Were at holyrood in edinburgh on the finaNews/l-day'>L Day of campaigning in a series of elections across News/great-britain'>Great Britain. Only northern News/ireland-wont'>Ireland Wont be going to the polls. The News/voting-tomorrow'>Voting Tomorrow represents the biggest set of local and national elections in almost half a century. Political parties here in scotland are making their final push ahead of elections to the holyrood parliament. Voters will elect 129 msps, with the campaigning this year looking a little different. And News/polling-day'>Polling Day and the count will also be unusual, as News/lorna-gordon'>Lorna Gordon explains. Getting ready for tomorrows vote, constructing booths, cleaning surfaces. Pandemic procedures mean News/polling-station'>Polling Stations like this one in glasgow will be a little different this time round. There will be screens to protect staff and voters. That will have to go at the front. Familiar one way systems and the number of people in a News/polling-station'>Polling Station at any one time will be limited. Outside the News/polling-station'>Polling Stations we will also have marshals, who will welcome voters to the News/polling-station'>Polling Station. We do expect that there will be an element of queueing required. That is something we have got used to over the last year, going to superNews/mark-'>Markets and the like, so they will have to ensure that physical distancing is maintained throughout that whole period of the polNews/l-day'>L Day, from seven in the morning till 10. 00 at night. In glasgow alone, 250,000 single use pencils have been bought to reduce the risk of infection, and for those who are having to self isolate, their part in the democratic process is assured. Youll still be able to vote, youll be able to apply for whats known as an emergency proxy. If you have to self isolate because of covid reasons, even on News/polling-day'>Polling Day you can apply for one up to 5pm on News/polling-day'>Polling Day, and you appoint someone to vote on your behalf. That is common to england, wales and scotland. Counting News/wont-start'>Wont Start till 9. 00 on friday morning. Ballot boxes will be disinfected and then guarded overnight. And that wont be the only change. The counts will look and feel very different this year. The officials counting the News/ballot-papers'>Ballot Papers are much more spread out, and instead of seeing a huddle of party agents looking over their shoulders, seeing which way the vote is going, they all have to keep their distance, and their numbers are vastly reduced. The hubble and bubble of the count centre, with politicians talking to News/each-other'>Each Other and masses of people, that wont happen. Because we have to spread people out, we are using largely the same buildings, it means you can have fewer people in the building, so that includes counting staff, so that is one of, that is the real reason why it is going to take longer than normal. It will be saturday before the final result in scotland becomes clear. The new intake here will have their work cut out, though with News/covid-recovery'>Covid Recovery and the question of another News/referendum-on-scottish-independence'>Referendum On Scottish Independence dominating the debate. Lorna gordon, News/bbc-News'>Bbc News. 0ur political News/correspondent-nick-eardley'>Correspondent Nick Eardley is with me now. Lots of talk about the snp at the top of the News/pecking-order'>Pecking Order i suppose in terms of the number of seats that could be won here at holyrood. Lets talk about second place, the conservatives and labour vying for that sport. The conservatives did pretty well last time around and are seen as the opposition to the snp. Labour have a new leader, how has he cut through and have both parties, pro union, been able to push their policies beyond the independence static, as it were, have they been able to cut through to the electorate with their ideas . I think the News/conservatives-electorate'>Conservatives Electorate with their ideas . I think the conservatives are electorate with their ideas . I think the conservatives are pretty the conservatives are pretty confident at the moment that they will maintain that second place behind the snp is the largest opposition party. And anas sarwar, the new scottish News/labour-leader'>Labour Leader, does seem to be quite popular, if you believe the polls. The nervousness in the News/labour-party'>Labour Party is that that is not translating into votes for them, they are still trying to figure out how to win back the swathes of voters that they used to have across scotland before the News/independence-referendum'>Independence Referendum, and going back over 50 years or so. In terms of whether the message is cutting through, that idea that an News/independence-referendum'>Independence Referendum would be a distraction, when youre trying to recover from the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic, i do think that that is having some impact. All the parties are out today making their final pitches, all of them are talking about the recovery. Nicola sturgeon was focusing on the recovery, she is not focusing on the recovery, she is not focusing on the recovery, she is not focusing on independence today, she wants to talk about how shes been the boss for the last years, she has got scotland through to this stage, she wants to continue that job, trust her, keep going. But as we have been discussing over the last couple of days, it does always come back to independence, because independence frames how that debate happens over the next few years, the powers of independence, to properly recover, would it be a distraction and take you on a tangent when all you should be thinking about is the economic recovery . That is why so many News/people-today'>People Today are crunching the numbers, trying to figure out if the snp are going to get a majority. Its too close to call at the moment, it is going to come down to some key seats. I5 moment, it is going to come down to some key seate some key seats. Is that why the snp are News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon some key seats. Is that why the snp are News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon are some key seats. Is that why the snp are News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon are keen some key seats. Is that why the snp are News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon are keen to some key seats. Is that why the snp are News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon are keen to say, j are News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon are keen to say, yes, we are campaigning for a clear majority, so that we have the mandate to push for a News/independence-referendum'>Independence Referendum again, but we are not going to call for that straightaway, we are going to give it a couple of years, and sort out the News/coronavirus-News/pandemic-'>Pandemic'>Coronavirus Pandemic, is that why she is keen to stress that . And if she is, what if there are other parties who are News/pro-independence'>Pro Independence in the parliament, the greens and particularly perhaps, if they manage to do well enough, the alba party, under News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond, what if they put forward a motion saying that independence has got to come now . It that independence has got to come now . ,. ,. , that independence has got to come now . ,. , now . It is a great question because we are in the now . It is a great question because we are in the strange now . It is a great question because we are in the strange position now . It is a great question because we are in the strange position of. We are in the strange position of not talking about independence that much, but News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond popping up every few days and making some comments that make it hard for her not to talk about independence. If allah by get in, they will try and push the independence question. I think the scottish greens and the snp are in a pretty similar place, get through the News/health-emergency'>Health Emergency, and then start talking about an News/independence-referendum'>Independence Referendum. It is also interesting, the leaders who were up here News/last-night'>Last Night, News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon does not have a full case for independence at the moment. She says the ideology is there but she also admits that it will take, she will come up with the full prospectus closer to the time of any other referendum. So, there is clearly a bit of work that still needs to be done on figuring out some of the questions that arise after the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic and after brexit, all you need to do is look at the border between News/northern-ireland'>Northern Ireland and News/great-britain'>Great Britain and some of the issues that have been there to see, where potential trouble might come up. Nicola sturgeon has admitted there will have to be some things that she works through. So, she is focusing on the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic, i suspect if she remains News/first-minister'>First Minister, she will make quite a public play of going back to work on monday, to make some of the big decisions which are due to be announced next week in scotland. But we also need to be clear that the snp will take a majority in that parliament, as a mandate for another referendum. So, there is a lot at stake here, there is a lot at play, it is a complicated election, the News/electoral-system'>Electoral System is complicated, and if anyone tells you they know what the result is going to be, dont believe them. That includes you especially no News/nick-eardley'>Nick Eardley there. Politicians are campaigning across wales in key seats today. 