In the us the Republican Party sacks a prominent Trump Critic from its leadership. Liz cheney lost support after speaking out against Donald Trumps baseless claims the election was stolen. And here in the uk the Prime Minister announces a full Public Inquiry into his Governments Response to the coronavirus pandemic. The violence between israel and the palestinians shows not sign of stopping. Rocket attacks and Air Strikes are going in either direction. Six israelis have been killed, including a soldier, today. Amongs the palestinians the Health Ministry in gaza says 53 people have been killed. That includes ilt children. This is the moment israeli Air Strikes destroyed another high Rise Building in Gaza City. This was a couple of hours ago. The Al Shorouk Tower is a well known landmark, and is listed as hosting media offices. These are israeli strikes on gaza on wednesday morning. The Israeli Defence Forces says these strikes are targeting members of hamas the militant group that controls gaza. These are pictures released by the Israeli Army of what they say are those targeted strikes. Israel says the Air Strikes killed 16 members of hamas on wednesday. Funerals are starting to take place for those killed in the enclave. My Colleague Rushdi Abalouf is in Gaza City. Heres his assessment on the situation there. It was a very shocking mood, shocking and angry mood this morning as the people of gaza woke up on the heaviest air Strikes Air strikes for years. Gaza has not seen this sort of fight, israeli Air Strikes, the rockets fired on this scale for maybe four or five years. This was a shocking scene for the people of gaza to the scene to the scene of destruction from the Building Site down. Hamas Military Compound was hit this morning as well. A car was destroyed. Strikes from both sides have been relentless over the past 2a hours. Hamas launched 50 rockets into israel after confirming that some of its senior leaders were killed in israeli strikes. My colleague Tom Bateman is in the israeli city of ashkelon. This was what happened earlier. Sirens. Explosion. That is an interception. Lets get inside. Inside close the door. That was an air raid siren. We were just in the garden and then we ran to the shelter. It is onlyjust been put here in the street, actually. We will move in a bit. We then heard the sound of interceptions as those rockets were shot down. This particular community here has been sustaining this really for over 36 hours or so now. They faced a barrage throughout most of yesterday and clearly we heard Air Strikes pound the Gaza Strip a couple miles away throughout the course of this morning into the afternoon, more retaliation and more fire from gaza. And listen to the language from the israeli Prime Minister today. Translation i told| the sons of darkness, hamas and the islamichhad terrorists, that their blood is forfeit. A short while ago, we eliminated the top commanders of the hamas general staff. Including the gaza brigade commander. This isjust the beginning. We will strike them with blows that they have not dreamed of. And heres the leader of hamas. Translation if they want to i escalate, the resistance is ready. If they want to stop, the resistance is ready. If they want to move out of jerusalem, the resistance is ready. This is the message we give to everyone. In the last hour the Un Secretary general Antonio Guterres has been speaking. He said de escalation was an absolute must. We are totally committed to promote all forms of dialogue by the parties and by other key actors that can be supportive of all the things necessary for the escalation but also for the revitalisation of the Peace Process that has been dormant for too much time. The recent incidents demonstrate how important it is to restart effectively the Peace Process because it is the only way i am a true believer that we need to promote a two State Solution leading in peace and harmony. This is the worst violence between israel and palestinians for years. Last night hamas fired over 100 rockets from gaza towards Tel Aviv. Israel claims since monday over 1,000 missiles have been fired from gaza, in total. Most rockets stopped by Israels Iron Dome Air Defence system. You can see that at work here in these pictures from the Israeli Defence Forces but many made it through. This was the aftermath in a Tel Aviv suburb today. Its the first time that the area has been struck by rockets from gaza. Im joined Byjustin Bronk who is an expert in Air Power at rusi. Thank you forjoining us. Is it important to state when we look at this that this is a complete Military Mismatch . I this that this is a complete Military Mismatch . This that this is a complete Military Mismatch . I think what is an interesting Military Mismatch . I think what is an interesting about Military Mismatch . I think what is an interesting about the Military Mismatch . I think what is an interesting about the military l an interesting about the Military Mismatch if you want to call it that if there is an effective stalemate because neither side can militarily achieve the goals they wish to achieve the goals they wish to achieve here. In fact both from a political Point Of View with their internal demographics, both have incentive to avoid this escalating too far, but equally both feel that both of these israeli leaderships and the leadership of hamas and Palestinian Islamichhad see it as essential for the credibility they continued to be seen escalate in this Tit For Tat manner but neither has Military Tools to actually eliminate the threat from the other. Israel of course much more powerful in a conventional Military Term but hamas mpij are well and once with a sympathetic population and the environment that when historically israel has moved in with forces and conventional forces on the ground has seen both sides take huge losses in a loss of condemnation to the escalate so there is a mismatch