Israel has to decide whether it wants to follow Artillery And Air attacks with a Ground Assault against hamas inside gaza. That has been part of the pattern during 15 years of intermittent warfare between them. Israel has called up 7,000 reservists. In jerusalem, Tens Of Thousands of palestinians came to pray at islams holiest place after mecca and medina. In this city, religion is intertwined with politics, nationalism and power. Every day, india is recording nearly as many Covid I9 cases as every other country in The World put together. In the past 2a hours, more than 4,000 people have died from the virus. Hospitals in many parts of the country are being overrun. One of the states seeing the most dramatic surges is west bengal, governed by a regional political party. From the state s capital kolkata, Yogita Limaye reports. 1,000 miles from delhi kolkata. Look at this. A frighteningly busy market in a region where covid has surged nearly 80 times in the past two months. People here are scared but they have to work, to eat. And this is the cost. What is happening here could affect the Worlds Ability to recoverfrom the pandemic. I spoke to dr soumya swaminathan, the World Health organizations chief scientist. Why should the World Care about what is happening in india right now . This virus does not respect borders. It doesnt respect nationalities. It spreads before you know that it is spreading. If the virus keeps on replicating and multiplying, the number of variants is going to keep increasing and these variants will ultimately spread across The World. We will not be able to stop that from happening. The only way out is to immunise this vast population, but Vaccine Supply is critically low. This country will need billions of doses. The value of bitcoin The Worlds biggest Digital Currency has tumbled after Elon Musk, the chief executive of tesla, said the electric Car Company would no longer accept the cryptocurrency as payment. And its all because of fossil Fuels 0ur chief Environment Correspondent Justin rowlatt explains. Concerns about the environmental impact of crypto currencies. You will have heard of bitcoin for the biggest crypto of them all, it has seen its value sore in recent years. Look at this, you could have picked one up for 1 ten years ago, recently bitcoin Hit A Peak of 68,000. And that is in part because of support from Elon Musk, the boss of tesla. The electric Car Company said it would accept bitcoins for Car Purchases in march this year, but today Elon Musk performed a screeching u turn. Tesla has suspended Vehicle Purchases using bitcoin, he tweeted. We are concerned about the rapidly increasing use of Fossil Fuels for Bitcoin Mining and transactions, especially coal, which has the worst emissions of any fuel. And its true. Bitcoin relies on the use of staggering amounts of energy, much of it from fossilfuels, and that is because of the Way Bitcoin is produced or mined. Its like a kind of Lottery Run every ten minutes. Computers Around The World compete to create a record of every transaction ever made in bitcoin. They also have to get a random number, get there first and you win the prize, six and a quarter bitcoins, today worth £250,000. The idea is, the more computers verify transactions, the more secure the currency is, and with such big cash on offer huge numbers of people are getting in on the game. The effort they are making is truly enormous. Bitcoin miners make some 160 quintillion calculations every second. That is 160 followed by 18 zeros and that takes a huge amount of electricity. The uk uses just over 300 terawatts hours of electricity a year and at the current Rate Bitcoin is using 150 terawatts hours a year, so that is half of what the uk uses and about half a percent of total world electricity use. We have a system with millions of devices all Around The World that are constantly generating a whole load of useless competitions and using a load of energy in doing that while bitcoin is in essence still very small at the moment. And researchers say at least a two thirds of that will have been generated from Fossil Fuels. Which is why bitcoin is such a huge source of Greenhouse Gas emissions. Something you may want to consider if you are thinking of buying the so called currency, and also something that would make scaling it up to be a World Currency on par with the Dollar Or Euro a real challenge. Lets bring you an update on our top story and that uncertainty over events in gaza amichai stein, diplomatic editor of israels public Broadcasting Corporation says an Idf Spokesperson has told them there has not been a Ground Incursion into gaza. Let me show you those pictures from gaza, this is the skyline over Gaza City in the early hours of friday morning. Not any sign of activity, it would be difficult to tell at this stage but the Reuters News Agency says that has spoken to people living in the Gaza Strip saying there is no sign of any military presence on the ground, no sign of incursion and now saying the news from israel public broadcasters saying that they have not sent troops into gaza but theres Artillery Fire and also Aerial Bombardment Taking place of Gaza City. Football and liverpool have given their chances of qualifying for next seasons Champions League a major boost after they beat Manchester United four two at old trafford. The game was supposed to have been played earlier this month but was delayed due to fan protests. There were similar scenes before thursdays match as united supporters continued to voice opposition to Club Owners the glazer family. But the game did go ahead and it was liverpool fans who were celebrating at the final whistle. One man who wont be happy with that result is former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. He enjoyed extraordinary success with the club and is now the subject of a new film charting his life and his recovery from a Brain Haemorrhage in 2018. Hes been talking to our Sports Editor Dan Roan about his career and the men who played for him. The players are inherited at aberdeen and Manchester United were strong and powerful, and it is changed, but it has become a more protective life nowadays, you know . And i know that with Social Media and things like that are supposed to solve all problems, but then the men, i was very lucky to inherit the of clear sighted in my earlier days. Do you think that you would find it harder as starting your managerial Career Today . Because the role of the managers seems to have shifted somewhat. I personally i dont think so. Ill tell you why i dont think so. I think its my personality. I think that its something in me that was bound to get me somewhere in life, you know . And im not being boastful here, but i think that i had that personality to do well and the drive to do well, and the hunger and the energy. I think there are people out there with the drive that you see with klopp, for instance. And the drive he has brought. And pep guardiola, Thejob He has done at city. There is a place for the people with the right credentials and the right material, and there are obstacles, but the good ones will find