Many of us, certainly still a bit of rain to come through the rest of day. Particularly through Northern England, into wales, a few scattered showers moving in across the north and the east of scotland and that cool northerly breeze. Sunshine for Northern Ireland, and for southern parts of england in particular, Sunnier Skies developing two. One o too. Temperatures in the warmest spots getting up to 21 but contrast that with stornoway, just 12 degrees through the afternoon. Now into the evening hours, one or two heavy showers across parts of wales, perhaps the midlands, east anglia, too. If you catch a shower, there could be some hail and thunder. Most of the rain should ease away through the course of tonight. It stays cloudy with Mist And Fog around, temperatures in double figures first thing tomorrow. So into saturdays weather. This fairly stubborn slow moving system is with us but it tends to peter out. So through the weekend, a bit of sunshine a few showers on saturday, by sunday more persistent rain is set to arrive in Southern England. But let us look at saturday, for england and wales spells of sunshine for most areas, a few scattered heavy showers, perhaps the Odd Thunderstorm as well but many places looking dry. 22 degree, a Bit Cooler again, temperatures in the mid teens further north. Some sunshine across the north of scotland though. And then looking ahead towards the second half of the weekend and this area of low pressure peps up as it moves its way through southern parts of england. Some uncertainty about how far north this rain gets, particularly affecting i think anywhere south of the m corridor, but for the rest of the m corridor, but for the rest of the uk, sunday looks like a better day, so drier and slightly warmer weatherfor day, so drier and slightly warmer weather for parts of Northern England, Northern Ireland and scotland too. The outlook into next week still unsettled wet weather across southern parts of the uk but it does look drier, a bit more summer like further north. Jayne. Thank you. A reminder of our top story. The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, has apologised for breaching social distancing rules after the sun published a photo of him in a close embrace with one of his aides. Downing street has said that the Prime Minister has accepted Matt Hancocks apology for breaching Self Distancing guidelines. The spokesperson for the Prime Minister was asked by reporters why Matt Hancock was still in post. They said, i will point you to the Health Secretarys statement. The Health Secretarys statement. The Health Secretary set out that he accepted he breached the guidelines. Boris johnson considers the matter closed. Asked whether borisjohnson has full confidence in Matt Hancock, the spokesman replied yes. That is the latest briefing to journalists within the last 25 minutes or so. About 30 minutes before that we did have a statement from the Health Secretary. In a statement, Mr Hancock said, i accept that i breached the social Distancing Guidance in these circumstances. I have let people down and am very sorry. I remain focused on working to get the country out of this pandemic and would be grateful for privacy for my family on this personal matter. In the last 30 minutes the Prime Minister saying that he accepts the Health Secretarys apology. Before we had that briefing from number ten we had that briefing from number ten we heard from the Labour Party from the Labour Party. The Labour Party has called for the Health Secretary to resign. My colleague Annita Mcveigh has been speaking to the party chair, anneliese dodds. Unfortunately, this saga seems yet again to indicate that there is one rule for the conservatives and another rule for everybody else. And ultimately the responsibility for the management of the Health Secretary does lie with the Prime Minister. We have already seen those revelations of course coming out from the person who was a Top Adviser to the Prime Minister, dominic cummings, which seem to suggest the Prime Minister had no faith in his Health Secretary. Now today, of course, discovering that it appears the Health Secretary may well have been breaking the rules that others had to follow. And of course, we have been through a period when grandparents have not been able to hug their grandchildren. Ive just come off a call with some of my local nurses whove been following the rules to the letter. Who are really struggling currently to deal with the impact of covid still. I honestly think that now is the time when the prime Minister Needs to get a grip on the situation. He simply has not done so until now. He needs to act. Is it tenable for Matt Hancock not to say anything about this . He has not commented so far, has he . I dont think it is tenable, but i also dont think it is tenable for the Prime Minister to remain so silent about all of this. As i mentioned before, he appeared to have no confidence in his Helath Secretary for a very long time and yet did nothing. He continues to do nothing. And of course, all of this is taking place when our nhs is still under tremendous pressure. Our nurses, doctors, Health Care Assistance still working incredibly hard. Now with the biggest Waiting List on record and yet we dont have a grip from government on this. And i think those people who are struggling with in our nhs, those patients who are not able to get the care they need, will wonder why we still got the Health Secretary clinging on in this way and a Prime Minister appearing to back him. That brings me to my next point, borisjohnson is a Prime Minister who backs his ministers, isnt he . Several ministers have been through difficult patches, shall we say, and there has been no suggestion that he would sack them or that they would go under his leadership. Unfortunately, the Prime Minister appears privately to have no confidence in his Health Secretary and yet, he has done nothing, it appears, to remedy the situation. Quite frankly, i dont care about the relationship between the two of them. I dont care about peoples private lives. I care about the impact of this on the running of our nhs, on Peoples