Theres been international outrage at belarus, after a Ryanair Flight travelling between two eu capitals was forced to divert there following claims of a bomb threat. A Journalist On Board whos criticised belarus s president lukashenko was detained. The Chief Executive of ryanair, michael 0leary, has called it a state sponsored hijacking. The Ryanair Flight Left Athens for the Lithuanian Capital Vilnius at 8. 30 yesterday morning. Just before it reached vilnius it was ordered to divert to the belarussian Capital Minsk by Belarus Air Traffic Control a fighterjet was sent to escort it down. After the plane landed, Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend were taken away by belarussian security services. After a lengthy wait the Flight Leftjust before 7pm uk time, and landed in vilnius at 7. 25 more than seven hours late. The Uk Government has ordered planes to avoid Belarus Airspace and has suspended flights from the national airline. It looks tonight as if the eu will follow suit. Lithuania has advised its citizens to get out of belarus. Heres our europe correspondentjean mckenzie. Armed police greet the arrivals on board the Plane Belarus is accused of hijacking. All to capture this young man, Roman Protasevich, a journalist and political refugee. He fled belarus two years ago, only to be forced back home yesterday under the most extraordinary circumstances by a regime he told his fellow passengers would execute him. One woman pleads with people to stay calm. As roman was led away, passengers say he was shaking. How scared he was . Super scared. I looked at him directly into his eyes and it was very sad. His father has described his sons capture as a terrorist act. Translation We Hope that he will cope. We hope that he will stay himself, not give in to any of their tricks. We are afraid to even think about it. But its possible he could be beaten and tortured. The Chief Executive of ryanair this Morning Spoke of his anger. This was a case of state sponsored. It was a state sponsored hijacking, state sponsored piracy. I think it was very frightening for the crew, for the passengers who were held under armed guard, had their bags searched. Roman is wanted by authorities for running an opposition News Channel on the social media platform telegram. Its used to organise protests in belarus and to broadcast them. The protests exploded during last Summers Election when belarus s long time Leader President lukashenko claimed yet another disputed victory. Back then we witnessed peaceful protesters being dragged off the streets of the capital. Since, Hundreds Ofjournalists and opposition politicians have been imprisoned. Roman is the latest target. They endangered the lives of 171 passengers just because of Roman Protasevich. And we were sure that to fly between two un Member States is safe but it turned out that its not. Speaking in the House Of Commons earlier, the Foreign Secretary said Mr Lukashenko s government must be held accountable for its reckless behaviour. The scenario, as reported, is a shocking assault on civil aviation and an assault on international law. It represents a danger to civilian flights everywhere. Europes leaders are meeting in brussels this evening to decide what exactly the consequences for hijacking an Eu Flight should be. There has been a lot of outrage and a lot of tough talk. But now the pressure is on for them to find some tangible way to punish or weaken belarus ausmat government. Already airlines have started to avoid belarus s airports and airspace, deciding detours are worth delays. Belarus s government. Lets get the latest from our correspondent Sarah Rainsford in moscow. Youve been speaking to the Journalist Roman Protasevichs Father what did he have to say . Dmitri was distressed but also very angry and describe what happened to his son. He said he was living in the eu and felt protected and never imagined anything like this could have happened to him. He said he and his wife had heard nothing from roman, didnt know where he was or what was happening to him but were extremely worried that he could be being abused, beaten, even tortured, as has happened to other belarussian detainees from the opposition in the past. So he was really appealing to western politicians to put all the pressure they possibly could on minsk to set roman free. I think dimitri also wanted to use this interview to come and wanted this incident, what has happened to his son, to shine a light on what is happening in belarus, as he put it, right at the heart of europe in the 21st century. For months there were massive Street Protests there which at one point appeared like they might sweep Alexander Lukashenko from power after 26 years at the top in belarus. But of course, critically, with the kremlin s backing and also with the Security Forces still on his side, Mr Lukashenko survived in power. I think what happened to Roman Protasevich shows just what extreme lengths still lukashenko is prepared to go to to stay there. To go to to stay there. Sarah rainsford to go to to stay there. Sarah rainsford in to go to to stay there. Sarah rainsford in moscow, to go to to stay there. Sarah rainsford in moscow, thank| to