This wants to establish itself across the uk but the fly in the ointment as far as what that wants to bring us is concerned is here, this waving weatherford. This feature here brought some heavy downpours and miserable Conditions Yesterday across some South Eastern parts of england. We do have some Mist And Fog patches in the South East up towards North Yorkshire as we had through this morning. That will all clear and then as you can see it brightens up across much of the country eyes to the west, here is the Weather Front introducing heavy showers across parts of england, after initially parts of england, after initially parts of england, after initially parts of North West of wales, it will move towards the east as we had through The Day. As we head through this morning and into this afternoon across Northern Ireland, some of the showers turning heavier. Still that Weather Front as i showers turning heavier. Still that weatherfront as i mentioned reaching up towards Northern Parts of scotland but it is a bit of a divide already because it to the east of that it is not a bad looking day. We will see some sunshine, looking good. But then to the west it is cloudy and miserable as the Weather Front continues to introduce not just thicker cloud Weather Front continues to introduce Notjust Thicker Cloud that Weather Front continues to introduce not just thicker cloud that also some patchy rain and heavy downpours as well. As we had through Tomorrow Morning first thing this is how it is looking. Lows between nine and 13 celsius. Claudia start tomorrow in prospect but whereas today the Western Parts have seen the Cloud And Rain, you can see it moving across to the east. West is best to tomorrow as far as the sunshine goes. Temperature was getting to about 21 celsius i think that sunny spells, as you can see, Northern Ireland, Northern Parts of england, watch out for some showers. Central and South Eastern parts we will see Claudia Conditions and some showers as well. Looking towards The End of the Day Tomorrow and into monday, High Pressure with the Weather Front and really wants to hang on in there. Its one of the most famous stories ever written. Its actually called travels into several remote nations of the world in four parts by colour, first a surgeon and then a captain of several ships. But you probably know it better as gullivers travels. What have we got here . 300 years after the book was written, im following in the footsteps of its author, Jonathan Swift, to the place that inspired him to write the novel in the first place. This is Belvedere House in county westmeath, bang in the centre of ireland. So the story goes Jonathan Swift was standing about here, looking across the lake where there is actually a place called lilliput and he thought, wow, those people in the distance are really small. And the rest is history i said why isnt there a giant gulliver here in Belvedere House . Paddy is a Music Management and a proprietor of several museums, hes rubbed shoulders with the likes of u2, Rem And Dame shirley bassey, and now he wants to make some icons of his own. We designed a beautiful statue in wood, larch wood, and we would build a Viewing Tower and inside would be a heritage centre, a museum, dedicated not just to Jonathan Swift but the writers of the county. That was where it started. It did not end there though, did it . We came up with the concept now, a statue that has a Matrix Skin and now weve just launched the giant project, which is the search for 21 sites to build 21 giants Around The World people of the world, welcome to the giant the giant will be an interactive Visitor Attraction centred around a huge human shaped Moving Structure with cafes, shops, and a museum, to boot, literally, at the boot the project is currently being masterminded at paddys residential Recording Studio Grouse lodge and it has caught the attention of eric, an opera director, music producer, Movie Maker and all round creative who wanted to make sure the statue could represent absolutely anybody. One of the possibilities was a gigantic statue, androgynous, and therefore with the led, not projected but actually revealed on it, it makes it a much more spectacular and transformable rather than a static image. What kind of shape did you end up going for . Essentially, it is an amalgamation of the facial shape of a man, a woman and a child. The Human Eye cheats, the Human Eye fills in so much thats not there. If you give it a hint, it will fill in an awful lot and that is part of what it is. Is it big enough, do you think . And bear in mind, this is only a small scale concept model. It will be covered with millions and millions of pixels of addressable leds. That is fed to controllers the more control you have over the leds, the greater Spectrum Variation you can have with colour, with intensity. We managed to get movement up to the sky, that is massive movement. These are 60, 80 foot long, weighing tonnes. If the giant is on top of the ground over the museum, youd need an acre. Interestingly, somebody in New York has been i on and they cant do it on airspace. I and that is really interesting. Airspace means they will put it on top i of an existing building. Because of covid, a lot of the citiesl are looking at how are they going to get tourism back, how are they going to get people back into their i countries and cities . What is the draw going to be . We think the technology that weve got will be the future of statues and there wontjust be an image of one person. We think that images will change as society changes. And in fact, the Image Paddy thinks would draw most attention is the image of you part of the Visitor Experience will involve getting your whole body scanned and then thrown up onto the statue for all to see. The world s most. Awe inspiring selfie you can look up and you will become the giant. You are calling this a whirl s biggest selfie. There is nothing like it on the planet. You cannot ignore it. It is so big, it is going to be gigantic. The poor, foolish little people, liquid you have done. With goliath ambitions, the giant company hopes to raise hundreds of millions of dollars and plans to roll out the first five by The End of this year. One thing . s for sure. The scope of that task will be enormous when i first heard about this project, i thought it was nuts. But then i got here and i saw the Scale Model of the head and i started to understand how it could work, and the technology needed to bring this to life is proven, itsjust coloured leds so may be the main question is whether people will want it . But living in the century of the selfie, though, so i kind of have a feeling they will. Now, if theres one thing i know about lj rich, its that she loves her thrills. Here she is on a Vr Roller Coaster from a few years ago, and so when we found out legoland add a new Flying Theatre Ride, well, there was only one person we could really send to find out how it works like many of us, i often dreamed of flying as a child. I think thats why i love Thrill Rides and Theme Parks secure the harness, forget your daily worries and simply escape into the sky for a few beautiful minutes. Oh, im going to crash this is the newly opened flight of the Sky Lion at legoland, the uks first Flying Theatre Ride and im lucky enough to be in before it opens to the public. Its like Virtual Reality without the headset. The only person on one of seven gondolas spread over three floors. The ultimate in social distancing. Its a wonderful and complex mix of creativity and technology. Behind the scenes, the Maintenance Team kindly put the ride into manual. When the ride starts, the Gondola Rotates towards and into a concave 20 metre high screen. Heres a Close Up of the motorised mechanics and action which are surprisingly quiet. There are three for each access, allowing for a 30 degree swing, a 23 Degree Pitch and three degrees of your, thats left and right. During the ride fragrant mist is spread from on board canisters so we can smell the Air Or Baby Lava Dragon burps. Its clear how much the video, Lighting And Music add to the atmosphere. The site, the sound, the smell, the movement, the music to me, as overwhelming as it is, i know how the Technology Works but even knowing how it works, it works on my body, physically, in a way that is quite astounding. Inside the control room, the Ride Operator monitors the gondolas precise movements, and theo is one of those responsible for working out exactly how it is moving and when. On the computer first we would understand where those peaks are and where those drops are. And we would programme that in and then we would essentially go for a ride and we would film that ride and also speak whilst were riding it and we have a Big Digital Metre on the ride so we could say, at two minutes ten, we need to bring this movement back. Or we need to exaggerate, that big drop, that three minute ten, we have to bring that forward. The Video Creators also need to have intimate knowledge of how the right moves. One of the first things we start with is what we call the ride envelope, what are the degrees of motion, forward, back, the pitch and roll, things like that. All of those kind of mechanical, engineering things are built into the way we work with our camera. Even though the right envelope might be we trick the brain into five, we perceive those down, if we continue the camera further down, and slow down the way the seed goes down and speed up the camera, you have the sense that you are going much faster than you may actually be or you may be going at a super rate of descent, so its understanding the mechanical Engineering Side of it and how we actually trick the brain. Outside, the sculptures hold 1. 76 million lego bricks. Theyre hybrid lego animals which move when you access them through the app, i kind of Augmented Reality Contactless Safari and post coronavirus, they are optimistic people will return even though some of us are still risk averse. The last year has been challenging with the Pandemic-and-weve'>Pandemic And Weve had to have a number of measures in place such as social distancing so we reduced the amount of people coming in in the first place. This is a man who has just won the italian title with Inter Milan. A very successful manager with many ways, he was very successful with juventus. They were looking forward to having somebody like him come in, but apparently it stalled because of money he wants from new players, a lot of new managers coming and want to stamp the identity of the team, spend a lot of money. Lots of clubs just dont have that at the moment due to many issues, mainly the Pandemic. We will see what happens with tottenham, the search goes on. The former chelsea and Inter Milan boss had looked set to replaceJose Mourinho at spurs, but discussions have ended and we understand theres no prospect of them resuming. Its nearly seven weeks since mourinho was sacked, with tottenham also failing to lure former Boss Mauricio Pochettino back from paris st germain. Former World Champion hurdler Dai Greene says his attempt to qualify for this summers olympics is being hampered by coronavirus restrictions. If im being totally honest, i think my chances of getting slimmer all the time. The competition i had in france was, you know, perfect weather, but i wasnt there. The one in switzerland was a bit of a wreck, again, inaudible. Im pretty much just relying on the british champs again, in a month, hoping ita washout. Its Derby Day at Epsom And Frankie dettori will be hoping to carry on his good form from yesterday where he claimed victory in the oaks 27 years after his first win in the classic. Have you ever felt a Bit Hangry so hungry that you become angry . A new study suggests its notjust humans who turn irritable between meals. A team of scientists at Oxford University and the university of East Anglia found that male Fruit Flies can become increasingly aggressive when they dont have enough food. Well, ive been researching start looking at this . Well, ive been researching aggression i start looking at this . Well, ive been researching aggression in| start looking at this . Well, ive i been researching aggression in Fruit Flies, because actually, Fruit Flies show quite a lot of aggression. It probably wouldnt have thought of it, because they are just small little flies that dont look that violence. But for males, they start off with low intensity behaviour, like fencing Each Other, where they will poke Each Other with their legs, that they will chase Each Other, and they lunge at Each Other, where they raised their upper Body And Thrust at their opponent. And by studying aggression in Fruit Flies, which are quite easy to study in a lab, it is quite easy to manipulate the different conditions they are subjected to come you can find out more about the aggression that could be applied to other species, such as larger animals and even humans. Tiara. Larger animals and even humans. Now, on the face of larger animals and even humans. Now, on the face of it, larger animals and even humans. Now, on the face of it, the larger animals and even humans. Now, on the face of it, the only larger animals and even humans. Now, on the face of it, the only thing i would say, and you are the expert here, is that, isnt that the case with all creatures . If they get hungry and they need food, they might get more aggressive . Isnt thatjust a given . Brute might get more aggressive . Isnt thatjust a given . Thatjust a given . We thought, potentially, if they really needed food, they hadnt had it for a while, then they might be more motivated to fight over food. But equally, if they havent eaten for a while, they could become weaker, less likely to engage, wanting to conserve energy. Or maybe they could become more aggressive and then aggression drops Food Deprivation increases. We have a few different ideas. ,. , ,. ,. , ideas. How would this research of ours be ideas. I look at my invisible watch. Lets have a look at the weather. Good morning. Many of us will see something a little bit like that today, not everywhere, though, that is what we have in some places this morning. Very misty and very murky for some of us. A miserable day for some of us across South Eastern parts of england. Brightening up with sunny spells on offer as we head through the morning. Lets look at the headline today. Sunny spells, dry for most of us, but not for everyone, because we have this benefit off to the west. There it is. This is introducing thicker cloud of some patchy rain as well. Down here we have this area of High Pressure which really wants to build. As the Weather Front bumps into doubt it will kind of fizzle out and lose a lot of its energy. That said, it will still produce outbreaks of rain and some showers from the South West of england and Western Parts of scotland initially, then up towards Northern Parts of scotland as well. Some of these downpours will become rather heavy as we head through The Day, potentially the rumble of thunder, but the mitch Mist And Fog patches that we see up towards East Yorkshire and North Yorkshire will fizzle out. Top temperatures reaching 22 or 23 celsius in the best about sunshine. Further west we still have that cloud, we still have some drizzle, and we still have showers as well. But the Weather Front is on the move. Very slowly it will tremble its way across towards the east today, so then we will start to see some clear spells developing behind it as we head through tonight. Still heavy downpours across South Western parts, becoming quite murky here as well as we go through this evening. There we go, there are the lows for tonight, between nine and i3 celsius. While many of us have seen some sunshine first thing this morning, they will be more Cloud On Offer Tomorrow Morning, but you can see sunny spells across Northern Ireland, Northern Parts of england, up ireland, Northern Parts of england, up through scotland, showers developing later. And i think about today in prospects for Western Parts, North Western parts of wales, where it is quite miserable this morning with that cloud and some Rain Showers as well. Top ten pictures tomorrow, really quite similar to today, everyone. 22 or 23 celsius. That willjust similar to today, everyone. 22 or 23 celsius. That will just about do similar to today, everyone. 