarantine for fully vaccinated adults applies there. Andrew walker, abc news. Scientists are warning that the nhs could be pushed to Breaking Point this winter, by the threat from three respiratory viruses, including covid. A report from the Academy Of Medical Sciences says action is needed now to prevent that, and calls for extra Staff And Capacity in the Health Service. Here 5 our Health Correspondent Catherine burns. Empty streets and deserted Stations Lockdown was our first defence in the pandemic, as people stayed at home to stop covid spreading. At the same time, it prevented us catching other viruses, too. But as were about to ease into something closer to life as normal, researchers are worried that we could see a resurgence in flu cases this winter. A reasonable worst Case Scenario would be about two times more cases than normal enough to potentially see Tens Of Thousands of extra deaths. Theyre also concerned that the burden from rsv, another virus that often affects children and the elderly, could double too. Winter is always a pressurised time for the nhs, and thats before considering covid and the Record Backlog of patients waiting for treatments. But researchers say much depends on what we do between now and then. So, as well as covid, theyre calling for tests for Flu And Rsv at the same time, arguing that the technology exists and itsjust a question of logistics. Its very important to be able to identify when youve got several different viruses transmitting at the same time, which one it is that people have got. And if you can do that, of course, you can look after them better. Another recommendation is to prioritise vaccines. Whether for a covid, any whetherfor a covid, any possible boosterjabs in the autumn, or Flu Vaccines for anybody eligible. The report also stresses the importance of making sure people can afford to isolate if theyre infected. But theres a lot of focus too, on what people can do to help themselves and others. Because the steps weve taken to protect ourselves from covid like masks, social distancing and fresh air, can only help with other respiratory viruses too. Catherine burns, Bbc News. Its a really safe system where they can exit the report quickly and not alert the perpetrator to what they are reporting. Good morning. High pressure is firmly centred across the uk at the moment and it is looking dry and settled for the rest of this week and into the start of next. Its not going to be sunny all the time, in fact todays looking cloudier and a Touch Cooler than it was yesterday. It is a mild start to the morning, temperatures in the mid teens in celsius. There is a bit of cloud out there already and we will see some bright and sunny spells this morning and then The Cloud is set to thicken at times into the afternoon. Because its a cloudy day, it will feel cooler with Temperatures Peaking this time in the low 20s in celsius. We still have that northerly to North Westerly wind blowing too. Through the evening and overnight we will see a lot of that cloud break up to give us a more clear spells and overnight lows of around 13 or 15 degrees, so a mild start to the day on friday. Friday, a lot more in the way our Blue Sky and sunshine, this time throughout the day, and it is set to feel warm up with temperatures widely peaking around the Mid 20s In Celsius and some spots out towards the Western Parts of the capital and into Central London itself may be 26 or 27 celsius. A tax on Sugar And Salt in processed food is one of the suggested measures in a government commissioned report designed to improve the health of the nation. It also says we should be eating less meat, and teaching children more about healthy eating. Ben is on a farm near leeds for us this morning, and can tell us more. Yes. Welcome to a glorious start on the day in leeds, and meet rocky the bull. We are looking at some of the implications of the report published today, and you are quite right. So many different takeaways as far as the Farming Industry is concerned but also as consumers. What does it mean for the way we buy and consume food, and particularly things like meat. Let me run you through some of the headlines because it is suggested we shoot eat list Sugar And Salt we should eat less Sugar And Salt we should eat less Sugar And Salt we should eat less Sugar And Salt and it proposes a tax so it makes manufacturers with a more expensive price to buy those and it will pass that onto us to make it more expensive. The second is we should eat less meat. So of this stuff. And its also calling for much better education as to where the food comes from as there is so much disconnect as people are not aware of where their Milk Or Meat comes from and in places like this on farms, that is so important. What will the industry do and how will they respond and what are the implications, and particularly, we have talked about imports of may be cheap meat from overseas which is one of the big negotiating issues as far as the Brexit Referendum was concerned. The report published this morning is so, so important. Apologies there, the technical gremlins have gone into Bens Camera and although the sunshine is that we will fix all of that and be back with ben later in the programme. Always very frustrating. See the frustration from ben. It is so annoying because you have such a lovely location in such an important story to tell and then the technical gremlins happen, but we will sort them out and be back later. Lets talk more about this with lindsay boswell, whos Chief Executive of the Food Waste Charity fareshare. So people understand, you are a Food Waste Charity, so you provide fresh and in Date Food that might otherwise go to waste to Community Groups and thats the area you work in. What are the issues that you think these national Food Strategy should address, directly related to what you do . Should address, directly related to what ou do . ,. , what you do . Good morning, charlie and first of all, what you do . Good morning, charlie and first of all, as what you do . Good morning, charlie and first of all, as youre what you do . Good morning, charlie and first of all, as youre outbreak. And first of all, as youre outbreak outside broadcaster said, this is an incredibly important report and it cuts across a whole range of different areas and the Areas Charlie was talking about, but also tackles issues that we are really concerned about one is the issue of Food Waste. If Food Waste was a country would be the third largest Greenhouse Gas Emitter after china and the united states and at a time when we are all aware of what the future holds on climate change, sorting that out is massively important. 