And coming up on the Bbc News channel. British Number One Dan Evans is hoping to follow Andy Murray and others into the second round on day two at wimbledon. Good Afternoon And Welcome to the Bbc News at one. There are just four hours to go until one of the biggest games in World Football England germany. At stake, a place in the euro 2020 quarterfinals. Fans are already gathering at Wembley Therell be 40,000 of them there for the match. England havent beaten germany in a Knockout Game in a major tournament since the World Cup final in 1966, and manager Gareth Southgate is calling on his team to make history today. Natalie pirks is at wembley. Natalie. We are being truly spoiled. We saw some absolute classics Last Night with the World Champions going out and now we have this mouthwatering clash to look forward to. Gareth southgate says he wants to give us all a good warm feeling when we go into work tomorrow, but in the past it hasnt always gone englands way. And of course, the manager knows that all too well. Make your own history has been a mantra of Gareth Southgates for this young side. But he knows more than most how this fixture is inextricably linked with the past. They think its all over, it is now. England have played germany eight times in World Cup or euros. But remarkably, this sole World Cup win in 1966, is the last time england beat them in a major tournament knockout match. England are the World Champions. Since then, this fixture has mainly been a catalogue of english failure. First, in 1970. Then, on penalties, at italia 90. England are out of the World Cup. It is the first time in many, many Years England are going in as favourites against germany. Lets hope we win it in 90, lets hope we win it in 120, because i cant sit through a Penalty Shoot Out again. Later wembley will be half full, with more than 40,000 fans here, most of whom will be trying to make the germans feel most unwelcome. But germany have enjoyed some great moments here, not least lifting the trophy in euro 96. 14 years later, though, and it wasnt penalties but technology which dented englands chances. Lampard lampards Non Goal embarrassed fifa into bringing an Goal Line cameras. But the eventual 4 1 defeat sent fabio capellos wounded lions packing from south africa. In goal that day was david james. There was no occasion other than a Knockout Round in the World Cup. It wasnt that we Beat Germany in 66 and they beat us in 96. No, i think they willjust play the game and not get caught up in the occasion. That is for us to do. So, to now, then, and this current german side is hard to describe. So far in three games they have scored six, but conceded five. England, meanwhile, have created the fewest chances of any of the teams left in the tournament. The result is anyones guess. It cant get any bigger. Both are attacking minded teams. It is just in their dna. England Cannot Sit back too long, and germany never could sit back so sooner or later, they come out, they come out to play. There have, of course, been the odd Success Stories for england over the years. This is getting better and better and better. But the past is of no use now. England is a young side without emotional scars. They have to improve, but so do germany. Somethings got to give. Natalie pirks, Bbc News, wembley. So now we have a history out of the way, what about this current team . A lot of them were not born when germany lifted the European Trophy here in 96, and, 0k, germany lifted the European Trophy here in 96, and, ok, the records may not be great but as Gareth Southgate himself says records are there to be broken, as 0lly Foster now Reports. Those resections are making it a very different Viewing Experience in germany. Under normal circumstances fans who couldnt be there in person would be able to go to Vast Mass Public Viewing events, Fan Zones set up in towns and cities all over this country. Self isolation rules for School Pupils in england could be scrapped next term, amid concerns about the rising number of children who have to quarantine if one of their classmates tests positive for coronavirus. Police are investigating after englands Chief Medical Officer was approached in a london park. Footage shared online appears to show him being accosted by two men. The metropolitan police says it has spoken to all those involved in the incident, which took place on sunday. As the debate continues over whether facemasks should be worn after the lifting of restrictions in england, a new study suggests the type of mask worn can be crucial. Researchers in cambridge have found that if medical staff use a higher grade, betterfitting mask, there can be a 100 cut in transmission. Heres our science editor, david shukman. For the vast majority of Hospital Staff across the uk, a key part of the defence against coronavirus is surgical masks like these. You see them everywhere. But the new study has questioned whether they offer enough protection when caring for patients with covid. It says that if Healthcare Workers instead wear this type of mask, an ffp3, the rate of infection suddenly drops. Researchers discovered that during the second wave of covid last winter, when hospitals in cambridge decided to upgrade the standard of protection beyond official guidance. This surgical mask is the standard issue for most health workers. It is comfortable, but the gaps around the sides could let in infectious particles. Unlike with this type, the ffp3, which has a far tighter seal. And the study says that wearing these would be an awful lot safer. The different versions of ffp3 masks all do the same job of filtering out anything hazardous in the air, and a similar standard is now required on covid wards in america. Researchers here say we should now do the same. There was a 47 times higher risk of getting Coronavirus Infection if you worked on a Red Ward compared to a Green Ward whilst everyone was wearing surgical masks. However, the ffp3 masks provided up to 100 protection against Coronavirus Infection. All the way through the pandemic, The Government has said the safety of staff is a priority, and that its always reviewed the latest evidence. David shukman, Bbc News. Weekly registrations of deaths involving Covid 19 in wales have dropped to zero for the first time since the pandemic began. The Office For National Statistics says none of the 573 deaths registered in wales in the week Ending 18thjune mentioned Covid 19 on the death certificate. Less than 1 of authors studied at gcse English Literature level in england are from an ethnic Minority Background thats according to New Research. Campaigners are now calling more diversity in the curriculum. The government says schools have flexibility to choose the books they use as part of English Literature teaching. Our community Affairs Correspondent Adina Campbell Reports. . My Favourite Author is mallorie blackman. Ilike reading. Most specifically his recent. My Favourite Authors would be joyce carol 0ates. At this school in south east london, a discussion about books read inside and outside the classroom. More than a third of schoolchildren in england are from ethnic Minority Backgrounds, but only a small number of authors in the English Literature curriculum are from these groups, according to New Research by the Publisher Penguin and Race Equality Think Tank the runnymede trust. I feel like you internalise a lot of the things you read. So, if im reading a book or a novel and people like me are depicted in a certain way, i start to believe im the same as that, and the truth is im not, so we deserve representation. I feel as though, especially in the younger years, the texts that are chosen its, like, they werent chosen with the students in mind. The research analysed Gcse Exam boards data from more than half A Million students in england in 2019. It found fewer than 1 answered a question on a book by a black, asian, or ethnic minority author. While more than 80 said they couldnt recall ever studying a book by an author from an ethnic Minority Background. And just 7 had answered a question on a book by a woman at gcse. Some of britains most well known black writers say change has been too slow. We have to represent our diverse britain that is forward looking, that is multicultural. It important that kids see themselves in that reflection. Its notjust about black and asian kids, its also about white young children. And for those in charge in lessons, some believe greater diversity makes a big difference. Ive made it my mission, definitely, to try and diversify the curriculum, and choose text that speak directly to the voices that are in the classroom. The government says teachers have flexibility to choose the books they use as part of english teaching. And the curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils appreciate rich and varied literary heritage through a wide range of texts. But campaigners are calling for further action, and want to see better representation a mandatory part of the English Literature curriculum. We mostly hear about the History Curriculum being changed. History is slightly contested. I think we live in the real world. We have to understand that history comes with a lot of emotion. But English Literature and the reading of books, it comes with joy, comes with children discovering worlds they dont have access to. I feel like the curriculum.
