Both leaders are due to Give a News Conference imminently. Senior doctors in england are to be balloted on industrial action if the gOvernments proposed 1 Pay Rise Isnt improved. The family of Saskia Jones, murdered by a convicted terrorist at Fishmongers Hall, calls on the leaders of the organisation behind the event to step down. And last Minute Training for england before the squad fly to rome for their clash with ukraine in the Euros Quarterfinals. And at 2. 30, well be bringing the local stories that matter to you as we go across the uk. Sir Keir Starmer says labour is back after The Partys narrow victory in the Batley And Spen By Election. In a close contest, Kim Leadbeater, the sister of the murdered mp Jo Cox, held the West Yorkshire Seat with a Majority Ofjust 323 votes. The conservatives had hoped to gain the seat they came second with George Galloway in third. The result is likely to ease pressure on Keir Starmer for now after recent criticism of his leadership from some within The Party. Our political correspondent, nick eardley, is in batley for us. A win, but by the narrowest of margins. There were many Over the last few days who were predicting that labour would lose this seat, farm and the Labour Party thought as late as this morning that might be the case, and if that had happened that would have sparked a crisis for the leadership, which has been under a lot of pressure since the local elections and since the loss of the hartlepool By Election back in may. Instead, Over the last few hours, Keir Starmer has been celebrating in a Constituency Result which he hopes will Give The Party a new lease of life. A narrow win, but one that really matters for labour. Some have written of The Partys chances of winning Batley And Spen but Kim Leadbeater managed to hold on and Labours Leader was delighted. When the Labour Party sticks to its core values, is rooted in its communities and pulls together, we can win, just as weve won here. This is the start, labour is back. If labour had lost here the pressure on Keir Starmer would have increased significantly. There was even talk of a Leadership Challenge, but, for now, breathing space. All Smiles Today but the campaign has been heated, sometimes ugly. Accusations of harassment, police accompanying candidates as they canvas support. The new mp says she wants to heal some of the division is. We need to do politics better. We need to do politics differently. There is no place for abuse, intimidation, you know, for me personally, but actually for the people who were campaigning with me. Weve had things thrown at people, weve had an assault, you know, someones been arrested. Thats not what we need in our communities, what we need in our country. And if i canjust work a little bit through this role to try and improve things and try and show a different way, then i think thats really important. In batley this morning the scale of the challenge was clear. We are divided and it will take a lot to get that back. I hope she shows her true colours and gets things done what she says to get done because, lets face it, where is batley going . Its going nowhere. Ill Give hera chance, ill Give everyone a chance, but time will tell. The result has particular significance for Kim Leadbeater s family her sister Jo Cox was the mp here by a far right extremist five years ago. But its also an important result for national politics. Labour held on despite losing thousands of votes to the former mp George Galloway, who finished third. This result will come as a huge relief to the Labour Party. Many were preparing for a loss, so a win, even a narrow one, will feel significant. But Keir Starmer still faces big questions about his leadership about his vision for the country, about why he wants to be Prime Minister. So, while the Labours Leader will celebrate todays victory, it takes the pressure off for a while and doesnt remove it completely. For the conservative candidate, disappointment. His party admitted recent headlines and the resignation of the Health Secretary Matt hancock may have harmed their chances. The issue with matt did Come Upi on the doorstep but it was a wide range of different issues and at The End of the day we have to come back to the fact that gOverning partiesjust dont gain By Elections. Its unprecedented to do so and it was unprecedented to do so in hartlepool. The Batley And Spen result matters to the local community, but it will have important ramifications in westminster too. Lets cross now to check is where the Prime Minister is meeting with the Prime Minister is meeting with the german chancellor, Angela Merkel. , the german chancellor, Angela Merkel. ,. ,. , merkel. Lot in order to protect its own citizens, and that is a continuous learning citizens, and that is a continuous Learning Process that we undergo, we have to Learning Process that we undergo, we have to adjust time and again to the most have to adjust time and again to the most recent have to adjust time and again to the most recent developments, there are the chances most recent developments, there are the chances i can Give. Thank you i very much to sam, and you will have heard what Chancellor Merkeljust said about the german process and where they are on double jabs, and thatis where they are on double jabs, and that is great and right. It sounds as though progress is being made and i think that angela is right to point out that in the uk we also have to have restrictions and restrictions on people coming from germany at the present time, and Thatis Germany at the present time, and that is quite right, you would expect us to have tough measures to stop the disease arriving in this country. On your question about the Institute Of India and the astrazeneca vaccinations, i see no reason at all why the nhra approved vaccines should not be recognised as part of the vaccine passports, and im very confident that that will not proved to be a problem. One your point about Batley And Spen, i would say that actually we thought an incredibly positive campaign, and all things considered did very well to reduce a long Standing Labour Majority northern several decades old to only 323 with what i think if im not mistaken was the biggest swing in favour of the gOvernment since the war, so i think that it was positive and ryan fought on fighting crime, more police out on the street, and getting investment into Batley And Spen and across West Yorkshire and that is what we will continue to do. I think its extraordinary that 30 drugs are currently forbidden from moving from gb to Northern Ireland to say nothing of the problem of chilled meats with which you will be familiar. Imagine if as i say, i think i pointed out, to another day at european colleague, imagine if bratwurst could not be moved from dortmund to dusseldorf because of the jurisdiction of an international court, you would think it was absolutely extraordinary so we have to sort it out, im sure as angela says with Goodwill And Patience we can sort it out, but we will need to do that, we will need to fix it because it needs to be fixed but hopefully as we said at our bilateral. When it comes to chilled meats the universe is behind us, as i think angela said, or maybe i said, but we must make progress on that. But that should not in anyway impede the development of a much stronger bilateral relationship between the uk and germany, and i really mean this. I think that one of the features of our membership of the eu Over 45 years was that perhaps we did not really intensify some of our bilateral relations in the way we could have done, and i think that what we have agreed today, to go forward with a new intergOvernmental approach, bilateral discussions, intensive discussions of Policy Areas that really matter to both of us, whether on security or international relations or on the economy, i think that would be profoundly good, certainly for this country, and i hope also for our german friends as well. Of course we will follow the l scientific Guidance And Advice if we receive any such suggestion but at the moment, as i said, in answer to ryan, the position is very clear in the uk, which is we have certain events which we can put on in a careful and controlled manner with testing of everybody who goes there. And the crucial point is that as i said earlier on here in the uk we have now built up a very considerable wall of immunity against the disease by our vaccination programme, so i think your readers should know that in the uk 85 i think have had a first dose and more than 63 have had twojobs. And since you get 80 or more protection from one dose and 93 protection from one dose and 93 protection from one dose and 93 protection from two doses, as you can tell there is a very great degree of resistance to the virus in the uk population. The way you can tell that is if you look at the distinction between the graphs that Show Cases and the graphs that show serious illness and death, and now we are seeing a big change since the Vaccine Programme began, and that is why we are on this Road Map back to normality. I want to stress that we have been very cautious at every stage, but that is why it has been effective and why it has been an irreversible Road Map. So a jOint Press Conference there with the today, Thank You. So a joint press| conference there with the german chancellor, Angela Merkel, and the Prime Minister, borisjohnson, at chequers, this marking the 22nd visit the Angela Merkel and her last two the uk. She has been in power and an office since 2005 and dominated global politics for the last 16 years, stepping down in the autumn, they use the opportunity to announce the creation of a new academic medal in the uk in her honour but crucially they were answering questions from journalists on Travel And Trade predominately, areas that have really put some pressure on the anglo german relationship in the last few years. One travel Angela Merkel saying she 0ne Travel Angela Merkel saying she accepts that double vaccinated people will travel to germany without quarantining in the foreseeable future, this is a departure because we had thought that merkel was in fact pushing the eu to ban all Uk Travellers regardless of their Vaccination Status because of the growth of the Delta Variant