go to to stay there. Sarah rainsford in moscow, thank you. The former head of formula 0nes governing body, Max Mosley, who went on to become a privacy campaigner, has died aged 81. Son of the british Fascist Leader 0swald mosley, he hit the headlines outside his Racing Career when the News Of The World wrongly published a story alleging he had taken part in a nazi themed orgy. Mr mosley won £60,000 in damages for Libel And Invasion of privacy and went on to campaign vigorously for tighter press regulation. Our Home Editor Mark easton looks back at his life. Max mosley was many things. A Racing Driver who went on to run motorsport, a barrister who helped change britains laws on privacy and a suave Family Man with a secret double life. He was the son of 0swald mosley, leader of the british union of fascists, and his mother, lady diana, described by one newspaper is an unrepentant nazi. All my life, ive had hanging over me my antecedents, my parents, Max Mosley once said. He went into motor racing, a world where people didnt care about his parental background. He briefly competed as a driver before concluding he wasnt quick enough and, instead, helped start the Car Manufacturer March engineering and became a representative on the Formula One constructors association. His abilities and charm made him an effective advocate and, in the 1990s, he became head of the fia, the body representing the interests of motorsport. It was a role he held for 16 years. Today, former Formula One Boss Bernie Ecclestone said, its like losing family, like losing a brother. He did a lot of good things, he was very good in making sure he was very good in making sure people built cars that were safe. In 2008, while still head of the fia, the news of the World Newspaper splashed a story claiming mosley had been involved in a Sex Act involving five women, one of whom was wearing a military uniform. Although his Wife And Family knew nothing of his penchant for sadomasochism, mosley was unashamed and took the paper to court for breach of privacy, and won. Ive been doing this for 45 years and there had never been a hint, nobody knew. Mosley then took the Uk Government to the European Court of human rights, arguing newspapers should warn people before exposing their private lives. He lost, but the Case Led him to use some of his considerable Family Fortune to support victims of the Fleet Street Phone hacking scandal. Max mosley is effectively the author of modern privacy law. His case, which he brought against the News Of The World, and his subsequent supporting of hacked off will be seen, i think, in the future as a golden thread that actually led to where we are with privacy today. Max mosley had the money and the attributes to change things. He flirted with politics, working with the conservatives in the 80s and later supporting Labour Politicians like tom watson, with a donation of £500,000. But he will probably be remembered for his defence of his colourful sex life. Their nazi lie was completely invented. Its a perfectly harmless activity, he said, provided its between Consenting Adults who want to do it, are of sound mind and its in private. Max mosley who has died at the age of 81. Mark easton reporting there. To the Coronavirus Pandemic now, and the latest Government Figures show 2,439 new infections and three deaths in the latest 24 hour period. Cases have been rising slowly over the past few weeks and the number of people who have now died is 127,724. In the Vaccine Roll out, 126,357 people have received a first Vaccine Dose in the last 2a hours. In total, just over 38 Million people have now had their firstjab. Thats just over 72 of the adult population. 252,139 people had their second dose in the past 2a hours. That takes the overall number in that group to almost 23 Million people, orjust over 43 of the adult population. Lets speak to our Health Editor Hugh pym. Theres been much speculation about the effect of the indian variant. When will we know for sure whether it will affect the ending of Covid Restrictions Onjune 21st . It was only just it was onlyjust over a week ago that the Prime Minister said that the Road Map in england could be seriously thrown off course because of this variant. But by the weekend just gone the Mood Music from ministers was that they are increasingly confident it will go ahead, and that was partly, at least, based on a new study by public Health England showing the vaccines as being pretty effective against this variant. But we still dont know how fast it spreads relative to the existing kent variant. 