We are extremely grateful for the support that we have received from the national, the state, and the local partners, as well as throughout the state. And and elsewhere. And in addition, we are grateful for the support that we have embedded from our israeli and mexican teams that have joined our operation. We have a full set of social Services Available to the families at the hotel where most of them are staying. And so, they are operating in shifts. They are available around the clock, with grief counseling, rabbis, otherreligious leaders, all, onsite to assist our families during this difficult, difficult process. Many groups have volunteered, as well, to help. And we are coordinating their services. Chief among them, Jewish Community services which also operates the 211 help line here with licensed clinicians. And they specialize in trauma and grief counseling. Also, our Community Action and humanservices agencies and juvenileservices department. Those are county departments with our own licensed psychologists and social workers on the scene, assisting. Florida blue has, also, offered to assist and we have set up a grief hotline. That number is 8338481762. Again, 8338481762. Among many, many others who are stepping up and helping us. I just wanted to say how very, very moved i am, and all of us are, at the incredible outpouring of support that we have received right here in surfside. From all across the globe. In the midst of this incredible tragedy. We know people are feeling this. They are feeling connected to us. We feel your support. We feel your love and compassion. This has truly shown us how interconnected we are, as a world, as a global community. So, on behalf of miamidade county, i just want to say thank you. Thank you, so much, to the entire world for stepping up and holding us in the palm of your hands. Thank you, so, very much, for your love and for your prayers. And financially, we have received incredible support. There are multiple sites, now, available. And over 750,000 has been received through just one of the funds, supportsurfside. Org that was set up by miami foundation, clarke gables, foundation, and key biscayne. So, god bless our families and our First Responders. We hold you in our hearts. Your labors have been just monumental and we know you do it with passion and commitment. And you live to find people alive in the rubble. [ speaking Foreign Language ] you have been listening to the latest update from officials in South Florida. Where the searchandrescue efforts continue. Following thursdays building collapse. The death toll, now, stands at five, with 131 residents, still, unaccounted for. Nbcs Vaughn Hillyard joins us now, from florida. Vaughn, what can you tell us about the family you have spoken to on the ground . Hey there. Yeah. We just got this from this Press Conference here. I think that its important to note that we now have 156 unaccountedfor individuals. The hard part here is that families stream out of this hotel, which has been set up as the location for those Family Members to not only hold and have rooms but also get their briefings ahead of that public Press Conference, and the faces and Body Language of those individuals was was particularly somber, because i think what that Press Conference you just heard from was indication that hope is dwindling ever more. The new number of unaccounted is 156. It was 159 earlier today. They also announced that there was one additional body recovered as well as other remains. That puts the total of dead up to five. Four of those individuals have now been identified but theyre not releasing those names publicly. That fifth body has not been identified at this time. Again, i cant underscore the fact that family and friends and neighbors here are waiting for news of their loved ones. This news here this evening is very difficult here, because they have Little Information as to the extent of the remains. In that Press Conference, officials did say that they have received dna from all Family Members related to those individuals who are currently unaccounted for, and that theyre able to do immediate analysis on the scene of all of the remains that they do recover and that theyre able to then go and match with the Dna Data Base they have built up one body has been recovered by these rescue teams here and remain as well. The number of unaccounted remains at 156. Were just a mile away from the site of where that rubble is. You can see the Flashing Lights at the end. As folk here left this scene, again, this has been a very tough two and a half days, of course, but there is a great number of folks that were really holding out hope that their Family Members may be surviving underneath that rubble, but we are now, you know, more than almost three days into this year, and this news, despite this rescue team continuing their efforts here, there has not been a single survivor that has been located and pulled from the rubble since those initial moments after that collapse very early thursday morning. Vaughn, in addition to the u. S. Citizens, those who sort of lived in this condo year round, there are also of course a number of people visiting from other countries. Given the International Nature of some of the people who were there, how does that further complicate the efforts to reach next of kin, to communicate what is happening on site . Reporter exactly. Its difficult. I was on the phone with a relative of a colombian family that is missing the. Fathers brother lives in town. They were here visiting while she was doing tennis lessons. And i know the Family Members back in colombia were struggling to get information, and were hoping to have some sort of a sign of hope here, when i was talking to them on the phone on thursday, here. But there were six individuals unaccounted for from paraguay. The families says its not just u. S. Search and rescue teams here buck mexican and israeli teams supported here. In addition to the first lady of paraguay. Her first trip to the u. S. All of us watch this, and the questions that come to mind, how could this happen . Why would this happen . What more do we know about warning signs, reports that structural concerns were dating back to 2018 . The biggest news is a report that came out overnight from the city of surfside. A contractor reporting a detailed report back in 2018 at the request of that condo complex. What they found in 2018 you can count the number of years ago that was that there were major structural deficiencies, including cracks in the cement, crack in the wall, rusting of steel. We heard from one woman. She was breaking down crying at the reunification center, and i went up to her, and she said the name of her younger sister, cassie. Within seconds of her telling me the name of her sister there was anger and frustration. Because she said she knew the building was going down because he sister cassie could complain there was a lack of maintenance down, the garage would flood, were standing on a barrier reef here, literally 100 yards from the shoreline. We dont know whether the structural deficiencies was the reason the building came down, but were putting together a lot of pieces, including the fact that there was a study done of that particular complex showing the ground sinking by a couple of millimeters every year over the course of years, which is a cause for great concern. There was an inspector just last week on site. We know they were doing Roof Construction at the time of the collapse. Again, though, theres outstanding questions and a level of despair, a level of losing hope, along with a level of frustration over what is becoming clear that there were clear issues here with this building and to what extent were they ever addressed . It is unimaginable and heartbreaking. Vaughn hilliard, thank you so much. Well be right back. Oh are youg Liberty Mutuals Coverage Customizer tool . Sorry . Well, since you asked. It is hard to tank it, but on all of us to protect it. While well not be talking a ton of trump here, you do need to know hes back on the public stage in ohio. Theres no doubt hes going to spew the big lie and claim he won in 2020. We know how he plays his game. But in the greatest democracy on earth, the pendulum swings back, which brings us to a host of setbacks facing trump world tonight. Not only is the Manhattan District Attorney eyeing charges against trump family businesses, its reported those charges could drop as soon as next week. Then theres trumps ride or die, Rudy Giuliani. He can no longer practice law in the very city he used to run as mayor. New york state revoked his law license, citing giulianis false and misleading claims about the 2020 election. As republicanled states use the big lie to enact some of the strictest Voting Requirements ever seen, the doj is fighting back, now filing suit against georgia. Heres the Attorney General. Today the department of justice is suing the state of georgia. Our complaint alleges that recent changes to georgias Election Laws were enacted with the purpose of denying or abridging the right of Black Georgians to vote on account of their race or color in violation of the s. E. C. Two of the Voting Rights act. Then theres the january 6th insurrection, which most republicans hope well all just forget about, going so far as to block the creation of a commission to create it. People like officer fanone wont let us forget. He remains on leave from being beaten. He met with Kevin Mccarthy friday and didnt seem to walk away all that impressed. How are you doing . Im tired. Tired of discussions, tired of not being heard . Im just mentally and physically exhausted. Im ready to go home and drink a beer. Do you feel like he heard you at all . I dont know. Speaker pelosi announced a select committee to probe the january 6th assault. Heres House Democratic chair on what we can expect. My expectation that we will vote on the select committee to authorize it in the house next week, and perhaps shortly there after well begin to know what the composition will look like in terms of members appointed by Speaker Pelosi and well see What Horror Show Kevin Mccarthy gives us. Still, with rumors of trumps magical august reinstatement, which is not going to happen, worrying dhs officials, this fight is far from over. Will forces of democracy hold the line . For more, lets Welcome National security analyst and former Assistant Director for counterintelligence at the fbi, and gabe, new York Magazine national correspondent. When we talk about the trump rally, what is the point of it . How is it different from other trump appearances and, how much of it has to do with what he learned on friday, that the d. A. s office informed trumps lawyers its considering