Campaigns. Lots of results to come. Here at holyrood, it is the most important election since devolution in 1997. The very future of The Union could be at stake, with Nicola Sturgeon s Scottish National Party seeking a second referendum on independence. Weve had our first few results. Its still too early to draw any firm conclusions, and the snp hAs so far held all its seats, but there does seem to be some evidence of Tactical Voting amongst Anti Independence supporters. We are still waiting for most of our results in wales. Labours hold on power hAs been under pressure from the conservatives and Plaid Cymru. I the conservatives and Plaid Cymru. I already am getting signals that may not play out As some people thought. That is quite an exciting thing to be looking at in terms of the politics and dynamics of it. There are dozens of contest to become mayor of English Cities and regions, including london, manchester and liverpool. Vicki young is with me once again to react to some of these results and give us analysis As we go on. And Reeta Chakrabarti is at the Touch Screen to bring us up to date. ~. ,. , the Touch Screen to bring us up to date. ~. , ii. , date. We have had 24 of the 140 Odd Enalish date. We have had 24 of the 140 odd English Council results and the English Council results and the overall trend is of a strong conservative surge forward against labour, particularly in Leave Voting areAs with one or two outliers, if you like. I will be using this giant Touch Screen to look at all of the data behind those results, a lot of that to come this afternoon. find data behind those results, a lot of that to come this afternoon. Welcome from Kirsty Wark and myself and As you join us, we are getting another look at the picture in scotland. I dont have to tell you that the scottish results are of prime importance today, given the potential for reshaping The Union of the United Kingdom. If those results go in a certain direction, of course, for the snp. Dundee City West hAs been declared, the snp are back with a slight increAse in their share of the vote. And John Curtice, we will talk to and a second, already saying that the snp in his view, so far, not putting in the kind of performance that will give them an overall majority, it is an early stage but that is his sense of it. ,. , , , early stage but that is his sense of it. There are no big surprises so far. It. There are no big surprises so far except it. There are no big surprises so far. Except for it. There are no big surprises so far. Except for the it. There are no big surprises so far. Except for the surprise it. There are no big surprises so far. Except for the surprise in i far. Except for the surprise in terms of the whole population, which is that the turnout is very high, the turnout in all of the postal voting and we could see these queues in various Polling Stations well after 10 oclock lAst night and people have really engaged with this election. Whether it is about local issues are not, it is much more likely, As Nick Eardley said, to be much more a fact that the constitution hAs been front and centre of this election, not leAst because the conservatives wanted it to be so. Whether or not Boris Johnson feels energised by his results so far in england, it might increAse his implacable opposition to allowing a second referendum, evenif to allowing a second referendum, even if there is a majority for parties supporting independence primarily, the snp and the greens, in scotland. If the snp and the greens together make a majority, As is expected, we are in, not only in scotland but in the uk, we are in Fora Scotland but in the uk, we are in for a constitutional argument that the lAst certainly over the next two years. On that point, i will join Reeta Chakrabarti to look| willjoin Reeta Chakrabarti to look at Notjust Willjoin Reeta Chakrabarti to look at not just that willjoin Reeta Chakrabarti to look at notjust that Dundee City result but some other results. There are 129 results expected but lets look at what you have got. 129 results expected but lets look at what you have got. At what you have got. These are the latest at what you have got. These are the latest results at what you have got. These are the latest results and at what you have got. These are the latest results and As at what you have got. These are the latest results and As kirsty. At what you have got. These are l the latest results and As kirsty wAs saying, so far there is not much change. All holding, aberdeen dons side, clydebank, Snp Holding, Dundee City. Some of the interest is in the data behind the actual results. Going into clydebank. And again. Here we go. This is the Snp Holding onto this seat, the snp s Marie Mcnair with the majority of 5200. This wAs and Snp Gain from Neighbour Labour in 2011. And they have hold held onto this in a healthy fAshion. But lets look at the share of the vote. The snp on 47, labour on 33. It is always a change that is so interesting. Look at that. Labour up so interesting. Look at that. Labour up by so interesting. Look at that. Labour up by 10 Percentage Points here in clydebank, the snp down a little and the conservatives down rather more. An interesting result. By contrAst out back to the list. Lets look at Dundee City west. Which kirsty wAs talking about. Snp hold with a big Majority Forjoe Fitzpatrick there. Nearly 13,000. Huge share of there. Nearly 13,000. Huge share of the vote. Well over half of it, 62 . And he hAs added to their share of the vote for the snp. And here in dundee, the Labour Share hAs gone down by 5 so quite a mixed bag here so far. In the scottish parliamentary seats. As you said, we have a handful right now, still a lot to go. Have a handful right now, still a lot to no. ,. , lot to go. Indeed. It is a fluid icture. Lot to go. Indeed. It is a Fluid Picture i lot to go. Indeed. It is a Fluid Picture. I wAs lot to go. Indeed. It is a Fluid Picture. I wAs telling lot to go. Indeed. It is a Fluid Picture. I wAs telling you lot to go. Indeed. It is a fluid l picture. I wAs telling you about John Curtices advice a short while ago. He hAs updated that after Dundee City west. This, he says, is a more encouraging result for the snp with a four Ase'>Point IncreAse, 3. 8 , a four Ase'>Point IncreAse in support and no sign of tactical switching from conservatives to labour. Whose vote is down by five points. He says this is a critical conclusion that if this result were to be replicated in the marginal seats that labour are trying to defend, then the snp would make some significant gains. We are keeping a sharp eye on this. Because it really does depend on the individual circumstances here. 24 us to reflect on. Lets bring in Laura Kuenssberg At Westminster. The scottish picture we can come to any moment. I cannot help wonder what you made of the Borisjohnson Help wonder what you made of the Boris Johnson flying visit to hartlepool, complete with his inflatable twin. I hartlepool, complete with his inflatable twin. Hartlepool, complete with his inflatable twin. I wonder if we can inflatable twin. I wonder if we can show inflatable twin. I wonder if we can show the inflatable twin. I wonder if we can show the viewers inflatable twin. I wonder if we can show the viewers those inflatable twin. I wonder if we can show the viewers those pictures . Which other politician at the top of the political elite can you imagine going to pose next to a picture of themselves As an Inflatable Blimp . The answer is borisjohnson. Perhaps the only one who would dare to some kind of feet like that. But his party so far in this complicated set of elections hAs a lot to be happy about. The Top Line and where he wAs for that visit is that when of a seat that hAs been labour for decades, hartlepool, which is important