Celebrations for Chelsea Fans after their team wins the Champions League final against Manchester City to lift the European Cup for a second time. Neighbours reunited the leaders of australia and new Zealand Meet for talks for the first time in 15 months after Coronavirus Border restrictions are lifted between the two countries. And borisjohnson marries his fiancee, Carrie Symonds, in a secret ceremony at westminster cathedral. Hello and welcome if youre watching in the uk or around the world. The head of the group which represents Nhs Trusts in england has given a warning about the pressures hospitals are facing. Chris hopson of nhs providers says theyre dealing with a backlog of cases and a big rise in demand for urgent care and even small increases in Covid Patients could put them under intense strain. He says the government must have an open debate with the public about plans for a further easing of restrictions onjune the 21st. Ministers say theyll make a final decision on the 14th. Heres our Health Correspondent katharine da costa. Londons twickenham stadium, now a Surge Vaccination Centre ready to deliver 15,000 doses on Bank Holiday monday as the extra push to vaccinate as many people as possible continues. But despite the more infectious variant first detected in india, so far, hospitals havent seen a spike in admissions. Trust leaders in some of englands worst affected areas say most Covid Patients are unvaccinated, either because they are younger and not yet been invited for a jab, or hadnt taken up the offer a clear sign, they say, the vaccines are working. But nhs providers warns hospitals are still under pressure with trusts working flat out to reduce record Waiting Lists for non urgent operations. Theres also been an increase in demand for urgent care. Doctors think significant numbers of patients have been putting off seeking treatment and now require more complex care and longer stays. Some trusts in Holiday Areas also worry an influx of tourists will leave them struggling to cope. 0ne Chief Executive on the South Coast said. Ahead of any decision to lift the remaining legal restrictions in england Onjune 21st, nhs providers wants the government to lead an informed debate on the Trade Offs that need to be made. It points out that while vaccines are helping to break the link between infection, serious illness and death, there are still many more people to vaccinate. Katharine da costa, Bbc News. Mr hopson says hospitals face increasing pressures from non Covid Patients. The pressure is coming from the fact that theres three things going on at once at the moment. Weve got these Big Care Backlogs that we are trying to get through as quickly as possible and we are tackling the most complex cases to start with and it means those patients need to have overnight stays because they are difficult cases. The second thing thats happening is we think there are significant numbers of people who have put off coming into hospital and actually have now reached the stage where they must come in and get treatment, but because they have left it so long, it means that the treatment required will take longer and its more complex. The third bit is, yes, in those areas where in those areas where we are seeing an uptick, its a small uptick, in covid 19 pressures, it is adding to the pressure as well. 0ur political Correspondent Nick Eardley said the government is facing pressure on two fronts, on their handling of the pandemic last year, and how it proceeds this summer. Weve had the Vaccines Minister, nadim zawahi, on the Andrew Marr show this morning insisting that the government did all it could to protect Care Homes. There have been a lot of allegations over the last few days that promises were made about testing people going from hospitals back to Care Homes to free Up Space in hospitals at the start of the pandemic. Dominic cummings, who was a former aide in downing street, made that allegation this week. The government continues to insist it did what it could, that it put a protective ring, as it puts it, around Care Homes. But you do get the impression that theyre under intense pressure over this and these questions over whether enough was done are going to keep coming. And theyre also, i think, starting to feed into the debate about what the government does injune. So next month, the next Big Uneasing in england is supposed to be Onjune 21st, when pretty much all restrictions are lifted. Now, there is some concern in government about the spread of The Indian Variant. And i think the pressure the governments been under over the last few days over potentially not acting quickly enough in the past is adding to the pressure on it to perhaps have a think about whether everything thats supposed to happen Onjune 21st actually happens. Have a listen to the Vaccines Ministerfrom the Uk Government, Nadim Zahawi, who was asked whether the success of the Roll Out of the vaccine in the uk was enough. We hope to be able to protect with two doses, all 1 9, all the over 50s, before june 21st. We will make sure we vaccinate at scale. But, and heres the important thing, we will share the evidence with the country on June 14th to basically explain exactly where we are on infection rates, on hospitalisation and, of course, sadly, of death. So thats the things the government is going to weigh up over the next couple of weeks. I mean, just to spell out what happens. Cos im sure a lot of people will be interested in the calculations that are going on. There is data coming to the government all the time about the various things that Nadim Zahawi was just talking about there. That is going to continue to happen. Every time i speak to anyone in government aboutjune 21st, the thing the they