Ability, that would not fundamentally change things. If its a high level, then we would have to look carefully at what happens on June 21. Wreath laying services have been held across the uk and Around The World to mark the centenary of the Royal British Legion. And, its Fa Cup final Day Chelsea Play leicester in front of 20,000 fans at wembley. Leicester are looking to win it for the first time, chelsea are hoping to win it for the ninth. Hamas militants have fired dozens of rockets at israeli cities, killing one man, in retaliation for an israeli overnight Air Strike on a gaza Refugee Camp. Palestinian officials say the attack killed at least 14 people, including ten from one extended family. In the last hour, a building in Gaza City Housing International Media has been targeted by israeli warplanes. 0ccupants were given a one Hour Warning to evacuate. In the dark of another long night in gaza, a desperate search for signs of life. A four Storey Building in a densely packed Refugee Camp hit repeatedly, according to eyewitnesses, and razed to the ground. The Rescue Operation was frantic. Yielding only a catalogue of death. Two families, obliterated, at least seven people, including five children aged from five to 14. Mohammed hadidi has lost almost everyone. His wife and the children were staying with her brother when the missiles struck. Little 0mar is all he has left, found in the rubble next to his mother. Israels military has yet to comment on the attack, but images released overnight display an operation that shows no sign of letting up. Israel says its up to hamas to stop firing first. Thats not happening either. This, the aftermath of a Rocket Attack in the city of beersheba. There were no israeli casualties reported overnight, but the rockets are, as always, indiscriminate. Sirens wail this is a solemn day across the Palestinian Territories. In ramallah, on the west bank, sirens sounded to mark the 73 years since the creation of the state of israel and the dispossession of hundreds of thousands of palestinians. 0n the streets of israels mixed cities wherejews and arabs live Side By side, uneasy quiet this morning after nights of shocking violence. This is jaffa, scene of Fresh Disturbances last night, now almost deserted. Fear and hatred tugging away at the fabric of israeli society. Here in london on eight march is under way, here in london on eight march is underway, protesters here in london on eight march is under way, protesters heading towards the Israeli Embassy in london. 0ur Correspondent, james waterhouse, is at hyde park. 0n the corner there, on marble arch, which is usually such a busy trafficjunction, cars are brought to the halt in some lanes as thousands of protesters came out with palestinian flags, donning banners as well. They are, essentially, calling on israel to stop its Air Strikes along the Gaza Strip and other Palestinian Territories in a week which has seen tensions rise to levels we havent seen in years in a conflict that has lasted decades. Theyre now flooding down this lane, through hyde park, to the mile or so in kensington to the Israeli Embassy, where theyre going to demonstrate as close as possible, we understand, and call for israel to end its operations, as well as for the Uk Government to intervene. As you can see, there are people of allages, generations, here who have come out this morning. As we speak, and as these people come down, us negotiators are in the Middle East to call on both sides to de escalate. But the feeling here, and there is a lot of passion here, the feeling is that will not do anything any time soon. We will be life with our corresponded in a geyser in the next few minutes. People eligible for a vaccine in areas where the Coronavirus Indian variant is spreading are being urged to get the jab. The government says testing for the variant is being carried out in parts of scotland, london, the midlands, and also in the North West of england where the army is to be deployed to help with Surge Testing efforts. 0ur health correspondent, katherine da costa, reports. Excuse me, keep walking. Large numbers turned out again in bolton this morning waiting to get theirjab. A rapid deployment of extra doses, tests and Contact Tracers have been drafted in, as Authorities Race to contain the more contagious indian variant. Over the last Week Weve expanded it into marquees because we started the week with just 300 people being vaccinated each day and four vaccinators. Today were going to have 42 vaccinators and we are aiming to do 4,000 pfizer vaccines. There have been calls to immunise younger adults in Hotspot Areas like bolton and blackburn, but Health Experts say age is still the biggest risk factor. The gap between doses for the over 50s and vulnerable groups will be shortened to eight weeks to boost short term immunity, and theres an extra push to reach those who have yet to come forward. There is a bit of a Trade Off here because we know that 12 weeks is better for longer term protection, but we think that there is enough of a crisis with this particular virus in the country at the moment to make sure that we get those individuals that have only had their first dose fully protected as quickly as possible. There is concern over what the impact will be when indoor mixing returns next week. Some estimates suggest the indian variant already accounts for around a third of all cases. Ministers say its too soon to know what the variant will mean for ending lockdown measures next month. We dont know how much more transmissible it is yet. So if its a low increase in transmissibility, that wouldnt fundamentally, necessarily, change things. L if its a high level then we would have to look carefully at what happens on the 21st Ofjune and consider that day. So we just have to be a bit cautious. We dont yet know the answer on that transmissibility. Around 1,000 covid patients are still in hospitals across the uk, the lowest level since mid september. But about a third of adults are still unvaccinated. Its now an anxious wait to see whether new infections translate to an increase in Hospital Admissions in the coming weeks. Katharine