Three days after the assassination of its president , haitis political crisis has only deepened. There are reports the countrys lawmakers have nominated the head of the senate, joseph lambert, as Interim President. A rival political faction, which includes the Acting Interim Prime Minister claudejoseph, says the move is unconstitutional. Haitian officals have taken the extraordinary step of requesting Military Help from the united states and the United Nations. Courtney bembridge reports. Crowds gathered outside the us embassy in port au prince, with suitcases packed, looking for a way out. Translation I Cant close my eyes, I Cant sleep at night. I had to come here to the embassy because im scared. There are so many gunshots and you dont even know where theyre coming from. Ive abandoned my home, I Cant go back, i dont know about my family. The country of 11 Million people is reeling from the assassination of its president , shot dead inside his home on wednesday. These are two of the men haitian authorities say carried out the plot. They were attacked by the public as they were loaded into a police car. 17 men have been arrested so far, most of them colombian, but investigators are still looking for who ordered the killing. Haiti was already plagued by Hunger And Gang violence but the assassination has pitched the country deeper into turmoil. Its requested the United Nations and the united states send troops to help secure the country and protect key infrastructure. The us has declined the request and the un may also be reluctant to get involved. I think the un is thoroughly sick of haiti, they had a 13 Year Peacekeeping Force there that got in a lot of trouble in a lot of ways. The last thing being the Cholera Epidemic which the peacekeeping forces brought into haiti. So i think they dont really want to get entangled again. I think most outside forces dont want to get militarily entangled again in haiti if they can avoid it. Adding to the uncertainty is the political situation there is no working parliament, two men are claiming to be the prime minister, and a third of the senate has just nominated another man to lead as Interim President. Courtney bembridge, bbc news. In a major escalation since international troops started withdrawing from afghanistan, the taliban have seized a key Border Crossing. Sweet moments for afghans who can afford them. The kind of life many young afghans here, men and women, want to live. Growing insecurity already threatens it. We are hurrying, just coming to the restaurant, coming to a cafe, meeting our friends and just go home. The taliban say this is a western lifestyle. Maybe they say we are acting like europeans or american people. But i think its not true. We have the right to choose our life. A lot is being knocked out of afghan lives. At this popular bowling alley, we hear notjust worry about the taliban. The government is failing them too, even in promoting sports like this. Munir Ahmad Asafi is a national champion. Translation fewer people are coming here now. Before we used to gather about a0 people, we would divide into teams and hold competitions, but that doesnt happen any more. Lets get some of the days other news. Teams working on the debris of an Apartment Block that partially collapsed in The American State Of Florida two weeks ago have pulled another fifteen bodies from the wreckage. It brings the number of confirmed dead to 79, with 61 still missing. No one has been found alive since the building on the outskirts of miami fell. Coronavirus measures in the netherlands are being tightened as daily infections have surged in the past few days. For the next five weeks all nightclubs and live music events have been suspended. Restaurants and cafes must close at midnight. But the country is not resuming the lockdown measures that were lifted two weeks ago. Thailand is tightening restrictions in Greater Bangkok and some southern provinces. The measures are designed to curb a wave of Coronavirus Infections which saw a high number of new cases and deaths on thursday. North korea has reportedly rejected donations of the Astrazeneca Vaccine due to concerns over its potential side effects, according to a South Korean think tank. North korea has yet to confirm a single case of covid i9, a claim long questioned by analysts. In the united states, theres been a clash between Vaccine Makers and health officials over whether the public need a third vaccine jab, or booster shot. Last Night Pfizer said it would seek approval for a third dose, amid concerns over the rapidly spreading Delta Variant. The centers for disease control, the Food And Drug administration, and the who have all weighed in, saying a third Jab Isnt needed, or not right now. Pfizer has been developing a Booster Treatment as a way to strengthen antibodies which fade over time and guard against new, highly contagious versions of covid. Well, earlier i spoke to drjohn swartzberg, Professor Emeritus of The School Of Public Health and an expert on vaccines and infectious diseases at the university of california berkeley. I asked whether a third Vaccine Dose made sense in helping to gain greater protection against the virus. If a little bits good, a lot must be better. Of course, that doesnt hold for a lot of things, particularly medicines. You know, pfizers idea, that people need a third dose, is curious. They didnt complement that with any, releasing any data to support their argument, and frankly there is no data that im aware of that says that people need a third dose at this point. Its perfectly possible