notjust because of the victory and the fact there will be another Conservative Mp on the backbenches but about what that represents more broadly. A proxy, if you like, what wAs a big question for the tories going into this, to what extent they they were expanding their grabber of areAs that used to be read, turning them blue, and that whopping result where they romped home In Hartlepool, notjust snaking it by any stretch. That is more evidence for the conservatives that they are managing notjust to sketch a new political map but to draw those lines in bold. We have seen that story repeating in some Council Wins across england and that provides tricky questions of the Labour Party today. If i provides tricky questions of the Labour Party today. Provides tricky questions of the Labour Party today. If i can bring ou back Labour Party today. If i can bring you back to Labour Party today. If i can bring you back to that Labour Party today. If i can bring you back to that recent Labour Party today. If i can bring you back to that recent scottish | you back to that recent scottish result you back to that recent scottish result in you back to that recent scottish result in dundee west. AsJohn Curtice result in dundee west. AsJohn Curtice said. Result in dundee west. AsJohn Curtice said, that is a more significant result. And this wAs the seat that significant result. And this wAs the seat that delivered the biggest yes vote at seat that delivered the biggest yes vote at 57 in the lAst scottish Independence Referendum. Do you think Independence Referendum. Do you think that Independence Referendum. Do you think that could prove to be an early think that could prove to be an early bellwether . It think that could prove to be an early bellwether . Think that could prove to be an early bellwether . It may do so, we wont have early bellwether . It may do so, we wont have the early bellwether . It may do so, we wont have the full early bellwether . It may do so, we wont have the full set early bellwether . It may do so, we wont have the full set of early bellwether . It may do so, we wont have the full set of scottish i wont have the full set of scottish results for at leAst another 24 hours but we do have the Opportunity Today to look at some of those key contests were the results may well have been extremely tight and used As real signifiers As to whether or not the snp is going to achieve the result they have been dreaming of, and encAse viewers have not been following this closely, for them it is not all about the Magic Number but if they reach the Magic Number of 65 seats in the holyrood parliament, that gives them a majority on their own and many of their supporters believe that gives them a very genuine, compelling mandate to Ask for another Independence Referendum. There hAs been no question that they are going to end up being the biggest party or not but it really hAs been in the margins, will they have to rely on the support of others to have an overall majority at holyrood, in which cAse you get politicians At Westminster arguing, which cAse you get politicians At Westminsterarguing, if which cAse you get politicians At Westminster arguing, if they did not win outright, why should we listen to what they are Asking for . But if they get to that Magic Number of 65, these key seats give such an indication of how they are getting there, that is why we are obsessing over the detail and listen carefully to whatJohn Curtices Number Crunching tells us, that really would make a big difference to what could be a very fraught political argument in the next few days. Thanks very much. We can look more in detail thanks very much. We can look more in detail at thanks very much. Lets have a look at a couple of the results so in glAsgow. Lets have a look at a couple of the results so far. Couple of the results so far. Starting in the Ast'>North EAst of Scotland And Aberdeen donside. The snp have held this seat, the majority is down slightly, still a very healthy majority, over 9000 votes. And Jackie Dunbar is the new msp for the area, turnout is up considerably, 50 57 . The change in the vote share. A big jump in the conservative vote share. What might be happening there, given that labour and the tories had around the same share in 2016, is potentially Anti Independence voters in Aberdeen Donside having backed the party that came second lAst time, perhaps the best place to challenge the Snp Party that opposes independence in the tories and that hAs resulted in a 6. 2 swing from snp to the conservatives. I should stress that it wAs still a comfortable hold for the snp. And in the central belt we can look at clydebank and milngavie. Traditionally this would be a Labour Stronghold but very comfortably snp. The majority is down from around 8500 and 2016 to just over 5000. A new candidate, Marie Mcnair, will be elected. And vote change, once again things get interesting. They were up tjy things get interesting. They were up by 10 , conservatives down quite a bit, snp down slightly. Could it be that voters in clydebank and milngavie, Anti Independence, have backed the party tactically . A swing from conservative to labour, 8. 5 . We dont know if that is what is happening, dundee west, for example, hAs seen the snp going up considerably with vulture but potentially that is something to keep an eye on. Both snp candidates are new candidates, so perhaps not that incumbent advantage and healthy majorities. They could be significant in tighter seats, though. Significant in tighter seats, thou~h. , ~ significant in tighter seats, thou~h. , significant in tighter seats, thou~h. , ~ , significant in tighter seats, thou~h. , ~ ,. Thank you very much. And at this point, why dont we just make i this point, why dont we just make the point after we look at scotland, we will come back to more scottish results As they come in, make the point that it is important to say that It Point that it is important to say Thatitis Point that it is important to say that it is not all plain sailing for the conservatives, despite that big win In Hartlepool and we have noted some Council Results in england As well. We will see how they do in parts of wales, they did very well in montgomery, As we saw earlier. In cambridgeshire, for example, it hAs not been such a good day for the conservatives. Lets look at these figures that we have just had in. They will help us. The conservatives have lost control of cambridgeshire council. On 28, the lib dems on 20, labour on nine. This area is normally a battle between the lib dems and the conservatives. Lets look at the change. The lib dems are up look at the change. The lib dems are up by five in an area that hAs been quite strong with the lib dems and again, parts of cambridgeshire are very strong in favour of remaining when that referendum took place, given we are still talking about the brexit effect. Conservatives down by eight and a share in cambridgeshire, 39 for the tories, 28 for the lib dems, 19, 39 for the tories, 28 for the lib dems,19, labour, and a quick look at the change. Conservatives down slightly, lib dems down slightly and labour up slightly. The greens up by 5 in a county again where they have been really working extremely hard. 5 increAse for the greens and we can see the Ukip Vote going down again. Interesting to see where that might have gone in this election. Ben schofield is in cambridgeshire. I havejust gone Ben Schofield is in cambridgeshire. I have just gone through the figures, why dont you talk us through it and what happened to the tories and the lib dems here . You are riaht, tories and the lib dems here . You are right. The tories and the lib dems here . You are right, the city tories and the lib dems here . You are right, the City Of Cambridge and this part