Is the beginning of the end, of the conservatives southern Blue Wall. And new data shows a single dose of the Pfizer Or Astrazeneca vaccine cuts the risk of hospitalisation by around 75 . Hello, and if youvejustjoined us, a warm welcome to bbc news. The countdown is on to one of the oldest rivalries in football. England and scotland face Each Other in the euros tonight. Thousands of Scotland Fans are in london for the game at wembley, which has huge implications for both nations hopes in the competition. Its the first time the mens teams will meet in a major tournament for a quarter of a century. England will qualify for the Knockout Stage with a win, while scotland need a victory to keep their hopes alive. In a moment, well hear from our correspondents in london and glasgow, but first this report from jane dougall. Scotland fans have descended On London for a much anticipated match against the auld enemy. Were looking forward to it. Were going to beat england 2 0. I say 2 1, well go for that, 2 1. I say 2 1, we will go for that, 2 1. Well take it. We are very generous, well give you one. Were here for a Stag Do and a bit of football as well. Have you got tickets for the game . No tickets, but we will be in a pub. The last time these two countries met in a major tournament was euro 96. It finished in a win for england, sealed with this memorable Paul Gascoigne goal. Heres gascoigne. 0h, brillant oh, yes some will look back fondly on the skill and perhaps the infamous gazza celebrations. Others, not so much. My foot slips, my right foot slips. Not to the extent that its going to make a difference to what gazza did. Its taken englands greatest ever footballer to do that to me. Theres no shame in what happened to me with the Goal And Everything else. People actually seem to think that it keeps me awake at night, this goal. You can imagine last week, the week before, the amount of stick and the amount of social media, every platform you can imagine, its there and im getting it. This was just the start of English Celebrations last evening after that amazing match at wembley. Typical gazza, he had. The Water Bottle neatly placed behind the goal, ready to go for the celebrations. So he couldnt have. Planned it any better. 25 years later, the stage is set for a repeat of the oldest international fixture in the world. England already have a win under their belts in this tournament, but Scotland Go into the match following a loss. But the squad is happy to be underdogs and they already have a feel for playing in england. Their Training Base is in the quiet town of darlington, where theyve created something of a Scottish Embassy and developed a Siege Mentality ahead of this match. Obviously there has to be belief, there has to be a Confidence Level that you can go to any team and play well against them, whether thats england at wembley or a different nation in a different country. You always have to have that Self Belief and that sort of level of arrogance where we can play and we are more than suited to be on this stage, as weve proven with the Journey Weve had to get here. Confidence in the England Camp is in abundance after scoring in their victory over croatia. Then plays it into sterling that will do nicely they will consider themselves favourites, but scotland is a potential Banana Skin and the significance of this Fixture Isnt lost on the captain. We know what it means as players to represent england and when you are playing a Home Nation like scotland, we know what that entails with the fans. It is about us performing on the pitch and tactically getting it right are making sure that we exploit whatever weaknesses they have on the day. There have been many battles between these two countries. Some might argue none as bitter as those on the pitch. Jane dougall reporting. Of the thousands of Scotland Fans who have made thejourney to london for the game, the vast Majority Havent got tickets but have found a way to at least enjoy the build up. Come down to london, great atmosphere, everybody seems to be getting on great. Nothing to complain. Have you got tickets for the game . No, weve come down, no tickets for the game, but were going to pubs all day. Its just about the atmosphere and just soaking up the scottish atmosphere and having a great time. English fans, the pubs, the restaurants, everywhere that ive been, absolutely fantastic. Is there a game on today . That was the scene among the fans there in london. Our Correspondentjames Shaw is in glasgow with some of the Scotland Fans. I say some, james half A Hundred Scotland Fans with you there what is the atmosphere like . We are a couple hours ahead of the game, so i guess we should not inspect them much euphoria this early stuff you look that is right. This fans zone, it is not yet half full, it is starting to build up, the atmosphere started to grow. Just a couple of minutes ago, they were singing the course of a song they like, and i think it really sums up how Scotland Fans, ora think it really sums up how Scotland Fans, or a lot of fans, feel about this game. They know they are not the favourites to win, they know that they are the underdogs, but they did not win there first game, but in a lot of ways that does not matter to people are just here to enjoy the atmosphere to enjoy the fact that Yella Mescaline are again playing at the top international level at scotland are playing again. Level at scotland are playing aaain. Level at scotland are playing a. Ain. , level at scotland are playing aaain. ,. , again. One fan said to me, if get a coal, that again. One fan said to me, if get a goal, that would again. One fan said to me, if get a goal, that would be again. One fan said to me, if get a goal, that would be marvellous,. Again. One fan said to me, if get a l goal, that would be marvellous, and would mean fans could celebrate, they would have that they really enjoy. And if that happens, you would expect this place, which is going to be packed into hours, you would to explode. Nicola sturgeon the first minister actually warned people to exercise a bit of caution if or when, as she put it, scotland scored a goal. But the idea of