cases here in the uk. Some warm words on a future Trading Relationship as well. Germany being britains second largest trading partner. Lets bring in our political correspondent who was at westminster. What did you make of that . It westminster. What did you make of that . , westminster. What did you make of that . ,. , that . It was interesting. Iwould oint to that . It was interesting. Iwould point to one that . It was interesting. Iwould point to one thing that . It was interesting. Iwould point to one thing first, that . It was interesting. Iwould point to one thing first, he i that . It was interesting. Iwould| point to one thing first, he didnt mention which is significant and the real reason Angela Merkel was here, here real intention was what she laid out in the beginning which was the creation of this new relationship, this architecture to ensure cooperation between the uk and germany. This is all about Angela Merkel, before she leaves office, weve had brexit in the uk has left. The uk chose not to sign any sort of Cooperation Agreement with the eu on foreign Policy And Defence policy so its up to individual eu countries and Angela Merkel is taking the lead. She said she was open to a Friendship Treaty with the uk in the future. This week the foreign ministers have signed such an agreement to talk about dealing with Russia And China and Climate Change. So thats a really important structural underpinning of the relationship which she wants to put in place before she goes. So thatis put in place before she goes. So that is the long term impact on this. A couple of other things to point out. On Northern Ireland, she was asked about this, the arrangements for Northern Ireland and the protocol which the Overnment'>Uk GOvernment has issues with and wants to see changes to, Angela Merkel clearly saying that the protocol itself which was negotiated and agreed by borisjohnson and with borisjohnson she thinks should stay in place as it is. She didnt hint they could be changes to that. But she talked about accommodations and pragmatic solutions within that which is very much the eu approach. Germany is not going to deviate from that. We have seen that all the way through the brexit negotiations. The Prime Minister talking about the difficulties of sending medicines and sausages. 0ne Difficulties of sending medicines and sausages. One thing to clarify there, my understanding is that the Medicines Issue is when the exemption on that has been put in place, it expires at The End of the year, and the eur says said it would change it to allow the free movement of medicines from the uk into Northern Ireland because it sees thatis Northern Ireland because it sees that is important. That i think was an important issue. And finally on the virus, Angela Merkel saying her slight change of tone was signalled in germany by the Health Minister in Germany Yesterday saying that Germany Yesterday saying that germany is looking to open up to double vaccinated travellers as it gets to understand more about the virus. Its not going to happen immediately. The euros was an important message, she and the german authorities clearly have concerns about the number of people that the Overnment'>Uk GOvernment has decided to let into those Semi Final and final matches at wembley. She has communicated that to borisjohnson. She certainly did. She was pretty gracious in defeat, i think its fair to say. Thank you very much. Lets cross now to jane and find out whats going on in the sport. Good afternoon. Its a busy day at wimbledon for the brits, Mens Number one Dan Evans is in action this afternoon, ahead of Andy Murray whos playing the number ten Seed Denis Shapovalov later. And in fact, just three days after that match and that Harry Kane Goal englands victory has meant that Tony Cruz has announced his retirement from the international game. Peter hammond from spalding has been collecting Football Shirts since he was 10 years old and he has Three Hundred And Sixty Seven of them. Thats got to be some sort of record. Look norths Simon Spark has the story. Grealish in. If youre feeling the Football Fever after the buzz. And that is it. Spare a thought for Peter Hammond from spalding. He has an obsession for Football Shirts and he has hundreds of them. Last count, i actually thought it was 364, i found an extra three in the wardrobe, so, last count, ive got 367 shirts in total. Inside the house, his drawers are full of them. Literally, for as long as i can remember, ive always, as much as i love my football, ive always loved Football Shirts, Manchester United fan at heart, and i can remember getting the 1992 adidas home kit. Ive still got the shorts, which in no way am i squeezing into these days. But to fully appreciate the scale of this collection, you need to see them all at once. Im sure if you asked my wife, she has got a firm idea that she wants to convert the garage and kick me out into that, so i think thats going to become my Man Cave Shirt room. This is the Bayern Munich shirt. Worn once in 1996 in schalke. Number on the back and its actually, i dont know if you can pick it up, its actually what we believe is the tape, there. So the players at the time with this nature of the adidas shirt, would put tape there to stop it rubbing against them. I think its just my attachment to football and i was never going to be a footballer, i will certainly never good enough, but maybe some way i could have a decent collection that goes some way to filling that gap, if you like. And its notjust football clubs. As far as england goes, after their incredible win, he is already spoilt for choice with 2a different lions tops. Every time that england have played and won in the euros are so far, ive had this shirt on, so i think this one will be sticking with me and this will be the one i will be wearing on saturday. Hoping that its a bit of a good luck charm. Of course, therell be another England Kit to add to his collection if they carry on. Simon spark, Bbc Look north, spalding. The Announcement Yesterday of a huge new factory in sunderland for Electric Car Batteries will need to be the first of many, if supply is to keep up with expected demand. Coventry airport has already been identified as another site where a new gigafactory could be in operation by the middle of the decade. But how many Electric Cars are already on the road, and is the infrastructure ready for many more . Our Reality Check Correspondent Chris Morris is here. The uk is committed bylaw the uk is committed by law to get to net zero Carbon Emissions no later than 2015 to limit the rise in global temperatures. That might sound like a long time in the future but to get a net zero action has to start now and accelerate quickly and transport is one of the big challenges. Its currently responsible for 27 of all Uk Emissions of the Greenhouse Gases that cause global warming. And cars account for more than half of that amount. As you can see at the bottom of this chart. All the Petrol And Diesel which is being used. Thats one of the reasons why the gOvernment has announced they will be no more sales of new Petrol And Diesel cars after The End of this decade. It also means there needs to be a rapid increase in the Production And Use of electric vehicles, a process which is already under way. At The End of 2020 they were 432,000 emission vehicles on uk roads. Most of them Electric Cars. Thats not much more than 1 of the Overall total but there were none just Over a decade ago. Worldwide, global sales of Electric Cars rose by nearly 50 last year with well Over 3 Million sales taking place during the pandemic. One estimate is that one in five new cars sold will be electric by 2025. So Car Companies are making massive investments in Electric Car production. The plans to phase out the use of the internal combustion engine. The new factory in sunderland is one example. There are big challenges though. Cost has been an issue. Electric cars are more expensive to buy than Petrol Or Diesel cars even if they are cheaper to run. But making batteries is getting easier and the industry expects a Tipping Point fairly soon. Batteries are coming down in price and plans to increase production of the uk as weve seen with the Nissan Announcement this week are going to help with that. So i think its probably made a decade before we reach the Tipping Point when an Electric Car replaces a Diesel Or Petrol car. Electric car replaces a Diesel Or Petrol car Electric Car replaces a Diesel Or Etrol car. , ,. , petrol car. The other issue is how to recharge petrol car. The other issue is how to recharge your petrol car. The other issue is how to recharge your battery. Petrol car. The other issue is how to recharge your battery. Range i to recharge your battery. Range anxiety has been a factor, making people reluctant to go electric. The gOvernment says there are currently more than 23,800 Public Charging points around the country including more than 4000 rapid charges. £1. 