To ordering a drink in the pub, we meet the older generation getting to grips with a world more reliant on the internet than ever before. Dont underestimate us. Thats the message from the Welsh Team who are now in amsterdam, getting ready to take on Denmark Tomorrow in the last 16 of Euro 2020. Its a brighter day for parts of scotland and Northern Ireland but Wetterfor Scotland and Northern Ireland but wetter for england and wales, and for some of you, a good 10 Degrees Cooler than yesterday. I will have the full forecast here on breakfast. Its friday the 25th ofjune. Our top story. Uk residents can visit the balearic islands, Malta And Madeira from wednesday of next week, with no requirement to quarantine on return. Theyre among 16 places which have been added to the governments green List But Travel industry leaders say the announcement is not enough to save them from another missed summer. Our Transport Correspondent Caroline Davies has the details. No roar of the engines, silent and static. Yesterday Gatwick Airport had 69 passenger flights. This time of year pre pandemic, they would have had between 800 and 900. As the school holidays inch closer, the Green List is increasingly critical for the industry, but Yesterdays Announcement is good news for some. After over a month of hoping, malta is one of the countries that will go green from next wednesday. Bermuda and barbados will also go green. But all of the new additions, apart from malta, are on the green Watch List, meaning that the government is warning that they are at risk of going to amber. The Red List is also getting longer with six additions, including tunisia and uganda. The Green List does not go far enough for the industry. Were delighted the balearics and Malta And Madeira have been put onto the Green List. But it is disappointing that, you know, the government still dont seem to be following the data and the science because many more destinations should have been put onto the Green List. And we would encourage, you know, a safe and sustainable opening of travel to really start to ramp up now. The uk Travel Industry is desperate to see more people setting off on trips. But its notjust about the uks Green List. Its also about which countries will let Uk Visitors in. Germanys chancellor Angela Merkel said yesterday that she wants to see the eu having a more unified approach on travel rules. To stop the spread of a Delta Variant, shes urged other countries to impose quarantine, as germany has done, on uk arrivals. But what about fully vaccinated travellers . The Uk Government did say that it was looking at removing quarantine for them, but not until later in the summer. We see that there is a case for double vaccination, fully vaccinated, meaning that you perhaps dont have to quarantine. So we can taKe Those countries in the Amber List and allow people to come back without having to do the quarantine that youd have to do for amber, but not yet, partly because, of course, not everybody has been offered a vaccine yet. And secondly, because the scientists are still working on the implications. So there are a number of different questions which still need to be answered. It wont come soon enough for sarah and peter, who live in america. Both are fully vaccinated and due to travel in a few weeks. Sarah hasnt seen her parents in two years. Were not talking about holidays, its not a holiday we want to do. I want to see my family, my parents, and its the same for so many people around the world. I really dont see any reason why i it cant happen now with a negative test to fly and fully vaccinated. Why not . The new list opens up some much longed for destinations, but International Travel is yet to take off, and the warnings are that this summer will be far from smooth. Caroline davies, Bbc News. One of the places which has been added to the green Watch List is ibiza. 0ur Europe Correspondent Anna Holligan sent this report from the island. Yay this was the news theyd been waiting for four months. Going great, going great british tourists usually make up about A Million of the 4 Million foreign visitors to these mediterranean bars every year. Absolutely ecstatic, I Cant even tell you how important this is to all of us as a Tourist Industry in ibiza, its massive. We are waiting for the brits to arrive, to be honest, all tourism is good but everyone knows, any resort around the world, that the british spend the most money, its fact. Its the music that fuels and feeds these islands. Covid rules means these iconic venues that usually have queues around the block are still shut. You know, youve got these huge enormous clubs with hundreds and hundreds of staff in each, from the cleaners to the bartenders, to the waiters and the djs. Theyre all out of work. A pilot is taking Place Tomorrow to see whether its safe to let these places reopen. Even then, for now, dancing will only be allowed outside. Its a delicate and diplomatic balancing act. The desire to allow british tourists to return while keeping new variants of the virus at bay. Its now or never to keep this vital Island Economy afloat. Notjust for the tourists, those whose livelihoods depend on them. Not just for the tourists, but those whose livelihoods depend on them. Anna holligan, Bbc News, ibiza. Lets get more now from our political correspondent, ben wright. Good morning. There are going to be lots of critical reactions to this, the travel update, and the introduction of the Green Watchlist which gives the government some leeway to potentially change return plans. If countries are on the Green Watchlist, that Guarantee Isnt there. 0nly Malta gets the exemption at the moment. Labour said it welcomed a limited expansion of the Green List if the evidence is there to back it up but said that the Amber List, the middle one, should be scrapped because it is causing so much confusion. They know the frustration that people feel, not just wanting to the frustration that people feel, notjust wanting to go on holiday but people who have not seen their friends and family over the last 18 months in the world and they want to be able to go and come back without a self isolating on their return if they have had both vaccinations. If they have had both vaccinations. If they have had both vaccinations. If they have been Double Jabbed. I understand the plans will come out within a month so perhaps the end of july, beginning of august, the government will get rid of the requirement to self isolate for ten days with countries on the Amber List. That will not come in time for people who plan to get to europe within the next four or five weeks or even into the summer holiday. There remains a huge uncertainty over Summer Plan to travel despite the tweaks announced Last Night. And well be speaking to the Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, at 7. 30am. If you are thinking of it, someone else usually is, thats how it works any adult in england will be able to get vaccinated against coronavirus this weekend with no need to book an appointment. Football stadia, theatres and Supermarket Car parks are among the hundreds of venues being turned into temporary Vaccine Centres, as Matt Graveling reports. Whether you got it at a cathedral or a mosque. A stadium or racecourse. 44 Million of us have now had at least one dose of the vaccine. But with 17 of the population still unprotected, the nhs is now putting even more effort into the final furlong. We want as many people as possible to get vaccinated ahead ofjuly the 19th. So this weekend, were Opening Hundreds Of Pop Up Walk In Centres where you can just turn up, you dont need to book, and grabajab. More than One Million appointments were made in just two days when over 185 became eligible last week. Its hoped the surge will continue this weekend with venues like Edgbaston Cricket Ground and arsenals Emirates Stadium becoming huge Pop Up centres to help supply demand. Weve noticed that there are particular areas of our communities that were really working with to try and deliver what were calling a hyper local response, literally going door to door to understand the reasons that people are being more hesitant about taking up the vaccine. The Government Hope byJuly 19th, all adults will have had theirfirstjab, a figure currently at 83 . Second jabs are also available at some centres this weekend. But if youre over 40, it must have been at least eight weeks since your first. Or if youre under 40, there must be a 12 week gap. We know vaccines are very safe and highly effective, and also effective against the new Delta Variant that were seeing in the Country. The more people who