0nly sorting that out is massively important. Only a tiny bit of this report is diverting this food to where it can do the most social good, which is connecting people who are vulnerable with local services that can help them on that but the story is much bigger than that and there is a particular reference around a piece of work that Marcus Rashford has taken a lead on, which is around trying to make sure that no child goes hungry because a child who is hungry does not learn and if you remove the opportunity to learn, we are failing that child and that Childs Ability to play a role in society for the whole of its life. So that is unbelievably important and what the report is calling for is that we have an expansion of the free school Meals Programme and an expansion of the Summer Holiday and also easter and christmas time Holiday Activity programmes and i know the headline will be about the Salt And Junk food and making that more expensive, but if that is put into place then that additional cost will pay for all of the measures in henry s report, and Henry Dimbleby, and the team around him have done an amazing job. This is the most important set of changes into how we live our lives and that has happened in my lifetime and the government really does need to take notice of this. ,. ,. , this. Help me with this one, because the only thing this. Help me with this one, because the only thing that this. Help me with this one, because the only thing that matters this. Help me with this one, because the only thing that matters here i this. Help me with this one, because the only thing that matters here is i the only thing that matters here is that something changes and something happens and this is a report on the government looks at it and then comes up with what they plan by way of response and im only assuming that because of the work you are involved in, you must, over the years, let alone months, have been hugely frustrated that the things you know about children, for example, going hungry, and the need to get food from one place to another that is not being used, you know that for a long time. Its happening today comments happening tomorrow and when i look at this report, surely you do something now because its everyday that some child, somewhere is not getting the food it get elsewhere. Food it get elsewhere. Completely. You have got food it get elsewhere. Completely. You have got it food it get elsewhere. Completely. You have got It Spot food it get elsewhere. Completely. You have got It Spot on. Food it get elsewhere. Completely. You have got It Spot on. 64,000 i you have got It Spot on. 6a,000 people will die as a result of poor diet this year. 6a,000 people, and we have to stop that. This is costing the country, the economy, £7A Billion every single year and the other prediction, which is not henrys, this is the science, if we keep eating badly as a result of obesity, the cost of diabetes in just 12 years time, so by the time the euros comes around three more times in 12 years, that will cost the nation more than £15 Million, which is a staggering sum of money and we will be spending more on diabetes then than we are on all Cancer Treatments now. We cant afford this, we cant afford to keep feeling bad food to people. We cannot vote out children who go hungry and we can afford to destroy the planet in the way we are doing. There are so many different moving parts to this that it needs, and its almost like when bevan and the nhs, as a country, we need a complete fresh approach. Flan nhs, as a country, we need a complete fresh approach. Can i ust ask ou, complete fresh approach. Can i ust Ask You. And complete fresh approach. Can i ust askyou. And r complete fresh approach. Can i ust Ask You, and i know i complete fresh approach. Can i ust Ask You, and i know you i complete fresh approach. Can i ust Ask You, and i know you dont i complete fresh approach. Can ijust Ask You, and i know you dont want j Ask You, and i know you dont want to get involved in the politics and quite rightly because you are involved in the practicalities but given what is now in the Public Domain in terms of this report and given what you have known from the past, is there any excuse for the government to not do something immediately, ahead of their overall report. Are there some things that could be done today, next week, that would dramatically affect things that should be done, regardless of the Greater Measures . Absolutely. In each of these the Greater Measures . Absolutely. In each of these areas the Greater Measures . Absolutely. In each of these areas there the Greater Measures . Absolutely. In each of these areas there are the Greater Measures . Absolutely. In each of these areas there are quick. Each of these areas there are quick wins that can be made. , and particularly one around making sure that no child goes hungry. The government has seen the public appetite for making that happen over the past year and they did react and credit where it is due, they put the Summer Holiday provision into place very very quickly but that was a one year programme. And they know that that works so they can make a quick announcement and say, yes, we will look at the whole of this in the round but we are going to focus on kids first and get that area sorted out as soon as possible. Really interesting to hear your thoughts this morning. And just by way of government response, the Environment Secretary George eustace said he would like to Thank Henry dimbleby and his team for their work on the independent review and the government will carefully consider its conclusions and respond with a White Paper within six months, setting out our priorities for the food system. Eight minutes ago, it began, mike. It began. Im so excited because we had a year most of this. The worlds oldest Golf 0pen of this. The worlds oldest golf open championship, supposedly the hundred and 50th this year but its not. It seems an age ago since Shane Lowry made this. You have the big names that cross the chances on the amateurs. All the chance of riding the headlines On Sunday night. After a two year wait, the open at royal St Georges, is finally underway, with the first round of golfers onto the first fairway. Theyll be watched by up to 32 Thousand fans each day, one its one of the Governments Test events, but despite the excitement, not all of the players are fans of this course, with its long rough and mountainous bunkers. Ben croucher has more. Teeing it up at last on the kentish coast. Better late than never. The open championship at royal St Georges is one of golf s most fearsome challenges, whether its the devilish rough, the swirling Sea Breeze or the undulating fairways and greens, the players are in for a bumpy ride. Its just not as exciting, i dont know why. Whether it be a couple of shots to nothing, a couple of blind. A couple of blind Tee Shots or shots where you cant see much, im not too big of a fan of that. Few tournaments, few courses provide such unpredictability. Take ben curtis, ranked 396th in the world when he won in 2003, or darren clarkes unexpected, emotional triumph a decade ago. The game has come a long way since then, and when the lies are uneven it means golf can be a real leveller. I think is ive got a little more experienced and matured, ive been able to play this championship a little bit better and hopefully i can continue that record this week. Its notjust the players who are happy to be back at St Georges this week. We have fans as well. 0ver each day of competition, over 32,000 will be in attendance. Its lovely to get out, isnt it . Its absolutely excellent. And the Practice Day is brilliant| because everything is up close. Its been really fun, actually, seeing so many faces. We saw Rory Mcilroy playing on the putting green which was, well, he was five metres in front of me. Its amazing, especially down in the South East, is fantastic and the weather is perfect. It looked like it was going to be raining and it is amazing. Its like to be here. Dont be fooled by the perfect location, there are hazards everywhere you look. For the man who will be the king of royal St Georges on Sunday Evening, he will have truly earned it. Ben croucher, Bbc News. Well, this was the moment, at 6. 