3 billion is being invested. But labour says is not enough and points out the independent committee on Climate Change says they should be 150,000 Public Charging points to 2025. So a big increase is needed. There are regional Disparities Tool with far more Charging Points in london than in some other parts of the country. Its notjust about motorways, there is the issue of charging at home. Its fine if you have a driveway but people who only have a driveway but people who only have access to on Street Parking need far more local schemes such as charges built into a lamp post. So the shift to Electric Cars is happening. The challenge is making sure the infrastructure keeps up with the pace of change. British tourists travelling to spain must, from today, present proof of a negative coronavirus test, or of double vaccination, in order to enter the country. Now its time for a look at the weather with Chris Fawkes. It may look like i havejust it may look like i have just stepped out into the caribbean but i havent. This is the sunshine from earlier on today in cornwall. Today, most of us will see brighter skies and sunshine but we do have some thick cloud. This is a Weather Front bringing some interesting weather and this Figure Cloud approaching the north of scotland. That is quite likely to bring outbreaks of rain to northern scotland Over the course of the day. That diagonal could bring rain to north wales and North West England. The showers will be more widespread and heaviest across the southern uplands in the far north england. Eastern areas also seeing some downpours. A warmer day generally. Overnight tonight, a few more showers coming and going but we will see this area of thundery rain moving up from the south west. Quite a Muggy Night and could see some fog patches developing across england and wales. Fresh for scotland and Northern Ireland. Into the weekend and a disturbed spell of weather on the way with widespread downpours. We have this thundery rain pushing northwards through the day followed ljy northwards through the day followed by showers in the showers across parts of england could bring 30 millimetres of rain injust parts of england could bring 30 millimetres of rain in just one parts of england could bring 30 millimetres of rain injust one hour and thats enough to bring some localised Surface Water flooding. Worse still, across the south west where the winds converge and lock this line of showers into the same kind of area and along this line we could see something like 40 to 80 millimetres of rain in one or two areas and that could cause some nasty flooding. That is a Months Worth of rain in the space of a few hours. Temperatures coming down a little bit. And of course saturday, england are playing ukraine in the quarterfinals of the rose and after a warm day temperatures coming down into the mid 20s in time for kick off. The sunday, it doesnt get any better. Widespread heavy showers and thunderstorms. Some of the heaviest in western scotland and Northern Ireland. The North West of england and wales are seeing some heavy downpours as well. Some gaps between the showers but Overall a rather disappointing looking weekend and next week, wet and windy for a time on monday and tuesday, the showers easing later in the week. This is Bbc News. The headlines. The Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer welcomes victory in the Batley And Spen By Election The Party won by just 323 votes. What a really important victory for Batley And Spen, of hope Over Division And Decency Over hatred. The case is to be dropped against two former soldiers facing Murder Charges from Northern Irelands troubles including from Bloody Sunday in 1972. Angela merkel has met borisjohnson at chequers. Among the topics theyve been discussing have been brexit and the potential of Covid Travel restrictions easing for britons travelling to germany. I personally believe that on the basis of this protocol and within the framework of how it was initiated we can find pragmatic solutions. Senior doctors in england are to be balloted on industrial action if the gOvernments proposed 1 Pay Rise Isnt improved. The England Team set off for rome for their clash with ukraine in the euro quarterfinals tomorrow. And the Space Race hots up Richard Branson aims to beat Jeff Bezos into orbit by nine days. Well speak to him from his carribean home in the next hour. Sir Keir Starmer says labour is back after The Partys narrow victory in the Batley And Spen By Election. In a close contest, Kim Leadbeater, the sister of the murdered mp Jo Cox, held the West Yorkshire Seat with a majority of just 323 votes. A narrow win, but one that really matters for labour. Some had written of The Partys chances of winning Batley And Spen but Kim Leadbeater managed to hold on and Labours Leader was delighted. When the Labour Party sticks to its core values, is rooted in its communities and pulls together, we can win, just as weve won here. This is the start, labour is back. If labour had lost here, the pressure on Keir Starmer would have increased significantly. There was even talk of a Leadership Challenge but, for now, breathing space. All Smiles Today but the campaign has been heated, sometimes ugly. Accusations of harassment, police accompanying candidates as they canvas support. The new mp says she wants to heal some of the division is. We need to do politics better. We need to do politics differently. There is no place for abuse, intimidation, you know, for me, personally, but actually for the people who were campaigning with me. Weve had things thrown at people, weve had an assault, you know, someones been arrested. Thats not what we need in our communities, what we need in our country. And if i canjust work a little bit through this role to try and improve things and try and show a different way, then i think thats really important. In batley this morning, the scale of the challenge was clear. We are divided and it will take a lot to get that back. I hope she shows her true colours and gets things done what she says to get done because, lets face it, where is batley going . Its going nowhere. Ill Give hera chance, ill Give everyone a chance, but time will tell. The result has particular significance for Kim Leadbeater s family her sisterJo Cox was the mp here when she was murdered by a far right extremist five years ago. But its also an important result for national politics. Labour held on despite losing thousands of votes to the former mp George Galloway, who finished third. This result will come as a huge relief to the Labour Party. Many were preparing for a loss, so a win, even a narrow one, will feel significant. But Keir Starmer still faces big questions about his leadership, about his vision for the country, about why he wants to be Prime Minister. So, while the Labour Leader will celebrate todays victory, it takes the pressure off for a while but doesnt remove it completely. Northern irelands public Prosecution Service is to drop cases against two army veterans who were facing Murder Charges from the troubles, including on Bloody Sunday in 1972. Soldier f is the only person facing prosecution but this morning the families of the two victims he was accused of murdering were told by Northern Irelands public Prosecution Service that the case against him will be discontinued because of the Way Evidence was collected at the time and in subsequent years. There were ten other cases against veterans that collapsed here in Northern Ireland a couple of months ago that prompted a review of the Way Evidence is gathered and presented in court and its that review that the public Prosecution Service decided it was not the right thing to proceed without court case, they did not have a realistic prospect of bringing a conviction and thats why that news was delivered to those families this morning and in doing that the prosecutor in Northern Ireland said he recognised those decisions would bring pain to victims and bereaved families who relentlessly sought justice and faced many setbacks but he said the impact of that Court Ruling was considered extremely carefully and that led to the conclusion that there was no longer a reasonable prospect of conviction and therefore it was not appropriate to continue with a case against Soldier F. That same summer. With a case against Soldier F. That same summer, a with a case against Soldier F. That same summer, a 15 year old, Daniel Hegarty, was shot twice in the head in londonderry. For the family. Absolutely. There was another for the family. Absolutely. There was another army for the family. Absolutely. There was another Army Operation for the family. Absolutely. There | was another Army Operation later that summer in which Daniel Hegarty was shot and killed and again that case was at an earlier stage, had not even gone to court yet, but his family have also been told this morning that the only person facing prosecution known as Soldier B, that case will also be discontinued and that has prompted disappointment from his family and the Family Solicitor gave this reaction earlier today. You can get away with the murder of a child if you are in the british army because the state will always protect you. The state will subvert the legal system and use it to their advantage and they have done so in the past. And then the illegitimate will be legitimised by the pps and the courts in the present day. The german chancellor Angela Merkel has said that britons who have had two covid 19 vaccinations should soon be able to travel to germany without going into quarantine on arrival. Mrs merkel met Prime Minister Boris Johnson today for talks at chequers on her last visit to the uk as head of the german Overnment-and-covid'>GOvernment And Covid Travel Restrictions were high on the agenda. We think that, in the foreseeable future, those who have received double jabs will then according to our Classification And Britain obviously is a high Incidence Area will be able to travel again without having to go into quarantine, we would like to encourage people to be vaccinated. In the beginning we did not have that much experience with this variant but we are dealing with it, and we are approaching this in the spirit that i set out in the variant is spreading quickly in germany too, but let me point out yet again, its not only germany that has Travel Restrictions, the uk too has quite a lot in order to protect its own citizens, and that is a continuous Learning Process that we undergo, we have to adjust time and again to the most recent development. The time and again to the most recent development development. The talks were an opportunity development. The talks were an opportunity to development. On the one hand we can maintain the integrity of the single market but on the other hand we can contribute to creating acceptable solutions for the people. It is honestly understandable that this was prolonged and its a good thing it was prolonged for another few months, and i think it should be possible for All Of Us to come to a pragmatic solution within this Grace Period and im optimistic that this can happen. Specifically because after brexit the uk has withdrawn from all that sort of co operation at the eu level, it did not sign any agreement on that in its exit treaty, so now its up to dealing with individual countries, so germany very much and it has been germanys approach, Chancellor Merkel has had meetings with vladimir putin in russia, she is seeking to build these relationships and hear particular talking about one based on shared values and a shared common approach internationally, tackling Climate Change, promoting democracy and the rule of law, so that was what she wanted to put in place Overall with this visit. , wanted to put in place Overall with this visit. ,. , this visit. We know the royal family have amongst them england Football Supporters so im sure that will come up but interestingly in her comments with borisjohnson, she said that she had pointed out to him that germany was very concerned, i think the words were that she told him that they had Grave Concern about the uks decision to have 60,000 fans at the semifinal and final is at wembley because the german view is that that is a real risk for becoming a super Spreader Event for covid. The german approach at matches in germany has been to limit numbers at a lower level than that, and that is something she clearly is concerned about. Thank ou ve clearly is concerned about. Public Health England has published the gOvernments latest weekly R Number which is estimated to have fallen to between1. 