0fficials relative to the existing kent variant. Officials say it is more transmissible but they havent said how much buyer. We may get more information on that this week. And information on that this week. And in terms of the impact on hospitals, Hospital Patient numbers, we havent had a strong analysis yet on that. That might take another week or so. So there is caution from officials before wanting to reach a firm view on whether thatjune 21 date should go ahead. In the meantime, they are saying it is very much everybody should stick to the rules on social distancing and that they should self isolate if required to. To that end in england there are Pilot Schemes offering more mental Health Support and social Care Support to those self isolating. Support and social Care Support to those selfisolating. Support and social Care Support to those selfisolating. Whew, thank ou. Those selfisolating. Whew, thank Yom Hugh a vigil has taken place for a prominent black Lives Matter Activist whos in a critical condition after being shot in the head in south london. Police said there is no evidence that 27 year old Sasha Johnson was the intended target of the shooting. Our community Affairs Correspondent Adina Campbell reports. As they gathered together, praying and reflecting on the shocking events of the weekend, their message was clear. Today, Friends And Family held a vigil for mother of two Sasha Johnson, the latest victim of a Gun Attack in south london, in a critical condition in hospital. The 27 year old black Lives Matter Campaigner had been at a party in peckham when she was shot in the head in the early hours of sunday morning. The Political Party shes a member of, the taking the initiative party, said shed received a number of Death Threats in the past. But police say there is no evidence that she was the target of the shooting. Thank you all for coming today. I appreciate it. Sasha johnson is a tireless antiracism activist. She organised the black Lives Matter Protest in oxford last summer and has spoken about living in a more equal society, where her sons would be accepted. Friends say she is never afraid to call out injustice. Ive seen her, because i worked alongside her as a Youth Worker in wulvercote and the way that she just interacts, when you see her in her youth work, young people cleave to her, she is like a magnet. So, yeah, yeah. Tonight, she remains in hospital after undergoing successful surgery, with her parents by her side. Adina campbell, Bbc News. A Bbc Investigation has heard claims that vulnerable children are being failed at a school that charges more than £50,000 a year Per Pupil with local councils usually paying the fees. Leaways school in East London caters for children with Special Needs but parents and staff claim a lack of specialist teachers and therapists means some children dont get the support they need and leave without even being able to read. The school denies the allegations. 0ur social Affairs Correspondent, michael buchanan, reports. If my son stays there any longer, it will be detrimental to his health, his mental state. The school were making a profit from not meeting the needs of children. The building is often cold, with no playground, but leaways biggest failing, say parents and teachers, is its treatment of pupils. Ten year Old Javon has been at a leaways for two years. His mother fought for him to attend a specialist school, as he has autism, but he hates it. Just before wed get into school, he would stop talking to me and then mute until i picked him up. And he wouldnt have said a word for that whole school day. Despite raising concerns, statutory reviews of her sons needs and progress were delayed and donna is haunted by whatjavon is going through. Hes said. Why am i at leaways . What have i done to deserve this . Ive done nothing wrong. And i dont have autism. Because, in his eyes, having autism is a negative thing because of what hes dealing with at leaways. And how do i explain to him i got it wrong . The school charges £53,000 Per Pupil each year, more than double what a child with Special Needs in Mainstream Schooling would receive. Its owners had a £5 million Operating Profit last year. Its owners made a £5 million Operating Profit last year. They include two men who used to run the firm behind winterbourne view, where, a decade ago, the bbc exposed the abuse of people with learning disabilities. It became clear quite quickly that the school were making a profit from not meeting the needs of children. Both Lucy And Leigh used to work as teachers at leaways. Some of the children were leaving without being able to read, which is unforgivable. A lack of therapists, a lack of any staff, sometimes left a single adult in a room with volatile children. That shouldnt happen. Youre putting the adults at risk, youre putting the children at risk. And there were incidents where Staff Members were seriously injured and required hospital treatment. Would you be happy with a child you know going to leaways . No. Leaways told us they were rated good by 0fsted and always well staffed. They added. Javon will not return to leaways in september. Other parents have told us of similar concerns. Michael buchanan, Bbc News, East London. The time is 6 18 pm. Our top story this evening. Theres international condemnation after belarus diverts a Ryanair Passenger Plane and detains a Journalist On Board. Ryanair calls it state sponsored hijacking. Coming up, were reporting from hull on government efforts to level up what does it mean and how will it work . Coming up on Sportsday On the bbc News Channel. Five time 0lympic Medallist Max Whitlock will lead great britains mens Gymnastics Team at tokyo 2020 after being selected today for his third games. The government has made what it calls Levelling Up a key plank of