35 on the dot, that Richard Bland, of england, hit the first Tee Shot. It looks like a little gazebo, orsomething. There. It looks like a little gazebo, or something. Yes, it is a trellis. A trellis gazebo, or something. Yes, it is a trellis. A Trellis Archway gazebo, or something. Yes, it is a trellis. A Trellis Archway or trellis. A Trellis Archway or something like that and welcome to gardeners question time, as it were, with the Vine Running over the top. Yes a Big Day to day and this is the reveal of the Children In Need total. We will tell you the number just after eight oclock this morning. We are at the Rainbows Hospice, a hospice for children and young people who look after people from babies, right up until people in their Mid 20s, offering all sorts of support, care, palliative care, of support, care, palliative care, of course, and they have ten beds here in normal times and during Covid Times you would expect ten young people to be supported here by theirfamilies but young people to be supported here by their families but they also have hundreds in the local community and when i say local community, that is right across the East Midlands, leicestershire, Nottinghamshire And Derbyshire and into lincolnshire as well. What the Children In Need of money does, as you are also aware with the history of Children In Need over the years that its been taking place that it funds projects, tangible projects in the money never disappears. We can always tell you through our reports every year exactly where the money goes and how it is helping the thousands and thousands of young people and their families across the uk and here it funds a member of staff, a Play Specialist who uses a therapeutic play to help the young children that are here and also sometimes to help with their siblings so it might be arts and crafts and it might help just to explain, especially sometimes to those other siblings, those young members of the family exactly what the families going through and it helps them them through and it helps them them through what is obviously an extremely difficult part of their lives. Children in need is a massive fixture in the Bbc Calendar and in many peoples lives every year. Last year we saw many peoples lives every year. Last year We Sanoe Wicks doing his exercise marathon, amazing money raised by countryfile by the Rickshaw Challenge and you will have been hula Hooping And Skipping and Cycling And Unicycling and baking cookies for pudsey and sitting in a bath of Baked Beans all to raise that money, and it is an impressive total and we will tell you all about it later on especially when you consider these were Covid Times and there are still covid restrictions so it is very difficult to raise as much money as you would have expected in normal years, but trust me, its a very, very impressive total and we will finance so much more about the work of this Place And Talk to a special young man who was supported by the hospice later in the programme after the News And Travel where you are this morning. Good morning, im sonja jessup. The met says more than 120 reports of domestic abuse have been made to its new online Reporting System, in just the three weeks since its launch. So far this year, 13 people have been killed as a result of Domestic Violence. Thats already higher than the whole of last year. Police hope the new online Reporting System will encourage victims to come forward. The data we are going to get from an online report, what is written, is often more than a phone call. Its a really safe system where they can exit the report quickly and not alert the perpetrator to what they are reporting. Detectives investigating the murder of a 16 year old boy in South London, are looking for a moped which may have been used in the attack. Demarie 0mare Roye was stabbed in Thornton Heath last friday. We still have problems on the 0verground due to flood damage. Theres no service between Euston And Kilburn high road. Other lines are running as normal. Time for the weather with elizabeth rizzini. Friday, a lot more in the way of Blue Sky and sunshine, this time throughout the day, and it is set to feel warm with temperatures widely peaking around the Mid 20s In Celsius and some spots out towards the Western Parts of the capital and into Central London itself may be 26 or 27 celsius. We will start to see some rather warm, sticky nights from friday onwards. It looks like a very summery weekend in store with the Heat Peaking On Sunday. Thats all for now. Im back in half an hour. Do Take A Look at our website too. Now its back to Naga And Charlie. Bye bye. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. 0ur headlines today. Golfs oldest major is under way. Richard bland of england hit the first Tee Shot of the 1a9th open championship. Plus, will the weather for the plus, will the weatherfor the rest of the summer be decided today . It is St Swithins day. For many it is dry and sunny. The full forecast later. Good morning. Its thursday, the 15th ofjuly. Our top story this morning is a call for Sugar And Salt taxes to be introduced in england to improve the nations health. Patients are referred by their local gp, and then offered things like Exercise Support and Cooking Advice. Here, they also provide healthy food to low income families. From the point of referral, we assess a persons needs. You need variety. It is the variety that costs. I could pay for it, but it means something else has to go, and it means we go In The Red instead of staying in the black. If producers dont change their recipes to use less, it could mean a Price Increase of 15 to 25 for desserts, biscuits and sweets. The report also calls for Food Education in schools to be taken more seriously. Thats exactly what andrew hartshorn, a teacher in coventry, is already trying to do. And by the way, his students dont say, yes, sir, they say, 0ui, chef. This has got to be a sustained effort with lots of support across the country, support in the classroom, helping fund ingredients, ensuring its place on the curriculum, ensuring its place in the timetable is safeguarded. It needs to be supported for our parents at home, so theyre able to access ingredients. The national Food Strategy estimates its recommendations would cost around £1. A billion a year, and bring in up