are right, the City Of Cambridge and this part of are right, the City Of Cambridge and this part of South Cambridgeshire does like this part of South Cambridgeshire does like to book the national trehd~ does like to book the national trend. You mentioned the 2016 eu referendum, both supporting strongly remaining referendum, both supporting strongly remaining within the european union. In remaining within the european union. In the remaining within the european union. In the north remaining within the european union. In the north of Cambridge Date back to leaving in the north of Cambridge Date back to leaving. It is a tale of two halves to leaving. It is a tale of two halves really. But added to that, we can now halves really. But added to that, we can now say halves really. But added to that, we can now say that while the conservatives are making gains elsewhere in the country, it is a Story Elsewhere in the country, it is a Story Of Elsewhere in the country, it is a story of them losing seats in cambridgeshire. In 2017 they had 36 out of cambridgeshire. In 2017 they had 36 out of 61 cambridgeshire. In 2017 they had 36 out of 61 seats. They are now on 28, not enough out of 61 seats. They are now on 28, not enough to form a majority at county not enough to form a majority at county hall. But for me, the story is in the county hall. But for me, the story is in the south of the county with the liberal is in the south of the county with the Liberal Democrats shoring up support the Liberal Democrats shoring up support that they first showed in Bil Support that they first showed in big numbers in the 2019 local elections. They were on the control of the elections. They were on the control of the district council. They also made of the district council. They also made a of the district council. They also made a very good showing, the liberal made a very good showing, the Liberal Democrats in the General Election. Liberal democrats in the General Election, the candidate didnt win but they election, the candidate didnt win but they did better than they had done but they did better than they had done in but they did better than they had done in previous years. In that part of the done in previous years. In that part of the county that had six seats that were of the county that had six seats that were not contested by the labour that were not contested by the Labour Party. Of those six seats in 2017. Labour party. Of those six seats in 2017, five Labour Party. Of those six seats in 2017, five of Labour Party. Of those six seats in 2017, five of them had been won by the tories 2017, five of them had been won by the tories. Today, the Liberal Democrats swept all of those six seats, democrats swept all of those six seats, essentially being given an open seats, essentially being given an open door seats, essentially being given an open door because they were able to take votes open door because they were able to take votes that would have gone to the labour take votes that would have gone to the Labour Group. I have spoken to leaders the Labour Group. I have spoken to leaders of the Labour Group. I have spoken to leaders of both the labour and liberal leaders of both the labour and Liberal Democrat groups lately and they said Liberal Democrat groups lately and they said there wAsnt a pact or any kind of they said there wAsnt a pact or any kind of organisation that went to that, kind of organisation that went to that, the kind of organisation that went to that, the Labour Leader said it wAs simply that, the Labour Leader said it wAs simply the that, the Labour Leader said it wAs simply the pandemic had made Organising Candidates and a structure on the ground difficult. Make structure on the ground difficult. Make of structure on the ground difficult. Make of that what you will. What happens make of that what you will. What happens next . Could there be a rainbow happens next . Could there be a Rainbow Coalition between the liberal Rainbow Coalition between the Liberal Democrats, labour and the handful Liberal Democrats, labour and the handful of Liberal Democrats, labour and the handful of independent groups that have won handful of independent groups that have won seats . I am sure talks have started have won seats . I am sure talks have started in have won seats . I am sure talks have started in earnest and parties will be strategising what happens next. The leader of the Labour Group said she wAs the leader of the Labour Group said she wAs pleAsed with the result, excited she wAs pleAsed with the result, excited for the council to be in no overall excited for the council to be in no overall control. She is also italian by heritage and she knows how fragile by heritage and she knows how fragile Rainbow Coalitions can be. Another fragile Rainbow Coalitions can be. Lets look at another important Battleground And Thatis another important battleground and that is nottinghamshire in these english local authorities and to our correspondence there. Tell us first of all, what is at stake in nottinghamshire and what do you expect people to be looking out for in the next few hours . This expect people to be looking out for in the next few hours . In the next few hours . This is an authority that in the next few hours . This is an authority that through in the next few hours . This is an authority that through its in the next few hours . This is an authority that through its history hAs pAssed back and forth between labour hAs pAssed back and forth between labour and conservative several times labour and conservative several times but labour and conservative several times. But in recent years, nottinghamshire hAs been a real bellwether area. 2017, the lAst time there bellwether area. 2017, the lAst time there were bellwether area. 2017, the lAst time there were County Council elections, there were County Council elections, the conservatives came away As the biggest the conservatives came away As the biggest party but short of a majority and they had to strike a deal to majority and they had to strike a deal to form an administration. For the conservatives, it hAs been about consolidating their position. They felt very consolidating their position. They felt very confident doing thats coming felt very confident doing thats coming into that selection. They feel they coming into that selection. They feel they are riding the crest of a wave feel they are riding the crest of a wave after feel they are riding the crest of a wave after a very successful 2019 general wave after a very successful 2019 General Election after all of the countys General Election after all of the countys mps are conservatives. Now we know countys mps are conservatives. Now we know the countys mps are conservatives. Now we know the confidence wAs well founded. The first result where a steady well founded. The first result where a steady trickle of hold for various parties. A steady trickle of hold for various parties, but As the afternoon hAs progressed, the conservative gains have been progressed, the conservative gains have been coming in thick and fAst in gedling have been coming in thick and fAst in Assetlaw'>Gedling And BAssetlaw and some of them are in Assetlaw'>Gedling And BAssetlaw and some of them are very significant, particularly worksop and all. That wAs the particularly worksop and all. That wAs the long standing Labour Group leader. WAs the long standing Labour Group leader, alan rhodes. He hAs lost that seat leader, alan rhodes. He hAs lost that seat to the conservatives. If labour that seat to the conservatives. If labour were holding out much hope at all of running this council, it would all of running this council, it would have been at the head of some rainbow would have been at the head of some Rainbow Coalition. 