Well have more on the easing of restrictions, and the latest on changes to travel rules. Portugal is introducing a two Week Quarantine Period for british visitors, unless theyve been fully vaccinated. Nissan is to create 2000 newjobs in sunderland producing batteries for electric vehicles. I will be live here at wembley ahead of englands historic match in the euros against Germany Tomorrow with a place in the quarterfinals at stake. Cheering and applause. And on the first day of wimbledon 2021 Andy Murray wins a tough Opening Match on centre court. And coming up in the sport, on the Bbc News channel. Spain are through to the European Championship quarterfinals after a thrilling extra time win over croatia that provided eight goals. Good evening. There is no reason for the current covid restrictions in england to last beyond the 19th Ofjuly, according to the new Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, who said that people would have to learn to live with coronavirus in the longer term. He said his task was to help revive the economy, and cultural life. But mrjavid was speaking on the day that 22,000 new covid cases were reported across the uk, the highest since january. But the number of deaths has been limited to three in the past 2a hours. 0ur political Editor Laura Kuenssberg has the latest. The hard hat and hi viz are the same but its not really been business as usual. One of borisjohnson s most senior colleagues had to quit when he was caught out breaking the covid rules. And, at the start, the Prime Minister had wanted to keep him on. Well, i read the story on friday, and weve got a new Health Secretary in post on saturday, and i think thats about the right pace to proceed in a pandemic. We are very likely to be in a Position Onjuly19 to say that really is the terminus, and we can go back to life as it was before covid as far as possible. Cases continue to rise, though, and switching Health Secretaries in a pandemic is farfrom ideal, even if it is a return to government for a familiarface. My first visit to a hospital on thejob. Congratulations. Sajid javid has already been Home Secretary and the chancellor. Now, as Health Secretary, hes also giving heavy hints that ministers are on course to lift the remaining restrictions in england in three weeks. Congratulations and nice to meet you. We see no reason to go beyond the 19th Ofjuly because. In truth, no date we choose comes with zero risk for covid. For me, the 19th Ofjuly is not only the end of the line, but the start of an exciting newjourney. But a new face doesnt mean everything about mr Hancocks Departure is ancient history. How was his aid, gina coladangelo, appointed to the board at the Department Of Health . When did their relationship start . And did he sometimes do Government Work on a private E Mail Account . The opposition is pushing to know. I have right here the minutes of a departmental meeting in which senior civil servants report Government Contracts being approved from a ministers private E Mail address. Can the minister now say from this Despatch Box categorically and on the record that No Minister or Prime Minister has used or does use private E Mail for Government Business . Today, the government has been emphasising its optimism about being able to get rid of the remaining covid rules in england on its planned date onjuly the 19th. But it is still grappling with the fallout of the behaviour of the man who argued for those rules here in the commons. Matt hancock might be gone from government but his exit was messy and a reminder, too, for Downing Street they cant and dont control all events. And the new Health Secretary wont either. With what is hoped to be the Tail End of the pandemic, and a growing list of other tasks. This is what its all about, especially after our talk. A first photocall may well be the easiest day in the office he ever has. Laura kuenssberg, Bbc News, westminster. As weve heard, the number of new infections across the uk is continuing to rise sharply, but admissions to hospital are rising at a much slower rate. 0ur medical Editor Fergus Walsh looks at the impact of the Mass Vaccine Programme on the incidence of serious cases of covid. Every day with every vaccination, the link between covid cases and severe illness is getting weaker. The more people who are protected, the less damage the virus can do. During september and october last year, coronavirus cases rose sharply to more than 20,000 cases per day. Over the same period before vaccines, the number of patients being admitted to hospital every day followed a similar upward trend, rising to nearly 1500 patients a day. But if we look at the period from may this year, although cases have risen sharply to around 15,000 per day, Hospital Admissions have not followed that same upward trend, rising to just over 200 patients today. And the chances of dying from Covid Have Fallen dramatically. At the peak injanuary, it was estimated one in every 60 infections caused a death. Now it is fewer than one in every 1000. And it is the huge success of covid vaccines which has prompted some scientists to back the lifting of restrictions in three weeks. Thejuly date is good because schools will be closing for the summer, we will be going into the summer