its strategy for the uk. Spreading the wealth and jobs of the richer parts of the uk to the poorer. But exactly how does the Government Plan to go about it . And how will its Success Orfailure be measured . According to a report out today by the confederation of british industry, Business And Government should put the bitter divisions of brexit behind them and focus on building a fairer, greener economy. Our Business Editor Simonjack has been to hull, where full time workers earn an average salary of nearly £25,500. Thats around a quarter below the average for the South East of england. But when it comes to the Unemployment Rate in hull, its double that of the South East. So how exactly do you give an economic boost to the uks regions . Can the industries of the future generate the jobs needed in the places needed to make the promise of Levelling Up a reality . The blades on these turbines are made here in hull. Staff numbers in this factory have risen from zero to 750 in just five years. I think its brought a great sense of pride. Its already a proud city, of course, but it reenergised that city and brought it to life. Because what weve seen over the course of the five years weve been here on the site is that Innovativeness And Entrepreneurship come to grow, not only directly within the sector, but also those sectors that support our industry. The Industrys Growth has attracted hundreds of young engineers, like Sheffield University Graduate hannah. When i applied, there were 700 applicants are ten roles applicants for ten roles and in the most recent year, i think there were 1300 applicants. University students, i know with Covid And Job opportunities have had a real impact, also people are really warming to the idea of Renewable Energy and knowing it is such a sustainable career to go into and its a lifelong career. So, heres the recipe. You take a bit of high Tech Engineering and a young, established but growing industry, harness the local university, sprinkle in a bit of Government Incentive and procurement and, hey presto, you have economic growth and you have Levelling Up. Sounds simple. Of course, its not simple. This Youth Project works with young people in Hull City Centre and Chief Executive jj says there is a danger they will miss out on opportunities on their own doorstep. The reality is that most of our young people do not have those skills. There is no lack of ability, there is no lack of intellect. There is no lack of will. Those jobs are here now, our young people are here now. They need those skills now, so its a very simple, straightforward Levelling Up that could be done. Outside, the idea of Levelling Up prompts a slightly weary response. They wanted to level us up for many years and have they done that . I dont think so. What does Levelling Up mean to you . It means that we are all fair, you know, we get a fair crack of the whip as well, that we are not left behind. Transport and infrastructure are often seen as the obvious ways to boost regional growth. Thats not enough any more, according business groups. Transport is great, we needed. Transport is great, we need it. Better broadband i is great, we need it. But we need to turn all of that Into Realjobs and Real Growthl in skills and wages if Levelling Up is going to mean anything to the people of this country. The political wind has shifted, thanks to promises the economic map will be redrawn. Levelling up is hard to define, therefore it may be hard to deliver. Simonjack, Bbc News, hull. The Bbc Board has announced a review of the Corporations Editorial and whistle blowing policies, following the Dyson Report into its 1995 interview with diana, princess of wales. The chairman, richard sharp, says the board will look at the culture of the bbc to assess the effectiveness of policies and practice. He also confirmed there will be an investigation into why the journalist involved Martin Bashir was rehired in 2016. Lancashire police say a Gas Explosion that killed a toddler was caused by a Gas Pipe that had been cut inside a neighbouring property. Two year old George Heinz died in the blaze and his parents and two others were injured. The police say they are now treating it as a criminal investigation. A helpline which was launched following reports of Child Abuse and Sexual Harassment in educational settings has been contacted over 350 times since going live on april 1st. The helpline was launched after thousands of testimonies about sexual abuse, often by fellow pupils, in schools were posted on the everyones invited website earlier this year. 65 of the calls have been referred to agencies such as the police or childrens services. Our special correspondent, Lucy Manning has the story in the playground and in the classrooms, schools have been learning. Taught that some have let their pupils down, allowed a culture of sexual Abuse And Harassment to go unchecked, unpunished. Students no longer silent, this just one story of many. Rosie, not her real name, claims she was raped by another pupil at a party outside school aged 1a. This isnt her real voice. I definitely feel like i was being blamed. I feel very much like it was, you are making an issue out of