At 10 00pm. Well be here with a full round up of the days news. First, newscast. I am in cornwall for the g7 which means i have a beautiful view of the sea. Laura has her own private political Editor Balcony with her own even better view and chris you are not in the cupboard i did not get a ticket to cornwall but i got an upgrade to the main studio. I am on my own but it is a joy to be here, quite snazzy compared to my box down the corridor. Do you want to see the lovely cornish snacks i have . There is no Cliche Underdone on this podcast so lets see your bounty. These are three g7 Special Pasties from a bakery in St Ives. Shall i take you through them . Tell me, in excruciating detail. This will sound disgusting. These pasties are massive. The first is a Big Biden, a normal Cornish Pastry but bigger because it is american. What makes a normal Cornish Pastry . Steak and potato. Pretty nice. Classic. Do you have some water . Laura, you are missing out on this. Are you eating on camera . I cannot see but i can hear chomping and it is not something i ever really planned to do. But i havent eaten since breakfast and this is ten past seven so you are making me jealous but we have been running around all day. Is it nice . Is it good . The Big Biden was nice. That was just a classic one. This the one im excited about the borisjohnson and it is flavoured with stilton. This is the bacon sandwich moment. I do love a Cheese And Onion slice. Stilton in a pastry is surprisingly nice. I dont think youre going to be asked to appear on masterchef anytime soon. I think your vocabulary is a little limited. I got myself a Cornish Pastry on the way and there was a lot of references to hand crimped pastry. A wonderful phrase. crimper often appears in the tabloids next to articles about posh hairdressers. Adam, you didnt make any reference to the pastry. Im very disappointed. Anyway, bring one of them back. Welcome to newscast. Hello. This is adam at the G7 Summit in cornwall. And laura is down The Hill a little bit on a balcony in St Ives because i cant get back into where you are. The place is in lockdown. And i am chris here in the main Newscast Studio having had, as i said, an upgrade. But i am on my own with no ticket to cornwall. Having people in three different places was not challenging enough so we thought we would add in a fourth in a fourth place, and that is lord Kim Darroch who used to be our man in washington, our ambassador to the us. Good evening. The Star Attraction at this summit before it starts isJoe Biden, making his first foreign trip. Is that a diplomatic coup . Something that borisjohnson will be celebrating, that he bagged the first visit . I am sure the prime minister will be really happy that Joe Biden has made his first foreign trip to the uk it is a coup for him but there is an element of luck in this because he has come because we are hosting the G7 Summit and had we not been hosting it, i am not sure that biden would necessarily have come first to london. I but, look, Borisjohnson He has been a lucky prime minister but it is good news for the uk as a whole laura, youve had a busy day, you havent even had a chance of a Cornish Pastry before lunch. Can you talk us through some of the iconic Boris Biden Stuff we have seen already . It is a huge moment of history when you see any first encounter between any american president and british prime minister. It fills a page of the history book, just the fact the meeting is happening itself. But afterwards, he said it was a breath of Fresh Air dealing withJoe Biden because there were so many areas where the two countries want to work together, covid 19, climate, all sorts of things and that makes today matter. The other reason why the whole shindig matters is that it is the first time that any of these World Leaders have properly seen each other since the terrible pandemic washed across the world and there is a real opportunity for the united kingdom to, to use a fancyjargon word, to make this an inflection point. The moment where the biggest democracies in the world say that the previous year has been every man to himself but now lets get together see what can be done. Lastly, if you want a little more gossip, it was the first big public appearance of the new Mrs Johnson who strolled casually along the beach with Jill Biden and interesting to see the choreography of that was captured by some of these snappers and Eagle Eyed camera people, Walking On The Beach barefoot with Baby Wilfred and Dr Biden after the meeting. We got a lot of those pictures that will play on the news for years and years to come of them doing the pointing across the beach and in the corners of the shot was the prince of Wales Aircraft Carrier and the reason the Prince Of Wales was there was back in 1941 Winston Churchill sailed to the us to see President Roosevelt on the ship and they signed a thing called the Atlantic Charter which was all about how the uk and the us would work in a postwar world and what happened today in cornwall is that Biden And Borisjohnson have signed a new version, a 2021 edition about how both countries will co operate on modern 80 years ago prime Minister Winston Roosevelt signed an agreement known as the Atlantic Charter. It was a statement a promise that the united kingdom and united states would meet the challenges of their rage and they would meet it together. I wonder what you make of this Atlantic Charter stuff. Tell us a bit about President Biden. When the lines you have to describe it when you met her most describing is being he talkative. First of all, the Atlantic Charter, a very clever idea. Id like to know whose it was. It was very striking for me that americans were prepared to mark this first meeting with this gesture i because it is quite a big gesture and it sort of brings echoes of roosevelt and churchill. Which is great for one of churchills biographers, one borisjohnson. So i am struck that they have done it. | the Atlantic Charter back in 1941 had a big impact in charting and it sort of brings echoes of roosevelt and