Hello and welcome. Could this be the beginning of The End for Benjamin Netanyahus time as israels longest serving Prime Minister. The country has once again found itself staring down at another deadline to form a government. A key israeli Opposition Party has now backed a Unity Government and that move would unseat mr neta nyahu. The ultra nationalist leader, Naftali Bennett, said hed join a Governing Coalition with the centrist party leader, Yair Lapid who has until wednesday to try and form a new Coalition Government. Translation all parties are | invited to join the government. For the government to succeed, we will all have to share restraint both during the negotiations and later on. Nobody is being asked to give up on their ideology, but everybody will have to make some compromises. Meanwhile, Mr Netanyahu has responded immediately to the plans to create a Unity Government, denouncing Mr Bennett as a liar and saying that a lapid bennett government would weaken israel. Translation i heard Naftali Bennett. Unfortunately, he is again misleading the public. Same lies, same empty slogans on Hate And Division from somebody who helps hatred and division. And also someone who is perpetrating, i must say, the fraud of the century. Our Middle East correspondent, yolande knell, is injerusalem and has been following the latest developments. After an evening of high political drama, israel is closer to ousting its long time leader. But we shouldnt write off Benjamin Netanyahu just yet. Very soon after Naftali Bennett, his formerally, came out announcing that he wasjoining the Unity Government a decision that could see him become the Prime Minister for the next two years, Mr Netanyahu followed up with his own televised statement. And he made a direct appeal to right wing politicians asking them who will look after settlements, who will take the difficult Security Decisions on iran, on the Gaza Strip . And if he can win overjust a couple of the members of parliament well, that could cause this Coalition Government to fail. If it is sworn in, Mr Netanyahu also knows that it will remain incredibly fragile because it brings together politicians from across the political spectrum. They are going to be looking to kick some sensitive issues into the long grass. If he finds himself in opposition, this is something that Mr Netanyu can exploit. Sara hirschhorn is an Assistant Professor in Israel Studies at northwestern university, and author of Zionism And Identity politics. Shejoins me now. What has been the reaction in israel to this possible formation of a coalition to oust netanyahu . I formation of a coalition to oust netanyahu . Formation of a coalition to oust netanyahu . I think the reaction has oust netanyahu . I think the reaction has been oust netanyahu . I think the reaction has been mixed. I oust netanyahu . I think the reaction has been mixed. There are some in israel who after 2. 5 years of almost two and a half years. It is unlikely this block will deliver this. There are those who are keen to see Benjamin Netanyahu Remove from office and others who feel there was a Bait And Switch at there was a Bait And Switch at the ballot box, those who voted for a right Wing Leader and i find they may have left Wing Figures in power or those who voted for the left now find they will have a right wing, Naftali Bennett as Prime Minister, so some there was a sense of disappointment in the results. ~ , , results. Why is this description results. Why is this description of results. Why is this description of a results. Why is this description of a possible coalition being left wing . Yes, this coalition in fact will spend at figure . Yes, this coalition in fact will spend at the figure . Yes, this coalition in i fact will spend at the spectrum from parties to the left to Naftali Bennetts party on the right. I think it is very unlikely this will be a particular left wing coalition, although that wants to smear them. ~ ,. , although that wants to smear them. ,. ,. , them. Why does netanyahu remains a them. Why does netanyahu remains a popular them. Why does netanyahu remains a popular despite l them. Why does netanyahu i remains a popular despite his failings . I remains a popular despite his failinus . ~ , failings . I think the results of last weeks failings . I think the results of last Weeks Escalation i failings . I think the results. Of last Weeks Escalation are the indication of why Benjamin Netanyahu is so successful as the leader because any time to crisis, netanyahu seemed to act decisively and was also able in the minds of both those on the right and left with a sort of restrain other politicians in either hawkish behaviour of pursuing half of action, tempered action in times of crisis. Very briefly, if you will, what is the key thing that needs to change in israeli politics is not the deadlock we are seeing . I think the real concern here is that this Governing Coalition which only has 61 seats and a party will sit outside the formal coalition is very unstable under this Change Block where the anti Benjamin Netanyahu block