da costa, bbc news. Lets talk to richard jarvis, who co chairs the british medical associations public health medicine committee. No think the easing of lockdown in england next week should go ahead given this indian variant . The england next week should go ahead given this indian variant . Given this indian variant . The bma is advisin given this indian variant . The bma is advising caution given this indian variant . The bma is advising caution to given this indian variant . The bma is advising caution to the is advising caution to the government and members of the public. There are a couple of reasons for this, one is the indian variant, the second is related to the large numbers of people in the general population that have yet to be vaccinated. Thinking a little bit about the indian variant, there is good evidence to suggest now that it transmits more easily than the variant that has been dominant in the uk for a few months. The evidence on the severity of illness, we are looking very carefully at that, but that appears to be a similar sort of illness to the other variants. Whether at the indian variants. Whether at the indian variant is combated by vaccines, as well as the dominant strain at the moment, so vaccine effectiveness. You say youre urging a cautious approach, the government will say that it approach, the government will say thatitis, approach, the government will say that it is, but it is pressing ahead with the easing of lockdown in england on monday. Are you saying that easing of lockdown in england should be delayed . I that easing of lockdown in england should be delayed . That easing of lockdown in england should be delayed . I would still use the term cautious. We have a should be delayed . I would still use i the term cautious. We have a message to particularly young people who may not have been vaccinated, that as the gain to hospitality venues, they continue to follow at the hands, face, space messaging, particularly the distancing. And where it is possible to do so, to continue to meet outside. We are asking businesses to really consider how they can improve their ventilation to reduce the risk of transmission indoors. , to reduce the risk of transmission indoors. , ,. ,. , indoors. The reality is we are going to have more indoors. The reality is we are going to have more and indoors. The reality is we are going to have more and more indoors. The reality is we are going to have more and more of indoors. The reality is we are going to have more and more of these i to have more and more of these variants because we know that viruses do mutate. That isnt evidence yet either that this vein it may be more transmissible or that it may be more transmissible or that it increases Hospitalisation And Death . We it increases Hospitalisation And Death . ~ ~. , death . We think that the vaccines are effective death . We think that the vaccines are effective against death . We think that the vaccines are effective against this death . We think that the vaccines are effective against this variant, | are effective against this variant, but they may not be quite as effective. So it is not a binary thing. We are relatively confident about the Hospital Admissions. What we are less certain about is being able to control outbreaks as they happen, as we are seeing in some parts of the country at the moment. Do you think this idea of Surge Vaccinations in bolton is a good way to proceed . To try and get more people there vaccinated as well as Surge Testing . Surge testing . Both Testing And Vaccination Surge Testing . Both Testing And Vaccination are Surge Testing . Both Testing And Vaccination are really Surge Testing . Both testing and| vaccination are really important. Measures we have in the Tool Box for controlling outbreaks, alongside the hands, face and a Space Message is that we have been doing all that the Way Flavour but if you pour vaccines into one area, like bolton, does that mean you are depriving other parts of the population who would have got the vaccine . Im not able to comment on Vaccine Record meant, im afraid. I would suggest that using it in areas where it is likely to help control a particular problem thatis to help control a particular problem that is emerging as a good use of the vaccine that is available. Italye the vaccine that is available. Italy government the vaccine that is available. Italy government make the vaccine that is available. Italy government make a the vaccine that is available. Italy government make a mistake in not putting india or not the Red List of countries much sooner . In other words, that it allow this indian variant to come into this country more easily than it should have done . But i think that is an emphasis on an controlling borders to control spread, both in and out of the country. Spread, both in and out of the count. ,. , country. Richard jarvis, good to talk to you. In a message to coincide with the occasion, Prince Charles said the organisation ensured the sacrifices of veterans would never be forgotten. 0ur Correspondent, jon donnison, has this report. Bugle plays Last Post in whitehall this morning, a Lone Bugler and the Last Post to remember those who have been lost, but also to mark 100 years of the Royal British Legion. Representatives of the army, the Royal Navy and the royal Air Force were among those who laid Wreath Clinic at the cenotaph, after earlier Prince Charles had offered his thanks. I wanted, above all, to offer my sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all those who have helped build this wonderful organisation we know today, and to all those who will be part of its future. The british legion was set up in 1921, in the aftermath of the first world war. Its mission was to support military veterans and their families. So, 100 years after it was founded on this very spot, the Royal British Legion has marked its centenary, and for its more than 200,000 members the organisation is as relevant today as it was a century ago. Whilst its a different era now, the nature of the wounds have changed, but the specialist skills that we can offer are just as relevant. A special Commemorative 