Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are former pensions minister, baroness Ros Altmann and jason beattie, assistant editor of the daily mirror. They are already up to date with the Front Pages and are raring to go. Lets bring you up to date with what we have so far. The telegraph leads on the resignation of the Education Recovery Commissioner Kevan'>Sir Kevan collins, whos quit in protest over the governments pared down plans to help pupils catch up on their lost learning. The resignation of Kevan'>Sir Kevan collins is also on the Front Page of the mirror it carries a picture of the Prime Minister with children in the garden of number ten earlier today. The independent reports on the Prime Ministers comment that lifting all Lockdown Restrictions on 21 June is threatened by ambiguous data. According to the Daily Mail foreign holidays could be under threat because minister are worried about a new covid variant, thought to have originated in nepal. The times says that an investigation has been launched into the growing number of parliamentary groups that can give Lobbyists Access to westminster. On the Front Page of The Guardian a europe wide project reveals the psychological and socioeconomic scars the pandemic may be leaving on millions of young people. So lets begin. Jason, a fear of giving you an easy start to this paper review, do you want to kick us off this time . Lets share this round. Ros started last time. Borisjohnson doesnt expect some pathetic coverage on the mirror but here is not getting a lot of sympathetic coverage on any of the papers. It does feel like a sort of something that should somehow have been avoidable. Of something that should somehow have been avoidable. Well, i kind of understand what have been avoidable. Well, i kind of understand what is have been avoidable. Well, i kind of understand what is going have been avoidable. Well, i kind of understand what is going on have been avoidable. It is there a bit of a I Danger with this if you set this not yet. It is there a bit of a danger with this if you set this guy out, everybody in the education well thinks he is a good bloke, he get quite a lot of credibility politically with some people being sceptical like some of the unions, and perhaps sceptical like some of the unions, and perhaszohnson, and because of the way things are done in this sequencing, which is a political or democratic being, you lose all of that political capital even if you end up is still getting the policy you want. I end up is still getting the Policy Ou want. ~ ,. ,. ,. , you want. I think it is a shame that this has been you want. I think it is a shame that this has been announced you want. I think it is a shame that this has been announced in you want. I think it is a shame that this has been announced in the you want. I think it is a shame that| this has been announced in the way it has. The Government Couldve said we are working on the programme which i think they probably are. Even robert hofmann, conservative mp, who is chair of the education select committee, has also waited saying that we needed a properly resourced radical long Term Plan and funding. So it is quite clear that parliament will not stand for this being the only money that goes and i dont believe the chancellor expects that but he is saying that he wants to work it into the autumn spending review, maybe he wanted to make a big announcement later in the year. I am not sure. But certainly so far the uk has not committed enough money. Apparently an amounts to about £300 per pupil over the next three years. Compared with the us, which is like that investing 1600 per pupil and the netherlands, two and half thousand per pupil. Clearly after the Prime Minister and the Education Secretary are both have said they are hopeful that there will be more money coming and more will be more money coming and more will be more money coming and more will be done. We need to make sure that does happen. Having said that, i dont believe any problem can be solved radically and quicklyjust putting huge sums of money. And i know that we have to learn lesson from what has worked well and that makes sense to me. When you are spending public money you want to make sure you are doing get in the right way. But this has been a bit of a pr disaster today. It is a real shame because we have to get education right. It is absolutely vital for our children and their future and their country possibly future and their country possibly future that we make sure that the terrible effects of the pandemic are not going to be the long lasting scars that they can be, as we dont help people sketch up. Scars that they can be, as we dont help people sketch up. Looks like we ma have help people sketch up. Looks like we may have got help people sketch up. I must admit, i find this to some extent holiday. I must admit, i find this to some extent quite holiday. I must admit, i find this i to some extent quite exasperating. The idea here is to protect the public and to protect the nhs so it is not overwhelmed and that we stop the enormous number of deaths that we saw at the beginning of this pandemic. But actually we have been very successful at all of this. The vaccines that have been developed which is the most tremendous achievement of science and a british scientist to some degree of course as well, plus the roll out of the vaccine, has succeeded in squashing the impact on the house with Hospital System and deaths. So that the vast majority of people who are getting ill are those who havent yet had been vaccinated and we are rolling out the vaccine at pace and at scale, so i really sort of feel that the Holiday Industry and people who are desperate to go on holiday or desperate to go abroad to see if family or they need to travel for the mental well being, they will be struggling alongside of course the Travel Industry which is then so much to try and accommodate all the changes that have been thrown at it for the past 16 months or so. And suddenly, you are saying nothing is as it seems for very long. We have a hokey cookie policy. One in this country in his and in the next Day Or Outcome or shake it all about. There is talk that perhaps countries will go on a watchlist and at least gives people a bit of a chance to plan ahead. Because the spread of coronavirus has been hugely squashed now by the Vaccination Programme in this country. Lets make the most of that success, especially in the summer months. We may head to a difficult winter, who knows, but at the moment, we are able to say that we have been hugely successful and we have been hugely successful and we could help people get back on their feet and stop the country being scared witless every time another variant is discovered because we have seen so far with the variance that it is fine, the vaccine still works. One thing the public need and deserve and i think we in i need and deserve and i think we in parliament want to see is transparency. If a group is running an aapg because it is an important issue to them, that is fine. But people need to know what is happening, who is funding it, and thatis happening, who is funding it, and that is where shining a light on and declaring what is going on with these groups is so important. We have seen a mushrooming of aapg over the last five years, and the number has risen by 40 . They are now 700 of the school. Many of them do really important and worthwhile work. Sometimes it is very small issues but really important issues of social justice, issues but really