that months from now immunity may wane and we may need a third dose, but right now theres just no evidence for that. I think the who and the cdc and the fda are all correct. Pfizer say theyre going to be seeking this Emergency Approval regardless. Whats involved in the process . Well, the process is really quite robust. They all submit all of their data to the fda, the fda will massage it for a while and then there will be a select committee that is not part of the fda but advises the fda, that will then massage it further and will make a recommendation. And almost always, but not always, the fda follows that select committees recommendation. Then it goes to the cdc where the cdc will massage the data. They have another committee thats independent of the cdc, that advises the cdc, called Acip Theyll do the same thing and, ultimately, give their blessing, or not, to the cdc. So its somewhat serpentine, how theyre going to get there. This comes amid rising cases of the Delta Variant causing concern here in the uk, also across large parts of asia. There are also variants which are of interest, not yet of concern, but of interest, such as the Lambda Variant which weve heard about. How important is it to update vaccines to keep up the pace with these variants . Well, the good news is that to date there is no variant that reliably, or predictably, will escape the vaccines the immunity we get from vaccine. Thats the good news. Even the Delta Variant, while it doesnt respond as well to, for example, astrazeneca or the mrna vaccines here, Orjohnson Johnson here, it does respond adequately so that people arent winding up in the hospital and dying from it, which is the main thing we want from these vaccines. But going forward, youre touching on a very important point and that is that weve seen this virus evolve, with new variant after new variant. The uk was battered by the Alpha Variant in december and january, then we got hit by it not as badly in the spring, and now the uk is battered by the Delta Variant and now were getting the same phenomenon. So were just always a few months behind the uk with these variants. But what were going to continue to see until we get Herd Immunity in this Planet Notjust in one country or two countries, but on this planet were going to see, continue to see Human Beings getting infected and producing new variants, and some of these variants ultimately may escape the immunity we get from vaccines. You mentioned the global immunity. Theres this discussion about third doses, but huge parts of the world, people havent even had their first dose yet. Yes, yes. There is an irony there, isnt there. Pfizers talking about giving people here a third Dose And Weve got so many billions of people not vaccinated at all. Its been saddening and its a good argument if theres that much excess vaccine, perhaps we would be better off All Of Us would be better off if we used that vaccine to get more people vaccinated in other parts of the world. John swartzberg, Professor Emeritus at the university of california, berkeley, thank you very much, fascinating to talk to you. The former first lady of egypt, jehan sadat, has died at the age of 88, and been given a Military Funeral in cairo. The headlines haiti heads into chaos, an Interim President is nominated, but a Rival Faction says the move is unconstitutional. The taliban are rapidly retaking land across afghanistan as the us led mission withdraws the last of its troops. Residents of california are bracing for a weekend of record setting temperatures as heat continues to build on the west coast. The us national Weather Service has issued an excessive heat alert, with meteorologists warning that some of southern californias inland areas could reach temperatures of 49 degrees celsius, that is 120 degrees fahrenheit. Earlier on, i spoke to Eric Schoening and asked him what things were like at the moment. He is from the us national Weather Service. This is a long duration and widespread heatwave across much of the Western Us that has already begun, it is really going to peak this weekend, we are going to see really hot temperatures and really big heat impacts, potential Health Impacts for the population through the weekend and into the beginning of next week. And this comes off the back of periods of drought in california, Fire Concerns talk us through how those play out in this situation . Absolutely. So, much of the western united states is in an extreme drought, so it has been going on for quite a while, and that creates a lot of concerns, Water Supply concerns in many places, we also have Fire Concerns in many places, where a lot of our fuels for potential wildfires are quite dry. And then you add on the heat and that dries out those potential Wildfire Fuels even more, and also as i mentioned, potentially leads to a lot of Health Concerns across the population. The united Nations Security Council has voted to extend a Cross Border Operation bringing aid into syria from neighbouring turkey for another year. The mandate for the long Running Operation was due to expire on saturday, but a last Minute Compromise was reached between russia and the us. Jean mackenzie reports from the turkey syria border. Here was her last resort. Its where she ran to after two of her sons were killed. As millions fled the syrian regime, they found shelter in this corner of the country, outside the governments control. Now theyre trapped in makeshift camps, up against the border with turkey, existing on help from outside. Just over the border in turkey, trucks are loaded with food, Water And Medicine part of an un agreement to bring crucial aid into the part of the country still controlled by rebels. 