Donald trump says that facebook s decision to suspend him from all of its Social Media platforms until 2023 is an insult to the millions of people who voted for him. The company says the former president s profile will only be reinstated if it can be satisfied that his posts no longer pose a threat to public safety. The ban was imposed after his supporters stormed the us capitol injanuary. Our Media Editor Amol rajan has been examining facebook s changing role in the political landscape. We have to have peace, we have to have law and order. It was an extraordinary moment in modern american democracy. In the judgment of many independent observers, disputed by his supporters, an outgoing president incited a mob. As a result, his megaphones were taken away. Twitter banned him. Youtube suspended his account, and facebook did the same. Theyve created an Oversight Board to give independent advice on such editorial judgements. Last month, it upheld his suspension. The person leading facebook s policy decisions is sir Nick Clegg, the former british deputy prime minister. Today, he said that trump will be banned for two more years. Free speech, free expression, its not a free for all. Its not a recipe for anarchy. We have always had rules, quite rightly, as facebook, that you can in a Sense Kind of say what you like on facebook, but you cant do that if that inflicts harm on others. Its a pretty long standing principle that goes right back to the mid 19th century, this idea that, you know, youre free to do things, but not if that inflicts harm on others. And that is a rule that we apply, doesnt matter whether you are the pope, the president of united states, whether you are an ordinary user, you cannot use facebook if you want to use facebook in a way which leads to real world harm, and we think its crystal clear in this case that that is exactly what was happening onjanuary the 6th in washington, dc. Denuded of his access to Social Media, Mr Trump put out a more conventional statement describing the move as an insult. This weird strip of motorways and campuses just south of san francisco, whats known as silicon valley, contains the biggest concentration of Computer Scientists and Software Engineers in history. And yet these days, theyre increasingly being dragged towards political philosophy where, by a Curious Quirk of history, their sage is the former leader of the liberal democrats. And in weighing Free Speech against the potential harm of certain words, Nick Clegg is edging closer to terrain that has traditionally been dominated byjournalists. Except facebook is much more powerful than any News Organisation ever was. Facebook s dilemma was guaranteed to annoy millions of voters. Like most social networks, it was set up to connect friends but is now reshaping democracy itself. Amol rajan, bbc news, san francisco. The united nations has issued a stark warning that ethiopia could be heading for a repeat of the deadly famine of 1984, unless a ceasefire is agreed. Months of fighting between government forces and the regional authorities in tigray have decimated crops, leaving hundreds of thousands of people near starvation. Now, the government is making it hard for Aid Agencies to reach those trapped by the fighting. Our africa correspondent, andrew harding, reports. The men with guns are bringing starvation once again to ethiopia. Across the fragile Northern Region of tigray, months of conflict have destroyed farms, crops and clinics. With access limited, much of the suffering here is hidden from the outside world. Fears of famine have been growing steadily, but today the un told us that Famine Conditions have now arrived. Their farms have been destroyed, their harvest was destroyed, their Bank Accounts dont exist any more. Theres hundreds of thousands of people in Famine Conditions now in tigray. Archive dawn, and as The Sun breaks through the Piercing Chill of night on the plain outside korem, it lights up a biblicalfamine. Its four decades since this region experienced a famine that shook the world. Is history repeating itself . It is not unreasonable to worry about a rerun of 1984 Michael Buerk reporting the death of a child or a person every 20 minutes. If the world doesnt Wake Up and started to tackle this problem, dont be surprised if thats what we get. Ethiopias government is resisting international calls for a ceasefire and says its war against tigrayan rebels is nearly won. But access for aid groups remains restricted, the hungriest families trapped behind front lines. All of the checkpoints, the men with guns stopping aid vehicles and Aid Workers getting through, need to be told by their political masters to step back. So, to be clear, when the ethiopian authorities say, this conflict is nearly over, we are giving full humanitarian access where possible, theyre lying . Most of the people who are starving and dying and need help are not getting help thats the fact of the matter. Many people are on the move some heading across the border into neighbouring sudan. Theyre fleeing a conflict of staggering violence with growing evidence that rape and now starvation are