charges against his business. He was already going to do this rally, but obviously the message now is entirely painted by that. Everything he does these days should be read within the lens of, one, trying a political comeback, because hes talked openly about that. But two, perpetuating the lie that the election was stolen. Seems over the last few weeks from people in his world theyre trying to deflect attention from everyone else, including the criminal inquiries, and on to this idea that the election was stolen from him, which of course we well know by now is completely false. Its political, and hes trying to force his way back into the political mainstream, which he is really not in washington right now in terms of things actually getting done. In terms of how the conversation in the country goes that might be different because things are split politically. The facts, however, remain clear that this election was not stolen. Gabe, speaking of those close to him, Rudy Giuliani learned this week his license to practice law in the state of new york has been suspended. A big deal for any attorney, especially for someone who is former mayor of new york city. Your sense of how much trouble Rudy Giuliani is in . It remains to be seen. We dont know the full degree of his legal exposure, but every single week there seems to be new revelations about various inquiries. Giuliani is subject to a lot of these investigations. This latest development is absolutely terrible news for him in term of the possible criminal exposure he may have right now. Remains to be seen, but hes clearly A Person Of Interest in a lot thats going on right now. Frank, propublica released a report that trumps aides knew things could get out of how might that play into the investigation nancy pelosi is talking about on capitol hill . Yeah, we just get new revelations seemingly every week or multiple times a week about how close we came, how perilously we were to an authoritarian move by essentially a dictatorlike figure, and being ready to sign a drafted Insurrection Act is something thats new to us and needs to be discovered. This is why we have to have a serious rigorous commission that looks at this. So, the select committee is something we need to watch closely in terms of who is going to compose it. Im very concerned that anything less than a serious structure, serious people asking serious hard questions is going to further erode the credibility that we already see throughout the country in term of our institutions and congress. A clown show, a circus environment, not being taken seriously, no subpoena power its almost better to not have to committee at all. Im going to be watching closely about the degree to which this thing will be a serious inquiry. And were all going to be relying on your expertise when that happens. I also wanted to ask you, politico reported dhs is concern about the Conspiracy Theory that trump will be reinstate in the august. The theory is being peddled widely by trump world, people like mike flynn, Qanon Adherents. How concerned are they about this threat . I dont think they believe that large masses of people believe this is going to happen. A statistically significant percentage of republicans believe hes somehow going to come back sometime in the near future. The my pillow guy says its going to be this summer or maybe there after, and trump wants to keep this lie alive. He needs this to happen. But Security Professionals cant ignore this because it only takes a handful of people bent on violence, trying to make their outcome happen to really do damage. Sadly, Security Professionals throughout the country are likely to get alerts from dhs, fbi, warning them there may be movement, and theyve got to keep an eye on this as silly as it sounds. Frank, gabe, thank you both. Still to come, how a conspiracy becomes a movement. Mike rothchild has a new book about the rise of qanon and tells us why being dismissive of Conspiracy Theories is like putting miracle grow on them. Clocks working around the clock, picking through rubble and hoping to find signs of life. As of this hour, 156 people still missing. When theres an update youre going to see it here. Stay with us. Camera man prevented. You can get vaccinated. Baby, call the doctor. Camera man hey you can also get it from your pharmacist 50 years or older . Get vaccinated for shingles now. 50 years or older . I dont just play someone brainy on tv im an actual neuroscientist. And i love the Science Behind neuriva plus. Unlike ordinary memory supplements, neuriva plus fuels six key indicators of Brain Performance. More Brain Performance . Yes, please neuriva. Think bigger. Sometimes you wanna go where Everybody Knows your name and theyre always glad you came welcome back, america. It sure is good to see you. Democrats across the country are banding together in a fight for democracy. The next two months could be crucial in protecting the right to vote. This comes as Texas Governor is setting the stage for a Special Session in july aimed at pushing the states republicanled effort to restrict ballot access. Meantime, the Justice Department is leading a a federal effort to reprev voting right, suing georgia over its election law. And next week, grassroots sweeping Voting Protections in congress. Joining me now so discuss, ezra levin, also joining us, christina ramirez, and