get vaccinated, the safer we will all be and of course, the freer we will all be. And its this Delta Variant thats believed to be behind the recent climb in covid cases, now at almost 17,000 a day. A number the government is desperate to drive down before they open up. Matt graveling, Bbc News. Accident and Emergency Departments across the uk are seeing Record Levels of young children for this time of year with most suffering a mild fever which can be treated at home. The surge is being caused by viruses which would normally flourish in the winter but the spread was delayed this year because of the lockdown. Our Health Reporter Philippa roxby has more. Record numbers of young children are being seen at Accident And Emergency departments around the uk. Doctors say most have a mild fever which can be treated at home. They say they are overwhelmed. I was on a couple of mondays ago when we sought nearly 300 patients in a day. We are seeing lots of young children less than one year old, with fevers, a bit of vomiting, may be a bit of diarrhoea, who generally look quite well but there is parental anxiety about their symptoms. We simply dont have enough staff to keep up with that demand. A e doctors across the uk have told the Royal College of paediatricians and child health, theyve seen large increases in children attending, particularly those under five. In some places, demand has doubled over normal levels. 0ne Doctor in belfast said she was extremely worried if what would happen if numbers continued to rise. In liverpool, there are reports of pressure on inpatient beds. And a doctor in edinburgh spoke of lots of children with viral illnesses that dont need hospital treatment. Children going to A E are not unwell with covid. But with other infections normally seen in winter. Children have been in lockdown since the early part of last year. And particularly younger children, their immune systems just havent been challenged in any kind of way by the normal viruses that we have around as all the time. Around us all the time. Now lockdown has been eased, they are now being exposed to what are just the usual viruses. And of course now they are becoming unwell. 1a month old theo was seriously unwell. Two weeks ago, he ended up in A E. I was really frightened, very scared. Especially because he had all the spots all over his body and you always think the worst. With a high temperature, as high as it was, you know, we were thinking it was something seriously wrong. A e is the correct place to take a child in an emergency, but there are times when parents should trust their instincts. Fever phobia is so common, and its everywhere in the community where people get worried about the fever rather than their child. And what i try and tell people is, if youre just worried about the symptoms, if you think the child is fine, its just the fever youre worried about, orjust the Diarrhoea Orjust the vomiting, actually, your child is likely to be ok. Because you know your child best and if theyre well, they probably will be well. Susie did the right thing. She gave Theo Liquid Paracetamol to try and bring his temperature down, then called 111 for advice when he didnt improve. Doctors say A E services should be freed up to help seriously ill children like him. Phillippa roxby, Bbc News. Whether its a Family Zoom Chat or ordering groceries online, most of us have relied on technology a lot more during the pandemic. But not everyone has access to it and there are fears some older people are being left behind. Fi lamdin reports on whats being done to bridge the digital divide. 82 year old ray has always loved to paint. But when the Country went into lockdown, all his Art Classes were cancelled and he had nothing to do. You tend to feel a bit lonely. I didnt go out. Well, we couldnt at the time cos of covid, there was nowhere to go anyway. And i was sat here and all i had to do really was watch the television. So he took the plunge and went online. I feel now that the worlds my oyster, really. As i zoom more and more, i go further afield. Its giving me more get up and go, you know, because ive got something else to do. I said, that rules me out. That was ok, but it made me feel a bit inadequate. Wed love to have more people to gain digital skills, but it takes resources and time. So with more funding and resources, we will be able to help a lot more people benefit from using the internet. So that was a great painting ive seen. | back in wales with restrictions easing, this digital duo are now able to meet in person. Be responsible around water. While they dont have the statistics yet, the Royal Life Saving Society fears the pandemic may have seen an increase in drownings with pool closures, more domestic holidays and Open Water swimming. We really want people to enjoy the water in the uk this summer, but people may not be as aware of how to keep themselves safe and enjoy the waterways around the uk safely. Lots of people will be swimming in lakes and at the beach, and we want to make sure everyones got the information they need to do that safely and enjoy themselves. Are you all right at swimming . This Water Safety Session is among the societys free resources for parents and schools to help make up for lost learning. As a result of lockdowns during the pandemic, more than Five Million Swimming Lessons have been missed and with them, key education on Water Safety for children. Its really important that people get back into their swimming clubs, back into their leisure centres, back to Swimming Lessons, back to life saving lessons and learn these skills. If someones in the water, you want to shout at them, like, come over here, so they know i where theyre going and they come to you and theyre safe. Weve been learning to, like, help people breathe and weve been learning to hang onto life buoys. One and two and three. The office for nationals statistics shows among South Asian groups the uptake has increased to 86 and among black communities it has increased from 55 to 68 , but that is still quite a lot lower than the national average where 80 of people have had their first vaccine. Lots of numbers have had their first vaccine. Lots of numbers. One have had their first vaccine. Lots of numbers. One of have had their first vaccine. Lots of numbers. One of the things there are concerns about is london is lagging behind the rest of the Country when it comes to take up. You are in west london. Do you have any insight into why perhaps that may be . We have had local Community Leaders coming in and talking to their congregations and that really is starting to Make A difference, particularly in asian communities. There is another controversy in itself dr sarahjarvis, very much. Time for the sport. I am taking you to amsterdam. Time for the sport. I am taking you to amsterdam. The time for the sport. I am taking you to amsterdam. The welsh time for the sport. I am taking you to amsterdam. The Welsh Team i time for the sport. I am taking you i to amsterdam. The Welsh Team were in rome, baku, now amsterdam building up rome, baku, now amsterdam building up to B Game against denmark. There is is wonderful mental attitude from wales because they know they are the underdogs, they know virtually all of the fans will be from denmark. They will recognise the neutrals around the world will be supporting denmark because of the christian eriksen story, which you can understand. A lot of sympathy for denmark. But wales seem to revel in this environment. It denmark. But wales seem to revel in this environment. This environment. It spurs them on even more the message from the Welsh Team settling into their amsterdam, base is really that denmark should not underestimate them, ahead of their Euro 2020 last 16 tie tomorrow. The welsh have swapped rome for amsterdam, as they set their sights on trying to match or even better their performance at Euro 2016 where they reached the semi finals. That should be a warning to any opponent now. Were always underestimated, ithink, and, you know, you look at our squad, weve got really good players all across the park. And come this tournament, weve played well in a couple of games, weve played well in patches and we found ourselves in a good position and, yeah, anything from now is a bonus, really. England are closer to home, training at St Georges Park and have the luxury of playing at wembley again when they host germany next tuesday. The germans famously knocked england out of Euro 96 on penalties there, but the new Generation Arent haunted by that defeat. Its a special game for the players, for the fans, for everyone, for the neutrals watching the big game, and thats what you want to be playing in these tournament. So its very exciting. Everybody will be looking forward to it. And, like i said, forthe players, weve just got to stay focused and make sure we just give everything on the pitch and have no regrets. Scoring an Away Goal in Club Competititions in europe, scoring an Away Goal in Club Competititions in Europe Wont be so important any more, as uefa has announced that it will scrap the away Goals Rule in all European Club competitions from next season. The formula one World Champion Lewis hamilton says he worries for people after it was announced that therell be a Capacity Crowd at silverstone for the British Grand Prix next month. The event has been included in the Governments Event Research programme. That means 1a0,000 spectators will be at the circuit for the race on the 18th ofjuly. Hamilton gave the news a cautious welcome. Im kind of split. One, I Cant tell you how excited i am to see people, and firstly to see the british crowd, cos it is the best crowd of the whole year, so. Obviously, last year we didnt have them. So to be able to see them and feel the energy that they bring into a weekend. 