The violence between israelis and palestinians is worsening. Hamas has launched another barrage of rockets deep into israel while israeli air strikes are raining down in gaza. Let me show you live pictures from gaza city. More buildings have been struck. At least 83 palestinians have reportedly died while 7 killed in israel. Paul adams is injerusalem. The conflict has taken night has fallen but asking the fighting has not stopped . I have not had any reports of Rocket Attacks into israel for a little while. I dont think there have been any casualties from Rocket Attacks into israel today. Although there were salvos earlier in the day. Happy most of those were intercepted by israels defence system. Air strikes have continued at various times during the day in gaza. With the israelis talking about having a wide array of hamas targets that they want to get. I think there is a concerted feeling in the Israeli Military that they want to inflict as much damage as they can on hamas before this conflict is over. And you mentioned in your introduction and the possibility of a ground operation. We have seen some signs of troops and icing on the border. That could mark the prelude to Something Like a ground operation. If it does happen, then it could be a rerun of what we saw in 2014 when it was notjust a rerun of what we saw in 2014 when it was not just score of a rerun of what we saw in 2014 when it was notjust score of people who are killed by thousands of people who were killed. This is before the group attacked and as you can see that driver is reversing from crowds. And now, there is a lot of police all around on the street corners, residents are very nervous. I spoke to onejewish mother. She told me she had always known there were tensions here. She felt they were under the surface and under control. We spoke to some of the arab residents and palestinian citizens of israel. They say they have known there was this anger under the surface ready to erupt at any time. They have long felt like there was discrimination against them and they were second class citizens in israel. At the same time as all of this is playing out locally we had reminders of the conflict still going on within israel and militants in gaza with the rocket fire from the gaza strip and thatjust made loud explosions over our heads. Israel has moved troops towards the gaza border as it prepare for all eventualities and an escalation. 0ur correspondent Rushdi Abu Aloaf is in gaza with this update. Today in the morning there was a little bit of a brief calm. We saw some people out and about in the streets. I saw some people going to stock up for the night but very quickly the sound of rockets and the sound of air will push people again to go back to their homes. They were shocked by the destruction and the scale of the fire both from israel and from the Militancy Group here and from the Militancy Group here and they remind the people of the Air Force Team and this is really very worrying. The conflict has been going on for four days straight. Weve been hearing from residents living in both gaza and in israel. This is amit aaron son. Hes injaffa and has been showing the bbc how he is keeping safe. This is the entrance to our apartment safe unit. There is one door which is steel and its blast proof. You can it slides open and there is another actual door. The room as you can see he has an Air Filtration System in case we need to see in it and then there is normal looking window. You can see that blue beautiful skyline of tel aviv but you can close they shutter and theres another shutter made from steel which is splash proof and you have to close it and close the window. We have a triple layer of protection inside the apartment protection inside the apartment protection and the apartment safe room. And this is ihab sulaiman in northern gaza. This area right now what i am talking to you i can hear heavy bombings nearby and around. Its terrifying attacks. Their light sounds of death february. We cannot have a blink of an eye. We pressed many speaking i am up at 7am in the morning and this is what i could do. For my children things are horrible. Children and kids can never bear this heavy bombing everywhere. We just had to calm them down, this is all we could do. They seek is supposed to be valued and we could say the best location for them instead of having a beautiful time and keeping them as memories. Whats happening right now in gaza is more bombing and missiles everywhere. This creates a sense of horror inside every child in gaza. Gaza is a strip of land bordering egypt, israel and the meditarranean. Its only 360 kilometres square and much poorer and smaller than the west bank. The territory is one of the most densely Populated Areas of the world. 1. 9 Million People live here. 1. 