60 members of the senedd will be chosen at the News/polls-tomorrow'>Polls Tomorrow and our News/wales-correspondent'>Wales Correspondent News/tomos-morgan'>Tomos Morgan is in News/cardiff-bay'>Cardiff Bay for us. Tomos, i wonder how likely it is that the conservative gains made in 2019, particularly in the north of the country, how they could have turned into senedd seats and potentially taking some labour held territory . I potentially taking some News/labourheld-territo'>Labourheld Territo . ~ ,. , territory . I think youre right there, i think territory . I think youre right there, i think that territory . I think youre right there, i think that is territory . I think youre right. There, i think that is definitely there, i think that is definitely the area that labour has got most concern, the area that the tories feel they have got most to gain. When you look at the two parties it is interesting how they have approached this election. 0n the one hand welsh labour, News/mark-'>Mark drakeford, who has been the News/first-minister'>First Minister throughout the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic, his recognition and the recognition of the News/first-minister'>First Minister, has never been higher in wales. Will that work for him or against higher in wales. Will that work for him oragainst him . Higher in wales. Will that work for him or against him . Welsh labour clearly think it will work for him, he has been front and centre of their campaign. But conversely on their campaign. But conversely on the tories side, they have been using more News/uk-ministers'>Uk Ministers for their campaign, borisjohnson has been to the News/north-east'>North East of wales, and today News/rishi-sunak'>Rishi Sunak has been in the News/north-east'>North East of wales, that belt, five or six labour seats, hoping to overturn them, the tories. So really i think the story in wales will be labour obviously being in power here since the senedd first started, doesnt look like they will have the same number of seats, according to the polls is five years ago, potentially losing a couple of seats, i suppose, potentially losing a couple of seats, isuppose, how potentially losing a couple of seats, i suppose, how many, potentially losing a couple of seats, isuppose, how many, and if they lose News/constituency-seats'>Constituency Seats, can they lose News/constituency-seats'>Constituency Seats, can they pick up in the regional vote . Talking about News/plaid-cymru'>Plaid Cymru as well, they will be battling hard for second place with the tory party, looking to take areas like llanelli, but looking to hold on to areas like the rhondda, where labour have been trying hard, News/leanne-wood'>Leanne Wood standing there. And the News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats, they have one seat, in brecon and radnorshire, News/fighting-hole'>Fighting Hole to hold onto that, they were wiped out in the News/general-election'>General Election 2019 so they will be hoping that will not happen again on thursday. And they will be challenging in areas like News/cardiff-central'>Cardiff Central here. Held by labour since 2019, ten years ago, not 2019, sorry, ten years ago, 2001, but the three parties will be challenging in different areas here as well. One other sentiment i should mention, abolish the senedd, News/the-party'>The Party, gaining some momentum, they will be looking to get some regional seats, if they can, and it will be interesting to see how that dynamic works, but some pundits suggest that the independent sentiment from News/plaid-cymru'>Plaid Cymru and this abolished sentiment from some of the other parties probably wont resonate enough with the welsh public and really it will come down to who the welsh public think can steer wales through the rest of the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic. Think can steer wales through the rest of the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic. Tomos morgan there at News/cardiff-rest'>Cardiff Rest of the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic. Tomos morgan there at cardiff bake, rest of the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic. Tomos morgan there at cardiff bake, thanks, there at cardiff bake, thanks, tomos. Lets News/take-a-look'>Take A Look now at whats at stake in england, where 4,650 News/council-seats'>Council Seats are being contested across 143 local authorities. 13 directly elected mayors are being selected, including for london, where 25 seats are also up for grabs in the city s assembly. Elsewhere, all eyes will be on hartlepool where theres a parliamentary News/by-election'>By Election to choose a new mp. Voters across england and wales will also have the chance to select a total of 39 new police and crime commissioners. News/0ur-political-correspondent'>0ur Political Correspondent News/helen-catt'>Helen Catt has a News/round-up'>Round Up of a frantic day of campaign visits around england. It is being called super thursday, tomorrow voters in england will choose who is in charge of services like police, social care, recycling and mending the roads. It will be a News/bumper-set'>Bumper Set of elections unlike any other but the pressure on the parties to do well remains the same. Ive got five plus one. There is particular scrutiny on how the numbers add up for labour. Keir starmer at a News/food-bank'>Food Bank in pontefract is bank in pontefract is acing his first public test of opinion as leader. He is under pressure for labour to win in where the tories took seats from them at the News/general-election'>General Election. What we need across the country are labour candidates from their community, of their communities, that are going to stand up against this government, and that is the choice before the country tomorrow. There is also a News/by-election'>By Election to choose a new mp for hartlepool. Labour has represented it since 1974 so anything other than a win would be very difficult for sir keir. For the conservatives, these elections are largely about staying on track. How they perform with voters in places like the midlands and in News/northern-england'>Northern England will be key, as they try to make sure that gains at the News/general-election'>General Election werent a one off. These are a very important set of elections and the choice is clear, between you know, the News/labour-opposition'>Labour Opposition who seem absolutely determined to continue to play political games, and government, that is getting on with our agenda. Who gets elected as councillors, mayors, police and crime commissioners, will have an influence on daily life. But it has a political impact too and it will be watched very closely at westminster. In london, the greens have gained seats in recent local elections and hope to go further. We stood up for those that have no voice, to who have been reflected, we stood up for those that have no voice, those who have been reflected, we have given them a platform and people have appreciated and that and voted green, also in london, the lib dem, also in london, the lib dems, they have struggled to gain in recent elections, and hope their traditional strength in local campaigning will see them advance. We have had a weird News/election-campaign'>Election Campaign because of the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic, and we havent been able to get on the doors as much as we would have liked to, but when we have managed to talk to people, they are responding positively to the message because we are community politicians, people know a liberal democrat councillor, things get done. It is the voters who decide when the polls open tomorrow. Lets get the picture on the contests across News/england-and-talk'>England And Talk to our deputy political editor, vicki young. Good afternoon, vicki. Ijust wonder if the News/elections-tomorrow'>Elections Tomorrow across england are about the conservatives effectively trying to scatter to the four winds the bricks of this fabled News/red-wall'>Red Wall that have been scattered all over the ground since 2019, and labour trying to desperately redirect this News/red-wall'>Red Wall, is that really what were talking about with these elections . I really what were talking about with these elections . These elections . I think there will be an awful these elections . I think there will be an awful lot these elections . I think there will be an awful lot of these elections . I think there will be an awful lot of focus these elections . I think there will be an awful lot of focus on these elections . I think there will be an awful lot of focus on those l be an awful lot of focus on those areas that the conservatives won in 2019 News/general-election'>General Election. There is News/no-doubt'>No Doubt about that. And this will