0n the second, obviously, of course, i watch the news so i hear about the cases going up massively in the uk, and. Great voices. And a great message, welcome to the world and the banister. Lets look at the weather heading into the weekend. Yesterday it was an odd misty, drizzly day in the north west. I dont know if that was reflected elsewhere. Lovely to the South And East and across eastern areas. Good morning. This was the view in aberdeen. Glorious day, temperatures here 2a degrees, as it was across much of Eastern Scotland, North East England, peaking at 25, 26. Fast forward 2a hours to this afternoon, look at the difference. A good ten to 13 Degrees Cooler. That can be seen certainly in alnwick and this is how it looks this morning on the coast. There waves will Pick Up a bit more is that reason strengthens through the day. A much Cooler Day for some, all due to an area of low pressure. That brought The Rain Across Western Areas yesterday, it is pushing southwards and eastwards and dragging in a northerly wind with it. Heaviest of the rain at the moment across parts of Northern England, southern scotland, the isle of man. A batch of Rain Pushing Eastwards across the southern half of england and wales. Even if it is dry in south East Anglia. The rain returned into Northern Ireland and wales later. Northern england continue to see some rain at times and the rather chilly north to North Easterly wind. A few showers in the east of scotland but Western Scotland, Northern Ireland, today than yesterday with sunny spells. But it will feel cooler than it has done. Temperatures will not get much above 12 degrees. My oldest down to the far south of england where they will be Afternoon Sunshine up to 19 or 20. Will be Afternoon Sunshine up to 19 or20. Could will be Afternoon Sunshine up to 19 or 20. Could be some heavy showers around and went into the Dating Place of the into wales, southern scotland, The Rain Easierfor the night the place so you might get a glimpse of the Back End of the Full Moon but Temperatures Tonight should drop should not drop a way to much given the amount of cloud around. In the weekend, some optimism to the north, High Pressure builds in. A week when different in southern scotland, just lingering which will continue to produce outbreaks of rain especially in the morning. It should brighten through the day. Further south, morning. It should brighten through the day. Furthersouth, one morning. It should brighten through the day. Further south, one or two Showers Brewing but it should be brighter for many and with winds like especially carcinoid it should feeljust like especially carcinoid it should feel just a touch like especially carcinoid it should feeljust a touch warmer. Particularly to Eastern Parts of scotland and North East England. As we go into sunday, an area of low pressure in that Bay Of Biscay will throw another batch of rain to southernmost counties of england and wales this week could be wet on sunday for some but for most, not a bad day, a lot of bright weather, particularly for scotland and Northern Ireland at the final of and the is pretty strong and temperatures should respond. About where they should be for the time of year, 18 to 20 degrees. As weve been hearing, Travel Industry leaders have criticised the governments latest update to the rules on foreign trips. Good morning. You have been talking about the change in those lists. There is a lot of anger in the Travel Industry that the rules are not changed enough to let people get back to any sort of normality. They dont feel those rules go far enough. International travel they say should be allowed. As we know, each Country is categorised on a traffic light system, Green Countries can be visited without the need to self isolate on your return but you will still need tests. The government says you should not travel to and that list and read list countries for leisure, but if you do, maybe for work, you will have to isolate for ten days when you get back. That list is reviewed every three weeks based on the percentage of the population that has been vaccinated and the rate of infection. You will remember at the last review three weeks ago whatcha got was removed from list, causing Chaos Thousands of Holiday Makers. What is new on this list . These other countries that have now been added to the Green List. It comes into effect wednesday. It includes hotspots like new or can it beta as well as motor. Huge relief for travel firms, airlines, but also the hotels and restaurants that rely heavily on tourists. Jankarl runs a hotel in malta. My first reaction is that obviously this will hopefully give boost to the next months. This will hopefully give obviously, we know that Pick Up will not be the usual trend because obviously its all going to be last minute still the travellers will be hesitant. However, at least this will help us get back on our feet, which we all know it will take much longer than the next three to four months. But at least with the Uk Market now starting at the end of this month, we should hopefully start seeing some good numbers, at least for the summertime. That is the view from malta and while some countries have gone green they have also gone on this so called green Watchlist Meaning they could turn amber at any short notice, even while youre still away. The and and Red List will cover the majority of the world, and this morning the Travel Industry is angry. It says the government has not gone far enough and is being far too cautious in its approach. The boss of ba has warned jobs are at stake if the industry misses another summer. 0ne Stake if the industry misses another summer. One thing to watch, the government has said that those who have had two jabs will be allowed to travel to Amber List countries later in the Country deliver customer without having to quarantine but Thats Notjust without having to quarantine but thats not just yet. Temperatures are in the Mid Teens in celsius. Its still feeling rather muggy and humid, too, and there will be more showery outbreaks of rain as we head through the morning. 0ur Weather Front is moving its way southeastwards. Still plenty of cloud as we head through the afternoon, maybe still one or two showers, but generally a bit drier for the second half of the day. And then towards the end of the afternoon, we could see some of this cloud break up to give us some brighter spells from the west. Top temperatures still a fairly decent 19 or 20 degrees celsius, and weve got more of a northerly wind blowing this time and that will Pick Up at times. As we head through this evening and overnight, then it should stay mostly dry always the chance of a few showers, there will be some cloud breaks, too, and temperatures will drop a little bit lower than they did Last Night, but still in double figures as we head into saturday morning. Over the weekend, low pressure is sitting towards the south of us and therell still be a few showers, quite a fresh northeasterly wind. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt. 0ur headlines today. Popular Holiday Destinations like ibiza, majorca and barbados are added to the uks Green List for travel, but the government warns it could change at short notice. With cases rising in the uk, we ask How Welcome Will British tourists be. Any adult in england can get a vaccine without an appointment this weekend at walk in centres across the Country. And from Video Calls to ordering a drink in the pub, we meet the older generation getting to grips with a world more reliant on the internet than ever. Dont underestimate us say the Welsh Team, who have swapped rome for amsterdam getting ready to take on Denmark Tomorrow in the first match of the Euro 2020 knock out stage. Prior to today in parts of Western Scotland and Northern Ireland but elsewhere it will be outbreaks of rain, brighter in some areas. Its friday the 25th ofjune. Our top story. Uk residents can visit Holiday Hotspots including ibiza, mallorca, Malta And Madeira from wednesday of next week with no requirement to quarantine on return. Theyre among 16 places which have been added to the governments green List But Travel industry leaders say the announcement is not enough to save them from another missed summer. 0ur Transport Correspondent Caroline Davies has the details. Lets get more now from our political correspondent, ben wright. Good political correspondent, ben wright. Morning. It dl on good morning. It depends very much on how you look at this. If you wanted to go on a jaunt to ibiza very soon, you might be very pleased this morning. If you are part of the Travel Industry you might be thinking, why havent they let more places in . And if you are a critic of the government, you might be questioning still the whole system of the traffic lights. Of the traffic lights. Yes, i think thats exactly of the traffic lights. Yes, i think thats exactly right. Of the traffic lights. Yes, i think thats exactly right. It of the traffic lights. Yes, i think thats exactly right. It is thats exactly right. It is incremental steps in expanding this list which leaves everybody a bit dissatisfied and confused about where we go next. The Green List has been expanded a bit and people can now book their flights to majorca, ibiza, barbados, British Antarctic Territory if you want somewhere a bit colder, but there is a big question over even most of those countries because they remain on the Green Watchlist which means they could slip back to amber at any point, you could find us up on a beachin point, you could find us up on a beach in ibiza and suddenly being told that when you come back to the uk, Self Isolation will have to happen after all. Booking a holiday remains a pretty chancy thing to do, even though certainly businesses in those Holiday Destinations and Tour Operators and airlines will be very pleased that there have been expansions. The big Holiday Destinations that people tend to go to in the summer, the European Countries like france and italy and spain and the united states, they remain on the Amber List so people will still need to self isolate for ten days on they come back from any of those. This whole it will not be updated for three weeks so if people are thinking the whole this will not be updated for another three weeks as well, so if people are thinking about the summer, there is still a lot of uncertainty. And well be speaking to the Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, at 7. 30am. If you have any questions for him about your travel plans, you can email them to us or tweet using the hashtag bbc breakfast. Any adult in england will be able to get vaccinated against coronavirus this weekend with no need to book an appointment. Football stadia, theatres and Supermarket Car parks are among the hundreds of venues being turned into temporary Vaccine Centres, as Matt Graveling reports. Whether you got it at a cathedral or a mosque. A stadium or racecourse. AA Million of us have now had at least one dose of the vaccine. The Government Hope byjuly19th, all adults will have had theirfirstjab, a figure currently at 83 . Second jabs are also available at some centres this weekend. But if youre over a0, it must have been at least eight weeks since your first. Or if youre under a0, there must be a 12 week gap. Us president Joe Biden has declared a State Of Emergency in miami after a block of flats collapsed there on wednesday night. For the desperate Family Members, though, the wait for information is nothing short of unbearable. I think theyre gone. I dont want to be pessimistic, but they. Weve been calling them nonstop. No reply, nobody knows anything, we dont have information right now. The site of this building so destroyed is a terrible reminder to the people of this community of what they have lost. And it is a sign to the authorities that they must begin to establish what happened here no matter where it leads. Matt, we were paying close attention earlier on to your interesting graphic, lovely picture of the Strawberry Moon there, but i was going to a reference those Temperature Changes from yesterday to today, which are dramatic. Yes, could be as much as 1a Degrees Cooler in some parts, swapping T Shirts forjumpers in 2a hours this is what some of you might have mist yesterday, the Full Moon is always captivating and this picture was taken in basingstoke. Too much cloud for most of you though, that is bringing some Rain Today and there is a chilly breeze in North East scotland and North East England. The Heavy Rain is in Northern England to the south of scotland, a batch of rain pushing eastward across central and southern parts of england, so in East Anglia there is rain on the way. Rain pushes back into wales after brightening up, it will turn heavier, rumbles of thunder in the midlands. Wet in Northern England at the borders of scotland. Temperatures 25 or 26 yesterday in Eastern Scotland, and only 12 degrees this afternoon. It is the same breeze because of the direction that means that to the rest of scotland and Northern Ireland, after thering yesterday you have the Rain Yesterday you have drier and brighter weather is today. Brighter in the South East but will get a few heavy showers. Not a desperately chilly start to the weekend but through the weekend, drier weather especially for the northern half of the uk. Thank you, see you later on. Accident and Emergency Departments across the uk are seeing Record Levels of young children for this time of year with most suffering a mild fever which can be treated at home. The surge is being caused by viruses which would normally flourish in the winter but the spread was delayed this year because the lockdown meant children were not mixing. Our Health Reporter Philippa roxby has more. Record numbers of young children are being seen at Accident And Emergency departments around the uk. Doctors say most have a mild fever which can be treated at home. They say they are overwhelmed. I was on a couple of mondays ago when we saw nearly 300 patients in a day. We are seeing lots of young children less than one year old, with fevers, a bit of vomiting, maybe a bit of diarrhoea, who generally look quite well but there is parental anxiety about their symptoms. We simply dont have enough staff to keep up with that demand. A e doctors across the uk have told the Royal College of paediatricians and child health, theyve seen large increases in children attending, particularly those under five. In some places, demand is double normal levels. And particularly younger children, their immune systems just havent been challenged in any kind of way by the normal viruses that we have around us all the time. Philippa roxby, Bbc News. Every parent wants to do the right thing, if your child is ill and you dont know the reason, you may be wanting to seek attention quickly. That is an important medical viewpoint . That is an important question, medical viewpoint . That is an important question, and i medical viewpoint . That is an important question, and the i medical viewpoint . That is an i important question, and the first thing to say is, we know it is tough. I know its tough, and apparent as well as a doctor, and when your child is ill, or injured, you want to do the right thing. And of course you are worried about them. The first thing to say to parents out there is, Emergency Departments are open for them if it is an emergency. And if you are really worried, you must come to the Emergency Department. Thats the first thing to say. It is true we are seeing large numbers of children with very minor illnesses, the sort of mild cough and cold, fever, that picture described in your report, as well as minor injuries as well. You ask, is that a problem . The answer to that is, not always. But if we are increasingly crowding in childrens Emergency Departments across the Country, it makes it harder for us to provide the right care for really seriously injured or ill children. My hospital is a paediatric major trauma centre, we see children from right across the region, and that is true for many hospitals