0ne would have been at the head of some Rainbow Coalition. One of the things that Rainbow Coalition. 0ne of the things that makes Rainbow Coalition. One of the things that makes nottinghamshire unique, rather that makes nottinghamshire unique, rather than being a scattering of independent candidates across the county, independent candidates across the county, there are two organised groups county, there are two organised groups of county, there are two organised groups of independents, both of which groups of independents, both of which have done well in recent elections which have done well in recent elections. 0ne which have done well in recent elections. One wAs the junior elections. 0ne wAs the Junior Partner elections. One wAs the Junior Partner in elections. One wAs the Junior Partner in the coalition of the lAst four Years Partner in the coalition of the lAst four years. Those independents only needed four years. Those independents only needed to four years. There are contests going on, As we have said to you, City Mayors and City Regions. When i talk about the liverpool mayor, i mean the liverpool mayor, i mean the liverpool council mayor. This is where we are. Joanne anderson on 38,958. Stephen yip, the founder of a Childrens Charity bAsed in the city in strong second place. Lets go on to the next slide because this will show you the share. This is the reAson we are concentrating on this first round form of words because there is nobody getting 50 . Labour fell short of 50 , so what happens now is, there is a second round because it needs to be a run off between joanne because it needs to be a run off Betweenjoanne Anderson on 39 and Stephen Yip on 22 . That will happen and we will get the result is a bit later on. If we see the change on the first round share change. Labour down 14, so adept in support for joanne anderson. And the independent is up by 22 , a very strong performance by somebody with very strong local ties. For the liverpool mayor, not the City Region mayor, the liverpool mayor, they are going into another round because of the failure to get up to 50 . I would like to bring in the Conservative Mp, Diana Davison and talk about the performance so far. Thank you for joining us. It is 2. 55 and there is lots to come and we have seen Boris Johnson In Hartlepool celebrating with your new mp, your new colleague. I would say it is even simpler, the fact that so many areAs across the red wool, hartlepool included, have felt like they have been left behind for far too long by the Labour Party. You add that into brexit, the Labour Party wAs not necessarily reflective of these communities and how the mps were voting on brexit. Seeing the Brexit Process delayed time and time again, alongside Conservative Mps and the mayor is getting elected and delivering on their promises, actually delivering for their local communities As shown a lot of people who perhaps would never have considered Voting Conservative before, blue wAs the one for them. Most results for england, councils, mayors and police and crime commissioners are still to come. In scotland, the first result came in 0rkney after the removal of an intruder. An expected hold for the lib dems. Five holes for the snp, which hopes to secure a majority in the scottish parliament. Both those who are pro independence those against keeping a close eye on the ballots. The first result for the seneddin ballots. The first result for the senedd in wales, also a hold for the conservatives in montgomeryshire. But it is labour that hope to continue their run in power here. But this is extraordinary, so dramatic, the Snp Share of the vote down by 10 in the conservatives up by 11 . This is thought to be the most Leave Voting area of scotland. Is that part of the reAson for this particular pattern . Possibly. That is a 10 swing from snp to conservative. I want to show you one other result from scotland because this is an outlier in a way. Possibly more typical is Perthshire North. In terms of the pattern of the results, where the Snpsjohn Swinney hAs held Perthshire North with a majority of 4000. Have a look and see what hAs happened to the vote here. Snp up a little bit, conservatives up a little Bit And Labour down by a little bit. That mixed bag we are seeing in scotland at the moment. They include essex, where you can see they are still in the middle of counting. We can turn you tell you it is a conservative hold and hAs been conservative for most of its history. Lets look at the sea change, the conservatives have lost five seats here in this election. And if i also show you the share of the vote, that is the share of the vote at the moment but the change in the share is the conservatives down a little bit two Percentage Points and the independents have gone ahead with eight Percentage Point. We were talking about the two sets of elections going on in the English Councils, some which were fought in 2016, some which were fought in 2017 and we did think the 2017 councils, like essex, we might see the conservatives slipping back a little bit and that does seem to be the cAse here. It is a mixed bag, because lets Take A Look at leicestershire, so another County Council. Again, fought in 2017. They are still counting, but similar to essex. We know it is a conservative hold. This wAs gain from no overall control by the conservative 20 years ago. I will talk you through the figures again, so the conservatives have gained four seats, to the detriment of the lib dems and labour. That is the share of the vote for the conservatives, so well over half of the vote hAs gone tory. But they havent actually advanced in leicester, they havent counted the seats but it could be that it changes, but it is that sort of pattern, the 2017 councils not seeing the tory advances. The tory vote hAs dropped but the green vote hAs gone up. I will show you one or two more on the list. Just to help you read this, the councils that are in pale pink, they are still counting and not yet declared. You can see the previous council here wAs conservative and here wAs labour. If we Take A Look at kent, for example. They have got some way to go, only 28 out of the 81 seats have been declared. Conservatives on 22 and labour on four. But the conservatives have lost a couple of seats there and labour have gained three, the greens one. That is the share of the vote and that is the change again, interesting to see it is labour and the greens putting in a healthy performance in kent. This is a work in progress and is once we have a more full declaration, we will bring it to you. Have a more full declaration, we will bring it to you. Thank you very much, will bring it to you. In december and january, people were feeling negative, not very optimistic about the economy, their future or the governments performance. But with things like the Vaccine Programme kicking in very much at tace and the government Reopening Society again, we have seen a real Turning Point in public opinion over the lAst four weeks. What we are seeing playing out in the local elections at this point, is a mix of the short term, in the moment public mood, which is really on the up, both about general optimism, but also government confidence, performance, very heavily linked to brexit and the Vaccine Programme. But this longer term trend, which matthew will probably talk about, which pushes on the cultural values divide in society and particularly in the red wall seat, which we have seen a decline over time with the clAss values dividing that is much more aware labour originally had their heartlands. Just a friendly message to my compatriots in wales where they are in charge of these counts, you are letting me down badly, Withjust One result out of 60 in so far. I hope you can step on the gAs a bit and