be a matter of whether the conservatives are consolidating that, was itjust are consolidating that, was itjust a blip, was it to do with News/brexit-and-nothing'>Brexit And Nothing else, or are the conservatives really consolidating that or even advancing . And speaking to conservatives who have been out knocking on doors, they do sound pretty upbeat about the general picture, particularly in the north and the midlands. And for labour, of course, it is a matter of whether they are starting to claw back and get into a position where they could begin to think about forming the government at the next election. They have had some terrible News/election-results'>Election Results when it comes to the national picture and under sir News/keir-starmer'>Keir Starmer, who has really made a lot about the News/labour-party'>Labour Party being under new leadership, they want to move away from the News/jeremy-corbyn'>Jeremy Corbyn new leadership, they want to move away from theNews/jeremy-corbyn'>Jeremy Corbyn era, they want to try and put brexit behind them because of course their message, and particularly the message, and particularly the message of sir News/keir-starmer'>Keir Starmer, did not chime in those particular areas, the message of a second referendum. Also of course, the News/by-election'>By Election in hartlepool, a seat that has always been labour since it was formed, the conservatives sounding cautiously optimistic about the possibility of maybe even taking that seat from labour. Now, that would be seen as a pretty disastrous result if were to happen focus for sir News/keir-starmer'>Keir Starmer. But his team are saying that News/the-party'>The Party will not be turned around in just a year, they are already making the case, pleading for more time for him to make his News/mark-'>Mark. Him to make his News/mark-'>Mark. Indeed, what are the prospects him to make his News/mark-'>Mark. Indeed, what are the prospects for him to make his News/mark-'>Mark. Indeed, what are the prospects for the him to make his News/mark-'>Mark. Indeed, what are the prospects for the liberal are the prospects for the News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats and greens . 0f are the prospects for the News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats and greens . Of course, local politics is really where they have a lot of power, compared to at westminster, and where they have a lot of influence. How are the elections are shaping up for them, do you think . I elections are shaping up for them, do you think . Do you think . I think i can for the News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats do you think . I think i can for the News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats it do you think . I think i can for the News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats it is do you think . I think i can for the News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats it is a do you think . I think i can for the News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats it is a News/matter-l'>Matter L do you think . I think i can for the | News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats it is a matter of trying to start. 0ne News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats it is a matter of trying to start. One said to me, ward by News/ward-and-council'>Ward And Council by council, because they are still really in a rebuilding phase. Local government has always been an area where the News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats feel they can do well, they like to build up a local reputation, take control of the council and then they like to translate that if they can into parliamentary seats. That hasnt worked recently but they do feel that there are areas where they hope that there are areas where they hope that they can maybe try to advance a little bit, try to benefit, as the greens would hope to, from maybe people looking at the other two parties and saying, i dont fancy any of those, and the greens also wanting to build up that local reputation first. I think we have to be careful about trying to extrapolate a national picture from this. People vote for alNews/l-sort'>L Sorts of different reasons and some people will be looking very much at what happens in their local area. But there is News/no-doubt'>No Doubt that they national coverage will influence people up to a point. Coverage will influence people up to a oint. , , coverage will influence people up to aoint. , , coverage will influence people up to aoint. , ,. , a point. Deputy political News/editor-vicki'>Editor Vicki young a point. Deputy political News/editor-vicki'>Editor Vicki young there. Donald trump will not be allowed back on facebook after the social media News/giants-oversight-board'>Giants Oversight Board decided to uphold a ban on the former us president imposed earlier this year. The ruling comes after News/donald-trump'>Donald Trump launched his own website. This is the News/home-page'>Home Page of what appears to be a blog. Which the former president has called from the desk of News/donald-trump'>Donald Trump. The website has a series of personal updates and videos. Well, lets News/take-a-look'>Take A Look at the bans on the various News/social-media-platforms'>Social Media Platforms. Facebook and instagram banned News/donald-trump'>Donald Trump from its platforms following the News/capitol-hill'>Capitol Hill riots in january. Twitter s ban of the former president is permanent, with the company taking the action due to risk of further incitement of violence and his News/youtube-channel'>Youtube Channel is also suspended from making any new uploads but the company says it will lift the suspension when we determine that the risk of violence has decreased. Im joined now by our correspondent News/gary-0donoghue'>Gary 0donoghue in washington. What led to that band back in january . And to that degree, facebook was all right to suspend the account of News/donald-trump'>Donald Trump. However they are saying that there is a problem with an indefinite suspension, they dont believe that facebook has demonstrated that the indefinite suspension is somehow in tune with their standards or can be judged by particular standards they have put in place, so they have asked facebook to report back on that within six months. People will be looking closely at this statement because it steers a really careful, narrow course, if i can put it that way. Some will take one thing out of it, some will take another. It is a bit of this and a bit of that. But it does on the face of it at this stage appear to leave open the possibility that at some point in the future, News/donald-trump'>Donald Trump could return to facebook, but certainly not anytime soon. He has been Crisscrossing Scotland throughout campaign, he was in a microlight this morning after the break the debate News/last-night'>Last Night, and that energy is something we are really picking up is something we are really picking up from a campaign perspective. One of the great things about the parliament the proNews/independence-snp'>Independence Snp . One of the great things about the parliament in great things about the parliament in scotland, and we saw that in the past, sadly lesser recently, is the fact there is a variety of parties with different opinions able to stand up, and i suppose the liberal News/democrat-message'>Democrat Message and i stood and was elected on 2019 on a pro uk, pro eu message, is that you donNews/t-need'>T Need to have the News/brexit-story'>Brexit Story with the conservatives, or indeed the independent story of the snp and the greens, that there is a progressive strong pro uk message, and that comes from the News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats. The greens, with similar representation, they have an identity, they are behind the snp, in terms of pushing for an independence vote, there is a sense they are punching above their weight. I think it wont change what the snp do News/referendum-vote'>Referendum Vote or not . I think it wont change what the snp do because it every single election regardless of the result, the claim there is a strong mandate and a movement towards leaving the eu, so really the reaction depends on the reaction from the uk government, and the Opposition Parties in scotland, and i think they would be wise not to become the villains, not to become the antagonist that the snp want them to be, so rather than offering a blanket no to another referendum, they should really try and reframe they should really try and reframe the argument to say that if the snp are saying they are close to holding another referendum, they really have to be better prepared than they have been when the Big Questions about borders or currency or cuts to public services have been asked during this campaign. So while they argue that they have a right, the argument has to be made that there is also a responsibility to set out proper plans, if they are genuinely claiming that they are ready for this referendum. 