is a block made up of politicians with wildly divergent ideological perspectives, as well as some pretty big egos so it seems to me that it will not last long and israel may soon find itself any fit election. If israel if it goes to a federal election, probably sooner rather than later fifth election, will be out come be any different . The behaviour is very locked in to Identity Politics voting, people vote for the party they think fits their Ethnic Group and political ideology best under the do not waver from those, which is why for political elections had very similar results at the box. Until the israelis are willing to coalesce around a leader who is going to represent a wide swathe of a genocide, it is difficult to see how we will get a different result in an israeli vote a wide swathe of citizens. India has reported its lowest Covid Case numbers in more than a0 days, with around 165,000 new infections on saturday. During the countrys devastating second wave of the virus, police in delhi, have made more than 350 arrests forfraud, relating to counterfeit medical supplies. Many families have fallen victim to the conmen, offering fake oxygen and drugs, on social media. A senior Police Officer has told the bbc that these are crimes against humanity. From delhi, our international correspondent, 0rla Guerin has more details and her report contains some distressing images. This was delhi in its darkest hour the peak of the second wave in indias capital. Patients gasping for breath. A time of desperate prayers. 0ften u na nswered. Among dwindling supplies, enter the profiteers and the covid conmen. This was one scam among many fire extinguishers sold as Oxygen Cylinders on social media. She was everything to me. She was a friend to me, a sister to me. Im just incomplete without her. Ayana is a lawyer by training but she was ensnared by scammers as she tried to save her mother. The 50 year old businesswoman, seen here in a family video, was fun loving and energetic. When she came down with covid, doctors prescribed injections of the antiviral drug remdesivir. Ayana searched in chemists and hospitals all over the city. We were helpless, totally helpless. I was the one that was driving all over and my hands and my legs were shivering because there was no hope of finding injections. Eventually, she and her father paid five times the normal price for this bought from a supplier whose number was circulating on social media. The remdesivir was fake. The real drug is on the right. They found out too late. Who do you blame for your Mothers Death . Totally, i would say, because of the fake injections, the people who gave us the fake injections. I totally blame them, we totally blame them, so i would say the punishment for murder should be given, the harsh punishment. Punishment is coming for some. This Assembly Line for fake remdesivir was shut down by Delhi Police. Elsewhere, they have detained one man in this case. They have been parading suspects after making about 350 arrests in recent weeks. This Cybercrime Specialist in the indian police for 30 years says hes witnessed a new low. Its very painful to see this situation. You can consider this as A Crime Against Humanity also, mankind also. People are suffering. They are asking you to deliver something to save their life and you are cheating them. The picture here is improving, but if and when india suffers a third wave, covid fraudsters may not be far behind, waiting to prey on the suffering. 0rla Guerin, bbc news, delhi. South africa is increasing its covid 19 restrictions to try and fight a surge in recent infections. A nightly curfew is to be extended meaning nonessential shops, bars and restaurants will be forced to close by 10pm. Courtney bembridge has the details. Facemasks are mandatory in public and the Countrys President , cyril ramaphosa, has announced a limit on indoor and outdoor public gatherings. Further restrictions are necessary to ensure that Health Facilities are not overwhelmed and that lives that could be saved are not lost. The country was hit by A Devastating Second Wave In December and january when a variant emerged, and there are concerns the third wave is following the same trajectory. The situation has also shone a light on south africas lagging Vaccine Roll out. 0nly1. 5 of the countrys 60 Million people have received a vaccine. As the african continent, we are pushing ahead with efforts to expand our Vaccine Manufacturing Capacity with a view to be self sufficient in vaccine production. South africa is one of the countries leading the charge to remove Patent Rights on coronavirus vaccines to help every country manufacture its own supplies. Courtney bembridge, bbc news. A huge manhunt is under way in South West France for a heavily armed former soldier who opened fire on police. Around 30 years old and has a history of domestic violence. From there, an altercation ensued. Neighbours called the police and, when they showed up, the suspect opened fire before fleeing into the nearby woods. You can see one of the Police Cars that was on the receiving