The General Public needs to know there is a new variant and they need to be more vigilant but they dont need to know where it came from. Thats not of any use to them. Thats of the use of the government to apply these new travel restrictions. The General Publicjust needs to know they need to be more careful. And its the Governments Job to know where it came from. So thats the first reason, its just unnecessary. The more pressing reason is i think because its the serious risk of racism that could occur because of this and i think we have already seen a threefold increase in Hate Crime against people of asian origin over the past year because of so many high profile figures around the world insisting on calling the original strain of the virus the China Virus or the Wuhan Virus and i think its completely unnecessary so i think weve already seen this happen once and i think continuing to call it The Indian Variant, were just risking the same Racism And Hate crimes, violent Hate Crimes, occurring against a whole new group of people which could definitely be prevented. The bbc has started referring to it as the variant first discovered in india to make it clear what the Delta Variant, the new name, is referring to. Is that any better . I think thats certainly true that the who said lets call it the Delta Variant and the bbc is trying to change that but less than 20 hours ago we saw another headline from the bbc when they headline was called The Indian Variant and then further down in the article they referred to it as the Delta Variant and i actually think thats completely understandable because if suddenly we make the switch to Delta Variant, people are not going to know what the Delta Variant means and that might cause panic because they might think this is a whole new variant. I think its going to be hard to make that switch but my personal opinion is thAt The Bbc and the General Public figures should have already noticed this, they know there are these Hate Crimes against people of asian origin and they should have foreseen this is very possible if we continue to call it The Indian Variant and although the who only said it now that they should be calling it the Delta Variant, its always been the who position that we should not be associating places with the virus or variants. Weve already seen that. Who reaffirmed this in a tweet on 12th May and we have seen india themselves, the ministry of information, request that its not called The Indian Variant and we have seen Nicola Sturgeon stop calling it The Indian Variant almost two weeks ago because she foresaw that this could lead to Hate Crimes so i think the bbc might be trying now but this is too little and its too late. To be really practical on what is a complicated and changing story of covid i9, people know it as The Indian Variant and removing all reference to the geography might mean they dont necessarily know whats being talked about. In a sense its fair enough to keep a Reference Back to it . That could just be said in the news that theres a new variant and it could have been called by the scientific name from the start and it could havejust been mentioned that it come from india but again, i think this direct association where its in common use, if you go to a shop, hairdrsser, were hearing people call it The Indian Variant and i think that direct association has become a household name, Ijust Think that was never necessary in the first place and i think we have seen the evidence and we have seen this increase in Hate Crimes occur against people of asian origin when the pandemic first started and i think we are heading down the exact same route by using the term indian variant and that should certainly be prevented. Parts of suffolk had 25mm, just about an inch of rain. You can see that working its way through on the radar picture, tied in with some very unsettled weather affecting much of western europe. But that is clearing away from our shores, high Pressure Building in behind. So, that means a lot of dry weather through the weekend, although, this frontal system coming in from the west will bring something of a fly in the ointment, a few showers here and there out west on saturday, and then perhaps a little further east on sunday. This is how we kick off saturday morning, with Fridays Rain clearing away to the east, a bit of Mist And Murk around across parts of East Anglia and the southeast first thing, but then for many, we will see some spells of sunshine through the day. But that front i showed you out west will start to introduce cloud and some Showery Rain through the afternoon into parts of cornwall, the Western Side of wales as well.
