Trump organization expecting to be hit with criminal charges as soon as next week and his team is lashing out. New reaction as Derek Chauvin is sentenced to 22. 5 years for the death of george floyd. Floyds family is saying its not enough, but it wont be long before hes back in court. This right here, this 22year sentence they gave to him today, that hurts me to death. And have aliens visited earth . Well, its complicated. The longawaited ufo report and what the findings could mean to our National Security as we say good morning, everybody, to saturday, june 26th. Im kendis gibson. And im lindsey reiser. Sometimes i feel a little alien. You do. Im not sure it was reassuring. Look. We knew we werent going to get a ton of answers because so much of the report is classified. Thats true, but we got a lot of questions out of this, which is a little freaky. Theres in the report a Catchall Bucket for everything we cant identify. Were going to put it in the we dont know category. We have a team of analysts following that later this morning. We begin with surfside, florida near miami beach. Kerry sanders is live. Good morning to you. Theres a report coming out of the New York Times saying an engineer actually warned in 2018 of major structural damage at this compound right there . Florida. With all of that said, youre there some 48 hours since this horror rained down on that building. Whats the latest on the situation there . Reporter kendis, i read that report well into the morning. The New York Times not the only one with access to it. The 2018 report was released by the city late into the evening, and the reason they did it, they never had a copy of it. This was a report provided by a Consulting Company to the actual Condo Association, and they had the information or at least there were members of the Condo Association who had access to the information. Lets take a look at some of the pictures here because perhaps the pictures begin to show the disrepair of this condo building built 40 years ago. You can see the concrete columns down into the garage that have cracking and spacing. According to the report, it says the companys review of the Parking Garage revealed signs of distress and fatigue. Abundant cracking and sprawling was observed between the concretes, beams, and walls which included instances with exposed deteriorating rebar. Rebar is the metal that goes inside the concrete. Thats the steel. Thats really what ultimately holds a building together. So, again, a 2018 report. Theres no reason to conclude at this early stage that this is the reason that the building collapsed. We need to warn you about that. But nonetheless, what youre hearing from officials looking at the situation and now gaining first access to this is was there a problem with the Information Flow from the Engineering Consultants to the Condo Association and perhaps from the Condo Association to local governments. This is what one State Senator had to say. Its all of our faults if weve been neglecting proper inspections, as far as Building Codes and recertification process doesnt include subsurface and all that. Its all of our faults from the city all the way up. Reporter so a lot of eyes, kendis and lindsey, on this report. Theyre looking for clues. Its extensive. I did a lot of reading. Its perhaps suggestive, but, again, important to note that that report from 2018, which may have been a warning, certainly did not say if these repairs were not made, a building would collapse. Guys . Certainly that report was pretty startling you read late into the night, kerry. I know youre just getting to the scene this morning. Its only 6 00 a. M. What do we know about the efforts . Is the latest still these 159 people unaccounted for . Yes. 159 people still unaccounted for. Four dead. They have identified now the first of the dead as stacy weng. She was the mother of that young boy who was pulled out of the rubble, you may remember n the early moments of this disaster. The firefighters were at least able to pull one person to safety. The efforts right now to continue to find people that may be trapped is still ongoing. This is still a search and rescue. No one should deem this as a recovery. I smell the smoke. There have been multiple fires inside the debris field has caused delays and problems. Now with heavy equipment from the top, theyre pulling out some of the debris. The teams are working in shifts. They brought in reinforcements from other cities to help. So there are enough people on site, but were now three days into this, and three days into this, if somebody had been alive, they may be literally just hanging on by hours now. Guys . And theyre facing so many things, the fires that took place, the rain that has been relentless there . South florida throughout the last couple of days. Thats just beyond the structural damage itself. Kerry, i had a friend arrive there on scene last night and said the scene is surreal. The scale is immense. Reporter were talking about a 12story building