1,000 of these trucks go across the border every month, carrying vital supplies and that now includes covid vaccines. This is an absolute lifeline for people in idlib. For many, its their only lifeline. That lifeline was in danger. Russia, syrias key ally, signalled it wanted to close the crossing, preferring aid to come from Inside Syria instead. But after a last Minute Compromise, all members of the Security Council voted to keep it open for another year. This has proven to be the safest, the most direct and the most reliable way of getting aid to people. Whatever happens, we must keep this Border Crossing open. If we can have more crossing points, we would welcome that. For this hospital, where medicines and supplies were already running low, its avoided a catastrophe. The us ambassador to the un said after the vote that the Security Council had made the decision to save lives that millions of syrians can breathe a sigh of relief tonight. Jean mackenzie, bbc news, on the turkey syria border. Relations between russia and the west have been strained for quite some time. Moscows been criticised for its alleged role in cyberattacks, its annexation of crimea, and its support of the syrian government. Russia criticises the west for interfering in its domestic affairs. The latest Sticking Point is a little less momentous, but a lot more bubbly, as Tim Allman explains. Newsreel cosmonaut Yuri Gararin set the jollifications | in motion, and the 300 guests enjoyed themselves in real russian fashion. Even in the days of the soviet union, when it may have been dismissed as a symbol of the decadent west, russians still love champagne. So much so, they have become a little possessive about it, insisting that within their borders, they will decide what is and isnt the real thing. A new law requires foreign companies, including those in france, to label their bottles as sparkling wine, but there is no such rule for the russian version, known as shampanskoye. This has left something of a sour taste in the mouth for french ministers, wanting to show their support for a world renowned industry. Translation it is no longer possible to use the Word Champagne when we sell bottles in russia. The Governments Position on this matter is very clear. Champagne is french and it comes the champagne region. And that is a sentiment shared by more than 120 countries, who have given the Name Champagne protected status and believe champagne comes from france. Wine producers there believe this is only a temporary hiccup. Translation it is an internal law that aims to regulate the production of russian wines. But we are sort of the collateral victim, and i believe the russian authorities are completely open to negotiations. For now, exporters have been advised to halt sales to russia, and the french government says it could raise the matter at the world trade organization. But everyone seems to think a solution will be found. After all, as one french official said, were not going to war over champagne. Tim allman, bbc news. The England Captain, Harry Kane, says his team must enjoy these moments of history as they prepare to take on italy in the euro 2020 final On Sunday. Its the first time in 55 years that englands men will line up in a majorfinal. Harry kane says england know they have a tough game ahead, but they believe they can win. Hes been speaking to our sports editor, dan roan. He is proud, prolific and passionate. Harry kane is just one win away from doing what no other England Captain has achieved for more than half a century. Today, explaining how it felt to be within touching distance of glory. To be playing and leading the boys out on our first European Final is going to be extra special. So, yeah, i mean, the excitement is there, im sure there will be a few nerves, but you have to take these moments, enjoy these moments of history and hopefully we can go one step further and win the whole thing. Its the biggest game in my career so far. Doing Something Special with england will probably always surpass anything at Club Leveljust because of the magnitude, the long wait for a final, the long wait to win a trophy. 1966 World Cup winning Captain Bobby Moore remains the only man to lead england to such silverware. Now kane could emulate him. How does it feel to be compared with an icon like that . Whenever your name is mentioned in that company, it gives you motivation, it gives you confidence. It would be an incredible achievement, these are the opportunities you have to grab with both hands. We are all winners. We want to win. We will have to do what we can to do that On Sunday. But one of footballs most successful national teams stand in the way. Four times World Cup winners, italy have been a formidable force at the euros. It is a real 50 50 game. Ithink, because, italy have a better history than us of winning tournaments, but i think a lot of us at Club Level have experience of playing in the biggest games across europe. We believe we can win the game but we also know it will be tough. Out of sorts at the start of the tournament, Harry Kane has now scored four goals, and spearheaded a team that has thrilled the nation. How special is it to you to know that this team is helping people through a tough time . It is amazing, and sometimes as footballers we dont take all that in. We see ourselves as doing a job. I think we have shown we are normal lads. We wear the badge with pride, and everyone should be proud of the way they have represented themselves, obviously their friends and their family across the country. Very best of luck, harry. Thank you. Harry kane. Harry kane speaking to our sports editor, dan roan, there. Well, italy are unbeaten after 33 matches, so expectations are sky high there, too, with fans desperately hoping their team can bring home their second euros trophy. 