give us a few more results. In the meantime i am getting some very good intelligence from my sources in different parties in wales and it is an interesting picture. Labour telling me they are very confident in llanelli, which hAs been very, very marginal seat between Labour And Plaid cymru. It hAs been a real battle between these two but labour telling me they feel very confident there. As they do, according to one of my other sources, in the rhondda. That wAs taken by Leanne Wood from Plaid Cymru lAst time. Will they reverse that . It is an intriguing prospect. The vale of glamorgan, we mentioned it earlier in south wales near cardiff, where labours jayne hat hAs been hanging on against the conservative challenge. My conservative challenge. My conservative sources telling me they are not altogether confident, but that could change. And carefully, at this point causing some concerns for labour. And that is another of the seats where Plaid Cymru and conservatives have been challenging labour. Bridgend, that is an interesting seat, not leAst because it is my birthplace, but it is interesting because it wAs the seat by carwyn jones, interesting because it wAs the seat by carwynjones, the former First Minister wAs there for many years and dominated the seat. It is a big labour seat. A high turnout they are telling me in a gent and they think bridgend is looking ok for labour, As opposed to the lAst election when it wAs taken by the conservatives. Lets talk a little bit about rhondda because Leanne Wood took that for Plaid Cymru in 2016. She wAs the leader of Plaid Cymru at that time, she had greater Recognition Factor and she took it from labour and there wAs quite a shock when the heavyweight leighton andrews wAs defeated. We have heard that Leanne Wood hAs left the count sometime ago. Were also hearing from others within Plaid Cymru that are not looking good for them in rhondda. So that is something that obviously we will want to keep a close eye on. Having said that, As you were saying, counting, it is not actually started properly in some of the seats in wales. It hAs been held by labour since devolution, alan jones announced earlier this year she wAs standing down. JAson mclellan is a candidate for welsh labour who will hope to succeed and Gareth Davies for welsh tories. If we go back to 2016, only 768 is the difference in the votes for labour over the tories, and even closer in previous years. Worth noticing the importance of this constituency for both parties, with the Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour Leader, they were both here in this constituency only this week. As you say, it is a solidly labour constituency, Kier Hardie wAs the mp here quite some time ago. But how interesting is the swing towards labour . We were hearing a moment ago about the seat with a contest is between labour and the conservatives. Here it wAs Plaid Cymru, it wAs always going to be a long shot but they were hoping to make some advance. Lets look at what hAs happened to the vote share. The Labour Party hAs put on 14 in terms of its share of the vote, Plaid Cymru hAs lost a little bit and the Ukip Vote, which wAs very big lAst time around, hAs been redistributed. It looks As if that is to the benefit of labour. Lets Take A Look at the swing. As a swing of 7. 4 from Plaid Cymru to the Labour Party. An interesting result, a good result for labour. And one wonders if you can read across a little because we were hearing earlier about the ronde, where the sitting Plaid Cymru, the Plaid Cymrus Leanne Wood wAs thought to be endangered because of an advance by labour. We dont yet have the result they are but given this, it will be interesting to see if that same pattern is replicated. As soon As we know more we will bring that to you. As we know more we will bring that to ou. ,. , , to you. You might have mentioned it. Turn to you. You might have mentioned it turn out to you. You might have mentioned it. Turn out less to you. Turn out less than 35 in merthyr tydfil. And the turnout for elections in wales is significantly lower than General Elections, but 35 is pretty low. And that is down on lAst time. The other thing. Show this very clearly in your graft with the changes. The Assumption is that in so many areAs, the Ukip Vote, because we have seen it so many times in england, goes back to a kind of conservative home but here we have Labour Voters, who are brexit supporters and they certainly voted for brexit, who are returning to labour, it seems. SirJohn Curtice are saying about mertherydfil. He sirJohn Curtice are saying about merthyr tydfil. He says that it is a very encouraging result for labour, whose vote is up by 14 points. In what wAs already a relatively safe labour constituency. The outcome heavily affected by the collapse of ukip, As we saw, down by 19 points. But this is a vote which wAs expected to swing to the conservatives rather than labour. There you go, that is a good point of debate. It remains to be seen whether this pattern is replicated in the welsh red wall seats in the Ast'>North EAst. Wrexham, the vale of clwd, all the rest of it. But we were discussing a short while ago. It is pretty confusing in liverpool, because there are three who have liverpool in the title. The Metro Mayor of the liverpool City Region, the Lord Mayor of liverpool and then the Lord Mayor of liverpool and then the mayor of the city of liverpool and that is the election taking place today. It hAs been a tumultuous few months in liverpool with the previous mayor, joe anderson, standing down following his arrest on conspiracy to commit Bribery And Witness intimidation. No one hAs been charged in connection of that and he denies any wrongdoing, but he wAs unable to stand As Labours Candidate in this election. Yes, the independent candidate, Stephen Yip, up 22 . Head of a charity, relatively unknown but on the second preference, could we have an independent city of liverpool mayor . It would be an amazing story if that wAs the cAse. People here are telling me they think it is unlikely that will happen. Because with second preferences, lots of people on the ground in liverpool saying they think the green Party Candidate, Tom Crone will have picked up a huge amount of second preferences. I think Stephen Yip would have needed 70 of second round second preference votes to beatjoanne anderson in this contest. But liverpool hAs been labour dominated for a decade so even the shocked to the cistern of not winning outright in the first round will be a shock for a local party that is still reeling from a Government Inspection that found Aspects of the councils operations dysfunctional and will see commissioners sent from whitehall to set alongside the new mayor in the Cunard Building where the council sits in a few weeks, to oversee departments like highways and planning, regeneration. So even if joanne anderson, the Labour Candidate goes on to win and most people expect that she will, this initial shock to the system i think well have several labour members, councillors in the city quite concerned. Councillors in the city quite concerned. ~ i , i concerned. Thank you very much indeed. Some more bad news for the Labour Party, this time in sheffield. Lets look at the figures. They have lost control of sheffield council. We are talking about 41 seats to labour, 29 to the lib dems and 13 to the greens. What we are seeing is a lib dems and green attack on labour. Lets look at the change. Labour is still the biggest party but they have gone down eight seats. The greens are up five. Lets go to the veil of fluid declaration. Welsh she speaks welsh i nicola stubbins, constituency returning officer for the vale of fluid constituency, declared that the total number of votes given to each candidate wAs followed. Peter christopher dane, reform uk, 552. Gareth lloyd davies, welsh conservative Party Candidate 10,792. Lisa jane davies, a welsh Liberal Democrats put recovery first. She speaks welsh. 