Its been one of The Worlds Covid 19 success stories, recording less than A Thousand deaths. Compare that to almost Four Million worldwide. The country shut its international borders in march last Year And Theyve stayed shut with australians banned from leaving except for exceptional circumstances. There are also limits on the number of australian residents who can return from overseas. Thats driven up the cost of airfares and left tens of thousands of australians unable to get back. Those who have made it back are taken into mandatory Hotel Quarantine for 1h days. With me is our reporter Courtney Bembridge who has been following This story since the start of the pandemic. Thank you very much for coming in and chatting. Now while these rules have undoubtedly saved lives, many lives, they have had some devastating consequences, havent they . I spoke earlier This morning to a western australian man named james. He was living in belgium with his girlfriend, she is bulges that make belgian. And he got the call from his family to say he needed to get home asap because his mother was not well. He tried to get onto a flight that day, there were none from belgium. He tried to go through amsterdam, through germany, he was unable to get a flight back to wa, To Perth where his mother was and so he decided to fly to melbourne, on the other side of the country and apply foran the other side of the country and apply for an exemption on exceptional circumstances. He got to melbourne in the West Australian Government denied his request for access. The Wa Premier said that that was the risk of living overseas, that you may not be able to return for something like This. What This meant forjames is that he was alone in a Hotel Room when he found out that his mother had 12 hours to live and he had to make a last goodbye to her via Video Call and lets listen to him describing that moment. The Internet Wi Fi was cutting out and the Internet Wi Fi was cutting out and i the Internet Wi Fi was cutting out and i got her last moments on a out and i got her last moments on a Video Out and i got her last moments on a Video Call and it was the most on a Video Call and it was the most disturbing and distressing thing most disturbing and distressing thing i most disturbing and distressing thing i have ever been through, knowing thing i have ever been through, knowing that i came back and did my knowing that i came back and did my hardest to get there and if i did my hardest to get there and if i were did my hardest to get there and if i were able to have jumped on a if i were able to have jumped on a domestic flight that Saturday Morning i would have been Saturday Morning i would have been able to spend, you know, some been able to spend, you know, some time been able to spend, you know, some time with my mom. And, you know, it is a story that is repeated and has been repeated across australia and across The World, people being apart. Do we know how long the borders in australia are likely to stay closed . ~ ,. ,. , closed . The australian government closed . The australian government has closed . The australian government has said l closed . The australian i government has said that closed . The australian government has said that they will stay closed until at least the middle of next year, despite plans to have 26 Million of the L Population of australia fully vaccinated by the end of This year. It is worth noting the polling shows the majority of the public support these measures, that people are happy to have This and they are relying on Hotel Quarantine which has been breached time and time again but the public does support these measures. There have been a few legal challenges and all four have failed on the basis that the Health Minister should have extra powers to use the Bio Security Act to keep australia safe. But we know the Prime Minister of australia, having just visited the uk for the G7 Summit is quarantining at his home at the official residence and james, who i spoke to, said there is a two Tier System in place where politicians and celebrities live under one set of rules and it is a different Situation for regular people. That is nowhere near where they needed to be and with the current rate of the pace of vaccinations, that is about 671,000 doses a week so if they keep up This rate they are unlikely to reach the target to vaccinate all adults untiljune next year. So certainly things are going at a very, very slow rate and in the meantime having adopted a zero covert approach they do need to keep the Hotel Quarantine. There have been called time and time again for Purpose Built Facilities these take time and it is a race now to try and get the country vaccinated because there has been no covid, there is no Herd Immunity there is no infection, previous infection may give people antibodies. It is not known how many contain the remains of children. This discovery comes weeks after the remains of 215 children were found at another site, another form of Residential School in british columbia. Indigenous leaders say it is likely many more unmarked graves will be discovered. Almost 800 unmarked graves, undiscovered for decades until Ground Penetrating Radar unearthed the secrets of the burial grounds. In 1960 there may have been marks on these graves. The Catholic Church representatives removed these