being used deliberately as weapons of war. Hundreds of homes have been evacuated after wildfires broke out on an island off bergen on norways North Western coast. Large areas of forest have been affected. The cause remains unknown emergency services say the fires could be burning for days to come. Tanya dendrinos reports. An Amber Glow across the sky and the sound of helicopters. Crews battling strengthening winds to halt the spread of a norwegian wildfire. Translation the area that has burned is large. I dont have a full overview of the number of square kilometres, but there are fire fronts that are several kilometres long. More than 500 people were evacuated off the coast of bergen. The crackle of flames raging. This building engulfed. Several firefighters were injured and police are still working to investigate the cause of the blaze which broke out on thursday. Translation we are running Law Enforcement services in this area to ensure the homes that have been evacuated are not exposed to burglary and so on. We have a strong focus on this. Crews believe it will take days to extinguish the threat not yet over. Tanya dendrinos, bbc news. Parents in the united states are being urged to get their children vaccinated against covid i9, after new data showed a rise in teenage hospitalisations. A report from the center for Disease Control suggested that figures rose sharply in april one in three teenagers admitted to hospital earlier this year needed icu treatment. Last month the us Food And Drug administration authorised the Pfizer Biontech Vaccine for use in adolescents, and moderna is seeking the same for its vaccine this month. It comes as regulators in the uk look to approve earlier i spoke to dr allison messina, the chair ofjohns hopkins all childrens hospitals infectious disease division. She says children and teenagers are become increasingly more vulnerable. Despite the fact that it is true that the virus causes more severe disease in adults we are seeing a fairly severe disease and some other older teenagers as and i think that we are seeing a little bit. We have seen that seeing a little bit. We have seen that a seeing a little bit. We have seen that a little seeing a little bit. We have seen that a little bit seeing a little bit. We have seen that a little bit more i seen that a little bit more acutely now that a lot of adults have been vaccinated and children are, by and large, they have not had a chance to get vaccinated yet so they are still vulnerable. The get vaccinated yet so they are still vulnerable. Get vaccinated yet so they are still vulnerable. The next step is to convince still vulnerable. The next step is to convince paris still vulnerable. The next step is to convince paris to still vulnerable. The next step is to convince paris to have i is to convince paris to have their children vaccinated but we are aware there is a lot of Vaccine Hesitancy among some adults in america, so how are they going to do that . They going to do that . Well, i think that they going to do that . Well, i think that really they going to do that . Well, i think that really be they going to do that . Well, i think that really be a think that really be a challenge is going to be to get those parents on board with from someone that they trust. So it really has to go back to the childs own paediatrician being the advocate for vaccinating children. Parents really dont want to take a vaccine from someone that they dont know so we are really kind of pushing this to the general paediatricians that take care of the skits and have known that their whole lives and that is really what were trying to do. Because this is a safe vaccine and it is a very effective vaccine and we just want people to believe in it because it is really going to help the kids stay healthy. There is a huge Question Mark over whether children should be vaccinated ahead of the Global Aduu vaccinated ahead of the global adult population. How do you think the vaccine should go to first . , think the vaccine should go to first . , ~. , ,. , first . Sure. And that is such a complicated first . Sure. And that is such a complicated question first . Sure. And that is such a complicated question in first . Sure. And that is such a complicated question in suchl first . Sure. And that is such a | complicated question in such a one. I mean, ithink that complicated question in such a one. I mean, i think that it is absolutely true that, when you have vaccines and you have nations that dont have enough for their adult population, we absolutely have a responsibility to get it out that those adults. I know that there is a lot of logistical issues and obviously, you know, Distribution Issues which are complicated but i think that, you know, were kind of moving forward in that direction to really push those vaccines out to the countries who really need it most and the population is really suffering. The 5th Ofjune is designated World Environment Day by the un its initiative to encourage governments and people across the globe to make their cities, lifestyles and the planet more sustainable. It was around this time a year