and the portion that faces the Atlantic Ocean came down. On the back t deck, the Swimming Pool area, even though we have shown images, people have seen it, people have seen helicopter shots, drone shots, shots from the beach, from across the street looking back, even with all of that, its still very hard to process that were in the united states, a building has collapsed. People were if there at 1 30 in the morning, most of them asleep, and at this point, authorities have told us only four bodies have been removed. As we noted from lindsey, 159 still unaccounted for. Were going to leave it there for right now. Well check back shortly. Kerry sanders joining us from surfside, florida. Kerry, thank you. We could be days away from a monumental announcement concerning Donald Trumps company. The Manhattan District Attorneys Office is considering criminal charges against the organization and its chief Financial Officers Allen Weisselberg as soon as next week. Theyre looking into whether tax s were paid on perks. Joining us right now is barbara weiss, a former executive with the Trump Organization. Good morning to you. You worked for the Trump Organization for well over a decade. When you first heard this news, what did you think . Well, i thought it was about time. Its interesting when you say theyre going after the Trump Organization. I never really understood what that was. When i was there, we all had loose titles. Now going after the Trump Organization for say, i understand, means going after Allen Weisselberg. Im just wondering if theres a way to go after trump himself at this point. We do know this is one of the multiple investigations hes facing. But lets dive into this and what theyre looking at. Theyre looking at extrash gant perks. For example, tau physician for weisselbergs grandkids and whether they were recorded in the ledgers or taxes were paid on any of them. Were you aware of these benefits dur anything of your time there . Not to this degree. I know that trump liked to give things away, especially things that didnt cost him, in order to engender almighty or some other favor. He did that a lot. The degree to which he did it, im not sure, but it was not like giving away 10 million apartments of whatever it was that he was accused of doing. A contributor was on our air last night, a contributor to msnbc. Its clear that Allen Weisselberg right now is not cooperating. Based on your interaction with him, do you have any reason why he isnt . You know, i was surprised initially that he wasnt cooperating. But then it occurred to me, trump is a very powerful man and allen was always in awe of him and adored him, worshipped him to a degree. So now what is trump doing to be silent . It has to be something thats scaring allen. Either theres a promise of a quid pro quo, which wont get him out of jail, and thats something that you would say, i dont know that he would take that. But maybe hes being threatened one way or the other. Maybe trump has some information about allen. I would not be surprised if he did. And maybe or maybe other kinds of threats that allen is very aware that trump has done in the past and pulled off, and maybe allen is very, very terrified of that going forward. You had alluded to trumps power and that weisselberg was in awe of him. If the company were to face criminal charges, what impact do you think that would have on the organization . Again, i go back to what is the organization . You know, theres so many Different Companies within it, and i imagine the buildings were held in llcs. Im not sure what exactly the prosecutors are going after, but from my knowledge, allen is the most responsible person and he would be the target, and the penalties are very extensive, quite extensive. The pressure is on weisselberg, its clear. If the prosecutors dont get what they want out of him, they seem to be willing to go ahead and go after him and the company. Well see what that involves by way of indictment and penalties down the road. Do you think theyve reached the tip of the iceberg . Yes, absolutely. And hopefully it should be. You know, trumps worst problem is not giving chits away. The Tax Situation is very extensive. Barbara res, we always call on you for context. Thanks for joining us today. The man who murdered george floyd starting his first day of a 22. 