holidays, and Transmission Potential will be somewhat less than it would be, say, in the autumn or winter. And, also, we are pretty close to getting the vast majority of our population, adult population, immunised. A new study shows that mixing between Astrazeneca And Pfizer vaccines gives strong protection against coronavirus. Initial results show that giving a different brand as the second dose can actually boost immunity levels. When it comes to giving the first two doses, its probably better to stick to a standard schedule because they are effective and they work. When it comes to giving later doses, like a third dose, a Booster Dose of vaccine, then these Mix And Match schedules, they generate a pretty good immune response, so that is something we might want exploring. Scotland has recorded more than 3000 daily coronavirus cases, the highest number over 2a hours since the start of the pandemic. Vaccines dont give complete protection but the more people who are immunised, the more covid Hospital Admissions will be kept in check. Fergus walsh, Bbc News. Lets look at the changes in travel rules. Travellers from the uk are to face stricter rules when arriving in portugal, spain, Malta And Hong kong, as Health Experts express growing concern about the spread of the Delta Variant of the virus. For mainland portugal, people will have to show proof of two vaccinations, or have to quarantine for 14 days, as well as taking a covid test. These changes dont affect people travelling to the island of madeira. In spain, its government says all visitors from the uk must be double vaccinated or test negative for coronavirus before arriving. The change is expected to come into force later this week. And, from wednesday, malta will only admit people from the uk, whove had two vaccinations. They can bring their children, but only if theyre under 12. The Uk Government is about to relax rules on people returning from malta, madeira and spains balearic, putting these places on its green list from wednesday. 0ur Transport Correspondent Caroline Davies has the latest. Another cloud in the sky for International Travel. 0vernight, portugal announced that Uk Arrivals must either be fully vaccinated or quarantine for 14 days. Its meant last minute changes for victoria and simon, due to go there on honeymoon this morning. We woke up to my parents banging on the front door to get us out of bed to tell us we couldnt go anywhere. Had a few hours cancelling everything and calling up ryanair. And now going to ibiza. We literally found out this morning that we couldnt fly today. Having left everything to book to the very last minute, literally the night before, so that we were not surprised by anything, to find out this morning was really irritating. Portugal was moved to the Amber List in earlyjune, meaning that when arrivals come back to the uk, they already need to quarantine here for ten days at home. The number of Uk Travellers is already low and affecting business. The british tourists are everything for our business. At the end of the day, we have everybody coming from europe but the brits are the biggest spenders and we are now entering the season of holidays. Portugal isnt the only country to tighten its travel policies. Malta will be added to the green list on wednesday but it has now said it will require all travellers aged 12 and over to be fully vaccinated. Spain hasnt gone as far but now requires all arrivals to be double jabbed or have a negative covid test. Ben had booked to go to malta with his Family But Wont have had his second jab in time. Fortunately, my parents are both fullyjabbed so they can go out. But for me and my sisters, because we are in our 30s, weve only had a single dose, we realise it is unlikely we would be able to fly. It is what it is and i appreciate we need to be safe but i do think that our government should have liaised better with the maltese government. There are worries about the knock on impact as rules change. This industry needs urgent help. We are a long way from having a Uk Summer as we know it. Weve already lost may. Weve already lost june. We are going to lose a big Chunk Ofjuly and it doesnt look like the summer that we know and love where we are able to travel wherever we want to. It looks like that is many weeks off. The Uk Government has previously said both tailored and wider economic support is available to the sector, including the furlough scheme. As countries chop and change their border policies, International Travel is left on shaky ground. Caroline davies, Bbc News. As we mentioned earlier, the latest official figures show that, in the past 2a hours, three deaths were reported and 22,868 new infections were recorded. Technical problems over the weekend mean that approximately 2,000 infections that should have been reported yesterday are reflected in todays total. Theres been an average of 16,612 new cases per day in the uk last week. Over 139,000 people received a first dose of the vaccine in the latest 24 hour period. This means nearly 44. 5 million people have now had their first, 84. 4 of uk adults. Just over 123,000 people have had their second dose of the vaccine in the latest 2a hour period. More than 32. 5 million people have now had both doses, thats 61. 9 of uk adults. 