The israeli parliament has approved a new Coalition Government, Ousting Benjamin Netanyahu as Prime Minister after 12 years in power. The new administration will share power. For the first two years, it will be led by the right wing nationalist politician Naftali Bennett. He will then hand over to yair lapid, the leader of the centrist yesh atid, for a further two years. Heres our middle East Correspondent tom bateman. Theyve waited for 12 years. In this divided country, for the people who wanted to oust their most enduring leader, now its their moment. It took a chaotic vote in Israels Parliament to get there. With the count about to start, Mr Netanyahu makes one last stand. Iran is celebrating because they understand there will be a weak and slack government, he says. The opposition in israel will have a clear and strong voice. Well be back soon the new Coalition Scrapes in byjust a single vote. It was all over for israels combative, often controversial leader, one who leaves an indelible legacy. Benjamin netanyahu rose rallying israelis against the oslo peace deals with the palestinians. There is a battle forjerusalem. He was a figurehead for the right. Supporters saw him as mr security. But opponents despised his tough brand of nationalism. He won successive elections, but he split voters. And a trial for corruption, claims he denies, left him increasingly isolated. Israels new pm is Mr Netanyahus former aide, Naftali Bennett a nationalist who opposes a future palestinian state. He called for unity, but laid into those he said were tearing the country apart. After two years, Hell Hand over to the centrist yair lapid. How long will the coalition last . Israels new coalition spans the left to the nationalist right and, for the first time, an arab israeli party. Naftali bennett now has to lead the broadest coalition in israeli history, and that could make it one of the most unstable. He has his Work Cut outjust to govern. They have a crisis to deal with. After israels recent war with hamas In Gaza and violent division inside israel, fears are rising of new tensions again. But this is a moment of israeli history, as the throne is pulled away from the politician some called the king of israel. Tom bateman, bbc news, jerusalem. Our correspondent Yolande Knell Injerusalem says this is a hugely significant moment for israeli politics. Well, this is a really momentous day in israeli politics, james. First of all, we have, clearly, The End of the era of Benjamin Netanyahu, at least for the moment. He has spent 15 years as Prime Minister, he is the longest serving Prime Minister that israel has ever seen. And then on top of that, what makes this also really historic is the fact we have this very unlikely coalition, voted in by a razor thin margin. The vote of confidence went through with 60 votes yes, 59 votes against and one abstention. And its made up from eight political parties from across the political spectrum, from the far right thats where Naftali Bennett is located himself across, through to the left, and for the first time, the government is going to rely on the support of an independent arab israeli party. Now, what really galvanises these different parties is their opposition to Benjamin Netanyahu. They dont want him to continue as leader because the country has had now two years of political deadlock, it has not, afterfour elections, been able to come up with a really strong Coalition Government, and they say this has brought them together. What really divides the country, it stems a lot from Benjamin Netanyahu himself, and particularly the fact that he remains on trial for corruption, those charges that he denies. But now, the challenge is very clear how does this Coalition Government manage to push through new legislation . Its laid out an agenda which is based around social and economic policies. Its going to continue on some Foreign Policy issues, looking for more normalisation deals, better relations with other arab countries and particularly retaining a hard line when it comes to iran. Yolande, id like to ask a question that was last asked, ithink, in 1999, when Mr Netanyahu lost power to Ehud Barak is this it for Benjamin Netanyahu . I mean, he has said in his speech earlier that he has come back twice before from being knocked into opposition. He is going to be a formidable opposition leader, somebody also who controls a quarter of the knesset, the parliamentary seats, with his own likud party. Thats more than any other political party at the moment. And he has said that he is determined to return to power. Now, one of the policies that this new government is talking about trying to pass is a Term Limit for the Prime Minister, so that a future Prime Minister would only be able to serve maximum of two terms that would be eight years. Could that affect Benjamin Netanyahu . It remains to be seen. Yolande knell reporting. President biden has arrived in the belgian capital brussels for two days of meetings with nato and the european union. Mondays talks with the 28 members of nato are expected to see the United States resume its traditional leadership role, which had been somewhat diminished during the trump presidency. Nato leaders are expected to formulate a firm message for Mr Biden to take to geneva on wednesday, where he will meet President Putin. Mr biden, of course, has spent the past three days at the G7 