5year sentence behind bars this morning. A mixed reaction to Derek Chauvins sentence. The floyd family wanted 30 years. His woes are not other yet. Hes accused of violating floyds civil rights and anothers civil rights. We have the latest. Reporter good morning to you. It was an emotional day inside the courtroom. Before the judge came down with the sentence, victim impact statements from four of the floyd Family Members including his 7yearold daughter. Two of his brothers very emotional as they tried to describe to the judge why they felt Derek Chauvin should receive the maximum sentence. Take a listen. I havent had a real nights sleep because of the nightmare i have of my Brother Pleading for his lifeover and over again, even saying, theyre going to kill me, please, officer, screaming for our mom. Were part of a fraternity o those fraternities that you enjoy. Reporter the court also hearing for the first time from Derek Chauvins mother who says her son is not a racist, hes a good man, and she was calling, of course, for a lesser sentence. Then we heard from Derek Chauvin himself who spoke very briefly, but offered condolences to the floyd family. Now that Derek Chauvin has been sentenced, he can appeal the conviction here, but many legal experts say its likely that he could face more prison time since he is facing two federal indictments. Kendis and lindsey. Meagan fitzgerald joining us from minneapolis. Thank you. Well hear frew from a civil rights attorney after the break. Coming up in the hour, the truth isnt out there . Were back now with more on the chauvin sentencing. 22. 5 years for murdering george floyd. Prosecutors wanted 30ees. Chauvin faces a separate civil case concerning George Floyds civil rights and another teenage incident. The three officers due to face charges next month. All four officers will be arraigned come august. Thank you for being here. As i mentioned, the prosecutor wanted 30 years. Got 22. 5. If hes good behind bars, hell get out in 15 years. Is this a good sentence . As a former prosecutor, one of the things i always do, i measure whether or not a sentence is clear based on the victims family whos left behind. One of the things that struck me is brandon williams, who you did hear during the sentencing hearing, we got justice, but not enough justice. They wanted the max. Prosecutors sought 30. He got 22. 5 years. One of the things thats highlighted here and is echoed in those sentiments, we rarely get to a point where a nonfederal officer is convicted of fatally shooting while on duty an individual while on duty. We got there. And we got a sentence on the upward departure from the sentencing guidelines. We have the guidelines, and i think its a fair sentence. Many people including myself would have wanted more giving the nature and severity of the offense. We got justice, but its not enough. There needs to be more accountability, not just for chauvin but for officers who engage in this type of misconduct altogether. Kristen f this had been a black guy, how much would the sentence have been . Interesting you say that. One of the things i looked at when looking into this, generally when you see officers facing manslaughter charges, the average sentence for conviction is about 21 years. The average sentence for a civilian, not necessarily based on race, but we now know how systemic racism exists around the justice suspect, around 40 years yochl sigh the disparity in that when the position is gone, despite the fact there should be a heightened responsibility and a heightened severity in the sentence when you abuse your position of authority. And coming from a former public servant, that is something that is really important because people depend on you to protect, to serve, and to ready make sure that they are safe. I mean, its still the lower average, what you mention there. We did hear from Chauvin Briefly yesterday. He said he was unable to provide a full formal Statement Due to other legal matters, but heres what else he had to say. Briefly i want to give my condolences to the floyd family. Theres going to be some other information in the future that would be of interest, and i hope things will give you some peace of mind. Thank you. Any idea what thats about . Its interesting, kendis, i emailed all of my friends who are legal defenders and others. Nobody could guess. At least he gave condolences to the family. Its the first time we heard him speak out. He couldnt say it in a way that would waive his appellate rights. To be honest, its way more than his mother offered. She didnt even acknowledge a loss of life. Dont even get me started about the mother. She kept talking about a mothers bond is unbreakable and thats why they shouldnt put him in jail, and i kept thinking about thats why george floyd kept screaming mama and he was being murdered, but well leave it there. Kristen gibbons fedon, thank you so much. Just when you thought bipartisan shp was back, lawmakers may be having a change of heart. And later on the Cross Connection, Jemel Hill Talks about sports. President bidens Infrastructure Deal appears to be on shaky ground just one day after what many label as a huge bipartisan win, the white house scrambling to manage the fallout, and republicans are threatening to pull out after biden said he wouldnt sign the nearly 600 billion Infrastructure Plan without the simultaneous package of an even more expensive democratonly reconciliation package. Amanda golden is joining us from capitol hill. Good morning to you. Tell us about this Infrastructure Deal. Reporter hi, lindsey. Its great to see you. As we saw with this announcement from president biden, hes only pushing forward this