And the head of the International Olympic committee calls off a visit to japan but the organsiers insist the tokyo games will go ahead. Several events to bring you from israel. First israel has carried out air strikes on gaza, hours after rockets were fired from the territory towards jerusalem. It comes on a day of intense violence between palestinians and Israeli Police at the Al Aqsa Mosque compound which is one of the most sensitive sites injerusalem. In the past few minutes, these pictures have come into the newsroom. This is a free thats caught fire outside the Al Aqsa Mosque. Its unclear how it started. This is a fire. Tom bateman joins me from jerusalem. Tom, what do you know about this fire . ,. , tom, what do you know about this fire . ,. ,. ,. , tom, what do you know about this fire . ,. ,. , fire . Its not clear, as you say, how that fire . Its not clear, as you say, how that fire fire . Its not clear, as you say, how that fire began. Fire . Its not clear, as you say, how that fire began. The fire . Its not clear, as you say, how that fire began. The point | fire . Its not clear, as you say, i how that fire began. The point is about these confrontations that have been taking place, is that theres quite a lot of stuff flying around in the air, not least Stun Grenades used by the israelis, firecrackers them by the palestinians. But obviously anything, and we saw earlier in the day pictures emerging from inside the mosque itself of confrontations appearing to really enter the building. And those images are part of the issue here, because for palestinians and muslims, for the third holiest shrine in islam, thatis the third holiest shrine in islam, that is something that is shocking for them to see. And i think thats why there had been these International Calls for calm i had, it was always going to be a tense and difficult day injerusalem. Ahead. And now its devolved into very serious escalations between militants in gaza and israel, as rockets fired towards jerusalem militants in gaza and israel, as rockets fired towardsjerusalem a very unusual event, but there were sirens going off injerusalem and these air strikes by the israelis and the Palestinian Health ministry admitting five palestinians killed and that. , , the unrest began early on monday ahead of a planned jewish nationalist march, and over 300 palestinians were injured. Let me show you some of the videos thats come in. This is the Al Aqsa Mosque compound. For over an hour, police fired Stun Grenades, Rubber Bullets and tear gas at palestinians, who in turn threw stones and other objects. This footage was released by Israeli Police. These are Israeli Security officers during one confrontation. And they say thousands of palestianians barricaded themselves inside the mosque overnight and were ready with stones and Molotov Cocktails in anticipation of a confrontation. Then this shows Police Firing tear gas. And we see a wounded man being carried away. Were told 20 Police Officers were injured. So thats outside the mosque. This was inside. You can hear the noise of the confrontation outside, and banging. Some videos on social media showed stun Grenade Canisters landing inside the mosque. Then this is the aftermath. Lots of debris, shoes and broken pieces of window scattered across the mosque. We also saw pictures of burnt carpet and a burnt koran. The Palestinian Red Crescent says 228 palestinians have been taken to hospital for treatment. Seven are in a critical condition. Tom bateman saw some of the events as they unfolded. Well, in the compound itself, i mean, if you look behind me here, you can see the Dome Of The Rock, the mosque with the black roof there, to the side. Now, i mean, i got here before 9am local time, and what had always feared to be a day of extremely high tensions, things and confrontations were already starting as i came. Beneath the walls, the Dome Of The Rock here, heavily Armed Israeli Border Police had entered in the compound, they were Firing Volleys of Stun Grenades at palestinians on the plaza there, who were throwing stones and other objects at the police. Some of those confrontations then appeared to enter the mosque itself. And, in a period of over 2 3 hours, there were continued clashes. Israeli Border Police were trying to push the palestinians out of the compound and they did at various points, people were congregating around lions gate here where further Stun Grenades and water cannon were used against the palestinians, some running through the muslim graveyards here, away from that. That was inside the old city. There were clashes too outside the old city walls. This was posted by Israels Foreign Ministry showing the moment an israeli driver struck a palestinian protester after he came under attack. The Al Aqsa Mosque compound sits inside the old City Ofjerusalem. Its sacred to bothjews and muslims, and has been a frequent flashpoint between palestinians and israelis. Its located on a Hilltop Complex known by muslims as the haram al sharif, or noble sanctuary. Its the third holiest site in islam and home to the Dome Of The Rock thats where many muslims believe the prophet muhammed ascended to heaven. Forjews, this is known as temple mount and regarded as the holiest site injudaism. Its also the location of the wailing wall or western wall. Israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the events a battle between tolerance and intolerance, between lawless violence and order. He goes on. Palestinians strongly disagree. Heres their Prime Minister. Translation i hold the Israeli Government fully responsible i for what the worshippers are exposed to in the blessed Al Aqsa Mosque. I warn of the consequences that will result from such incursions, as well as the attempts to evacuate the people of Sheikh Jarrah, the original owners of the land from their homes. Tensions were building ahead of Rally Byjewish Nationalists marking the anniversary of israelis Annexation Of Eastjerusalem in 1967 during the israeli arab war. The rally was due to take place at 4pm