1 and 1. 3. The latest figures also show new cases of the Delta Coronavirus Variant have risen by 46 in the uk in the past week to almost 162,000. Earlier, my Colleague Jane Hill spoke to our health correspondent, katherine dacosta. In the week to last saturday estimates suggest 250,000 250,000 people would have tested positive for covid, and that is equivalent to around one in 250. The more infectious Delta Variant is driving up infectious Delta Variant is driving up cases and accounts for 95 of infections in the uk, and the infections in the uk, and the Infection Rate in england is highest Infection Rate in england is highest in the North East and North West and among those aged 16 24. While cases are still rising, hospital admissions and deaths are rising at the same rates and data suggest that is down to vaccines but health experts are still worried about this rapid increase in infections because not everyone is double jabbed, some people have a weakened immune system so they are still vulnerable, there is the risk of long covid, and higher cases means its more likely we will see new variants emerge. Ministers insist we are still on track to lift restrictions on the 19th ofjuly but the advice is still to be careful so remember hands, face, space, fresh air and to get both jabs. The gOvernment has already offered most of those working in the Health Service in england a 1 rise this year. Senior doctors say they will ballot for industrial action if that figure is not at least 4 . Everybody who has worked incredibly hard during the pandemic needs to be supported. When inflation is 4 , these are massive pay cuts that people are doing, despite having gone through a really, really difficult time, and we shouldnt be levelling down across groups, everybody deserves a decent, fair pay uplift. Consultants say industrial action could mean stopping both paid and unpaid Overtime. That could damage attempts by hospitals to reduce long waiting lists caused by covid. My first visit to a hospital on the job. For the new health secretary, its another concern as he starts his first full month on thejob. In the past, the gOvernment has said a rise of 1 is affordable at a time when pay elsewhere in the public sector has been frozen. It is waiting for independent Pay Review bodies cOvering nhs workers to make final recommendations before deciding whether to increase that offer. But demands for higher pay are coming notjust from senior doctors. The Nursing Union is calling for a 12. 5 Pay Rise this year and may also ballot for industrial action. We have a massive shortage of nurses. Weve had a year like no other year. People are exhausted, morale is really low and the nhs has got a lot of ground to recOver. Its absolutely vital that theres a significant Pay Award for nurses and other Health Care workers this year in order that we retain all of those staff. Pay talks are also under way in wales, where the gOvernment has said it will not set a 1 ceiling on Pay Awards. In Northern Ireland and scotland, all Nhs Staff have been offered a £500 bonus this year and longer Term Pay negotiations are continuing. The family of Saskia Jones, who was murdered by a convicted terrorist at a Prisoner Rehabilitation Conference in central london, are calling on the leaders of the organisation behind the event to step down. Saskias uncles say the family will be distressed and insulted if the Cambridge University academics stay in post. Theyve been speaking to our correspondent, zoe conway. People need to know what has actually happened here. The enormity of whats happened and what a devastating effect it has had on ourfamily and on a number of other people. Convicted terrorist Usman Khan surrounded on london bridge. Three men armed with a Fire Extinguisher and a Narwhal Tusk tackle him to the ground. Nearby in Fishmongers Hall, Saskia Jones and Jack Merritt lay dying. Khan had stabbed them with knives strapped to his wrists. Just two hours earlier, he was sat at a table chatting to saskia. Both were guests at a prison education event. As a teenager, Usman Khan was convicted of plotting to set up a terrorist Training Camp and went to prison. Shortly before his release in 2018, m15 had intelligence he was planning another attack. He was monitored in the community by the Probation Service, the police and m15. They allowed him to go to Fishmongers Hall that day without a police escort. Learning together is a theoretically informed, values led educational initiative. Amy ludlow and Ruth Armstrong are the directors of the Cambridge University learning together programme, which teaches prisoners and university Students Side by side and which held the event at Fishmongers Hall. Im going to explain to you how i got introduced to learning together. Khan became one of their students in prison. Amy and ruth, amongst others, saw him as a Success Story. They put him on their leaflets, they gave him a computer. I think people saw the advantage of having him as somebody they had involved in their programme. They just lost sight of the danger to the public, their employees and anyone else associated with the programme. At the inquest into saskias death, learning together said it was the responsibility of the prison and Probation Service to assess Khans Risk and theyd relied on those agencies expertise. Do you think Ruth Armstrong and Amy Ludlow can continue to lead this organisation . They shouldnt be leading an organisation that got something badly and tragically wrong. From a Family Point of view, wed be very distressed, upset and, frankly, insulted if they did. Amy ludlow and Ruth Armstrong received several awards for their work, which was also praised by the prisons inspectorate but the organisation is now suspended whilst Cambridge University carries out a review. In a statement, Cambridge University said. Ive lived for 20 years longer than saskia did and i view what she achieved in her short life as a far greater value than anything ive achieved so far and building upon that is. Is something that i and were focused upon. British tourists travelling to spain must, from today, present proof of a negative coronavirus test, or of double vaccination, in order to enter the country. Our Correspondent Guy Hedgecoe gave us the latest from madrid. Just a few weeks ago, a month ago, the Overnment'>Spanish GOvernment lifted all restrictions for british travellers into the country because it was desperate for british tourists to start coming Over for the summer season. The uk and spain the single biggest Tourist Market but Over the last few days the situation changed, the Overnment'>Spanish GOvernment has expressed concern at the rising cases of covid in the uk and a particular concern at the spread of the Delta Variant. As a result the Overnment'>Spanish GOvernment has of today has introduced these new measures which as you say you have to present either a certificate of Vaccination Or Proof of a negative Covid Test Over the last 48 hours to get into the country. All this is happening in the same week that the Overnment'>British GOvernment has added the balearic islands to its local green list so that means that people from the uk can travel there another return to the uk they do not have to quarantine, so that is a huge incentive to british travellers to go to a beat, majorca and so on but, when they do go there, when they arrive, they will have to undergo these new restrictions which have been introduced here in spain today. The England Squad flies to rome this afternoon for their euro 2020 quarterfinal against Ukraine Tomorrow night. Fans have been urged not to travel there because of coronavirus restrictions, but some lucky supporters who live in italy will be at the game to see whether england can clinch a place in the semifinals. Our Sports Correspondent olly foster reports. After the euphoria of wembleyjust three nights ago, the players are refreshed and refocused. The mantra running through this England Squad is that the victory against germany will count for very little unless they can get it right against Ukraine Tomorrow in the quarterfinals. If they do, then it wont be like this. Tuesday night will live long in the memory but, in what will be their first away game in the tournament, therell be no travelling fans. Rome be much quieter. Well, it was immense the other night. I thought the fans were incredible. But, actually, i think that would be really hard to replicate three days later, so i actually think its a good thing for us to go away from wembley to. This game will be about us. We might have some support in the stadium but, if we do, its not going to be vast numbers, by the sounds of it. The capacity at the stadio olimpico is capped at 16,000 tomorrow but, with strict quarantine restrictions in place, the English Fa didnt take up their allocation of 2,500 tickets. Travel is not being encouraged. Translation passengers arriving from britain will be checked at the border by the police. They will be reminded that there is a mandatory five Day Quarantine and they will be asked for the address of their home, hotel or private house where the Self Isolation will take place. But there will be some English Fans, uk nationals, who live in Italy Or Mainland europe have been able to get