bipartisan deal if its signed along with this reconciliation package. It would allow the democrats to have the additional funding they associate with infrastructure. I want you to listen carefully to the Biden Announcement thats causing so many republicans to be frustrated with the path forward here. If only one comes to me, if this is the only one that comes to me, im not signing it. Its in tandem. Reporter its worth noting republicans were aware democrats were pushing forward with a reconciliation for their own priorities. Thats not the frustration. Its that biden is inextricably linking the two together, that its in tandem, hell only sign one if he gets the other. The white house is saying thats now it was presented to them. Theyre really working the phones. See Biden Pushing forward to make sure this stace on track both for republicans and democrats, the group of legislators who were negotiating here, and beyond that. Those who are frustrated, its because they didnt think the two would be linked. For joe manchin and kristen sinema, they were okay if that was going to be part of the track, but were hearing from aides they thought that would be a separate conversation. They are not onboard with these being completely in tandem before moving forward. We got a readout yesterday about statements that biden made to sinema. He said the president reiterated strong support for both the bipartisan infrastructure bill and reconciliation bill, moving forward on a twotrack system. He wants to see advance through the legislative process as quickly as possible and be presented to him for signing as quickly as possible. So the white house there is not literally relitigating, but theyre not pushing that in tandem. Theyre saying this dual track is what biden has always said he wanted to do, but thats causing concern and real possibilities for derailment as we move forward, lindsey. Derailment. I see what you did there. Amanda goldman, we know youll stay on top of evidencing. Thank you. Coming up later on, ali velshi from surfside, florida. That starts today at 8 00 a. M. Eastern. A wonderful thing that the administration did. In the meantime we move on now because Vice President Kamala Harris right now heading to the west coast after wrapping up her visit to el paso, texas, yesterday. She met with young girls at a Border Fa Sill and touring a custom center. Harris faced increasing pressure to visit the center. Shes addressing the root causes of migration when the surge was at its peak in march. Lauren eagan has more on this. Good morning. Your trip to South America inflamed criticism about the border situation. What are we hearing behind the scenes that this trip to the Southern Border did to quell all of that . Reporter thats right. The Vice President made this trip yesterday, kendis, after months of criticism from republicans who said she should have gone to the border earlier on right after she was initially tasked with this assignment to address the root causes of migration. That criticism really intensified earlier this month after she took that trip to mexico and guatemala. Republicans said she should have gone to the border first before making that international trip. But to answer your question of whether or not this is going to quash some of that criticism now that shes actually made that visit to the border, i think the answer is no. Even after she announced the trip saying she would be going to el paso, Republicans Quickly came out, said that she should have selected a different part of the u. S. mexico border to visit, one that sees more border crossings on average. The Vice President said yesterday the reason she chose el paso was in part symbolic. Heres what she had to say while she was on the ground yesterday. As you know, weve inherited a truf situation. Right here in el paso was the launch of the policy. You saw it as it rolled on the ground real time. We have looked at a system where people have been housed in inhumane conditions over the last many years, a system that has been broken and needs to be reconstructed. Reporter now, guys, the white house has said her decision to go to the border was in no way politically motivated. It was not in response to criticism, nor was it in response to the fact that former President Donald Trump will be there next week. She said she always planned to go to the border, and this was just the right time to do it, kendis. Yeah, lauren, i want to get your take on what youre learning on this other big story brewing in washington, d. C. , this morning, the doj announcing it is suing the State Of Georgia over imposing new limits on voting. Break it down. Thats right. The Justice Department announced yesterday they had filed a lawsuit against georgia. This comes after georgia republicans passed a restrictive voting law earlier this year. The Justice Department has said that they feel that that law violates the Voting Rights act because they said that Georgia State republicans passed that law knowing it would disproportionately