the Chief Executive Officer of the new Georgia Voting project. Im going to start with you, because we have the doj challenging georgias Election Laws. How does this change the contours of your organizing . It doesnt. This was contemplated as a part of our overall plan to win, right, so its always been about a litigation strategy, communications, making sure that were talking directly to americans about whats at stake and how to get involved. It has been Technology And Culture that we leverage, Recruiting Artists and entertainers and influencers. This is an allhands on deck effort, so we welcome the Attorney General and the doj to the fight, but yes, it was contemplated as a part of a, lets Throw Everything at the wall and see what sticks, and our effort to defend our democracy. I dont want to throw any cold water on that enthusiasm, but my sense and i want to hear from you is that this is an Uphill Battle. For sure. I mean, were talking about, you know this week weve celebrated or acknowledged or commemorated the eighth anniversary of Shelby Versus holder. Supreme court case that kicked the teeth out of the Voting Rights act, particularly sections four and sections five. Merrick garland acknowledged in his Press Conference on friday, had that provision still been the law of the land, senate bill 202 would have never passed, because what it says is jurisdictions with a history of discrimination, when they want to make changes to their voting laws, have to prove to the department of justice that they dont discriminate. Theres nothing but discriminatory language in georgias voting bill, so it never would have passed. I say all of that to say, absolutely is an Uphill Battle and the right to vote is preservative of all other rights we enjoy, so it is absolutely worth it. This isnt just happening in georgia. The a. G. Signalled theyre going to review laws passed in other states. That comes as texas lawmakers are going to return for a Special Session next month as republicans push to limit bat access there. The next step for Texas Democrats in their fight . We know we have our Special Session coming up. We are incredibly proud our democratic delegation walked out of the last legislative session. Thats why theyre forcing this Special Session. Were going to continue to see activists, organizers and legislators continue to fight Tooth And Nail to make sure this legislation is not passed. If it is, were going to double down on efforts in the biggest state of the country. Because ultimately what republicans are afraid of is a changing demographic, a changing country, and at the same time were going to unite with folks in georgia and every state across this country and push for federal legislation and action to enshrine and protect the right of every single american to vote. We are both women of color in the south, and it is not lost on us it took federal action to protect or right to vote historically, and that we will need federal action again to protect our right to vote today. I was also struck to your point about demographic change, about that fact that doj made that very plain and clear in their remarks. White House Press Secretary jen psaki discussed the challenges of passing federal Voting Rights legislation yesterday. I want to you take a listen. Does the white house see the Justice Department as its only way of going on offense against the sweeping efforts across the country . No, we dont. We are going to continue to fight for, battle for, work toward legislation. I know it does not seem easy at this time. We do hard things. Thats what we do here. But were also going to continue to engage, and this is as it relates to an earlier question, with local activists, local legislators. You have seen the Vice President do a bit of this, engage and work them. Were going fight this fight on many fronts. Ezra, when we talk about fighting the fight on many fronts, your Group Indivisible is all about grassroots organizing, what tools are voters deploying to ramp up pressure for the federal legislation to protect Voting Rights that saki was talking about there . The best tool of them all, and that is constituent power. We have this basic understanding of how our democracy works, which is every single morning, every senator wakes up thinking, how am i going to get reelected . And the answer to that question is ive got to make my constituents think im one of the good ones. By focusing locally, focusing on your own two senators and say, hey, i expect to you represent me. Dont represent fox news, breitbart, dont water down proposals. Dont shy away from hard fights. Pass this bill. By passing that message on to these senators during the july 4th recess, which is coming up, by passing that on loudly and clearly we can force them to take up the bill and pass it. Its up to them to pass it. Its up to us to make them pass it. It is clear whats happening in georgia is about black voters and other voters of color. They are the ones being specifically targeted. What does it tell you that republicans instead of putting together a strategy to reach out and offer voters something to get them to show up to the polls have instead restricted their right to vote . It tells me that in the marketplace of ideas, fewer and fewer people are buying what the republicans are selling, and they are demonstrating not only that they are afraid in