tickets. This is dawn, a Rome Resident of 35 years. Come on, england youre young, youre fresh, youre gorgeous. You can do this for us we need this to happen were in Rome And Rome belongs to italy and the italians but, on saturday night, its going to belong to england well, i hope so, anyway. Over 20 Million watched the win against germany. The fan parks and pubs will be packed again tomorrow englands progress creating an economic boom around every big screen. The players are aware of the growing support, just as they grow into this tournament themselves. The low Profile Group Stage wins before they announce their arrival at The Party with that victory this week. Theyre one win away from making it back to back major semifinals for the first time but, first things first, that mantra again get things right tomorrow. Gareth southgate has a fully fit squad available, all 26 raring to 90, squad available, all 26 raring to go, not many nations heading into the quarterfinals have that luxury. Now its time for a look at the weather with Chris Fawkes most will see warm spells of sunshine to take us through the afternoon, top temperatures 18 24 but across northern scotland turning cloudy, outbreaks of rain developing as well. Showers and thunderstorms widespread across the southern uplands of scotland, the far north of england where there will be showers elsewhere, eastern england perhaps one or two for the north wales and North West England, and the odd one for Northern Ireland as well. 18 424 , warm in the sunshine if you see it. Overnight a band of thundery rain will extend from the south west and that will push its way northwards as we go through saturday and what follows is heavy showers across england, these could bring 30 millimetres of rain in the space of one hour so localise Surface Water a possibility but its worst across the south west, here the winds will lock a band of thundery rain in the same area so Storms Hour after hour, worst Case Scenario up to 80 millimetres of rain and that would bring flooding problems. Hello, this is Bbc News. The headlines the Labour Leader, Sir Keir Starmer, welcomes victory in the Batley And Spen By Election. The party won by just 323 votes. The german chancellor, Angela Merkel, has said she expects people from britain who are fully vaccinated will soon be able to travel to germany without having to quarantine on arrival. Sport and for a full round up from the bbc sport centre, heres jane dougall. Good afternoon. England have left their Training Base at St Georges Park to fly to rome this afternoon in prepartion for their quarter final match against ukraine in the euros. So far england are unbeaten and havent conceeded a goal in the tournament yet. Waiting for england is our reporter, john watson, whos already in rome for us. John, will Gareth Southgate rest players for this match do you think . It will be interesting to see what he does. He employed wingbacks against germany to match up against them. I guess in a Game Tomorrow against the ukraine they will dominate possession so we might see a change in formation. I dont think he will rest players. I think he will stick with the players who have got this far. England lost left their Training Base this morning. They trained there this morning and will fly from Birmingham Airport and will fly from Birmingham Airport and will arrive in rome a bit later on. On that flight will be Raheem Sterling who has been central to england because my performances with three goals in this tournament. The last crucial win against germany. Harry kane of Course Scoring as well and he will be desperate he was desperate to get off the mark and he did so. I guess it will be the likes of sterling and Harry Kane that Gareth Southgate will turn to in this match tomorrow. The one Thing England to have now is momentum and whilst this will be the first match which they have played away from home and they wont of course have the huge support that cheered them on at wembley against germany, Gareth Southgate has been very keen throughout the tournament to stress he is not worried about the external factors or the number of fans or where they are playing, he might be worried about the conditions. Its very hot at the moment. Its about 30 degrees and it could be 28 or 29 degrees tomorrow. When you talk about those possible changes, the changes we could see the use of more substitutes because of england to tire and it will be pretty hot he has got a very strong bench to draw upon with the likes of Phil Foden and jack grealish. So it will be interesting to see what he does. I think he will probably stick with the backbone of that team that has this far. ,. ,. ,. ,. ,. , ~ this far. John watson in rome, Thank Ou ve this far. John watson in rome, Thank You very much chelsea Womens Manager Emma Hayes has signed a new contract with the club. Ill have more for you in the next hour. Sir Richard Branson is a step closer to winning the race into space. Hes hoping to blast beyond the earths atmosphere on 11th ofjuly, nine days ahead of the amazon founderJeff Bezos. Both buinessmen have created Space Tourism companies offering some pretty expensive flights. Sir richard will be a passenger in the back of the Unity Rocket Plane his virgin galactic company has been developing in the us for the better part of two decades. Lets hear more now from the man himself, sir Richard Branson, whos the founder of the company virgin. Why do you want to do this . Its something ive wanted to do since i was a young kid with my Dad And Sister looking up at the moon and realising they were to real people standing on the moon and i realised gOvernments are not that interested in building spaceships for you and me to go to space so 17 years ago we embarked on building our own spaceships, building rockets that could take these spaceships into space and it has been a long voyage, it has had tears and joy, but in ten days from now we will finally be going to space. Share days from now we will finally be going to space days from now we will finally be going to space. I going to space. Are you nervous . I am not nervous going to space. Are you nervous . The 17 years i have been trying not to get excited about it and to be honest when i heard earlier today that we were going to space, i went through the roof. I am incredibly excited. Millions of people are watching this programme and they would live one day to become astronauts and that is the ultimate challenge for us, is to build more spaceships and bring the price down so that many people can one day become astronauts. Making sure we can monitor degradation of rainforests, check on Climate Change, making sure. Anyway, there are numerous things including making sure you and i can talk on a programme like this. And as far as the ordinary person who could never dream of going to space, if you go back to the 1920s people were saying exactly the same thing about Air Travel. But now not everyone can afford to fly on a plane but a lot of people can. The german chancellor, Angela Merkel, has said she expects people from britain who are fully vaccinated will soon be able to travel to germany without having to quarantine on arrival. Two leading charities have accused the gOvernment of creating a two Tier Welfare System for people with a terminal illness. A review of rules which restrict fast Track Access to benefits to people who have only six months to live was launched two years ago, in england and wales, but it still hasnt been published. Scotland and Northern Ireland have already taken steps to scrap the rule. Our political correspondent Helen Catt explains. To have to ask your consultant, do you think i may only have six months to live . , when really they Cant Answer that its a very, very difficult question and very difficult to live with. Helen nicell from watford is living with terminal cancer. When she changed from an old benefit to the newer personal Independence Payment, the money she got was reduced. Under current rules, only people who can get a doctor to say they have less than six months left to live can get the higher rates of payment and fast Track Access. The cancer s in my spine and at any stage it could spread into one of my organs. Youve retired from Work And Youve got a Budget And Youve got no other income. Not knowing actually whats going to come in, thats actually quite difficult to budget for, really. Helens benefits were restored last september, but mps and charities say many others face similar struggles. What this campaign is all about, really, is allowing terminally ill people to access their benefits in a quicker way. Not to have to prove that they have less than six months to live, to do it in a kind of kinder way so that they can get higher benefits, quicker and go through less assessments in the future. The nature of illness and of cancer means that it strikes everybody i theres nobody thats immune from it. Maureen dew and her Husband Glyn retired as vicars after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Her personal Independence Payment was removed for several months after a reassessment. Glyn lost his carer s allowance during that time too. During the process of applying for pip or going through a re evaluation for any type of benefits, one almost has to unstrip the layers of protection that surround you both psychologically and in terms of scrutinising what your day to Day Experience is. So, for instance, you know, its. It can be quite dehumanising and robs you of your self respect. Campaigners have been pushing for a change to the rules for years. The gOvernment launched a review injuly 2019, which still hasnt been published. Ministers have repeatedly promised change. The department is committed to publishing the outcome of the evaluation and it will be announced in due course. I understand the delay has been frustrating and i remain absolutely committed to delivering an improved Benefit System for claimants that are nearing The End of their lives. We will be able to make changes very, very soon. The issue for terminally ill people in england and wales is housing. Northern ireland announced earlier this week that it would start the process of passing a law before may to extend the six months to 12 months and scrap assessments. In scotland, the