4 million are registered as refugees. Hamas reinforced its power in gaza in 2007 after ousting its palestinian rival, fatah. Since then israeli sanctions on the strip have tightened. There are restrictions on peoples movement, goods and fishing. Theres no dispute that israel is the far greater power here. Heres Foreign Affairs analyst, jonathan marcus, on that. This is a tool to the asymmetric and imbalanced struggle. Israel is a Regional Military power. It has technology in many senses equivalent of that of the United States and other highly developed countries. We see them using their airpower, largely fixed wing aircraft and helicopters as well, i dont know. It obviously has a very sophisticated intelligence gathering capabilities. Its a bit of a remarkable archive of intelligence on the gaza strip. And the fact that a number of senior hamas commanders have been killed. It believes its destroying Weapons Stories and Weapons Factories and so on. In terms of a balance of power, there simply is no balance. Israel is overwhelmingly the more powerful after here and while palestinian rockets can clearly cause deaths, damage, and casualties inside israel, the longer the struggle goes on, its going to get much worse. The imbalance of casualties, we see that in balance of casualties already. On that point the disproportionate number of palestinian deaths was put to israels defence spokesman. This was his response. Hamas purposely embeds its Military Infrastructure within the civilian population creating an almost impossible situation where they are using Palestinian Civilians as their Human Shields while the fire rockets at i civilians. Let me reiterate, we are careful and mindful of civilian casualties in gaza and we are going out of our way to minimise them. We understand the situation and we dont want to hurt other people. But, when it all comes down, we have to defend ourselves. We have to defend our civilians and we simply cannot tolerate those kinds of attacks. As casualties and deaths mount International Efforts to stem the violence are being stepped up. The us president is sending a Special Envoy whos due in the region soon. Heres Barbara Plett usher in washington on his role. The un play as there are pretty uplifting and affairs, he is very experienced. He has up until now been working on the palestinian side to try to ties were broken under their trump administration. So, to try to ties were broken under theirtrump administration. So, he knows that brief and he knows the file very well and hes a mid level diplomat and what analysts here have pointed out is that he does not really have a diplomatic heft to change the directory of those on the ground are interested in doing so. Unless perhaps he is carrying a personal message from the president which may be the case although we have not been told that is the case. Here, the message has been very much of strong support for israels right to self defense. The secretary has inserted language about crediting human rights and hes inserted calls for caution on the israeli side about civilian casualties but both here and at the white house its been a very strong statement that it israelis have the right to self defense. It is really keeping in the way administrations have responded to conflicts between israel and gaza and past administrations, at least in the initial phases and thats where they are standing right now. The electric Car Company Tesla has stopped accepting bitcoin as payment. Back in march, its ceo elon musk said that people could buy a car using the cryptocurrency but he was criticsed for not considering bitcoins Environmental Impact. Now elon musk says he goes on cryptocurrency heres our new York Business correspondent michelle fleury. I have but to say, from wall street to silicon valley, there are a lot of people scratching their heads trying to figure this out. Im seeing lots of speculation about what might be behind it but really its a lot of people throwing stuff to the walls and seeing if anything will stick. The truth as you rightly point out is the way that the claims are mind as it were involves a lot of energy. Computers do in comp problem is that there are a lot of energy. There is a study suggesting that bitcoins uses as much energy as the entire country of argentina. Questions have been raised but this was true back in february, we knew a lot of this information when he said he was in favour of crypto currency and decline bitcoin so its not sure whats changed. The accounting side of this. You dont get the games but you have to book the loss is when you account for crypto currency. Did that have an impact . A lot of speculation and a lot of head scratching. No one quite clear whats going on. The process of creating bitcoin known as mining needs enormous computing power. That means lots of these giant data centres which use a lot of electricity and that s led to criticism of Bitcoin S Impact on the environment. An extremely inefficient way of conducting transactions and the amount of energy that consumes in processing those transactions and staggering. Its unclear exactly how much Energy Bitcoin uses. Cryptocurrencies are decentralised and so by design are hard to track. But the consensus is that Bitcoin Mining is very energy intensive. Look at this graph of annual power consumption. Estimates vary but this one by the bbc puts bitcoin on par with The Netherlands. But it didn t used to be on this scale. In the beginning you just had people maintaining that bitcoin on their laptops and computers. There are was relatively easy to get one. Now though with the popularity and profitability of bitcoin at an all time high, the scale has shifted to another level. Data centres all over the world are mining for bitcoin. 