but interestingly neither side really has Military Tools to achieve their goals here or through further escalation. It is more in the political debate that the military one. , i, political debate that the military one. , g, g, , g, one. Israel Military Tools are well documented one. Israel Military Tools are well documented help one. Israel Military Tools are well documented help us one. Israel Military Tools are well documented help us understandl one. Israel Military Tools are well documented help us understand what hamas has at its disposal. Documented help us understand what hamas has at its disposal. Hamas has an Arsenal Of Hamas has at its disposal. Hamas has an arsenal of depending hamas has at its disposal. Hamas has an arsenal of depending on hamas has at its disposal. Hamas has an arsenal of depending on the an arsenal of depending on the estimate was 25000 and 7000 rockets. These are predominantly unguided in a few potentially from the rank essentially these are not precision, they are designed to be salvo. 5000 to 7000. But after they have some longer range rockets able to reach out to Tel Aviv. Essentially these are indiscriminate by nature. The iron Dome System, one of the features is it is very good at Working Out the trajectory of incoming rockets even when they are fired in large numbers. Working out which ones are going to land an unpopulated area some open land, farmland for example and not engaging those. The fact that is a key feature of the system is evidence in itself of the fact that these rockets arent even reliably capable avoid sitting quite large urban areas. They r mass weapon. Given everything we know about the army Dome System, have you been surprised the last couple of days that so many hamas rockets have got through . Mat that so many hamas rockets have got throu~h . , g , q through . Not necessarily. As somebody through . Not necessarily. As somebody who through . Not necessarily. As somebody who looks through . Not necessarily. As somebody who looks at through . Not necessarily. As somebody who looks at air i through . Not necessarily. As somebody who looks at Air Defence systems both low and high end around the world as a job, the army Dome System is from a technical standpoint pretty amazing. The performance that we have seen in some of the large numbers of interceptions taken place almost simultaneously is extremely impressive from a technical standpoint but of Course Iron Dome was never intended to and from a financial Point Of View could never be a total defence solution. It is intended to give a bit of electability and a little but a capability to take Rocket Salvo with a lower risk of life to israeli civilians. And over to give them ability not to feel they have to response immediately with defensive strikes every launch. And of course hamas with their arsenal of 7000 rockets and pi] are thought to have around three to 4000 as well and gaza, they alone can easily overwhelm the Army Dome by way of numbers. They have about 800 loaded at any given time for iron dome. His Brother And Lebanon has 100,000 rockets or so. Easily too overwhelming. Hezbollah. It is not a defence against a full Out Exchange. Not a defence against a full Out Exchange exchange. That is very helpful. Thank you exchange. That is very helpful. Thank you very exchange. That is very helpful. Thank you very much exchange. That is very helpful. Thank you very much indeed. L now to the us. The Republican Party has voted to sack Liz Cheney from her leadership role. Shes been in the Firing Line since speaking out against Donald Trump about the storming of the capitol and his claims the election was stolen. Liz cheney is the daughter of the former Vice President dick cheney. She represents wyoming in the us House Of Representatives and until this morning, she was chair of the house republican conference. That means she oversaw meetings held by republican members of congress while they discuss policy and legislation. That position made her the third ranking republican. Not any more. Heres gary odonoghue. This is absolutely no surprise. It was a foregone conclusion. It has been for a couple of weeks now. Nevertheless, it is a huge Turning Point in the Republican Party. This is really the most senior republican to actually say never again to Donald Trump after he lost office. Republicans say this is about winning elections and that Liz Cheney is focusing on the past as in the previous election rather than future ones. House Republican Leader Kevin Mccarthy said he heard from members concerned about her ability to carry out the job as Conference Chair, to carry out the message. We all need to be working as one if were able to win the majority. He says its not about her criticisms of Donald Trump. But this story leads back to january 6. That was when trump supporters stormed congress. And just before that Donald Trump had given a Speech Urging supporters to fight Joe Bidens election victory. In the immediate aftermath, many republicans condemned trump. Including Kevin Mccarthy. He said. Democrats then launched a Impeachment Proceedings for the incitement of insurrection. And at that point most republicans began back pedalling including Kevin Mccarthy. Not Liz Cheney. She was one of ten members of her party who voted to impeach. And while he faced an Impeachment Trial republican senators backed him he was acquitted. And some wanted Liz Cheney removed from her role. At the time, Kevin Mccarthy advised against it, and she survived a vote. But she remained in trumps sights. This was his first public appearance since leaving office. And of course, the warmonger, a person that loves saying a person that loves seeing our troops fighting, Liz Cheney, how about that . Crowd boos. And that event the conservative political Action Conference marked a Turning Point. Both Kevin Mccarthy and Liz Cheney were asked if trump should be featured as a