And wrote to us on thursday. What should the variant be called and does it matter . We can hear the view of a medical student who got in touch with us recently about this issue. Thank you for coming on newswatch. Why are you so concerned with whAt The Bbc calls this variant . I dont see the need for the origin of the variant to be of any concern for the General Public. The General Public needs to know there is a new variant and they need to be more vigilant but they dont need to know where it came from. Thats not of any use to them. Thats of the use of the government to apply these new travel restrictions. The General Publicjust needs to know they need to be more careful. And its the Governments Job to know where it came from. So thats the first reason, its just unnecessary. The more pressing reason is i think because its the serious risk of racism that could occur because of this and i think we have already seen a threefold increase in Hate Crime against people of asian origin over the past year because of so many high profile figures around the world insisting on calling the original strain of the virus the China Virus or the Wuhan Virus and i think its completely unnecessary so i think weve already seen this happen once and i think continuing to call it The Indian Variant, were just risking the same Racism And Hate crimes, violent Hate Crimes, occurring against a whole new group of people which could definitely be prevented. The bbc has started referring to it as the variant first discovered in india to make it clear what the Delta Variant, the new name, is referring to. Is that any better . I think thats certainly true that the who said lets call it the Delta Variant and the bbc is trying to change that but less than 20 hours ago we saw another headline from the bbc when they headline was called The Indian Variant and then further down in the article they referred to it as the Delta Variant and i actually think thats completely understandable because if suddenly we make the switch to Delta Variant, people are not going to know what the Delta Variant means and that might cause panic because they might think this is a whole new variant. I think its going to be hard to make that switch but my personal opinion is thAt The Bbc and the General Public figures should have already noticed this, they know there are these Hate Crimes against people of asian origin and they should have foreseen this is very possible if we continue to call it The Indian Variant and although the who only said it now that they should be calling it the Delta Variant, its always been the who position that we should not be associating places with the virus or variants. Weve already seen that. Who reaffirmed this in a tweet on 12th May and we have seen india themselves, the ministry of information, request that its not called The Indian Variant and we have seen Nicola Sturgeon stop calling it The Indian Variant almost two weeks ago because she foresaw that this could lead to Hate Crimes so i think the bbc might be trying now but this is too little and its too late. To be really practical on what is a complicated and changing story of covid i9, people know it as The Indian Variant and removing all reference to the geography might mean they dont necessarily know whats being talked about. In a sense its fair enough to keep a Reference Back to it . That could just be said in the news that theres a new variant and it could have been called by the scientific name from the start and it could havejust been mentioned that it come from india but again, i think this direct association where its in common use, if you go to a shop, hairdrsser, were hearing people call it The Indian Variant and i think that direct association has become a household name, Ijust Think that was never necessary in the first place and i think we have seen the evidence and we have seen this increase in Hate Crimes occur against people of asian origin when the pandemic first started and i think we are heading down the exact same route by using the term indian variant and that should certainly be prevented. Thank you for coming on newswatch. The fallout from the Dyson Report into Martin Bashir s interview with Princess Diana is not over with news on thursday that matt wiessler, the graphic designer asked by the reporter to mock up fake bank statements, had received an apology from the bbc for the way he had been treated. The corporation is conducting an internal investigation into bashir S Rehiring At The Bbc in 2016 as religious Affairs Correspondent and said its findings would be made public this week. That has not happened. When we asked about it we were told. In the meantime, the whole subject is receiving plenty of attention in the newspapers with some reaction to director general Tim Davies revelation that Martin Bashir was still being paid as he worked out his three month notice period. Leslie mcintyre left us this message on the telephone with her reaction. I want to say how appalled i am that i am now having to pay a Licence Fee to pay Martin Bashir a salary to the end of august and possibly a pension. The bbc are very happy to hunt down politicians for misdemeanours, cover up their own. In a Radio Interview last week, Tim Davie justified the decision to accept Martin Bashir s resignation rather than sacking him by pointing to bashir s medical issues saying it allowed a clean break with no pay off and adding that this was not an honourable discharge. A subject i am sure we will be returning to. The inquiry into the deaths of 22 people at an Ariana Grande Concert in Manchester Arena four years ago will resume on monday. Since it started last september it has heard some harrowing testimony. Last week there was evidence from one of the paramedics who attended the scene after the terrorist Attack And Bbc online report on the Days Hearing was headlined. Which incurred the wrath ofjoshua barker. He sent us this video. I was really disappointed with the Way Bbc chose to headline the piece about the paramedic who was first on scene at the manchester attack. It was a deliberately misleading and provocative headline and it was designed to generate shock and generate clicks and it risks bringing a person and a profession into disrepute. Triage Sort And Sieve is nationally recognised guidance in response to a major incident and the way the bbc headlined the piece shows real ignorance and substandard journalism around the topic. In addition to a redaction of the headline i believe an apology is owed. The headline was amended so that it read paramedic tales of bomb scene, and that was mentioned in the Bbc Statement we were given. It read. Finally, when the bbc first started delivering nightly broadcasts in the 1920s, the announcers had to wear a Dinner Jacket to read the news, even though of course, no one could see them. A century later, when youre Presenting Television youre Presenting Television you sitting down and behind a desk, it might seem similarly pointless to ensure that your Bottom Half is as well dressed as your top off, especially if its been hot outside all day but what about those roving Studio Cameras . While most parts of the uk got to see sunshine on friday, for eastern areas of england, it was a very different story relentless rain that was how it looked in essex. Parts of suffolk had 25mm, just about an inch of rain. You can see that working its way through on the radar picture, tied in with some very unsettled weather affecting much of western europe. But that is clearing away from our shores, high Pressure Building in behind. So, that means a lot of dry weather through the weekend, although, this frontal system coming in from the west will bring something of a fly in the ointment, a few showers here and there out west on saturday, and then perhaps a little further east on sunday. This is how we kick off saturday morning, with Fridays Rain clearing away to the east, a bit of Mist And Murk around across parts of East Anglia and the southeast first thing, but then for many, we will see some spells of sunshine through the day. But that front i showed you out west will start to introduce cloud and some Showery Rain through the afternoon into parts of cornwall, the Western Side of wales as well. Come further east, were into Sunny Skies, and certainly for East Anglia and the southeast, a much warmer feel than we had on friday, 23 celisus The High in london. Fine for much of northern england, but for Northern Ireland, we will see cloud and a few showers, in fact, some sharp showers into the afternoon, perhaps with the Odd Rumble of thunder. Its a similar story for the Western Side of scotland. But Eastern Scotland largely dry and pleasantly warm at 19 celsius under Sunny Skies in aberdeen. Now, as we had through saturday night, that Weather Front will stagger its way eastwards, still some outbreaks of rain along it. These are the temperatures as we start sunday, double digits for many, a little bit chilly across parts of Eastern England and also across some parts of Northern Ireland. And then into sunday, this Weather Front will still be with Us A relatively weak affair but still bringing some extra cloud and some outbreaks of Showery Rain to England And East wales. Elsewhere, further north and west, Northern Ireland and scotland having the sunniest weather of the weekend, i think, on sunday. A little Bit Cooler across northwestern areas, but still quite warm to the southeast, 22 23 celsius. And as we look into the start of the new working week, High Pressure will be building its way in, still potentially one or two showers around here and there and frontal systems bringing Extra Cloud Into Northern Areas at times. But most places dry, some spells of sunshine, and if anything, its going to turn a bit warmer. This is Bbc News. Im mark lobel. Our top stories.