local. Organisers cancelled it, though some gathered anyway. Here Arejewish Nationalists carrying flags outside the old city. Palestinians, who Claim Eastjerusalem as the capital of their future state, see the anniversary as a deliberate provocation. While israel, whose Occupation Of Eastjerusalem is considered illegal under international law, considers the whole City Ofjerusalem as its unified capital. These are live pictures from jerusalem. Palestinian officials are also saying nine people have been killed in an israeli air strike in gaza. It said to be in response to this. This bbc footage shows smoke from rockets fired towards israel. Hamas the Palestinian Group which controls gaza said it fired seven rockets in response to israeli aggression. One of them landed just ten kilometres west of centraljerusalem. This was the damage. Heres tom bateman again. Were at Damascus Gate, one of the entrances to the muslim quarter of the old city. Its been reasonably or relatively calm, given the events earlier in the day. As we were here, suddenly, an Air Raid Siren which, injerusalem, is an incredibly rare event. We then heard, within a moment or two, what sounded like the sound of blasts from israels Iron Dome Antimissile system presumably firing down missiles, and i think the expectations here are that those were missiles fired from the gaza strip. The israeli army has confirmed that sirens have been going off in various parts of the country. And as that happened, palestinians were celebrating as those sirens went off. You see now the water cannon, the Stun Water Cannon moving down the street here, just firing if we can move the camera there towards palestinians. If you look over to the left here, you can see people running away. This is skunk water, a foul smelling liquid that is fired from these vehicles to try and disperse crowds, people running away. What had happened immediately after that siren and after those interceptions was that dozens of palestinians came up the steps of Damascus Gate here, many cheering and celebrating what was going on, shouting, god is great. And that completely changed the mood at that moment, and thats when we see Israeli Forces at this point moving moving in at this point, trying to push people back. This didnt come out of the blue. The past few days have seen the heaviest Clashes Injerusalem for years. There are two events that are the focus. This was the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in East Jerusalem on sunday. Palestinians have been staging protests against legal efforts Byjewish Settler groups to evict them from their homes. The lawsuit, which dates back to 1972, argues that the land belongs to the ancestors ofjewish settlers. Palestinians though see it as a Wider Campaign to force them out of parts of eastjerusalm. This was also on sunday. Since the start of ramadan, clashes have broken out nightly between police and palestinians protesting against Security Barriers outside Damascus Gate one of the entrance s to the old city. Israels Prime Minister denies a heavy handed response to the protests. This was on sunday. Translation we shall not allow any radical element to undermine the calm in jerusalem. We shall decisively and responsibly impose Law And Order in it. We shall continue to keep the freedom of religion for all religions, but we shall not allow violent riots. Palestinians deny that charge. There are otherfactors to consider too. Heres our middle east editor, jeremy bowen. The conflict is there, its a given. Mr netanyahu, the israeli Prime Minister, in his many years in the job, has come to the conclusion that the conflict could be managed. The one that was a threat to israel was iran. So, the thing is though, that the conflict bubbles on, and in that conflict, jerusalem is the sharpest part of it all, and all of this has happened injerusalem, its a reminder of the power of the issue, launching rockets out of gaza. So injerusalem, and as wejust heard, it happened of course during ramadan as well, which for muslims, is a highly significant part of the year. So, put altogether, those sparks were enough to reignite things again. The question now is whether both sides will continue, if you like, if theyre satisfied, or whether this thing will escalate. The us and the eu have called for calm. Heres eu Foreign Policy chief. The situation, with regard to the evictions of palestinian families, and other areas of East Jerusalem is a matter of serious concern. I want to repeat what we have already been saying such actions are illegal under International Humanitarian law, and only serve to fuel tensions on the ground. Tom bateman, again. Tom, theres a lot of concern being expressed. Are either side doing anything to de escalate the situation . Anything to deescalate the situation . Anything to deescalate the situation . ,. ,. , situation . Not at the moment. I think we are situation . Not at the moment. I think we are very situation . Not at the moment. I think we are very much situation . Not at the moment. I think we are very much into situation . Not at the moment. I think we are very much into an l think we are very much into an escalatory phase of what is happening. What youve just set out there is extremely comprehensive, and i think it helps people to understand to some extent that there is notjust one single cause here, there have been multiple issues that have been playing and are converging together, to really one day today. There was always going to be this big question about the degree to which tensions would escalate. And they have done. In terms of looking ahead and the potential for things to be calm, first of all, what is at the very core of the conflict, so often particularly now, is that incredibly holy site. And whether or not things can be calm to their thatll be the first point. And more widely, the way the conflict has erupted and spilt out to some of the theatres we so often see around the gaza strip. Now thatll be a challenge for everyone involved, and i think the coming hours will be really critical to how the responses are managed and dealt with as to whether or not things can calm more quickly. Whether or not things can calm more cuickl. ,. ,. , , whether or not things can calm more cuickl. ,. ,. , quickly. Tom, thanks for your help on the story quickly. Theyve been caused by its biggest pipeline being shut for three days by a cyber attack. The Colonial Pipeline, run by a company of the same name, supplies these states in the east of the us. And normally it carries 2. 