speaker. He said yes she said he shouldnt have a role in the future of the party. The final straw seems to have been this, last week. Liz cheney wrote an article for the Washington Post, where she asked repbulicans to stand for truth and the Rule Of Law no matter what the short term political consequences might be. Biv after that mccarthy began taking steps to oust her. Recently he was unknowingly recorded telling a Fox News Presenter ive had it with her. You know, ive lost confidence. Presbut Liz Cheney has remained unrepentant. Heres she is addressing congress yesterday. Millions of americans have been misled by the former president. They have heard only his words but not the truth. Remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar. I would not participate in that. I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the Rule Of Law and joins the former president s crusade to undermine our democracy. And after Todays Vote she was clear again on Trumps Role in the Republican Party. I will do everything that i can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the oval office. We have seen the danger that he continues to provoke with his language, we have seen his lack of Commitment And Dedication to the constitution and i think it is very important that we make sure whomever we elect is somebody who will be faithful to the constitution. Those Offering Support are largley those outside the political arena now. Heres former Senatorjeff Flake in the Washington Post saying that the party no longer cares about the truth. And this is amy edmonds, a former republican State Lawmaker in Liz Cheneys home state of wyoming. I think you have a strong move by her to walk away from the party leadership. I think you have a strong move by liz. When people are telling her she need to lie and stay there. She knows the party is in deep trouble and we need to find a way to actually unify and buy unified not by Purging Somebody is conservative is Liz Cheney. Donald trump was watching what happened in congress today. In an email to supporters. This is Congressman Madison Crawthorne and pro trump republicans are claiming victory. Congressman Matt Gaetz a Trump Ally retweeted an. Axios article that describes Todays Vote as a victory for him and his pro trump allies. Certainly Theres Evidence theres no shortage of republicans who support whats happened. In the latest Morning Consult politico poll, 50 of republican voters think cheney should be removed from her leadership role. Only 18 think she should keep it. Yet more evidence that trump still matters. Heres gary odonoghue. I think really since evenjanuary the 6th, we have known that the Republican Party has been captured by Donald Trump completely, even though he was out of office after january the 20th. His influence is still enormous. People across that party believe that he is may be the future in 2024 but suddenly the president in 2020 in the Run Up to the midterms in 2022. His endorsements matter. We meets with the matters. Who would cause out matters. We praise this matters. People hang on on his words inside the Republican Party. Because they believe republican voters are still hanging on his words. And that is the reality of the gop today. So Donald Trump still has an the Iron Grip the Republican Party. But while washington continues to rally around him where is he . He s spent most of his time here at His Resort Mar A Lago in florida. And hes been mingling with members there. Hes appeared as a Couple Pose for engagement photos. And tmz reported he crashed a wedding there. They said he gave a speech where he railed againstJoe Biden before raising a toast to himself, and then the happy couple. And this next video was shared widely on twitter. Donald trump standing on a patio in the resort, ranting again about the election he lost. Lets see what they find. I wouldnt be surprised that they found thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of votes. We will watch that very closely in after that we will watch pennsylvania and georgia. Watch michigan. Watch wisconsin. Watch michigan. Watch wisconsin. Watch new hampshire. They found a lot of boats up in new hampshire. This was a rigged election. Everybody knows it. Needless to say, it wasnt a great election. Republicans have been flocking to see him. Kevin mccarthy went, and discussed the future of the Republican Party with him. And Marjorie Taylor visisted. Shes the congresswoman who has openly supported the Conspiracy Q Anon movement. Hes been holding Campaign Events there too this was for Sarah Huckbee Sanders Formerly his press secretary, now running of arkansas governor. And since his social Media Platform bans, hes launched a website. Olivia beavers is Congress Reporter at politico what do you make of all of this i wonder . Are you surprised the republicans have swung so hard against a List Cheney . This republicans have swung so hard against a List Cheney . Against a List Cheney . This was something against a List Cheney . This was something that against a List Cheney . This was something that we against a List Cheney . This was something that we saw against a List Cheney . This was | something that we saw building against a List Cheney . This was something that we saw building up for months. There was an effort in february to remove herfrom her post of Conference Chair where she handles messaging for the Republican Party. She was saved because it was only led by the ultraconservative members. But then she kept coming up more more publicly about her perspective with Donald Trump involvement in the party and how Republican Leaders are taking them down that path with this basically like a Rubber Ban going back and being very pro trump. Basically it came to a head about two weeks ago at this republican retreat where she split from the leaders about various different things whether those who voted against certifying should be able