Could this be the beginning of The End for Benjamin Netanyahus time as israels longest serving Prime Minister . The country has once again found itself staring down at another deadline to form a government. A key israeli Opposition Party has now backed a Unity Government and that move would unseat mr neta nyahu. The ultra nationalist leader Naftali Bennett said hed join a Governing Coalition with the centrist party leader, Yair Lapid who has until wednesday to try and form a new Coalition Government. Translation all parties are | invited to join the government. For the government to succeed, we will all have to share restraint both during the negotiations and later on. Nobody is being asked to give up on their ideology, but everybody will have to make some compromises. Meanwhile, Mr Netanyahu has responded immediately to the plans to Create A Unity Government, denouncing Mr Bennett as a liar and saying that a lapid bennett government would weaken israel. Translation i heard Naftali Bennett. Unfortunately, he is again misleading the public. Same lies, same empty slogans on Hate And Division from somebody who helps hatred and division. And also someone who is perpetrating, i must say, the fraud of the century. Our Middle East correspondent, yolande knell, is injerusalem and has been following the latest developments. After an evening of high political drama, israel is closer to ousting its long time leader. But we shouldnt write off Benjamin Netanyahu just yet. Very soon after Naftali Bennett, his Naftali Bennett, his formerally, came out announcing that he wasjoining the Unity Government a decision that could see him become the Prime Minister for the next two years, Mr Netanyahu followed up with his own televised statement. And he made a direct appeal to right wing politicians asking them who will look after settlements, who will take the difficult Security Decisions on iran, on the Gaza Strip . And if he can win overjust a couple of the members of parliament well, that could cause this Coalition Government to fail. If it is sworn in, Mr Netanyahu also knows that it will remain incredibly fragile because it brings together politicians from across the political spectrum. They are going to be looking to kick some sensitive issues into the long grass. If he finds himself in opposition, this is something that Mr Netanyu can exploit. Guy ziv is an Associate Professor of International Relations at American University and has authored books on israeli policy. Hejoins me now from washington. Thank you so much for your time. First of all, netanyahu has extraordinary staying power, so why are Coalition Parties moving now to try and get rid of him . Parties moving now to try and get rid of him . Because israel has been get rid of him . Because israel has been at get rid of him . Because israel has been at a get rid of him . Because israel has been at a stalemate get rid of him . Because israel has been at a Stalemate Nowl get rid of him . Because israel. Has been at a stalemate now for 2. 5 years. They have had a four elections in 2. 5 years and they do not want a fifth one. These are essentially the only option left, to form a new government, an alternative government, what they are calling a change to government, whose primary objective would be to pave the road for the Post Netanyahu Eda or, for selections, which are very few people want. I5 or, for selections, which are very few people want. Is there an issue here very few people want. Is there an issue here that very few people want. Is there an issue here that netanyahul an issue here that netanyahu remains incredibly popular so every election ends up it, essentially, keeping him within reach of para . Essentially, keeping him within reach of para . Netanyahu has reach of para . Netanyahu has reach of para . Netanyahu has reach of power. Reach of para . Netanyahu has reach of power. He reach of para . Netanyahu has reach of power. He has reach of para . Netanyahu has reach of power. He has a reach of power. He has a dedicated and loyal base, just as President Trump had in the united states, but he is not popular with the majority of israelis. In fact, popular with the majority of israelis. Infact, even popular with the majority of israelis. In fact, even at any height of his popularity, he may be enjoyed at something like a0 may be enjoyed at something like 40 45 , may be enjoyed at something like a0 45 , which is may be enjoyed at something like A0 A5 , which is much lower today. The majority of the country has voted time and again for parties aiming to oust the netanyahu and the fact is he was unable to form a coalition after four tries. What about Naftali Bennett himself . He is not a name you would necessarily recognise in israeli politics. Is there Something Special about him in terms of why this is happening now or is itjust the right time, right place . Now or is it just the right time, right place . Basically, he is not time, right place . Basically, he is not well time, right place . Basically, he is not well known time, right place . Basically, he is not well known around | time, right place . Basically,. He is not well known around the world. He is known in israel because he has been a politician for a while. He represents a lot of the settlers and, the religious settlers and, the religious settlers in the west bank. He is not somebody who is particularly popular, not somebody who necessarily even, i would say, deserves this position. He only has seven seats, but he is a kingmaker. He has a split from netanyahu, he was once his chief of staff. He has had a long and contentious relationship with netanyahu. He was his natural political partner