5 Million Barrels of fuel a day from texas thats 45 of the east coasts supply of diesel, petrol and jet fuel. But none of it has been flowing since friday because of this attack. Heres how. What theyve done is infiltrated the organisation, spread around to almost every computer they can find and encrypted the data so locked the users out of the systems, rendered the servers unable to do anything. They basically disrupted all the business processes that touch it systems completely, and they demand a Ransom Payment to unlock these systems. Its an extremely popular method of getting money from organisations. And its notjust Critical National infrastructure that we see being hit, like the gas pipeline. It sometimes like hospitals, schools and others. They dont need to be super sophisticated, they dont need to be a world class upper criminals. These attacks can be easier to pull off than people think, because most organisations are extremely vulnerable. This type of attack is known as ransomware because the hackers hold data hostage and demand a ransom. Heres a statement from the fbi confirming this attack was done by a group known as darkside. But it has now suggested that it didnt mean to cause disruption. Its released this statement on the dark web which says. In other words, theyre suggesting that an affiliate of darkside was behind this attack. We dont know if thats true. But the hackers did demand a ransom while threatening to release 100 gigabytes of data. We also dont know what that contains. Emily taylor is a cyber policy expert. Sometimes we use labels like ransomware and it sounds like its special, but it is extortion. Because when you deny people access to critical services, then the people who are trying to sort it out are under enormous pressure and thats how ransomware works. It makes it more attractive for the people involved tojust pay out to the criminals. As far as we know, Colonial Pipeline hasnt paid any ransom. They reported the attack to the fbi and took their pipelines offline on saturday. The Us Government has passed Emergency Laws to transport more fuel by road and the shutdown hasnt yet affected fuel prices. But the attack has highlighted the Risk Ransomware Poses to big infrastructure like pipelines. Cyber security researchers have been warning about this for years. Heres one of them. It is often the case that companies that are potentially vulnerable do not take even basic precautions against cyber attacks. So, for example, they allow the use of stupid passwords, like password123 and so on, on their systems as a way of getting access. So if people would clean up their systems and implement what we call in the business good cyber hygiene, theyd be a whole lot better off. Ulf lindqvist is a specialist in Cyber Threats to infrastructure. Thanks very much forjoining us. First of all, what do you make about that statement thats just been released on the dark web . This that statement thats just been released on the dark web . As he said, released on the dark web . As he said. Who released on the dark web . As he said, who knows released on the dark web . As he said, who knows if released on the dark web . As he said, who knows if thats released on the dark web . As he said, who knows if thats true released on the dark web . As he said, who knows if thats true or| said, who knows if thats true or not . But it is true that these criminals are out to make money, and ransomware is a bit like kidnapping but you know, youre holding something hostage and theres no guarantee youll get it back if you pgy guarantee youll get it back if you pay. So its very important that companies prepare for this to happen and train for it. Is companies prepare for this to happen and train for it. And train for it. Is infrastructure and train for it. Is Infrastructure A Reuular and train for it. Is infrastructure a regular target and train for it. Is infrastructure a regular target for and train for it. Is infrastructure a regular target for this and train for it. Is infrastructure a regular target for this kind and train for it. Is infrastructure a regular target for this kind of| a regular target for this kind of thing . A regular target for this kind of thin . ~ ~ a regular target for this kind of thin . ~ ~ thing . Well, like it said about bank. Robbers, they go where the money is and in this case, they go where the pressure is the highest to pay and get access back access to the system. But the problem is weve seen with health care and delivery in this case is they have a trained it to use the same systems and software as we do use on our desktops, meaning they have the same vulnerabilities. So its important to be prepared for this to happen and do all the usual protections to make the systems more secure. Though resumabl make the systems more secure. Though presumably one make the systems more secure. Though presumably one of make the systems more secure. Though presumably one of the make the systems more secure. Though presumably one of the problems make the systems more secure. Though presumably one of the problems to presumably one of the problems to make sure youve done all the preparation is that preparation is expensive, and not all companies have the budget necessarily to fend off a sophisticated hack. Off a sophisticated hack. Thats true, off a sophisticated hack. Thats true. Budgets off a sophisticated hack. Thats true, budgets for off a sophisticated hack. Thats true, budgets for security off a sophisticated hack. Thats true, budgets for security are i true, budgets for security are