to run for reelection, she said shes interested in running for president and potentially might do that and a 9 11 commission to examine the january six attack. This really got the Rank And File Members Anger because it disrupted their message of unity. So then we were hearing a few days after that that they were my Colleague Grace receiving Text Messages saying cheney is a goner. And then it started being they started working for her to take the position. Then it doesnt surprise me you are seeing the frustrations bubbling up over time but what does surprise me is how quickly the tables turn and they moved to astor. Help is how quickly the tables turn and they moved to astor. They moved to astor. Help me understand they moved to astor. Help me understand the they moved to astor. Help me understand the longterm they moved to astor. Help me understand the longTerm Strategy understand the long Term Strategy here, leaving List Cheney and her situation aside, if the republicans come behind Donald Trump, who is promoting something we know is not true in the election was stolen and promoting a load of other falsehoods. What is the political strategy here to get back the house in the senate and the presidency because theres not a lot of evidence that the majority of americans support that kind of approach. 3 americans support that kind of a roach. i, i, americans support that kind of annroach. , g, , approach. A lot of the republicans i talked to point approach. A lot of the republicans i talked to point to approach. A lot of the republicans i talked to point to how approach. A lot of the republicans i talked to point to how popular talked to point to how popular Donald Trump still lives with their base. So that is why you are seeing this strong pro Trump Message im sure it will be different if he had dropped in the polls but even talking to republicans, they say if Donald Trump decides to run again, in 2024, is almost certain to be the nominee. Whoever he chooses to endorse is expected to be the nominee. That is the type of power that he has over the party. It might not necessarily be the different conspiracies and lies that Donald Trump spouses, but the man himself Thatjust Trump spouses, but the man himself that just still holds trump spouses, but the man himself thatjust still holds this major role among the conservative base, so thatis role among the conservative base, so that is where you are sitting members getting online and i point to afterjanuary six, i have so many conversations with the republicans who started to pivot away, but time and i guess the recognition that supporters still were behind him lead them to go back in lean into their support of Donald Trump. Great to have you their support of Donald Trump. Great to have you on their support of Donald Trump. Great to have you on the their support of Donald Trump. Great to have you on the programme. Thank you for your help. Here in the uk, where more than 125,000 people have died, the government has announced an inquiry into its covid response. The prime Minister Borisjohnson says his handling of the pandemic will be placed under the microscope. Heres our deputy political editor, vicki young. After more than a year of covid trauma, what are the lessons the country must learn . The uk now has one of the highest Covid Death rates in the world. Why werent we better prepared for a pandemic . Were the right decisions made at the right time. You must stay at home. To protect the most vulnerable . And why did some things go better than others . When you get the call, get the jab. Will lessons be learned . Today we are a step closer to learning some answers. Amid such tragedy, the state has an obligation to examine its actions as rigorously and candidly as possible, and to learn every lesson for the future, which is why ive always said that when the time is right, there should be a full and independent inquiry. The inquiry is due to start next spring, and evidence will be given under oath. Fran had been married just three weeks when her husband steve died of covid last year. She told me she was pleasantly surprised when she heard todays announcement, but questioned the timing. What we would like to have is a rapid review, and that is something that can be done in a matter of weeks. That Wouldnt Tie up peoples time to the degree that a fulljudge led inquiry would involve, and that would hopefully begin to get some quick answers to some of the very pressing questions that need to be resolved so that other families dont have the same experiences weve had. But the government says doing it now would distract those still dealing with the pandemic. When it comes to the scope of the inquiry, the Labour Leader had this request. This inquiry will only work if it has the Support And Confidence of the families. And i urge the Prime Minister and the government to consult the families at the earliest possible moment. The government should also consult those on the Front Line who have done so much, whether in the nhs, Social Care or other Front Lines. The families of those who have died want answers, and the Prime Minister has promised transparency. Ministers and officials will be quizzed in public, thousands of documents will be published. But inquiries like this are never quick. It could be years, probably after the next election, before conclusions are reached. The hope is that looking back and Learning Lessons will mean no more names are added to this wall. But today an international panel highlighted serious failures across the globe and said without Urgent Change The World will be at the mercy of another disease outbreak. Vicki young, Bbc News, westminster. Now to another story from here in the uk, it is some of the pictures coming in still from Israel A Song Rockets Being fired by meka when in gaza into israel. Some of them are striking the land inside israel. Being fired from hamas. In the next