22 or 23 celsius. That willjust about do it. Now, as we look towards monday, there is the higher Pressure Plonked across the uk now. But we still have this well defined which is in turn bringing cloud and showers as well, this is another way frontjust wanting to push into parts of Northern Ireland, really strengthening around but as well, top temperatures of 22 celsius, that On Monday. Temperatures rising a bit as we head through this coming week and it is a story of sunny spells and it is a story of sunny spells and scattered showers. Its time now on breakfast for this weeks Film Review. Hello, and welcome to the Film Review with me mark kermode. Rounding up the best new movies available in cinemas and in the home. Last week, william friedkin, director of the exorcist, considered by many to be the scariest movie ever made, tweeted a quiet place 2 is a classic horror film. Adding simply that cinema is back. Thats quite an endorsement and, im happy to report, one that i broadly share. Run. After a Nail Biting prologue that plays out on Day One of the alien invasion, a quiet Place Part two picks up where the previous film left off with emily blunt, Millicent Simmonds and noahjupe as the survivorfamily with a newborn baby trying to make their way in a world where any sound can be deadly. This time theyrejoined by cillian murphys emmett, an old friend whos lost everything and does not see any point in trying to rEach Others. At least initially. Most people had finally given up hope. The original a quiet place film, Written By Bryan Woods and scott beck, took around 314 Million, not bad for a movie that cost only 17 Million to make. No wonder the studio were desperate for a sequel. But having originally rejected the idea, Directorjohn Krasinski changed his mind after writing a script based around Millicent Simmondss character. The daughter whose deafness makes are ideally placed to survive in a world of silence. A Rising Star who had a break out role in todd hayness wonderstruck, simmonds is terrific in this surprisingly effective sequel, leading the fight against the aliens, holding the key to their weak spot. Meanwhile, Blunt And Jupe are left holding the baby, literally. Taking cover in a deserted factory as the monsters who hunt by sound continue to stalk the planet. I still have vivid memories of seeing a quiet place in a packed cinema when it first opened in 2018, and watching the Moviesilence A potentially noisy audience, leaving everyone holding their breath. Thats a very hard act to follow, but Writer Director Krasinski and his superb Production Team do a genuinely impressive job of maintaining and building upon the tension of the original. Its ok. We are ok, we are ok. Thats dad, Thats Dad, Thats Dad where, where, where . From the opening with its elegantly choreographed Tracking Shots and Popcorn Jump scares, to a finale that deftly enter cuts disparate showdowns, this is excellently executed crowd pleasing Cinema Tailor made to be enjoyed on the big screen. A quiet Place Part two is in cinemas now and i recommend you go and see it. Just remember to turn off your mobile phone. From the Nail Biting to the Heart Wrenching with land, the directorial debut from robin wright. Whos on Screen Career has ranged from starring roles in the Princess Bride and Forrest Gump to becoming one of tv s highest paid actresses as Claire Underwood in house of cards. Edee, how are you feeling right now . What are you feeling . That its really difficult to be around people. Because they just want me to be better. In land, she plays a City Woman who retreats to a lonely cabin in the mountains of wyoming in the wake of a personal tragedy. She wants to be away from people, but is unable to survive alone in the wild until demian bichir s Fellow Traveller conveniently arise out of nowhere, agreed to teach of the tricks of the trade whilst respecting her privacy and allowing her to continue her solo voyage of personal discovery. Which is handy. Why are you helping me . You were in my path. Hey little girl is your daddy home. Dripping with earnest intentions and full of photogenic wilderness vistas, land is a clearly heartfelt but frankly rather boring and cliched portrait of grief. Played out on a big canvas, perhaps, but still strangely small in terms of invention, wit and artistry. Wright, who is usually a terrific actor, plays most of the scenes with an expression pitched somewhere between winsome despair and trapped wind. As if willing the audience to care about her character without giving them much reason to do so. Im here because i choose to be. There are clear echoes of into the wild, filmed back in 2007 by wrights former partner Sean Penn. Although land has little of the Narrative Grit which underwrote that real Life Story of retreat from civilisation. Instead, it settles for an altogether cheesier portrait of the survivalist life. Spiced up by the occasional appearance of a Grizzly Bear and a recurring gag about 80s pop hits. But other than that, offering not much to write home about. Still, the views are nice. You can enjoy them in cinemas now. Ever since Donnie Darko became the first Cult Hit of the 21st century, there have been plenty of movies that have attempted to replicate its smart Cinema Mix of teen angst, Time Travel and psychotherapeutic fantasia. From the butterfly effect, which was dubbed Donnie Darko for stupid people, to s darko, the sequel that nobody wanted and everyone disowned, these films have tended to disappoint. So it was with a degree of trepidation that i approached flashback a Darkoesque Oddity that played the Sitges Fantasy Horror festival last year under its original title, the education of fredrick fitzell. 0k, can either of you guys honestly tell me you ever remember seeing cindy after that night . We gotta go back. We gotta go back, we got to try to remember what happened to her that night. Maze Runner Star Dylan obrien is fred, a troubled young man whose boring corporate life unravels when the meeting with an old School Friend leads him back into the past. I do remember cindy williams, she just vanished. Maika monroe, who made such an impact in the 2014 chiller it follows, is cindy, the girl who disappeared some years ago after a night on the mysterious new drug mercury. I dont take it to be like them. As fred struggles to remember what happened that night, so his Audit Adult life is overtaken by the half remembered dreams of youth and high school. Of the lives he could have lived and it may indeed be living. Fred. Written and directed by christopher macbride, flashback lifts a central rift from the matrix, brushes shoulders with the recent time Travel Drug Movie synchronic, which was shot around the same time, and owes passing debts to everything from rianjohnson s brick, to Richard Kellys Cult classic. Yet despite being derivative, its also better than youd expect with macbride pulling off some impressive visual coups, while obrien does a convincing job of portraying a man caught in a Quarter Life Crisis drawn back constantly into the past. Im not even here right now not all of the ideas land, but this indie spirited oddity is not afraid to take a few risks, and frankly its all the better for it. Flashback is on digital platforms now. From fantasy to reality, with gunda, an extraordinary documentary about Farmyard Animals focusing on the titular sow. Squealing. Over the course of the film, we see Gunda Suckling and raising a batch of young piglets, watching them grow all without the aid of explanatory captions or narration, or emotive music to tell us how to feel. Theres nothing anthropomorphic or sentimental about the film which includes footage of good understanding on one of her brood, oblivious to its squeals. Yet its impossible to watch these creatures without becoming acutely aware of their consciousness, and thus inevitably questioning what we know will happen to them. Russian director viktor kossakovsky, who became a vegetarian after befriending a pig as a child that was then served up as pork cutlets, says he wanted to make a film about animals as living, feeling beings in their own right, a task he says was doubly difficult when dealing with Farm Livestock rather than dolphins, elephants or pandas. Yet viktor kossakovsky, on Whichjoaquin Phoenix gets yet gunda on which Joaquin Phoenix gets an executive producer credit, makes for remarkably powerful experience presented in strikingly intimate monochrome images that caused there will be Blood Director Paul Thomas Anderson to hail it as pure cinema stripped to its essential elements. When youve watched the film which contains one of the most memorable final shots ive ever seen, youll know exactly what he means. Gunda is in cinemas now. Ill leave you with news of after love, the tale of cross cultural secrets and lies that went down a storm at last years London Film festival. Did you convert when you married . Yes. How do you feel about wearing it . I dont feel. I dont. Ive worn it longer than i havent. It must have been hard to take all that on. Back then, i did something for my husband that No One Else could. Joanna Scanlan Stars as mary, a white english muslim who converted many years ago to marry ahmed with whom she lives near the dover cliffs. Ahmeds work takes him back and forth across the channel to calais, but when he dies Suddenly Mary discovers that her husband had another hit in life in france, a revelation that causes her to question her own Life Choices and her place in the world. Im confused, you are here for the cleaning . Written and directed by aleem khan, making his feature debut, after love is a moving and engaging drama in which everyone appears to be playing a role, maintaining a public facade that keeps their true selves hidden. As the often silent lead, scanlan is superb, saying more with her expressive eyes and words ever could. Allowing us to watch mary discovering herself even as the world crumbles around her. Built around carefully framed images with mirrored motifs highlighting the theme of duality, this film is a low key piece with a hefty emotional punch aided by an atmospheric score by Chris Roe that perfectly accompanies the gradual revelations. After love is in cinemas now. Thats it for this week, thanks for watching the Film Review, stay safe and shh. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast, with Naga Munchetty and charlie stayt. 0ur Headlines Today Testing is ramped up as the uk sees the highest number of new covid infections in two months, putting more Question Marks over the relaxation of restrictions. Lets get more from our political correspondent Helen Catt whos in our london newsroom. Good morning, helen. So, i mean, discussions aboutJune 21 have been going on for quite a long time, but there are metrics now which are becoming clearer, which will undoubtedly be part of that equation. Yes, so what ministers have consistently been saying is that it is simply too early at this stage to make a Decision Onjune 21 and they are looking at the data, we know what they have been looking but in the past, they have got these four tests which the country has to meet to move to the next step. They are looking at the medical data on that. What they have also consistently said is that so far, there is nothing about data they have seen to suggest during 21 Cannot Go ahead. That has consistently been the Message Right up until matt hancock, health secretary, was saying it yesterday. As well as the medical data, the other thing the government is doing is a review of social distancing measures, so, looking at things like how long the one Metre Plus Rule should stay in place, how long we should wear masks, how long we should be working from home. That is all being looked at as well. The government has not yet announced the outcome of that. All this stuff is in the mix at the moment, the date we have been given for when this might be discussed more publicly as june 1a. I think we have a wire more yet to know if anything is going to be different. Yet to know if anything is going to be different coronavirus restrictions have eased for millions of people across scotland from this morning. Glasgow has moved down to level two, which means socialising in Each OtherS Homes is allowed, in limited numbers, and pubs can serve alcohol. But a planned relaxation across some other parts of the country has been delayed. Connor gillies reports. Preparing for pints inside the pub here in glasgow. Margarets Place Hasnt opened at all since october. Its been absolutely horrendous, horrendous for everybody. Hopefully all the regulars will be back, because we miss them. We miss them, so that will be great, thatll be absolutely brilliant, to see everybody. Here in scotlands biggest city, almost 600,000 people have been living under the strictest of restrictions for the longest period of time across the whole of the uk. Families havent been able to mix inside their homes for nine months. But this move from level three to level two makes that possible once again a major milestone. Im looking forward to going into my Nephews Community and spending time with my family and getting a Wee Drink and things like that. Itll be great, to see everybody again in the sunshine. A nightmare, an absolute nightmare. Weve really been struck the worst, really, in glasgow. So im looking forward to things opening up again and maybe getting back to a wee bit of reality. Weve got max here. Its level one here on The Farm in aberdeen, this Business A Magnet forfamilies now allowed to reopen this soft play inside. Its been 1a months since weve been able to open this soft play. Were not as weather dependent, we can increase our capacity a little bit and things like that, so, yeah, its a big boost for us as a business. Orkney has mostly been shielded from covid. It, like other scottish islands, dropping to level zero. Continued caution, though, still required. Its the Direction Of Travel thats really important. At the same time, weve got to be very conscious that we have more and more people coming here, and were really asking them to take a lateral flow test, and even our own community, going away and coming back again, just taking those tests to give us an extra degree of safety. Safety amid a difficult, fragile position. But as a new day begins, so does a new dawn on regaining many of our old freedoms. Connor gillies, Bbc News. Our Scotland Reporter Alexandra Mackenzie joins us now from glasgow. Alexandra, restrictions are easing, despite rising cases . It isa it is a very similar case in england . When you see rising cases, it brings these E Zines into doubt. Easings. It brings these ezines into doubt. Easinqs easings. Good morning. Yes, absolutely easings. Good morning. Yes, absolutely. You easings. Good morning. Yes, absolutely. You heard easings. Good morning. Yes, absolutely. You heard in easings. Good morning. Yes, | absolutely. You heard in connors piece, from midnight, restrictions were eased in many parts of scotland. But because of a rising number of cases here in scotland, restrictions, or the easing of restrictions, or the easing of restrictions, were paused and many other areas. Restrictions, were paused and many otherareas. Now, here in restrictions, were paused and many other areas. Now, here in glasgow The City has been living under the toughest of restrictions in the country for many months now. So, for the first time today, in eight months, people are going to be able to visit inside Each OtherS Homes, and also alcohol is going to be served inside pubs and restaurants for the first time in many months this, and cinemas will finally be able to reopen. But there is disappointment in other parts of scotland, across much of the central belt and that includes edinburgh, areas are going to have to stay in level two alongside glasgow, as some of those areas had thought they were going to be moving down into level one today, and The City of dundee is also going to have to remain in level two because of an increase in the number of cases. But other areas, a large geographical area of scotland that includes the highlands owned aberdeen, but will move into level one, and some of the islands will move into level zero. But life will move into level zero. But life will not be back to normal. Nicola sturgeon said yesterday, scotland is in a very fragile position. Alexandra, thank you. The former us president , donald trump, has been suspended from Facebook And Instagram for at least two years. His account had been blocked earlier this year, after he was accused of inciting violence in relation to the riots on capitol hill, but an internal review criticised the indefinite ban. Mr trump said the ruling was an insult to every person who voted for him. Children in scotland aged between seven and nine years old will be entitled to Free School Meals from the start of the new academic year. The Scottish Government says its free Lunch Policy will benefit 90,000 children. Its also extending its School Holiday Support for children from low income households. A year long celebration of culture in coventry will begin today, with an online event highlighting The Citys musical and multicultural heritage. There will be Pop Up Performances thoughout The Day but people are being urged to watch from home. The Uk City of Culture Programme had been due to begin injanuary but was delayed due to the Pandemic. The number of people with coronavirus in the uk has risen by as much as two thirds in the past week. The Office For National Statistics says a growing number of cases are linked to the variant first discovered in india, now known as delta. But Hospital Admissions and deaths are down slightly compared to last week. Werejoined now by Chris Hopson from Nhs Providers, which represent Hospital Trusts in england. Thank you very much forjoining us this morning, this saturday morning. Do you want to just paint a picture for me in terms of admissions and treatment at the moment in hospitals in england . Treatment at the moment in hospitals in encland . ~. ~. ,. , treatment at the moment in hospitals in encland . ~. , ~. , in england . What we know, as you have ust in england . What we know, as you have just said. In england . What we know, as you have just said, is in england . What we know, as you have just said, is that in england . What we know, as you have just said, is that the have just said, is that the Infection Rates due to the Delta Variant that originated in india has basically, the Infection Rates have been increasing in a number of different places. We know the hospitalisations, the rates of people coming into hospital in those areas are rising, but they are not rising very significantly. The bit i want to point interiors, effectively, if you look at the areas that were, in a sense, right at the front of this wave, so areas like bolton, what is interesting is that they have now got to the point where their Community Infections are starting to decline. So there has been a sort of early experimental actually, what would happen if you get this level of infection from this variant in that particular community . We think it is really interesting what has happened in bolton. If you actually look at the number of hospitalisations that We Saw in bolton in this phase, it actually peaked at around 50. Fascinatingly, if you compare that to november, there were around 170 people with covid 19 in bolton, and if you compared to january or february, there were 150 people with covid 19 in bolton. So much no much loweR Numbers. There is a second really important bit, and it is important that you dont miss stop you can just trade numbers. Is important that you dont miss stop you canjust trade numbers. But what is really interesting is that the team in bolton is saying that the team in bolton is saying that the people who came in this time around, be 50, were actually a lot younger, and they were less at risk of very serious complications, less at risk of death, and actually, what that means, is that there was less demand on critical care, so basically at all that together and it is an interesting story. In fact, what we think we can start to say now, based on that experience, from those who have been right at the front of this wave, is that it does look like the vaccines have kind of broken the chain between catching covid 19 and potentially being very, very seriously ill, and potentially dying. Very seriously ill, and potentially d in. ,. , very seriously ill, and potentially D Inc. ,. ,. , very seriously ill, and potentially dying one very seriously ill, and potentially dying. One extra | dying. Sorry, Go On. One extra oint, dying. Sorry, Go On. One extra point. What dying. Sorry, Go On. One extra point, what was dying. Sorry, Go On. One extra point, what was particularly point, what was particularly interesting is that there were very, very few people who had had double jabs and then actually been able to have that buildup of detection after those jabs, so all the clinical evidence said that a Vaccine Clinic were going to protect from this variant, and that is now the experience that is being proved on the ground. You are saying that it is more younger people presenting at hospital and they are not seriously ill. Why would they be at hospital . Because there is a difference between, you are right to pick me up on the definition. What we are saying is people, they were obviously serious enough to be in hospital but if you remember from the