50 claiming that they are ready for this referendum. Ok, so lets Ust Say that alba did side. Ok, so letsjUst Say that alba did confound side. Ok, so letsjUst Say that| alba did confound expectations side. Would that be affected potentially by News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond is to landing up in saying that, he is in motion, you have to start triggering talks, in order to get another referendum, or could be seen News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon actually being in the position of voting against a motion along those lines if put forward by News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond . I think they would reject a motion News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond . I think they would reject a Motion Put News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond . I think they would reject a Motion Put forward News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond . I think they would reject a Motion Put forward by News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond . I think they would l reject a Motion Put forward by News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond because they realise that News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond is really a gift to people like me. He has become the sort of unattractive face of nationalism. So i think you are as likely to seen News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon defining against those elements within the nationalist movement, as you are feeling pressure, once the campaign is over, she will not feel that pressure is there. So in many ways i think News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond, i think he is viewed by both sides of the argument as a sort of unhelpful presence in the debate, and i think during the election he was a worry for News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon. I think after the election if he is there, he will be an unattractive reminder about the fringes of nationalism, but News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon is in pretty tight control of her party now i think. The government is preparing to give Booster Jabs this autumn, to help fight off another wave of coronavirus. There are reports that people over 50, and those with underlying health conditions, may be offered a third vaccination later on in the year. Meanwhile, the government has also promised almost £30 million, to fast track the development of vaccines, which can deal with new variants of the virus. Our health correspondent Jim Reed reports. It is less than a fortnight until the next major date for unlocking society, in both england and scotland, and all the data is currently pointing in the same positive direction. New figures this morning showed covid deaths falling to their low News/levels-sense'>Levels Sense september. Levels since september. The success of the News/vaccine-roll-out'>Vaccine Roll Out is one major reason for that, the government said its planning for possible Booster Doses of the jab this autumn, the deal with any mutations or variants of the virus that might appear. The News/nhs-team'>Nhs Team is already planning to be ready for deployment, from september on wards, but the News/decision-hasnt'>Decision Hasnt been made until we go september later in the year or early next year, that depends on the clinicians and how they feel the protection has lasted for the most vulnerable groups and of News/course-vaccine-variant'>Course Vaccine Variant or Virus Variants that would be of concern. The work we will do in these facilities will help us assess the effectiveness of vaccines against new variants of the virus. And also provide important information that will help inform the development of new vaccines. There was another News/stark-reminder'>Stark Reminder today. Jim reed, News/bbc-News'>Bbc News. They are known as the rainforests of the News/sea-coral'>Sea Coral reefs that are home to around a quarter of all marine species, and a precious part of our global ecosystem. But they are under growing threat News/over-fishing'>Over Fishing and rising Sea Temperatures mean more and more News/coral-reefs'>Coral Reefs have become grey and lifeless. Now, in indonesia, theres a pioneering initiative to try to restore them as our News/science-editor-david'>Science Editor David shukman reports. Its one of the most shocking sights in the Underwater World when corals die either because theyre damaged or because the sea becomes too hot for them and they turn into what looks like a graveyard. When you dive on a reef and its just quiet and its all monotone grey, its desolate, its so depressing. The solution, pioneered by professor smith, involves whole communities in indonesia. They take these metal frames, called Reef Stars, and fix them to the sea bed. Fragments of live corals are attached to them, and the result is a revival of a habitat that many depend on. You see fish come in, you dive on it one day and you see the small News/fish-sort'>Fish Sort of finding a hole in the Reef Stars amongst the coral. Six months later, medium sized fish the whole ecosystem responds when you give it this chance of kick starting The System. The latest reef to be helped in this way is called hope. The word is spelt out in the new corals and the aim is to apply the same technique in other areas around the world. Over the years, there have been dozens of attempts to try to bring reefs back to life, some more successful than others. And they have all been on a really small scale, as with this latest initiative, so there will be questions about it. It is funded by the News/pet-food-company'>Pet Food Company sheba, which uses a lot of fish in its products, so can this venture really make any kind of difference . Well, scientists ive spoken to are impressed by the way that reefs that were once dead are now being revived, and, because the task is so huge, they welcome funding from big name companies. For businesses involved, dependent on fish and marine resources, to actually invest in restoring the ocean, in recovering depleted reefs, is a good thing. Obviously in business, you always have that extra filter of scrutiny. And because most corals are threatened, as global temperatures continue to rise, any attempt to save even small areas will need real determination. David shukman, News/bbc-News'>Bbc News. Well, that has cheered me up, no end. I dont know about you. I dont know about you. Now its time for a look at the weather, with tomasz. Another day of showers, and as the word suggests, they can be on and off, fleeting, some of them cold, some of them bringing News/hail-and-thunder'>Hail And Thunder as well. Of course where the hail falls, thunder as well. Of course where the hailfalls, its pretty dramatic, but hailstorms tend to be pretty local. They might be a mile across or so, so further down the road there could be nothing at all. This is the pattern on the satellite picture, you can see the Speckled Cloud here, that is the current of Cold Air coming in from the north. These are arctic winds. It is the story of the last few weeks, which is you keep getting these shots of cold from the north, and through the course of today, this current of Cold Air is driving these showers, and if you combine that with strong may sunshine, you get these Big Cumulus Clouds forming, they are pretty deep, pretty tall clouds, and within them all these currents of air form the hailstones. Within them all these currents of airform the hailstones. But within them all these currents of air form the hailstones. But as within them all these currents of airform the hailstones. But as i say, they are very hit and miss and most of us are actually in for a pretty bright day. Now the cold current of air is with us through the course of this evening, and actually what is perhaps a little more unusual is the fact we will see some News/snow-falling'>Snow Falling across the hills and possibly even down to lower levels across parts of scotland through tonight and into tomorrow. You can see temperatures are close to freezing so there could be a little dusting of snow here and there, and some icy patches as well. Now, elsewhere tomorrow, there could be a bit of cloud in some spots of Rain Flirting with the southern counties, but the afternoon is looking much brighter. I think the day tomorrow, the afternoon is pretty good across wales and the News/south-west'>South West of the country, but certainly some northern and eastern areas are in for further showers and again hailand areas are in for further showers and again News/hail-and-thunder'>Hail And Thunder, very hit and miss though, but dramatic weight falls. So here is fridays weather forecast, further showers across some northern and eastern areas of the country, but elsewhere i think it is a pretty decent day. Then towards News/the-end'>The End of the week and into the weekend, we are starting to see a shift in the wind pattern. It starts to blow out the News/south-west'>South West, whether france arrive as well, that spells rain, but also with this rain this subtropical air. So we are going to cut off that current of Cold Air from the arctic and things are going to warm up a little bit, so it will be warm and wet i think for many of us on saturday, and then briefly on sunday warm too. There is also a News/by-election'>By Election to choose a new mp for hartlepool. Labour has represented it since 1974, so anything other than a win would be very difficult for sir keir. Morning, everybody. Morning, morning, morning. For the conservatives, these elections are largely about staying on track. How they