782. JAson matthew mcclellan, welsh labour. 10,426. Cheering and applause. Studio very narrow win for the conservatives. Glenn swingler, Plaid Cymru, 2972. Applause. ThomAs david lee, independent. 529. Applause. I give public notice that gareth lloyd davies. She speaks welsh. Duly elected As the member of the senate for the vale of fluid constituency. Studio so there we have it, the announcement in denbigh. It is Gareth Davies, a conservative who hAs been elected with a majority of 366, very close fought battle and there wAs a that with Ason-mclellan'>JAson Mclellan there wAs a that with Ason-mclellan'>JAson Mclellan the labour on 10,426. Plaid Cymru Way behind with the lib dems. That is significant because of the General Election in 2019, that seat went to the conservatives at the same hAs happened again. This seat hAs been in labour hands since 1999 when the then Assembly wAs created. Here we have it, albeit very tightly fought race, but we have the conservatives making very strong inroads to that very labour territory in Ast'>North EAst wales. So bad news for labour and bad news in sheffield As i wAs about to tell you earlier, where they have lost control to the council to know overall control. What i would like to do is bring in bridget philipsen, shadow treAsury secretary, Labour Mp in sunderland. Thank you for coming in sunderland. Thank you for coming in tojoin us. Disappointing news for you in sheffield, but i imagine even more disappointing in Ast'>North EAst wales, an area where you have been so strong in the pAst to lose out narrowly to the conservatives. We have started the process of change under Keir Starmer s leadership. We have got a long way to go in winning back trust. We have to increAse the pace and the scale of that change in order to earn that back. We did suffer a devAstating result in 2019 and it will take time to earn it back. I will not make excuses, i am focused on making sure we get the Labour Party back into a strong position once again so we speak for the whole country and we can start the whole country and we can start the process of earning Voters Trust once more. The process of earning Voters Trust once more the process of earning Voters Trust once more. . ,. , , once more. Bear with us, i am going to show the once more. High scottish parliament. A swing to the snp of 2. 8 . High turnout of 68. 9 and that is a significant rise from lAst time, a majority of 1179. 39 to the snp on 37 to labour. There we have the snp going up and labour down one Percentage Point and the tories down three. So a swing from the Labour Party to the snp. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but thatis to be the bearer of bad news, but that is yet another element in scotland and we have mentioned the wealth result, English Result in sheffield and now a scottish result, do you detect a theme here, other than the party needs to change even more . If it does change, what are the precise visible things we will see if the party changes . It is see if the party changes . It is bitterl see if the party changes . It 3 bitterly disappointing and i cannot see the results on my screen, sadly but it sounds like quite a close result, but disappointing all the same. Right across the uk until steps up and down the country, and what i have heard from voters, the anger in 2019 hAs gone. I am not being chAsed away from doors like i wAs back then, the palpable anger people felt that the Labour Party, is not there in the same way. But thatis is not there in the same way. But that is not the same As having persuaded people to vote for us once more and having earned back their trust. We have a long, difficult journey ahead of us and it hAs to focus on how we build a better britain and for the future of our country. The Labour Party succeeds and wins elections when we have a hopeful and optimistic vision of the kind of country we want to build. To me, that make sure that every child in every part of our country hAs the opportunity to get on in life, have good secure and decent and well paid jobs and that is the kind of areAs we will be talking about. There is a sense people are willing to talk to us now, they are much warmer on the doorsteps than they were. We have a long journey ahead in winning back trust, the beach we had in 2019. We have Lost Four General elections on the bounce. We havent won a General Election since 2005. We have to be rooted in peoples lives and hopes and Aspirations. Whether it is your own home, your children having a better life than you enjoyed, i think all of that is labour having a hopeful vision about the kind of britain we can build. It also being proud and confident about the country, it is a great country and a great place to live but i think we can be better still. It is the government that gives people better opportunities, Control And Choice in our own lives that all too often are not there. The conservatives have persuaded people to stick with them through this time. We have a job ahead of us. I am confident that Keir Starmer recognises the challenges we face and he is committed to fixing them. If t challenges we face and he is committed to fixing them. We have got to change As a party, we have got to change As a party, we have got to change As a party, we have got to be different. We dont have a right to these votes, none of us own working clAss votes in places like sunderland. We have got to earn the trust and earn the right to be heard and to win back those votes once again. I dont doubt that for one moment. There wAs heavy briefing against anneliese dodds at the moment and talk that Keir Starmer will reshuffle the cabinet and move your boss. Would that we a mistake . I boss. Would that we a mistake . I think she is doing a brilliantjob As Shadow Chancellor and would be a fantAstic chancellor and these are decisions for the leader but i think the problems in the party run deeper. We have lost four elections on the bounce, there are problems in connecting with voters and making sure we are in touch with their concerns. That is where the real challenge lies for the party. And on that stunning result in west lothian, it wAs number six on the Snp Target and they have done it . The first big result of the scottish election, that seat had been labour in the scottish parliament since it wAs created, back in 1999. It is one that labour were fairly confident earlier in the week of holding on to. We have spoken all afternoon about the Snp Turnout versus Tactical Voting in this summer where the snp have shown that if they get their vote out they can win in places they have not before. Lain places they have not before. Iain gra , places they have not before. Iain gray. Also places they have not before. Iain gray, also. That places they have not before. Iain gray, also. But some in the constituency were not impressed. But the system used here means that is not necessarily an net gain for the snp. That will hit them on the list. They have three msps at the moment in the south and this knocks them down to just two. It is a big result because it shows of the snp get out the vote they can win where they have not won before, even though they have been in government for 14 years but at the moment it does not necessarily mean they are up to the 64 mark. A huge majority on the first round, straight through, 73 to just 27 . To see what he hAs done since becoming mayor lAst time. The change. You dont need to say much. Up by 33 on the lAst election. And 12 down for labour. And this is the man who hAs been credited by his supporters with injecting a lot of energy and getting investment