really distressing pictures We Saw in november, january and february, effectively lot we what we were having to do was put large numbers of people into critical care, give the Mechanical Ventilation and clearly the outcomes follow up to those patients were not, they actually ended up dying. What we are seeing this time is with numbers of younger patients, they are not serially ill. They are serious enough to going to hospital but not requiring critical care. LoweR Numbers requiring Mechanical Ventilation. What were saying is in a sense, hospitalisation this time doesnt necessarily equal the same severity of illness compared to the previous waves. As i said, it is difficult to be definitive but if you look at places like bolton, what people are clearly saying is that it does look like these vaccines are breaking that chain between if you catch the disease, high numbers of people coming into hospital and effectively being very seriously ill. ,. , ~. , effectively being very seriously ill. ,. ,. , ill. Looking at the data, there is concern about ill. Looking at the data, there is concern about the ill. Looking at the data, there is concern about the delta ill. Looking at the data, there is concern about the Delta Variant| concern about the Delta Variant which was first observed in india. How much of the impact of the Delta Variant has fed through in terms of Hospital Admissions . What variant has fed through in terms of Hospital Admissions . Variant has fed through in terms of Hospital Admissions . What we know is that this is going Hospital Admissions . What we know is that this is going to Hospital Admissions . What we know is that this is going to become Hospital Admissions . What we know is that this is going to become the that this is going to become the dominant variant. This seems pretty clear now. What we are saying seeing is in a sense it is starting to spread across the country into different places and we are hearing every day or places where the variant is becoming present and what we are then doing in those areas is obviously doing as we should do because if the vaccines offer protection, what we are seeking to do is surge vaccinated in those areas and try to get as many people vaccinated as possible. As i said, and you have seen lots we have had lots of epidemiologists coming onto this programme saying look, look, this is spreading rapidly and they are right and clearly it will spread even faster if we removed all of the restrictions on social Contact Onjune the 21st but the issue, i think, Contact Onjune the 21st but the issue, ithink, and Contact Onjune the 21st but the issue, i think, and this is the whole point about the vaccines, was were they going to break that train between if you caught covid 19, did you see high numbers of people dying from it and potentially very seriously ill coming into hospital . What were saying here is in the areas that are absolutely at the of that way, that chain does appear to be broken and that feels very significant to us. In be broken and that feels very significant to us. Be broken and that feels very significant to us. In terms of the significance. Significant to us. In terms of the significance, obviously significant to us. In terms of the significance, obviously looking l significant to us. In terms of the | significance, obviously looking at the various tests in terms of easing of restrictions, one of those is looking at Hospital Admissions and making sure that the nhs is not overwhelmed or overrun with more admissions, do you think, how do you feel in terms of Thisjune Date and this caution around it now, do you think that if you are just looking at how hospitals are coping and how Nhs Staff are coping, you are fine with that full opening up of society . With that full opening up of socie . ~. with that full opening up of socie . ~. , society . What were saying is, in essence, society . What were saying is, in essence. You society . What were saying is, in essence, you have society . What were saying is, in essence, you have a society . What were saying is, in essence, you have a Tick Society . What were saying is, in essence, you have a tick yes society . What were saying is, in. Essence, you have a tick yes column and a question mark column. In the text column, what we got were these early trust at the front of the way where if you look at the experience, what they had gone through and if we can go and be as confident as we can, that will be replicated in other communities as The Virus, this variant spreads. That would give you a degree of confidence that the Nhs Wont be overwhelmed. That is the big, big teak in that column. On the other hand, you do have to recognise there is serious risk here and we do know this Delta Variant is severely more transmissible and there are a lot of people that still need to be vaccinated and we also know that the nhs is busy. What we would say, naga, is in the previous lockdowns, we absolutely have had to do them because there was no choice, we had to do them to ensure that the nhs wasnt overwhelmed. I think the decision this time feels significantly more finely balanced because we know, we hopefully have broken the chain but we know there is more risk here. , that we do need to weigh against opening things up. The other thing that i think we would say is the thing that we are a bit nervous about is the sense that this debate is either it is all or nothing. There are some people out there saying whatever happens we must go ahead with everything and people out there say absolutely, in the name of caution, we cant do anything, and i think we need a more subtle and monuments debate. I suspect where we may end up on during the 21st is that maybe some things that are lower risk where we say yes we can go ahead but others where we say actually, look, this is too high risk at this point. And we may, for example, make a decision that we absolutely want to ensure that we absolutely want to ensure that everybody who might be clinically vulnerable has actually only got their double jab but has also had the 2 three weeks to build up also had the 2 three weeks to build up the full protection because again, that is what chief executives are saying to us. It is very striking the people who have actually notjust had one jab, not just had to jabs, but have actually had the 2 three weeks to build up the protection, they are seen very, very small numbers of those and so we still know there are people who are clinically vulnerable who will not have gone through that process by the 21st ofjune. So i think we need a more sophisticated debate rather than saying lets go ahead with everything or know, we cant do anything and actually work out where the risk truly lies. The risk truly lies. Chris, take you very much the risk truly lies. Chris, take you very much. Chris the risk truly lies. Chris, take you very much. Chris hopkins, the risk truly lies. Chris, take you very much. Chris hopkins, chief l very much. Chris hopkins, chief executives of Nhs Providers. Take care. Heres owain with a look at this mornings weather. The skies in the northwest this morning, rather beautiful morning. It is not like that everywhere, im afraid. We do have patchy rain, a couple of showers as well and some Mist And Fog patches. It is looking a bit like this for some of us this morning but you know, if it is a bit misty and murky where you are, maybe southern and South Eastern parts, it will brighten up and we will see some sunshine. There is a headline for today, looking good, sunny bells, dry foremost. Not everyone seeing the sunny weather. Looking at this Weather Front, this swirly thing. That is introducing the thick cloud and showers and patchy rain. The High Pressure you can see here is trying to build and establish itself across the uk and that generally leads to more and unsettled conditions. It doesnt quite get there and fulfilling all of it. The Weather Front is here from South Western parts of england, west wales, Northern Ireland and then curves around scotland, introducing patchy rain with a few heavy downpours here. I do think it will be quite grey and murky across South Western parts of england, west wales, through North West wales as well, moving towards the east. Some heavy potentially thundery downpours through Western Parts of scotland. A few dotted around Western Parts of scotland i think. But to the east of that Weather Front, that is where we will see the sunshine, brightening up will see the sunshine, brightening up and we will see the sun is well through this morning and into the afternoon not looking good through the midlands, not looking too bad, i should say, across the midlands, Northern Parts of england as well. The Weather Front is moving towards the east, taking the cloud with it as we move through this evening. They are the Lows Tonight between nine and 13 celsius. I think Tomorrow Morning, we are opening the curtains, looking out died, thing a bit more in the way of Cloud Cover across the uk but a brighter start to The Day across much of wales and scotland, whereas the Weather Front will introduce a thicker cloud across southern and central parts of england, showers as well, 20 or 21 celsius are our top temperatures tomorrow, i think. Celsius are our top temperatures tomorrow, ithink. The celsius are our top temperatures tomorrow, i think. The High Pressure i mentioned earlier ron is still trying to build as we cast an eye upOn Monday but you notice this Weather Front which will continue to introduce some cloud, a few showers as well and behind me, you can see another weak Weather Front moving in. As it meets the High Pressure, it kind of loses a lot of its energy, if you like, should be a mostly dry day across much of the uk but watch out the heavy showers. Top temperatures in monday reaching to 22 or possibly 23 celsius. We have seen some sunny spells over the past couple of days and i think we will hang onto that feel as we move towards this coming week as well. We are drawing in warmer airfrom the south as well so i think that temperature, reaching 20 21 for many of us. Call the further north. A lot of us. Call the further north. A lot of cloud looking quite looking quite monochrome on the outlook but lots of us will see if bit of a sunny sky but there are showers around as well. I will keep you posted, of course. That is how it is looking, both. A celebration will be held in Coventry Today to mark the launch of the uks city of Culture Programme. The regulator, which looks at the safety of medicine, has done a full review of medicine, has done a full review of the Pfizer Vaccine 412 15 Year Olds. We have already seen a big study within the donor vaccine, which showed there were no new side effects in younger people and it was effective. Now the Pfizer Vaccine has shown the same thing. So the nhra has approved it, which means the dhs sea, the department of health and social care, is asking the jcvi, the health and social care, is asking thejcvi, Thejoint Health and social care, is asking thejcvi, the joint committee on vaccination and immunisation, weather they will be recommending that routinely, 12 to 15 year olds are vaccinated. So we dont have a decision there yet, but it has been approved as safe and effective. find approved as safe and effective. And the reason this is so important is, there have been a number of places and occasions where it is thought that there are certain age groups, and it is among younger people, they are significant carriers of coronavirus, and the Infection Rates are growing may be more in some of those age groups . Is that right . Thats absolutely right. And of course children and young people are very good at mixing and older teenagers, particularly, sort of 1116 teenagers, particularly, sort of 11 16 year old secondary school children, they appear to be at much greater likelihood of passing The Virus on them very small children, which seems a bit counterintuitive because, you know, primary school kids are much worse at social distancing. But actually, it seems that the way teenagers pass on The Virus or catch it is much more similar to the way that adults do, and therefore there seems to be a real indicator, especially in some of those areas, certainly at the start of the second wave, that it was secondary school which was driving the change. So although children, young people, are exceptionally unlikely to become really unwell with it, long covid does happen and can be really debilitating. But they are highly unlikely to die or need Hospital Admission for it. They may well reduce the risk of transmission, which of course is really important for the whole of society. {line which of course is really important for the whole of society. Which of course is really important for the whole of society. One of the big question for the whole of society. One of the big question is. For the whole of society. One of the big question is, of for the whole of society. One of the big question is, of course, for the whole of society. One of the big question is, of course, sarah, l big question is, of course, sarah, is that you go through the different age groups, concentrating on those people right now, the take up rate has dropped with each age category, so the oldest and most vulnerable people where the highest, which is good, obviously, but as we have come down the age groups, that percentage of people who come forward for the java is dropping . It is of people who come forward for the java is dropping . Java is dropping . It is dropping, but actually. Java is dropping . It is dropping, but actually. It java is dropping . It is dropping, but actually, it is java is dropping . It is dropping, but actually, it is dropping but actually, it is dropping remarkably little under the circumstances. We managed to Vaccinate Half of all people in their 30s, Vaccinate Half of all people in their30s, injust Vaccinate Half of all people in their 30s, injust a two Vaccinate Half of all people in their 30s, in just a two Week Period, excluding of course those people who are vulnerable or clinically vulnerable who could already be vaccinated. So yes, it is dropping, but we do know that if we have got the vast majority of older people, well over 90 of over 50s, certainly over 60s vaccinated, that will account for an enormous tranche and that will get us a long way towards herd immunity. The only question we do need to be taking into account, though, is the bigger one, which is weather these vaccines are better put towards young people in this country or contributed towards the drive to vaccinate the whole world, because while there is an altruistic element to that, there is also a selfish one, which is that if we vaccinated the whole world, then the likelihood of more delta viruses, or viruses emerging out of nepal or out of brazil or out of South Africa, which could be resistance to vaccines, is going to be smaller. Resistance to vaccines, is going to be smaller resistance to vaccines, is going to be smaller. ,. ,. , ,. , be smaller. Sarah, i am assuming you aet all be smaller. I am very much Urging Caution, out of the situation, especially in portugal, On Monday morning, i think there are going to be a lot of people who will be thinking otherwise when they me in my surgery, because we know that portugal was on the green list, it only stayed there for three weeks, and we also know that a lot of people in portugal were saying, why . Well, the R Number in portugal is 1. 7. It is 1. 0 1. 2 in the uk, well, the R Number in portugal is 1. 7. It is 1. 0 1. 2 in the uk, and we are really worried about that because we have seen this probably 75 increase in the past week. It is difficult to know, because there is a lot of margin for error, in those increases with the ons pilot survey. But yes, it is 1. 7, we know that the relatively low numbers at the moment, 60 200,000, but lets not forget that in september last year we were turning people, pulling people back from france, requiring them to quarantine, because we got to 20 out of 100,000. Welcome to newswatch with me, samira ahmed. The indian variant or the delta why it matters and what the latest strain of the covid 19 virus is called. And on the hottest day of the year, one unusually attired News Presenter is caught short by a wide shot in the studio. There has been some worry over the past couple of weeks in political and medical circles over the spread of a certain covid 19 variant in some areas of the uk. This is how up until the past few days its been referred to. News reports the Scottish Government has extended level three restrictions in glasgow for another week because of concerns about cases of the indian variant. The infections have climbed over the three weeks to 135 Cases per 100,000. Mostly thought to be the indian variant. In or out of areas in england where the indian variant is spreading. The scientific term for the variant is b. 1. 617. 