perform with voters in places like the midlands and in News/northern-england'>Northern England will be key, as they try to make sure that gains at the News/general-election'>General Election werent a one off. These are a very important set of elections and the choice i think is clear, between, you know, the News/labour-opposition'>Labour Opposition who seem absolutely determined to continue to play political games, and government, that is getting on with our agenda. Who gets elected as councillors, mayors, police and crime commissioners, will have an influence on everyday life. But it has a political impact, too, and these results will be watched very closely at westminster. Out in london, the greens. Theyve gained seats in recent local elections and hope to go further. We stood up for those that have no voice, those who have been neglected by local authorities, weve given them a platform to be heard, and people have appreciated and that and people have voted and people have appreciated that and people have voted green. A whole bunch of second places really isnt going to deliver the change that we need. Also in london, the lib dems. Theyve struggled to gain in recent elections, and hope their traditional strength in local campaigning will see them advance. We have had a weird News/election-campaign'>Election Campaign because of the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic, and we havent been able to get on the doors as much as we would have liked to, but when we have managed to talk to people, theyre responding positively to the liberal News/democrat-message'>Democrat Message, because we are community politicians, people know that if they get a liberal democrat councillor, things get done. Lets jUst Say News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon and the snp dont do as well as News/everyone-'>Everyone thinks they might and they actually dropped a couple of seats, what happens then to this call for a second News/independence-referendum'>Independence Referendum . Its call for a second News/independence-referendum'>Independence Referendum . Referendum . Its a really interesting referendum . Its a really interesting News/question-referendum'>Question Referendum . Its a really interesting question because when referendum . Its a really interesting question because when we have been saying alNews/l-day'>L Day that this could come down to a few seats, it could come down to a few seats, it could go either way, it could be the thing that puts the snp over the 65 News/mark-'>Mark, it could be the thing that takes them down closer to 60. There are some in News/the-party'>The Party who think there is a pretty broad range of where it could end up. I think we need to remember that if the snp, plus other independence parties, have a majority, so, if you add in the greens, perhaps News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmonds alba party, they will still argue that that is a mandate for a referendum. It is not quite as emphatic as an snp majority, but if there is still a pro News/independence-majority'>Independence Majority, dont expect it to go away. If they fall short of a majority, even with the greens, which looks unlikely, then i think the calls for an News/independence-referendum'>Independence Referendum would go pretty quiet for the next few years. There would i suppose be a bit of a question about News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeons campaign, perhaps her future as well. She has News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeons campaign, perhaps herfuture as well. She has promised she will see out the next term as News/first-minister'>First Minister, and she probably will, if News/the-party'>The Party does pretty well. If they did really badly, questions like that will always be ask, what happens to her, how long does she stay in the game . But we are in this really strange place where everybody knows, orthinks really strange place where everybody knows, or thinks they know, including the Opposition Parties, who the biggest party is going to be, and who the News/first-minister'>First Minister is going to be, but we still have the Big Question about what it actually looks like and what it means about the possibility another referendum. Another hyper hypothetical, i am sorry, but i am going to throw it in there anyway, News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond, his new alba party, is it really doing that well . Probably not, may be 3 to 5 according to the polls, but say he did get seats in there and he stands up did get seats in there and he stands up and says, i am putting forward a motion for an immediate move towards asking for another referendum on independence, and hes there in an alliance with the greens and with the snp, in terms of what they want, not a formal alliance but in terms of what they want, now, what is it going to look like for the scottish nationalists, to actually stop that motion, vote against that motion, what is that going to look like for News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon, if that ends up happening . It would make it awkward, though, because you would still have News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond something the drum for independence in there, saying, why are we not starting negotiations right away . It would make it awkward for News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon, News/no-doubt'>No Doubt about it. It is interesting because whatever happens to mr salmond tomorrow, whether he wins a seat, whether his party wins a seat, i think he has done two things, hes changed some of the discussion around independence, he think he has made it more urgent, he has may be scared off some soft independence voters, but the other thing, which we will be watching out for tomorrow, as well as how the snp did in the constituencies, News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond talking about splitting the vote between the constituency and the region, remember, you get two votes, hideously complicated, it would take us all afternoon to explain the formula. I think youre right there, i think that is definitely the area that labour has got most concern, the area that the tories feel they have got most to gain. When you look at the two parties it is interesting how they have approached this election. On the one hand welsh labour, News/mark-'>Mark drakeford, who has been the News/first-minister'>First Minister throughout the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic, his recognition and the recognition of the News/first-minister'>First Minister, has never been higher in wales. Will that work for him oragainst him . Welsh labour clearly think it will work for him, hes been front and centre of their campaign. So really i think the story in wales will be labour obviously being in power here since the senedd first started, doesnt look like they will have the same number of seats, according to the polls, as five years ago, potentially losing a couple of seats, i suppose, how many, and if they lose News/constituency-seats'>Constituency Seats, can they pick up in the regional vote . Talking about News/plaid-cymru'>Plaid Cymru as well, they will be battling hard for second place with the tory party, looking to take areas like llanelli, but looking to hold on to areas like the rhondda, where labour have been trying hard, former Plaid Leader News/leanne-wood'>Leanne Wood standing there. And the News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats, they have one seat, in brecon and radnorshire, fighting to hold onto that, they were wiped out in the News/general-election'>General Election 2019 so they will be hoping that will not happen again there on thursday. And they will be challenging in areas like News/cardiff-central'>Cardiff Central here. Held by labour since 2019, ten years ago, not 2019, sorry, ten years ago, 2001, but the three parties will be challenging in different areas here as well. One other sentiment i should mention, abolish the senedd, News/the-party'>The Party, gaining some momentum, they will be looking to get some regional seats, if they can, and it will be interesting to see how that dynamic works, but some pundits suggest that the Independence Sentiment from News/plaid-cymru'>Plaid Cymru and this abolish sentiment from some of the other parties probably wont resonate enough with the welsh public and really it will come down to who the welsh public think can steer wales through the rest of the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic. Now in indonesia, theres a pioneering initiative to try to restore them, as our science editor, david shukman, reports. Its one of the most shocking sights in the Underwater World, when corals die, either because theyre damaged or because the sea becomes too hot for them and they turn into what looks like a graveyard. And because most corals are threatened as global temperatures continue to rise, any attempt to save even small areas will need real determination. David shukman, News/bbc-News'>Bbc News. There is concern that, this summer, there might be 250,000 children in england who should have learned to swim but wont have managed to. Now, with summer holidays in particular often taking place near to water, the fear will move towards drowning. The drowning statistics will be out