difficult, as other needs tend to take precedence. But the good news is theres collaboration happening in several countries between government and industry and Research Labs to provide Best Practices to provide ways to improve these systems in a way that still meets business needs. Flan systems in a way that still meets business needs. Systems in a way that still meets business needs. Can i ust ask you a auestion business needs. Can i ust ask you a question about h business needs. Can i ust ask you a question about the business needs. Can ijust ask you a question about the practicalities . I question about the practicalities . If a person is taken hostage, if they are released and money is paid, we know how that works how does it work in this kind of situation if a ransom is paid . The work in this kind of situation if a ransom is paid . Work in this kind of situation if a ransom is paid . The idea is you get the ke to ransom is paid . The idea is you get the key to decrypt ransom is paid . The idea is you get the key to decrypt your ransom is paid . The idea is you get the key to decrypt your data, ransom is paid . The idea is you get the key to decrypt your data, or ransom is paid . The idea is you getj the key to decrypt your data, or the ways to access your system again. But again, theres no guarantee youll actually get that after you pgy youll actually get that after you pay. And paying in it kidnapping just encourages attacks like this. Before we go, as you look across the us and how it defends. Are you satisfied its taking the threat largely seriously . I satisfied its taking the threat largely seriously . Largely seriously . I think the problem is, as in many cases the security, its not being taken fiercely until there is a major incident. Weve been talking about this for many years and weve done a lot of work, but it certainly needs more attention and funding. Thank ou ve more attention and funding. Thank you very much more attention and funding. Thank you very much. Thank more attention and funding. Thank you very much. Thank you. To afganistan, where the president has ordered Government Forces to match a three day ceasefire announced by the taliban. This is to mark the end of ramadan. President ghani also urged the insurgents to return to peace talks. They feel a distant prospect when we look at these pictures from a hospital early today after a bomb on a bus killed at least 13 people. The attack happened in the Southern Province of zabul hours before the taliban ceasefire announcement. And then this was the scene in the capital kabul, where families have been burying their daughters who were killed in explosions outside a Secondary School on saturday. At least 68 people were killed the victims were mostly girls between the ages of 11 16 who were leaving class. This tweet is from Nobel Prize Winner and activist malala yousafzai, she was shot in the head by the Pakistani Taliban in 2012 on her way to school. She says. We also heared from the kabul based education activist, freshta karim. Itts an extremely horrible time because eid is coming, and a lot of parents must be thinking to buy new clothes for their children. And children were looking forward to eid. But unfortunately, they lost their lives, and now their parents are mourning, and the entire city and country is in mourning since the incident has happened. We have seen children coming out really strongly, saying theyre sending a strong message that they will not stop, we will continue going. But we do understand that behind this resilience that children are showing, therell be some groups of children, especially female children, whose parents will decide to not send them. Afghanistan is also going through a difficult phase because, due to covid i9, we understand that the dropout rate will be very, very high this year. Adding on top of that, the security situation, it will put children in a very disadvantaged position, especially female children. The Afghan Government blamed the taliban for the attack on the school, but the group has denied involvement. It happened in a Western Kabul neighbourhood thats home mainly to shia muslims and is often hit by the local branch of isis, who are Sunni Islamist militants. Afghanistan has seen a surge in violence since President Biden announced that the complete withdrawal of us troops from afghanistan would be delayed, from may until september this year. The taliban are angry at the delay although its feared once all us troops are withdrawn without an effective peace deal in place, the violence will get even worse with other militant groups like isis gaining a stronger foothold too. Heres Secunder Kermani from kabul. The two latest deadly incidents in afghanistan both involve Passenger Buses being struck by roadside bombs. One in the Southern Province of zabul last night, and anotherjust north of kabul this morning. Officials say the taliban are responsible. And this comes, of course, as the country still reeling from the aftermath of that awful attack on a school on saturday in which the vast majority of the victims were young girls. That was likely carried out by the Islamic State group, but theres still no official of responsibility. The president has declared that tomorrow will be a national day of mourning. Meanwhile, the taliban announced a three day cease fire in honour of the muslim festival of eid which will begin later this week. Now any respite from the violence will be welcome, and the president has also ordered his troops to observe that three day cease fire but it is, of course, a very brief cease fire, weve seen similar ones on two occasions in the past, only for violence to resume shortly after the cease fire is ended. Another senior Afghan Leader has said that these short pauses in the fighting are, of course, not a durable solution that can only come from a negotiated settlement. But at the moment, talks between the Afghan Government and the taliban are stalled. Well have to see if this cease fire can help kick start those once again. Meanwhile, all