to £3. A billion a year in Tax Revenue for the reports author. The cost of doing nothing would be terrible damage to the environment and to our bodies. Ellie price, Bbc News. The government has defended the decision to put Majorca And Ibiza on the Amber List for travel just two weeks after they were moved to green. But the changes announced by the government will cause problems for some, like medi, whos due to fly to majorca at the weekend. Ive had one vaccine three weeks ago. I know from Monday People who are double vaccinated dont need to quarantine when they return from Amber List countries. Adult travellers have to quarantine for ten days. From monday, that will no longer apply to those who are fully vaccinated. Many young people arent, so they will be affected as the Balearic Islands moves to amber. And for Red List countries, quarantine in a special hotel is required. Four countries, including indonesia and cuba, are being added. We still have problems on the 0verground due to flood damage. No service between Euston And Kilburn high road. Other lines are running as normal. Time for the weather with elizabeth rizzini. Im back in an hour. Now its back to Naga And Charlie. Bye bye. Hello, this is breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. Lets get back to one of our top stories now, and the government has defended the decision to put Majorca And Ibiza on the Amber List for travel just two weeks after they were moved to green. It means that from Monday Morning most holidaymakers returning to the uk from the Spanish Islands will have to isolate for 10 days, unless theyre fully vaccinated. Lets talk you through some of the changes. Bulgaria and Hong Kong willjoin the green list meaning travellers will not need to quarantine on returning home, but will need to take a test. Croatia and taiwan move to whats called the green Watch List. That means they could change quickly to amber. These countries will all move to amber from monday. Which as weve heard, will mean those who are not fully vaccinated or under 18 will have to self isolate for 10 days when they arrive back in the uk. Finally, indonesia, myanmar, Sierra Leone and Cuba Willjoin the Red List of countries where travellers will have to quarantine for 10 days in a government approved hotel. All the changes will apply to travellers in england, scotland and wales. Northern ireland is still to update its Travel List. Lets talk to laura who is a restaurant manager. Good morning to you. I hope things are ok with you and i dare say the last 2a hours or so have been a bit stressful. Give me your thoughts about the changes that have come in. That have come in. Good morning. Weve waited a long time to go on holiday, and then we will deal with it when we go back. I think the youngsters, the younger generation, i dont know what their views are going to be on it, whether they have had their holiday booked for the summer and they wanted to come out. I suppose you and anyone involved in the tourist trade, the insecurity is the tourist trade, the insecurity is the problem, the notion that things can change quickly and how that might affect people planning ahead. Thats a thing, people look forward to their holidays and two weeks ago it was amazing the amount of people that just it was amazing the amount of people thatjust booked a flight and arrived on that day and said they booked up yesterday because they were given the go ahead. I almost feel i am being treated like a bankrupt in some way, that i am being penalised that strongly for something that was not my fault. In lincolnshire, lisa says she cant get a mortgage because she was previously furloughed and works in hospitality. She is back full time but is being turned down by lenders. I just feel really unfairly penalised, the truth be told. Furlough has protected myjob, because i would have lost that. But i didnt then expect to come out of The Other Side, to have a deposit and no debt, and all of the things that theoretically should make me an idealfirst time buyer, only to find out that banks and building societies just will not lend to me at all. I just feel really let down, really let down by it. The bbc asked all the major banks and building societies about their policies. Most of them dont accept Mortgage Applications from people currently on furlough, or wouldnt include furloughed income when looking at affordability. There are rules for the Five Million Self Employed too. Natwest and the royal bank of Scotland Wont even consider people who have taken out of the Governments Self Employment grant in the past year. Others like Metro Bank and santander are asking for larger deposits. When the government announced its Support Package, they did explicitly say it wouldnt affect your Credit Score or your chances of getting a mortgage. In reality, however, lenders and their underwriters are looking at it. And we have seen evidence they are taking this into account. And in some cases it is counting against people taking a mortgage. Uk finance represents the industry. It told us lenders must carry out thorough income assessments to make sure mortgages are affordable in the long term. Decisions are made on a case by case basis. There are concerns that people working in Hospitality And Travel are increasingly being seen as high risk. These companies were ordered to close their doors. They couldnt work and of course they had to take that Money And Support that was offered by government. Now the pandemic is ending they are finally being told that actually, there are potentially long term consequences for that, they may not be able to borrow, they may not get a mortgage, they may not be able to buy A House. Lisa says she may have to spend a big chunk of a deposit on finding a new property to rent. I genuinely feel the opportunity to own My Own Home has gone and its devastating. And millions of people who took Covid Support, or grants, are facing tougher rules from lenders. Sarah corker, Bbc News. Quite a lot of talk about the weather, matt, and look at you with your Golf Course under Blue Skies and your no Sea Breezes. Explain all. See breezes developed during the day and this is just a see breezes developed during the day and this isjust a general see breezes developed during the day and this is just a general northerly wind but a lovely scene across sandwich at the course, close to the coast and not much in a way of shelter which is why the breeze is key for the golfers over the next few days with a brisk one coming in from the North East but the breeze will ease down and whether you are in the breeze or not there will be strong Sunshine Overhead so bear it in mind if you are heading off to the gulf in the next few days and indeed anywhere across the uk there will be strong sunshine around through the rest of the week and into the weekend and temperatures will be on the rise as well because of this area of High Pressure from the South West will push in but not quite with us which is why we have the northerly breeze down the eastern areas and we have weather fronts toppling down bringing