half hour, we will get into a question a lot of people are asking. We know the long standing tensions and divisions between israel and the palestinians, the question people are asking is why at this escalated to such a degree at this moment. We will go through some of the main reasons that had fed into the violence that seeing playing out today into wednesday evening. Coming up today into wednesday evening. Coming up in the next half hour. I will see you in a few minutes. Hello there. The kind of Weather Weve had Today And Yesterday and over the last few days is the kind of weather were going to continue to see over the next few days. The rest of the week will bring further heavy downpours, but some spells of warm sunshine in between. And it is all because of low pressure still sitting overhead providing those showers or even longer spells of rain at times. This little frontal system here is providing some more persistent rain across some southern parts of the uk as we head through this evening and tonight, especially across the west country, into parts of South East wales, the South West midlands. Could see some outbreaks of rain developing across the South East of england as well. Quite a lot of cloud across the northern half of scotland, but elsewhere for Northern Ireland, southern scotland, northern and eastern parts of england, well have clear skies. In one or two places, itll get a little bit chilly. The vast majority will avoid a frost. And then into tomorrow, we start off with cloud and outbreaks of Showery Rain Across Southern England and the south of wales. A lot of that will tend to break up into a mix of sunshine and showers. And elsewhere, after a fine, dry start, you can see those showers getting going through the late morning into the afternoon. Some heavy with some hail and some thunder. In most places, temperatures up to14, 15 or 16 degrees, although it will be a little cooler for some of these northern and eastern coastal areas as more cloud rolls its way in. Now, for friday, we will find ourselves between Weather Systems low pressure to the east, low pressure to the west but in between, were in something of a no mans land. We start to see a northerly wind trying to establish itself. Its not going to have much luck. Its not going to bring a big cold arctic Blast Or Anything like that, but it will bring a chillier feel to northern and eastern areas of the uk as we head through friday. And quite a lot of cloud here as well, whereas for the South West of england, wales and Northern Ireland, once again its a mix of sunny spells and heavy, thundery showers. Temperatures for most up to 14 15, but where youre in that northerly flow, maybe just ten for aberdeen, 11 for newcastle. And then through the weekend, a band of rain will sweep its way eastwards through Friday Night into saturday. And then low pressure will assert itself once again, and that means the sunshine and Showers Theme will continue. Now, the showers will be quite well scattered. Some places will avoid them, others will see quite a few. Some of them will be heavy with some and Thunder Mixing in, but in between the showers, therell be some spells of sunshine. And in that sunshine, Itll Feel fairly warm. Hello, im ros atkins, this is outside source. The violence in israel continues to escalate. This Tower Block in Gaza City was brought down by israeli Air Strikes. The hamas Military Chief In The City has been killed. Weve also heard from israels Prime Minister. Translation this is just the beginning. I we will strike them with blows they have not dreamed of. Were going to look at how violence between israel and the palestinians has reached this point. Also us republicans vote to remove one of their leaders, Liz Cheney, over her criticism of Donald Trump. She was one of the republicans to vote to impeach him. The covid 19 pandemic was preventable, according to an independent report calling the global response a toxic cocktail. And well examine reports of Breakthrough Infections, positive covid cases in people who have been fully vaccinated. Lets spend a few minutes here looking at how the unrest in jerusalem has escalated into conflict. The violence between israel and palestinians has escalated rapidly. There have been clashes at the Al Aqsa Mosque injerusalem. Hamas is launching Rocket Attacks on israel. Israeli is carrying out Air Strikes in gaza. And the funerals have begun, with deaths on both sides. These tensions reach back decades, but why have they escalated now . There are many reasons. Here are six. The first concerns growing palestinian protests. Some were sparked by an imminent ruling on six palestinian families who are threatened with eviction in the neighbourhood of sheikh jarrah. Its connected to a lawsuit brought by israeli settlers, and these protesters see that as part of an effort to drive them from eastjerusalem. There have been regular clashes with the police. There have also been palestinian protests at Damascus Gate injerusalems old city after israeli police erected barricades. This was exacerbated by Ultra Nationalist Israelis Marching nearby. The next reason is the calendar. This year, the end of ramadan has coincided with several important dates for israelis. There is also a few very combustible anniversaries, including jerusalem day. Thats a day when mostly right wing israelis celebrate the conquest of eastjerusalem in the 1967 war. And they mark that usually with a Flag Parade thats very provocative and goes right through the muslim quarter of the old city. The next factor is politics. Israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under pressure. After the recent election, his rivals are now trying to form a new government. Palestianian politics is also deeply divided. Hamas controls gaza, fatah controls the west bank. Recently elections were postponed, much to hamas frustration. More broadly, palestinians have felt marginalised