that are seeing huge pushes at the moment. The ask is for parents to really think about using Emergency Services when It May be possible just to call 111 if all you might need is advice. I5 possible just to call 111 if all you might need is advice. Is it linked, do ou might need is advice. Is it linked, do you think. Might need is advice. Is it linked, do you think, dr magnus, that i do you think, dr magnus, that because of covid, people are more worried than they would be before . The honest truth is, we dont completely know. There is accommodation of factors including things like an increase in the kinds of viruses that we might normally see in winter that we are seeing earlier in the year at the moment, thatis earlier in the year at the moment, that is a concern for many of us because we havent even arrived at 28, which historically and usually is the busiest period for emergency arrived at winter yet, which is the busiest period for Emergency Departments. People are worried because of the Covid Context and who could blame parents for that, but itsjust could blame parents for that, but its just a question of making sure people are trying to get the right help from the right place at the right time and that isnt always an Emergency Department late in the evening which is very crowded for example. That is a hard question and if parents i you think, i will go to me . That is| a hard question and if parents could do that with convincing reliability, then they wouldnt really need us. I guess the really important thing is to remember that there are lots of options available, that is the first thing. 111 is therefore advice, gp surgeries and pharmacies and minor injury units and urgent treatment centres are all open. They are stretched, thats true, our gp colleagues are working incredibly hard at the moment, i know that. Parents should remember that there are options available. In terms of minor illnesses that you describe come the bottom line is this. If your child has a very high fever and lots of other symptoms that are very concerning to you, then they should seek help and advice. Parents should not feel that they have to become their own clinician or diagnostician. But if it is just a fever and the child looks reasonably well, try some liquid paracetamol, make sure they drink plenty of fluids, see how things go and perhaps call 111 if they reallyjust need advice. But the pandemic has meant hes had to come up with some creative ways to prepare for his third games. Theres been times where ive trained on my Pommel Horse literally just behind me in the garden. You know, ive done workouts in my living room, you know, ive. You know, ive had to learn along the way with this one. And competitions have been cancelled, so everybody s in the same boat. Travel now. First of all, the tube the Central Line still has minor delays after a signal failure. Its closed between Lisson Grove and cunningham place. Time for the weather with elizabeth rizzini. Hello, good morning. Its a much milder start to the day than we saw this time yesterday. Temperatures are in the Mid Teens in celsius. Its still feeling rather muggy and humid, too, and there will be more showery outbreaks of rain as we head through the morning. Our Weather Front is moving its way southeastwards. More from me in an Hour Plenty more on our website. Now its back to Naga And Charlie bye for now. Hello, this is breakfast with Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty. Ibiza, mallorca, Malta And Madeira are among the places we can visit from next week without the need to quarantine on return to the uk. However, Travel Industry leaders say the governments Green List the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps joins us now. Very good morning. These details where issued by you midway through the evening Last Night. Can you take us to the government thinking on those countries that you have now put in the Green List . Those countries that you have now put in the Green List . Good morning. We met with put in the Green List . Good morning. We met with the put in the Green List . Good morning. We met with the joint put in the Green List . Good morning. We met with the joint by put in the Green List . Good morning. We met with the joint by a put in the Green List . Good morning. We met with the joint by a security i we met with the joint by a security centre, so these are the scientists who provide the data they have given us the set of countries they say are now safe to visit. We can put them on our Green List. Sometimes with caveats, and we can come to that. So we have added those countries as places are safe to visit. On the other end of the scale they also give us some countries which they have serious concerns about and we have serious concerns about and we have added those to our mentalist countries, you cannot come from those countries at all if you are not british or citizen, and if you do, you have to quarantine in a government hotel. We have acted on both ends of the scale with this particular review and to remind people there are reviews every three weeks. , u, people there are reviews every three weeks. ,. ,. , weeks. People can go through the list themselves weeks. People can go through the list themselves but weeks. People can go through the list themselves but one weeks. People can go through the list themselves but one or weeks. People can go through the list themselves but one or two list themselves but one or two examples. You talk about biometrics, the reasons around the decisions. A lot of attention on the balearic islands, spanish islands. Ibiza, and these are popular with british tourists. We look at the rate they pay the cases per 100,000 there currently. And it is 2a currently. And then you look at a Country, for example, like croatia, which is also a popular destination. That has an equivalent figure of 12. That is per 100,000. When people look at that they might be thinking, how do you come to that decision when, on the face of it, one Country is safer than another . Face of it, one Country is safer than another . , ,. ,. , than another . This is why we have to rel on than another . This is why we have to rely on the than another . This is why we have to rely on the scientists than another . This is why we have to rely on the scientists and than another . This is why we have to rely on the scientists and they than another . This is why we have to rely on the scientists and they look i rely on the scientists and they look at notjust rely on the scientists and they look at not just a rely on the scientists and they look at notjust a 12 or 2a as you describe it, they will look at, is the data published on the international system called gisaid. Do they publish the variance, the carrying out sequencing to publish the variance . What level of vaccination do they have in their own Country and what is the quality of the data . It is notjust simply looking at the level of vaccination. What we had the capacity for last summer, it is a much more sophisticated system now and people can read the detail of that on Whetherjoint Biosecurity Centre have set out what they use. You Whetherjoint Biosecurity Centre have set out what they use. You set out a major have set out what they use. You set out a major caveat have set out what they use. Amongst those countries now on the Green List, almost all of them except multi at. You will correct me if i have this wrong, are also on Green Watchlist all apart from matla. That means you can go and dont have to quarantine on return but at no point, with a go at any point, with no notice, that could change. Point, with no notice, that could chance. ~ ,. ,. ,. ,. , change. We will try not to do that but we have change. We will try not to do that but we have gone change. We will try not to do that but we have gone for change. We will try not to do that but we have gone for maximum l but we have gone for maximum transparency, where we have said, look, this is the information we have. There are some concerns in these particular locations and therefore, be aware that when you book things may have to change, they may have to change at short notice. We have said they are on the Green List, but on the Green Watchlist that people can see exactly what we are seeing in terms of consent. It is true to say almost regardless of where you are travelling, please make sure you have Travel Insurance, that you can change your booking of your flights, that you can change your booking of yourflights, accommodation, and be aware we are not back in 2019 before the whole coronavirus. There are things you will need to consider but hopefully