for many years and come at this point, decided to go his separate Way And Tojoin Yair Lapid any new government. I do not think he is going to be particularly effective as Prime Minister, he will not be able to pursue his agenda, which includes annexing large parts of the west bank. I do not believe that is going to happen under his watch. Where do you think this is going to end up because this coalition is still quite fragile . Is still quite fragile . Where Do Ou is still quite fragile . Where do you see is still quite fragile . Where do you see the is still quite fragile . Where do you see the sending . I do you see the sending . Festival, there is no correlation yet see this ending. It is too early to write but netting out s political obituary but it looks increasingly likely that we are going to see netanyahu sent to the opposition for the first time in well over a decade. He has been prime and so never over 12 years. So i think what we are likely to see he has been Prime Ministerfor we are likely to see he has been Prime Minister for over 12 years. Were likely to see this government trying to put together a budget, solve problems relating to the day to day concerns of the average is really in terms of health care, transportation and the Bread And Butter issues and stay away from the more controversial issues such as the Peace Process with the palestinian things or annexation of the west bank. I do not believe we will be seeing somatic nerves on that front. I am also sceptical of whether this government is going to mass its full term and i think netanyahu will make every effort going to last its full term. I think he will make every opposition you can as leader of the opposition to sow division, Create A rifts within this correlation and that should not be hard to do and probably aim for another election. A within this coalition. Election. A within this coalition. Election. A within this coalition. , coalition. Interesting times in its really politics, coalition. Interesting times in its really politics, thank coalition. Interesting times in its really politics, thank you l its really politics, thank you so much for your time. In israeli politics. Many families have fallen victim to the conmen offering fake oxygen and drugs on social media. A senior Police Officer has told the bbc that these are crimes against humanity. From delhi, our international correspondent, 0rla Guerin has more details and her report contains some distressing images. This was delhi in its darkest hour. The peak of the second wave in indias capital. Patients gasping for breath. A time of desperate prayers. 0ften u na nswered. Among dwindling supplies, enter the Profiteers Enter the profiteers and the covid conmen. This was one scam among many fire extinguishers sold as Oxygen Cylinders on social media. She was everything to me. She was a friend to me, a sister to me. Im just incomplete without her. Ayana is a lawyer by training but she was ensnared by scammers as she tried to save her mother. The 50 year old businesswoman, seen here in a family video, was fun loving and energetic. When she came down with covid, doctors prescribed injections of the antiviral drug remdesivir. Ayana searched in chemists and hospitals all over the city. We were helpless, totally helpless. I was the one that was driving all over and my hands and my legs were shivering because there was no hope of finding injections. Eventually, she and herfather paid five times the normal price for this, bought from a supplier whose number was circulating on social media. The remdesivir was fake. The real drug is on the right. They found out too late. Who do you blame for your Mothers Death . Totally, i would say, because of the fake injections, the people who gave us the fake injections. I totally blame them, we totally blame them, so i would say the punishment for murder should be given, the harsh punishment. Punishment is coming for some. This Assembly Line for fake remdesivir was shut down by Delhi Police. Elsewhere, they have detained one man in this case. They have been parading suspects after making about 350 arrests in recent weeks. This Cybercrime Specialist in the indian police for 30 years says hes witnessed a new low. Its very painful to see this situation. You can consider this as A Crime Against Humanity also, mankind also. People are suffering. They are asking you to deliver something to save their life and you are cheating them. The picture here is improving, but if and when india suffers a third wave, covid fraudsters may not be far behind, waiting to prey on the suffering. 0rla Guerin, bbc news, delhi. Let 5 get some of the days other news. The man, believed to be in his 30s and with a history of domestic violence, reportedly attacked his former partners new boyfriend. The local government has urged residents to stay indoors. Australias Victoria State has reported five new Covid I9 cases half way through a week long lockdown there. The infections now total a5 in the latest cluster, including a worker at a Melbourne Care Home where not all of the residents have been vaccinated. Voters in croatias capital, zagreb, have elected a new mayor in a Watershed Run Off Election in which neither of the countrys mainstream parties was represented. The victor, a green left candidate, tomislav tomasevic, took two thirds of the vote. He defeated the right wing nationalist former folk singer, miroslav skoro. Mr tomasevic described his victory as a mandate for real change. South africa is increasing its Covid I9 restrictions to try and fight a surge in recent infections. Stay with us on bbc news, still to come aiming high the climberfrom Hong Kong whos become