churchill. Which is great for one of churchills biographers, one borisjohnson. So i am struck that they have done it. | the Atlantic Charter back in 1941 had a big impact in charting the immediate course of postwar history. I we will see if this one has the same impact. | it is a positive gesture. OnJoe Biden, look, he comes from a modest background. The son of a used car salesman, brought up in Scranton Pennsylvania Lwhich was an archetypal rustbelt| town in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. And now it is doing a bit better. He is a lifelong politician. He was, to be frank, a pretty average student at college but he got into politics very early. And was an extremely young to be elected senator with 40 odd years in the american senate where he made his. Name as a moderate. Doggedly working across the aisle trying to make deals with the republicans to get things done. I rather different from the sort of firebrand radical liberal younger liberals of the modern democrat party. Ran three times for president , third time presidency, third time lucky. L barack Obamas Vice President for eight years. A remarkable story in its way, it really is, that fulfilment of the american dream. It is a different Politicaljourney And Story certainly to that of Boris Johnson but one of the other things that Joe Biden has had as a huge part of his career, his interest in ireland. I was reminded today by some of the people here how active he was in many of those early years about trying to put pressure on but also trying to push some of the irish agenda when he was in dc and the White House has made no secret of their alarm over what is going on, this Stand Off between the eu and uk over the northern irish protocol. But the early soundings from the meeting between the two today suggest that there was not real any clash, there was just a real reminder of the intent that people had to push on, they had to get this sorted out and everybody on all sides had to be serious about the good Friday Agreement. Do you think, actually, there are serious ructions over this behind the scenes or would biden have been more emollient . I think the biden. Firstly, you are right. He is a lifelong member, i am sure, of the friendsj of Ireland Caucus in the us congress an irish mother, proud of his irish ancestry and i think he has signalled throughout his presidency, right to his first Phone Call to borisjohnson that he is going to watch the irish political issue very closely. I never thought that he would want to take sides publicly, not against the uk or the eu on this issue because in the back | of the mind i think he is thinking| that that there may be a possible need for us Brokering Efforts somewhere down the line. I that is best done in private and best done when you havent burnt your bridges with either party. I expect he has done today, what he has done is signal his close interest to the prime minister, stressed how closely he is following it and his message basically has been you need to sort this out. Not attributing blame one way or another but saying keep the good Friday Agreement whole and sound and safe. You need to sort this out quickly. And that is where The Americans will be. They will hope that we and the eu can find solutions to the trade issues that have come up because of the border in the irish sea, we do that quicklyl and then move forward on the basis of the Northern Ireland. Protocol which americans have said they support. The message will be to get this sorted. It is interesting, watching through the week about how this issue has crept closer and closer to the g7 agenda, even though it does not feature anywhere on the documents or on the many panels and working sessions they will have. And it kicked off on our sister podcast, americacast, where they interviewed jake sullivan, the national security adviser, he made a comment. The uk and the Eu Need to work out the specifics and modalities on that, they need to find some way to proceed that works for both the eu and the uk. But whatever way they find to proceed must, at its core, fundamentally protect the gains of the good Friday Agreement. And then there were a couple of newspaper stories about various leaked documents and notes and things that seemed to up the ante a little bit and then we had the bilaterals betweenJoe Biden and borisjohnson and then the prime minister came out of that meeting and as laura said he sounded relaxed about that on the subject. America, the united states, washington, The Uk Plus the European Union have one thing we absolutely all want to do and that is to uphold the good friday, the belfast good Friday Agreement and make sure we keep the balance of the Peace Process going. That is absolutely common ground and i am optimistic we can do it. What is really interesting is if you look at the last bit about the Atlantic Charter we were talking about a minute ago, there were two clauses about Northern Ireland and they talk about the signatories to the good Friday Agreement and they talk. The uk and ireland, and they talk about the uk and the united states working together to help Northern Ireland promote peace. There was no mention of the eu, who are not a signatory to the good Friday Agreement. And so i wonder if Downing Street will be happy with that tonight because there was no kind of strong arming by the us to say sign up to what the eu interprets the protocol to mean. I think number 10 will be quite pleased with that. Although chatting to the Eu People here at this summit, because, remember, there will be loads of Eu Leaders and President S of eu institutions, their theory is that it would get borisjohnson through the first few hours with biden but it does not necessarily mean it disappears from the agenda over the next few days because there will be many people here who still want to talk about the protocol in Northern Ireland laura, lets talk about stuff that is not the protocol, talk about what is on the agenda. What are the big things that will come out of this big meeting . I think tons, actually, it is a massively