after the us brokered the Abra Ham accords. This normalised relations between israel and the uae and bahrain. And so while neither Hamas Or Mr netanyahu would put it this way, a conflict could serve political purposes for both. Bear all of that in mind the protests, the dates, the politics as we turn to the next factor, what happened in jerusalem on monday. Israeli police clashed with thousands of palestinians in the compound of the Al Aqsa Mosque. Over 300 palestinians and 20 police were injured. And this was all at a site which is hugely sensitive. Its Sacred Tojews and muslims. Afterwards, israel blamed extremists. Palestinian leaders called it brutal. And the un said this. In some instances, particularly when the police entered the Haram Esh Sharif and Temple Mount Compound using tear gas, stun grenades, Sponge Tip bullets, physical force, and in some cases that appeared unwarranted, disproportionate or indiscriminate. Hamas in gaza watched these events. Our Fifth Factor was its decision to act. On monday around 6pm local time, it began firing rockets. Israel swiftly launched multiple strikes in return. And this has continued hundreds of hamas rockets, hundreds of israeli Air Strikes. Hamas and israels long time animosity is playing out once more. And as it has, our sixth factor has also been on show the rhetoric being used by both sides. Translation and we will further intensify the power of our attacks. J hamas will be getting. Blows it will not expect. Translation if they want to i escalate, the resistance is ready. If they want to stop, the resistance is ready. If they want to move out of jerusalem, the resistance is ready. Language like that makes escalation more likely. Put all of that together and we start to explain the situation. But lets be clear underneath recent events remains the long Term Failure of israel, the palestinians and the world to find a lasting peace. And that failure explains what were seeing now, and why well see it again. Were going to stay with the escalating violence lets turn to coronavirus. An independent panel appointed by the who has looked at the Worlds Response to the pandemic and says there were serious failures by both the World Health Organization and governments. Heres one of the panel members. We have identified failures at every stage, and we do believe that it could have been possible to prevent this pandemic. They say those failures were mainly about acting too late. For example, they criticise the who for not declaring the outbreak an international emergency earlier. And they say countries were scrambling for protective equipment instead of preparing hospitals for covid patients. With that in mind, the panel made recommendations. They say there should be a new global Disease Surveillance System to share information about emerging illnesses. And they say countries should plan and invest now, so its not too late when the next Health Crisis hits. Heres another panel member. So i ask the Rhetorical Question do nations really want to go through all this again . Thats my answer to what i hope there will be resolve now to address the issues that need addressing. So, criticism for the actions of both the World Health Organization and governments. Heres david nabarro, the whos special envoy on covid 19. Always when you look backwards, you can say, oh, yes, we could have been a month, a week quicker here or a month quicker there. I and i think all those criticismsl will be heeded and there will be a lot of campaign to them. But i have to say that at the same time as criticisms are given to the World Health Organization, remember that the real people i who have to actually deal with a pandemic like this| are the leaders of| individual nations. And we ought to be asking a lot of national leaders i i what were they doing in february. 2020 when the who was giving very clear instructions as to what to do |to stop this thing from spreading. Were the countries following the Whos Advice . With more on this, heres our correspondent in geneva, imogen foulkes. Weve had 15 months of this pandemic and 3. 3 Million deaths. Its not a surprise, then, that a report looking into how we handled will find some faults, and this report has found many. It says the World Health Organization should have declared that international Health Emergency a good week earlier. It says it hesitated to use the pandemic even though that was the word that spurred countries into action. They didnt declare a pandemic until march. Its also got a lot of criticism for member states. Though they slept for the entire month of February 2020 and with the report says, and did not act until there Intensive Care Units were filling up. So a lot needs to change. Basically our global Health Structure from top to bottom. And going forward, this report has a number of recommendations. This should be the last pandemic, it says, and to achieve that, we need the who to improve but also to be stronger. It needs to be able to have the power to monitor Infectious Disease Outbreaks and call out countries that are not being open about them. It needs a Surveillance Unit with 100 transparency, and for now to make sure we get through this pandemic, this Report Calls on wealthy countries, g7 countries to invest 19 Billion in Vaccine Access for low income countries. Thats a lot of money. But having other pandemic, not acting now, will cost a lot more. I want to talk about reports of Coronavirus Infections in people who have received covid 19 vaccines. Theyre known as Breakthrough Infections. Heres Channel News Asia reporting a cluster of cases at an airport in singapore. Each of the yellow dots in this graphic are fully vaccinated people who tested positive. They account for 11 of the 18 cases. This is a New York Times report about the yankees baseball team. Three cases have been confirmed. All three are fully vaccinated. And the World Health Organization is