0ur Health Editor Hugh Pym is here. Can we go back and just think about that sharp rise in new cases of infections, and then contrast that with the vary confident tone that we had from the new Health Secretary today. How do you square those two . There is increasing evidence that while cases are rising rapidly Hospital Admissions are rising considerably slowly, and new Analysis Today from public Health England suggested that 27,000 lives had been saved all because of the vaccines, and all that informs the bullish tone we heard from ministers, Sajid Javid in the common saying it was absolutely the Governments Intention to end or restrictions in england onjuly 19. Restrictions in england onjuly19. He went on to say he was very confident about that. A rather more p confident about that. A rather more up tone than his predecessor Matt Hancock who would say it is data not dates and everyone had to wait until the week before to get the final decision. The Government Line seems to be there want to go ahead onjuly the 19th and the date is looking very positive. We have had this announcement of 22,000 cases. Even taking off the extra ones that should have been reported yesterday there has been a doubling in a week. Suppose there is another doubling over the next week or so and more, Hospital Admissions will go up a bit so things might change and it might not be as straightforward as ministers suggest. Many parents are concerned about pupils being out of School And Self isolating because of the spread of the virus. 0ne Estimate only 5000 pupils are off school because of that. Sajid javid said he understood the problems with the policy over whole classes having to isolate because they are in bubbles and he would look again at that and possibly come up with a more refined policy involving testing in schools. More refined policy involving testing in schools. Thanks very much. Testing in schools. Thanks very much lets testing in schools. Thanks very much. Lets Move Testing in schools. Thanks very much. India is already struggling with the effects of the devastating second wave of covid, but the country is now having to deal with another health crisis, more than thousands of deaths caused by a rare fungal infection called mucormycosis. The disease has been declared an epidemic in india. Doctors say that covid and the treatment being given for it has led to this surge. From a public hospital in pune, one of the worst affected districts, our India Correspondent Yogita Limaye reports. Covid has left behind in india a new epidemic mucormycosis. A fungus that attacks parts of the brain, face and lungs. Not contagious, but aggressive. It is known to kill half of those it infects. Doctors say covid and the steroids used to save people from it have left them vulnerable to the fungus. Surgeons have to remove infected parts. Shivaji veer lost one of his eyes. Translation iml grateful to be alive. But i had to take a big loan to buy medicines. I used to drive school buses, but i cant do that now. At this public hospital, there were not more than three cases a year. Now, there are five every day. Dr Aniket Lathi says he was in disbelief initially when the surge hit. Covid is leaving such a big trail behind of mucormycosis. And they do not fill up the beds only for a day or two. They are here to stay with us for at least one month, one and a half months. The injection needed to treat a rare disease, expensive and hard to find. With covid and mucormycosis, indias stretched Health Care facilities have had no respite. Just a small percentage of the population has been vaccinated so far, and government experts are warning a third surge could be here in less than a couple of months. 0utside these walls, people are yet to come to terms with the trauma that hit them during the second wave. Siddharth kharadi was 19. He got covid and then mucormycosis. His family says it wasnt diagnosed early enough to save him. He was such a caring son, i really miss him, his mother, suvarna, tells me. Siddharth underwent multiple operations. The family sold their jewellery to pay hospital bills. His father, sandeep kharadi, says, sometimes i still dont understand where this illness came from. It destroyed our home and took our son from us. Its left us with a lifetime of sorrow. Yogita limaye, Bbc News, pune. Parts of the western United States and canada are experiencing a record heat wave. Portland in oregon set a record of 44. 5 degrees over the weekend. The village of lytton in british Columbia Recorded Temperatures of more than 46 celsius, the highest in ca nadas history. 0n the eve of their battle with germany in the knockout stages of euro 2020, the England Football Manager Gareth Southgate says he hopes his team can make history. Its 25 years since southgate missed a crucial penalty against germany at euro 96, ending the teams hopes of reaching the final. Hes now keen to write a new chapter in the Football Rivalry between england and germany. 