remaining us and International Troops are still continuing to withdraw from afghanistan. Theyll all be out by september, if not earlier. The fear is that, if the government and the taliban have not reached a deal by then, the violence will only get worse. That finishes this half of outside source. Ill see you in a couple minutes time. Hello again. Its been one of those dramatic kind of sunshine and showers kind of days. Big storm clouds around as well. This was was malvern in worchestershire. You can see this lumpy cloud, thats mammatus, thats a sign of a really intense thunderstorm. And across northeast england, county durham, this was one of the places where we had a hailstorm working its way through. Now, last month was very, very dry. One of the driest places in april was leuchars in east scotland, just three ammendment of rain. Just three mm of rain. But leuchars is actually one of the wettest places so far this month. Weve already had well over a months worth of rain, and theres loads more rain to come through this week, notjust in scotland, but actually across the whole of the british isles. It is going to be a particularly unsettled run of weather. Why . Well, rain is associated with low pressure, here is our low pressure over the top of the uk. And the thing with this low pressure, normally, they move through towards the north and east and tend to clear out of the way, but this one cant do that because weve got a blocking area of High Pressure around scandinavia and west russia. And that is really keeping the low trapped over our skies here in the british isles. That means weve got more of these showers to come. So, radar picture picking up lots of showers still around at the moment. That will very gradually fade away across in land areas, but we will probably see some rain working its way northwards overnight in scotland. Some of that could be quite heavy still with a chance of a few rumbles of thunder. Temperatures around 6 7 celsius. Now, tuesday, This Rain In Scotland clears away pretty quickly, so scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England having the best of the morning weather with lots of sunshine. There will be showers, though, developing further south, and those showers will quickly get going across england and wales. Then they will become heavy thundery as they work northwards across Northern England into Southern Scotland and probably Northern Ireland. You may well see some of the showers merge together to give some longer downpours at times across the south of wales and southwest england, where its also going to be pretty gusty again. Now, by wednesday, another showery kind of day, although, there could be some longer spells of rain from a little low pressure just skirting into the south of england. Some uncertainty about that feature. Otherwise, showers with us again, but the winds are going to be lighter, and that means where you do see a shower or thunderstorm form, its going to be slower to move its way through. So, some hefty downpours. Showers then continue to be a feature of the weather through the rest of this week, this weekend, and into next week as well. Hello, im ros atkins, this is outside source. Doctors in india are struggling to treat a rare infection called the black fungus thats maiming vulnerable Covid Patients. You will not this one involves the nose, the sinuses and including the brain, so its absolutely devastating. That is a very high mortality rates. They called up a visit to japan, but the organisers insist that tokyo games will still go ahead. Lets update you on covid i9. Well start in india where the calls for a National Lockdown are not going away. Thats because of the case numbers. On sunday the country reported 391,008 new cases and recorded 3,879 deaths. That brings the total number of cases in india to over 22 million. Theres no National Lockdown but there have been state level lockdowns, including in west bengal. The is the situation there in one kolkata hospital. I guess we are ok as far as ppe and oxygen as of now is concerned. All our ventilators are running, in fact, they are being used on patients, so that is where the main crunch lies at the moment. So ventilators and hypo nasal oxygen, although the hospital has tried to acquire a few in the last couple of weeks or so, rather the last week, but still, what we feel is whatever is the number of additions, they seem to be getting used up in no time. Theres also an incresing number of recovering Covid Patients in india being infected with black fungus. Its a condition which was in india before the pandemic and affects those with weakened immune systems. Its a condition caused by a mould that grows behind the eyes. Heres dr sintha again. There is an antifungal which can be used to treat, but a lot of times, the definitive management includes very extensive mutilating surgeries in order to be life saving, like people have had to remove the eyes. This fungus involves the nose, the sinuses and including the brain, so it is absolutely devastating. That is a very high mortality rate. Lets move across the border to nepal and news on mount everest. China says it will stop its people mixing with those from nepal at the summit. Chinas installed a line of separation at the summit. This is because cases have surged 1200 in nepal in the past couple of weeks. Thats creating pressure on hospitals. Heres the kathmandu times reports Oxygen Shortages and several hospitals have stopped taking new patients. To europe now restrictions are lifting for people in germany whove been fully vaccinated. Theyll longer be subject to nightly curfews or covid testing for certain activities. But there is still a Strict Lockdown for the 90 who are not fully vaccinated. This of course is having a huge impact. Our next report looks at that through the experience of sex workers. In germany sex work is usually legal but its been banned under the restrictions. Heresjenny hill. Translation ive been here for 23 years. I love myjob. Janas out of work. Germanys brothels closed, sex work