all say is, weve not made decisions yet, we cant make decisions until we see more of that data. So at the moment, its just too early to say Whetherjune 21st goes ahead, its kind of up in the air. One thing we will get this week is potentially a bit more information on foreign travel from the uk potentially to parts of europe and maybe islands, European Islands have been talked about as potentially another part of the green list, the places youre allowed to go without quarantining some data on that being delivered in the next few days, i would expect some sort of announcement this week. Joining me now to discuss this is dr katherine henderson, president of the royal college of emergency medicine, which is an independent Association Of Emergency Physicians that sets standards of training and administers examinations for emergency medicine. Too good to talk to you, lord is at play here. On the precious hospitals are facing, can you give a sense of what your members have been feeding Back To You . Mil what your members have been feeding back to ou . . , what your members have been feeding Back To You . Back to you . All our departments are extremely busy Back To You . All our departments are extremely busy. We Back To You . All our departments are extremely busy. We are Back To You . All our departments are extremely busy. We are beginning i Back To You . All our departments are extremely busy. We are beginning to | extremely busy. We are beginning to see the signs that we see in a normal winter which are not good science, having problems off loading ambulances and getting patients moved out of the department. So we have crowded departments which are inherently risky when youve still got a circulating virus like covid. I visited a couple of hospitals during the pandemic myself, ive seen staff exhausted, departments and makeshift rooms is the fear here that it could get worse, given The Indian Variant and the data lagged on that . So The Indian Variant and the data lagged on that . The indian variant and the Data Lac ued on that . ,. , lagged on that . So at the moment, we are not seeing lagged on that . So at the moment, we are not seeing lots lagged on that . So at the moment, we are not seeing lots of lagged on that . So at the moment, we are not seeing lots of patients are not seeing lots of patients coming in with covid, but the fact that youve got any transmission in the community means all the Infection Prevention and control measures that you have to have in place have to still be there as strongly as before, which means that we have a problem with Bed Capacity we have do socially distance, we cant have the elastic walls that Emergency Departments have been traditionally allowed to have, when there is a danger of infection. We havent got the footprint that we had during the pandemic, because of all the other work that needs to go on. We are trying to get the elective backlog managed, and therefore wards that were being used for Covid Patients are having to revert to being surgical wards. Now, if we have an upsurge in covid, which would be such a disaster, we will need those wards again to take Covid Patients, and we will be having problems again. fin Covid patients, and we will be having problems again. On that backlou , having problems again. On that backlog. Nhs having problems again. On that backlog, nhs providers having problems again. On that backlog, nhs providers referencing the patients who have left treatment too long, they now need more complex procedures what would your message be to those patients . We procedures what would your message be to those patients . Be to those patients . We have said to atients be to those patients . We have said to patients all be to those patients . We have said to patients all through be to those patients . We have said to patients all through this, be to those patients . We have said to patients all through this, please | to patients all through this, please come with serious symptoms. If you have something that is bothering you, do get in touch. But chris is right and Emergency Departments cannot necessarily expedite, you know, an operation, those patients may be on the Waiting List for an operation and are presenting either to the gp or an Emergency Department because they have ongoing symptoms, and so i would be saying it is not just a debate about the 21st of june, there needs to be a debate about how we are going to manage the concurrent workload of unscheduled care and elective care going forward within the nhs. Because everyone is extremely busy, we have a Training Backlog for our staff, we have a tired staff, and it is notjust about what happens on the 21st of june. About what happens on the 21st of june. ,. , june. One more, Ifi May The vaccines june. One more, Ifi May The Vaccines Minister june. One more, Ifi May The Vaccines Minister has june. One more, Ifi May The Vaccines Minister has confirmed this morning the government is considering Making Covid Vaccines Compulsory for nhs staff, how do you feel about that, given the message from labour is that threatening staff is not a good idea and they highlight the Recruitment Crisis within the nhs at the moment . I think it would be a great shame if we were going down the mandatory route. Everybody has a professional obligation to keep the patience safe, but we ought to be able to explain and encourage and make people understand why vaccination is the right thing to do, and make sure that people are working in an environment that is safe for them. Vaccination is only one part of that, we need to make sure staff of the ppe they need, the social Distancing Capacity in non clinical areas, you know, is there enough changing room space, is there a Coffee Room . There are