some cloud. A cloudy star in Northern Ireland in North West wales. We will see sunny spells but we will see more cloud develop compared to the sunny conditions most of you have gone there will still be cloud down the eastern coast and there will be thick cloud in the Western Isles which could bring drizzle. Temperatures are 2425 degrees around aberdeenshire and the Lake District and South East wales, the highest temperatures, and a Bit Cooler down the breezy eastern coast and it remains in place through the South East and a bit breezy to the North West of scotland with rain and here we will see lots of cloud over the next few days but in between, clear skies into the Night And Morning and may be temperatures into single figures for one or two of you but it should be a nice enough start for tomorrow. This is the chart for friday with high Pressure Nudging in a cloud on it to show how it drifts around the western and northern edge and continues to push into the North West of scotland are elsewhere The Cloud will break up, lots more in the way of sunshine around for many with a bit of fair Weather Cloud in the afternoon and brightening up towards east anglia and the South East after a cloudy start and the breeze easing down a little bit. It could get warmer across eastern parts of scotland and temperatures rising across the south of england and wales which could get to 26 or 27 degrees. Heading into the weekend a High Pressure more firmly established and around the top we will see cloud, patchy rain across the highlands, and cooler here compared to elsewhere with temperatures of down across scotland compared for the next few days but will continue to climb across central and southern and eastern england between 27 or 28 and 29 and as we going to sunday the High Pressure is still firmly with us and the weather fronts will bring further cloud and patchy rain and there will be sunshine at times particularly for Orkney And Shetland and a Cooler Day for scotland and Northern Ireland with increasing cloud but by sunday we could see the Peak Of the heat and 30 degrees as possible and some warm nights to come as well. For more than 70 years, doctors and nurses have been coming to britain from overseas to serve in the nhs. Without them the service would have been in danger of collapse. In his new film, the Historian David Olusoga says that all too often health workers found themselves healing with one hand, while fending off discrimination with the other. Lets Take A Look. May i come in . Certainly, nurse, excuse the dustpan, im just clearing up the mess in the sitting room. As a black nurse, when you knocked on the door, you would be told in earlier days, nothing is wrong with me, i dont want you. And youd get the door shut in your face. They would physically also hit you, and hit your hand, and say, i dont want you to touch me with your dirty blackness that will rub off. And they are not used to having black people coming to their homes, are they . Next week, i will come back. I knock on the door. And i will say, well, im only here to make sure youre all right. Are you all right . Yes. The door is closed. I go away. When i rang my mother, i said i couldnt stand this place and people were so racist and rude and horrible, and she said, if they are racist to you, that is their problem, not yours. You know, so get over it. And when im coming back the next week, i might come with a couple of buns in my Hand Or Something like that, or a couple of sprigs of flowers, or something, but, well, you better come in then. I stood up in the Ward And Ijust said, i am so fed up of this, you people. I said, i know that i am black. I have been black for 21 years, so tell me something i dont know. And there was silence. David olusoga joins us now from bristol. Sadly, we have not seen the whole film, butjust hearing the voices of those remarkable ladies, it stops you in your tracks a little bit about what they went through then and how they carried on regardless. Yes, and you have to remember that these are very young women who have made an astonishing decision, they have decided to leave their homes, to travel thousands of miles to take on an extremely difficultjob, very difficult training, very difficult conditions, and to do so, in many cases, because of belief in this thing called the nhs and the idea of Health Care for, so when you think about the scale of the decision they made and the sacrifices they were willing to make and in many cases their treatment, there is a terrible mismatch, isnt there . The their treatment, there is a terrible mismatch, isnt there . Mismatch, isnt there . The fact is that there was mismatch, isnt there . The fact is that there was this mismatch, isnt there . The fact is that there was this phrase, mismatch, isnt there . The fact is that there was this phrase, and i mismatch, isnt there . The fact is i that there was this phrase, and good morning, david, with one hand they were healing and with the other they were healing and with the other they were fending off discrimination, and as we heard, violence as well, very offensive, angry words and violence and i wonder how much care was taken for them by the institutions at that time because the nhs needed them. I think one of the big breakthroughs of recent years and recent months is the idea that many people agree with that the job of combating racism and discrimination is not thejob of just people of colour alone, but that Attitude Wasnt there in the 19405 and 19505 and 605 and 70s when the nurses were training im coming to britain and starting their careers, so the presumption was that they just careers, so the presumption was that theyjust needed to get on with it and racism was just a fact of Life And Racism was just a fact of life and it was their issue and they had to deal with it and there was very little support. Did to deal with it and there was very little smart little support. Did it surprise you at all . My little support. Did it surprise you at all . My parents little support. Did it surprise you at all . My parents were little support. Did it surprise you at all . My parents were nurses i little support. Did it surprise you i at all . It didnt. Ive spoken to lots of nurses did it surprise you . It didnt. Ive spoken to lots of nurses over did it surprise you . It didnt. Ivej spoken to lots of nurses over the years and ive heard about those early decades in the nhs. I think what surprised me, how many people, doctors and nurses, from the caribbean, the indian subcontinent, came to britain not because they wanted to be british and live here, they came to britain because they had heard of this thing called the nhs and they had heard of this almost miraculous phenomenon where people were treated not based on how much money they had put on the need they had for medical care, and people from all over the well came to britain to be part of the nhs because they believed in the principles of the nhs, and when you realise that the story of what the nhs is is being told all over the world and thousands of people have been here to be part of it, you realise how special the nhs is. I wonder to what extent you can bring this up to date. And as much as some things have not changed. The nhs still relies on people coming here from elsewhere to make the service work. That is still the case now. We have never work. That is still the case now. , have never generated a number of doctors and nurses and auxiliary staff we need to run the nhs and in some ways thats not entirely surprising. The nhs is notjust the biggest employer in britain, it is the biggest employer in europe, it is 1. 