in from government and all the rest of it. So that from the conservative point of view is a mAssive Success Story and a swing from labour to the conservatives of 23 . So, the Tees Valley mayor, that is almost off the scale. Ben houchen is re elected As the Tees Valley mayor. We were hearing from Keir Starmer so lets bring in a Laura Kuenssberg At Westminster. What did you make of his message and the kind of way in which he repeatedly said that no option for him wAs off the table . In option for him wAs off the table . T t terms of the atmospherics of the interview, this is obviously a difficult moment for him, i dont think he wAs hiding that in any shape orform. He is somebody normally very composed, he is known for his credibility and having a calm demeanour. I think in that interview we could see that these results have notjust been a disappointment but have seemed to be quite a frustration for him. He said repeatedly that nothing wAs off the table and the party hAs to be bolder and stronger and they have to concentrate less on their internal wranglings and talk to the public more. But when it came to any concrete steps, whether it wAs reshuffling his top team in the next few days, what kind of ideAs he might be setting out to try to cut through, to get across to people what he believes in, he wAs not in the Mood Today to answer any of that. Whether he likes it or not, he might at this stage might not be ready to set anything out but plenty of people in the Labour Movement already have. Whether that is len mccluskey, the leader of the unite union, or on the other side, one of the older generals, lord mandelson, and might be the cAse that Keir Starmer hAs to shout quite loudly to get over the debate that is already raging and one of his allies said today that this is the moment where he is going to have to take the party by the scruff of the neck. At this stage, we dont really know how he is going to set about doing that. Although As we discussed, it is pretty likely there will be a Labour Reshuffle in the next few days, even though he did not really want to confirm that. Tit t though he did not really want to confirm that. Though he did not really want to confirm that. ,. , i confirm that. If i go away suddenly it is because confirm that. If i go away suddenly it is because we confirm that. If i go away suddenly it is because we are confirm that. If i go away suddenly it is because we are getting confirm that. If i go away suddenly it is because we are getting a it is because we are getting a declaration from glAsgow south side, which is where Nicola Sturgeon and As-sarwar'>AnAs Sarwar are doing battle. I As-sarwar'>AnAs Sarwar are doing battle. I think it is there. I As-sarwar'>AnAs Sarwar are doing battle. I think it is there. I hereby give notice that the total number of votes for each candidate wAs As follows two ca rolann votes for each candidate wAs As follows two carolann dobson, an alliance, integrity society, economy, 204. Greg, energy adviser, 147. Carol louise for. Scottish Liberal Democrats. 504. Jayda fransen, independent, 46. Dick jackson, the liberal party, 102. AnAs sarwar, scottish Labour Party in scottish cooperative party, 10,279. Nicola sturgeon, Scottish National Party, snp, 19,735. Kyle thorton, scottish conservative and unionist party, 1719. And i declare that Nicola Sturgeon is elected to serve in the scottish parliament As the memberfor the serve in the scottish parliament As the member for the glAsgow south side constituency. We can look at this would in some detail but the main thing to say is that Nicola Sturgeon is safely returned. That Nicola Sturgeon is safely returned. That Nicola Sturgeon is safely returned. ~ i , returned. Thank you, returning officer, returned. Thank you, returning officer. And returned. Thank you, returning officer, and everyone returned. Thank you, returning officer, and everyone who returned. Thank you, returning officer, and everyone who hAs i returned. Thank you, returning officer, and everyone who hAs worked so hard yesterday to ensure the smooth running of the Election And Everybody who hAs and continues to work very hard here in glAsgow to ensure the smooth administration of the county. That is always a big job, always a tough and difficult job. But this is an election that, just like every other Aspect of our lives over this pAst year, hAs been conducted in the most challenging and difficult of circumstances. So my thanks to everyone involved from the bottom of my heart here in Asgow-and-right'>GlAsgow And Right around the country. Let me also took the opportunity to thank my magnificent Campaign Team. I cannot find words adequate to express my gratitude to my election agent, again, murray hunter, and to all of my team, who have worked tirelessly. It is a challenge for any Campaign Team when your candidate is also the Party Leader and hAs to spend a significant amount of time in other constituencies. But this team that i am privileged to work with always hAs my back, always works incredibly hard for me. I love you all and thank you again for everything you do for me and for the snp. Let me also thank my opponents in this election, particularly As-sarwar'>AnAs Sarwar, we are opponents but i think we are in a strange position in politics of, i think i can speakfor him, he might correct me, we actually like each other that can make it difficult to campaign against someone. But i congratulate him on his campaign. And thanks, above all else, to the voters of glAsgow south side, it is the privilege of my life to represent most multicultural, diverse constituency in the whole of scotland. And yesterday, not for the first time, the constituency wAs targeted by far right thugs. The far right thug who led that confrontation got 46 votes. And i am proud that once again glAsgow south side hAs shown the racists and fAscists they are not welcome in glAsgow south side, they are not welcome in glAsgow or anywhere in scotland. Let that we an note of unity. To my constituents, you do me a great honour in re electing me to represent you. I give the Commitment Today that i have given on each occAsion that i have been privileged to represent the constituency. Whether You Voted for me or one of my opponents, i will do everything to represent you to the best of my ability. Looking beyond glAsgow south side to scotland As a whole, we are in the very, very early stages of a marathon counting operation that will run until probably tomorrow evening. There is lots of votes, lots of constituencies yet to count before we know the final outcome of this election. But at this stage i am extremely happy that the snp appears to be on course for a fourth consecutive Election Victory and to be on course to have the privilege of forming a government again. And if that is indeed the outcome of this election, i pledge today to get back to work immediately to continue to steer this country through the crisis of covid 19, lead this country into a recovery from covic. When the time is right to offer this country a better future. When the time is right to offer this country a betterfuture. My when the time is right to offer this country a better future. My thanks again to everyone who is working so hard to deliver these Election Outcomes. I hard to deliver these Election Outcomes hard to deliver these Election Outcomes. ,. , , , outcomes. I think we are going to hear from outcomes. I think we are going to hear from anna outcomes. I think we are going to hear from anna sarwar, outcomes. I think we are going to hear from anna sarwar, who outcomes. I think we are going to i hear from anna sarwar, who Nicola Hearfrom Anna sarwar, who Nicola Sturgeon said she felt some affection for and he hAs added to his vote by 8 at the expense of the conservatives. There is a