2 and some people would have preferred that slightly less snappy name to be used. Epidemiologists explains why. The indian government also criticised the use of the term and in response earlier this week the World Health Organization came up with some new names. Alpha for the kent variant, beta for the South African, gamma for the brazilian and delta for the indian. But that elicited this response from a viewer called mike. We asked Bbc News about this and they told us. As of the past few days, bbc reporters have mostly been using this rather cumbersome formulation. Testing to track the variant identified in india now known as delta continues and its still not clear how fast it spreads. But the use just of the term indian variant is still slipping through the bbc s net as can be seen from these website headlines from the past few days. One viewer spotted this and wrote to us on thursday. What should the variant be called and does it matter . We can hear the view of a medical student who got in touch with us recently about this issue. Thank you for coming on newswatch. Why are you so concerned with what the bbc we can hear the view of a medical student who got in touch with us recently about this issue. Thank you for coming on newswatch. Why are you so concerned with what the bbc calls this variant . I dont see the need for the origin of the variant to be of any concern for the general public. The general public needs to know there is a new variant and they need to be more vigilant but they dont need to know where it came from. Thats not of any use to them. Thats of the use of the government to apply these new travel restrictions. The general publicjust needs to know they need to be more careful. And its the Governments Job to know where it came from. So thats the first reason, its just unnecessary. The more pressing reason is i think because its the serious risk of racism that could occur because of this and i think we have already seen a threefold increase in hate crime against people of asian origin over the past year because of so many high profile figures Around The World insisting on calling the original strain of The Virus the China Virus or the Wuhan Virus and i think its completely unnecessary so i think weve already seen this happen once and i think continuing to call it the indian variant, were just risking the same Racism And Hate crimes, violent hate crimes, occurring against a whole new group of people which could definitely be prevented. The bbc has started referring to it as the variant first discovered in india to make it clear what the Delta Variant, the new name, is referring to. Is that any better . I think thats certainly true that the who said lets call it the Delta Variant and the bbc is trying to change that but less than 20 hours ago We Saw another headline from the bbc when they headline was called the indian variant and then further down in the article they referred to it as the Delta Variant and i actually think thats completely understandable because if suddenly we make the switch to Delta Variant, people are not going to know what the Delta Variant means and that might cause panic because they might think this is a whole new variant. I think its going to be hard to make that switch but my personal opinion is that the bbc and the general public figures should have already noticed this, they know there are these hate crimes against people of asian origin and they should have foreseen this is very possible if we continue to call it the indian variant and although the who only said it now that they should be calling it the Delta Variant, its always been the who position that we should not be associating places with The Virus or variants. Weve already seen that. Who reaffirmed this in a tweet on 12th May and we have seen india themselves, the ministry of information, request that its not called the indian variant and we have seen Nicola Sturgeon stop calling it the indian variant almost two weeks ago because she foresaw that this could lead to hate crimes so i think the bbc might be trying now but this is too little and its too late. To be really practical on what is a complicated and changing story of covid 19, people know it as the indian variant and removing all reference to the geography might mean they dont necessarily know whats being talked about. In a sense its fair enough to keep a reference back to it . That could just be said in the news that theres a new variant and it could have been called by the scientific name from the start and it could havejust been mentioned that it come from india but again, i think this direct association where its in common use, if you go to a shop, hairdrsser, were hearing people call it the indian variant and i think that direct association has become a household name, ijust think that was never necessary in the first place and i think we have seen the evidence and we have seen this increase in hate crimes occur against people of asian origin when the Pandemic first started and i think we are heading down the exact same route by using the term indian variant and that should certainly be prevented. Thank you for coming on newswatch. The fallout from the Dyson Report into Martin Bashir s interview with Princess Diana is not over with news on thursday that matt wiessler, the graphic designer asked by the reporter to mock up fake bank statements, had received an apology from the bbc for the way he had been treated. The corporation is conducting an internal investigation into bashir s rehiring at the bbc in 2016 as religious Affairs Correspondent and said its findings would be made public this week. That has not happened. When we asked about it we were told. In the meantime, the whole subject is receiving plenty of attention in the newspapers with some reaction to director general tim davies revelation that Martin Bashir was still being paid as he worked out his three month notice period. Leslie mcintyre left us this message on the telephone with her reaction. I want to say how appalled i am that i am now having to pay a Licence Fee to pay Martin Bashir a salary to The End of august and possibly a pension. The bbc are very happy to hunt down politicians for misdemeanours, cover up their own. In a Radio Interview last week, tim davie justified the decision to accept Martin Bashir s resignation rather than sacking him by pointing to bashir s medical issues saying it allowed a clean break with no pay off and adding that this was not an honourable discharge. A subject i am sure we will be returning to. The inquiry into the deaths of 22 people at an Ariana Grande Concert in Manchester Arena four years ago will resume On Monday. Since it started last september it has heard some harrowing testimony. Last week there was evidence from one of the paramedics who attended the scene after the terrorist Attack And Bbc online report on the Days Hearing was headlined. Which incurred the wrath ofjoshua barker. He sent us this video. I was really disappointed with the Way Bbc chose to headline the piece about the paramedic who was first on scene at the manchester attack. It was a deliberately misleading and provocative headline and it was designed to generate shock and generate clicks and it risks bringing a person and a profession into disrepute. Triage Sort And Sieve is nationally recognised guidance in response to a major incident and the way the bbc headlined the piece shows real ignorance and substandard journalism around the topic. In addition to a redaction of the headline i believe an apology is owed. The headline was amended so that it read paramedic tales of bomb scene, and that was mentioned in the Bbc Statement we were given. It read. Finally, when the bbc first started delivering nightly broadcasts in the 1920s, the announcers had to wear a Dinner Jacket to read the news, even though of course, no one could see them. A century later, when youre Presenting Television News sitting down and behind a desk, it might seem similarly pointless to ensure that your bottom half is as well dressed as your top half, especially if its been hot outside all day but what about those roving studio cameras . Take a close look at News Presenter shaun ley, just after midnight on wednesday night. Hello and welcome to Bbc News, if you havejustjoined us. If you missed that brief wide shot of the studio, steve did not and helpfully sent us a screenshot along with this E Mail. You can find us on twitter. You can call us. Thats all from us, we will be back to hear your thoughts about Bbc News coverage again next week. Goodbye. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Naga Munchetty and charlie stayt. Our Headlines Today Testing is ramped up as the uk sees the highest number of new covid infections in two months, putting more Question Marks over the relaxation of restrictions. Lockdown is eased for around half of the people in scotland, which means they can socialise in Each OtherS Homes and drink alcohol in pubs. De Haut Door stage is set. On the bridge made we there is about to perform as coventry launches its year as Uk City of culture. Serena williams remains on course in the French Open. The 39 year old is through to the fourth round in paris as she chases a 24th Grand Slam title. And many others enjoying some sunny spells across the uk today, but there are some showers in the forecast. I will be back with all the details. Its Saturday 5th june. More Surge Testing is set to take place after the uk reported the highest daily coronavirus cases since march. Several areas, including parts of berkshire, kent and west yorkshire, are experiencing a rise in infections linked to the variant first detected in india now known as delta. Scientists are Urging Caution over plans to lift restrictions in england later this month. Helena wilkinson reports. Come on in. Thank you very much. With an increase in Infection Rates, nhs leaders are continuing to stress the message come forward to get your vaccine when youre called. It is the Delta Variant, first detected in india, which is causing problems. Public Health England says its now become the dominant strain in the uk. Where its been detected, Surge Testing has been taking place. From monday, residents in parts of Reading And Wokingham in berkshire will be urged to have a test as part of a two Week Programme. We know that the Delta Variant is circulating within our communities, and more so in very specific parts of our communities, and we would like to identify those early and to stop the progression of The Virus. The latest figures from across the Uk Show there were more than 6,200 new Coronavirus Infections in the last 24 hour period. That is the highest daily number of cases since The End of march. 11 deaths were recorded in the last 2a hours. Although Hospital Admissions are rising again in areas affected by the Delta Variant, on the whole they continue to remain low. What we think we can start to see now based on that experience from those who have been right at the front of this wave is that it does look as though the vaccines have kind of broken the chain between catching covid 19 and potentially being very, very seriously ill. And potentially dying. As the Vaccination Rollout continues, the Uk Regulator has approved the Pfizer Vaccine for 15 year olds. 1215 12 15 Year Olds. The Uks Vaccine Committee will decide whether they should be offered it. With a rise in Infection Rates, many in england are now asking what it means forJune 21. Thats when the government hopes to move to its final stage of its roadmap for lifting lockdown in england. Some are Urging Caution. What we have to make sure we do is learn the lessons from last year. Yes, we are in a different situation than we were last year, yes, we are in a different place, but what we learnt from that is how quickly things can change with covid, and that its much, much easier and wiser to make decisions when there are few cases than when there are many. The prime Minister And Health secretary say more data will be assessed next week before any final decisions will be made about restrictions being lifted in england. Helena wilkinson, Bbc News. Lets get more from our political correspondent Helen Catt whos in our london newsroom. How could all this impact that deadline of 21stjune, what is the government saying . Clarification expected on the 14th ofjune. That is what number expected on the 14th ofjune. That is what number ten expected on the 14th ofjune. Trust is what number ten sources are saying it is at the moment, speculation. As we have heard from ministers over the course of this week, what theyre seeing at the moment as it is simply too early to a decision on thatJune 21 date. They are watching the data as it comes in on a daily basis, they are looking for things like the impact of the variance you just heard about on hospitalisations. But what they have also been saying is that so far they have not seen anything in the data that suggests thatJune 21 could not be the date on which the step four of the Road Map goes ahead. So, the other thing they are doing as well as looking at the medical data and hospital data is they are undertaking a review of social distancing. Looking at things like how long the one Metre Plus Rule should stay in place and hospitality, how long we should keep wearing masks, how long people should keep working from home. The government has not announced the outcome of that yet either. That of course will have a huge bearing on what life looks like the summer. We are expecting, as you said, to your much more definite Information Probablyjust over a week and a half, on the 14th ofjune. Probablyjust over a week and a half, on the 14th ofjune. Thank you very much coronavirus restrictions have eased for millions of people across scotland from this morning. Glasgow has moved down to level two, which means socialising in Each OtherS Homes is allowed, in limited numbers, and pubs can serve alcohol. But a planned relaxation across some other parts of the country has been delayed. Our Scotland Reporter Alexandra Mackenzie joins us now from glasgow. There is a mixed picture for some people there will be welcome news about things using. Yes, that is exactly it, a bit of a mixed bag. From a night, restrictions were eased in some areas but that has been passed in other areas. There is concern about the rise in the number of cases which have at least tripled here in scotland in the last month. But here in glasgow, people have been living under the toughest of restrictions in the country for the last few months. That changed at midnight. For the first time in eight months, people here in The City of glasgow are going to be able to visit inside Each OtherS Homes. There will still be a very tough restriction on numbers, but no social distancing will be required. And you can also head inside a pub and have some alcohol for the first time in many months and go out for a Meal Tonight and have alcohol insight. Also cinemas have opened for the first time in many months. But other areas that were expecting to go down from level two to level one are disappointed today. Senior scientists and ministers are set to discuss giving the Pfizer Vaccine to children between the ages of 12 and 15, after approval was given by the uks regulatory body. As it stands, there is no routine vaccination of the under 18s in the uk, but thats not the case in other nations. Lets Ta Ke lets take you through what is happening elsewhere. In the us, more than more than 4 Million people under 17 have been vaccinated, with around 600,000 children receiving the jab in a week. In the eu, germany will begin its rollout of the Pfizer Vaccine for 12 to 16 year olds from monday. While in france, children over 12 can get theirjab from june 16th. Were joined now by professor anthony harnden, the Deputy Chair of Thejoint Committee on vaccination and immunisation. The jcvi as we thejcvi as we have come to know it. Good morning to you. Thank you very much. Do you want to take us through this Approvals Process for 12 15 Year Olds. This Approvals Process for 1215 yearolds this Approvals Process for 1215 earolds. , , yearolds. Clearly it is good news that the vaccine yearolds. Clearly it is good news that the vaccine has yearolds. Clearly it is good news that the vaccine has been yearolds. Clearly it is good news| that the vaccine has been approved for use. It gives us a lot of choice. However, these are difficult decisions. Children, in the mean, do not get severe illness due to covid. There are a very, very small minority that do, but the majority do not. For some young people, they may get long covid so we have got to look very clearly at the benefits to the children. There may be a benefit around education, particularly those at examination times, and of course children do not want to be off when they have examinations looming. There may be some benefits. I think the vast majority of benefit to children will be, will not be to children, it will be in direct benefit to adults in terms of preventing transmission and protecting adults who have not been immunised for whatever reason or have not responded to the vaccine. Therefore, that presents quite a lot of ethical dilemmas as to whether you should vaccinate children to protect adults. We will be thinking about those issues. About those issues. Sorry, can i ust ick about those issues. Sorry, can i just pick you about those issues. Sorry, can i just pick you up about those issues. Sorry, can i just pick you up on about those issues. When you say there are ethical dilemmas as to whether to vaccinate children, if it has been approved by the medical body, what is the ethical dilemma . ~. , medical body, what is the ethical dilemma . ~. , medical body, what is the ethical dilemma . , dilemma . Well, clearly it has been a roved dilemma . Well, clearly it has been approved by dilemma . Well, clearly it has been approved by the dilemma . Well, clearly it has been approved by the regulator, dilemma . Well, clearly it has been approved by the regulator, that dilemma . Well, clearly it has been approved by the regulator, that it | approved by the regulator, that it is a safe and effective vaccine, as regards the trial data that they have looked at. The purpose of the jcvi is to decide how vaccines are best enjoyed and who are the deployed to. Of course, we do know that trial data is only a few thousand individuals. We want to look internationally at other data to see whether there are any safety data emerging. When you immunise millions of children, in this case, there is a very different Safety Profile sometimes with rare events, adverse events that may be picked up from immunising millions of children. So we will look internationally at that data, as well. We want to be clear at the reasons why we are immunising children. We need to be absolutely sure that the benefits to them and potentially to society far outweigh any risks. Potentially to society far outweigh an risks. ,. , any risks. Have there been young children who any risks. Have there been young children who have any risks. Have there been young children who have been any risks. It is affected by covid . There are a minority of children. It is a affected by covid . There are a| minority of children. It is a very small minority of children that developed a hyperimmune response to covid and there are a number of young people that develop long covid. So it is a very, very small number. Covid is very much an age based risk profile. So the older you are, the more at risk you are. Children are much, much less at risk than adults for developing severe covid. But, yes, some children do. And obviously we will clearly look at that data as well. I think this is not an easy decision. There is the other wider ethical issue on whether you vaccinate children in this country or whether you donate that vaccine internationally to countries on low or middle income countries on low or middle income countries where they still have an at risk adult population that have not been vaccinated. A lot of issues to think about. But we will consider all these aspects. All these aspects. When you are considering all these aspects. When you are considering the all these aspects. When you are considering the balance all these aspects. When you are| considering the balance between vaccinating children and giving the vaccines to other countries, is that your decision . We do not your decision . Know, our decision will be. We do not make your decision . Know, our decision i will be. We do not make decisions, we give advice. What we will do as we give advice. What we will do as we will probably give the government a range of options and ministers will actually make those decisions in terms of who they vaccinate, if they decide to vaccinate any children at all. We will give them a range of options. Ok. Children at all. We will give them a range of options. Range of