banned because of corona. Translation right now im ok. Ive had a help. I get a basic income each month from the government so my rent and things like that are paid. Were normal people, you cant wish us away, otherwise the business goes underground. Like many, aisha isnt registered with the authorities and told us she has no choice but to keep working. She didnt want to be identified. Translation i didnt think about the ban. I just kept working. Everyone did secretly. I dont get any help from the state. But there are charities which help with food and clothes. Early evening in one of berlins red light districts. We saw at least a dozen sex workers. What is causing concern are the ones you cant see. The corona restrictions are supposed to make life safer for all of us. The sex workers we have spoken to say for them they have simply made life more dangerous. And some suspect an ulterior motive. An attack on the industry itself. Translation throughout, we have felt we are notjust legally restricted but discriminated against on all levels. Of course, it can be safe. We have security and hygiene protocols. I they are not different from those of hairdressers or massage parlours. Zusu, casper and cleo are part of a Support Network Run by trans sex workers. We met them as they prepared to hand out supplies, advice to people on the streets here. Clients know that its illegal at the moment so clients, they can steal your money and just leave, because what are you going to do . Call the police . With hotels being closed, often we are expected to host clients in our homes but they dont want to give any information. So you just end up having to decide whether you are going to take the money and be unsafe, pay your rent. You know, thats not a nice situation. The pandemic s exposed parts of German Society some would prefer to ignore. What they really want here is recognition. Jenny hill, bbc news, berlin. The eu lags behind but it confirmed that they will not extend its contract for the astrazeneca vaccine when it runs out injune. The eu launched legal action against astrazeneca last month for failing to fulfil its contract. There have also been concerns across the bloc of Blood Clotting related to the vaccine. But the eu is increasing other vaccine orders, heres the president of the european commission. Concluded that negotiations with Biontech Pfizer for a new contract, a new contract looking forward to the years 22 and 23. The new contract secures 1. 8 billion doses of vaccines. The eu currently aims to vaccinate 70 of its population by septemeber. But that may not be enough to achieve Herd Immunity thats when thgere are so many people resistant to the virus that thats when there are so many people resistant to the virus that it struggles to maintain momentum. Apoorva manda villi is a Global Health reporter for the New York Times. Thank you for your help once again. Well, that was the plan originally, and i think we all originally, and i think we all thought that once we got to 70 or 80 , we would reach Herd Immunity, however, whats happened is as you know, the kent variant that was relating in the uk and is now in the us is more contagious, and when you have a more contagious version of the virus, Herd Immunity goes up, the virus, Herd Immunity goes up, the percent of the population that you need to vaccinate goes up, so now people think its more 80 85 , or maybe even 90 . Now people think its more 8085 , or maybe even 90 . Now people think its more 8085 , or maybe even 90 . Presumably, that creates a practical or maybe even 90 . Presumably, that creates a practical challenge, creates a practical challenge, because as you approach that figure for the first set of vaccinations coming have to think about boosters down the track in 2022 or 2023. Thats right. I think the uk is in pretty good shape because it looks like you have a population that is really willing to take the vaccines, which is not quite true in the us. You are doing very well at vaccinating older people, so those are all very good things will stop i think if you can continue to keep down the vaccine hesitancy, the uk has a decent chance of getting to Herd Immunity stop identity variance are the primary reason why we may need higher than 70 to achieve Herd Immunity, would we expect the virus to continue to change in the coming years . Yes, we do. I mean, the more that the virus circulates through the rest of the world, the more the chances that it will mutate in ways that might make it less susceptible to vaccines. So even if a particular country like the uk has managed to reach Herd Immunity, there is no guarantee that there wont be another version of the virus that comes along that will need the vaccines to be updated and for everybody in the country to be vaccinated again with perhaps a booster that is specifically designed for that new variant. Finally, you are referencing Vaccine Reticence in the us, and lastly, We Saw Againjoe Biden Emphasising providing motivation, attempting to to get this vaccine. Where have we got to without . To get this vaccine. Where have we got to without . Me to get this vaccine. Where have we got to without . Got to without . We are Making Inroads. Got to without . We are Making Inroads if got to without . We are Making Inroads. If a got to without . We are Making Inroads. If a lot got to without . We are Making Inroads. If a lot of got to without . We are Making Inroads. If a lot of people got to without . We are Making Inroads. If a lot of people are l inroads. If a lot of people are hesitantjust because they want inroads. If a lot of people are hesitant just because they want to wait and see and make sure that the vaccine really is say. It is a lot of mistrust associated with this vaccine being somewhat new, and also with the idea that covid is no big deal. So there are a lot of people who have been holding back, but i think is more and more companies and schools and even governments require vaccinations to travelling to work, i think a lot of those people will come around. I think a lot of those people will come around. , ~ i. ,. Come around. Thank you very much indeed. Come around. Thank you very much indeed you come around. Thank you very much indeed. You can come around. Thank you very much indeed. You can read come around. Thank you very much indeed. You can read her come around. Thank you very much indeed. You can read her report come around. Thank you very much indeed. You can read her report on| indeed. You can read her report on the New York Times website. Here in the uk, the Vaccination Programme has been very successful. More than 35 Million People have received a first dose of the vaccine thats two thirds of the population. And more than 17. 