important issues of socialjustice, and of helping particular groups, which can make a difference, but they are not an official parliamentary bodies. They do give access to westminster, two mps, you can have perceptions in parliament. This Undercurrent Of Intergenerational Strife is deeply troubling i think. For any society. If you think that one generation feels that it had has been treated dreadfully unfairly by other generations, then the whole society suffers. And i understand how young people are feeling. I understand that given what has happened in policies like Quantitative Easing for example, which had been going on since 2008, which as enormously increased the wealth of the wealthiest groups, that tends to be not the younger people, they havent had a chance to accumulate assets yet, while weve also now seen interruptions to education, difficulties on getting on the housing ladder, a lot of ways in which the younger generations feel they havent had the same chances as older ones, may have had, although sometimes i think we have missed sometimes i think we have missed some of the hardships that the older generations one through which they now are reaping the benefits of, but i would like to see a lot more of this idea that we are all supporting each other, and that Government Policy makes sure that groups are not left out and at the moment, by the different groups i love the, but you dont want it to be those that manage to coalesce together, shall not us, fight hardest, are the ones that will get noticed. Its been a busy night of international football across europe. England, scotland and wales have all been in friendly action in preparation for the start of the European Championship in less than two weeks time. Our sports correspondent, katie gornall, watched the action. Excitement is building. Soon england will kick off their European Championship, but this will not be the team that walks out in 11 days time. With no chelsea, united or city players available after their european finals, england still looked fluent against austria in the first half. All that was missing was a goal. Only a handful of players remain from englands last euros, a turnover driven by the emergence of young talent such as bukayo saka. 19 years old, and taking his chance. But here is a sight Fans Wont want to see, trent Alexander Arnold limping off injured. Quite what this means for him is unclear, but it was an unfortunate end to a game that edges england closer to the starting line. Scotland arrived in portugal to face the netherlands low on numbers after the loss of seven players due to covid concerns. What they needed was something to lift them and jack hendry, the centre back, delivered. And how about that . Spurred into action, the dutch responded swiftly as memphis depay, once of manchester united, made his mark. But scotland were not done yet as Kevin Nisbet came off the bench to thump home. That looked to be the winner, but depay would pop up again to take the gloss off what was still a good night for scotland. Facing the toughest test, though, was wales, who were Taking On The World champions france in nice. But this small country has big ambitions and in goal, Danny Ward was more than a match. But then var intervened, a handball was spotted, and Neco Williams punished. Step forward karim benzema. Six years, hes been out of the national team. Welcome back. With ten men, wales were struggling. Eventually, they would succumb as Kylian Mbappe pounced. If that was scrappy, what followed from Antoine Griezmann was sublime. France would score again as it finished 3 0. Wales will surely have better nights than this. Katie gornall, Bbc News. Staying with football. We understand that tottenham have made contact with the former Chelsea Boss Antonio Conte about filling their vacant Managers Position though no offer has been made yet. Contes just guided Inter Milan to their first Serie A title since 2010, but chose to leave the club after talks with the chairman in milan. Tottenham have been without a permanent boss since the Departure Ofjose Mourinho in april. Englands summer of cricket is officially under way, but the Opening Day of their first Test Match with New Zealand didnt exactly go to plan it was the first time that england played in front of a Home Crowd in almost two years, but an unbeaten century from Debutant Devon Conway has put the tourists firmly in control, as Laura Scott reports. Jerusalem plays. A fanfare to greet the return of international cricket and the fans. For some, the start of summer is the 1st ofjune, others a trip to the beach or a pub garden, for the 6,500 here, it is a Test Match. It feels really emotional, actually. Just coming off the tube and the trumpeter playing jerusalem, it really brought it home to me. Its the first time england have played at home in front of spectators since 2019. Today here at lords it will be only a quarter full for what promises, on paper, to be a tight game. England are number three in the world when it comes to test cricket, one place below visitors New Zealand. After a confident start by New Zealands openers it was time to see how one of englands new faces, Ollie Robinson, could cope. Not before some final words of advice from those who have done it for years. Under the london sun, he didnt take long to shine. Catching the inside edge of tom nathan. The Ball Cannoning onto the stumps. And look what it meant to him. First Test Wicket at the home of cricket no sooner had Captain Kane Williamson walked out after lunch, he was heading straight back again. Playing on to give James Anderson his 615th Test Wicket. And there was another for robinson, who trapped Ross Taylor Lbw on 14. But constant and solid throughout the day was another first timer. New zealands Devon Conway who made his mark, becoming only the sixth player to score a Test Century on debut at lloyds. A day for the new boys. Meanwhile, england bowler Ollie Robinson has apologised after historical tweets of a racist and sexist nature were revealed during his debut at lords. He made this statement after the days play. I would like to unreservedly apologise to anybody i have offended, my Team Mates and the game as a whole in what has been a day of Action And Awareness in Fighting Discrimination in the sport. I dont want something that happened eight years ago to diminish efforts of my Team Mates and the ecb as they build many for action with efforts which i fully endorse and support. Wednesday was the hottest day of the year so far, but it will be cooling off a bit in the next few days. Weve had a band of showers moving northwards. Those remaining showers in northern ireland, northern england should soon move northwards into scotland and gradually fade away too. Off to a fairly cloudy start. We should see the Cloud Thinning and breaking and more sunshine arriving in the afternoon. The temperatures are going to be lower across many parts of the country. The remaining heat is stuck across East Anglia and the southeast, perhaps even into lincolnshire too, 26 27 celsius, so still a warm day here. Into the evening, probably still dry with some sunshine, but there is the threat of some showers or longer spells of rain, that could be heavy and thundery, coming up from the continent affecting some Eastern Parts of england, mainly East Anglia and the southeast, a lot of uncertainty about that though. For many other parts of the uk, it looks like its going to be dry with some sunshine. All cloud, perhaps the odd shower perhaps for northern ireland.