a way. You gave a quote recently around the super league. The Champions League final is the climax of the movie, and it builds to this crescendo, the whole film builds to that incredible moment. Which i suspect, even 22 years on used sometimes struggle to believe what happened that night. But the future of that tournament was obviously under threat up until recently. What did you make of that and what has happened since . Well, as a player i played in european football. The rangers. And as a manager i took a provincial club like aberdeen to beat Real Madrid in a final. Every club should have that dream to achieve what aberdeen did. So thats the answer. You cannot ever forget the real reason. That as a small as a guy can climb to the top of everest. And thats the best way i can put that. We cant do it without that, really. Sir Alex Ferguson speaking to our Sports Editor Dan Roan. In the us there is a national conversation about the role of policing. This month will mark the one Year Anniversary of the death of george floyd. President Joe Biden has called on congress to pass major Police Reform in his memory. President Joe Biden has called on congress to pass major Police Reform in his memory. 0ne Police Department that has benefitted from federal oversight in newark, newjersey. But will the changes last . Larry madowo has the story. Stop Police Brutality in the black community stop Police Brutality this is no temporary protest against Police Brutality in newark. They call itjustice monday, and it has been here every week for five years. Black people are being killed like animals in the street here in the united states of america. Newark s in conflict with its police dates back to the riots of 1967, and even before that. By 2010, policing in the predominantly black city was so broken that an investigation revealed many problematic patterns and practices. I feel like theyve got a personal vendetta against black people. The Department Ofjustice entered into what is known as a Consent Decree with newark. That is, federal oversight of the police with an independent monitor to track progress. In 2020, newark police did not fire a single shot. People here seem to trust the police a little more now. Everybody knows each other. Like come up police live in newark, so you knowj what the police live at,. So obviously they are not going to treat you bad. Mayor Ras Baraka was elected on the Police Reform platform, and has supported the implementation of the Consent Decree over the last five years. 0ur Crime is like the lowest it has been in 50 years. And the interesting thing about it is while crime is decreasing, so are arrests. Which proves to me there is no causal relationship between arresting people and reduction of crime. How expensive is implementing this Consent Decree and can newark afford it . Oh, its too expensive. Its incredibly expensive. I mean, we pay a little, maybe over 2 Million a year. Its about cost, but its also about culture. Part of the reason why its so hard to reform policing in america is because of the so called blue wall of silence. An unofficial code where Law Enforcement officers protect each other. It was no different here in newark. Its like anything else. No one likes to be looked at or watched or investigated. Anthony ambrose worked with Mayor Baraka in overhauling policing in newark as his public safety director. He has just retired after 35 years as a policeman. I think the training, or de escalation, and our use of force, our scrutiny that officers know that we look at body worn cameras every day, our Consent Decree unit, i think it all helped, it all came together and it helped us. Police departments across america are watching federal investigations in minneapolis and louisville to see if they lead to Consent Decrees like newark s that might require them to learn a new way to protect and serve. Larry madowo, bbc news, newark. As many countries start to ease coronavirus restrictions, attention is turning to how we can safely hold large scale events again. Well this is one way to put on a socially distanced gig. French Electro Artist Teho performed at an altitude of 3000 metres in the swiss alps. The dj says he had to overcome his fear of heights, and brave sub zero temperatures at dawn, to do his set from a small platform overlooking the matterhorn after a year of not being able to perform in clubs due to the pandemic. But was there anybody there . Apart from our cameraman. Who knows. Thats bbc world news. Wherever you are watching or listening to us from, thanks for your company. Hello. Theres been no shortage of wet weather this week. And there is plenty more where that came from as we head into the weekend. Thursday was a particularly soggy affair across some southern areas. You can see this curl of cloud on the satellite picture, a slow moving Weather System that brought heavy and persistent rain. There is more cloud behind in the atlantic. Another area of low pressure heading away for the weekend. In between well, arguably a slice of slightly drier weather. There will still be some showers as we go through the day the showers will tend to pop up in the areas where we develop some sunshine. Across Northern Ireland, eventually western parts of scotland, northwest england, wales, the southwest, it will turn into a sunshine and Showers Day after a dull start for some. But for Eastern England and certainly the northeast of scotland we hold onto more cloud. Where we have more of the cloud there wont be so many showers but it will be chilly, 11 or 12 degrees. Could be the Odd Spot of drizzle around at times. As we head through Friday Night into saturday, some bits and pieces of Showery Rain will be replaced with more persistent rain pushing up from the southwest across england and wales into Northern Ireland by The End of the night. Quite a mild start to the weekend but it is going to be quite a turbulent weekend of weather actually with some very, very heavy downpours and thunderstorms. Always with some sunny spells in between. 0ur Band of rain will continue to push its way slowly northwards during saturday. Perhaps getting into the South Of Scotland at The End of the day. Behind It Sunshine and showers but those showers really will start to turn very, very heavy for wales and the southwest. Hail and thunder later on. The top temperature is between 11 and 15 degrees. And then we head on into sunday in this area of low pressure is going to move right across the uk. As the sits on top of us during sunday it will allow for some very unstable conditions in the atmosphere. That means big Shower Clouds are going to develop with some hail and some thunder, frequent lightning potentially in the showers. Torrential downpours of rain and some pretty squalid, gusty winds. Particularly windy for coastal Southern England and the channel islands. Gusts here in excess of a0 mph. But sunshine between the showers not feeling too bad. Highs of 16 degrees. You may have been caught in the downpours today. This is bbc news, the headlines. As hostilities enter theirfifth day, over 100 people have been killed in gaza and seven in israel.