end with flat tyres and shattered windows. All this a terrible shock to local residents, who are being urged to stay indoors. This is bbc news, our main story this hour the far right nationalist israeli politician Naftali Bennett says he will work with all his might towards forming a new Unity Government something that would end Benjamin Netanyahus 12 years as Prime Minister. In tennis, the World Number two japan s Naomi Osaka has been fined 15,000 and faces expulsion from the French Open if she continues to refuse to speak to the media. Last week, osaka said on social media, that she would not give any News Conferences during the tournament, writing ive often felt that people have no regard for athletes Mental Health and this rings true whenever i see a Press Conference or partake in one. Grand slam tournaments responded in a statement, by saying should osaka continue to ignore her Media Obligations during the tournament, she would be exposing herself to possible further code of Conduct Infringement consequences including Default And Suspension from future tournaments. And in the last few hours osaka tweeted anger is a lack of understanding. Change makes people uncomfortable. Im joined now by associate professor simon rice, an expert in athlete Mental Health from orygen, at the university of melbourne. Thank you so much for your time. Is It Fairfor Naomi Osaka to face expulsion from these major competitions for refusing to speak to the media . Well, it is really an incredible thing that Naomi Osaka has done in drawing a line in the sand around her Mental Health and for a long time, there has been that assumption that athletes, elite athletes are invulnerable to Mental Health problems and we have data on the last five years to show that is not the case but they may be more vulnerable to Mental Health problems than the general population so the fact she is underscoring this is a significant risk to her own Mental Health is really significant and something to be listened to. Is that there are a real issue here with rocking the boat because a lot of the Prize Money that these top tier athletes get is from the Media Sponsorship. Athletes get is from the Media Sponsorship sponsorship. Under the News Conferences sponsorship. Under the News Conferences are sponsorship. Under the News Conferences are a sponsorship. Under the News Conferences are a part sponsorship. Under the News Conferences are a part of sponsorship. Under the news | conferences are a part of that. There are undoubtedly complexities especially when there are contractual obligations, especially when Naomi Osaka had signposted before not attending his Press Conferences. That was her intention, that was what she was going to do and i suspect there will be many other players of a Athlete Participation who might be feeling similar and calling for changes to actually occur. What is the compromise changes to actually occur. What is the compromise here . Changes to actually occur. What is the compromise here . How. Changes to actually occur. What is the compromise here . How do you ensure that you are the Mental Health of athletes is basically protected and respected but making sure everyone is having to follow the same sorts of rules . I think it is important to have an open discussion about it. There are probably many other athletes feeling very similar. You may be fairly general population, an analogy could be going for the promotion and all of a sudden, you find that you have been unsuccessful for the promotion and a few minutes later, people ask you what you did wrong to mess up not getting a promotion. I think it is something about the recency of the event and not having time to process it particularly puts athletes any difficult spot. And it is notjust athletes, it occurs for coaches and having part of the conversation dashing having him as part of the conversation would be a step to making improvements around athletes Mental Health. Improvements around athletes Mental Health. Improvements around athletes Mental Health. Professor, Thank Ou so Mental Health. Professor, thank you so much Mental Health. Professor, thank you so much for Mental Health. Professor, thank you so much for your Mental Health. Professor, thank you so much for your time. A mountaineerfrom Hong Kong has broken the record for the fastest ascent of everest by a woman. Tsang yin hung reached the top of the world s highest mountain from Base Camp in 25 hours and 50 minutes. That was fast enough to beat the previous record, set by a nepalese climber in 2017, by more than 12 hours. After setting the new record on sunday she said she believes in aiming high. Actually i m kind of relieved and happy because i set this target around four years before and i always share with my students and my friends that if you aim high, then you can achieve high. And from one new Everest Record to another a Chinese Man has scaled the tallest peak in the world, from the nepal side, becoming the first Blind Man In Asia and the third in the world to summit mount everest. Zhang hong who lost his sight at the age of 21 due to glaucoma completed the feat on monday along with three high altitude guides, and returned to the Base Camp three days later. Vanessa o brien is a mountaineer and knows the dangers of climbing mount everest. She became the first woman to reach the world s highest and lowest points and has been assessing her fellow woman climber s achievement. This looks like a legitimate record. This is 68. 