75 of the processing on bitcoin is done in china and two thirds of chinas electricity comes from coal. That means the electricity that bitcoin uses mostly comes from one of the most polluting energy sources. Which leads to whether this is just how cryptocurrencies will be. Some argue newer cryptocurrencies are better. Most of the major new crypto currency are proof of state, polka dot included, as such they use extremely little energy. Way more efficient than any alternative, whether it is crypto currency or centralised currency. Inevitably though as bitcoin expands and becomes more valuable, the computing effort needed to create and maintain it and the energy used to do that will increase. And that looks like a problem. This analyst argues if bitcoin were to be adopted as a global reserve currency, 0k, is bitcoin worse than many other computing tasks. Let s go back to that graph from earlier. Yes bitcoin uses about the same energy as The Netherlands but it s eclipsed by data centres. They account more than energy than thailand and it has a population 4 times higher than the The Netherlands. And data centres are essential to the internet they form the cloud where everything we put online, including this video, is saved. You and the cloud is only getting bigger and bigger. So while the bitcoin may be hit by its Energy Consumption the issue of the Environmental Impact of our digital lives is far greater than one currency. Now to a political scandal here in the uk. They spent the only money they had to try to save him. As it spreads unchecked, the virus is taking on new, more worrying forms. The highly infectious variant that is spreading through india has now reached more than 40 countries around the world, including the uk. This is not an indian problem, whats happening here could affect the worlds ability to recover from the pandemic. I spoke to this doctor, the World Health Organizations chief scientist. This country will need billions of doses. It is hard to see how it can do it alone. There are growing concerns of what the india variant means for the course of the pandemic. The dots on this map show the countries where it has been detected. Heres more from Health Correspondent Catherine Burns with radiance, there are three things we need to ask yourself does it cause more severe disease . That doesnt seem to be the case with this one. The second is, does it have any kind of negative, could fight harder against vaccines . It is early days, we dont know for certain. There are signs to be optimistic there. The third one, and i think this is key, is it more infectious, how does it spread . We already know it spreads at least as quickly as a kent variant, which has become dominant in the uk, and it seems it could spread considerably faster. So, the indian variant may be able to spread quicker than other variants. But lets have a look at the other two points that catherine mentioned that some fully vaccinated people are being infected and the severity of illness people are experiencing when that happens. In india, official figures claim two to four vaccinated people out of 10,000 are been infected. That is to be expected as the vaccines are on average around 80 effective. However, 60 of doctors in one covid 19 Intensive Care Unit in delhi were infected even after being fully vaccinated. So questions remain about the degree to which the vaccines are stopping infection. There is also more evidence around the impact on illness. Professor Ravindra Gupta is investigating new strains of covid. Some of the permutations allowed it vires to personally escape from some of the antibodies we make, but we do have obviously very high levels of antibodies after vaccination. There does not seem to be an increased risk of severe illness in people who have been vaccinated, so although the virus has been shown to affect individuals who are vaccinated, it doesnt lead to severe illness, and so therefore at an individual level, we should all be vaccinated because it will protect us against the severe effects of the virus, even if it is able to avoid some of antibody responses. Concerns about the india variant are growing. This is the frontpage of the i newspaper here in the uk today. It says fears for end of lockdown after variant cases triple. Last week, it was labelled a strain of concern by Public Health england. And its been linked to outbreaks in glasgow and these other places in the uk. In blackburn, in the north of england, all adults over 18 will now be offered the vaccine to try to stop the spread. And the group of scientists and Health Experts who form the uks Sage Committee met today to talk about the risk. Heres Health Secretary matt hancock. We are worried about the rise in the indian variant. We have seen what has happened in india, for the number of cases has risen very, very sharp, and we are putting in enhance Contact Tracing so that people who Test Positive, and if they Test Positive for this variant, get extra support to make sure that we slow the spread. Now, measuring the death toll of the pandemic is difficult. Offically, there have beenjust over 3. 