Summit in south west england, which ended with a final communique that included the promise of A Billion Covid Vaccine doses to the poorer nations of The World and more action on climate change. From cornwall, heres our political editor laura kuenssberg. Ready for a fortifying early dip . Borisjohnson wanted to show off the british seaside to the most powerful leaders in The World, but has ended up going headlong into a clash on the side with the french president , who its claimed questioned whether Northern Ireland was really part of the uk. The spectacle of the summit seemed immaculate. The more bracing reality, perhaps not so inviting. I know that The World was looking to us to reject some of the selfishness and nationalistic approaches that have marred the initial global response to the pandemic. I do hope that we have lived up to some of the most optimistic of hopes and predictions. Were you offended by president macron s comments in your Meeting Yesterday about northern Irelands Place in the uk . I think its the job of the Government Of The United Kingdom to uphold the territorial integrity of the united kingdom. I think it was a point i made to you yesterday. And actually, that subject occupied this vestigial, vanishingly small proportion of our deliberations. And youve listed what you believe to be the achievements of this summit. But health and environmental campaigners are really clear that they hoped it would go further. Do you wish youd been able to push your fellow leaders to give even greater commitments . 2. 5 billion pledged for girls education already. Thats not half bad. And a new global campaign to help countries Around The World to build back better, cleaner and greener. I think its been a highly productive few days. This global gathering is important for all sorts of reasons. It seems a good first connection between the Prime Minister and the american president , but the uk and the eu seem stuck again, pointing the finger at Each Other over Northern Ireland. Remember, as part of the brexit deal, it still has to follow some eu rules. The prime Ministers Frustration how tightly brussels wants them enforced. European leaders angered, believing the uk is trying to slide out of what it agreed. Honestly, we cant create disagreements every morning about these serious issues, said the french president. We just want the agreement to be respected. But the american President S 12 Vehicle Convoy rolled out to this tiny cornish town. He wanted to leave behind a much bigger message. That, after all the turbulence of trump, he wants to work with the rest of The World. I felt it wasnt about me. It was about america. I felt a genuine sense of enthusiasm that america was back at the table and fully, fully engaged. Big promises have been made on vaccines, on climate change, but there are blanks in the black and white over how those vows will be kept. And the Cornish Air certainly hasnt blown away brexit tensions. But overall, this summit has been a major statement of intent from the most powerful politicians in the west, that after a year of crisis, countries can do more together than working apart. However spectacular the surroundings, Summits Cant just be political love ins. Prime ministers and President S may have ambition in common, but ideas can clash. Postcard images dont make political problems disappearfor good. Laura kuenssberg reporting. Well, lets get some of the days other news. Voters in switzerland have rejected Government Proposals to limit Carbon Dioxide emissions, throwing into doubt the Countrys Strategy to comply with the paris climate deal. The new Co2 Law Wouldve also seen a surcharge on Car Fuel and a levy on flight tickets. It was among a number of environmental proposals narrowly rejected in a nationwide referendum. A retired Army Colonel from the Pinochet Era in chile has been arrested in argentina. Walther Klug Riveria was arrested in Buenos Aires after being spotted earlier this month, the Argetine Authroities Say he will be sent back to chile. Where he stands accused of the murder of 23 people during the era of pinochet s dictatorship, which lasted from 1973 to 1990. Thousands of right wing Spanish Protestors want to try and stop the government from pardoning of a number of separatist catalan leaders jailed for sedition. The protestors accuse the socialist led government of trying to shore up political support with those opposed to spanish unity. The governments supports say that pardons would help ease tensions with the catalan region. The british Prime Minister, borisjohnson, will announce later On Monday whether or not covid restrictions in england are to be lifted onjune 21st. There are reports that a delay of up to four weeks is being considered. The main concern is the increase in cases linked to the variant from india, and the potential impact on hospitals in the coming weeks. Our health correspondent Jim Reed has been looking at the data. Drinks and socialising outside this afternoon. Tomorrow, the government must decide whether to lift all remaining Lockdown Rules in england from june 21st, perhaps scrapping that limit of six people inside. The growth of the Delta Variant first found in india has made that call more difficult. Scientists think it may spread 60 faster than the older Kent Or Alpha version. Speaking on the andrew marr programme, a Government Adviser said relaxing rules