And whoever you managed to find to talk to down there, a good Start to the evening. Not as good Start to the evening. Not as good as Luke Shaw, two minutes into the first half, he has already scored for england, the fastest Opening Goal in a euro 2020 final in the history of the competition. If i remember rightly, it goes back, in one form or another, to just after the second world war. Mark lowen is in rome, i should imagine that the reaction in rome was somewhat more subdued than In Wembley. I rome was somewhat more subdued than in wemble. ,. ,. Rome was somewhat more subdued than in wemble. ,. ,. , In Wembley. I have to say, apart from the incredibly In Wembley. I have to say, apart from the incredibly loud In Wembley. I have to say, apartj from the incredibly loud screams In Wembley. I have to say, apart i from the incredibly loud screams in the piazza del popolo, when england scored, there was a sense of excitement in the lead up, singing the national anthem, there were italians showing off the incredibly creative outfits, with the green, white and red wigs, some wearing Roman Gladiator helmets, and then 20 minutes in, complete shock. So, look, they have got an extremely long game ahead, and the italians are feeling confident, they know they have a strong team, they know they have a strong team, they know they are up against an English Team playing with a huge Home Advantage. Very few italians have been able to go to wembley, the italian president is in the stadium, the crowds In Wembley are going to be 90 english. But they make up for it here with the italian passion here in rome. We it here with the italian passion here in rome. It here with the italian passion here in rome. ~. W here in rome. We should also say that it is a special night for Luke Shaw to score, notjust The A Special Night for Luke Shaw to score, not just the first of the night at wembley, the first of hopefully many goals in this match, but also to score the night before his 26th birthday, so many happy returns to Luke Shaw and his family, who i should imagine are celebrating in style tonight. James reynolds. We cant go to james, but instead we will give you the view above Trafalgar Square, that is the National Gallery to the right of the picture. The people watching there were not able to get tickets for the fanzone with the very regimented tables, that is why the big screens are, where people can view, and a lot of people have gathered on the edge of Trafalgar Square in the Hope Ofjust squinting and stretching tall enough, high enough over the barriers, to be able to get a view of that match. You wouldnt begrudge anyone that tonight, they have certainly had a good Start to the match, england i, certainly had a good Start to the match, england 1, italy 0 in the opening minutes, Luke Shaw scoring in the second minute of the euro is 2020 final. You are watching Bbc News. We are going to go inside the stadium now, we can have a look on the pitch, as the competition is joined in earnest. Italy failed in an entirely unchanged team from their success against spain midweek in their semifinal. Changes on the England Side include the sad news that Phil Foden, as had been predicted before tonight, we had been warned about this buy Gareth Southgate in his News Conference yesterday, man citys Phil Foden, is not even on the Bench Tonight because he suffered a Foot Injury which meant he did not train at St Georges Park yesterday. So pretty certain he wasnt going to play, but you can imagine the disappointment for him. That said, he is a young man, hopefully plenty more opportunities for him to play for his national side in a final. Lets go to croydon, to my colleaguejames reynolds, who wisely, james, is wearing something that is going to deflect notjust wearing something that is going to deflect not just the wearing something that is going to deflect notjust The Rain but the beer that will be spilt, judging by what you are telling us earlier. I am wearing this raincoat now, as you can see, not because im worried about getting wet from The Rain, i am protecting myself against getting drenched with the beer when england scored, all the beer was thrown up in the air, but it doesnt travel three metres in the air, as i discovered, so i remain bone dry but as you can imagine, the crowd here erupted with happiness, with that early goal, they have been cheering england every time since then, booing every single touch by italy. These are pretty lucky people, they are not at the stadium itself, of course. But they have made this Box Park in croydon into their own mini stadium, it is covid secure, they had to deliver a negative test to get in here, they won a ballot to get in here, and at the moment they are having a pretty good evening good evening james, can you ust tell us, i mean, i good evening james, can you ust tell us, i