nothing. She and her mum, who we are calling rachel, claim the school isolated rosie instead of the boy. She was very traumatised and it just really resulted in her being hidden away. This became too much because, unfortunately, the perpetrator was still wandering about the school. Rosie ended up temporarily leaving. A lot of the impact its had on me is how much education ive actually missed. And what is your message to schools, having had your experience . There literally is no point having a Metoo Campaign if what we are going to do with young girls is teach them all the exact opposite. If you speak, then you will be victimised, bullied, shut away in your school. The police were involved but decided to take no further action. A decision the family want them to reconsider. Launched two months ago, the Nspcc Helpline has received about 350 calls about abuse in schools and referred 65 cases to the police or childrens services. This has been a watershed moment and its been really important to give people a voice to talk about peer on peer reviews, whats happening in schools and when people are left feeling vulnerable and threatened. It started with the campaign everyones invited. 16,000 testimonies now shared publicly. We are seeing much more testimonies from state schools, from all across the country, as well as universities and also a much diverse range of ages. When the allegations erupted, few schools escaped scrutiny. Some like highgate set up independent reviews. 0ne Head Teacher said it was their darkest days in teaching. The school regulator, 0fsted, is also investigating. What was accepted no longer is. Lucy manning, Bbc News. The uks third largest steel maker, liberty steel, has announced plans to sell off its plant in stocksbridge as part of restructuring plans following the collapse of its main financial backer, greensill capital. Today, the 20 year old telling me how much it meant in his breakthrough season. It felt more special for me because i played more games and scored more important goals, so i feel like ive come on in my game this year and been more myself. But, yeah, still a lot to improve. Foden is now preparing for the game of his life, citys first ever Champions League final against chelsea. Not bad for a player who honed his skills here on the streets of nearby stockport, joining city aged just four. Most of the time it does feel like a dream. You know, id always laugh and joke with my mates about playing in the Champions League final. I never thought that i would be playing in one. It has all gone so quick and i just want to enjoy the occasion as much as i can. I have been through the full academy so i love this club and ive been here forever. So its extra special for me, and i know what the fans feel at times. Four years ago, the City Star propelled england to glory in the under 17 world cup. Commentator foden and many now hope he will prove just as pivotal for the senior side at the euros this summer. How realistic a chance do you think england have, given how many of their matches will be at home at wembley . I think a big chance. There is a lot of players at the moment on the top of their game so i think we can definitely start pushing on to win things now. Nurtured by City Boss Pep guardiola, foden has emerged as a key man for both club and country. So how does he handle the growing expectation . I dont think you can feel the pressure too much because it will affect your game. The scene can change at any time. It only takes a couple of bad games. There are great players on the Bench Waiting to play. So you just have to keep focused and keep performing, and thats all you can do, really. Fodens Attacking Flair has established him as a once in a Generation Talent ahead of a landmark summer. The goal now to deliver for both club and country. Dan roan, Bbc News. Take a look at this, Rain Hammering Down in North West wales once again earlier and, according to the met office, with a week to go, it is wales wettest may on record, with record stretching back 160 years. We need a bit of dry news and it is on its way towards the end of the week. It wont be completely dry but compared to what we have at this month, drier and warmer. Temperatures much more typical of those we get in late may and that will represent a big change on how things have felt. Back to the here and now, out there at the moment, some heavy and thundery downpours across parts of england, particularly central and eastern areas. More persistent rain that will head into Northern England overnight and The Rain Will Come And Go across the northern half of the country, turning drier to the south and the west and a Bit Cooler Side in the morning, temperatures into low single figures for some of you. But across southern parts of england, wales, northern ireland, are largely dry and bright day, fewer showers around all the more persistent rain will push to cornwall and the isles of scilly. Scotland and Northern England are the focus for the heaviest of showers through to the afternoon, the Odd Rumble of thunder but even with that, the northern half of scotland, a warmer and brighter day than today and out of the shower is, in the sunshine, it shouldnt