0ur correspondent, mark lowen, reports from rome. Its notjust england impatient for football glory. Italys last European Title came 53 years ago. But theres no national trauma here, since World Cup victory followed in 1982. Playing in both triumphs was goalkeeper dino zoff. How did he feel at that crowning moment . In heaven, he says. In the scramble for silverware, italy is hungry, and, he says, ready. Translation they dontl need my advice, but in any final you need to stay calm and positive, to believe you can do it. It takes me back to 1968. When you lift the trophy, you feel like a god. Youre on cloud nine, and i think italy can do it again. Theyre a very strong team. And they know it. Theyve been transformed by Roberto Mancini since the shame of failing to qualify for the last World Cup, giving the Team Youth and confidence. All ages here arejust enjoying the ride. Football runs to the veins of italians. Italys success has already inspired generations. Yes, england is yearning for the game to come home but with Passion And Dedication they will face a tough fight. Italy is at football fever pitch. Theyve waited 53 years for european glory, now perhaps its two days away. Mark lowen, bbc news, rome. That is it for now. You can reach me on twitter, im richpreston. Please do drop me a note. From me and the team, thank you for watching. Bye bye. Hello there. Its looking unsettled this weekend as well, but its not going to be raining all the time everywhere. There will be some places staying dry, but the general theme this weekend is for sunny spells and for scattered showers to develop. Again, these will be heavy and thundery, and slow moving as winds will be light. If you look at the Pressure Chart for saturday, weve got this Weather Front across the south, bringing an area of more persistent rain to southern counties. It will continue its Journey Eastwards through the morning through the channel islands, southern and south eastern counties of england, then clear away in the afternoon. Elsewhere, after a dry start, well see those showers developing a little bit further westwards this time, affecting wales, west midlands, North West England and scotland. Again, it will be heavy, slow moving torrential downpours which could lead to localised flooding. Those temperatures range from 19 21 degrees. Now, those showers will fade away during saturday evening, and then, overnight, most places will be dry, but rain will start to push into the far west later on, those temperatures in double figures. Its going to be another mild and Muggy Night for most of us. Now, for sunday, a new area of low pressure starts to push in off the atlantic, affecting northern and western areas. It looks like some eastern parts may stay dry altogether with some hazy spells of sunshine. So, most of the heavy showers On Sunday will be across more northern parts of the uk, but wales, northern ireland, the southwest of england will start to see areas of more persistent Rain Moving in. In the east, with that sunshine, we could see 22 23 celsius, and again, its going to feel quite humid. So, for wimbledon this weekend, saturday, the early rain will clear away to leave something a bit drier into the afternoon. Sunday, mainly dry, but i still Cant Rule out the Odd Shower there. And for wembley On Sunday, certainly its a dry start, but into the evening, we start to see some of that rain in the west pushing its way eastwards. Thats because this area of low pressure will be working its way southwards and eastwards across the country. By monday, this is the Position Itll be in. Its going to bring a very unsettled day. Most northern and western areas will see sunny spells, some heavy showers. Its england and wales which will see the cloudiest skies and areas of heavy, maybe even thundery rain affecting central and southern areas, which could lead to some issues. The temperatures not quite as high 19 20 celsius will be the high. The heavy, thundery showers clearing away from the South And East on tuesday and wednesday. By the mid latter part of the week, High Pressure wants to build in, so itll start turning sunnier, drier, and warmer. Jehan sadat, who died at the age of 88. This is bbc news, the headlines haitian Government Officials say theyve asked the us and the un to send troops to protect key infrastructure as the country reels from Wednesdays Assassination of president jovenel moise. Meanwhile the Countrys Senate has named the speaker of the upper chamber, joesph lambert, as Interim President. The Taliban In Afghanistan say theyve captured two major frontier points, one with iran and the other with turkmenistan. The militants are rapidly retaking land as the us led mission withdraws the last of its troops. President Ashraf Ghani has conceded his Security Forces are in a critical transition. California residents are bracing for a weekend of record setting temperatures as the heat continues to build on the west coast. The us national Weather Service has issued an excessive heat alert, saying that temperatures in some inland areas could reach 49 degrees celsius. Coronavirus infections in the uk have risen to their highest level forfive months. The office