mean, whati good evening james, can you just. Tell us, i mean, what arrangements have a made to ensure, try and ensure that people maintain social social distancing . Presumably when that goal was scored, there was a fair amount of contact, and you are undercover in there. I am not sure James Hird that. I think i am going to leave james behind, i will ask him that Question A little later. It is incredibly noisy down there. We can go back to preston, similarly euphoric, im sure, when the goal was scored. This is the scene there live, a little bit of a replay going on on the screen there, because the matches live on bbc one, and you can follow on Radio 5 Live as well, lots of people watching on multiple outlets. This is the scene in rome this evening, where our correspondent Mark Lowen was reporting from just a few moments ago, from the eternal city, silenced by its common passion for football and for the team. They are without their president this evening, because he is In Wembley, obviously hoping to see the team left the euros trophy. Wembley way, we are on wembley way, as you can see, a rather damp evening in london tonight. It has been a glorious day, but we were warned by Nick Miller and his colleagues at the Bbc Weather Centre that there was going to be some rain this evening, but we are also reassured it is light rain, which shouldnt in any way disrupt proceedings on the pitch and make playing conditions any less perfect than the Ground Team at wembley will have ensured. We always talk about the groundsmen and wimborne at wimbledon, but equally at wembley they are very, very, very careful about the condition of the pitch on which the players are performing what they hope will be a few memorable minutes of football between now and, what, memorable minutes of football between now and, what, 8245, and then again at 9 30, when we hope the match will be finished, unless there is extra time, and a terrifying prospect of penalties. The government says people will still be expected to wear masks in many indoor spaces, and on public transport, after Covid Restrictions in england are lifted. The Prime Minister is due to confirm tomorrow whether most of the rules will end on the 19th ofjuly, including the legal requirement to wear masks. Heres our health correspondentjim reed. Its one of the most visible signs of the pandemic. Injust over the week, the legal requirement to wear a mask in england is set to end. Speaking earlier, though, the Vaccines Minister said there would still be an expectation to mask up in some cases. The guidelines will be very clear on things like mask wearing. Theres an expectation of people to wear masks indoors, in crowded places, on public transport. So rather than governed by diktat, what were saying is we move to step four cautiously. In wales, scotland and Northern Ireland, wearing a mask will still be law for the time being. In england, Laboursaid Making The Rule Voluntary would be a mistake. We think more could be done to make sure that public spaces are properly ventilated. And as weve said all the way through this crisis, people who do need to go home to self isolate need, if theyre on low incomes, to be financially supported to do that. It comes as infections are rising across much of the country. More people are mixing, and there are signs the football has led to a spike among young men. Though in scotland, that trend has Started to reverse. Do you have a Registration Card . Across the uk, ministers have said 100,000 a day could soon be testing positive. Vaccines will keep the vast majority out of hospital, but some are warning there could still be disruption to the nhs. So the actual numbers in hospital would still be well below the second wave peak, even if we did hit that 100,000 a day. But, of course, its very disruptive having covid cases and there would, of course, be a lot of bad outcomes. But i guess the judgment is that its better that we do it now than in the winter. Tomorrow, borisjohnson will confirm plans to lift most of those last restrictions in england. But the message will be one of caution rather than celebration as ministers try to navigate out of this pandemic. Jim reed, Bbc News. And from the latest official figures on the virus we can see another 26 deaths recorded in the last 2a hours, and 31,772 new infections across the uk. It means on average there were around 31,500 new cases per day in the past week. More than 93,000 people had a first dose of the vaccine in the last 2a hours. That means nearly 46 Million people have had their firstjab, or 87 of uk adults. More than 211,000 people have just had a second dose, which means more than 34. 