scottish gOvernment has already changed the law to get rid of the need for a time limit on Life Expectancy and further guidance is expected later this month. But in england and wales, theres still no timeframe. A spokesperson for the department for work and pensions said the gOvernment was committed to supporting people nearing The End of their lives. Its priority was dealing with peoples claims quickly and compassionately, which it had continued to do throughout the pandemic. For some, though, a few months can really make all the difference. Helen catt, Bbc News. A 23 year old man has been charged with common assault after englands chief medical officer, professor chris whitty, was accosted in a park in central london. Lewis hughes, whos from east london, will appear before magistrates later this month. The incident took place last Sunday Evening in stjames park. Australia is halving the number of people allowed into the country from Overseas, following leaks in its covid quarantine system. The weekly intake will be cut to around 3,000 people and residents remain banned from leaving the country. From sydney, shaimaa khalil has more. If you are an australian stranded Overseas, this is not the news you wanted to wake up to. From the middle ofjuly, the already very complicated journey for thousands trying to get home is about to get more difficult. To temporarily reduce commercial passenger arrivals, to all major ports by 50 from current caps, to reduce the pressure on quarantine facilities due to the increased risks of the Delta Strain of the virus. Australia already has very tight border restrictions. Anyone who comes in has to go into Hotel Quarantine first. These have been the two lines of defence for the country and what has allowed it to contain the spread of covid 19, but they have not been without contrOversy. Many, especially those separated from their families, have criticised the border closures. They have also criticised the gOvernment making exemptions for athletes of celebrities at a time. Others have asked how long this can go on for, how sustainable it is for australia to effectively seal itself off from the world . There have also been virus leaks from Hotel Quarantine and they have resulted in a number of outbreaks here. And of course there is the Delta Variant. It is spreading far quicker than anticipated here and is posing a big challenge for health officials around the country. The biggest cluster is here in sydney where i am, we are going into our second week of lockdown. This is a completely different picture in a country where only a a few weeks ago life seemed to be going back to near normal here. Things have changed quite quickly. What makes things quite difficult as well if the lower rate of vaccinations. Less than 8 of the population have taken the vaccination. And there are a number of reasons for this. Yes, there is complacency because australia had done so well. There is hesitancy among some people. But there has also been a lack of a consistent, urgent Overnment-message'>GOvernment Message for people to get vaccinated. There has been a number of issues with supplies, especially for the pfizerjob and mixed messaging around the Astrazeneca Vaccine and which age groups should go for it. All of it makes for a confused, shambolic picture when it comes to the Vaccine Roll out. This is what the gOvernment is trying to change right now with this four Phase Pathway 20 covid 19. Because as it stands australia two covid 19 Success Story is looking rather vulnerable. With the rapid growth of renewable energy and electric vehicles in recent years, its no surprise the demand for the metals they rely on is soaring. Could the Answer Lie deep underground in cornwall . Our Science Correspondent Rebecca Morelle takes a look. Heading underground into cornwall s south crofty mine. We are about 120 metres below the surface right now and we are actually beneath the surrounding water table. All you can see here is basically the sheet of mineralisation that was mined. Work stopped decades ago, but these caverns could soon open up again. Anything with an electric connection, a Circuit Board or whatever, has tin in it, so all of these objectives and uses that we are using to get to this carbon neutral economy require tin to some degree and to have that domestic supply on your doorstep, it makes sense to see this mine into production. Above ground too, new methods of Mineral Extraction are being trialled. Lithium, essentialfor batteries, is abundant in the south west. This borehole reaches about a kilometre beneath my feet, where there are lithium rich rocks. As the water down there washes Over them, the mineral seeps out into the brine. That is brought back up and i have got some of the liquid here and it is from this that the lithium is extracted. The project is currently at the pilot stage. The aim is to have it entirely powered by renewable energy to make the Process Carbon neutral. Right now, lithium comes from Australia And South america, but the company thinks it could eventually supply around a third of the uks future lithium needs. A typical mobile phone has about two or three grams of lithium in it, whereas an electric vehicle can have up to 50 kilos, so it really is a huge Step Change in Lithium Demand and that is why there is the need to look for it in places where we havent looked for it before. Two pieces of rock here that are both lithium ore. The World Bank estimates we will need a 500 increase in the global production of lithium by 2050. We should work towards a circular economy where we just recycle the metals we use, but at this moment in time we cant do that. Its just the growth is too fast, its too rapid, and to hit the target of net zero, we need those technologies now, so i think its inevitablel we will continue mining. But mining in the future will have to be different to minimise and repair any environmental damage. Experts say a green revolution is pointless unless the planet is protected in the process. Rebecca morelle, Bbc News. Now its time for a look at the weather. It may look like i havejust it may look like i have just stepped out in the caribbean but this was the sunshine earlier in cornwall. Most of us will see some Sunshine Today but we do have some thick cloud and where the front bringing interesting weather and this Figure Cloud approaching north of scotland. I think that is quite likely to bring our picks of rain to northern scotland Over the course of the day. That diagonal i showed you could bring rain to north wales and North West England but otherwise its sunshine and showers. The showers their heaviest across the southern uplands in the far north of england. Eastern areas also picking up england. Eastern areas also picking up and down a woman to generally. Overnight tonight, few showers coming and going but we will see this area of rain moving up from the south west. Quite a Muggy Night and we might see some fog patches developing across england and wales. Fresher for Northern Ireland and scotland. Into the weekend and a disturbed spell of weather is on the way with widespread downpours. We have this thundery rain pushing northwards through the day followed by showers in the showers across parts of england could bring 30 millimetres of rain in the space of an hour and thats enough to bring some localised Surface Water flooding. Worst still, across the south west way the winds converge they lock this line of showers into they lock this line of showers into the same kind of areas and along this line we could see something like 40 to 80 millimetres of rain in one or two areas and that is enough to cause some nasty flooding. The headlines. The Labour Leader, Sir Keir Starmer, welcomes victory in the Batley And Spen By Election The Party won by just 323 votes. What a really important victory for Batley And Spen, of hope Over Division And Decency Over hatred. The case is to be dropped against two former soldiers facing Murder Charges from Northern Irelands troubles, including from Bloody Sunday, in 1972. Angela merkel has met borisjohnson at chequers. Among the topics theyve been discussing have been brexit and the potential of Covid Travel restrictions easing for britons travelling to germany. We think that, in the foreseeable future, those who have received double jabs will then, according to our classification and Now Britain obviously is a high Incidence Area will be able to travel again without having to go into quarantine. The England Team set off for rome for their clash with ukraine in the euro quarterfinals tomorrow. And the Space Race hots up Richard Branson aims to beat fellow billionaireJeff Bezos into orbit by nine days. There were many Over the last few days who were predicting that labour would lose this seat. Some in the Labour Party thought as late as this morning that that might be the case and, if that had happened, it would have sparked a crisis for the leadership which has been under a lot of pressure since the local elections and since the loss of the hartlepool By Election back in may. Instead, Over the last few hours, Keir Starmer has been celebrating in the constituency a result which he hopes will Give The Party a new lease of life. A narrow win, but one that really matters for labour. Some had written off The Partys chances of winning Batley And Spen but Kim Leadbeater managed to hold on and Labours Leader was delighted. Accusations of harassment, police accompanying candidates as they canvass support. The new mp says she wants to heal some of the divisions. Northern irelands public Prosecution Service is to drop cases against two army veterans who were facing Murder Charges from the troubles, including on Bloody Sunday, in 1972. Our correspondent in londonderry is danjohnson. What has caused these Landmark Legacy prosecutions to collapse . This is all about the Way Evidence was gathered at the time, statements and the way they would be presented in these trials now nearly 50 years on. Two previous trials of veterans collapsed a couple of months ago that prompted a review of the way these legacy prosecutions were being brought forward so prosecutors have looked again at how evidence was gathered, what was represented in court, and have decided that key bits of evidence would be