3 Million Deaths of covid so far, but in order to count in those numbers there has to have been a positive test. So, it misses out a lot of deaths that happened in countries that couldnt or wouldnt test. For those, you need to look at access debts. Access to it being just beyond what you would expect apartment in a normal year. New research from The Economist predicts the true death toll could be between 7. 9 to 12 million. Unfortunately all countries submit that data, and those that do dont do in a timely fashion. We collected data on 121 indicators ranging for official covid deaths to demography to geography and use that to detect patterns between execs debts in these indicators, and then we estimate the debts when they were unknown, allowing us to estimate the true death toll of the pandemic. I5 true death toll of the pandemic. Is it your view that these calculations are more accurate than the official statistics that we are being given . Certainly. The official statistics have to be under counts. To give you one example, in africa, the current official death toll is about 1. 1 billion, whereas we know that in south africa alone, access debts number over 150,000. find south africa alone, access debts number over 150,000. What about the idea that some count all the uncounted. What about the idea that some of count all the uncounted. What about the idea that some of the count all the uncounted. What about the idea that some of the deaths i the idea that some of the deaths that have been recorded as covid deaths perhaps not because people may be seriously ill with other things, but if they have a positive test, it goes down as a covid deaths. ,. ,. , ,. ,. , deaths. In order to count as an official covid deaths, you have to be tested positive, but it could very well be that some of those who have died from covid would have died anyway, since the pandemic began until now. Excess deaths get around this issue, because we look at deaths compared to what you would expect, arriving at the true toll of the pandemic. For instance, in some countries, there is a deficit of deaths this year, because steps were taken to shutdown for covid, and Infectious Diseases were reduced, and we see less Road Accidents as people work from home. The Republican Party faces a choice as it seeks to gain power again. Congresswoman liz cheney represents one of the options. I will do everything i can to ensure that the former president never again get anywhere near the oval office. It s a choice donald trump recognised when choosing his targets back in february. Liz cheney, how about that . And this week, liz cheney was sacked as the third ranking republican in congress. House republican leader Kevin Mccarthy told us hed. But what is the message . And why were they concerned about liz cheney . Donald trumer greeted her sacking with a Tweet Calling her a warmonger. Liz cheney is the daughter of dick cheney, who was Vice President when the us invaded iraq in 2002. She also worked for the administration. Maybe iraq, 18 years ago, is the reason. Liz cheney and donald trump have clashed on this before. Maybe it s that she s not conservative enough. Conservatives dont care about whether or not liz cheney is talking clap about donald trump or not, be clear about the fact that she has never been a true conservative, people who say she is a truly laughable. Hervoting people who say she is a truly laughable. Her voting record, she doesnt Stand Up And Fight for anything that matters to true conservatives. Maybe that is the reason. But look at this. Five thirty eight shows us that liz cheney voted in line with trump 93 of the time. Perhaps, instead, some republicans really do care about what s said about trump, because the sacking of liz cheney and the choice facing republicans surely routes back to january 6th. For two months, donald trump told his supporters the election was stolen. Some of them acted and stormed the capitol to make the point. And liz cheney was clear none of this would have happened without the president. And she s continued in that vein. Last week, liz cheney wrote that republicans must decide whether we are going to choose truth. She said the party is an anti democratic trump cult of personality. And as her sacking loomed, she said this. I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president s said to undermine our democracy. Bear all of that criticism in mind as we listen to this republican welcoming her sacking. We are in the minority. We are trying to get the majority, we are trying to get the majority, we are trying to get the majority, we are trying to put forward their ideas to the american people, and they cannot do that if every time we go out there and take the microphone we are distracted by this issue. And so we need to have a unified leadership voice. But what is described there as a distraction is a senior republican asking her party where it stands on false claims, an election was stolen and on the man making them. It s a concern Kevin Mccarthy would recognise. At the time, he said. And so what is called a distraction is perhaps also a test. Will republicans abandon a man whose Conspiracy Theories have reduced some americans faith in their democracy . This week, we got more answers. Congressman matt gaetz retweeted an axios article describes the Cheney Sacking as a victory for him and his pro trump allies. No doubt it is. Donald trump himself released a statement, saying. And congressman Madison Crawthorne tweeted. And let s be clear, republicans politicians are notjust aligning with trump they re aligning with Many Republican voters. This poll found that 50 of Republican Voters thought cheney should be sacked. 