5 million, or 66 of adults, are fully vaccinated. Sir Richard Branson flew to the edge of space this afternoon, during virgin galactic s first fully crewed flight. Take off from New Mexico was slightly delayed by bad weather, but the flight is being seen as a milestone for the commercial space industry. Sir richard said it was the experience of a lifetime. From spaceport america, sophie long reports. Preparations were made before take off. About ten years and an hour and a half behind schedule, in one of the most desolate areas of north america, a lifelong dream became reality. Sir Richard Branson, along with two pilots and three other virgin galactic employees, were transported to the Spaceship Unity tethered to the mothership eve. Then take off. This is the moment hes been waiting for. After more than 16 years, and hundreds of millions of pounds, Sir Richard Branson is now on his way to space. Thats so cool. So you can see the moment when they release right there. Are you so excited to experience that . Forjust under four minutes, they experienced weightlessness and enjoyed a view of Planet Earth that only astronauts can dream of. Well, ive done some ridiculous things in my lifetime. Really, really, really ridiculous. But Ijust Cant wait for. One day to be able to experience this. Its the experience of a lifetime. And touchdown. Safely back on earth after a 90 minute flight. Critics call this a billionaires joyride, harmful to the planet Sir Richard says he wants to protect. For the people here at the first purpose built commercial spaceport on the planet, this Passenger Flight marks an historic moment in the long and continuing journey towards Space Tourism becoming a reality. The headlines on Bbc News its trippier Wholl Cross and its Luke Shaw. The fastest goal in a Euro Final ever england are on their way, and its thanks to a bit of Luke Shaw magic. England fans go wild as the goal goes in, and the country gets one step closer to football Coming Home for the first time since 66. Lets go now to italy and to longa, in the veneto region, where people have gathered to watch the match. Francesca barco and Rene Marcadella are two italy fans and join me now. Lovely to see you both, the picture is a little bit weak, but we are going to try and see if you can hear us. How did you feel when that England Goal went in . filth. Us. Thank you for bearing with us. Lets Take A Look at the scene in Trafalgar Square, quiet and calm now, as footballing continues. The scene is basically the protected area, the fanzone that has been set p area, the fanzone that has been set up in conjunction with the mayor of london, to provide a safe environment as long as they are covid compliant. A very quiet scene in central london. A look at preston, similarly subdued, watching this match, more importantly because they are paying attention to the screen. I think if you look at the streets of any major town or city, if you are taking the dog out for a walk, you might find the situation rather eerie out there, apart from the shouting from pubs and gardens. We can go to coventry, i think, a little bit soggy in coventry, because of a bit of rainfall we have also had in The Rainfall area. Again, those are the faces, what was it shakespeare said . Now sits expectation in the air . And then back into the stadium. That we go, Roberto Mancini giving his reaction to an injury, we are now at the stage of a little bit of a pause in play. Yet again, another sign of good humour, actually, an exchange of positive greetings between the two teams, playing with a great deal of respect, Captain Harry Kane there, as play reStarts. A lot of respect for englands performances in this competition and for italys long record of achievement in Euro And World cup competitions, in this case one that is being resulted in 33 matches unbeaten, which is quite a record for england to try and beat. David beckham there, Touching Knuckles with tom cruise, as they reacted to Luke Shaws goal. You can see the expression of the italy fans, they perhaps were not expecting england to take such commanding charge of the match so early on, but it is a long 90 minutes ahead. If you add in injury time, it could be a lot longer, extra time, and of course the Thing Everybody fears, penalties, if we really cant get a resolution out of this match. So far, 1 0, england ahead, one would hope england would have the advantage of youth as they play last into a second half, and then italy might be struggling a bit by then. But nobody would discount Italys Command and potential, look at the match against spain. You are going to see a lot of shots over the next hour or so of people sitting staring silently out of shot, imagine the big screen, imagine how you would feel, you are probably watching us because you are not particularly into england football, but i dare you to be completely unmoved or untouched by the kind of historic feel of a night like tonight, even if you are living, working, spending time in scotland or Northern Ireland or wales, with your own significant