ago when the Pandemic Forced Countries to close their borders and airlines to ground their planes , when many said it was an opportunity to set the world on a greener path. But new research shows that despite the shutdown, rising Sea Temperatures and Melting Ice sheets could still impact 40 of the worlds population. And in the us, miami is considering the need for a six Mile Wall to protect the city. read on well earlier i spoke to shelbi, an environmental youtuber, whos been on what she calls a journey to build a sustainable lifestyle. She began on youtube by diving into trash containers to find unused products. I personally have been environmentalist for over ten years now and realised that corporations themselves are incredibly wasteful and i just wanted to expose them for that, so i decided to do it the best way i knew how, showing it through video. What did you find . So many things but some of the most shocking things was food that was perfectly edible that instead of donating it to people who could have years that fit and stopping it from going to waste, they send it to landfill. Things like freshly baked cookies, perfectly good projects, make up that had not been touched. All kinds of stuff. You change your behaviour massively, didnt you . Idid. Back when i was in high school, i called myself a Baby Environmentalist Shelbi back then but i was what i was referred to as a hyper consumer, i never repeated an outfit and if you know anything about the world of fast fashion, it has an incredibly large environmental footprint and whenever that outcome i stopped buying clothes for about five years so that was a really big adjustment to her i was when i started to who i am now, obviously. As you have found when youre going to the trash, people through all sorts of things away. When i had a load more why break recently, my wife basically said just throw it away. We managed to fix the wire, but it is that Mind Set that travels across many families, so how do you convince sceptics, including your own family . To that point specifically, i wont talk too much on that but it is not only the main set but also they shift within corporations adjusting things a lot cheaper now, not so high quality and making repairs more expensive, so there is a whole issue there we could get into but personally, for me, im from texas and my family definitely do not have instinctual environmental practices and that they do. I was not taught these things and so trying to convince them to do things here and there is not the easiest task. But i find that two things that have worked overtime are either speaking to their concerns, which a lot of times as money, they think living more sustainably customer money, so being prepared to combat that and kind of show how it does not have to be. And then also living by example. That has been in that has been able to convince anyone in my life to actually make a change is just by showing them how to do it. And governments need to act too, dont they . This is a crucial year with Climate Change on the agenda. A biden in power, what do you want to see happen . Absolutely. But the Green New Deal is at the baseline that is happening in the us is specifically right now. We need to see that legislation pushed through. And definitely, i think the year 2020 was the year that showed individual action can lead to massive change. And quickly. If we compare it to the way we treated coronavirus, you know, if we implement that same Fire And Passion and urgency behind Climate Change, i think the similar thing can happen. We just need more people speaking about it, like you said. Let 5 get some of the days other news an unofficial tribunal in london has begun hearing first Hand Evidence of alleged Human Rights Abuses against the uyghur people in North Western china. Chinese authorities have been accused of genocide and Crimes Against Humanity in xinjiang province, home to the mainly muslim minority. Beijing says the tribunal has no credibility. A group of geologists sent by the mexican government have arrived in the state of puebla to examine a huge sinkhole that appeared a week ago on agricultural land. Finance ministers from the g7 leading economies are said to be close to agreement on a fairer international tax system, Closing Loopholes exploited by giant tech companies. The ministers were meeting in london, ahead of next weeks leaders summit. 