2 million people and of that 1. 2 million, 14 are from overseas or are minorities. They come from 200 different nations. Its an incredibly international national Health Service and its always been the case from its inception to the present day. It is needed to draw people in from all over the world and that story of immigration, the most vexed political issue of recent decades and the story of this most beloved national institution are intertwined. They are the same story. I always like the symmetry. Sometimes history rhymes, sometimes there are little patterns and i think it is significant that there were 12 days between the arrival of the windrush in 1948 and the start of the nhs in 1948, they are historically twins. Its of the nhs in 1948, they are historically twins. Of the nhs in 1948, they are historically twins. Its ironic when ou see historically twins. Its ironic when you see the historically twins. Its ironic when you see the story, historically twins. Its ironic when you see the story, ran historically twins. Its ironic when you see the story, ran fullcircle| you see the story, ran full circle when you see Conversations Brexit and foreign workers and the arguments about immigration, it has not gone away. It arguments about immigration, it has not gone away not gone away. It hasnt and i dont think we have not gone away. It hasnt and i dont think we have ever not gone away. It hasnt and i dont think we have ever understood not gone away. It hasnt and i dont think we have ever understood our| think we have ever understood our relationship with immigration. I dont think weve ever fully understood that that is half the story and there is also emigration. One of the reason that Britain And Nhs has been able to fill the post in the services because historically british doctors and nurses trained in british universities when they graduated and went to work in the us or canada or australia and not wanted to work in the nhs, so the reason for bringing people from all over the world is partly because of emigration, and that aspect, that side of the coin is almost never discussed and it is critical to understand with the nhs in post war britain. Understand with the nhs in postwar britain. , ~. , britain. David, can we talk about the football britain. David, can we talk about the football on britain. Im not sure if you watched the match or how you felt about it when i went to penalties and you are obviously very aware of the fallout because of the disgusting abuse levied at three of the black penalty takers. Millions of people, particularly black people, knew the moment of the penalties were missed or knew what was coming and the inevitability is extremely depressing, but i find it more depressing that the opportunities for politicians to condemn this four weeks ago when the tournament began were not taken, and i think politicians have to take some blame for what happened. Most british governments have found it within the heart to condemn racism since the 19605, and at this critical moment, our politicians did not. For whatever reason, politicians may be because they want to do the right thing, and in reality because it is the right thing to do, that something might change, and you are a historian, do you think historians like you might look back in the future and think, that thing happened and we saw something very ugly from the response afterwards. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. Our headlines today. A Snack Tax on sugary and salty food is proposed to help improve the nations health. Good morning. The report also calls for better education about where our food comes from and how it is produced. I am on a farm in leeds looking at what it could mean for the industry. The Spanish Islands of ibiza, majorca and menorca are moved back to the Amber List two weeks after going green. Golfs oldest major is back under Blue Skies. And with fans returning to royal St Georges, englishman Andy Sullivan is the early leader of the open on two under par with two birdies already, with another teed up at the fifth. And War And Peace Starjames Norton will tell us about his new film, playing a terminally ill man trying to find the perfect new family for his son. It is St Swithins day today. If you believe the folklore, what you have today you will have for the next 40 days. For most of you, it is dry and sunny. Good morning. Its thursday, the 15th ofjuly. Our top story this morning is a call for Sugar And Salt taxes to be introduced in england to improve the nations health. Patients are referred by their local gp, and then offered things like Exercise Support and Cooking Advice. Here, they also provide healthy food to low income families. From the point of referral, we assess a persons needs. You need variety. It is the variety that costs. I could pay for it, but it means something else has to go, and it means we go In The Red instead of staying in the black. Now i cant cope with the worry of being In The Red. Todays report says a poor diet contributes to 64,000 deaths every year in england alone, and costs the economy an estimated £74 Billion. Theres an environmental impact too globalfood production is the second biggest contributor to climate change. The report recommends a tax on sugary and Salty Foods. And by the way, his students dont say, yes, sir, they say, oui, chef. This has got to be a sustained effort with lots of support across the country, support in the classroom, helping fund ingredients, ensuring its place on the curriculum, ensuring its place in the timetable is safeguarded. It needs to be supported for our parents at home, so theyre able to access ingredients. The national Food Strategy estimates its recommendations would cost around £1. 4 Billion a year, and bring in up to £3. 