this moment, but that they are absolutely clear that the only way for them to continue to hold on to power is to cheat, is to, as you said earlier, take a sledgehammer to our elections infrastructure, to our democracy. Georgia is rapidly careening towards this multiracial, multiethnic, multilingual Progressive Majority thats been written about. Were talking about 2024, 2025, thats around the corner. So if anyone had a coworker that was about to get fired or a partner that knew they were about to get dumped and you saw the bad behavior and knew that the writing was on the wall, thats what were seeing in this. All of the desperation, that is what were seeing in this moment. All right, who among us has not had that experience . Thank you all as always. President trumps return to the Campaign Stage is likely to embolden Conspiracy Theorists, many of whom are pushing the bogus idea the former president can somehow be an instated in august, A Theory Trump himself as promoted. Top official at the debt of Homeland Security are concerned. The narrative, they say, could trigger another violent response by extremists. White House Press Secretary jen psaki addresses the issue friday. Is this administration prepared for weve heard rumbles from the former president and his supporters about august and the possibility of him being restated. What would the administrations reaction to be . Reporter the president is prepared to govern and continue to lead the United States of america, and of course should there be an elevation, an escalation, that is something we would certainly monitor and track as well. Joining me now, mike rothchild. Hes the author of the storm is upon us. I have more questions than i have time for, so lets start with the newest piece of this, which is this newest persistent rumor about trumps reinstatement, no base nice fact, and yet this is the reason were talking about it you have officials within the department of the Homeland Security who are saying that theyre concerned. Your sense of how widespread this theory is among Qanon Adherents and others. First of all, thank you for having me. And this rumor that trump is going to be magically restored to office through some sort of power that nobody quite understands, sit extremely prevalent among qanon Rank And File followers. This is a rumor thats failed and burned. Theyre not saying x is going to happen on y day and z is how its going to look. What it is is the audits will produce so much fraud in arizona that arizona will be invalidated and that will invalidate pennsylvania, every state where biden won, and trump will saunter back into the oval office as if nothing happened. The belief that the election was stole been the restoration is around the corner, this is prevalent not just in the people who selfidentify as Qanon Believers but essentially in the entire gop. You know, you have senators who will not say who won the election. That is qanon, even if you dont want to call it qanon. Trump put himself on the map by embracing the Obama Birther conspiracy. Hillary clinton, favorite target of groups like qanon. But as you wrote recently, quote, biden Conspiracy Theorists are [ no audio ] into larger plots. The dough just isnt rising. Talk about this. Why is biden such a hard target for Conspiracy Theorists . Sure. Joe biden has been in politics forever, basically. Anything that people want to know about him is out there already. You have had some things that caught on a little bit. Some things about ukraine led to president trumps impeachment. The hunter biden thing has been hammered over and over and over again by these people, but joe biden is not seen as this all powerful puppet master. Hes seen much more as the puppet. Hes seen as this decrepe it barely functional husk whos kept in the basement, trotted out for five minute speeches and put away. He has no power in this conspiracy movement. And a person who doesnt have power is not somebody to be peered. These people feared obama. They feared the clinton theyre not afraid of joe biden. They think of him as just this front for the actual evil thats going on in the deep state, people like kamala harris, people like the clintons still, obama still, george soros. Biden is just the puppet. These Conspiracy Theories. This is the thing i can never get over. They keep moeing the goalposts. If a predicted event doesnt come true, they change the date. Why doesnt the dispositive dampen the belief . I write about this quite a lot in the book. The disconfirmation it takes to be a believe, not just in qanon, but any Conspiracy Theory, you have to get really excited for something, and you also somehow have to be excited that its not happening. You tell yourself that there is some unforeseen bump in the road. The bad guys fought back. You have to tweak. But you never stop believing. You just kick that can a little farther down the road. At some point you get so used to kicking the can, you start to like it. You revel in defeat. It makes you believe more. It fuels your grievance complex. Thats exactly whats going on here. Mike rothchild. The book is called the storm is upon us. Thank you for joining us. Next, im going to talk with an olympic runner with dreams. These are some of the ugliest most unamerican laws ive seen, and i have been here a while. Many of them target transgender children, even preventing them from