the fastest woman to climb everest. This is bbc news, the latest headlines the far right nationalist israeli politician Naftali Bennett says he will work with all his might towards forming a new Unity Government something that would end Benjamin Netanyahus 12 years as Prime Minister. Its been described as A Crime Against Humanity the conmen offering fake oxygen and fake drugs to the desperate in india who are battling covid. In tennis, the World Number two japan s Naomi 0saka has been fined 15,000 and faces expulsion from the French Open if she continues to refuse to speak to the media. Last week, 0saka said on social media, that she would not give any News Conferences during the tournament, writing ive often felt that people have no regard for athletes Mental Health and this rings true whenever i see a Press Conference or partake in one. Grand slam tournaments responded in a statement, by saying should 0saka continue to ignore her Media Obligations during the tournament, she would be exposing herself to possible further code of Conduct Infringement consequences including Default And Suspension from future tournaments. And in the last few Hours 0saka tweeted anger is a lack of understanding. Change makes people uncomfortable. Craig gabriel is a Veteran Tennis Commentator is in paris covering the French Open. He says the response from tournament organisers has been appropriate to 0sakas behaviour. Theyre taking the right course of action. This is the only course of action that they can take to tell her that if she continues to behave and act in this matter it could lead to suspension. Because these fines will build up and build up. She was fined 15,000 today, which is on the upper echelons of fines. And you will remember Novak Djokovic was fined i think, 20,000 at last years us open. But this cannot continue. The way she has done this is premeditated. We do have some situations where players have lost a major match and they decided to skip a post media conference. But this is different, completely different. And its not up to her to make the decisions as to what the rules are to apply to herself. So she needs to think about this and you dont want it to get to a situation where she is suspended because thats not going to help the game, and definitely not going to help Naomi 0saka. Craig gabriel. A mountaineerfrom Hong Kong has broken the record for the fastest ascent of everest by a woman. Tsang yin hung reached the top of the worlds highest mountain from Base Camp in 25 hours and 50 minutes. That was fast enough to beat the previous record, set by a nepalese climber in 2017, by more than 12 hours. After setting the new record on sunday, she said she believes in aiming high. Actually im kind of relieved and happy because i set this target around four years before and i always share with my students and my friends that if you aim high, then you can achieve high. And from one new Everest Record to another a Chinese Man has scaled the tallest peak in the world, from the nepal side, becoming the first Blind Man In Asia and the third in the world to summit mount everest. Zhang hong who lost his sight at the age of 21 due to glaucoma completed the feat on monday along with three high altitude guides, and returned to the Base Camp three days later. Translation no matter if you are disabled or not, whether you have lost your eyesight or you have no legs or hands, it doesnt matter as long as you have a strong mind, you can always complete the thing that other people cannot. Vanessa obrien is a mountaineer and knows the dangers of climbing mount everest. She became the first woman to reach the worlds highest and lowest points and has been assessing her fellow woman climber s achievement. This looks like a legitimate record. This is 68. 7 kilometers roughly from everest Base Camp to the summit and by all accounts, the 25 hours and 50 minutes would break the previous record holder, so it does look like this is a legitimate record that can be entered into the Guinness World records. Of all the things that have happened this season, that is a remarkable achievement, given that this was one that was plagued earlier in the season by covid, where a lot of expeditions cancelled their expeditions early on or were criticized for being there in the first place and not and taking up Oxygen Tanks and other things that should have gone to nepali hospitals. I mean, youve climbed everest yourself. She has broken this record by 12 hours. Is that an enormous feat in the context of generally climbing in such a difficult climb . Well, absolutely. First of all, its not something that most people would do. They dont go to high altitude peaks to break speed records because its dangerous. And for the most part, most climbing involves acclimateisation and people take it slowly, so its one camp at a time, you know, slowly, one camp and then descending in in a ascending manner until you reach camp four and then summit. So it takes a period of six to eight weeks to to climb everest. And just for an example of restarts by, say, The End of march and goes until The End of may. But this season, theyre extending it to june 3rd. And there are actually people still on the mountain now, Planning Summits even tonight. Just very briefly, do Records Massow is should itjust be about the climb . So its very hard to have a real Record Today because a lot of the firsts happened a long time ago. Even the first climb of everest, which we celebrated on may 29th, that was the first ascent of everest for tenzing Norgay And Sir edmund hillary. The 78th Anniversary of that will be in two years time. You know, records are important because they remind you of the