18 wanted her to stay. And remember, this recent survey found that 70 of republicans believe that joe biden did not win the election. 70 . That s why liz cheneys critique is notjust a distraction. Its notjust about the rights and wrongs of a political ousting its about whether a Political Party and its supporters embrace or at least tolerate an imagined reality and the man who is creating it. For his part, the man in the middle of this donald trump is at his resort in mar a lago in florida. And hes still keen to talk about the election. Here s tmz sharing a video in which mr trump makes a speech at a wedding. We hear him at bidens iran policy, and the election result. And then he says the couple are beautiful. Theres also theres another video where the man who was president Injanuary Stands on a patio in front of a drum kit and to a small crowd turns to some similar themes. Lets see what they found. I wouldnt be surprised if they find thousands and thousands of votes, so were going to watch very closely. And we will watch pennsylvania and you are going to Watch Georgia and wisconsin, and youre watching New Hampshire as the counter lots of votes up in New Hampshire. Because this was a great diligent. Everybody knows that. This was a rigged election. And with that mr trump wrapped up, the crowd waited for the band, and the former President S Search goes on for the votes which don t exist. And despite the false election claims, the capitol, the constant looking back, trump remains central to the republicans future. Since he left office, Kevin Mccarthy visited former Press Secretary and now politician Sarah Huckerbee sanders. She s been too. So has senator ted cruz. It s all too much for some republicans. Peter wehner served various republicans administrations and has written of his party. And the media commentator jay rosen talks of the party being counterfactual, of needing fiction to pursue its political battles. Certainly, you could be forgiven for being confused by the republicans. Standing with president biden, Kevin Mccarthy said this. I dont think anybody is questioning the legitimacy of the president ial election. This is disorientating, because it s not all over with. Kevin mccarthy knows that Many Americans question the legitimacy of the election. He knows that they do so because of donald trump. And he knows he sjust overseen the sacking of liz cheney, at least in part, because she opposed trump saying questioning the legitimacy of the election. And if that has your head spinning, this from senator Lindsay Graham helps. He told fox news. And if you factor that in, its possible to conclude that, this week, the republicans chose a dual reality strategy for success. One that must try and accommodate both the real world and the world donald trump describes. That choice takes american further into unchartered water. Stay with us on outside source still to come. We are going to talk about nasa, because its bagged lunch this year is in final testing. Part of the river tame in Greater Manchester has been named as the most plastic polluted riverbed in the uk. A study carried out across the river revealed very high concentrations of tiny plastic particles that Scientists Say have come from sewage. Victoria gill has more. Capturing a snapshot of the plastic pollution in our rivers. This spot on the river tame has the most plastic polluted riverbed in the uk. Weve got a couple of microbeads in here. And Scientists Say theyve now zoomed in on the source of all that plastic. There are up to Three Million microplastic particles per day can be coming out of this outfall under given conditions. So its very, very clear that microplastics are coming from combined Sewer Overflows like the one behind me, or from outfalls directly from waste Water Treatment plants. Untreated waste water is waste with both raw sewage and microplastics fragments of packaging, coatings and fibres from our homes, and plastic debris from industry thats washed down the drain. But treating that waste water, the researchers say, would remove most of those particles. The fact that they accumulate in the riverbed shows that untreated sewage is being released frequently. Theres plenty of signs of pollution in this water and along these river banks, but this is just a classic semi urban river, typical of anywhere in the uk. And what the Scientists Say is that wherever untreated sewage is being released into our rivers, its bringing large quantities of microplastic. The Water Company that operates the Treatment Plants on this river, united utilities, declined an interview but told us they didnt fully accept the findings. In a statement, the company said. We recognise we have a role to play and are involved in a wider study to understand the sources of microplastics in the environment. The sediments where Microplastics Settle are the foundation of a rivers ecosystem, and the Scientists Say that plastic is adding just another layer of pollution to an already damaged river environment.