personal vote in this and then perhaps it is a Tactical Voting because anwar salah can defend The Union. This will take probably the snp anwar sarwar. This will take us to 2026, 19 years of Snp Power in scotland. That is one for the history books. It certainly is, for any party to be leading a government for that length of time is normally suspending political gravity. We are in a strange period in terms of that being the cAse in scotland and the whole of the uk, we are 11 years of conservative rule. She didnt use the word independence, she wAs very clear to say her first the word independence, she wAs very clear to say herfirstjob the word independence, she wAs very clear to say her firstjob is to get on with leading the country out of the pandemic and into recovery and if the time is right, offering the people a choice of what she would describe As a better future. It is a bit like the way she hAs campaign, almost trying to not mention the possibility of an Independence Referendum. But she wAs also careful to remind people and remind the viewers, it is a long way to go. You have been talking so much this afternoon about the clues As to just how far down the line the snp will get towards what they will see As the magic mandate. There hAs been a question through this campaign of her returning As First Minister. The question is, with what level of support behind her. We question is, with what level of support behind her. Question is, with what level of support behind her. We are starting to see that a support behind her. We are starting to see that a Bit Support behind her. We are starting to see that a bit more support behind her. We are starting to see that a bit more clearly. Support behind her. We are starting to see that a bit more clearly. But i to see that a bit more clearly. But coming out of the pandemic and going into the recovery, she still remains into the recovery, she still remains in charge of that. If there is a couple of other big beAsts that come into the scottish parliament, like Angus Robertson in edinburgh central, they will leave her to the job of recovery and bringing back the country to some kind of economic stability. The country to some kind of economic stabili. Stability. Even in The End if the makeop stability. Even in The End if the makeop of stability. Even in The End if the makeup of the stability. Even in The End if the makeup of the might stability. Even in The End if the makeup of the might not stability. Even in The End if the makeup of the might not be i stability. Even in The End if the I Makeup of the might not be that make up of the might not be that different, and it is early stages, evenif different, and it is early stages, even if the ultimate numbers dont look that different to the lAst set of results, the complexion of the parliament will change, the characters will still change. We see the new Labour Leader, As-sarwar'>AnAs Sarwar, nowhere near taking away Nicola Sturgeons majority. But nibbling away, increAsing the Labour Share, a new voice in holyrood, and equally some snp big beAsts probably back in the parliament. Alex salmonds breakaway party, the Alba Party, which believes in the cause of independence. What will his role be if he manages to make any inroads . There is an interesting parallel with what we now see happening in england, in a sense. The Snp Dominance you are reminding us of in scotland hAs been total for dominance you are reminding us of in scotland hAs been totalfor such dominance you are reminding us of in scotland hAs been total for such a long time. A lot of people would suggest that came to pAss because labour wAs complacent and they relied on their vote for too long, didnt knock on doors and took voters for granted and it rotted away. There are some parallels perhaps a decade or so behind with what we now see happening in parts of england where labour, perhaps took this vote for granted and conservative candidates like in that Astounding win for Ben Houchen in teesside, saw the opportunity, built an organisation on the ground and are now reaping rewards in very big ways. Lets help the viewers, in your words, for those viewers who are not familiar with what you have done, not familiar with the Tees Valley and the debate around mairs and all the rest of it, what hAs led to this today . To this today . Years and years of ne. Lect. To this today . Years and years of neglect. Places to this today . Years and years of neglect. Places like to this today . Years and years of neglect. Places like teesside, i neglect. Places like teesside, darlington and hartlepool, they have failed to invest in the region and with borisjohnson we have seen huge investment. We have seen the largest free thought established, the airport saved and doing fantAstically well. We are investing in public infrAstructure and public transport. People are seeing tangible benefits on the ground and the thing that hAs returned us today is teesside is delivering on the levelling up agenda. We are delivering a lot of it ourselves and having the support of a government that believes in levelling up makes it eAsier to help the people of teesside and darlington. There is still a long way to go, it is an area that hAs been neglected for a long time, but the pieces we have put in place, the treAsury, the free thought and the public infrAstructure, these things are moving in the right direction and they will create opportunities and jobs in a region that needs and deserves them. People are on board with that and they realise it will take many, many years to continue to turnit take many, many years to continue to turn it around the people wantjobs, opportunities and they want to be proud of where they live. The Tees Valley is a fantAstic place to live and have a career and we need to be more proud of that. Historically, lots of commentators have looked at the Ast'>North EAst and places like teesside As some sort of post industrial wAsteland. It is a fantAstic place full of working families and a wonderful place to be. Pride is returning and starting to deliver results is part of it, but there is still a long way to go. You know what your opponent say, at leAst some of them, they say you are a conservative mayor who hAs been showered with cAsh by a conservative government. If you are not a conservative mayor, that wouldnt have happened and that is not the right way to manage Government And Government finances, what is your answer to that . Dont buy into this what is a bizarre argument, this conservative government stood on a mandate of levelling up. We said if You Vote for us we will level a part of the country that have been neglected for a long time. They elected tory mps for the first time in redcar, fantAstic result lAst night In Hartlepool. I want to focus on a national recovery and my plea to all political parties, they said during this campaign they would focus on the next parliament, particularly the next parliament, particularly the start of this next parliament on the start of this next parliament on the national recovery, lets start that now and immediately. It is important to say where we were ten weeks ago when i took over, and where we are now is an incredible transformation and that is down to the hard work of people across the country. They can see there is a new Asm'>Energy And EnthusiAsm around the Labour Party. I am not pretending that process is complete. I what i would say is that there are lessons the uk Labour Party can learn from the scottish Labour Party about what happened to us after a big, constitutional, binary choice on the challenges we face. What i am doing and what keir is doing is taking the party on a journey. I want to do it with energy, optimism, honesty and also with humility and authenticity. I think if we do that, we can
