Out towards the west it is fine all the way towards South Western scotland and not a bad day in Northern Ireland as well. Still wet in the South East this evening. Coronavirus cases in scotland have more than tripled over the past month with Todays Case numbers at the highest level since february, according to the scottish government. But First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said there are now strong indications that vaccines are weakening the link between new cases and hospitalisations. Speaking at her regular News Briefing in edinburgh, Ms Sturgeon confirmed another 992 positive cases with two more deaths in the past 2a hours. You can very clearly see from todays figures, we are at a very criticaljuncture right now, in what we still hope, still very much hope and believe, is a transition to a less restrictive way of dealing with covid, but the position we are in now on that transition is a fragile one and that will inform my Comments Today and the tone of the comments i want to make today. 0n the downside, as we can see, cases are rising again. They have more than tripled over the last month and today, the more than 900 cases that have been reported is the highest number of new cases since the 17th of february. The R Number is now estimated to be above one. Indeed, many experts believe that, notjust scotland, but the uk is now at the start of a third wave of covid. Underlying this and, indeed, driving all of this is the new Delta Variant which now makes up the majority of all new cases in scotland. This variant is thought to be quite significantly more transmissible than even the Kent Variant which we were dealing with at the turn of the year. There is, as you may have seen reported last night and this morning, early data suggesting that, all else being equal, it may increase the risk of hospitalisation. Hopefully, vaccines are reducing overall the risk of hospitalisation, but even if it is a lower risk, the early data suggests that this new Delta Variant has a higher risk than the variants that went before it. But it is important to say that that is something which is still under investigation and what has been reported in the last 2a hours is early data. All of that, obviously, gives us cause for concern and right throughout this, i have never tried to shy away from saying to you when we are in a period that should make all of us Sit Up and remember that this Virus Isnt done with us yet. That said, there is an upside now as well and it is an upside that we didnt have at the start of the first wave or even at the start of the second wave and that is, of course, the vaccines. We do need to analyse the data on an ongoing basis so, again, a bit like the data on hospitalisations i havejust spoken about, its too early to be definitive, but the strong indications that we have so far are that vaccines are weakening the link between rising cases and cases of hospitalisations, Intensive Care and people dying. Glasgow is set to enter level two restrictions tomorrow, but today the First Minister urged people to be careful and stay outside where possible. Glasgow, which, of course, has had the toughest restrictions in place for longest is going to level 2 tomorrow. Thats possible because of the collective sacrifice of people in the city and the massive public Health Effort that is still ongoing it had stabilised the situation and being able to visit family and friends or have a drink in a bar will be a great relief to people in the city. Its eight or nine months since visiting family and friends indoors has been possible and as someone who lives in glasgow, i know how difficult that has been, but please still be careful. Case numbers, as you can see, are still high, so, again, stay outside as much as you can. Nicola sturgeon there. The wales first Minister Mark Drakeford has confirmed wales will move to alert level1 from monday allowing up to 30 people to meet outdoors. He stressed that the backdrop to this latest review was the rise of the Rain'>Delta StRain of coronavirus in other parts of the uk. From monday of next week, therefore, up to 30 people will be able to meet indoors and that includes indoor hospitality, Public Spaces and private gardens. Outdoor events and organise activities will be able to take place with a maximum number of 4,000 people in a Standing Venue and 10,000 people when they are seated. But i must make this very clear those are maximum numbers. All organisations arranging such events must carry out a Risk Assessment of the specific venue to make sure that it is meeting the requirements set out in regulations to take the measures necessary to prevent the spread of the virus. Over and above the easements that we can offer from monday for activities outdoors, we will also be able, from monday, to increase and above households who can come together to form an extended Household And Support bubble up until now, only to households of been able to come together. From monday, that number will increase to three and i know that that will be welcomed by many families right across wales. In Hong Kong, police are patrolling the streets and much of the city s Victoria Park has been closed off, in an effort to stop people gathering to mark the anniversary of the 1989 Tiananman Square massacre as they have done over most of the past three decades. To australia now where a dozen Media Outlets have been handed hefty fines for Contempt Of Court over their coverage of the conviction of cardinal George Pell on Child Sex Abuse charges. The cardinal, who has always maintained his innocence, was released from prison last year after his convictions were quashed. Phil mercer reports from sydney. Justicejohn dixon had some pretty stern words for sections of australia S Media as he convicted and sentenced a dozen Media Organisations for Contempt Of Court. He said that broadcasters and newspapers had displayed a blatant and wilful defiance of the court s authority. He also said that the media had tried to usurp the function of the court. This all relates to a Suppression Order that was imposed in the latter part of 2018. This order was put in place after cardinal pell was found guilty by a jury of abuse charges. The reason this order was put in place was to protect a second trial that cardinal George Pell was due to have faced. The reason being was that