joining sports teams with their classmates. Lets be clear this is nothing more than bullying, disguised as legislation. This all comes as Transgender Athletes are Making History by competing in the olympics for the first time. With me now, A Transtrack Star Who Ran in the this week. Nikki, tell me, what would going to the olympics have meant for you . Oh, it would have been everything. It would have been a childhood dream come true. But just being able to show up as myself and race as a nonbinary athlete this past weekend has been everything. Tell me about that. How are you feeling about your races this week . You know, i got sick right before the 1500 final. I think just the is something m arent used to. That was really unfortunate. And i had two rest days before the 8 to try to kick it, and it just wasnt in the cards this year, but i was really happy with the way i competed and put myself in two events. Nikki, you ran College Track in arkansas, but you now say that you wouldnt feel safe visiting arkansas. How will the bills in that state and dozens of other states limit not just the careers of trans athletes, but their ability to live their daytoday lives . Yeah. Its crazy. You know, i spent three years in arkansas and i think, you know, i just dont feel safe there anymore. Just because of these bills and you know, the way that theyre passing through. I think its really going to limit a lot of people, especially trans people, and you know, yeah, its just heartbreaking. And you know, thats why im so determined to keep showing up as myself and, you know, trying to make space for trans people in the sport. Well, to that point, you wrote in your coming out letter, quote, The Playing Fields can be a very gendered place. How does that show up for you . How does that show up for other athletes . And how can sports be more inclusive and mindful of nonbinary athletes . Its a great question. For me, it all comes back to language. I think, you know, i changed my pronouns and now i am referred to as they them. And it feels amazing. I hope sports with feel chair language too. I heard Megan Rapinoe saying, athletes competing in womens sports. And thats for me, thats it. Sometimes when im in the call room and i hear the womens 1500, it kind of shakes me for a minute, in a moment where im trying to focus on the biggest race of my life. So i think that we can all change our language and make sport, you know, accepting for everyone. Nikki, you founded the pride 5k during the pandemic. Besides raising money for the trevor project, what do you see as the goal of this race . Yeah, its funny, i talk about it as a race, but i think its more of a community than anything. And to create a space for people around the world to run together and last year, we had four people actually use the race to come out and to be their true, authentic self. And i think right there what the pride 5k is all about. Its creating a space safe for people to be their unapologetic self. And ill keep leaning into that by advocacy work, just as much as im going to keep fighting to make that olympic team. You know, nikki, what is particularly heartbreaking about the legislation that were seeing across the country is how many pieces of legislation are just aimed at kids who want to play sports for a kid that is watching, who might feel like theyre under attack by their state government. What is your message to them . Yeah. I mean, its heartbreaking and i think these are kids that just want to play and be themselves. And i would say to that kid, like, youre special and youre magical, and theres nothing wrong with you. And you know, you want to play sports like everyone else and you deserve to. So, theres so many people that have your back and love you and are going to fight for you. And i think, you know, when change is coming, i think thats when theres the hardest pushback sometimes. Like, the way this is coming, the change is coming, and you know, keep leaning into people and things and more importantly yourself, because at the end of the day, you have to be on your own side. Nikki, thank you for showing up as yourself. I know youre creating space for other people to do the same. Quick heads up about tomorrow night. But that could soon change thanks to an online movement. Last week, congress set aside funding that would pay white house interns. The draft bill would also give interns in the House Of Representatives a raise. Its all part of the push to diversify the federal government by getting rid of Unpaid Internships. Former capitol hill Intern Carlos Markveda is leading the fight. I personally had three Unpaid Internships in congress, the white house, and the european parliament, so for me its something thats very personal. And i noticed when its unpaid, it leaves out a lot of folks, in particular people of color in working class. I noticed as walking down the highways of congress, that the only person that looked like me there was the custodian. 2017, fewer than 10 of House Members paid their interns. That number is now over 90 and the payoff, potentially huge, helping change the face of american leadership. After all, look at these two former congressional interns. They are now the second and third most powerful women in american government. And that is why carlos mark vera, along with his movement, pay our interns, is our loudest voice of the week.