impact black voters. The law has a lot of elements in it such as restricting and rolling back some mailin voting, for example, which is used more by black voters in georgia than white voters. Georgian Republican Brian Kemp said the lawsuit was based on lice. Now, keep in mind that this lawsuit comes just days after Senate Republicans and the u. S. Senate blocked a Voting Rights bill that would have addressed some of these issues in georgia. And the Biden White House has been asked for weeks now, what are you going to do if you cant get federal legislation passed . The white house has struggled to lay out a concrete example of what theyre going to do in the event federal legislation isnt an option. I think this lawsuit We Saw Yesterday really foreshadows what we might expect. If the Biden White House cant get that bill passed in the u. S. Senate, perhaps they can go through the courts instead to address some of these voting issues, kendis. Lauren egan appearing from washington, d. C. It appears the storm is coming over d. C. Sydney, australia, has started a twoweek lockdown there. And israel, a country praised for its handling of the pandemic is reinstating its indoors mask mandate in order to halt the spread. Molly, i was looking at those numbers for sydney. Its beyond belief. Its a city of 5 million cases but 80 cases in the last few days forcing it to go into lockdown. Hey, kendis, lindsey, thats right. Those two countries that you mentioned, australia and israel, those were poster child, kind of golden children of the early pandemic response. As you remember, israel shut down, got jabs in arms, and reopened faster than almost anywhere else. Now because of delta, new restrictions are going in. Guys, the u. S. Needs to pay attention. Take a look. Masks are back on in israel as the country scrambles to contain its biggest surge in nearly three months. The new cases, about 90 of the Delta Variant, nearly half affecting fully vaccinated adults, though affecting them less seriously and not requiring hospitalization. A traveler ignored quarantine, sparking an outbreak. And in the uk, delta has become so dominant, accounting for 95 of new cases. 47 of people are fully vaccinated. When these variants emerge, its like you cant put the genie back in the bottle very easily. Reporter theyre working on the new variants, a new warning for the u. S. You look at detection and then understand what that variant really means. Reporter in the u. S. , around 20 of cases are delta, and experts say the fastest way to avoid what the uk is seeing, vaccinate and put Public Health restrictions back in place. I dont know if you can hear us, but we want to talk about the implications of delta here in the u. S. Right now the Positivity Rate is only about 2 . But that Delta Variant accounts for 20 of the cases duchls this mean were going to see indoor mask mandates return, for example, when kids return to school in the fall . Yeah, lindsey, look. Thats the big question. Important to look. You saw that purple look in that piece and how quickly the Delta Variant has taken over the uk cases. So i asked Professor Sharon peacock, great last name, of course, about whether what the u. S. Could do basically to stop the delta cases from going from 20 of the caseload to 95 in the uk. She said, look, based on the data, based on the behavior she has seen in the uk, the answer is know. Two important points she made. She made the point that its going to be like a swinging door. A word of warning, were on different schedules on both sides of the pond. For americans wanting to travel overseas later this summer, they really need to keep an eye on the restrictions. The rules right now may not be the rules in august. The second point, weve been talking about the threshold of global immunity. With highly transmissible variants like the delta, that needs to be closer to 80 to 85 , and even though the u. S. And uk are doing really well, were not cleechbs to giving u for concern. Thank you, molly, good to see you. Up next, breaking down what exactly is in that highly anticipated Pentagon Ufo Report and why the nations top officials are stumped. Its finally that highly anticipated government report on ufos, the Department Of Defense trying to determine exactly what they are and where theyre from, and were learning that the truth we dont really know. We dont really know, do we . Out of the nearly 150 sightings u. S. Intelligence was able to identify just one as a deflating balloon, others remain unexplained according to this report, nbcs Courtney Kube has the details. Reporter the anticipated report is here but the answers are not. U. S. Government officials examined 144 reports of uaps like these and still dont know what 143 of them were. Among the possibilities they considered, debris in the air, atmospheric conditions, secret u. S. Equipment, a foreign adversarys advanced technology or simply other. A senior u. S. Government official said they dont have enough data to identify the objects