Confidence in Covid Rules and our country getting through this crisis. Sorry to interrupt you, but do you care about the relationship between the two of them if they were in contact at a time when we were all being told that there should not be any contact between households . Well, this is the big question. If the rules have been broken, and if they have been, yet again, this will be a case of the conservatives believing there is one rule for them and another rule for everyone else to follow. As i said, this has been at a time when, you know, the great british public have been following those rules. As i said, ivejust been speaking to many nurses who have been going well beyond the Call Of Duty to make sure the at those rules are followed so that people are kept safe, so that especially the very vulnerable are kept safe from this disease. Really everybody should be taking responsibility for this, not least those right at the apex of government, like the Health Secretary and indeed, the Prime Minister who seems to still be backing him. What scrutiny would you like to see of the actual Appointment Process of this woman . This raises huge questions and it is not the first time that the conservatives have been really in the Firing Line over their appointments, their procurement practices, their contracts. Really we need to understand why this appointment was made, ghe circumstances around it. We need to understand, i would say, also the relationships between lobbying here and what is taking place in government. There are many different connections between those involved. We need to understand what parliamentary passes may have been provided, whether that was appropriate. Ultimately, the Health Secretary and, indeed, his prime Minister Need to be transparent here. They need to be open and honest otherwise questions will be raised around whether rules have been broken. Of course, we are talking about Taxpayers Money at a time when so many people are struggling. And then there are those big questions about whether their money, public money, could have been misused. Anneliese dodds was speaking just before the comment from the Prime Minister . Spokesperson saying that borisjohnson has accepted the apology from the Health Secretary. We have just had third latest R Number. The R Number in england is unchanged this week, so it stands between 1. 2 and 1. 4, so the same as the previous weeks figure. That means on average every ten people infected will infect between 12 and 14 other people. So the R Number currently standing at the same as last week. A us judge will sentence former Police Office Derek chauvin for the murder of George Floyd in minneapolis today. Floyd was killed in may last year when chauvin . Knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes. The horrific incident, caught on camera, spurred a reckoning with Americas History of racial injustice and sparked a global movement. Prosecutors have asked the court for a sentence of 30 years in prison. Nada tawfik has more. I find the defendant guilty. This is the moment Derek Chauvin became the first white Police Officer in the state of minnesota to be convicted of killing a black man. It was a positive step, many felt, towards justice. His upcoming sentencing has the potential to set a precedent for real accountability. The judge might think this is just such a serious case of such notoriety that he is just going to give a greater time, i think he will go above 25 years, 25 30. The judge has said he will consider how much chauvin abused his position of Trust And Authority and how he treated George Floyd, with particular cruelty. George floyd i cannot. Breathe, i cannot breathe. This became a place for the community together and try to heal. It clear speaking with residents though that there is still a deep distrust of the police and its a problem that wont be solved by one court holding one man accountable. Nobody that got killed by the police is coming back so its like, we all know how they feel. If that had been a white guy, he wouldnt have did that. He did it because it was a black and he thought he could get away with it. The former officer has never expressed remorse and could choose to speak for the first time at his sentencing. His lawyers are pushing for probation instead ofjail time. Once more, the citizens of minneapolis will be waiting anxiously for a decision out of this courthouse. It will be a defining moment for america. Nada tawfik, Bbc News, minneapolis. The father of the belarusian Opposition Blogger Roman protasevich, who was arrested last month when his plane was diverted to minsk, has told the bbc his son has been moved from prison to House Arrest. They dont know much, you know . They also knew that his girlfriend, sofia sapega, was also moved to House Arrest and we also managed to speak to her parents and they were able to travel to belarus from russia and they saw their daughter at a restaurant. The time of that Visit Wasnt limited. It all started with a picture, a photo published Yesterday Online where some people saw in the park two people resembling Protasevich And Sapega talking to one of the journalists on camera. What happens next is unclear, but the parents of Roman Protasevich are sure that it is a positive sign in terms of the Well Being of roman, but they think some bargaining is going on. The parents say there are no communications, No One is talking to them. They were not able to speak to roman yet, so they are completely in the dark, but an Opposition Leader said according to her sources, some of the russian diplomats were calling some European Diplomats yesterday and saying that some political prisoners would be moved to under arrest. These are all small signs which give a hints that this might be a part of a bigger game by the russian authorities, but the exact terms of this game is of course unclear, and the fact is that this game involves human lives. There are fears there could be an increase in drowning this summer as the number of people heading to the coast is expected to double. The rnli and the Royal Life Saving Society have launched a Campaign Offering Advice