people thinking about covid when Scotland Oracle against the old enemy, there will be pretty ecstatic seems if scotland were to enact or even just get a goal. Even just get a goal. James shaw there in glasgow, even just get a goal. James shaw there in glasgow, i even just get a goal. James shaw there in glasgow, i know even just get a goal. James shaw there in glasgow, i know we even just get a goal. James shaw there in glasgow, i know we will| even just get a goal. James shaw. There in glasgow, i know we will be checking in with you. You can probably hear the England Fans and Scotland Fans who are arriving here in full force because, as we know, covid being what it has been and the impact he did that on sport up and down the country, for many of these fans this is probably the first match they will of seen live for a long time. Many more fans, well into theirfans, a long time. Many more fans, well into their fans, arriving a long time. Many more fans, well into theirfans, arriving in a long time. Many more fans, well into their fans, arriving in the city. Do we watching in pubs and bars across the capital, and it really does make very, very special because matches between the mens teams, scotland and england, happens so infrequently, dont they . We have the Home Nations championship, that was stopped in the 80s, but since 1985 it is england who have come out on top on scotland, only once have they lost since then. So england will go into this feeling confident, as we know, with the abundance of Attack And Quality they have in their side. They had that great start to the sheer s tournament with that victory over Caray Ship which on paper was the hardest Group Game they were going to play, Raheem Sterling of course scoring his first goal at a major tournament, and southgate seems to have blended discrete of experienced players and the younger exciting players who have come through, but is not to say that Scotland Wont be able to achieve what they want today, which is a Win Cub which would certainly give them some to play for going to the final Group Game were they Group Game. Were they to lose, it does not necessarily mean they are out of the tournament, it would just make it very difficult for them to progress. Steve clarke will be stressing the positive. He know they did not get the result they wanted and that the fee to the Czech Republic in their first Group Game, but there were certainly elements of the performance that were there and he will want to build on that. And good news as well for scotland that they have their influential defender Kieran Tierney back in the side, but as we know, with matches between these two crowd nations, in many ways, form does go out the window. It is like a Derby Match and when you see england and scotland playing in a major Mens Tournament, as they are for the first time in 25 years, it is a very special occasion for british sport and with so much passion at play, so much pride at stake as well, here in wembley tonight, i think picking a winner, its very hard to call. Its tonight, i think picking a winner, its very hard to call. Its very hard to call. Its fair to sa the its very hard to call. Its fair to say the england its very hard to call. Its fair to say the England Fans its very hard to call. Its fair to say the England Fans are its very hard to call. Its fair to say the England Fans are outnumbered the Scotland Fans in terms of number of tickets inside the stadium, but you would be unwise to count out the underdogs in any match of this kind, when there is so much history and with them both being Home Nations . I with them both being Home Nations . I think so. As i say, you have to look at the way that england are playing at the way that england are playing at the way that england are playing at the moment. Yes, they have such a great selection of Quality And Talent in the squad, but i think that was the thing that scotland felt coming into this, they had qualified for major Mens Tournament in 23 years, but there was a real belief they had the makings of a great side, which they do. When you look about some of the players who have got to give also steve clarke. He has coached at Club Level and Champions League side, he has also been involved in use matches as well for you look at scott mctominay, the Manchester United midfielder. He has played in a final, Andy Robertson has won a champions that with his clubside liverpool. There are players that have got a big Week Experience and that is something the Scotland Fans felt, they were not just here to make up the numbers. There was genuine believe they could get out of the Group Stage. That was their aim and get out of the Group Stage. That was theiraim and that get out of the Group Stage. That was their aim and that was the disappointing thing about that the fee to the Czech Republic in their opening Group Game. It was such a disappointment, having waited so long to arrive on the biggest age of all, and i think they will want to demonstrate, steve clarke, his players will want to demonstrate, that i was a one off and they want to go out and lay down a real marker against england. I think it will probably be a cagey first half, it is fair to say, because they wont want to lose. But if scotland gets a point it gives them something to play for going to that final Group Stage game against croatia, which will be a very home support. John. Will be a very home support. John, Thank Ou will be a very home support. John, thank you very will be a very home support. John, thank you very much. Well, for more on this, we can speak to the Sports Writer for the daily telegraph, jim white. You have the detachment of being in oxford, a long way from wembley, although you miss it, really full to what is your sense of these two teams . I can hear it it is coming through the chill turns, the through the chill turns, the atmosphere, of aldwych oxford. My senseis atmosphere, of aldwych oxford. My sense is that, as youve indicated Scotla Nd Scotland are very much underdogs. Yes, they have quality players but the have the kind of weaknesses england simply do not have the particular in Goalkeeper And Centre backs, and