around may time for last year. We are expecting to see an increase in those, which, to me, is absolutely heartbreaking, and a lost generation willjust add to that as the years go on, so we cant afford a lost generation of children not being able to swim. I would remind you, for example, of the transport of electricity by underwatercables, so we have the means, and even though i am sorry it has come to this, we will do so if we have to. Rather like the tides, tensions have been rising in recent days, and just 14 miles from here, on the french coast, there are growing calls for a blockade of this, the islands main harbour, which it is thought could take place as soon as tomorrow. At the same time, jersey fishermen have been told to stay away from french ports and normandy s regional office, which works to foster relations between the two sides, has closed in protest at the new rules. Well, it is not the first time that we have received threats from the french government, unfortunately. What we must do now is deal with the technical issues that they have experienced. Of course, it seems disproportionate to suggest that, for the sake of conditions on 17 licences that we are issuing together with the eu, that such threats should be made. Although the industry doesnt contribute significant amounts to jerseys economy, many feel fishing is an integral part ofjersey s island identity, and, whilst some have sympathy with the french, the head ofjersey s News/fishermens-association'>Fishermens Association believes no matter what the island offers it will not be enough. Its really important that we dont capitulate at the very first point, at the very first stage, so. Otherwise we are just going to see a legacy left forfuture ministers, for our fishermen, where every time a sustainable News/management-measure'>Management Measure is put in place it will see this kind of blockading of ports and bans on landings, which is just an unacceptable way of going about business. With talks ongoing today, both sides will be helping stormy seas will soon subside. Freddie miller, News/bbc-News'>Bbc News, jersey. If youve been out cycling recently, theres every chance youve been overtaken by someone pedalling pretty slowly, but travelling pretty fast. Sales of News/electric-bikes'>Electric Bikes have boomed during the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic but theyre not a new invention, as our News/reporter-danjohnson'>Reporter Danjohnson has been finding out. Asjeremy clarkson three rickety wheels. Two wobbly pedals. And the electrifying force of 2a volts. That is a replica of an 1881 trouve electric vehicle. Gustave trouve was a frenchman who married an News/english-tricycle'>English Tricycle with his own battery and motor, thereby creating what we think is the first ever rechargeable electric vehicle. Its very rickety to ride. Its a steel frame, hard, solid rubber wheels and tyres. From just a picture, the original News/e-bike'>E Bike has been carefully recreated. Why, jeremy, why . Because i think a lot of people realise that electric vehicles are the future. Weve been told that thats the only type of vehicle youre going to be able to buy after 2030. But theyre not new. And this one is 140 years old. Because it is rechargeable and because it was 140 years ago this week that trouve ran it, its a story. Electric bikes are getting more popular. So i took a more modern model for a ride. All you do is use a couple of buttons to just change the level of assistance youre going to get. But then if you suddenly come to a steep hill, you can press the button, suddenly youll get more i assistance and you can get up pretty much any hill. Ill let you lead the way then, john. So this is making me look and feel like a better cyclist than i am, really. Am i being lazy . Well, i dont think so. Were not racing anybody. Were just having a nice day out in the country. I and i think anything that gets more people more active and gets more. | News/people-cycling'>People Cycling can only be a News/goodj-thing'>Goodj Thing for them and for the planet. It certainly makes the hills feel easier. And theyre on city streets as well, especially as more deliveries are being made on two wheels. So, we at cycling uk think that News/e-bike'>E Bikes are a real News/game-changer'>Game Changer in the cycling world. We think they can encourage people who wouldnt usually think of themselves as cyclists to get out on bikes and try that. Theyre particularly good for perhaps older people, people who are less fit. And people who live in really hilly areas of the uk, because it really flattens those hills. So what about the cost . Dutch style city bike, at around about £2000. The folding high performance electric bike here at around £3000. And the bentley, rolls royce of the electric bike here, at around £8,000. Certainly over the last 12 to 18 months, weve seen an explosion in News/popularity-and-demand'>Popularity And Demand for News/electric-bikes'>Electric Bikes. Driven primarily by technological advances in the products, batteries getting lighter and better, the products are getting more durable. Thats both consumers but also businesses who are moving from more traditional News/fossil-fuel'>Fossil Fuel vehicles to electric cargo bikes to deliver their goods. I am of course a picture of parisian elegance, and i need a ride home, so this is it. Thats for steering. The power is here. And the brake is, er. A bit of leather that rubs on the wheel. Wish me luck here we go. All right, well, it moves, hey up its like rubbing your head and patting your stomach or whatever. Crikey more News/pedal-power'>Pedal Power is coming with a jolt of electricity. Ooh News/la-la'>La La but the News/e-trike'>E Trike looks truly unique. Watch out for the ditch danjohnson, News/bbc-News'>Bbc News, surrey. Laughter i hope you found the break. Time for a look at the weather with tomas. Another day of showers, and as the word suggests, they can be on and off, fleeting, some of them cold, some of them bringing News/hail-and-thunder'>Hail And Thunder as well. Of course where the hail falls, its pretty dramatic, but hailstorms tend to be pretty local. They might be a mile across or so, so further down the road there could be nothing at all. This is the pattern on the satellite picture, you can see the Speckled Cloud here, that is the current of Cold Air coming in from the north. These are arctic winds. It is the story of the last few weeks, which is you keep getting these shots of cold from the north, and through the course of today, this current of Cold Air is driving these showers, and if you combine that with strong may sunshine, you get these Big Cumulus Clouds forming, they are pretty deep, pretty tall clouds, and within them, all these currents of air form the hailstones. But as i say, they are very hit and miss and most of us are actually in for a pretty bright day. Now, the cold current of air is with us through the course of this evening, and actually what is perhaps a little more unusual is the fact we will see some News/snow-falling'>Snow Falling across the hills and possibly even down to lower levels across parts of scotland through tonight and into tomorrow. You can see temperatures are close to freezing, so there could be a little dusting of snow here and there, and some icy patches as well. Now, elsewhere tomorrow, there could be a bit of cloud and some spots of Rain Flirting with the southern counties, but the afternoon is looking much brighter. I think the day tomorrow, the afternoon is pretty good across wales and the News/south-west'>South West of the country, but certainly some northern and eastern areas are in for further showers and again News/hail-and-thunder'>Hail And Thunder, very hit and miss though, but dramatic weight falls. But dramatic where it falls. So here is fridays weather forecast, further showers across some northern and eastern areas of the country, but elsewhere i think it is a pretty decent day. Then towards News/the-end'>The End of the week and into the weekend, we are starting to see a shift in the wind pattern. It starts to blow out the News/south-west'>South West, weather fronts arrive as well, that spells rain, but also with this rain comes this subtropical air. So we are going to cut off that current of Cold Air from the arctic and things are going to warm up a little bit, so it will be warm and wet i think for many of us on saturday, and then briefly on sunday warm too. Goodbye. Its the last day of campaigning in a series of elections across england, scotland and wales. Millions of people will head to the News/polls-tomorrow'>Polls Tomorrow for the biggest set of local and national elections in 50 years. I m here in edinburgh, as the last pitches for votes are made in the crucial elections for the scottish parliament here at holyrood. The other main stories at three oclock. At four oclock. And we heard there they News/assistant-chief-constable'>Assistant Chief Constable say they have had over 700 pieces of information from members of The Public in particular, in and around the area whereNews/julia-james'>Julia James was found. And that is what theyre sifting through at the moment. Only northern News/ireland-wont'>Ireland Wont be going to the polls. The News/voting-tomorrow'>Voting Tomorrow represents the biggest set of local and national elections in almost half a century. In a moment, well look at the contests here in scotland and in wales, but first lets look at whats at stake in england. 