sporting heritage, heritage separate from that of england, because we do not have a uk wide team. You may be indifferent to whether england or italy win, but you cannot be indifferent to the impact it as having among England Fans, and even those fair weather fans, people like me, we find ourselves utterly bewitched by what has happened over the past couple of weeks. And we will find out how the outcome of this match is covered and how quickly the newspapers can respond to it, they certainly did with the semifinal, in the papers. Joining me tonight, two very experienced sports journalists. Mihir bose used to be the bbc s sports editor, and he will bejoined by tony the bbc s sports editor, and he will be joined by tony evans, the bbc s sports editor, and he will bejoined by tony evans, i think the bbc s sports editor, and he will be joined by tony evans, i think you can expect some lively exchanges and, more importantly, very knowledgeable ones two knowledgeable ones two knowledgeable people and me i will just be nodding and agreeing with Everything Tony and mihir say. Parts of the us are braced for more record breaking temperatures having already endured the hottestjune on record. Forecasters are warning that some places including California And Nevada will remain dangerously hot, fuelling fears of even more wildfires. Charlotte wright reports. In the western united states, the heat is relentless. On friday, Death Valley in california reached 54. 1; degrees celsius, believed to be the highest temperature ever reliably recorded on earth. Now more warnings that much of California And Nevada will be dangerously hot in the coming days. We definitely took the time to take extra precautions. We brought a cooler full of water and we are making sure everyone stays hydrated. It is the hottest place on earth. This is hot. Its never been hotter. With the extreme heat come wild fires. Firefighters in the region say the air is so dry that much of the water dropped by aircraft to quell the flames evaporates before it reaches the ground. As soon as you get these hot temperatures and these extreme drought conditions, that leads to the explosive growth on these wildfires, so not only are we dealing with these temperatures that are breaking records, affecting more than 30 Million people, now, as those wildfires grow, in the coming days we are going to have to watch the Air Quality impacts in the region. In northern california, nearly 200 square miles of forest have been closed, and homes have been evacuated close to the nevada border, while in idaho the governor has declared a wild Fire Emergency and mobilised the states national guard. Because of our drought that we just came out of this winter, our fuels, the trees, the shrubs, they are very, very dry, and so as we extend through the summer, we can expect larger fires. So its quite challenging, the months ahead. The national Weather Service has advised those in the region to drink plenty of water and stay inside air conditioned buildings. The high temperatures are expected to continue well into next week. Charlotte wright, Bbc News. Now its time for a look at the weather with darren bett. Hello there. Weve got some more summery weather later on in the new week, but were Starting with some rain. And The Rain is developing more widely overnight tonight across england and wales. Some heavy bursts, too. The thundery downpours in scotland will fade away. It should be largely dry tonight in Northern Ireland. A little Bit Cooler here, but a warm night with the Cloud And Rain in england and wales. And still some heavy bursts of rain by the morning as well. Its a bit of a messy picture. These areas of rain moving northwards. The rain may ease off for a while, but as things brighten up, we get a bit of sunshine, that will trigger some thundery downpours in scotland but also in particular towards the South East of England And East anglia. Could bring some Flash Flooding as well. Looks a bit drier for Northern Ireland, wales and the south west. Temperatures could be a little bit higher than they were today. Now, move things on into tuesday, and most of the downpours are away the other side of the channel. Weve still got some sharp showers around, but they are becoming fewer and lighter. Its turning drier from the west with a bit more sunshine, so on tuesday, temperatures will be higher. Hello, this is Bbc News. The headlines its trippier Wholl Cross, and its Luke Shaw the fastest goal in a Euro Final ever, england are one up against italy and its thanks to a bit of Luke Shaw magic. Luke shaw on the eve of his 26 Birthday Scoring that goal. Two minutes in and he puts england 1 0 ahead and that remains a score as we approach half time. England fans went wild as the goal went in and the country got one step closer to a Football Trophy for the first time since 1966.