headstones and today, they are unmarked graves. The discovery was made near the marieval indian Residential School. It was built in 1889 by the Catholic Church and is one of more than 130 compulsory Boarding Schools in canada where children were taken after being separated from their parents as part of a policy of forced integration. Canadas past policies were thrown into the spotlight in may after The Discovery of 215 childrens remains at the site of a former Residential School in kamloops. It is estimated that 6,000 children died while attending these schools, largely because of the squalid Health Conditions inside. There are also reports of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of school authorities. In a statement, prime Minister Justin trudeau said the schools were funded by the canadian government and in 2008, it apologised for the system. But the roman Catholic Church was responsible for the operations up to 70 of these schools and indigenous groups want a formal apology from the pope. This was a crime against humanity, an assault on our first nation people. We are proud people. We are very proud people. The only crime we ever committed as children was being born indigenous. Pope francis said earlier This month that he was pained by The Discovery At Kamloops but stopped short of a formal apology. Courtney bembridge, Bbc News. Scientists in israel say theyve discovered a previously unknown form of early human after studying fragments of a fossilised skull and jawbone. They were found at an Archaeological Site near tel aviv. Its thought they could explain genetic links between modern humans and neanderthals. The bbc s Tim Allman has the story. Isnt it amazing how something so small can be so significant . A Skull Fragment is analysed by scientists in tel aviv, but This is no ordinary skull argument. Fragment. Along with part of the jawbone, it was unearthed at nesher ramla, an Archaeological Site once used by a cement plant, and they may well answer the questions about the development of human life on earth. Nesher Ramla Findings are the missing piece in the puzzle that can help us explain open questions in Human Evolutionary History and can give us an indication of the origin, the Source Population of neanderthals that lived later in europe. It is believed neanderthals, the cousins of modern humans, died out around 40,000 years ago. But these fragments are from a species much older than that and suggest the neanderthal story may be much more different to what we previously imagined. Now we can say that its probably that they originate in the levant, in our region, rather than in europe, as many researchers thought until now. Nesher ramla may have lived alongside and even mated with Homo Sapiens for more than 100,000 years. These arent just fragments of bone, they are pieces of an evolutionary jigsaw. Go and put the kettle on hello there. North East Englands had the highest temperatures on thursday. One or two spots getting close to 26 degrees with some good spells of sunshine. But i dont think friday will offer a Repeat Performance because the weather has been changing. Weve seen Rain Pushing in from the North West in association with a band of cloud that you can see here on our earlier satellite image. This is a frontal system and as that drops its way south eastwards through friday, behind it, we pick up a northerly wind quite a brisk northerly wind in places and that will be feeding Cooler Air down across most parts of the uk. So a Cooler Day on friday, quite a messy weather day, really, but across england and wales many spots will start off cloudy with outbreaks of rain. Further south, it should dry up and brighten up with some sunshine and just the odd hefty shower into the afternoon. But for northern England And North wales, it is likely to stay grey and wet all day long. Northern ireland and Western Scotland should see a bit of sunshine, Eastern Scotland plagued by cloud and patchy rain. A brisk wind here keeping temperatures down to just 12 degrees in aberdeen, similar temperature there in newcastle, maybe 20 down towards the south where we could see the Odd Thunderstorm Breaking out through friday evening. And then into the early hours of saturday, a lot of cloud left behind, some splashes of rain here and there. Minimum temperatures between 7 and 13 degrees. Now, as we head into the weekend, it is a story of split fortunes. High pressure trying to build in towards the North And West of the uk. Low Pressure Spinning Close to the south. The detail will change between now and then but closest to that area of low pressure in the south, theres the chance for the Odd Shower to break out on saturday across southern england, parts of wales. Further north, although well have quite a lot of cloud, it will be increasingly drying out through the day. Temperatures between 1a and 20 degrees. And then as we get on into sunday, This area of low pressure will become slow moving across the near continent and is likely to throw bands of Rain Up in our direction from time to time. So southern parts of england, wales, maybe the midlands could see some rain at times on sunday. But further north, we see more in the way of dry weather and some spells of sunshine. And temperatures bouncing back 21 degrees in glasgow, a similar value there in london. Thats all from me for now.