the judge didn t want that second hearing to be prejudiced in any way by that earlier guilty verdict. But in the event, some Media Organisations reported on that guilty verdict. They didn T Name cardinal George Pell. The media said they were taking a stand against what they were describing as the Secrecy And Censorship surrounding the cardinal George Pell case. They were, though, faced with Contempt Of Court charges and today they have received their penalties, ranging from a few hundred dollars to a few hundred thousand dollars. The judge, as we say, particularly scathing of certain Media Organisations, saying they were trying to subvert Suppression Orders in the state of victoria. Cardinal George Pell was jailed for six years, he served more than 400 days in prison before his convictions were overturned by australia s High Court last year. Throughout the pandemic, gardening has been a way for many people to forget about coronavirus, lockdowns and social distancing. But not many of us could compete with simon olpin s horticultural skills. His garden in the suburbs of the northern English City of sheffield is quite literally breath taking. Paul hudson reports. I ve come to millhouses, it is a suburb in the south of sheffield. I m here to meet a family who started on a journey 30 years ago to produce something really rather special. I honestly cannot wait for you to see what lies behind this house. Are you ready for this . It is absolutely magnificent. Just feast your eyes on this we have a jungle in the Heart Sheffield and the creator is simon. Simon, this is the first time i have seen it, it is absolutely fantastic. Where did you get the idea to plant from scratch, a jungle in sheffield . Ever since i have been a child, i was fascinated by small creatures and then plants. The idea that i might be able to go abroad and see those tropical jungles and those animals and plants was a fantastic idea to me. The first time i flew, i was absolutely terrified. It was a terrible experience for me, and so, i was never going to go to see those jungles, those exciting places. So we moved to sheffield in 1987 from cambridge, and i started to try and reproduce, in my own way, what i thought i might be capable of doing, of producing a Jungle Type Atmosphere in sheffield. It was a long open pitch, just grass, a few trees, with nothing else, so it was an ideal Blank Canvas to try and start that process. Incredible, can i have a look . You certainly can. This is my best bamboo. It is the chinese golden timber bamboo. As you can see, it has really large canes. Incredible. Years ago, we would never have been able to generate size of bamboo like this in sheffield. So this is an example of our Warming Climate . This would not have thrived to this extent 40, 50 years ago . Exactly this is an example of increased Summer Temperatures on the edge of sheffield which we would have never had 40 years ago. The temperatures have soared as such that we can generate these sorts of canes. Let me show you what else we have. It s myjungle this is my Bit Ofjungle which i have generated over the last 20 years or so. You can see it now, it is towering at about 25 feet, and i feel that it is my own little Bit Ofjungle. This is an australasian species, tree fun, but it survives in sheffield, despite some quite Cold Winters. 40 or 50 years ago, it certainly would not have survived the constant Cold Winters that we have. Tree fern. Tell us about your prize species in the garden. It is this snow gum, this eucalypt. I grew it from seed in 1987, and i planted it in the garden as a very small seedling in 1989, and it has watched the garden develop over all these years. I can tell you re really proud of it. Lam. Look at the size of it simon, thank you so much for showing us around your garden, it has been an absolute pleasure. Paul, it has been a pleasure for me too, thank you very much indeed. Quite extraordinary 0k, quite extraordinary ok, now fora look quite extraordinary ok, now for a look at the weather with Thomas Schaaf and echo. The weather is looking pretty good for the most of the uk in the coming days, the weekend are certainly looking largely dry, there ll be some warm, sunny spells and this fine early Summer Weather is going to continue into next week as well. It looks like the early start of the summer has come to an abrupt end across the South East, we can see The Clouds spreading into Rain bearing clouds, but they be showing off into the North Sea over the course of today and internet, simmering around over the course of this evening, but elsewhere across the uk, after all that sunshine, fine evening. A little bit of trial, may be some showers in parts of Northern Ireland and western scotland and they will continue to do so through the night, with lots of clear weather, early hours of saturday, and then that South Eastern portion of the uk, is still waking up to the remnants of today s Rain. 6 degrees in newcastle, 13 in london. Most of us, some somewhere in between. This is the, saturday, you can see we are between weather systems, one across ireland, another in central parts of europe, so most of us should have a fine day. Here is one where the frontier which will bring cloud and in some spots of Rain, may be some heavier bursts of Rain there to the South West of england. Possibly wales as well, some showers as well in Northern Ireland, scotland, but a much better day further east tomorrow, and in fact more centring around for example in norwich and london. Here s sunday morning, lots of sunshine around, Weather Fronts out at bay, you can see in the North Atlantic there, plenty pleasant breezes coming in from the south, a nice day, we can t rule out showers, but for the vast majority of us, it is a dry sunday. Temperatures into the low 20s and southern and central areas, middle high teens in the north. 0n areas, middle high teens in the north. On monday, the high pressure s right across the uk, there is the possibility of some showers, particularly across eastern areas i think early in the week, but the broad message is that we will see warm weather spreading in from the south, right into scandinavia as well, so as far as the aliquots were concerned, if anything over the coming days and into next week, temperatures will actually be rising nationwide and we are talking generally dry weather.