investigating data from the seychelles. Its the worlds most vaccinated country. Nearly 60 of the population have received two doses. But as you can see, in recent weeks, coronavirus cases have spiked. More than third of those testing positive are double vaccinated with either Chinas Sinopharm or the astrazeneca jab. This is the view on that from the World Health Organization. The vaccines we have right now in the market, they dont. We still have Data Proving that they are efficacious against severe disease. Actually theres less data about transmissibility. So i dont know the specific situation of seychelles, but sinopharm has been very much used globally, and i think its 62 Million doses have already been applied and it has been considered both safe and efficacious. Another possibility is that some vaccines dont work as well against particular new variants of covid 19. Ravi gupta is professor of Clinical Microbiology at cambridge university. Hes investigating new strains of covid. What is your best estimation of a people are tested positive after a Double Vaccination . 5 people are tested positive after a Double Vaccination . People are tested positive after a Double Vaccination . As our Colleague Ust Double Vaccination . As our colleague just mentioned. Double vaccination . A report from the italian island known as the gateway to europe. In the last few days, more than 2000 migrants have arrived there and we will hear how they are doing and how those living on the island are doing. Danny street says Boris Johnson Danny Street says borisjohnson has apologised on deservedly on behalf of the government for the events that took place in ballymurphy in 1971. Timber killed in the wake of an operation by the british army. Yesterday at those families when a 50 Year Fight when a coroner ruled they were entirely innocent. Here is more from our ireland correspondent. Those verdicts and those findings provided a huge sense of vindication for the families of the victims here. It was a big moment for Northern Ireland. Their Loved Ones names were publicly cleared and the coroner found names were publicly cleared and the coronerfound in many cases names were publicly cleared and the coroner found in many cases the soldiers used force. Almost immediately after that moment yesterday, there were calls for an official apology. Sinn feins Michelle Oneill said she was pressing the promised her to say sorry. There will be understood in a separate today is there was a virtual meeting between the first and deputy first ministers of Northern Ireland and borisjohnson, and we usually get a read out from ten dentistry as a result of these conversations, a summary of what was said and in that we are told the Prime Minister did apologised for so the readout says that he apologised unreservedly for the events that took place in the huge anguish that the lengthy pursuit of truth has caused the families of those killed. But there has been a rather underwhelmed response to that here in Northern Ireland. The initial reaction from families of the Ballymurphy Victims is they would have rather had an apology more directly to them rather than in a private Phone Call with political leaders. They certainly dont see it as a public apology. We also get the same sense from a Sinn Fein is whether they really dont see this as a official apology as such. So such was the scale of the tragedy in ballymurphy and the conclusive findings of the Corner Yesterday that the victims were wholly innocent, you can expect there to be many more calls here in Northern Ireland for borisjohnson to go much further. This is outside source live from the Bbc Newsroom. 0ur Lead Story is israeli Air Strikes demolish another Tower Block in Gaza City. International concern is growing over escalating violence between israel and the palestinians. In the last few days, more than 2000 migrants have arrived on the mediterranean island of lampedusa off the coast of italy, seen as the gateway to europe. Its six years since the first migrants made the crossing, and there are fears that over the hot summer months, when the waters are calmer, more people could arrive in search of a better life. Mark lowen reports. Shadows seeking the light of europe. After days at sea, each step on land is controlled. They risked a perilous crossing from libya, buffeted by high winds. And even though theyre detained here in italy and taken to guarded camps, theyre safe and alive. By day, too, they arrive. More migrants picked up at sea aiming for the island of lampedusa. Over 2000 landing here since the weekend. This gateway to europe is under renewed pressure, battling the pandemic while carrying the hopes of the desperate. Six years since the height of europes migrant crisis, they are still coming. In lesser numbers now, but this is a third straight day of arrivals. The question is whether this is just a temporary spike or whether it is the start of a Summer Rush to europes shores. For the Eus Frontier countries like italy, migration remains an intensely political issue, and for some here, the hospitable welcome has worn thin. Translation its time to say enough after 30 years. I wanted the camp to be closed immediately and a naval blockade so that they Cant Access the island. They should be helped in their own countries, not come here where the authorities spend millions on them, but let us die. Through europes Outer Door into a waiting room. But with the camp full, dozens are left outside. Many here will have asylum claims rejected, but its unclear how many of those will actually be sent back. You speak some english, yes . Some. 0k. We cant speak to people . No, no. Ok, were being told that we cant speak to the migrants. But from inside the camp, the stories came to us. I want to work. I want to feed my family, they are dying. I lost about four sisters all because of hunger. The robbers come to your house, my own house in libya, and