on Water Safety. Our Reporter Luxmy Gopal has been to see an Open Water Swimming Group at the Royal Docks in east london. Open water swimming has increased in popularity during the pandemic. Open water swimming has increased in popularity during the pandemic. Organisations are worried there could be an increase in the number of people drowning this summer. More than 350 people died to accidental drowning each year in the uk and there is a campaign to try to educate people in Water Safety this summer. Rick, if you could talk us through, we have men in the water, lets assume he is finding himself in difficulty in the water. What would you do . Our Life Guard spotted the casualty who is in trouble and has done a throw rope rescue. He is pulling him to the side, then he will comfort him and get him out of the water safely. If somebody finds themselves in that situation, what should they do . If they are on their own, they should stop moving, lay on their back, float and acclimatised to the cold water, otherwise they will get cold water shock. A lot of people make the mistake of following somebody into the water to try to save them. That is the last thing they should ever do, because they need to stay dry and warm and safe and able to rescue somebody else in trouble. What is your concern about this summer in particular, with the fact that pools have been closed so there havent been as many people learn in Water Safety education during lockdown and more of us heading to local destinations, what is the worry about how this might impact on the number of people drowning . You will definitely get a lot of people not understanding the warm outside, the difference. Those messages need to be given hard and fast to the people to get some education beforehand. Rick, thank you. What are your key messages when it comes to try to get people to stay safe near water . Always do some research at the place you are going to swim. Make sure you are notjumping in, because with tactics on the risk of taking on water, so secondary drowning. I know the temptation is to try to take off as quickly as possible because you think it will warm you up, but that could be at risk of cardiac arrest. Dont play with anything that is left outside to help people, like rings or ropes. Chess, thank you. The rnli says it is expecting it to be their busiest summer ever, but the Message Isnt that we cant go and enjoy our beautiful beaches and inland waterways, but to know how we can do that safely. Scientists in israel say theyve discovered a previously unknown form of early human after studying fragments of a fossilised skull and jawbone. They were found at an Archaeological Site near tel aviv. Its thought they could explain genetic links between modern humans and neanderthals. The bbc s Tim Allman has the story. Isnt it amazing how something so small can be so significant . A Skull Fragment is analysed by scientists in tel aviv, but this is no ordinary Skull Fragment. Along with part of the jawbone, it was unearthed at nesher ramla, an Archaeological Site once used by a cement plant, and they may well answer the questions about the development of human life on earth. Nesher Ramla Findings are the missing piece in the puzzle that can help us explain open questions in Human Evolutionary History and can give us an indication of the origin, the Source Population of neanderthals that lived later in europe. It is believed neanderthals, the cousins of modern humans, died out around 40,000 years ago. But these fragments are from a species much older than that and suggest the neanderthal story may be much more different to what we previously imagined. Now we can say that its probably that they originate in the levant, in our region, rather than in europe, as many researchers thought until now. Nesher ramla may have lived alongside and even mated with Homo Sapiens for more than 100,000 years. These arent just fragments of bone, they are pieces of an evolutionary jigsaw. Tim allman, Bbc News. Now its time for a look at the weather with sarah keith lucas. Good afternoon. It is a day of mixed fortunes out there weather wise. Some of us are keeping a lot of cloud which is bringing some outbreaks of rain. In other areas, The Cloud will break up and things will brighten up. Through the course of the weekend we are expecting that mix of weather types to continue. A few showers here and there on saturday, perhaps more persistent rain in the south by the time we get to sunday. Back to the here and now, we have low pressure in charge at the moment. These fronts are slow moving. There will be outbreaks of rain in Northern England and into wales. Further South And East about 21 degrees. For the North And West that will be high teens. Through this evening. Most of the rain does tend to ease overnight, but it stays quite cloudy with Mist And Fog around the coasts and hills, certainly quite mild with temperatures between ten and 12 degrees to start up your weekend. Into saturday, that area of low pressure that is with us today is still lingering, but it will tend to fail a little bit. These Weather Fronts are not producing too much in the way of rainfall. Quite cloudy conditions for many of us, patchy rain for Southern Scotland and Northern England. Some showers popping up in the midlands. There will be some sunshine in the southern half of the uk. Cloudier for Northern Ireland and Southern Scotland. Some practice to put the far north west. Moving through Saturday Night and into sunday, this area of low pressure is still with us. It might get a bit of a Pep Up as we see some Rain Moving in from the south. A bit of uncertainty about where well see these outbreaks of rain on sunday. Certainly along the English Channel coast we will see some showers. Generally, the further north you are it should stay predominantly dry with sunny spells on sunday and temperatures on the up, about 21 degrees for glasgow, 22 in london, but there will be rain lingering in the south. We will continue to see heavy showers for Southern England for the first part of the working week, but turning drier and warmer later on. This is Bbc News, im ben mundy.