further could fan the flames of the pandemic. The way i look at it is, if youre driving down a road and you are coming up to a bend and you are not quite sure whats around that bend, but you think there might be something bad, you dont put your foot on the accelerator. If anything, you slow down, not speed up. And i think its analogous to that. I think weve got to be really cautious. Covid infections are still well below the levels seen injanuary, but they have been rising since some indoor mixing was allowed. This Graph Plots cases so you can more easily see the rate of growth. What scientists want to see is for that straight line to start curving round, as transmission starts to slow down. If that doesnt happen, then at the current rate of growth, we could see 15,000 cases a day by the start of next week. The hope is the Vaccine Roll out can prevent those new cases turning into hospital admissions. There are about half as many people in hospital now across the uk, based on our infection rate, than what you would expect. And the reason for that is the older groups who were more likely to go into hospital have had both doses of the vaccine. The data shows a second Vaccine Dose provides far more protection against the Delta Variant than just one. Scientists say its why a delay to that final stage of unlocking might be needed to give more time to getjabs into arms this summer. Jim reed, bbc news. Do stay with us here on bbc news. The latest headlines Israels Parliament has voted to approve a new Coalition Government that ends Benjamin Netanyahus 12 year run as Prime Minister. It will be headed for the first two years by the religious nationalist Naftali Bennett. G7 leaders have ended their summit in england with promises of more than A Billion coronavirus vaccinations to poorer countries and help to tackle climate change. Lets get more on that change of government in israel. A little earlier, i spoke to dani danon, who was israels ambassador to the United Nations under Benjamin Netanyahu, and asked him what the former Prime Minister would do now. James, we are very proud of our democracy. And what we have witnessed here tonight is a peaceful transition of power, and it proves that we are a strong democracy maybe the only one in our region. Prime minister netanyahu. I take that, then, sorry, i take that, then, that you disagree with Mr Netanyahu, your leader, in recent days who said this was the greatest fraud of the century, this new government . No, what he meant was that Mr Bennett made a very specific commitment not to join forces with the left in Israel And Hejust did. But technically, legally, it is the legal perspective that he will meet the prime Minister Elect and will sit with him, and everything will be peaceful. Thats the way we handle our democracy. Yes, of course, that is the way you handle your democracy. But i wonder if theres special praise for that, when the fact is every single transfer of power since 19118 in israel has been peaceful that has been taken for granted. A lot of israelis at the Ballot Box Youll know this better than me shared Mr Netanyahus views, but a lot of them didnt like him himself. Politics is notjust about views, its about personal relationships. Why did he fail so badly with personal relationships to the extent that four of his former allies, at least in ideological terms, are now in a government which got rid of him . You want to focus on the failures, i want to focus on achievements. And after 12 years in office, i want to mention some of these achievements. 0k, weve been through a lot of the achievements. Im looking the question ive asked you, and youve kindly agreed to come on the programme would you mind me asking the question again . The question ive asked you, because youve agreed to come on the programme. The Uk Today with the vaccines and covid, Prime Minister for his service. And today, he will continue to sell the government and people of israel, but not from the position of Prime Minister. He will do it as the leader of the opposition, and he will try to come back to the position of the Prime Minister. Ok, you say hell try to come back, and i do appreciate that, id still like to be able to ask the question about personal relationship failures. Hell come back how could he come back, though, when hes alienated so many of his former allies . These are not people who opposed his policies, but former allies like Naftali Bennett, Benny Gantz people who now sit in the Coalition Government because he alienated them . So, you would be surprised, but i do agree with you that he made a few mistakes. When you serve in office for 12 years, you have enemies, political enemies. I want to bring you back to Margaret Thatcher after her long service, and in other places where you stay in office for long yes, you create issues and luggage, people who dont want you staying in power. And that is true today. The majority of the voters wanted netanyahu to continue his post. But like you mentioned, the political players, the heads of the parties, didnt want to collaborate with him. And thats why today, we see a very bizarre government, a coalition of 60 votes out of 120, and you see the left and right getting together with only one thing in common the desire to remove netanyahu. They achieved it tonight, and it will probably be the first and last achievement of this government. Dani danon there.