7 kilometers roughly from everest Base Camp to the summit and by all accounts, the 25 hours and 50 minutes would break the previous record holder, so it does look like this is a legitimate record that can be entered into the Guinness World records. Of all the things that have happened this season, that is a remarkable achievement, given that this was one that was plagued earlier in the season by covid, where a lot of expeditions cancelled their expeditions early on or were criticised for being there in the first place and taking up Oxygen Tanks and other things that should have gone to nepali hospitals. I mean, you ve climbed everest yourself. Tsang yin hung. Has broken this record by 12 hours. Is that an enormous feat in the context of generally climbing in such a difficult climb . Well, absolutely. First of all, it s not something that most people would do. They don t go to high altitude peaks to break Speed Records because it s dangerous. And for the most part, most climbing involves acclimatisation and people take it slowly, so it s one camp at a time, you know, climbing at trajectory one camp and then descending in an Ascending Manner until you reach camp four and then summit. So it takes a period of six to eight weeks to to climb everest. And just for an Example Everest starts by, say, The End of march and goes until The End of may. But this season, they re extending it tojune 3rd. And there are actually people still on the mountain now, Planning Summits even tonight. Just very briefly, do Records Matter or should it just be about the climb . So it s very hard to have a real Record Today because a lot of the firsts happened a long time ago. You think even the first climb of everest, which we celebrated on may 29th, that was the first ascent of everest for tenzing Norgay And Sir edmund hillary. The 70th Anniversary of that will be in two years time. You know, records are important because they remind you of the hard work and, you know, what can be achieved when you put your effort and hard Work And Training in place. It s also a reminder of Climate Change and to be respectful of those things that won t be there if you re not careful. Having said that, there are real records like what we re seeing with this Hong Kong individual, this female. But then there are sort of those fake records that we all cringe at. And we know the ones which don t seem respectful, the ones in costumes, the ones that don t make sense and and poke fun. And i think we know when we see the difference. So sometimes a real record presents itself and we do want to celebrate. And sometimes it does seem like it s out of place and shouldn t really take place. Mountaineer vanessa o brien. In fact, the temperatures will probably be a degree or so higher. But it won t be sunny absolutely everywhere. An example here from sunday on the scottish coast a lot of Haar And Sea fret out to sea, and we could see a Repeat Performance of that on Bank Holiday monday. This is stubborn cloud, quite often it hugs the coast and sticks around through the course of the day. But inland, it s going to be sunny. The Morning Temperatures will be typically around 7 10 degrees in towns and cities. A little bit fresher out in the countryside. So the Morning Cloud will eventually burn back to the coast as we go through the morning, and then it s clear Blue Skies pretty much nationwide, apart from the aberdeenshire coastline. Could be only 1a degrees, whereas inland we are talking in the low to mid 20s. Another beautiful Bank Holiday monday on the way. The week ahead, this is tuesday into wednesday, we start to see low pressure developing to the south, but it s still far away. That is unsettled weather heading our way, but still On Tuesday we ll see a lot of fine weather across the uk. A Weather Front just approaching ireland, could be a bit more cloud in northern ireland. But essentially, Little Change for most of us On Tuesday. In fact, the peak of the warmth will see temperatures hitting around 26 celsius. That low edges ever closer during wednesday, and you can see showers approaching south Western Parts of the uk. Could be some thunderstorms around as well, very difficult to say exactly where because they could be hit and miss. But the vast majority of the country again enjoying clear, warm, sunny weather. On wednesday, temperatures easily into the 20s, possibly the mid 20s, and, in scotland, up to around 22 celsius for glasgow and edinburgh. How about beyond wednesday . Looks as though it s going to cool off a little bit, but temperatures in some parts of the country will still hover around the 20s, for example in the south. So on the whole, it s not looking bad at all.