0ur Sports Editor Dan Roan is at wembley. For decades now england have been trying and failing to beat germany in the knockout stages of major tournaments. There is a real sense among theirfans tournaments. There is a real sense among their fans that these opponents have become something of a bogey team, that enjoy a psychological edge over the hosts here tomorrow. There is no doubt that if Gareth Southgates side to secure what would be a defining victory here, they are going to have to defy the weight of history. Footballs Coming Home its Coming Home. The last time england met germany at wembley in a major tournament, theirfans had dared to believe. But instead, an all too familiarfinish. Commentator oh, no the Penalty Shoot out defeat in the semifinals of euro 96 another painful chapter in the teams history. A quarter of a century after missing, Gareth Southgate is now managing as the two rivals meet once again. But tonight, he insisted his Team Neednt be weighed down by the past. Theres no reason for these boys to feel that way. Most werent born when a lot of those games happened. Its an irrelevance for them, so i think were all looking forward to the game tomorrow. We know its a fantastic game to be involved in and a real opportunity for us to progress to a quarterfinal. Southgates team trained this morning as winners of their group but know these euros have now reached a decisive phase, in which extra time and penalties are possible. Chris waddle was another to experience the anguish of failure from the spot for england, in his case, the semifinal of the 1990 World Cup against west germany, and has urged the current team to ensure a shoot out isnt needed. It will prey a little bit on some of them and were good enough to not go to that situation because if somebody misses it, and hopefully they dont, you know, this is going to drag them on for years and years. Commentator squared it to goretzka. Werner s shot blocked. Goretzka. germany needed a late goal against hungary to qualify from their group and some sense vulnerability. Jurgen klinsmann won everything playing for his country and the legendary former striker told me a result is hard to predict. It has always a Special Meaning to germans as well. So everyone is looking forward to it and no german says that were going to win this game easily. I think its a completely new generation that represents now this game, and for me, personally, its a 50 50 situation. It can go either way. The question isjust, i are they able to zoom in and understand that specific moment, right now, its Do Or Die . England have beaten these opponents, of course, the 1966 World Cup final win securing the teams only major trophy. Prevail tomorrow, however, and the hosts may believe theyre on course for another. Whatever happens here at wembley tomorrow, it will have to do very well indeed to match the drama and the excitement of the two matches that took place in the euros today, as Andy Swiss reports. Anyone for a classic . Well, how about two . Spain and croatia were first to oblige. For starters, just watch this, one of the craziest own goals youll ever see. Goodness me, its a goal a backpass from near the Halfway Line and the stuff of Spanish Keeper unai simons nightmares. Croatia could hardly believe their luck, but spain bounced back. Goals from Pablo Sarabia before the Break And Cesar azpilicueta after it put them in control. And when Ferran Torres made it 3 1, the game seemed as good as over. How wrong we were. With just five minutes left, croatia scrambled it over the Line Goal given. They couldnt, could they . Thats incredible well, deep into injury time, guess what. Would you believe it . Mario pasalic stoking croatian celebration. It was 3 3 and it was thrilling. Come extra time, though, spain finally eased clear, scoring twice to secure a 5 3 win. Delight for them, but what astonishing drama. That was just the start. In bucharest, the world champions, france, fell behind to switzerland. Seferovic with the goal, and after the break, the swiss won a penalty, but Hugo Lloris saved it, and the much flipped on its head. In a flash, france were in front. Two girls in two minutes for karim benzema, before Paul Pogba made a 31 benzema, before Paul Pogba made a 3 1 in sumptuous style. Surely that was that . No, it wasnt. Seferovic making a 3 2, before, almost unthinkably, switzerland levelled it at 33. Unthinkably, switzerland levelled it at 3 3. More extra time, more extraordinary drama. Andy swiss, Bbc News. Ican i can tell you they are now into the second period of extra time, no extra goals. Still 3 3. Second period of extra time, no extra goals. Still3 3. So second period of extra time, no extra goals. Still 3 3. So the dreaded Penalty Shoot out is looming. France, world champions, have had chances to win it. But it remains 3 3. Ten stuff. Lets see whether or not Tomorrow Night goes to penalties as well. England will be desperately hoping it doesnt, given the previous record in shoot out. I should say there is extra motivation for england and Germany Tomorrow, because on paper they are in the easier side of the draw, and whoever wins will have what appears to be an easier route through to the final. But england will hope that Home Advantage is decisive. More than 40,000 fans will be here, the vast majority of them cheering for the hosts in what is undoubtedly the biggest game on Home Soilfor undoubtedly the biggest game on Home Soil for quarter of undoubtedly the biggest game on Home Soilfor quarter of a undoubtedly the biggest game on Home Soil for quarter of a century.