robbed me. Even now, i Cant Use this hand. What about people who would say to you that you have come in an illegal way . No problem, let them say i come in an illegal way, because they dont know what happened. So let them say that. But if they ask me, they hear the story, theyd understand my pain. Its hands to mouth here, but for some, this is better than what they left behind. And as long as dreams of europe remain, many more will follow in their tracks. Mark lowen, Bbc News, lampedusa. Were going to stay with the escalating violence between israel and gaza. Lets have a look at some international reaction now. The International Criminal Court has released this statement saying that it is monitoring the situation for possible War Crimes. Weve also heard from the us secretary of state. The united states remains committed to a two State Solution. This violence takes us further away from that goal. We fully support israels right to defend itself. Weve condemned, and i condemn again, the Rocket Attacks in the strongest possible terms. A few hours ago, the un Security Council met to discuss the situation. Nada tawfik is in new york. What was said . They got a briefing from the un what was said . They got a briefing from the un middle what was said . They got a briefing from the un Middle East what was said . They got a briefing from the un Middle East envoy, i what was said . They got a briefing | from the un Middle East envoy, he really urged international action. Reiterating that its been civilians who have paid the highest price. But members were largely unified. 1a out of 50 members agreed that it was time for the Security Council to express concern, to condemn the violence came as a call 480 escalation. What we heard was from senior diplomats was it was the us who began blocked any Security Council action. They believed as a as a public way that they dont think a Council Action is moment will be helpful. They think that its more productive for them to work behind the scenes to try to get some movement. Butjust in the last hour, we had the European Members of the Security Council come out with a statement for so they decided not to wait for the united states and not only did they express concern about the latest escalation and really call for both the rockets to stop from gaza and also the italy government to act proportionately, they also went back to issues that were addressed on monday in terms of expressing concern about illegal Settlement Activity and also the violence that we have seen in east jerusalem, especially as some of the muslim holy sites. Lats jerusalem, especially as some of the muslim holy sites. Muslim holy sites. Lots of words and most of which muslim holy sites. Lots of words and most of which we muslim holy sites. The Security Council meets every single month on this agenda, on the is really palestinian conflict and yet nothing changes and i think thats what a lot of the public are talking about as we seek these harrowing scenes, as we see these harrowing scenes, as we see the worst violence we have seen since 2014. As again with the international community can do. Now we know that this new administration, Thejoe Biden Administration, the Joe Biden administration, Thejoe Biden Administration and said they are going to send their envoy to the Region to speak to both sides. But at the same time we know that the administration is focusing on different foreign policy objectives, the rise of china, tackling the pandemic is that we know the Body Administration is really not trying to get bogged down in the Middle East i think that will make for a dynamic to see and certainly watch how that will affect what we are seeing in the Region. Karadzic was sentenced to life by an international War Crimes tribunal five years ago for his involvement in the Srebrenica Massacre in 1995. Lets get more from our diplomatic correspondent james landale. Radovan karadzic was On The Run for 13 years before he was eventually arrested. And then eventually his case went to trial at the Un Tribunal that was looking at all the allegations about War Crimes during the war in the former yugoslavia. And after a long period of time, in 2016, Radovan Karadzic convicted by the court of genocide and crimes against Humanity And War crimes. And specifically the Genocide Conviction was for the murder of 7000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys in a place called srebrenica. That is burnt on the soul of europe because its possibly the worst massacre of individuals and civilians since the second world war. He was convicted, as i say, he was sentenced to 40 years in and jail but a couple of years ago that sentence was increased to life. And after that, theres a discussion that goes on between members. Where should he go . Because he cannot be held forever at the decision facilities facilities in the netherlands. So britain has stepped forward to say that they will take mr Radovan Karadzic for the rest of his life, that he will serve his Life Term in a british jail. Essentially this is a british decision to say that this is a responsibility that they will take on on behalf of the rest of the united nations. Documentation which i just started going through talks as expeditiously as possible but certainly it will happen relatively soon. We are not being told where he is going and things like that. That has been kept confidential at the moment. And that finishes this edition of the programme. Thank you very much. Much more info on the stories we cover at the Bbc News website. See you tomorrow at the usual time, bye bye. In most places, temperatures up to 14, 15 or 16 degrees, although it will be a little cooler for some of these northern and eastern coastal areas as more cloud rolls its way in. This is Bbc News. The headlines at 8pm. Israeli strikes destroy another time block in gaza amid warnings of a full Scale War by the united nations.