ambitious agenda with loads on it. They will want big international commitments on vaccines, they will want to make progress on the climate deal, particularly remember the us has another big internationaljamboree in november, there is quite important groundwork they want to get done here this week on that. Nothing more than anything else, actually, it is not so much the agenda items, what borisjohnson also wants to do, notjust with the g7, but what he calls the d11 football team, because dont forget South Korea will be here as well, australia will be here, india will be dialling in well, so you have 11 countries in the margins getting here, is to say to the world, after a terrible year, and awful after the turbulence of the trump presidency, who was not overly interested in countries working together, he wants to say the democratic big guns are back and are determined to work together and when they do work together really good things can happen. The interesting thing, we will be talking about this in a few days time, is whether that really massive ambition actually, by monday, feels anything like having been achieved. I think it is more than any of the individual items, it is the overall message that diplomacy for democracies is back and, yes, it can make a difference to lots of peoples lives in a good way. One of the interesting things to think about is what kinds of perhaps quite subtle hints or signs there are about how this group of countries wants to approach china and its influence and do they want to sorta be very overt about the kind of pushback they are trying to do as the worlds biggest democracies. I think Lauras Analysis of the ambition to use this event to relaunch the main democracies, the sort of role of global leadership, is absolutely right. Its very much at the centre of hopes for this summit and for the extra four countries. And there is a lot that can be done. If there is a new era of global cooperation between the leading democracies that is about to happen. But lets be clear, you cant achieve what we need to achieve on Climate Change unless you can also get china and india, in particular, absolutely on board. So we cant do this just as the g7 or d11, you will need at some point to build bridges with china to get them signed up to a collective effort to reach our Climate Change ideals. If we take a step back from all of this, it picks up from what you were saying, the importance of leaders physically getting together in the same place. The importance of these summits, huge shindigs that they are in people together Face To face in terms of Building Trusts and relationships. Also, inevitably, the vagaries of the weather. Ifind myself delving back into your book and i wouldnt have necessarily have thought of this particular picture from 1964 as having a diplomatic bearing upon the events of today and where the president was or wasnt able to go in The End but is but a picture in your book, kim, of your brother and you standing in front of a door, on holiday in cornwall, summer of 1965, you write, note the clothing, appropriate to a cornish summer. For our podcast listeners, you are wearing what looks like a remarkably thick Duffel Coat on top of several other layers. I suppose President Biden had a little experience of that with the cancellation of the whole business of going to st michaels mount. The poor staff had this plan. President Biden And Borisjohnson were to meet dramatically for the first time on st michaels mount, which is kind of over the other side of cornwall and dont get in touch, my geography is not great, im probably not pointing the right direction. It is a little island that the tide sometimes allows you to go out to and sometimes not. They had amazing plan, the Aircraft Carrier was meant to be in the back drop, but the cornish weather did for the whole thing, Grey Skies were down and they did not take the risk, so they had this meeting and the pictures were still a stroll along the beach and it was very beautiful but not quite the drama. And all the president Ial Helicopters which had been Practising Landing on the island did not get to test out their manoeuvres. To think, kim, you could have told them this 50 years ago i remember that 1964 holiday very well. Mostly for the fact that it rained every single day in august in cornwall. This didnt put me off cornwall, because my wife and i now own something the size of a small Garden Shed on the South Coast of cornwall. What laura describes as the cornish weather you have experienced now is absolutely typical. Four seasons inside the day is the normal thing. If it is less than four, summer will be the one missed out. So they are getting classic cornish weather. Just on the g7. There have been, as you would know, some very unremarkable G7 Meetings in the past, where it has been difficult to find a story or a real outcome that makes a difference to people. I think this one can be different, because the issues are brexit, global economic recovery after the pandemic, global vaccination programme, because we will not be through the challenge and the threat of covid until a lot more of the world is vaccinated than America And Europe and Climate Change three big challenges that affect everyones lives and if this g7 can find some answers and can start to pave the way towards global cooperation which really addresses these challenges then it will have been one of the most significant G7 Meetings in recent times. So that is a real challenge and a real target for the prime minister, but for all the other participants at this meeting. It can be a really. A meeting which doesntjust Relaunch Cooperation amongst the community of democracies, but which really relaunches the g7 as an institution, an event which changes history. Just before you go, i have a little challenge for your diplomatic stills so we can see if they are up to scratch. You have had quite a tricky relationship with borisjohnson in the past, do you think he is actually turning out to be quite a good Diplomat And Performer on the World Stage . Do you