i suspect england will ultimately come out on top of a shameful stop i want scotland to progress, and in the really do need a point from this to give them a chance. ~. ,. , a point from this to give them a chance. ~. , , a point from this to give them a chance. ~. , ~. , chance. It seems to be very good humoured at the moment, there is a good nature between the teams. After all they have not played against Each Other. Individual players have come about internationally. You individual players have come about internationally. Internationally. You are right. They have not got internationally. You are right. They have not got that internationally. You are right. And i am not sure what the antagonism is between the two sides, but my suspicion is that the Scotland T Mobile since this is very much their cup final full so they will have the Adrenaline Rush at the start of the game, which if they can control it, could be real advantage, but if they cannot, it could actually be to their detriment. We cannot, it could actually be to their detriment. Cannot, it could actually be to their detriment. We have had the trifecta for their detriment. We have had the trifecta for the their detriment. We have had the trifecta for the home their detriment. We have had the trifecta for the Home Nations their detriment. We have had the trifecta for the Home Nations and | trifecta for the Home Nations and just this first day, a win, draw and a lose, and i know scotland would not want to lose, so in some ways this is a more match for scotland, as well as for the euro reasons. Is thatis as well as for the euro reasons. Is that is englands biggest danger, complacency . That is englands biggest danger, complacency . There is a sense of Complexity Complacency . There is a sense of complexity. Gareth complacency . There is a sense of complexity. Gareth Southgate Complacency . There is a sense of| complexity. Gareth southgate will fight that. The pictures of nicola sturgeon, she made sure there was a photographer watching her and she watched the Czech Republic, and she posted a lot of pictures of herself watching that, so im going be interested in seeing how she reacts to the england game. I hope theres a bit more cheerfor this to the england game. I hope theres a bit more cheer for this time. Thank you very much for that. I hope we talk to you again soon. Thanks very much. Jim white there. And well have more on all the build up In Sportsday at 6. 30pm. In other news, the Liberal Democrats are celebrating a stunning by election victory, after winning a seat that has been conservative for almost half a century. Sarah green won Chesham And Amersham in Buckinghamshire Byjust over 8,000 votes, overturning a tory majority, of 16,000. The lib dem leader, sir ed davey, says the conservatives have ignored local voters, and their Blue Wall of southern seats is now crumbling. Our political correspondent Iain Watson reports from chesham. The liberal Democrat Party is duly elected. The lib dems say theyve created a political shock wave. Their candidate, sarah green, defeated the Conservatives Peter Fleet by a wide margin, gaining more than half the votes cast. Thank you. Know what happens when a really powerful, Strong Orange Force goes against a Blue Wall . The Liberal Democrats are claiming they can demolish conservative majorities in the same way as Borisjohnsons Party tore through Labour Strongholds in the north of england at the last election. What was really noticeable at the beginning of this campaign was when we knocked on doors in Chesham And Amersham, people kept saying to us, youre the first politicians to knock on our doors and ask our opinions since ive lived here, and ive lived here 40 years or 30 years or 20 years. People in this area have been taken for granted by the conservatives, and thats why theyve turned to the Liberal Democrats in such huge, huge numbers. The conservatives didnt expect to lose here. The Liberal Democrats grabbed a brick from the Blue Wall by relentlessly campaigning on local issues. Their candidate opposed to a high speed rail line, hs2. Well, nationally, the party supports it. And they also say that proposed changes to the Planning System played very badly with the governments traditional voters. And voters in amersham were no longer displaying tribal loyalties. Very happy, yeah. Im very happy. Lets see what gets done now, then. I couldnt possibly vote for the tories given the brexit fiasco. The Prime Minister praised the conservative candidate in Chesham And Amersham and remained defiant in the face of defeat. We are a great one Nation Party and we will continue with our mission to unite and level up, because that is the best way to deliverjobs, prosperity across the whole country. Only last month, the conservatives took hartlepool from labour, and some conservative mps are worried that all the talk of spending more on northern English Seats could turn some traditional voters off in the south. In remain voting, middle class seats in the south of england, the Conservation Coalition has been weakened to some degree in the wake of brexit, and the Liberal Democrats, frankly, are the party that, in many instances, are best placed to profit from that. And thats what theyve managed to do in Chesham And Amersham. In Chesham And Amersham, the Liberal Democrats but its still not clear if this is a crisis. Have stormed to victory. But its still not clear if this is a crisis for the conservatives which will soon pass or, as the lib dems claim, theres now a change in the political climate. Iain watson reporting. Im joined now by stephen hammond, conservative mp for wimbledon and a former government minister. Good evening to you. You sit on one of those conservative seeds for the majority is not what it once was. Howd you look on this result . It was a bad result, but ethic i take, i did visited. I take full lessons. One is there was an awful lot of local issues which youve identified, particularly planning, and hs2. There was certainly some distrust of the government. The message i would take, one, the government says it wants to be one nation, and it needs to prove that, so if Leveling Up