4,650 News/council-seats'>Council Seats are being contested across 143 local authorities. 13 directly elected mayors are being selected, including for london, where 25 seats are also up for grabs in the city 5 assembly. Elsewhere, all eyes will be on hartlepool, where theres a parliamentary News/by-election'>By Election to choose a new mp. Voters across england and wales will also have the chance to select a total of 39 new police and crime commissioners. Our political correspondent News/helen-catt'>Helen Catt has a News/round-up'>Round Up of a frantic day of campaign visits around england. Its being called super thursday. Tomorrow, voters in england will choose who is in charge of services like policing, social care, recycling and mending the roads. Because of covid, it will be a News/bumper-set'>Bumper Set of elections, unlike any other, but the pressure on the political parties to do well remains the same. Ive got five plus one, is that. . Theres particular scrutiny on how the numbers add up for labour. Keir starmer, at a News/food-bank'>Food Bank in pontefract this morning, is facing his first public test of opinion as leader. What we need across the country are labour candidates from their communities, of their communities, that are going to stand up against this government, and thats the choice before the country tomorrow. We stood up for those that have no voice, those who have been neglected by local authorities, weve given them a platform to be heard, and people have appreciated that and people have voted green. Political parties here in scotland are making their final push ahead of elections to the holyrood parliament. Voters will elect 129 msps, with the campaigning this year looking a little different. And News/polling-day'>Polling Day and the count will also be unusual. Political News/correspondent-nick-eardley'>Correspondent Nick Eardley is with me now. Clive, if anyone tells you this afternoon that they know what is going to happen tomorrow, cut them off, because they dont. The final News/result-tomorrow'>Result Tomorrow is about as predictable as the weather has been this afternoon. The parties are all nervous because this has been a very different News/election-campaign'>Election Campaign. They dont have all the data they normally have, which they gather by going around peoples doors and asking them how they are going to vote. The papers in News/scotland-today'>Scotland Today carry a number of polls which tell you, if you read one, that there is going to be a massive majority for the snp, another, that it is going to be a terrible night for the snp, it could be their worst results since 2007, another one telling you it is too close to call. And i think it is too close to call. And i think it is, it is going to come down to a few constituencies and if you seats on the regional list. Remember, scots get two votes, one for your local msp, and one for your region, which uses a formula to figure out proportional representation to top up proportional representation to top up what you have got from the constituencies. All the parties are a bit nervous this afternoon, theyre a bit nervous about turnout, that will be really important, theyre a bit nervous about how it will all translate. And the truth is, if youre watching News/at-home'>At Home and youre a politicaljunkie and you want to know, when will i know if the snp have a majority . It could be well into saturday, because the count is going to take a while, there is a lot of social distancing going on in the counting centres so they are doing it slowly. She uploaded a video of herself trying to navigate the pavements of soho in london, showing how difficult its become for her to get around now that the pavements are full of tables and chairs. Over the last month or so, when we see those restrictions have lifted somewhat in terms of restaurants being able to offer people outside seating, so for someone who is totally blind like me, who works with a guide dog, i have noticed so many times now where i have to literally battle my way through, and understandably, we are all wanting to go out and socialise with our friends and family, but it is just about asking for space, just to be aware that we need to be able to navigate safely through familiar streets. Our News/disability-correspondent'>Disability Correspondent nikki foxjoins me now. Katies video shows brilliantly how difficult it is for her, how much harder has the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic made it for people with disabilities to get out and about . . , people with disabilities to get out and about . , a, and about . But i think what the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic has done is really to expose the cracks that already existed for many, and in many cases made them bigger. Ive covered stories on the difficulties many blind people and those with learning disabilities have faced when it comes to social distancing. Deaf people who rely on lip reading, the difficulties they have had with News/everyone-'>Everyone wearing masks, accessibility obviously has also been a constant theme. The organisation that katie works for, transport for all, say this is very much a uk wide issue and you can see thatjust looking on social media. I have had people sending me pictures of disabled bays being used as queueing areas or queueing zones. Of course we are all living through extraordinary times and measures have to be taken to keep us all safe, but pretty much every disabled person i have spoken to throughout the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic has said theyve never felt more like an afterthought than at this particular time, and that is exactly how katie feels. She said that what she experienced in her hometown made her feel that what she experienced in her hometown made herfeel like she doesnt belong. I think many organisations that i speak to would like accessibility to be seen more as a right, rather than a luxury, and while there is definitely an understanding of the pressures many businesses are under at the moment, and the fact that all of us want to start getting back out there, that cant be at the expense of disabled people, who also want to get back out there as well and consideration must be taken when it comes to access for News/everyone-'>Everyone. Politicians are campaigning on the finaNews/l-day'>L Day before national and local elections take place across england, scotland and wales tomorrow. Clive myrie is at holyrood. Hello there. A finaNews/l-day'>L Day of campaigning. A little less frenetic than perhaps one would usually expect, just 2a hours before a big poll. The News/coronavirus-News/pandemic-'>Pandemic'>Coronavirus Pandemic has made it difficult for canvassers and campaigners and candidates to get out there, press the flesh, banging on doors and try to solicit votes, so a bit more subdued but nevertheless lots of nervous News/nail-biting'>Nail Biting going on in all the campaigns, as we get closer to the vote. Lets get the perspective of News/kevin-hague'>Kevin Hague who runs the unionist campaigning group, these islands. Thank you forjoining us. Ijust wonder where you disappointed that perhaps there wasnt a loose grouping of unionist or union supporting parties, labour, conservative and News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats, to try to press the case for the union against the onslaught of the snp . I union against the onslaught of the snp . , , union against the onslaught of the snp . ,. Snp . I wouldnt say i was disappointed snp . I wouldnt say i was disappointed because snp . I wouldnt say i was disappointed because i i snp . I wouldnt say i was i disappointed because i dont snp . I wouldnt say i was disappointed because i dont think anybody realistically expected that that would happen. It is just the reality of the way politics is structured in the uk, frankly it favours a party like the snp, a single News/issue-party'>Issue Party in a devolved nation will always have that advantage, that their opposition, when it comes to the constitutional question, is frustrated fragmented, and it is hard to see that changing. So i wouldnt say i was disappointed because i would be needed to have expected it to happen to be disappointed that it didnt. But thats interesting, though, it is political will, isnt it . If News/douglas-ross'>Douglas Ross and willie rennie, anas sarwar, if they say we need to defeat this, the greens, alba, with News/alex-salmond'>Alex Salmond, they are putting forward a persuasive case potentially for independence and for a second referendum, it is political will, it is not necessarily the construction of The System here. If the leaders wanted to happen, it could couldnt it . The leaders wanted to happen, it could couldnt it . What is accepting the nationalist could couldnt it . What is accepting the nationalist framing could couldnt it . What is accepting the nationalist framing that could couldnt it . What is accepting the nationalist framing that says i the nationalist framing that says the nationalist framing that says the only issue that matters in politics is the question of separation. And as we know, in uk politics, there are lots of other issues, and those are