5 Million People have had both jabs. That means over a third of all adults are now fully vaccinated against coronavirus. And combined with a strict National Lockdown its had a big impact with Zero Coronavirus deaths recorded in england, scotland and Northern Ireland on monday and just four deaths recorded in wales. These latest figures come alongside more good news on the efficacy of the vaccines to explain heres our medical editor fergus walsh talking to my colleague fiona bruce. Stunning real world evidence on the Pfizer Biontech vaccine, two doses cuts your risks of dying from covid by 97 . I mean, thatsjaw droppingly good. We dont have the two does data on the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine simply because it was rolled out a month later, but that will come soon, and we knew already that one dose of either vaccine cut your risk of dying by 80 . We also know the vaccines cut the risk of transmission. So it is vaccines now rather than lockdowns and social distancing that will do the large amount of work in terms of controlling coronavirus. But having said that, its important that that Immunisation Campaign is completed. A third of adults, mostly the under 40s have yet to have a dose of vaccine. And coronavirus is here to stay. It will continue to cause problems, but unless we get some terrible new variant, there is no longer a threat that the nhs should ever be under threat of being overwhelmed by coronavirus, but while the epidemic here is now coming under control, the pandemic is farfrom over, and that is what is vital, that vaccines are rolled out globally. Borisjohnson has confirmed england will proceed to lift more Lockdown Restrictions next week. This report from our correspondent hugh pyms. Remember this . Scenes from life before the pandemic busy bars, restaurants and cinemas. From next monday in england, something similar is set to return to peoples everyday lives. This pub in liverpool has had to brave poor weather to serve customers in recent days. So, next weeks opening up indoors will come not a moment too soon. So many people i know that actually opened for a week or two and just decided, no, were going to leave it and well go back to the 17th. So, i think there is huge anticipation because this does feel like its the first main step of a road back to normality. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of the next move. This unlocking amounts to a very considerable step on the road back to normality, and i am confident that we will be able to go further. Is it possible that you might even bring forward thejune the 21st date for the final stage of the road map and the lifting of all legal restrictions . I think its very important that we should proceed cautiously but, as ive said many times now, hopefully irreversibly, and the secret of the success that weve had so far, i think, has been that we have been guided by the data, and weve given time to see the effect of each successive stage on the road map. The Official Uk Covid threat level has been moved down from four to three for the First Time Since september. So what does the data that has guided the latest moves actually show . The office for National Statistics survey of people in the community with the virus showed a sharp increase up until early january, then a steady fall, which continued in march and april, even after schools reopened and there was some easing of restrictions. Thats mirrored by daily covid hospital admissions, which peaked at more than 4,000 injanuary and then fell right back after lockdown and the impact of the vaccine roll out. Continued progress of the Vaccination Programme was a key test. In essex, a vaccine bus is travelling round the county. Is this your first vaccination . Designed by the local nhs team working with ford, here, it has been this delete deployed at a sports and Leisure Centre run by the local muslim community. In general, were hitting the target we need to in terms of cohorts and age groups, but i think the added facet the van brings is that we are getting into those pockets of the community who may be afraid or dont have the means to access normal health care services. Always make sure that your masks are on indoors. Face coverings will no longer be required in schools in england as part of the next stage of the road map. The thinking behind this and other measures is learning to live with the virus when case numbers are low, though local restrictions could be imposed if there are serious outbreaks. An extended reopening of indoor hospitality in scotland and wales stay with us on outside source still to come. Preparations are continuing for the on the big games despite the State Of Emergency over the pandemic. We will discuss with that the tokyo games should go ahead. Borisjohnson Boris Johnson needs borisjohnson needs to take a less confrontational approach to the issue of scottish independence, according to the former Prime Minister, gordon brown, Nicholas Turgeon has made it clear that in her opinion, another referendum is inevitable. Lets hearfrom sarah smith. The enormous question facing scotland about its future, Inside Or Outwith the uk, will not be settled soon, but the vigorous debate has already begun. From edinburgh, advice is being offered to london on how to keep the kingdom united. His muscular unionism, which is trying to make Britishness