0ur Economics Editor Faisal Islam reports. In a crisis, an opportunity for historic global change. The chancellors welcome still from behind masks and with no handshakes, but this, the first major in Person Meeting of the worlds most powerful nations since the covid outbreak, ahead of the Cornwall G7 Summit next week. All of the Finance Ministers here have been borrowing incredible amounts trillions of euros, dollars and yen, to support their economies through the pandemic, and have coffers to fill. And at the same time Covid 19 has accelerated sales, profits and revenues at multinational digital giants who have proved difficult to squeeze taxes out of. So the worlds big economies are deciding at this meeting to set a global minimum rate of corporation tax. We are spending a lot of public money to protect our economies against the consequences of the covid, and to have a quick and very strong economic recovery, but we need money, and we need new resources. So how do you sell this within the European Union to your colleague, the president of the eurogroup, the Finance Minister of ireland . I can understand the difficulty of ireland and some other european countries, but when there is such international impetus, this is in the interests of all 27 European Member states to say, yes, we are on board and we are supporting this new international tax system. It is the us leading the charge on this, under president bidens treasury secretary, Janet Yellen a massive turnaround from the trump administration, and those in the room say this agreement will be historic. We will have an agreement which will really change the world, and we will be able to do what we have to do for our people, and this will be a Turning Point in global cooperation because the last decades were going into the other direction, now we are going into the right one. The Finance Ministers will squeeze big global corporations, with a minimum Tax Rate of at least 15 applying around the world. The crisis means theyve got no choice. But in the fine detail of these negotiations, theres still a question about who gets that bounty. Thats why the chancellor has being cautious so far. Will it go predominantly, hundreds of billions of dollars, to the coffers of president biden, from the us Tech Giants, or can they agree that notjust the profits, but the sales in, say, britain, from these global Tech Giants can be taxed by britain . Talks over making it compulsory for major companies to report on their plans for cutting Carbon Emissions are also on a knife edge. As one minister put it, if the west doesnt work together to set the rules for the 21st century, then china will. Faisal islam, at the G7 Meeting in london. A us Government Report on sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects has found no evidence of Alien Activity , but, intriguingly, does not rule it out. The product of a us military Task Force established last year to investigate decades of unexplained aerial sightings, the report reviewed 120 incidents, and is expected to conclude that us technology was, in most cases, not involved. Beyond that, however, the report makes no definitive assessments about what the objects might be. While most parts of the uk got to see sunshine on friday, for eastern areas of england, it was a very different story relentless rain that was how it looked in essex. Parts of suffolk had 25mm, just about an inch of rain. You can see that working its way through on the radar picture, tied in with some very unsettled weather affecting much of western europe. But that is clearing away from our shores, high Pressure Building in behind. So, that means a lot of dry weather through the weekend, although, this frontal system coming in from the west will bring something of a fly in the ointments, a few showers here and there out west on saturday, and then perhaps a little further east on sunday. This is how we kick off saturday morning, with Fridays Rain clearing away to the east, a bit of Mist And Murk around across parts of East Anglia and the southeast first thing, but then for many, we will see some spells of sunshine through the day. But that front i showed you out west will start to introduce cloud and some Showery Rain through the afternoon into parts of cornwall, the Western Side of wales as well. Come further east, were into Sunny Skies, and certainly for East Anglia and the southeast, a much warmer feel than we had on friday, 23 celisus The High in london. Fine for much of northern england, but for Northern Ireland, we will see cloud and a few showers, in fact, some sharp showers into the afternoon, perhaps with the Odd Rumble of thunder. Its a similar story for the Western Side of scotland. But Eastern Scotland largely dry and pleasantly warm at 19 celsius under Sunny Skies in aberdeen. Now, as we had through saturday night, that Weather Front will stagger its way eastwards, still some outbreaks of rain along it. These are the temperatures as we start sunday, double digits for many, a little bit chilly across parts of Eastern England and also across some parts of Northern Ireland. And then into sunday, this Weather Front will still be with Us A relatively weak affair but still bringing some extra cloud and some outbreaks of Showery Rain to England And East wales. Elsewhere, further north and west, Northern Ireland and scotland having The Sunniest weather of the weekend, i think, on sunday. A little Bit Cooler across northwestern areas, but still quite warm to the southeast, 22 23 celsius. And as we look into the start of the new working week, High Pressure will be building its way in, still potentially one or two showers around here and there and frontal systems bringing Extra Cloud Into Northern Areas at times. But most places dry, some spells of sunshine, and if anything, its going to turn a bit warmer. This is bbc news, the headlines.