by the way issues, and those are by the way issues that the scottish electorate cares about a lot more than it does about the constitution. Soto sort of accept that nationalist contract, which says theres only one question here, should scotland break away from the or not, you would have to accept that to say, ok, all the other parties, forget all of the other parties, forget all of the other differences and their other quite important philosophical differences around how you approach the questions of making a better society, put all that to one side because the only thing that matters is the constitution. Now, that is true for the snp. It is not true for the other parties. There are very real differences with their political values, so no, i dont think it isjust political values, so no, i dont think it is just a question of political will because that would be to accept that the only question that matters is should scotland be independent, and there are far more important questions, particularly in the context of brexit, in the context of a News/pandemic-'>Pandemic, the need of the economic recovery that we face. So no, i dont accept that actually, i dont accept that it would be appropriate for all the other parties to come into line and say, fine, we are defined by one issue. The snp can be defined by that one issue, and they are, but it would not be appropriate for the other political parties to define themselves only by that one issue. That is how we end up with the frankly rather depressing situation we are in at the moment, that scotland is to all intents and purposes split down the middle on the question of independence and yet the question of independence and yet the polls tell us consistently that independence is not toppo News/peoples-list'>Peoples List when it comes to their concerns. So as long as the News/snp-control'>Snp Control the narrative, they push it towards this question of there is only one question, should scotland be independent, and the other political parties i dont think should accept that narrative and they should try to move the conversation on to what i would argue are more constructive topics. Thank you forjoining us. Lets get the other side of the coin. Im joined now by blairjenkins, News/journalist-and-broadcaster'>Journalist And Broadcaster and former chief executive of the News/yes-scotland-campaign'>Yes Scotland Campaign in the 2014 referendum. Pro independence of course. Blair, good to see you. Thanks for being with us. There are far more important issues than independence, coronavirus, the economy, employment, jobs, the health service, education, and yet the narrative, because of the power of the snp, has been focused on independence, and thats just a mistake. Independence, and thats ust a mistake. ~ ~. Mistake. Well, i think where that anal sis mistake. Well, i think where that analysis goes mistake. Well, i think where that analysis goes wrong, mistake. Well, i think where that analysis goes wrong, clive, mistake. Well, i think where that analysis goes wrong, clive, is mistake. Well, i think where that | analysis goes wrong, clive, is that the News/argument-and-debate'>Argument And Debate around independence connects to every other issue in scotland. It connects to what kind of economy do we want to have, what kind of society do we want to have, a big issue in scotland is not being part of a continuing tory political agenda in the uk because what we know is that leaves to poverty, austerity, loss of opportunity, so News/independence-isnt-something'>Independence Isnt Something that stands apart from all these other important political and social and economic issues, it is absolutely the key to unlocking those issues, as far as people who support independence are concerned, and that is why it has become the News/dominant-issue'>Dominant Issue in scottish politics. It is not about identity or how scottish do you feel, it really is about political direction and the sense here is that scotland wishes to take a different political direction from what looks like the prevailing view in the rest of the uk. But like the prevailing view in the rest of the uk. . Of the uk. But we are in the middle of the uk. But we are in the middle of a ulobal of the uk. But we are in the middle of a global News/pandemic-'>Pandemic, of the uk. But we are in the middle of a global News/pandemic-'>Pandemic, you of the uk. But we are in the middle of a global News/pandemic-'>Pandemic, you know . I of the uk. But we are in the middle. Of a global News/pandemic-'>Pandemic, you know . We know that something like 3000 people have died of coronavirus in care homes in scotland, it is one of the worst records in europe. We know that the stick that the conservatives, labour and the News/liberal-democrats'>Liberal Democrats have been beating the snp with throughout this campaign is that independence is a distraction, it takes peoples eyes of the real important issues, which is education, coronavirus and all those other things. I mean, is education, coronavirus and all those otherthings. I mean, it is education, coronavirus and all those other things. I mean, it is an achilles heel, isnt it, potentially, for the snp, and always has been, that they are in a sort of a one News/track-mind'>Track Mind when it comes to what the real issue here, which they say is independence. I what the real issue here, which they say is independence. What the real issue here, which they say is independence. I think the snp would say and say is independence. I think the snp would say and l say is independence. I think the snp would say and i think say is independence. I think the snp would say and i think they say is independence. I think the snp would say and i think they would would say and i think they would write to be say that they are not regarded in scotland as being a single News/issue-party'>Issue Party, they are regarded as a centre left party who have a value fully worked out agenda across the holes persists gilbert. The News/pandemic-'>Pandemic has been a horrible expense of News/everyone-'>Everyone, i think News/nicola-sturgeon'>Nicola Sturgeon has been very clear there is no question of launching a News/independence-referendum'>Independence Referendum until we are safely the other side of a News/pandemic-'>Pandemic. As you say, as a guy who ran the News/yes-campaign'>Yes Campaign last time, we can only run the kind of campaign that we need to run, which is community based, it is a street based campaign, very much anchored in local communities. That kind of campaign, conversational in nature, is only possible once we get to the other end of the News/pandemic-'>Pandemic, once we are in the clear if you like from the News/health-emergency'>Health Emergency we have all been living through. So you are right, there is a question about the timing of the referendum and it is probably 18 months, two years away, something like that. I think what people know, though, when they vote tomorrow, is if they vote for the snp or they vote for the scottish greens, then they know that what they are voting for is that there will be the right to choose, that scotland will get the chance to choose independence at some point in the next five years at the moment that has a point of principle, the right to choose, which has been the News/dominant-issue'>Dominant Issue in this election. Shill News/dominant-issue'>Dominant Issue in this election. All riuht. Dominant issue in this election. All right. We will leave it there. Blair jenkins, really good to see you. Thank you joining us. So this is the finaNews/l-day'>L Day of campaigning. Getting down to the wire now. Lots of nerves in the various camps, but of course it will be in the voterss hands in the next few hours. With that, martin, back to you. I am looking forward to seeing some dogs at News/polling-station'>Polling Stations, always my favourite bit of News/polling-day'>Polling Day. Now, in indonesia, there s a pioneering initiative to try to restore them as our News/science-editor-david'>Science Editor David shukman reports. It s one of the most shocking sights in the Underwater World when corals die either because they re damaged or because the sea becomes too hot for them and they turn into what looks like a graveyard. When you dive on a reef and it s just quiet and it s all monotone grey, it s desolate, it s so depressing. Well, scientists i ve spoken to are impressed by the way that reefs that were once dead are now being revived, and, because the task is so huge, they welcome funding from big name companies. Ben is with you at five o clock. Now it s time for a look at the weather with stav. Another day of showers, and as the word suggests, they can be on and off, fleeting, some of them cold, some of them bringing News/hail-and-thunder'>Hail And Thunder as well. Of course where the hail falls, it s pretty dramatic, but hailstorms tend to be pretty local. I think the day tomorrow, the afternoon is pretty good across wales and the News/south-west'>South West of the country, but certainly some northern and eastern areas are in for further showers and again News/hail-and-thunder'>Hail And Thunder, very hit and miss though, but dramatic where it falls. So here is friday s weather forecast, further showers across some northern and eastern areas of the country, but elsewhere i think it is a pretty decent day.