4 Billion a year in Tax Revenue. For the reports author, the cost of doing nothing would be terrible damage to the environment and to our bodies. Ellie price, Bbc News. The government has defended the decision to put Majorca And Ibiza on the Amber List for travel just two weeks after they were moved to green. It means that, from Monday Morning, holidaymakers returning to the uk from the Spanish Islands will have to isolate for ten days, unless theyre fully vaccinated. Andrew walker reports. A warm mediterranean beach is a tempting prospect for many after more than a year of restrictions. Some saw the spanish Balearic Islands as an appealing choice for a summer getaway. But the changes announced by the government will cause problems for some, like medi, whos due to fly to majorca at the weekend. Ive had one vaccine three weeks ago. I know from Monday People who are double vaccinated dont need to quarantine when they return from Amber List countries. The changes come into force at 4am on monday. They will also apply in wales and scotland. Northern ireland is expected to follow suit, though it will be a further week before the Abolition Exemption from quarantine for fully vaccinated adults applies there. Andrew walker, abc news. But after a storming start of the week for some, conditions like this probably seemed quite appealing. This is the view in cumbria. A dry spell of weather to take us through the rest of the week into the weekend. A few exceptions, as there will be to the largely sunny story. For many it is going to turn a bit warmer if not hotter in the next few days. The exception to the next few days. The exception to the sunny story this morning is across parts of the far North And West of scotland. It is going to brighten up in Northern Ireland. We will see some sunshine. Some cloud feeding down the eastern coast. More cloud compared to yesterday across southern and central england, and compare to what we have at the moment. For most it will be Fine. There will be drizzled with The Cloud in the Western Isles later. Good sunny spells across much of mainland scotland. Temperatures into the Mid 20s. Mainland scotland. Temperatures into the mid 205. Low 20s for Northern Ireland when the sun breaks through. It could hit 25 degrees in cumbria, 25, 26 in the South East of wales. Cooler on the eastern coasts. A Breeze Blowing. That could be a challenge for some of the golfers in sandwich in east kent today. And indeed over the next few days. Quite breezy tonight with lots of cloud. Cloud to the North And West of the country. Clear spells elsewhere. Temperatures in single figures for a few of you tomorrow morning. For most the knights will get warmer in the next few days. And the days are certainly well at times as well. These are the temperatures. They drop a little bit across scotland and Northern Ireland. It gets hotter in england and wales, maybe 29, 30 celsius for some. Enjoy. And you, matt. The national Food Strategy report, commissioned by the government, says the money raised by the levy should be used to extend the free school Meals Programme and pay for gps to prescribe Fruit And Vegetables. We can speak now to the reports lead author, Henry Dimbleby. Thanks for being with us on a breakfast. We were chatting about this and it feels like we have spoken about this for a long time in this country, tackling Salt And Sugar levels in food and how it is affecting our health. What is different, no, what is not different, no, what is not different, but what will make a difference this time . We different, but what will make a difference this time . Different, but what will make a difference this time . We have to chan. E difference this time . We have to change the difference this time . We have to change the Way Difference this time . We have to change the way we difference this time . We have to change the way we think difference this time . We have to change the way we think about L Difference this time . We have to L Change the way we think about our health, so the current way people think in this country is what you need to do about Diet Related Diseases you need to educate people and exercise and exert willpower and the corollary of that is that if you cannot get off your bottom and exercise, eat your own Fault And None of that is true. Exercise is a fantastic benefit of itself but its not good at helping you to lose weight so we tell people that exercise will help them lose weight and they go to the gym and they stop exercising and exercise is fantastic that its not that good at helping you lose weight. What is happening as there is an interaction between the commercial incentives are companies and our appetites. We find these foods they are marketing delicious and they dont make us as full as quickly and we eat more, they invest more, were more, they invest more and there have been 14 previous obesity plans in the country and almost all of them were voluntary measures and you have this interaction between our appetite in the commercial incentive of companies and you wont change unless you tackle it directly and thatis unless you tackle it directly and that is what we recommend with the Sugar And Salt reformulation. Its not tax to increase price, is to make companies reformulate with the sugary drinks tax, to take bad stuff and make the worst food better. Talk me throu. H and make the worst food better. Talk me through the Salt And Sugar tax and lets keep this basic, for me. A Chocolate Bar, the government agrees with your recommendation about the Sugar And Salt tax. Does the Chocolate Bar end up more expensive . The Chocolate Bar end up more pensive . The Chocolate Bar end up more exensive . . ,. , expensive . Almost certainly not. What happens expensive . Almost certainly not. What happens is expensive . Almost certainly not. What happens is the expensive . Almost certainly not. What happens is the tax expensive . Almost certainly not. What happens is the Tax Charge L expensive . Almost certainly not. I what happens is the Tax Charge on people buying sugar in huge quantities at wholesale level, not what you buy to make a cake at home, that cost more, so a Chocolate Bar, standard size might cost 60p but the cost of sugar in the Chocolate Bar under the tax might go up by £6, but the manufacturers, as they have done with sugary drinks, will reformulate the chocolate and take the sugar down and try to get the same Price Point and because the taste of things like Sweetness And Salt are relative, as the sugar comes down, we wont notice, as we didnt notice with sugary drinks. Theres been an Arms Race of sugar levels going up and our tolerance for sugar, we needed more and more sugar and we are trying to take that down and get the sugar out of the system. Share are trying to take that down and get the sugar out of the system. Are you sure then that the sugar out of the system. Are you sure then that what the sugar out of the system. Unbelievable amount of processed food so we need to do two things. We need to make the processed food better for us and we need to eat more fresh food, so we need to reduce the amount of processed food and make what we eat fresh and there are two parts of the strategy. One is about changing the long Term Food Culture and making us eat more, fresh, nutritious food on the other is about reducing the harm of the processed food or reducing the addictive nature of it, and there is good evidence that none of these sweeteners or other things, and you might get a reduction in sugar by the weight rather than a replacement with sweetness, but none of those are proven to be as bad for your health as the sugar is. There is some evidence that they might maintain your sweet palate but compared with eating those calories, we think that is a trade off worth making. 