other obligations on the Health Service to provide an appropriate environment, other than just mandating the vaccine. The newly elected leader of the Democratic Unionist Party has accused the eu of using Northern Ireland as a plaything to punish the uk for brexit. Edwin poots told the Andrew Marr show on Bbc One that Eu Officials were playing Fast And Loose with the Peace Process and the northern Ireland Protocol was having a devastating impact. Were going to have 15,000 checks per week of goods from great britain coming into Northern Ireland, so more checks at the Port Of Belfast than there is in rotterdam, europes biggest port. We have more checks between great britain and Northern Ireland than there is between russia, ukraine, belarus, moldova all those countries in the eastern part of the european union. And im asking the question of the european union, are they more trustworthy Trading Partners than great britain . And of course that isnt the case, so we really need to ditch the Protocol And Ease checks, because theyre hugely damaging to the lowest paid workers anywhere in the united kingdom in Northern Ireland. European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic rejected the accusations. He urged the british government to be more willing to look at the solutions being offered, which he said could lead to an eradication of most of the checks. If you want even a better example how we can get rid of 80 of possible checks of goods and animals arriving to Northern Ireland, lets go for the veterinary agreement, which we have, for example, with switzerland. I understand the point of the uk that the united kingdom wants to have the freedom to sign another free trade agreement, and its absolutely fine, but we know that all these agreements take time to be negotiated and to be approved, so i have offered to have this Switzerland Type veterinary agreement on a temporary basis, which would help us to bridge over the current problems, which would get rid of 80 of checks. Its an even bigger one to bite your way through and make it all the way to the cup. Its a fantastic achievement, congratulations to everybody. Some commiserations for Manchester City. Theyve spent fortunes reaching their first Champions League final, but still the big prize eludes them. For now, the European Cup is heading back to england and to chelsea. Blue really is the colour. Tim allman, Bbc News. 0ur Sport Correspondent 0lly Foster is in porto. He said last nights celebrations were restricted by bar curfews. By the time the match finished, and chelsea and Manchester City fans got to the centre of town, all the bars had shut and there was a curfew at half past ten. That is what the authorities decided to do around this match, but it has been fantastic for the best part of two or three days, all those fans finding a way to get here. What we have seen here behind us, we came down and wondered where to go first thing in the morning, why dont we go down to the Big Inflatable Champions League trophy where all the selfies are taken . And as we got here, they took the air out of it, which kind of sums up the State Of Mind of Manchester City this morning but what a performance for chelsea. They were probably the slight underdogs yesterday. Im joined by dan silver, of the chelsea supporters trust. Hi, dan. 0lly saying it has gone incredibly well for chelsea, it certainly has. If we look back to january when Frank Lampard was sacked, what an achievement in a short period of time, he galvanised the players, and i Knockout Phase wasjust the players, and i Knockout Phase was just faultless, we played some really good teams and put on a fantastic Show Yesterday to nullify a very good Manchester City side. Thomas tuchel up against pep guardiola, who has been there and done it before of course, although not with Manchester City. Thomas tuchel, what makes him such a good manager in the short space of time you have got to know him . Tactically, he is very sound, he said the team up very well, if you look at the games he has been in charge, he has let in very few shots, apart from the West Brom game, which was an anomaly. I ust wanted to get fl he has brought two matches. I ust wanted to get your i he has brought two matches. Pleasure, have a good day new Zealand And Australias relative success in fighting the Coronavirus Pandemic has been on show as the countries leaders held in person meetings without wearing masks. Jacinda ardern and Scott Morrison discussed how to further ease tough covid 19 border controls. Its the first time the two leaders have met since a quarantine free Travel Corridor opened between new Zealand And Australia last month. Phil mercer, whos in sydney, has been following the story. This is a discussion between prime Minister Ardern and her australian counterpart, Scott Morrison, and trying to highlight the relative success of those two countries in combating the pandemic. And also about an exit strategy. Both countries have shut their borders to most foreign nationals, and if you look at the figures, about 30,000 Confirmed Coronavirus cases here in australia and about 2,700 in New Zealand, these figures are pretty good compared to many, many other countries. And what we have heard today, that Trans Tasman Travel bubble that opened on the 19th of april, australia is hoping it could soon be extended to other parts of the pacific, including the archipelago of Fiji And Vanuatu and perhaps other Island Nations as well. This is all about australia and New Zealand trying to chart a way to reconnect with the rest of the world, but it will be a slow process, and as you say, the Prime Ministers meeting without masks in a way to highlight what these two countries have done since the pandemic began.