ruled inadmissible in those trials and thatis inadmissible in those trials and that is why they have decided to call a halt now, so we are talking about two soldiers in particular, Soldier B and Soldier F. If we talk about Bloody Sunday, which happened here in derry in 1972, that was a day when soldiers from the parachute regiment opened fire on a Crowd Writing after a civil Rights March here, 13 people were shot dead that day, a 14th died later, 50 more were wounded, and Soldier F was the only person to face prosecution in relation to those killings. He has always denied murdering anyone but in reviewing the Evidence Today Northern Irelands top prosecutor from the public Prosecution Service said, i recognise these decisions will bring further pain to victims and bereaved families who have relentlessly sought justice but said the impact of the Court Ruling on those previous cases was considered carefully and that led to a conclusion that a reasonable prospect of conviction no longer existed in proceedings against both Soldier B and Soldier F, so those two merger charges against Soldier F in relation to the killing of the two men have been dropped, their families were told that news this morning, and then there is a case involving Soldier B in relation to the death of Daniel Hegarty, a 15 year old who was shot here in another Army Operation later in 1972 and his family have also been Given that disappointing news this morning and their solicitor reacted outside the meeting with the prosecutor earlier today. You can get away with the murder of a child if you are in the british army because the state will always protect you. The state will subvert the legal system and use it to their advantage, and they have done so in the past. And then the illegitimate will be legitimised by the pps and the courts. It has been a long campaign for justice for those families and in a statement on behalf of the bloody Sunday Family said this decision represents another damning indictment of the british Justice System and said as far as they are concerned that she was far from concluded and say they will fight on, but this news will come as a relief to those two veterans in particular and their supporters and the former Veterans Minister, the mp, wrote on twitter earlier that another Veterans Life had been ruined, he had been investigated and dropped and investigated and dropped, he had been charged and it had been dropped, he wrote, this Overnments-shame'>GOvernments Shame has been highlighted in another tragic case for all sides. And its another reminder that even half a century on healing the pain of events like Bloody Sunday, the worst events of the trouble is, is still really difficult. , ~ the trouble is, is still really difficult. ~ ,. , the trouble is, is still really difficult. , ~ ,. ,. , the trouble is, is still really difficult. , the german chancellor, Angela Merkel, has said that britons who have had two covid 19 vaccinations should soon be able to travel to germany without going into quarantine on arrival. Mrs merkel met Prime Minister Boris Johnson today for talks at chequers on her last visit to the uk as head of the german gOvernment, and Covid Travel restrictions were high on the agenda. We think that, in the foreseeable future, those who have received double jabs will then according to our classification, and britain obviously is a high Incidence Area, will be able to travel again without having to go into quarantine, we would like to encourage people to be vaccinated. In the beginning, we did not have that much experience with this variant but we are dealing with it, and we are approaching this in the spirit that i set out and the variant is spreading quickly in germany too, but let me point out yet again, its not only germany that has imposed Travel Restrictions, the uk too has done quite a lot in order to protect its own citizens, and that is a continuous Learning Process that we undergo, we have to adjust time and again to the most recent development. The talks were also an opportunity to discuss the disagreements Over the brexit nothern Ireland Protocol. Mrs merkel said that the pragmatic solutions could be found. I personally believe that on the basis of this protocol and within the framework of how it was negotiated we can find pragmatic solutions. On the one hand, we can maintain the integrity of the single market but on the other hand we can contribute to creating acceptable solutions for the people. It is obviously understandable that this was prolonged and its a good thing it was prolonged for another few months, and i think it should be possible for All Of Us to come to a pragmatic solution within this Grace Period, and im optimistic that this can happen. Our political correspondent, damian grammaticas, is at westminster. She was talking about pragmatic solutions and ever the politician, even though she is on her Farewell Tour, is trying to reframe the debate and potentially the relationship between the uk and germany on her exit. Yes, and on the issue of Northern Ireland, it was noticeable, the question put to her was, can you envisage rewriting parts of that at all for the uk . Borisjohnson said in his comments that he believed there were still problems, there were many issues that remain and need to be fixed, and he talked about sausages and medicines. The eu is moving to some of those, Chancellor Merkel talked about the extension to this great Grace Period but she did not Give any sense that there is any opening to rewrite the agreement which Boris Johnson Oversaw, agreed and the german view, Mrs Merkel was saying that under that agreement as it stands, it can be made to work, so that was a fairly diplomatic but firm rebuttal of that idea but, as you say, beyond that, underneath all of this, what she was pointing to, and she came out of her meeting, was and she came out of her meeting, was a new chapter that is beginning after brexit and what she was doing here with this meeting was she was trying to find new formats, establishing regular gOvernment contacts to cooperate on foreign policy, defence policy, dealing with china and russia, and that means things like a Yearlyjoint Cabinet Meeting that will now happen, which is all about Mrs Merkel before leaving office trying to build this new structure after brexit for cooperation between the uk and european countries. But Given that it has proven so difficult since brexit happened, what chance has any successor of hers of doing any better . T successor of hers of doing any better . ~ ~ , ~ ~ 3 better . I think Mrs Merkels approach better . I think Mrs Merkels approach has better . I think Mrs Merkels approach has always better . I think Mrs Merkels approach has always been. Better . I think Mrs Merkels approach has always been dealing with russia and vladimir putin, dealing with the united states and President Trump was always a slow, steady but firm approach, and that is pretty much what she laid out here, she was saying that this was a beginning to find new formats and lay the foundations for something in future, talking about finding pragmatic solutions for Northern Ireland, so all of that is that steady, cautious approach that she is well known for, but where she was not cautious was where she said she was talking about the euro 2020 Football Championship and said she had Grave Concerns about the Overnment'>Uk GOvernments decision to allow so many spectators to attend the semifinal and final matches which will be at wembley because the german view is that poses a serious risk of spreading covid, and she said she had raised that with Boris Johnson. , said she had raised that with Boris Johnson. ,. ,. , johnson. Certainly, there was a division between johnson. Certainly, there was a division between the johnson. Certainly, there was a division between the two johnson. Certainly, there was a division between the two on. Johnson. Certainly, there was a L Division between the two on that issue. Thanks very much. Now, its fair to say theres a bit of national pride in the air a day away from englands Euros Quarter finals match against ukraine. And, not one to be outdone, the Prime Minister has has shown his support to the team by posing on a St Georges Flag outside number 10 downing street. Double thumbs up from borisjohnson there, and he also took the time to sign it as well. I dont know how long that will be before that is on ebay, a bit of memorabilia for you there. The headlines on Bbc News. The Labour Leader, Sir Keir Starmer, welcomes victory in the Batley And Spen By Election The Party won by just 323 votes. The case is to be dropped against two former soldiers facing Murder Charges from Northern Irelands troubles, including from Bloody Sunday, in 1972. The german chancellor, Angela Merkel, has said she expects people from britain who are fully vaccinated will soon be able to travel to germany without having to quarantine on arrival. I want to bring you some pictures we are getting from windsor, live pictures here. They are not life pictures here. They are not life pictures but from the very recent past, i can tell you that much, of Angela Merkel, who has been to meet the Queen Today, she has had a busy schedule because she was with the Prime Minister not long before at chequers, talking Travel And Trade and the northern Ireland Protocol, and the northern Ireland Protocol, and she has gone off to see the queen as well today, the two met not so very long ago in cornwall for the g7 summit, and they have met many times before, in fact, the chancellor has been to britain 22 times since 2005 when she took office. She has pretty much dominated the last 16 years of politics across europe and she will be leaving in the autumn, so she is here for the very last time in the uk, meeting the Prime Minister and the Queen Today. I want to bring you some breaking news, the daily figures for coronavirus cases in britain. Here they are, britain has reported on Friday 27,125 New covid 19 cases. That compares to 27,989 cases the day before so a slight drop in the number of new covid 19 cases, and 27 deaths within 28 days of a positive test, that compares to 22 deaths reported a day earlier, so those are the very latest figures on coronavirus cases for you, so a very slight drop in the number of new covid Cases Day on day, but a slight rise in the number of deaths, 27 deaths within 28 days of deaths, 27 deaths within 28 days of a positive test, those are the very latest official gOvernment figures for you. Public Health England has published the gOvernments latest weekly R Number, which is estimated to have fallen to between 1. 