know, thats interesting. What i think of borisjohnson is, having been, maybe laura and chris were not surprised by the strength of his election victories a couple of months ago, but i think one of the things that biden will have noticed is how well johnson does as a politician when he faces elections. They may have concluded we want a good relationship with this guy because he is going to be around. But i think is still to be tested in terms of his international diplomacy skills and how he handles this summit and how we handles the Cop26 Summit will be a major test for him. He has the charm, the empathy, the personality to carry it off, but you also need to command the detail and know all the substance and im not saying he hasnt done this and hasnt worked through his briefs, but i think people will be looking to see evidence that he has. But if he has he could really make his mark at this summit. Your excellency, as we should call ambassadors, thank you very much forjoining us on newscast. It was a great pleasure. Thank you. Before you go, and before we go, talk us through friday at the summit, adam, what is happening . This is when all the leaders start arriving like Charles Michel and Justin Trudeau are here in cornwall already and we will get the others arriving tomorrow and i think the thing to look out for tomorrow is pledges, pledges on how many doses of vaccine the rich countries here are going to donate to the poorer countries elsewhere. So look out for the number and also the period over which those donations are made, because people like the Wellcome Trust and unicef are saying there should be1 billion doses this year. So check out the number and the duration, that is my advice when the announcement comes tomorrow. Laura, the summit rolls on all weekend . It does. As well as vaccines there will be talk about Climate Change, there will be talk about the economy. They imagine some meetings between European Leaders and Boris Johnson, the northern irish issue was bound to come up again. But i also would be surprised if we might see the odd visit or little contact from perhaps some people who are even more, perhaps, important or more senior dignitaries than World Leaders. Might be the odd person popping in any next day or two. That is a proper tease on which to end. Strong links with cornwall . Whoever it is, i might try to get this microphone in front of them. I couldnt make our special Microphone Work on our kind of grey balcony. It doesnt mean we didnt have it with us. My spoffle was with you in real life as well as in spirit. Before i go, it is a summit so there is some swag, asmr as i open the plastic bag, you can now get a g7 uk 2021 face mask. Now that talking is over you can put it on. Marvellous. Thank you guys. Crosstalk. How does it look . Does it keep the Rain Off . That is my main question. Thanks to you guys for Tonights Podcast and you for listening. And thanks to all the newscasters who happen to be in St Ives this week and have been saying hello as i walk down the street buying pasties. It is great to bump into you. Newscast is big in St Ives. Goodbye. Good evening. Theres certainly been a lot more cloud around today, but not for all of us. In fact, further south and east, we did get some sunshine and some warmth. This was hastings a little earlier on. A Weather Front introduced more cloud generally across the country and a slightly fresher feel behind it as well. Now, the cloud didnt produce that much in the way of rain, but certainly it was quite persistent. And at times, many of us had scenes like this. This was leek in staffordshire. Good grass cutting weather, though, it has to be said. Now, as we move through this evening, that Weather Front sinks its way into the south east. We keep some cloud through the night as well. And because it was a cold front and its introduced something a little less humid behind, itll be a much more comfortable night for trying to get a good nights sleep. Overnight lows between 9 14 degrees. High pressure then builds once again in from the South West and the Wind Direction coming from the South West, so some pretty warm, humid air starts to return as that Air Source comes all the way up from the azores. So, on saturday, it may well start off quite cloudy, but the sunshine breaks through very quickly indeed. A few isolated showers into the far north of scotland, and maybe a little more cloud into the north west. So, here, 14 17 degrees, but we could see highest values of 24. Thats the mid 70s Fahrenheit by the middle of the afternoon. It bodes well for day three of the second test at edgbaston. As you can see quite clearly, certainly more sunshine than weve seen today and turning increasingly hot on sunday. Now, you cant avoid it, yes, the euros arrive, and wales first match looks likely, although its in baku, to be a hot affair as well. 27 degrees is likely with Blue Sky and sunshine. Back Close To Home now for sunday, a lot of sunshine around on sunday. A weak Weather Front will bring some cloud and Showery Rain into the Western Isles potentially, but 26 degrees not out of the question for aberdeen. 28 degrees is likely into the london area, and that means that for englands opening match against croatia at wembley, it is certainly going to be a hot affair. Sunscreen and Sun Hat at the ready if youre lucky enough to have tickets. The heat looks likely to peak on monday with indications of something a little fresher from tuesday. Im Nada Tawfik in New York and this is Bbc World News america. World leaders begin theirfirst in person talks for nearly two years at the g7, with the focus clearly on the coronavirus pandemic. Theyre set to pledge One Billion coronavirus vaccines to the worlds poorest countries in a bid to end the pandemic. But will that be enough . The uns humanitarian chief declares that northern ethiopia is in the grip of famine, after months of fighting in the countrys tigray region. Turn and final preparations are under way in the uk ahead of tomorrows Trooping The Colour at Windsor Castle to celebrate the queens 95th birthday