options. Ok, there are re orts, range of options. Ok, there are reports. As range of options. Ok, there are reports, as well, range of options. Ok, there are reports, as well, i range of options. Ok, there are reports, as well, i think range of options. Ok, there are reports, as well, i think it range of options. Ok, there are reports, as well, i think it is range of options. Ok, there are| reports, as well, i think it is the telegraph, that 25 and under is, people aged 25 years and under will be receiving the vaccine. Can you shed any light on that . Over 25 is, i correct that. Over £20 will be offered first doses from next week. That is good news. We have clearly set out a Priority Order List and our last Priority Group is 18 29 year olds. So the fact that we are moving now to that last Priority Group, the top end of that, is clearly good news. Itjust shows that the Vaccination Programme is moving at speed. One of the reasons it is moving at speed is because it is simple, easy to understand, and we have got good Vaccine Supply. As you know, we have now vaccinated more than 75 of the adult population with one dose, and more than 50 with two doses. Which is a tremendous achievement. But there are still a long way to go and there are still a long way to go and there are a lot of at risk individuals out there that still have not been vaccinated and we really want to reach out to those and get them vaccinated. Particularly with this transmissible variant, Delta Variant we have got at the moment, which is rapidly spreading throughout the country. With that in mind, there are also suggestions that the roll out for those over a0 who have already received one vaccination, instead of there being a 12 Week Gap, there would be an eight Week Gap, there would be an eight Week Gap, can you shed any light on that . We have not made this decision yet. It is a trade off between better short Term Protection and better long Term Protection. The longer you leave it, the better protection you get. In most of the under a0s at the moment, they will still have a longer than eight week, a shorter than eight Week Gap between their vaccinations. I do not think we have to make that decision just yet. We will have the next few weeks. At the moment, ouradvice will have the next few weeks. At the moment, our advice is to bring that second dose forward for those aged 50, and courts one to nine. Then we will look at Vaccine Supply in the under 50s and make a decision about whether we should bring that forward, based on the prevalence of the variant that is circulating at the variant that is circulating at the moment. This is a really difficult question because we do know from data from public Health England that leaving it to that 12 Week Period gives you a really strong and robust immune response to both the pfizer and the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine. And so it is very difficult. We would have to collect that data and have a look at it. The vaccines at the moment are licensed, the trial was done in pfizer based on between 3 5 weeks, and an Oxford Astrazeneca between baseline for weeks. I think realistically be sure to seek and leave the Oxford Astrazeneca from the data we have got is eight weeks. I think the pfizer maybe you could give it out three weeks. But we would need to look at that again very carefully. There will be a trade off on those people in that the longer that they have left it, the longer that they have left it, the better longer Term Protection. Of the better longer Term Protection. For two hungarian adventurers, kayaking over 1000 miles up one of europes longest rivers to raise awareness of pollution was going to be a big enough challenge on its own. But while on theirjourney on the danube, the couple spotted two rare white tailed eagles trapped in the water, at risk of drowning and came to their rescue, as our budapest Correspondent Nick Thorpe reports. I saw two very big wings in the middle of the river trying to fly away. I rescued him up on the kayak and i tried to separate them. Kayaking up the river danube, a hungarian couple spotted two rare white eagles clasped together at risk of drowning. While he carried out the first one, i was trying to catch the second one. Maybe it was younger. It was swimming in completely the other direction when i was trying to catch him. Claudia and richie came up with a plan to rescue the second eagle. We used the two kayaks and got in the way in front of him so he couldnt go in another direction, just on the kayak. One wing on one kayak, the other wing on the other kayak, so it learned. But getting them back to Shore Wasnt easy. Then they start to swim like a butterfly. Finally they got them both to safety. After rescuing the eagles, between bulgaria and romania, the couple continued their 2,850 Kilometre Journey upstream. From the delta on the black sea in romania to the black forest in germany. It will take more than three months. From winter into summer. Morning sunshine. Why are you paddling up the river . Both why not . They are trying to raise awareness of river pollution. I usually say that it is not the Serbians Rubbish or the Romanians Rubbish it is our rubbish, so we are all responsible. If youre going to remember anything from today, those pictures. More Surge Testing is being rolled out to areas where theres been an increase in cases of the Delta Variant of covid, which was first discovered in india. A two Week Testing Programme will begin On Monday in parts of Reading And Wokingham in berkshire. Werejoined now by meradin peachey, the director of public health for Berkshire West. Very good to speak to you. Thank you very much for your time. This must be a busy time for you. Can you give us a sense first of all of the scale of the problem that you have seen and youre trying address . Goad and youre trying address . Good morninu. And youre trying address . Good morning you and youre trying address . Good morning. You are and youre trying address . Good morning. You are right, and youre trying address . Good morning. You are right, it and youre trying address . Good morning. You are right, it is and youre trying address . Good morning. You are right, it is a i and youre trying address . limp. Morning. You are right, it is a very busy time for us. Public health, people like me, we are busy. We have noticed the Delta Variant in berkshire, particularly in Reading And Wokingham since may. We have been able to track most of them to travellers or contact with travellers, but what has happened in the last couple of weeks or in the last week, we have noticed that in a lot of cases that are coming through, we cannot link them to any travellers. It now means we have community transmission. In discussion with some of our local schools, we had some outbreaks. What we realised is that the schools on the problem, it is actually parents, household transmission, mostly young people. It is really virtually nobody over 60 or anybody who has been vaccinated. We have realised it has been circulating within some of the communities. That is when we talked to public Health England and social care and we need to come in these specific areas, where we have more Delta Variant, is to extend the Testing Programme and pick up some of the cases earlier. The trouble of theseis of the cases earlier. The trouble of these is that they are asymptomatic and people dont know that they have got it. One of the concerns about the Delta Variant is if it keeps circulating, we have got virtually hardly any Hospital Admissions. If it keeps circulating, we might get some more variant and we might get some more variant and we might get some more variant and we might get some more mutations and that is a real concern. We want to minimise the number of variance in the community. Once we get people vaccinated, it will help. Took me throu. H vaccinated, it will help. Took me through how vaccinated, it will help. Took me through how this vaccinated, it will help. Took me through how this works vaccinated, it will help. Took me through how this works in vaccinated, it will help. Took me i through how this works in practice. Testing is a phrase that is used a lot. It sounds good and it sounds like a lot is going to happen. Clearly, it is ultimately dependent on whether people come forward to get tested. So, how are you going to achieve that . You get tested. So, how are you going to achieve that . Achieve that . You are absolutely riuht. A achieve that . You are absolutely right a lot achieve that . You are absolutely right a lot of achieve that . You are absolutely right. A lot of people achieve that . You are absolutely right. A lot of people are achieve that . You are absolutely right. A lot of people are gettingj right. A lot of people are getting tired of restrictions and all of the testing and all of the things that they have to do. Yes, we are talking to the community to try and encourage them to come forward for testing. What this is is that we have a Testing Programme anyway. We encourage people to do twice weekly lateral flow tests, which is the rapid testing. Anybody who has got symptoms, we encourage them to go and get tested. And people who are contacts, we asked them to isolate. What this is, it is a Pcr Test, which is a more accurate one. What we are offering everybody over 12 in those very specific postcode areas is to come forward for a Pcr Test in the next few weeks. We are making it as easy as possible. We have got 16 sites where people can go. I have to say they have managed to mobilise six mobile testing units and two of the local testing sites in just four days. So, we have got all of those testing sites ready for people. They can Go On to their local Council Website and look at vernon nearest. They can go at 8am, lunchtime or hpm. They can ring 111 and get a test or they can order a test online. ,. , test or they can order a test online. , y. ,. ,. , online. Clearly, your enthusiasm for it and what online. Clearly, your enthusiasm for it and what you online. Clearly, your enthusiasm for it and what you have online. Clearly, your enthusiasm for it and what you have set online. Clearly, your enthusiasm for it and what you have set up online. Clearly, your enthusiasm for it and what you have set up is online. Clearly, your enthusiasm for it and what you have set up is very i it and what you have set up is very tangible. We can see that that is what you are doing. The evidence, and you will probably know more than me, and i think it applies to bolton and they did so test there and in reality, when they looked at the numbers of people before and after, itjust numbers of people before and after, it just did numbers of people before and after, itjust did not make very much difference in the actual number of tests that were done. So, have you got a figure in your mind as to what will constitute Surge Testing . How many more then currently taking tests . ,. , many more then currently taking tests . , , tests . Yes, youre absolutely right. Some people tests . Yes, youre absolutely right. Some people have tests . Yes, youre absolutely right. Some people have said tests . Yes, youre absolutely right. Some people have said that tests . Yes, youre absolutely right. Some people have said that in tests . Yes, youre absolutely right. | some people have said that in some areas only 20 to 30 of people come forward for testing. Im hoping that we get at least 50 of people who come forward and even that will pick up come forward and even that will pick up a lot of positive tests that we didnt about before. To help people, what we are going to do is hand out postcards and leaflets to households, so it is not even necessarily reliant on reading the media. We are going to talk to people. In some areas, we are going to talk about being vaccinated and we might even stand up some additional vaccination sites in those areas to encourage people to get vaccinated. That is the most important thing, to get people to get vaccinated. We are going to talk to schools next week and were going to schools next week and were going to drop off tests. So they wont have to go anywhere. We are going to drop off tests so that parents can do tests with their children and we will make it easy for them to drop off the tests and we will pick it up. Equally, we are going to contact businesses and drop off tests. With all of those things, we are hoping that we will get a better uptake. Try and the Reality Check here is, if people dont come forward and things dont change, then what does it look like for the area that you look after which is Berkshire West . You must kind of model it to some degree. What does it look like if these measures dont have an impact . We have already got pretty good Contact Tracing in place. This is through the local council and public Health England, we do itjointly. We have Isolation Support in place. We have Isolation Support in place. We have regular contact. We have all of that. But it seems to me that thatis of that. But it seems to me that that is not enough. The virus is circulating even with all of that in place. If the variant spreads and becomes even more, it may mutate again and the big concern is that vaccines wont work. That is my big concern. We really want to get people tested and isolated, if they have got The Virus. We want to stop the spread so that we can make sure that the Vaccination Programme works. ~ ,. , , works. We wish you well. Im sure we will visit you works. We wish you well. Im sure we will visit you in works. We wish you well. Im sure we will visit you in berkshire works. We wish you well. Enjoying the Sunshine Today| everybody else. Hello, both. I enjoying the Sunshine Today in leeds, saying the temperature has warmed up. We have had so much sunshine. ,. ~. ,. , sunshine. Yes, and i think many of us have seen sunshine. Yes, and i think many of us have seen scenes sunshine. Yes, and i think many of us have seen scenes like sunshine. Yes, and i think many of us have seen scenes like that sunshine. Yes, and i think many of us have seen scenes like that this| us have seen scenes like that this morning. We have seen some sunshine and some gorgeous Weather Watcher pictures. The dog is very un brand. It looks like it has been for a paddle and absolutely drenched. On first glimpse i did think this was a real parrot but i dont think gwynedd is known for its parrots, so i dont know why that is there. The heaviest of the showers i think will be across Northern Ireland, Western Parts of scotland, which for most of us that the headline for most of us will be that it is dry. Here is the satellite. You can see a little bit of cloud here just moving into South Western parts, through wales, Northern Ireland and up towards scotland. This is a week Weather Front and what it is is moving into what you are seeing here which is an area of High Pressure. High pressure will do its thing and it will fizzle out as the Weather Front shimmies in from the west. It will succeed in introducing clouds, patchy rain and a few showers as well. A great start across southern and South Eastern parts of england with some fog. The fog will clear. Some rain across the South West of england and North Western parts of wales as well. To the east of this, a decent amount of sunshine. We will see it brightening up and we will see some Blue Skies. Heavy showers across Northern Ireland and up through western and Northern Parts of scotland. You could hear the odd rumble of thunder here but north east of england, aberdeenshire will see some sunshine. It will be a pleasant enough in that sunshine. Moving ahead through towards this evening, the Weather Front is on the move. It is moving towards the east, taking Cloud And Rain with it. Eventually moving into more central parts of england, through the midlands. It may turn a bit murky across South Western parts. Those tonight of between nine and 13 celsius. First thing Tomorrow Morning, a lot of that cloud will want to linger but it should brighten up. Some sunny spells on offer behind the Weather Front. It will turn cloudier as the Weather Front moves towards the east. Temperature wise, 1a Celsius across Northern Parts of scotland with the top temperatures 22 celsius across South Eastern parts. So, we have a few of these weak Weather Fronts that want to move in over the next couple of days and the product of the Weather Fronts will be thick clouds and patchy rain. The High Pressure it is the mac is what it is going to win the High Pressure is what will win. I would say it qualifies as being. What will win. I would say it qualifies as being. What will win. A celebration will be held in Coventry Today to mark the launch of the uks city of Culture Programme. I played the River Spirit and we are telling a story because there is a river that runs under coventry and i am enticing for future generation to find where the river goes, where it runs and by telling a story about how coventry came together. It came together, obviously, i am the energy of sustainability. That is water. The tree, which people say the name of coventry comes from, it sprang out and it spreads and routes spread far and it spreads and routes spread far and wide and we get coventry as it is today. That is the story. It is today. That is the story. It sounds marvellous and i will say it again, you look fabulous. How much involvement have you had in the to today because i know it has been delayed . It was supposed to be such a big celebration. I know it is all online and there are so much energy going into it but how much have you beenin going into it but how much have you been in the run up . Right going into it but how much have you been in the runup . Been in the runup . Right from the beauinnin , been in the runup . Right from the beginning. I been in the runup . Right from the beginning, i was invited to the beginning, i was invited to the Council House in coventry by a local businessman and i were sat down with all of these people in this room and they said, what you think about this, thats all the other . And i said multiculturalism is what you want to talk about is that is what coventry is, the spirit of peace and reconciliation. This should be a moment about that. All of the people who come into The City and made The City what it was and is. And of course, that goes from medieval times, when we were all weaving and doing those things. Making reverence for ladies bonnets and cars and engineering, and here we are, and we are now into green technology. It is are now into green technology. It is charlie here are now into green technology. It is charlie here in are now into green technology. It is charlie here in the studio. Good morning. Those people of a certain age, who can remember you when you are singing with your band those days will see a slightly contrasting image to the one that we see before us now. You know what i am talking about. What are your recollections of those early days, if that Music Genre . Coventry really was a habit that time. Music, wasnt it . Totally. A lot of people, who had immigrated into this country had come from the caribbean to work in the carfactories here in come from the caribbean to work in the car factories here in coventry, when we still had wonderful car factories turning out all of the wonderful engineering that we had done and, of course, they brought their records with them from the caribbean, so their kids and second generation went to school with white kids and everybody swapped records and said, thats really good. If we put it with some of that Rock Music that you are into, what made me get . What we get is ska music in the variety that we made. Bhd what we get is ska music in the variety that we made. What we get is ska music in the variety that we made. And they were fun times, when variety that we made. And they were fun times, when they . Variety that we made. And they were fun times, when they . It variety that we made. And they were fun times, when they . It is variety that we made. And they were fun times, when they . It is a fun times, when they . It is a glorious celebration now. It is putting coventry back on the map and we have spoken to the organisers before now and that is part of the idea, isnt it . There was something special happening. I think there is sense in trying to embrace that now . Yes, coventry is in the middle of england. You have got to pass through coventry to get anywhere. All of the motorways come round here. So, we went to bring people here. So, we went to bring people here and there is going to be so much happening and it isjust such an honour to be part of the opening if you like of coventry and telling this wonderful story but i do hope that people come and visit here because we have also got a wonderful two Tone Exhibition which is going on in our localart two Tone Exhibition which is going on in our local Art Gallery and museum and there is a music museum, which similarly have all kinds of things. So, come here. There are so much that coventry has to offer. Thank you very much. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Naga Munchetty and charlie stayt. Our Headlines Today Testing is ramped up as the uk sees the highest number of new covid infections in 2 months, putting more Question Marks over the relaxation of restrictions. Lockdown is eased for around half of the people in scotland, which means they can socialise in Each OtherS Homes and drink alcohol in pubs. Norries nadal match up. Cameron norrie takes on the king of clay Rafa Nadal in the French Open. And many of us enjoying some sunny spells across the uk today, but there are some showers in the forecast. I will be back with all the details. Its Saturday 5th june. Our top story more Surge Testing is set to take place after the uk reported the highest daily coronavirus cases since march. One of herare one of her are real concerns about this Delta Variant as if it keeps circulating, people are not getting sick at the moment, virtually no Hospital Admissions, sick at the moment, virtually no hospitaladmissions, if sick at the moment, virtually no Hospital Admissions, if it keeps your clay can get some more variance, more mutations. That is a work concern. We want to try to minimise the number of these variants in the community so that we can get people vaccinated first. The latest figures from across the Uk Show there were more than 6,200 new Coronavirus Infections in the last 24 hour period. That is the highest daily number of cases since The End of march. 11 deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours. Although Hospital Admissions are rising again in areas affected by the Delta Variant, on the whole they continue to remain low. What we think we can start to see now based on that experience from those who have been right at the front of this wave is that it does look as though the vaccines have kind of broken the chain between catching covid 19 and potentially being very, very seriously ill and potentially dying. As the Vaccination Rollout continues, the Uk Regulator has approved the Pfizer Vaccine for 12 15 Year Olds. The Uks Vaccine Committee will decide whether they should be offered it. We Wa Nt we want to be clear at the reasons why we are immunising children. We need to be absolutely sure that the benefits to them and potentially to society far outweigh any risks. With a rise in Infection Rates, many in england are now asking what it means forJune 21. Thats when the government hopes to move to its final stage of its roadmap for lifting lockdown in england. The prime Minister And Health secretary say more data will be assessed next week before any final decisions will be made about restrictions being lifted in england. Helena wilkinson, Bbc News. Lets get more from our political correspondent Helen Catt whos in our london newsroom. Morning to you. I do not know whether there might be people listening to this who are already slightly weary of the speculation about the June 21 date. Slightly weary of the speculation about theJune 21 date. It is unfortunately inevitable, isnt it . Because we are getting figures in every day to do with Infection Rates, to do with surgeries, to do with hospitalisations, and we all know these all well and do have a bearing on what will happen next. Absolutely. That speculation is going to continue for at least another week, going to continue for at least anotherweek, i going to continue for at least another week, i would think. That is because, just as you were saying, we are getting this new data in every day, so too are ministers. They say at the moment it is just too early to make a decision on the 21st of june. They are looking at this data every single day. They are looking for a number of things, every single day. They are looking Fora Number of things, including what that variant you just heard about is having on hospitalisation rates. So far, what ministers have said, is there is nothing they have seenin said, is there is nothing they have seen in this data to suggest that June 21 cannot happen as the earliest date for reopening, all the rest of the economy to moving to step four. That is what they are saying at the moment but they are still watching that data. Alongside this, the government has also been undertaking a review of social distancing along with science, health, business and economic experts. That is look at things like how long the one Metre Plus Rule should stay in place, how long we should stay in place, how long we should wear face covering spa. Those sort of elements, too. That has not reported back yet. That is due to complete a four step four, too. I think this is going to be a little while until we get a definitive decisions on this. The date that ministers have been pointing to was around during the 14th for a decision an announcement. Thank you. June decision an announcement. Thank you. June the decision an announcement. Thank you. June the 14th coronavirus restrictions have eased for millions of people across scotland from this morning. It looks beautiful there this morning. I can see some restrictions are easing, cases are rising, it must be, people almost on tenterhooks as they are looking as to what will change for them. Yes, it is a bit of a mixed bag. Some easing has taken place, like here in glasgow. But easing has been passed in other areas. Now, that is because of the increase in the number of coronavirus cases. Yesterday scotland recorded its highest number of daily cases of coronavirus since february. The number of cases has at least tripled in the last month. So, quite concerning there. But as you say, restrictions have eased in glasgow. Glasgow was under the toughest restrictions in the country, level three, it has now gone down to level two from midnight. So, for the first time in eight months, people in glasgow are going to be able to socialise and Each OtherS Homes. Numbers are very restricted, but you can stay overnight and social distancing does not need to be in place. Now also for the first time if youre going out for a meal in glasgow tonight, you will be able to have alcohol indoors. But a note of caution from the first minister, she said that the situation across scotland remains fragile. Thank you very much a year long celebration of culture in coventry will begin today, with an online event highlighting The Citys musical and multicultural heritage. The event was officially kicked off this morning with Ska Singer Pauline black. There are Pop Up Performances thoughout The Day but people are being urged to watch from home. The Uk City of Culture Programme had been due to begin injanuary but was delayed due to the Pandemic. It was really nice to see polly in a minute ago. Completely embracing the occasion. Terry has got a big bowl of water. I think what we are going to say today is a Weather Front moving into South Western parts, cooling up towards the north of scotland. You can just see it here on the pressure chart. What it is moving into, but it is meeting, if you like, is this area of High Pressure. High pressure generally brings us settled, dry conditions, whereas Weather Fronts and low pressure will bring its Cloud And Rain and something less settled. We are seeing Cloud And Rain into South Western parts of england, through Western Parts of wales. Some heavy, thundery dampers potentially across parts of Northern Ireland. Ahead of this Weather Front, we have seen some Mist And Fog this morning, i am not forgetting about that, across South Eastern parts. It will brighten up. Lets take a little tour of the temperatures. 23 in london, Cooleras Tour of the temperatures. 23 in london, cooler as we head towards the north. Watch out for these heavy downpours in Northern Ireland, Western Parts of scotland. The north of scotland as well seeing some of those. Eastern parts, we will see some brightness and we will see some Sun Shine as well. This evening, the Weather Front is creeping its way across towards the east. Something drier coming in behind it. Murky conditions across South Western parts, but we will see some clear spice galloping across Northern Ireland ahead of the Weather Front in the South East. Temperatures down to 913. In the South East. Temperatures down to 9 13. First thing Tomorrow Morning, a fairamount to 9 13. First thing Tomorrow Morning, a fair amount of cloud out there, everyone, but we will see some sunny spells developing, looking good if you like a bit of blue sky. We will also have a scattering of showers and the Weather Front still producing some cloud out there. Temperature wise tomorrow, 21 22, 14 15 across parts of scotland, feeling cooler. We also see some sunshine. On monday, we have a weatherfront see some sunshine. On monday, we have a Weather Front which is draped across some parts of the uk, but you can see High Pressure is now they are. This does not really want to leave us over the coming days. A snapshot of monday looking like that. A few heavy showers around. Temperature wise, similar sort of thing, about 14 15, 16 further north. Youll see the highest temperatures across southern parts of england. 22 23. Should be mostly dry across wales. Some shows in Northern Ireland. As we move through this coming week, temperatures will rise a bit, we are pulling in the warmer airfrom the rise a bit, we are pulling in the warmer air from the south, the rise a bit, we are pulling in the warmer airfrom the south, the High Pressure is still there. Sunny spells, watch out for some showers, and temperatures rising. That is how it is looking. Looks great. It is 9 14am. That means it is time for us to check in with two people who you are probably very familiar with by now. Joining us now is linda bauld, Whos Professor of public health at the university of edinburgh, and virologist Dr Chris Smith. Good morning to you both. Good morninu. Good morning to you both. Peter asks in hindsight, knowing what we do now about the new variants, should we have opened up like we did on May 17 . Linda, perhaps you can pick up on that. The macro we have seen yesterday the Ons Infection Survey in suggesting some infections up from around 70 from the last reporting period. Reporting period. People are wondering reporting period. People are wondering what reporting period. People are wondering what the reporting period. People are wondering what the effect i reporting period. People are| wondering what the effect of reporting period. People are wondering what the effect of using has been. May the 17th was an important date because it meant we could see people indoors, more hospitality opened up, more people able to go to weddings and funerals. I think the issue was we had been through such a long period of restrictions, we got the rate well below one and far fewer infections, and there were all the other harms that were occurring to be built s mental health, their social connections, even still to education, and then of course to businesses. So the government had to make a decision about when we would begin to ease and that is what has happened. Even though we have seen a rise in infections, we are still not panicking because the number of people that are in hospital, nicu, although that has also risen, has not gone up significantly. Final point on that, we are not alone in this, internationally, countries around europe have been opening up. We cannot live indefinitely locked down. These are policy decisions, they were taken, and we have to say they were taken, and we have to say the next few weeks ago. The next few weeks ago. Chris, can ou ick the next few weeks ago. Chris, can you pick up the next few weeks ago. Chris, can you pick up on the next few weeks ago. Chris, can you pick up on that . The next few weeks ago. Chris, can you pick up on that . Looking the next few weeks ago. Chris, can i you pick up on that . Looking forward toJune 21, i was talking to Chris Hopkins from Nhs Providers, and the point was made that verge on 21st, it cannot be an all or nothing. There will be some balances that have to be struck in terms of opening up. I have to be struck in terms of opening up have to be struck in terms of Oenin U. ~. , opening up. I think really where i am coming opening up. I think really where i am coming from opening up. I think really where i am coming from is opening up. I think really where i am coming from is that opening up. I think really where i am coming from is that on opening up. I think really where i am coming from is that on may i opening up. I think really where i | am coming from is that on May 17 opening up. I think really where i am coming from is that on May 17 we eased am coming from is that on May 17 we eased lockdown a bit further, and that meant there was a lot more mixing that meant there was a lot more mixing between people, and we know that mixing mixing between people, and we know that mixing between people is going to translate into cases. We also know to translate into cases. We also know in to translate into cases. We also know in the background there were these know in the background there were these various variants circulating. There these various variants circulating. There will these various variants circulating. There will always be variants circulating, so we are going to have an ever circulating, so we are going to have an ever present threat. If we kick the can an ever present threat. If we kick the can further down the road, it will not the can further down the road, it will not be the can further down the road, it will not be this variant this week, it will will not be this variant this week, it will be will not be this variant this week, it will be a will not be this variant this week, it will be a different variant next week it will be a different variant next week you it will be a different variant next week. You have to have a longer Term Viewpoint week. You have to have a longer Term Viewpoint. We anticipated that there would viewpoint. We anticipated that there would be viewpoint. We anticipated that there would be an uptake in cases because a more would be an uptake in cases because a more mixing between people, because a more mixing between people, because a a more mixing between people, because a more opening up. That is ust because a more opening up. That is just the because a more opening up. That is just the nature of the beast. As linda just the nature of the beast. As linda has just the nature of the beast. As linda has said, the real decider here linda has said, the real decider here the linda has said, the real decider here, the thing that is really guiding here, the thing that is really guiding us and giving confidence as the number of people who are becoming severely unwell. That remains becoming severely unwell. That remains extremely low and the number of people remains extremely low and the number of people who are passing away, thank of people who are passing away, thank goodness, remains extremely low. Thank goodness, remains extremely low where thank goodness, remains extremely low. Where that disparity or that. Ap low. Where that disparity or that gap is low. Where that disparity or that gap is opening up between where we were last gap is opening up between where we were last year and where we are this year is were last year and where we are this year is because of the vaccine. It is working year is because of the vaccine. It is working very, very well. The variants is working very, very well. The variants that we currently have in the country variants that we currently have in the country are defended against by those the country are defended against by those vaccines. So, as the Prime Minister those vaccines. So, as the Prime Minister as those vaccines. So, as the Prime Minister as saying, at the minute theres minister as saying, at the minute Theres Nothing in the data to suggest Theres Nothing in the data to suggest that we cannot carry on with the current suggest that we cannot carry on with the current Road Map. We have to get to grips the current Road Map. We have to get to grips with the current Road Map. We have to get to grips with the fact this is going to grips with the fact this is going to be to grips with the fact this is going to be the to grips with the fact this is going to be the nature of the beast for some to be the nature of the beast for some time to be the nature of the beast for some time to come. The crucial thing is we some time to come. The crucial thing is we are some time to come. The crucial thing is we are not some time to come. The crucial thing is we are not seeing casey is turning is we are not seeing casey is turning into casualties. Lets hope it stays turning into casualties. Lets hope it stays that way. Just turning into casualties. Lets hope it stays that way. It stays that way. Just pick about one of the it stays that way. Just pick about one of the stories it