Compete with scottishness, just wont work. Project fear wont work. The scottish people are far too proud. Hes got to change. Hes got to realise that there is a big case for constitutional change. Will you work with him to make that happen . I think people will Work Together to try to put the case for scotland and britain, so i will complain to borisjohnson about what hes doing. Just as the tories, labour and the lib dems have to make the case for why scotland is better off inside the united kingdom, the snp now have to make detailed plans for the independence offer they want to make to the country. After brexit, they have to consider questions like the arrangements it is the case that you can in it is the case that the snp, at the moment, isnt able to answer a number of questions, like what the border with arrangements with england if we were two separate countries would be. Well, we do know certain fundamentals. We know the Common Travel Area would still obtain, so there is no restriction on movement from people going to scotland, england, wales, Northern Ireland or ireland, because thats all part of the Common Travel Area. But there would be for goods. Well, goods, possibly not for services. And goods, of course, we are some way away from the referendum, and by that time we should have some idea of what the uk has done in terms of the arrangements in Northern Ireland. The Parliament Starts work again tomorrow, with the pandemic as the first priority. There will be no moves towards another referendum until the Health Crisis has passed. But the debate on scotlands future is already well under way. Sarah smith, bbc news, edinburgh. This is outside source live from the bbc newsroom. Our lead story is. Rockets have been fired by palestinians into israel and missiles fired back by israel. The growing escalation of events of jerusalems mosque. Its just over 70 days until the tokyo olympics. And the build up continues to be dominated by two question will they go ahead, and should they go ahead . The head of the International Olympic assocation was supposed to be going to japan next week. Here he is, thomas bach. Hes now called that trip off. Hed been due to review the preparations and take part in the torch relay. The trips off because the japanese government decided to extend a State Of Emergency. This is why. Japan has recorded more than 6,000 cases of coronavirus for three days in a row. And only 2 of the population has been vaccinated. As you might imagine, japans Prime Minister is under pressure. When quesitoned by the opposition in parliament, he was forced to deny the olympics are being prioritised over the nations health. Translation in the Prime Ministers head, after all,. You are olympics first and regarding covid 19 measures, it cant be helped to think that they may have become secondary. Translation i think that is very rude, but i have never Put The Olympics first. In holding the events, we will take proper measures against infections of athletes and tournament officials so that they can participate with peace of mind. Theres some evidence the japanese public remains opposed to the games going ahead. One poll on monday showed a majority of people want it either cancelled thats about 37 of people or delayed, thats 28 . Bear in mind, its already been delayed a year. About a third still want the games to go ahead as planned. The organisers are pushing ahead. There was a a test event on sunday at tokyos olympic stadium, hundreds of athletes took part. Theyve held 11 of these trial runs across different sports in the past few weeks, all under strict coronavirus protocols. None of the athletes or officials involved have tested postive so far, in the athletics the us sprinter Justin Gatlin won in the 100 metres test event. He says The Real Thing Injuly will be a great olympics, with all the necessary Safety Measures in place ive been tested every day. I feel beyonce. Ifeel beyonce. Ifeel i feel beyonce. I feel beyond safe. Either saliva or nasal swab every morning. The bubble has been very successful. The only time ive ever seen the outside is when weve been on the bus to go to the track. We work out then go back to the hotel. We dont even eat in a cafeteria. Not every athlete is so sure. The tennis star naomi osaka represents japan heres what she said when asked was it appropriate for the games to go ahead. For me, im an athlete. And, of course, my immediate thought is that id want to play the olympics. As a human, i would say that were in a pandemic. And if people arent healthy and not feeling safe, then its definitely a really big cause for concern. Personalfactors are a consideration, too. Serena williams has four olympic gold medals and a three year old daughter called olympia. But the tokyo organisers arent allowing athletes to bring famly members with them. This was Serena Williams reply when asked, would that mean shed still be able to go . Erm, you know, i haventl really thought about that. Its a really good question. I havent spent 24| hours without her. So, that kind of answers the question itself. Michael payne is a former Marketing Director of the the International Olympic association. There is no opportunity to engage with the local population. So it is a very fluid situation, and i think at the moment cimino, everybody is trying to build confidence for the japanese public so they are not going to be exposed and that these will be safe and secure against upward we appreciate your time. Thank you very much for watching. Now and then. Thank you very much forwatching. I now and then. Thank you very much for watching. I will see you soon. Bye bye. One of the driest places in april was leuchars in east scotland, just three mm of rain. That will very gradually fade away across inland areas, but we will probably see some rain working its way northwards overnight in scotland. This is bbc news imjames reynolds. The headlines at eight oclock. The covid alert level is dropped as the Prime Minister confirms restrictions will be eased further in england next week.