50p will be used for the Coin Toss before Kick Off at this afternoons Fa Cup final between Chelsea And Leicester city. And todays events celebrate an organisation that has been supporting those prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice now for 100 years. Jon donnison, bbc news, in whitehall. A british instititution closes its doors for the final time today. Debenhams which has been a presence On Uk high streets for 240 years fell into administration in 2019, and struggled to find a buyer in the midst of the pandemic. However, the brand will continue to trade online after it was bought by fashion retailer boohoo. China has become the latest country to land a spaceceft on the surface of mars. Chinas President Xijinping has called the mission an outstanding achievement. The band, the specials, sang that their Home City was becoming like a Ghost Town back in 1981, but its come a long way since then. Today, coventry kicks off its reign as the Uk City of culture. The year long celebration of the city s arts, Heritage And History was due to have begun injanuary, but everything was put on hold because of the pandemic. David sillito reports. It was meant to have been a non stop year of art and culture, a city wide party. But then came the pandemic. However, four and a half months on, things are finally happening in coventry. 0h, itjust feels so exciting to have got to this point. Theres so much excitement about Opening Doors again. Coventry has got so much history that people dont realise. Its an amazing place. Music, dance, art, theatre. A celebration of coventry s history, culture, and even some of the glories of coventry architecture. The Britannia Hotel will be featuring in the Coventry City of culture colouring book. Brutalist coventry masterpieces to be coloured in. There we are, the Britannia Hotel. Ive already got started on this, but i think i need another grey. I need a greyer grey. And i also met the team who have been bringing a bit of colour to the streets and shops. And this was a special moment for cara and charlie. Today is very different, today is the first day ive met cara in person. So you two have been working together for more than a year . Yeah, its quite emotional. Everything that we have done, all of this development, has been over a screen. Theres nothing like developing a programme with shops and businesses and needing to use their windows when theyre not open. Its a good Reminder Ofjust what a challenge this has been for coventry. Its notjust that everything has been delayed. Its the fact that all their plans were turned absolutely upside down. No one knew if venues were going to be open or when they might be open or how many people would be allowed to go inside or what theyd be allowed to do when they did get inside. So the answer has been to think, well, Outside The Box or perhaps more simply, just outside. Theoretically the whole city is our canvas. I think were looking at some of the walls here, some on this building here, behind the transport museum. So, outdoor art, and this, rehearsals for coventry moves, an outdoor spectacular. But even though it is outside, theyre still not allowed to have a crowd so the audience will have to watch from home. People will be able to watch it on tv, on radio. But not in person . No. If we have people turning up and appearing at events before June 21 in large numbers, we Cant Guarantee that those events will continue. Its unbelievable. All this work, and youve got to keep your big events almost a secret. Yeah. So, for coventry, 2021 begins today. The hope is were on track for a return of live entertainment and live audiences. But for the time being, this is culture with a good deal of caution. David sillito, bbc news, coventry. Over 20,000 fans will be at wembley later for one of sports most famous occasions the Fa Cup final. Chelsea have won it eight times, but despite making four finals, leicester have never lifted the trophy and its been half a century since they last had the chance. As Patrick Gearey reports. Commentator and its curtains for leicester, i as the irishman smashes it home. Wembley is no place for regrets, but four times in 20 Post War Years Cup final day ended in tears for Leicester City. The last of their stumbles came three months before neil armstrongs Famous Small Step in 1969. While man has been back to the moon, Leicester Havent returned to the cup final until now. 6,000 of their fans will be there to see it, and some have waited 52 years for that giant leap. Come on i never thought it would be this long before i was back again. Weve never won it. Weve been here four times, as everybody knows, and weve lost four times. Its the holy grail, and its become this. Almost like a millstone round our neck that would quite like to get rid of. So much has happened since. Just five years ago, leicester pulled off the greatest shock in English Football history by winning the premier league. Two years after that thrilling victory came an appalling tragedy. Leicesters owner, vichai srivaddhanaprabha, was killed in a Helicopter Crash outside their king power stadium. His memory remains a motivation. Id love to win it for Khun Vichai and his family. One of the reasons i came to here was because of them, and to be able to lead Leicester City out in the first time in over 50 odd years in a final, itll be a real privilege for me. Lineker in seven years playing for his beloved leicester, Gary Lineker never reached the final. Now, of course, hes a regular there. Good afternoon from wembley. He was also at wembley back in 69 and cried All The Way Home something he probably couldnt get away with on tv. If i could speak to my eight year old self again now about going back to wembley, with leicester, it would be, dont be so confident, because it can go wrong. Hopefully it wont this time, for the 60 year old thats going back to wembley, to watch his team again. Its been a long wait. Lets hope it was a worthwhile wait. Both Chelsea And Leicester have work to do in the league. Theyre not yet assured of a place in the top four. But cup final day demands tunnel vision. No distractions, no regrets.