but said there is no evidence they are extraterrestrials. If you want to tell me theyre aliens visiting i need better data than what youre giving me. Also no evidence that any of the uaps are a foreign adversary but a senior u. S. Official said they still pose a safety and possible Operational Security concern. The report itself assigned that the u. S. Government is taking this seriously. Its been under this shadow of a taboo and now not only do we have the report but we have high level officials who have come forward and said this is real, we dont know what it is. Reporter but for now the search continues. Absence of evidence is not the same thing as evidence of absence. Weve barely scratched the surface of the universe in our search for life. Reporter this report is not the end. The u. S. Government plans to collect more data and organize it into a database to figure out what really is out there. Courtney, thank you so much. For much more on this, lets go over to Gideon Louis Krause who has been tracking and investigating this story. Good morning, gideon, feels like we still have a ton of questions and not a lot of answers. Is this what you expected . I think this is generally what people expected. I dont think anyone thought this report was going to come out and settle this 74yearold question definitively one way or the other. Certainly there were some people who had let their expectations get away with them but generally this is what people expected is that it would be highly qualified, and the conclusion would be we need to do more study. Gideon, the one object they were able to identify turned out to be a large deflating balloon, and absolutely no concrete answers on the other sightings. For those of us who were hoping to find out that we may not be alone, do we have to go back to assuming that we are, indeed, alone . Not in that category, actually, but, you know, i feel as if it gave us actually more evidence of alien life being out there. Well, im not sure that we need to change our expectations either way about whether were alone or not. I think that, you know, the report certainly says that as far as theyre concerned, and of course this is the dmi so presumably they would know this is not classified u. S. Technology, says that lack the data confirm this is the technology of an adversary. Of course they say this could be birds, it could be garbage flying around the atmosphere, it could be paper bags, but presume bly those things would not be a matter of concern for the safety ofory pilots. It leaves this catchall bin pretty open called other. One can make of that what one will. Weve already heard several senators and Congress People who have made statements saying we need further study of this stuff and over the past couple weeks weve even heard of the possibility that there could even be congressional hearings. I think you just touched on one of the aspects of this that i found most fascinating and that is the catchall other bin. What did you make of that, and obviously also, you know, while they werent able necessarily to confirm, yes, this may be technology from an adversary are there still National Security concerns here . I mean, certainly, its hard to imagine that they would be so concerned about doing this if there werent some kind of National Security concerns and of course theres been very good reporting that suggests that a these could be drones or drone swarms and those are obviously things we would have to be around about given the frequency with which theyre seen near our military installations. As far as the catchall other bucket goes, you know, this is its been more or less the same story for decades that, you know, you rule out what you can, and then there still is this kind of residual few percent of these sightings that cant be accounted for. The question is whether those represent a meaningful category in and of themselves. Certainly the debunkers dont think so but you get reports like this and they rule out a lot of stuff and then at a certain point they have to throw up their hands and shrug their shoulders and say theres stuff we cant make Heads Or Tails of. The summary of the report is, basically we have no idea. Yeah. Were going to have to leave one go ahead, really quickly. One strange thing the report says is that not only will we need more study and more data, but that for some of these we might actually need more scientific knowledge, which is a weird thing to read in a government report. In order to be able to process some of these sightings. Okay, were not smart enough, is basically what youre saying. Apparently. All right. Didnt have to tell me twice. Gideon lewiskraus, thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. Were going to go ahead and begin a new hour of msnbc right now. First up, at 7 00 a. M. Eastern an msnbc, warning signs, new details on the florida condo collapse this morning as we learn an engineer had urged management to repair parts of the buildings crumbling foundation in 2018.