we will be able to get through to the next review in three weeks before we need to Make Any of those decisions, but be aware the situation is fast changing and we want to keep people elected to that. Can you help me with the principle behind the Green Watchlist . Presumably you as a government retained the right, no matter what, if you determine the circumstances are sufficiently worrying, to do that anyway. Isnt that the case . Is it a concrete guarantee, for example, if you go to malta, which is not on the watchlist, is that an absolute guarantee that no matter what happens the government would not change its status . Not change its status . No. Basically not change its status . No. Basically everything not change its status . No. Basically everything is not change its status . No. Basically everything is on. Not change its status . No. | basically everything is on the watchlist basically everything is on the watchlist. , basically everything is on the | watchlist. Then basically everything is on the watchlist. Then why watchlist. That is true. Then why call it a all watchlist. That is true. Then why call it a all countries watchlist. That is true. Then why call it a all countries are call it a all countries are permanently, anything could happen . If you take malta, the only Country in europe with a higher level of vaccination than the uk, and very good system of monitoring, sequencing the coronavirus. It looks unlikely to us that is something that would need to change in the very short term. That is on the Green List. As i explained, particularly with the islands, they typically dont have quite the same capacity for things like sequencing the genome, and so be aware that things might change quickly or we have seen something in the data which makes it more emotional. You are right to say there are no guarantees and we are just trying to provide the best guidance we can but we have seen many times during this virus that things can and do change relatively quickly. We are trying to be as transparent as possible, give people the information we have and they can maKe Their own decisions within the context of this pandemic. John has got in touch viA E mail. We told him you were coming on the programme. He asks, why is there a delay in changing the quarantine requirements for travellers who have had to make outjabs, who are returning to the uk . Yeah they have had two jabs. That is in reference to the bauble you have dangled that some time later in the summer, some of those people going to Amber List countries may be able to, if they have had both vaccinations, not have to quarantine. Why the delay . That is riuht. To quarantine. Why the delay . That is right there to quarantine. Why the delay . That is right. There are to quarantine. Why the delay . Trust is right. There are a lot of things we need to resolve in order to bring this in. One of the biggest things giving everybody the opportunity to have had the second vaccination. I dont know how old john is but if you are 18, you have onlyjust been invited to book your vaccination. There is a fairness decision. There are also problems, thejcvi has yet to say whether children should be given the vaccination or not and we are waiting for the scientific advice. It is a large category that we need to concern ourselves with. Then there is the issue is how you prove someone has a vaccine. Easy for a uk resident, and right now you can download the Nhs App and see your Vaccine Status on their if you hook up your medical records with your gp, something people will probably require returning to the Country once we get to that Amber List taking into account people who are double vaccinated. How do you do that for people from elsewhere, where they do not have the digital electronic system . The point is there is still quite a lot of things we need to do before we are ready to introduce that system of people who have been doubly vaccinated being able to travel from Amber List countries and regarding them as if they are green, in other words not requiring quarantine. We are not ready to do it yet, but again, in the interest of same to people, look, this is what we are looking at and where we are, i wanted to be able to give people a heads up that thatis able to give people a heads up that that is what we are working on with our scientists and that next month i will be able to say more about it. The reality is, for a lot of European Countries, and we know this from the german chancellors comments yesterday, there was a big Holiday Destinations, france, spain, the mainland european nations, we cant go there anyway, they dont want us right now. I presume you are talking to your counterparts there. They seem to be hardening up on that stance, if anything, just when you are hoping to let people travel. What are you hearing in terms of when we may be able to go there, evenif when we may be able to go there, even if you give those countries the Green Light . I even if you give those countries the Green Light . Green light . I think it is understandable Green Light . I think it is understandable if Green Light . Ithink it is understandable if you l Green Light . I think it is. Understandable if you are Green Light . I think it is understandable if you are in germany, and i heard what the chancellor said yesterday, as you have yet to reach the levels of vaccination we have seen here or in malta that you will be more concerned and that may be just a question of waiting for their Vaccination Programme. Different countries in europe will take different views and yes i am talking to my counterparts in different locations. Malta we know about, they are keen to accept british tourists. Spain, because we have the balearics. We will see what happens. I would suspect different European Countries will come to different conclusions depending on their own domestic roll out of the Vaccination Programme. It is probably in both cases a question of patients probably a case in most cases. In terms of the safety of this nation in relation to covid, it really relies on people playing by the rules, possibly more than ever before. We were speaking to Garry Wilson from Easyjet Holidays who says since your announcement Last Night there has been a huge spike in. They will be lots more people going away and coming back and we all know the rules, you have to have all know the rules, you have to have a tessa 72 hours before you go away to somewhere like ib fat, for example, you have to have a test. You could contract the virus in the intervening time. You could be sitting next to someone on a plane. There is a lot could go wrong in practice. You must be aware of that. You are one of the things we are interested in is what happens is people travel back from the uk back to the uk. You have to take a back to the uk. You have to taKe Test before you leave whichever location is take another test on day two. A lot has happened to automate this process, so when you return you have to have first filled in a passage at Locator Form online, have to have first filled in a passage at locatorform online, and in that you must put in your Booking Reference numbers, you must have pre booked those tests. When you get to the border in the uk, behind the scenes for the most part three the e gates and border force, when they scan your passport they are reading a passage at Locator Form and see you have made those bookings and the whole thing is tied together. The system has become much more automated in checks at every stage to make sure that the things you need to do from the Country you are coming back from being followed. I want to get through to my things briefly. You personally, does this change anything . I dont know if you have any plans. I know the Stock Answer is i am going to holiday in the uk and im sticking to that. But are you effectively saying to people. Is the advice that you get out now. We have spoken many times, holiday in the uk, that is a good thing to do. If you really must, then go away. You, personally, are you giving that advice still . Has that music changed . I am saying to eole has that music changed . I am saying to people there has that music changed . I am saying to people there are has that music changed . I am saying to people there are green has that music changed . I am saying to people there are Green List to people there are Green List countries and you can go there on holiday. This is notjust holidays, people have a family and other reasons to travel and in many reasons to travel and in many reasons i desperate to reconnect. Sorry to interrupt, mr shapps. Would you rather they didnt go away . H0. You rather they didnt go away . No, that is not my you rather they didnt go away . My, that is not my message at all. I am Transport Secretary, i am happy whether people travel in the uk or abroad. We must be aware that if you travel abroad this year and there are complications because of this wouldnt be a factor but it is for individuals to maKe That decision. My individuals to maKe That decision. My own situation, we have not discussed holidays. Im working on other Transport Related Issues so we have not booked anyway. Yes and we have seen many different experimental projects to get stadiums reopened and get sporting and cultural events reopened and thatis and cultural events reopened and that is part of this experimental programme and as a Country we need to do those things, particularly where they are outdoors, we know they are safe and we have been tracking the results of that all the way through and so far that programme has been very successful. Stay with us, headlines coming up. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt. Our headlines today. Popular Holiday Destinations like ibiza, majorca and barbados are added to the uks Green List for travel but the government warns it could change at short notice. With cases rising in the uk, we ask how welcome british tourists will be. And theres frustration from the Travel Industry. They say the changes dont go far enough and more countries could have been included for vaccinated travellers. Any adult in england can get a vaccine without an appointment this weekend at walk in centres across the Country. And we meet strictly come dancings newjudge, Show Veteran of 17 years, anton du beke. Carrying the hopes of a nation. The Welsh Team settle into their new Amsterdam Base before taking on Denmark Tomorrow in the first match of the Euro 2020 knock out stage. And for some of you, up to a11i degrees Temperature Drop compared to yesterday, some rain around as well. Details on all of that coming up later on. Its friday the 25th ofjune. Our top story. Ibiza, mallorca, Malta And Madeira have been added to the governments Green List of destinations Uk Residents can visit with no requirement to quarantine on return from wednesday of next week. A dozen other islands were also added but Travel Industry leaders say the announcement is not enough to save them from another missed summer. We know that the Green List has expanded a bit to include as we have been hearing places like ibiza, majorca and barbados, which means that british travellers can go there and returned to england without having to self isolate for ten days although they will need a negative Covid Test and to take a Pcr Test after two days but they will not need to isolate. However with the exception of malta, all those countries on the Green List are on what the government calls a Watch List, which means they could tip back to amber, adding to the confusion which many people thinking about booking a flight might be feeling. Earlierthe about booking a flight might be feeling. Earlier the Transport Secretary was asked about that. What Grant Shapps said it was a short time ago is that effectively, no matter what you call it, all countries are on the Watch List, because they reserve the Watch List, because they reserve the right, the government, no matter where you are going to change the rules at any point at their discretion. But we know in a month or so the government will set out a policy in more detail which will explain how people who are double vaccinated will be able to return to england without having to return to england without having to self isolate if they have been to an Amber List Country. That is where the government wants us to get to by mid to late summer. We dont know exactly when, probably a months time. It wants to get away from the Amber List altogether, and allow people who have been Double Jabbed to travel and return with ease. However there is only part of the considerations that people are making because many destinations are not open to british travellers. The united states, several European Countries have restrictions in place, and at the moment there is real concern within the eu, led i think by Germanys Angler Merkel about the Delta Variant in the Angela Merkel about the Delta Variant in the uk, tightening restrictions on people going to the content. So people thinking of booking a flight will be concerned. Thank you very much. More than One Million appointments were made in just two days when over 18s became eligible last week. The Government Hope byjuly19th, all adults will have had theirfirstjab, a figure currently at 83 . Second jabs are also available at some centres this weekend. The Competition Watchdog has opened a formal probe into Amazon And Google over concerns that they have not been doing enough to combat fake reviews on their sites. Its grab a Jab Weekend in england as any adult can turn up to a drop in Vaccine Centre without an appointment. More than 60 of adults in the uk are now Double Jabbed but there are still groups in which take up is lower. The national medical director of nhs england, professor stephen powis, is at one of the Vaccine Centres, at arsenals Emirates Stadium. Professor stephen powis, thank you for your time this morning. How optimistic are you that this grab a Jab Weekend is going to significantly improve the take up rates or the rate at which we see the number of people vaccinated . Good morning, naga. As you say, iam here at the Emirates Stadium and there is a key balmy stretching around the corner of the stadium, people have been here since 6 30am there is a queue behind me stretching around the corner. Well, here in london for about reaching and targeting . Vii here in london for example, we know that Vaccination Rates have been a bit lower than the rest of the Country. So its really important that in areas such as this we go that in areas such as this we go that extra mile. Thats why we have centred liKe This, thats why here in london, local leaders are working with Community Leaders, faith leaders, we have Pop Ups in religious venues and football grounds, what we have learned is the easier we make it four people, the closer we have these tax centres to where they live, the more likely they are to get a jab the closer they are to get a jab the closer the Vaccine Centres are to where they live the more likely they are to get a jab. I they live the more likely they are to get a jab to get a ab. I know you say you have to get a jab. I know you say you have community to get a jab. If you look at some statistics, black people are the least likely to have received a vaccine among the over 50s, and it isntjust an ethnic disparity, there is economic disparity, there is economic disparity as well. Nearly 80 of those aged 50 to Sir Disparity as well. Nearly 80 of those aged 50 to 5a in the poorest areas have been given a vaccine in mid june, compared to 92 in the most affluent. The good news is that what we have found is, even in the over 60s, we are seeing people coming forward in their thousands each week to get the vaccine. Although we open up to those groups many months ago. It has taught us that we can get those final few people who want a vaccine, and if we get the Vaccine Centres close to them. The and if we get the Vaccine Centres close to them. And if we get the Vaccine Centres close to them. The background is that cases close to them. The background is that cases are close to them. The background is that cases are rising close to them. The background is that cases are rising and close to them. I dont know what data you have gathered, many people have had two vaccines, how many who are Double Jabbed are being hospitalised, or Reporting Illness after Contracting Covid . ~. , Reporting Illness after Contracting Covid . ~ Reporting Illness after Contracting Covid . , covid . Well, as you say, hospital numbers are covid . Well, as you say, hospital numbers are rising covid . Well, as you say, hospital numbers are rising but covid . Well, as you say, hospital numbers are rising but rising numbers are rising but rising modestly. And it is at a much slower rate than they did at the peak in january or last spring. That shows how effective the vaccine is. We are seeing fewer over 60s for example needing hospitalisation. Thats the group that has the full immunisation. That second dose is really important. That link between infection rates and hospitalisation is being severed. It is the case that some people with two jabs will still need hospital care, a very small percentage, but the message is the vaccine is highly effective. Roughly the percentage . {iii the