is good and one part of the country, it is good for the whole Country Club known my own constituency and the south and i think that message needs to come more strongly for something also need to prove that we are absolutely not guilty of the charge of taking all parts of the country which are traditionally very conservative for granted cub so we need to make sure we listening to their concerns, we are responding with policies, and where we have national policies insuring the regional implementation of them fits regional needs. And finally i would say the Liberal Democrats have said every time they win a by election that the world has changed and it usually has not come in an a weeks time, if the conservatives when batley and spen, you have someone like me on saying, the political has not changed, the conservative are storming to a wood victory. Conservative are storming to a wood victo. , ,. , , victory. Leveling up presumably there is a bit victory. Leveling up presumably there is a bit of victory. Leveling up presumably there is a bit of a problem , people in other parts of the country think it is a zero sum game. If he is gaining, i am losing. How do you overcome that perception . I think there are number of things you need to do with the policy, but you need to do with the policy, but you need to understand that, and you must prove it to be wrong, but there also is of things like opportunity areas, with education policy, that we can do across the whole country, we can do across the whole country, we also need to recognise that in parts of the Country That our thought is traditionally as well to do, like along the south coast, there are many towns that actually need exactly the same opportunities and a very similar to some of the problems in the north of england. Isaiah said a moment ago, ticket is really key that we look a policy called Leveling Up and we look at the granular digital of that, we dontjust apply it to one area of the country. That, we dontjust apply it to one area of the country. History never re Eats Area of the country. History never repeats itself area of the country. Lesson but thats the point i am saying, which is that i think if we learn those lessons now, the Popularity And Belief conservatives have held in the polls recently will hold through to the next General Election full to but it is as i say about one making sure we are empathetic and listening to the whole Country Notjust to parts of it, that we actually have policies and we deliver on those policies and are proving we are delivering on them and implement in them, and i think therefore having the personal to do that in government, driving forward some of the Leveling Up, some of the investment in new technology, in the world that is going to be, giving the people the skills for the 21st Century Cub we can be proving we are doing that cub we need to start proving were doing that from now, and that will make sure to Thank Wimbledon vote again heavily conservative in the next General Election. Protection rises to more than 90 after two jabs. The Office For National Statistics estimates that infections in the uk have risen by about 10 in the past week, from 110,000 to 119,000. The more infectious Delta Variant accounts for almost all of the cases, says public health england. And this afternoon, the government released the latest coronavirus figures for the uk. The data shows that a further 11 people have died within 28 days of Testing Positive for Covid 19 and another 10,476 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the uk. The total number of deaths now stands at 127,956. Well, we can speak now to peter openshaw, Whos Professor of Experimental Medicine at imperial college. Professor openshaw, this is following the pattern that a lot of people thought it would follow, the issueis people thought it would follow, the issue is still this question of translating infection into serious illness and potential hospitalisation. And that is a very sad thing for those affected by it, friends, family and the people directly involved. The question is, though, whether we need to be worried the way we were a few month ago, for the capacity, for the system to cope with that without either being overwhelmed or doing so much damage to the other with the Health Service does . I enjoy the idea of doing them all in one go. I know lots of people go out and back a few here and there, and that seems fun, but i thought, it seems quite fun to do it all in one go, that would be a real challenge, and that would be a real challenge, and thatjust inspired me to start making a route and looking at the route that Steve Made and see if i can make any improvements in working out a schedule of what sort of time i could do it in, and i kept coming up i could do it in, and i kept coming up with six days so that is what is going to aim for stop what were some pictures now and as ever, whoever knows that part of the country, it is quite breathtaking, looking at the scenery around you. Laughter eat, and a good nights sleep, i eat, and a good nights sleep, i hope. Sabrina verjee, think you very much. Many congratulations. A wonderful achievement, and hopefully a great nights sleep. Sabrina verjee there. Time for a look at the weather. Good evening. Its been a day of contrast, plenty of fine Summer Sunshine in northern and western areas, a Months Worth of Rain Falling across central eastern areas. Now, that rain is still with us, clearly a lot of spray and standing water on the faster routes, but its pulling away. Any thundery rain moves off into the North Sea overnight. So a far more comfortable night for sleeping in southern and eastern areas as we lose the humidity, a fairly cool Night North and west once again as well. If theres any mistiness in the morning, that will clear away, and it does look like a drier day for many parts of england. Perhaps a few more showers, though, breaking out across scotland, one or two heavy ones across southern counties into the afternoon. There could be the Odd One popping up elsewhere. Strong sunshine returns, very high levels of pollen. It feels warmer in the South And East without that rain