stays that way. Just pick about one of the stories that it stays that way. Just pick about one of the stories that has it stays that way. Just pick about one of the stories that has emerged this week. It has been a debate that has been going on for some time. What you do about young people and vaccines . We now know devout or Pfizer Vaccines for 12 15 Year Olds has been given the all clear. Maybe it is worth explaining the various organisations involved here. It has been given a Safety Clearance by the mhra, but that is just the first step in the procedure. That mhra, but that is just the first step in the procedure. Step in the procedure. That is ri. Ht. Step in the procedure. That is right when step in the procedure. That is right. When we step in the procedure. That is right. When we make step in the procedure. That is right. When we make drugs i step in the procedure. That is i right. When we make drugs and medicines, unless they are specifically invented for the purposes of going into children, we do not purposes of going into children, we do not test purposes of going into children, we do not test them initially on children do not test them initially on children. We test them on healthy young children. We test them on healthy young adults, and then we increase the numbers of adults in trials until the numbers of adults in trials until we the numbers of adults in trials until we are testing them in real world situations. But to go into children, with something that has no into children, with something that has no evidence, you have to get that evidence. That is what was lacking that evidence. That is what was lacking for that evidence. That is what was lacking for us to say this is ok to use lacking for us to say this is ok to use it lacking for us to say this is ok to use it was lacking for us to say this is ok to use. It was being used any potentially, what we call, off licence way. There was not formal off licence way. There was not formal evidence to say we approve the use formal evidence to say we approve the use of formal evidence to say we approve the use of this agent in this particular age group. Those sorts of studies particular age group. Those sorts of studies have now been done. Data does studies have now been done. Data does exist. Studies have now been done. Data does exist, and this is why regulatory agencies Around The World, regulatory agencies Around The World, including in america, across europe. World, including in america, across europe. With world, including in america, across europe, with the european med inches agency. Europe, with the european med inches agency. The europe, with the european med inches agency, the ema, and also now the mhra, agency, the ema, and also now the mhra, they have given it the nod for use in mhra, they have given it the nod for use in the mhra, they have given it the nod for use in the uk. But they will say this is use in the uk. But they will say this is ok use in the uk. But they will say this is ok to do, it is the jcvi, which this is ok to do, it is the jcvi, which is this is ok to do, it is the jcvi, which is the this is ok to do, it is the jcvi, which is the joint committee on vaccination and immunisation is, they vaccination and immunisation is, they will vaccination and immunisation is, they will actually direct the Policy Or Guide they will actually direct the Policy Or Guide the policy in terms of who. Ets or guide the policy in terms of who gets what or guide the policy in terms of who gets what and when. What is going to feature gets what and when. What is going to feature on gets what and when. What is going to feature on their radar is when do we actually feature on their radar is when do we actually go feature on their radar is when do we actually go into children with these vaccines, actually go into children with these vaccines, if actually go into children with these vaccines, if at all . What is the indication vaccines, if at all . What is the indication for doing that . What is the risk, indication for doing that . What is the risk, Benefit Analysis . What will be the risk, Benefit Analysis . What will be on the risk, Benefit Analysis . What will be on the front of their minds is what will be on the front of their minds is what fraction of the population do we is what fraction of the population do we need to have vaccinated in order do we need to have vaccinated in order to do we need to have vaccinated in orderto minimise do we need to have vaccinated in order to minimise the chances of the Virus Order to minimise the chances of The Virus continuing to spread through the community . Because all the time the community . Because all the time The Virus the community . Because all the time The Virus is the community . Because all the time The Virus is spreading in the community, theres the risk of variance community, theres the risk of variance are merging. Many people are saying. Variance are merging. Many people are saying, if we vaccinate children. Are saying, if we vaccinate children, there is a consideration here children, there is a consideration here which children, there is a consideration here which is that the risk to children here which is that the risk to children is here which is that the risk to children is very, very low. In fact, the deputy children is very, very low. In fact, the deputy chief medical officer said the the deputy chief medical officer said the risk to a child from covid is lower said the risk to a child from covid is lower than the risk of being hit by the is lower than the risk of being hit by the school bus. What she is getting by the school bus. What she is getting at by the school bus. What she is getting at is that children have a very low getting at is that children have a very low risk if they actually catch coronavirus very low risk if they actually catch coronavirus of long term consequences. If we give them a vaccine consequences. If we give them a vaccine, what are we achieving . What we are vaccine, what are we achieving . What we are achieving is the same as we achieve we are achieving is the same as we achieve with we are achieving is the same as we achieve with a rubella vaccination. When achieve with a rubella vaccination. When i achieve with a rubella vaccination. When i was achieve with a rubella vaccination. When i was little, i caught rubella, german when i was little, i caught rubella, german measles, i did not lie had it, german measles, i did not lie had it. But german measles, i did not lie had it. But we german measles, i did not lie had it, but we vaccinate people against it, but we vaccinate people against it because it, but we vaccinate people against it because had i given that asymptomatic infection to a pregnant women asymptomatic infection to a pregnant women, she could have had severe consequences. It is for the benefit of society consequences. It is for the benefit of society that we protect against rubella, of society that we protect against rubella, for example. It is really the same rubella, for example. It is really the same consideration here. Plunder, the same consideration here. Plunder, you want to pick up on that . In terms of public health messaging, this is more nuanced, isnt it . If we get to the point where children are, the official line is they should be having the Pfizer Vaccine, 12 15 Year Olds, the messaging around how you encourage young people to do that or their parents, i suppose youre encouraging a number of people, it may be will have to change. That encouraging a number of people, it may be will have to change. May be will have to change. That is correct. May be will have to change. That is correct we may be will have to change. That is correct. We are may be will have to change. That is correct. We are very may be will have to change. That is correct. We are very used may be will have to change. That is correct. We are very used to may be will have to change. That is correct. We are very used to giving | correct. We are very used to giving vaccines to children in the uk. As chris says, it is something we do for many different conditions, and we are very good levels of vaccine uptake. Forteenagers for we are very good levels of vaccine uptake. For teenagers for example we have the hpv vaccine, which has been administered recently. Uptake of that generally has been good. In terms of the messaging, there are over 2 Million teenagers in the us that have already received the Pfizer Vaccine. What we need to do is give information to parents of the kind that chris has just explained, reassure them about this trial, involving over 2000 young people, and then say to young people in the way we are trialling now to 1829 in the way we are trialling now to 18 29 year olds, you are eligible, this virus still poses a threat to you even if it is very, very small, and you can help others by getting vaccinated to build population immunity. So you do not transmit it to older, more vulnerable people. What we are seeing in the surveys is that young adults are keen to get their vaccine when they are eligible, and i would expect teenagers actually to be the same. But youre right, we do have to message it in a sensitive way for both the parents and for themselves. Linda, in terms of messaging, one of this morning, as Surge Testing, testing is being wrapped up. Can you explain, what is Surge Testing . Often we hear there has been thousands more tested in a certain area, where perhaps a strain has emerged, the Delta Strain for example, but that may compare to another area that is already testing more there. What is Surge Testing, what is the definition, and how would we do we know when it is actually happening . Would we do we know when it is actually happening . Surge testing is focused on a actually happening . Surge testing is focused on a locality actually happening . Surge testing is focused on a locality where actually happening . Surge testing is focused on a locality where there i focused on a locality where there are concerns, either about rising rates of infection, particular variants of concern that we have been discussing a lot, or wejust need to reach more people to identify where infections are. It might be that it is a more deprived area and we want to focus resources there. What it means is that the government and public health colleagues will put more testing facilities into that community and then they will advertise that. Youre right about the messaging, notably through local government, local radio etc, and people can confirm referred to involves a couple of things. We are encouraged to take up the asymptomatic lateral flow test. Those can be used. And in particular when your Search Setting in a community, for example for a variant of concern, you would also offer Pcr Testing. That is the more accurate type of testing. That could be door to door, mobile units. We have seen that in blackburn, in boulton, in glasgow etc. What i would say to people in london, because of the beta variant, the South African variant, what i would say to people as if you are asked to come forward, please do. The tests have tiny, no risks. It will help us get on top of any infections as we continue to open up. So that we can break those chains of transmission. Chris, do you want to pick up on that . A little early on we were speaking to the director of public health in Berkshire West, one of those places where they are going to start doing Surge Testing On Monday. She was saying that they have seen quite alarming rise in cases, as in people who are positive, and a lot of these were actually asymptomatic, which makes it incredibly difficult to stem the tide without resorting to stem the tide without resorting to such testing. What is the evidence around people who are asymptomatic . You basically cant tell until you have the test. This has been one tell until you have the test. This has been one of tell until you have the test. This has been one of the tell until you have the test. This has been one of the real challenges with this has been one of the real challenges with this corona Pandemic. Because normally. With this corona Pandemic. Because normally, when i say normally, when we cope normally, when i say normally, when we cope with normally, when i say normally, when we cope with outbreaks of infectious diseases. We cope with outbreaks of infectious diseases, they have a defined set of symptoms diseases, they have a defined set of symptoms and it is easy to tell who has got symptoms and it is easy to tell who has got the symptoms and it is easy to tell who has got the disease and who has not. Take a has got the disease and who has not. Take a bowler for example, when we had the take a bowler for example, when we had the outbreak in west africa, it was very had the outbreak in west africa, it was very obvious indeed if someone had a was very obvious indeed if someone had a severe illness. A proportion of those had a severe illness. A proportion of those people had malaria, but they had of those people had malaria, but they had defining features and it was easy they had defining features and it was easy to keep the people did not have it was easy to keep the people did not have it away from the people who potentially did have it and test them potentially did have it and test them. We approached coronavirus in them. We approached coronavirus in the early them. We approached coronavirus in the early days in the same way. We thought the early days in the same way. We thought people have got this, it is killing thought people have got this, it is killing people, it has got to be a dramatic killing people, it has got to be a dramatic presentation, there must be symptoms dramatic presentation, there must be symptoms. And we did not realise initially. Symptoms. And we did not realise initially. As symptoms. And we did not realise initially, as a whole world community, that there was a very hih community, that there was a very high fraction of people who have absolutely no symptoms at all with this infection. Or they have such trivial this infection. Or they have such trivial symptoms just write them off as inconsequential. That fraction may be as inconsequential. That fraction may be as as inconsequential. That fraction may be as high as half. In other words. May be as high as half. In other words. One may be as high as half. In other words, one person into who can have the infection words, one person into who can have the infection, be fully infected and infectious, the infection, be fully infected and infectious, in other words they are dispensing infectious, in other words they are dispensing virus into the environment around themselves that is capable environment around themselves that is capable of infecting a third party is capable of infecting a third party, they may make up half of the population party, they may make up half of the population of infected individuals. That makes a strategy to control listing that makes a strategy to control listing incredibly deaf dumb and challenging. You cannot rely on people challenging. You cannot rely on People Self reporting i have got symptoms, i must have the disease. Is symptoms, i must have the disease. Is linda. Symptoms, i must have the disease. Is linda. Do symptoms, i must have the disease. Is linda, do you think there will be a time, imjust is linda, do you think there will be a time, im just thinking about opening up, there is a lot of Debate And Speculation about how, to what extent the uk, england, is going to open up when that announcement comes onJune 21, when you get to the point, do you think, or what would be the point do you think when we do not have to isolate if we have covid . It is not a law to isolate. Actually, i do not whether you notice that Michael Gove had been in portugal and has been in contact with the grass tested positive. He is actually not isolating. He is going to be regularly tested. There are already, every day i emphasise, there are already alternative ways to do that. In terms of trying to dumb acts of isolation is a really good way to protect others from being infected. We are going to need to continue to use it for some time. When we have more of the population vaccinated, we are very tiny, tiny levels of infection, it is very rare, we might have the occasional outbreak, then i do not think people will need to self isolate if they come into contact with a positive case. Particularly if they had both doses of the vaccine. In the us, the centre for disease control, has already given that guidance to people with both doses. There is hope. We are not that far. Self isolation is not something we will have to live with and definitely, definitely not. Have to live with and definitely, definitely not. Michael gove, that is art of definitely not. Michael gove, that is part of a definitely not. Michael gove, that is part of a clinical definitely not. Michael gove, that is part of a clinical trial. Definitely not. Michael gove, that is part of a clinical trial. That definitely not. Michael gove, that is part of a clinical trial. That is i is part of a clinical trial. That is not something that is being rolled out to us. He not something that is being rolled out to us. , not something that is being rolled outto us. ,. , ,. ,. , out to us. He is obviously a leader in the country. Out to us. He is obviously a leader in the country, but out to us. He is obviously a leader in the country, but all out to us. He is obviously a leader in the country, but all the out to us. He is obviously a leader in the country, but all the studies| in the country, but all the studies we have talked about, it is really important we try these different approaches so we can find ways to keep everyone safe and continue to move forward. Keep everyone safe and continue to move forward move forward. Chris, many people watchin move forward. Chris, many people watching this move forward. Chris, many people watching this will move forward. Chris, many people watching this will have move forward. Chris, many people watching this will have seen move forward. Chris, many people watching this will have seen that i watching this will have seen that what is now known as the Delta Variant, the indian variant, is deemed to be the dominant variant now and we will also be aware that the rise in cases is what we call exponential, it is growing considerably all the time. Now, theres a sense, i think, that people is that maybe we have to live with it certain amount of infections. That is maybe how the future lies. But the fear they are, of course, is that if you allow it to grow or to be at a certain level, thenit to grow or to be at a certain level, then it can mutate. What is the science tell us about how much infection has to be anyplace before The Virus changes, adapts . It is The Virus changes, adapts . It is reall a The Virus changes, adapts . It is really a numbers The Virus changes, adapts . It is really a numbers game. The way in which really a numbers game. The way in which variants emerge is that when these which variants emerge is that when these viruses grow inside ourselves, periodically, just by chance, they make periodically, just by chance, they make genetic spelling mistakes, and they will make genetic spelling mistakes, and they will put the wrong genetic letter they will put the wrong genetic letter into into their genetic code. This happens with a certain frequency. Some viruses do it more than others frequency. Some viruses do it more than others. Nora virus, i guarantee everyone than others. Nora virus, i guarantee everyone has than others. Nora virus, i guarantee everyone has had a run in with that, possibly everyone has had a run in with that, possibly in everyone has had a run in with that, possibly in the last 12 months, very common possibly in the last 12 months, very common. They do it at a massively fast rate common. They do it at a massively fast rate. Other viruses like chickenpox viruses, do it very slowly chickenpox viruses, do it very slowly. Coronavirus is somewhere between slowly. Coronavirus is somewhere between the two. So, therefore, the more between the two. So, therefore, the more people that have more infections more of the time that you have got, infections more of the time that you have got, the more likely you are to. Et have got, the more likely you are to get variants have got, the more likely you are to get variants of The Virus that, in some get variants of The Virus that, in some way get variants of The Virus that, in some way, can do additional things. Because some way, can do additional things. Because if some way, can do additional things. Because if you have got a change in The Virus because if you have got a change in The Virus that means it has the ability The Virus that means it has the ability to The Virus that means it has the ability to grow a bit better, spread ability to grow a bit better, spread a bit better, bypass the immune system a bit better, bypass the immune system a a bit better, bypass the immune system a bit better, make a person a bit more system a bit better, make a person a bit more infectious, those viruses will be bit more infectious, those viruses will be more successful compared to their relatives. So they are more likely their relatives. So they are more likely to their relatives. So they are more likely to transmit to more people more likely to transmit to more people more of likely to transmit to more people more of the time and they will become more of the time and they will become the dominant population. That is exactly become the dominant population. That is exactly what is happening with what is exactly what is happening with what we is exactly what is happening with what we were calling the indian variant what we were calling the indian variant it what we were calling the indian variant. It has taken over as The Day dominic dominant strain in this Country Day dominic dominant strain in this country The Day dominic dominant strain in this country. The more people with the more country. The more people with the more virus country. The more people with the more virus you have got more of the time. More virus you have got more of the time the more virus you have got more of the time, the more likely youre to see this happen time, the more likely youre to see this happen. That is why the current idea is this happen. That is why the current idea is to this happen. That is why the current idea is to get the number of people will Cases Idea is to get the number of people will cases as low as possible, not ust will cases as low as possible, not just in will cases as low as possible, not just in our will cases as low as possible, not just in our country but in every country just in our country but in every country. That is why Melinda Gates said. Country. That is why Melinda Gates said. If country. That is why Melinda Gates said, if there is covid anywhere, there said, if there is covid anywhere, there is said, if there is covid anywhere, there is covid everywhere. It can spread there is covid everywhere. It can spread everywhere. It is about trying spread everywhere. It is about trying to spread everywhere. It is about trying to get the whole world under control trying to get the whole world under control so trying to get the whole world under control so that we keep the levels as low control so that we keep the levels as low as control so that we keep the levels as low as possible and we minimise the chance as low as possible and we minimise the chance of that happening and we back that the chance of that happening and we back that up with some kind of long Term Strategy to do Surveillance And Update vaccines, like we Surveillance And Update vaccines, like we do Surveillance And Update vaccines, like we do for the flu, to try to have like we do for the flu, to try to have a like we do for the flu, to try to have a long Term Control while living have a long Term Control while living alongside what we think is going living alongside what we think is going to living alongside what we think is going to become what we call an endemic going to become what we call an endemic virus. It will not go away, we have endemic virus. It will not go away, we have to endemic virus. It will not go away, we have to live alongside it. Chris and linda. We have to live alongside it. Chris and linda, that we have to live alongside it. Chris and linda, that is we have to live alongside it. Chris and linda, that is done we have to live alongside it. si 3 and linda, that is done with the official hardline questions. Can i do a quick hands up. With all the Covid Restrictions in place for foreign travel at the moment, holidaying in the uk is becoming big business. So, with that in mind, the bbc s Travel Show has gone on an epicjourney to find out how businesses here are getting creative, for a four Part Series beginning this weekend. Lets Take A Look at what its all about. We are on an adventure across the uk as it opens up the travel again. Yes, we are open from rugged coastlines to breathtaking landscapes and natural habitats. Ourjourney will take us across the four nations that make up the united kingdom. And we are doing it sustainably in an all electric revamp of an iconic british motor. This week, i am in scotland, meeting the conservationist restoring britains biggest national park. We want to see the forest continue to march right uphill. Zipping through some spectacular scenery and tasting some traditional bakes with a tiktok superstar. We can now talk to the Travel Show presenter, ade adepitan. Good to see you. How are you doing . It has been a really difficult time. Charlie, it has. It has been a terrible really difficult time. Charlie, it| has. It has been a terrible time over the last year for a lot of businesses all over the world, but in the uk, i got an opportunity to see what they are facing. Youre right, they have had to become creative. In yorkshire, i met a woman who owns some caverns and her business, because she didnt have any visitors for 15 months, it nearly went bankrupt and what she had to do was raffle off some of her Camper Vans had to do was raffle off some of her campervans her camper had to do was raffle off some of her Camper Vans her Camper Van and made enough money from raffling off the Camper Van to keep the business alive. She is now raffling off her flat in order to keep the business running. And there were other businesses in york that were setting up businesses in york that were setting up things like a separate collective. What has helped these businesses to stay open is their connection with the community. The community have realised the importance of these attractions and businesses to them and the lockdown, if there is a positive thing about lockdown and what coronavirus has done, its helpers see the Community Aspect and how important it is first to come together and after the businesses within our own areas. Heres owain with a look at this mornings weather. Hello, both. We are seeing things brightening up now. Im talking about a contrast across the uk. Some of seeing a bit blue sky but that is the story everywhere. We are seeing a contrast because across many parts we are starting to see whether like this now. Its cloudy across the South East and we have seen some Mist And Fog here as well. Cloudy, damp conditions across South Western parts and up through wales, Northern Ireland, scotland are what were seeing here. This is a weak Weather Front bending into an area of High Pressure into the south. This is the kind of thing that is driving our weather over the coming days. It is not going anywhere. We should see plenty of dry weather as we head through the next few days. So, the product of the Weather Front is this. Patchy rain across Western Parts of South England and wales. Temperatures here. What helps and heavy, thundery showers across northern Ireland And Western Parts of scotland and up towards North Scotland as well. Ahead of the worth of rent, aberdeenshire will see some sunshine with temperatures at 18 or 19 degrees. The Weather Front is en route to the east. It is very slowly creeping its way across there. We are seeing an improving story. Fairly cloudy for most of us with temperatures down to about eight or nine to greece degrees. Tomorrow morning, as the Weather Front continues to very slowly move towards the east, we will see things brightening up behind it. There are some heavy showers around tomorrow, some heavy showers around tomorrow, so where it is looking drier and brighter on the graphics, we could see some showers. Temperatures ranging from about 14 and 21 celsius. Cooler to the north and milder towards the south. On monday, High Pressure is still there. This week where the front is still there. It will do its thing, introducing Cloud Commerce and patchy rain and some showers as well. A great deal of dry weather over the next couple of dry weather over the next couple of days. We are also pulling up that milder airfrom the of days. We are also pulling up that milder air from the south. Really, what we will see over the coming daysis what we will see over the coming days is temperatures hovering in the high teens, low 20s. Cooler to the north. We will see sunny spells with the odd shower potentially here or there. Dont forget that we have high or moderate uv levels. Pollen levels may affect you as well over the next couple of days. Theres a lot of grey cloud there. We will see sunny spells developing over the next couple of days. I will leave you with this. This is fred the cat. I love it when a cat follows me on twitter. Captaining the british and irish lions is one of the most High Pressurejobs in all of rugby and its something Gavin Hastings had the privilege of in 1993. Now, hes written a book compiled of interviews with some of the past and present greats of the game and looking at the leadership lessons that can be learned in one of sports most High Pressured environments. Lets Take A Look at gavin in action. Hastings there, straight through. Hastings has burst away and he is going to score between the posts an incredible drive the captain has done it again. He has added a try to his four goals. Would you believe it . And that is a memorable try. And Gavin Hastingsjoins us now. Morning, gavin. How you . I morning, gavin. How you . I am great. Good morning morning, gavin. How you . I am great. Good morning. We morning, gavin. How you . I am great. Good morning. We were morning, gavin. How you . I am great. Good morning. We were saying morning, gavin. How you . I am great. Good morning. We were saying early i good morning. We were saying early about the whole good morning. We were saying early about the whole lions good morning. We were saying early about the whole Lions Tour, good morning. We were saying early about the whole Lions Tour, a good morning. We were saying early about the whole Lions Tour, a lot good morning. We were saying early about the whole Lions Tour, a lot of. About the whole Lions Tour, a lot of people who arent into rugby wont get it but one of the things that i think its confusing about it is that you have all of these teams, the four nations, knocking the stuffing out of Each Other throughout the year and then all of a sudden, they are supposed to go in together and play nicely together and win. How does that work . That is the essence and win. How does that work . That is the essence. In and win. How does that work . That is the essence. In many and win. How does that work . That is the essence. In many respects, and win. How does that work . That is the essence. In many respects, the i the essence. In many respects, the lions are set up to fail. There is no way on Gods Earth that you would think that as you have said, these teams knocking heads out of Each Other over the previous four years will suddenly pick a squad of players, 37 players in this instance, they have not played a match for four years together and under the banner of the british and irish lions, they go off and their challenge is to try and win two out of three test matches against one of the world. In this case, it is the World Champions from two years ago, South Africa. World champions from two years ago, South Africa South Africa. Yes, the challenge is immense South Africa. Yes, the challenge is immense lt South Africa. Yes, the challenge is immense. It is South Africa. Yes, the challenge is immense. It is charlie South Africa. Yes, the challenge is immense. It is charlie here, South Africa. Yes, the challenge is immense. It is charlie here, by South Africa. Yes, the challenge is| immense. It is charlie here, by the way. On that note, gavin, when you are playing international rugby, scotland and i dont know, pick a team, you will be playing against england and you are fierce rivals and then you meet. Maybe in the old days you met in a pub full stop did you meet in a pub when you first got together . What was the atmosphere like in those occasions . It is together . What was the atmosphere like in those occasions . Like in those occasions . It is ust, there is something i like in those occasions . It is ust, there is something magical h like in those occasions . It isjust, there is something magical aboutj there is something magical about representing the british and irish lions. On tour on the other side of the world, the knowledge that so many greats of the game from england, scotland, ireland and wales represented the lions abroad and is, you know, that is the uniqueness of it. Ithink you know, that is the uniqueness of it. I think the fact that we only Go On tour every four years in the last game that they played was a draw against South Africa, just thousands of british and irish supporters being there. The tragedy of course, is that savvy on this occasion, the supporters are not going to be with the lions in South Africa but they will be millions watching on the television, im sure, all over the world and it will be a compelling test. South africa, of course, have not played one game since they won the World Cup 18 months ago. It is a huge challenge for them as well. Gavin, i am huge challenge for them as well. Gavin, iam intrigued, huge challenge for them as well. Gavin, i am intrigued, just picking up gavin, i am intrigued, just picking up on what charlie said. When the squad is picked, they meet, what you do . Team building exercises . Also, i cant imagine anything worse but, in terms of training regimes, each nation and each club keep their training regimes to themselves, so how does that Mix And Match . It is training regimes to themselves, so how does that Mix And Match . It if. A how does that Mix And Match . It is a ve iood how does that Mix And Match . It is a very good point how does that Mix And Match . It is a very good point. You how does that Mix And Match . It is a very good point. You have how does that Mix And Match . It is a very good point. You have just how does that Mix And Match . It 3 very good point. You have just got very good point. You havejust got to lay everything out there. We have this belief in the lions and believe in what you are doing and then you will do that. It is so special to be part of the lions. With this book, i just wanted to speak to some of the greats. The great captains from my first Lions Tour. Just a wonderful leader of men and theyjust took people with them, all the way through to sam warburton, who captained the lions in the last two tours. Another great welshman is coming to The End of his coming test career. It will be his fourth Lions Tour. It is amazing in the modern year. The other iron great irish rate has achieved for tours in the modern era. Alun wynjones has got an opportunity to end his career on the massive high and he has so much respect for the rest of the british and irish players. Im really excited for it. I Cant Wait for it. Everyone you speak to is going to be watching the Test Series and all of the other games with huge interest. It should be interesting and i have enjoyed writing this book, which i Cant Wait. I have got it here. A copy arrived the other day and i was very excited. Copy arrived the other day and i was very excited very excited. Gavin, anyone who knows the very excited. Gavin, anyone who knows the rugby very excited. Gavin, anyone who knows the rugby will very excited. Gavin, anyone who knows the rugby will know very excited. Gavin, anyone who knows the rugby will know that i knows the rugby will know that certainly in your day, when you went to South Africa, there was something quite formidable that you are about to face. The rules were different then and things were allowed on the pitch that art now, is that fair to say . Pitch that art now, is that fair to sa . ~. ,. , say . Well, unfortunately, i never went to south say . Well, unfortunately, i never went to South Africa say . Well, unfortunately, i never went to South Africa with say . Well, unfortunately, i never went to South Africa with the say . Well, unfortunately, i never. Went to South Africa with the lions but i played against South Africa and they are the most physical side. They arejust full of and they are the most physical side. They are just full of giants in their side and if anyone thinks that South Africa are going to change the way that they have played for 100 years, that is not going to happen. They are going to stick to intimidate the lions and bully them upfront. It is a task and these players who have been chosen to represent the lines will be aware of all of that but these people come in all of that but these people come in a few short weeks of their rugby careers, can come back as heroes. That is the magic of the lions. It is just that is the magic of the lions. It isjust a that is the magic of the lions. It is just a brilliant thing to be that is the magic of the lions.