5 we think that is a tradeoff worth makinu. Because you are getting a lot of praise for the work you have done and we understand it will be about six months, the government will take six months to respond. I am trying to work out, what you have done, if you have put down what you think will work and what would make a difference, so in essence, if the government doesnt do what you recommend, then there is a problem, isnt there . It seems like that is what you have been put in place to do, to put in place things that will work, so why wait . Why does it take six months for the government to look at what you have researched and the work you have done and say, yes, we will do that . This is the nature of being an independent reviewer and that is the job you are offered. Before i thought a lot about that and i took the job, thought a lot about that and i took thejob, i spent thought a lot about that and i took the job, i spent two years and pretty much full time working on this and its been an enormous privilege and what ive tried to do to maximise the success or maximise the chance of getting these policies put in place, weve tried to create a manifesto and make the Communication Symbol and try to build coalitions around the various policies and we have also spoken and had focus groups, dialogues with citizens and spoken to low income groups and spoken to people in the North East and spoken to people around the country to make sure that there is public support for these proposals, so it maximises the chance of the government putting them into practice. Ive done two reviews before, one of them the first part of this and pretty much all of the policies have been implemented. All of the policies have been implemented. Weve been here all morning and let me show you the little calf born just yesterday morning, having a quiet moment on the farm this morning but so many implications for the Food Industry as far as our consumption and what it means for things like prices and also when it comes to things like imports and the renewed focus on quality and does that come from british farmers than maybe meet than that is imported from elsewhere and so many implications the industry is getting their head around let me introduce you to rachel from the national Farmers Union. You are listening to that interview with me and so many things to digesterfor the interview with me and so many things to digester for the industry but first lets talk about the education point, because its so important as we have lost contact with where our food comes from and how it is produced and that has big implications for what we buy and how much we are prepared to pay for it. The Tee Shots are very difficult because the Tee Shots are very difficult because you are hitting two narrow fairways because you are hitting two narrow fairways and if you find the fairway. Fairways and if you find the fairway, they are undulating and lumpy fairway, they are undulating and lumpy and bumpy so the ball can go inthe lumpy and bumpy so the ball can go in the middle of the fairway and it spits in the middle of the fairway and it spits into in the middle of the fairway and it spits into the rough and if it finds the rough spits into the rough and if it finds the rough some of it will come up to our knees the rough some of it will come up to our knees and you can struggle to find the our knees and you can struggle to find the ball, let alone hit it out of it. Find the ball, let alone hit it out of it. And find the ball, let alone hit it out of it. And if find the ball, let alone hit it out of it, and if you find the green, they of it, and if you find the green, theyare of it, and if you find the green, they are undulating as well, so its a reat they are undulating as well, so its a real challenge and some of the players a real challenge and some of the players not too impressed with the they are players not too impressed with the they are hitting lots of blind shots so they they are hitting lots of blind shots so they cant see where are heading to and so they cant see where are heading to and it so they cant see where are heading to and it is so they cant see where are heading to and it is one of the toughest challenges in all of World Golf and whoever challenges in all of World Golf and whoever wins on Sunday Evening will definitely whoever wins on Sunday Evening will definitely have earned it. Absolutely. That is scary. Comes up to your knee, i would be lost in it for days. Highlights on bbc two from eight oclock. It is really life affirming. The movie is not really about death, its a Love Story between a Father And Son and we hope to encourages you to reach the people you love and give them a squeeze because it is about cherishing the moment you have left with the people you love. You are an established actor and i wonder, before you met him and i know you got on with him brilliantly, but before we were told we got a kid that hasnt acted before, what was your face like and your reaction . Slightly anxious. The rule is you dont work with children and animals and ourfilm has a lot of kids, one of them being the lead character and then lots of animals and rabbits and dogs. It was a little intimidating but actually, you can go one of two ways. It can be a disaster it can be great. The great thing about working with kids, particularly with daniel is that he gave me such truth. I had this little boy looking up at me with these big eyes and i was teaching him about death and he was learning in real time as a year old, so it actually went the other way and we had an incredible time and ive never had an experience like it on a set. All you will hope is that your partner gives yOu Something to react to and i had this incredibly moving thing happening in front of me and constantly reining in the tears but this film is about a man coping with stoicism and the struggle was not breaking down, it seemed. Daniel is an amazing young kid as well. The relationship you see on camera all that affection is so real and completely genuine because we had a really good time and we got on and it was great fun. Ona and we got on and it was great fun. On a serious note, thats a position of great responsibility. These formative years and this is something he wont forget. Yes. Luckil , something he wont forget. Yes. Luckily. His something he wont forget. Yes. Luckily, his father, something he wont forget. Yes. Luckily, his father, john, something he wont forget. Yes. Luckily, his father, john, is luckily, his father, john, is incredibly sensitive to his Sons Process about a four year old learning about the idea of death so the scenes where i was actively talking to daniel about these ideas were very delicately handled and yes, the bigger picture, we arrived in this carnival of noise and big white vans, and his amazing family, his parents and his sister, i think they thought, what is going on. There was an open Facebook Message and she sent a photo on the off chance and suddenly we were making a movie and we made sure that the relationship with the family was real and we stayed in touch and it was a very specific and quite unique experience.