hard work and you know what can be achieved when you when you put your effort and hard Work And Training in place. Its also a reminder of Climate Change and to be respectful of those things that wont be there if youre not careful. Having said that, there are real records like what were seeing with this Hong Kong individual, this female. But then there are sort of those fake records that we all cringe at. And we know the ones which dont seem respectful, the ones in costumes, the ones that dont make sense and and poke fun. And and i think we know when we see the difference. So sometimes a real record presents itself and we do want to celebrate. And sometimes it doesnt seem or it does seem like its out of Place And Shouldnt really take place. The three peaks challenge, in which walkers tackle the highest points of scotland, england and wales one after the other is one of britains most popular endurance events. But three climbs arent enough for one pair of fitness enthusiasts, who are planning to throw in a fourth Alison Freeman reports. Theyre home for around six weeks. Katherine and martin will eat, sleep and travel on this Rowing Boat between the four nations of the united kingdom, before taking on their highest peaks on foot a challenge thats never been attempted before. So this is our cabin. Theres just enough legroom to be able to lie down. And im here, martins here, so its pretty cosy. Its the idea of katherine wilkins, who runs a Fitness Centre in northumberland. Despite the mammoth challenge ahead, she managed to get martin, who works for her, on board. I like to try things that no ones ever done before. When katherine mentioned it to me, that shes got this challenge in mind and no ones ever completed it, i was instantly, yes, im there, im doing it. The pair will start their challenge by climbing Mount Snowdon in wales before walking to caernarfon. Theyll then row to whitehaven, and from there walk up to the summit of scafell pike. After walking back to the coast, Theyll Cross the Irish Sea to northern ireland, where theyll tackle slieve donard. Theyll then take on the longest Rowing Leg of their expedition, by Sea And Canal to Fort William in the highlands of scotland. There, theyll climb ben nevis. The Irish Sea has a lot of challenges. Its got shipping lanes. It can be horrendously tidal and choppy, so we have everything crossed for a high Pressure System and a gentle crossing, but were not under any illusions. The pair will be raising money for the Mental Health charity mind. Me being a former marine, a veteran of the marines, some lads who leave struggle a lot with Mental Health, including myself. So when ijoined the forces, the forces was my family. And then to go from that to civilian life is a bit of a shock. Its hard, really, to find that purpose, of where you stand in civilian life and what gets you up in the morning. Ijust want people to be able to talk about it, the benefits of being outside and pushing yourselves physically, and the benefits that can have on Mental Health. You are really going to be pushing yourself physically, arent you . Yes, i think we are we are definitely going to be pushing ourselves physically, and, you know, were probably talking 16, 17 Hours Rowing a day. Stay with bbc news. Clear and calm out there across most of the uk, and Bank Holiday monday promises to be another warm and sunny day. In fact, the temperatures will probably be a degree or so higher. But it wont be sunny absolutely everywhere. An example here from sunday on the scottish coast a lot of Haar And Sea fret out to sea, and we could see a Repeat Performance of that on Bank Holiday monday. This is stubborn cloud, quite often it hugs the coast and sticks around through the course of the day. But inland, its going to be sunny. The Morning Temperatures will be typically around 7 10 degrees in towns and cities. A little bit fresher out in the countryside. So the Morning Cloud will eventually burn back to the coast as we go through the morning, and then its clear Blue Skies pretty much nationwide, apart from the aberdeenshire coastline. Could be only 1a degrees, whereas inland we are talking in the low to mid 20s. Another beautiful Bank Holiday monday on the way. The week ahead, this is tuesday into wednesday, we start to see low pressure developing to the south, but its still far away. That is unsettled weather heading our way, but still On Tuesday well see a lot of fine weather across the uk. A Weather Front just approaching ireland, could be a bit more cloud in northern ireland. But essentially, Little Change for most of us On Tuesday. In fact, the peak of the warmth will see temperatures hitting around 26 celsius. That low edges ever closer during wednesday, and you can see showers approaching south Western Parts of the uk. Could be some thunderstorms around as well, very difficult to say exactly where because they could be hit and miss. But the vast majority of the country again enjoying clear, warm, sunny weather. On wednesday, temperatures easily into the 20s, possibly the mid 20s, and, in scotland, up to around 22 celsius for glasgow and edinburgh. How about beyond wednesday . Looks as though its going to cool off a little bit, but temperatures in some parts of the country will still hover around the 20s, for example in the south. So on the whole, its not looking bad at all. This is bbc news, the headlines far right nationalist israeli politician Naftali Bennett says Hell Work with all his might towards forming a new Unity Government, something that would end Benjamin Netanyahus 12 years as Prime Minister. Mr bennett threw his support behind Yair Lapid, who is trying to form a government.