1 and 1. 3. The latest figures also show new cases of the Delta Coronavirus Variant have risen by 46 in the uk in the past week to almost 162,000. Earlier, my colleague, jane hill, spoke to our health correspondent, katherine dacosta. In the week to last saturday estimates suggest 257,000 people would have tested positive for covid, and that is equivalent to around one in 250. The more infectious Delta Variant is driving up cases and accounts for 95 of infections in the uk, and the Infection Rate in england is still highest in the North East and North West and among those aged 16 24. While cases are still rising, hospital admissions and deaths arent rising at the same rates and data suggest that is down to vaccines but health experts are still worried about this rapid increase in infections because not everyone is double jabbed, some people have a weakened immune system so they are still vulnerable, there is the risk of long covid, and higher cases means its more likely we will see new variants emerge. Ministers insist we are still on track to lift restrictions on the 19th ofjuly, but the advice is still to be careful so remember hands, face, space, fresh air and to get both jabs. A 23 year old man has been charged with common assault after englands chief medical officer, professor chris whitty, was accosted in a park in central london. Lewis hughes, whos from east london, will appear before magistrates later this month. The incident took place last Sunday Evening in stjames park. Senior doctors in england are to be asked whether they want to take industrial action Over pay. Consultants are angry about a proposed 1 rise. Ministers say theyre committed to increasing salaries for Nhs Staff but that pay for other public sector workers has been frozen. Heres our health correspondent, jim reed. Its been an extraordinary yearfor the nhs. Now, after 18 months of covid, attention is turning once again to the issue of staff pay. I want to bring you some pictures from windsor castle. Showers and thunderstorms widespread across the southern uplands of scotland, the far north of england but there will be showers elsewhere, eastern england, perhaps one or two for the north wales and North West England, and the odd one for Northern Ireland as well. 18 24 , warm in the sunshine if you see it. Overnight, a band of thundery rain will extend from the south west and that will push its way northwards as we go through saturday and what follows is heavy showers across england, these could bring 30 millimetres of rain in the space of one hour so localised Surface Water a possibility, but its worst across the south west, here the winds will lock a band of thundery rain in the same area, so Storms Hour after hour, worst Case Scenario up to 80 millimetres of rain and that would bring flooding problems. How can i have closure without being able to bury them if i dont get the body . What do i do . Jill and i want them to know that were with them and the countrys with them. Now, pablo tries to hold on to memories of happier times. In the days that have passed since the building where his Mother And Grandmother lived crashed to the ground, rescue teams have been working around the clock, painstakingly removing rubble, searching for survivors. It is a dangerous and demanding task, both physically and emotionally. We are human beings and we are dealing with human beings beneath the surface. And we know that we look for them and we do the best to get to them. But still, the thought that under all this concrete, all this steel, there is a person, maybe a little boy that is buried there, its very difficult to fail to understand. The families of those still unaccounted for have been to visit the site. And some have told me that seeing the homes that they used to visit reduced to rubble with their own eyes, is helping them now to start to prepare for the worst. All of them, though, have one question how long . How long can someone possibly survive in there . Its a question no one can answer, but they were able to see whats being done to reach those trapped in the twisted Metal And Concrete before the hope they cling to fades completely. Canadian authorities are battling wildfires after the extreme heatwave thats hit the west of the country. On tuesday the town of Lytton Recorded Canadas highest ever temperature of nearly fifty degrees celsius. Leading climate scientists say the unprecedented heatwave is almost certainly a consequence of global warming. From edmonton, Brandy Yanchyk reports. The hotter temperatures across western canada have led to destruction in the small western canadian town of lytton in british columbia when a wild fire broke out causing an evacuation and then destroyed most of the town and damaging a nearby hydropower station. He won set a record of 49. 6 celsius on tuesday. The previous high in canada was 45 celsius. In british columbia, at least 486 sudden deaths were reported Over five days. According to the Bc Coroners service that is nearly three times more than usual Over that period. This prolonged, dangerous and historic heatwave has also affected the province of alberta. Daytime high temperatures have been above 30 degrees celsius. In edmonton on thursday, which was canada day, residents flocked to spray packs, trying to cool off. So there have been some deaths in bc and any time you have people that end up passing because of something like a heatwave, which is avoidable with getting inside, with hydration, you know, it really hurt and of course we dont want to see that sort of thing happened. Amy has a new baby, and says it has been really hard swaddling her child in the hot weather and getting her to go to sleep. This is unusual for edmonton. I always ask myself in wintertime by i still live here, because when it is 30, ijust want to stay inside and the fact that it is a 70 degrees different from 30 to Plus 40 is crazy. The high temperatures have been hazardous for those who are homeless. Earlier this week, the city of edmonton activated its extreme weather response, where police officers Give out bottles of water to vulnerable people they come across. Volunteers likejulie have also been driving around giving out Water And Pizza. It to get extremely hot and there are people out here, they dont have food, water or shelter, and it is so sad. So we are delivering Water And Pizza to as many people as we can get to and hopefully that helps them a bit this hot weather has really surprise people here in western canada. It is very unusual and people are not prepared. Many do not have Air Conditioning and they are cOvering their windows, using fans and moving down to the cooler basements. This weekend it says it is going to be cooler in the forecast and people are looking forward to that Break And Hope that this hot weather is not a sign for temperatures for the future. With the rapid growth of renewable energy and electric vehicles in recent years, its no surprise the demand for the metals they rely on, is soaring. Sir Richard Branson is a step closer to winning the race into space. Jeff bezos s flight is scheduled for the 20th ofjuly and then Richard Branson comes out and says its on the 11th. Now its time for a look at the weather with Chris Fawkes. Hello there. Well, it may look like ivejust stepped out into the caribbean, but of course i havent. This was the sunshine from earlier today in cornwall. And today is a day when most of us will see brighter skies and sunshine pushing in. We do have some thicker cloud though, this diagonal line is an old whether front which will bring some interesting weather and this thicker cloud approaching the north of scotland, i think that is quite likely to bring outbreaks of rain to northern scotland Over the course of the day today. That diagonal i showed you could bring an odd spot of rain to north wales and North West England but otherwise its sunshine and showers. The showers will be most widespread and at their heaviest across the southern uplands and the far north of england. Eastern areas of england also picking up some downpours. A warmer day generally. Temperatures between 20c And 24c for many of us. Overnight tonight, a few more showers coming and going but then we will see this area of thundery rain moving from the south west. It will be quite a Muggy Night and we could see some fog patches developing across england and wales. Fresher for scotland and Northern Ireland. Around 11 to 13 degrees here. Into the weekend and a particularly disturbed spell of weather is on the way with widespread downpours. We have got this thundery rain which is going to be pushing northwards through the day, followed by showers. And the showers across parts of england could bring 30 millimetres of rain in the Space Ofjust one hour. That is enough to cause some localised Surface Water flooding. But worst still, across the south west where the winds converge, they lock this line of showers into the same kind of areas and along this line, particularly across parts of south west england, we could see something like 40 to 80 millimetres of rain in one or two hours. That is enough to cause some nasty flooding. That is about a Months Worth of rain in the Space Ofjust a few hours. Temperatures coming down little bit. Highs into the high teens and low 20s. Saturday, england are playing ukraine in the quarterfinals of the euros. After a warm day those temperatures coming down to the mid 20s at the time of kick off. On sunday, it doesnt get any better. Its another day of widespread heavy showers and thunderstorms. Some of the heaviest in more western areas and western scotland and Northern Ireland. The North West of england seeing some heavy downpours as well. Probably some gaps between the showers but Overall its a rather disappointing weekend. Next week, wet and windy for a time on monday and tuesday. The showers gradually easing later in the week. Thats your weather. This is Bbc News. Imjane im jane hill.