vaccine is highly effective. Roughly the percentage . Of the Eo Le we roughly the percentage . Of the peeple we are roughly the percentage . Of the people we are seeing at the moment in hospitals, probably around 10 or so. But many of those have had recent second vaccines and what we know is it is a couple of weeks after the second vaccine that you get the full immunity. The vaccine is over 90 effective against severe disease, in other words, hospitalisation. So the getting the jab will prevent severe disease, protect your loved ones and help us all get back towards a much more normal life. Do you have a thought on the fact that, as we are seeing more and more people double vaccinated, more and more people with at least one vaccination, and hearing this frustration around people being pinged in their lives being changed and being forced to isolate for ten days, because of the Test And Trace, the way the Test And Trace system works, but they are also seeing people coming in from a green Country'>List Country not having to isolate or coming from an Country'>Analyst Country and they have not been able to take a test after five days, and be back out. If you are paying it, you are in for ten days and there is disruption in schools and for employers if you are pinged. I employers if you are pinged. I understand how frustrating it is. We are 16 months into this pandemic, and we have all had to live through restrictions over those months of various sorts. The Vaccine Programme really is the way out of this. It is the way that we will get enough immunity in the population that those restrictions can start to be relaxed. The message for Everybody Today is, get yourjab, it will help us be all free. So actually having somebody in their life thats consistent, thats going to be there to support them, thats reliable, and that will give them space to speak is really important for those children. Its a much milder start to the day than we saw this time yesterday. Temperatures are in the Mid Teens in celsius. Its still feeling rather muggy and humid, too, and there will be more showery outbreaks of rain as we head through the morning. More from me in half an Hour Plenty more on our website. Ben has been listening to what the industry has been saying and also about scott i think political correspondence and it is complicated and it is. Yes and some relief for those who complicated and it is. Yes and some relief for those who might complicated and it is. Yes and some relief for those who might be relief for those who might be thinking about going away and being able to book. At the industry say it doesnt go far enough, more countries should be on the list because of the vaccine right. They are pretty angry. They are hoping more International Travel could be allowed. As we know, each Country is categorised on a traffic light system. Green countries can be visited without the need to self isolate on your Return But Youll still need tests. If you have go to amber and red countries even though its not advised youll have to isolate for ten days when you get back. The list is reviewed every three weeks, based on Vaccine And Infection levels. So whats changed in the latest update . Well, these are the countries that have now been added to the Green List, which comes into effect on wednesday. It includes Holiday Hotspots like majorca and ibiza as well as malta. Despite relief for business owners in those countries, other industry leaders have shared their disappointment with the changes. I spoKe To Garry Wilson the Chief Executive of Easyjet Holidays earlier. There has been an absolute lack of dialogue there has been an absolute lack of dialogue between the government and the industry. The Double Jab to being the industry. The Double Jab to being able to travel to the countries and come back without quarantine is a very welcome message but this quarantine is a very welcome message but this has quarantine is a very welcome message but this has been talked about for over a but this has been talked about for over a week now and i dont see why the Government Need to be delaying so much the Government Need to be delaying so much on the Government Need to be delaying so much on this. Your is opening up, allowing so much on this. Your is opening up, allowing restriction free travel amongst its countries. The uk is falling amongst its countries. The uk is falling behind and we need to get back on falling behind and we need to get back on track and get your open. But whilst some have gone green remember theyre also on the so called Green Watchlist which means they could turn amber at short notice, even while youre already away. The amber and Red Lists still cover the majority of the world including most of the main Holiday Hotspots. The Travel Industry is angry. It says the Government Hasnt gone far enough and is being far too cautious in its approach. The boss of ba has warned thatjobs are at stake if the industry misses another summer. And one thing to watch the government has said those whove had two jabs will be allowed to travel to Amber List countries later in the summer, without having to quarantine. They have not yet given a date for that. So could demand for those green destinations mean your holiday is about to get more expensive . Lets get speak now to emma coulthurst from the Holiday Price Comparison site travelsupermarket. Good morning. Some people can finally book a holiday this summer but not without its complications. Our reporter Luxmy Gopal can tell us more shes at the royal docks in east london. Somewhere were already people are enjoying the water. Good morning. Good morning. It might not be the most summery day but every day is a good day for a dip for Open Water swimmers. With that increase in popularity and more of us heading to the coast within the uk, and with nightlife assuming there is a concern they could be an increase in the number of people drowning. I am joined by steve dimity from the rnli, what are you expecting . Goad rnli, what are you expecting . Good morninr. Rnli, what are you expecting . Good morning we rnli, what are you expecting . More lifesaving advice in a moment but first a I Advice in a moment but first a reminder that behind every statistic is a Grieving Family and i spoKe To the parents of an 18 year old who drowned. Here is their story. Your world just falls apart. Vicki and Ians Son tom had just started at the university of worcester. Be in touch with your mum send her a whasapp or a message. She worries like any other mother would just stay in touch with your mum and well see you at the weekend. Shook his hand. I didnt see him again. When tom was reported missing, police told his parents to prepare for the worst. Nine days later, the Phone Call they dreaded. We were actually driving back from worcester. The police called and said, we need you to pull over and taKe This call. And ian and i looked at Each Other and we. We knew. His body was found in the river severn, where hed slipped down an embankment. At the inquest, the Coroner Sort of said that, you know, there was a noise in the background, and whether hed gone down to the river to see if somebody was in danger themselves, and he then went to help them out and obviously tragically lost his own life. Well never know. He was a great swimmer, but not when youve had a few beers and its freezing cold its not. Those two dont go together. We Cant Change whats happened. But what we can do is we can tell our story to try and stop this happening to another family. More than 350 people die from accidental drowning in the uk each year. The rnli says half are connected to the night time economy, and theyre offering life saving training for Bar Staff and bouncers from riverside venues, like here in newcastle. Were preparing ourselves. For what could be the busiest summer, with people stayingj in the uk, not going abroad you know, with the staycation. Were really encouraging people to, you know, i be responsible around water. Are you all right at i swimming, you guys . If someones in the water, i you want to shout at them, like, come over here, so they know i where theyre going and they come to you and theyre safe. Weve been learning to, like, help people breathe and weve been learning to hang onto life buoys. One and two and three. Learning the basics is childs play, but could be the difference between life and death. Well never, ever come to terms with it. And the tom shaped hole in our lives is. Will never get any smaller. Theyre campaigning in toms memory, hoping to protect others from a fate as tragic and avoidable. That is the key point. It is entirely preventable.
