The wet and windy weather yesterday, and there was a lot of rain yesterday, swept away, and it has left us with a wind coming more from the north which is maintaining this cold feel. There is sunshine but showers and we have a zone of more cloud and longer spells of rain moving southwards across scotland into Northern England, across northern ireland, into wales and parts of the midlands and East Anglia. Temperatures 13 or 1a, but otherwise cold for the time of year im feeling colder in the winds, which are easing a bit later. At the same time, heading into this evening and overnight, we will see the cloudy, wet weather working towards wales and the West Country. Clearer skies following to the north, increasing showers elsewhere. In scotland and Northern England we are more likely to have Frost Heading into tomorrow. More wintry showers for northern scotland, not many elsewhere, showers affecting northern ireland, over the Irish Sea into wales, pushing into the midlands and the South East of england. Sunshine elsewhere and a fuchsia was too the temperature is disappointing, up to 11 or 12 at The Very Best and a few showers. The win sees overnight into thursday, we have a little runner coming from the atlantic bringing more cloud into the far south of england and wales. Some rain, mainly through the English Channel, sunshine and showers, but fairly frequent showers, but fairly frequent showers, across scotland and the north of england, wintry over the highest ground. 7 degrees at newcastle, 13 perhaps in cardiff with the sunshine. Into friday, a cold start, may be more foster rants, cloud bubbling up, the charity developing but it will be a dry day fortnightly and a bit milder the shower developing. 1a or 15 degrees at best. Into the beginning of next week we have another area of low pressure bringing rain on saturday to many parts of the winds will be more from the south, which could bring much needed warmer weatherfor a time, mainly into the South East. The organisers of the indian Premier League say they unanimously agreed to postpone the tournament following an emergency meeting today. It comes as three of the leagues franchises reported positive tests amongst its Playing Staff in the last two days. The Board Of Control For Cricket In India said it didnt want to compromise the safety of the players or anyone involved in the ipl, as henry morean reports. Once we got News Yesterday that two players representing the Kolkata Knight Riders Franchise had tested positive, then conversations started and they were always going to. Would the tournament be able to continue . Then we got news that three inside the Chennai Camp had tested positive and then this morning, sunrises hyderabad wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha was the latest to test positive. That then perhaps forced the hand of the bcci. They had an extraordinary meeting at Midday India time this morning, or this afternoon, i should say, and made the decision the tournament could not go ahead. The question is when would they be able to fit the competition in . Because this is a tournament that is fitted into a densely that is fitted into a densely populated schedule of cricket across 2021. India are meant to be in england to play the World Test Championship Finalfrom Mid June and are not due to leave until mid september. Following that, there is a T20 World Cup in october, so theres a hugely cramped schedule. It is when they can possibly fit in the remainder 30 games or so of the indian Premier League. Beaten World Snooker Finalist Shaun Murphy heaped praise on last Nights Winner Mark selby, calling him the greatest all round player in the game at the moment. The players hear every gasp and groan on the table. Gasps from crowd. Oh, so close one mistake is often enough for Mark Selby, his snooker has been unforgiving. There he goes this now was his fourth World Title, and his first for four years. A few years ago, i had some really, really dark days, you know . And, yeah, times were tough. So obviously, all the family, and everyone who is close to me will understand obviously what im going through, so this has been a special one, you know . To win it four times, its just something i could only dream of. Sport is nothing without the fans, and, you know, we have been. So thrilled to have everyone back this last fortnight. We will take a look at a few stories here that we have not had a chance to touch on so far this our. Thousands of children are currently separated from their parents as the result of the conflict in the Tigray Region of ethiopia thats the conclusion of a report by the charity Save The Children. Many are said to be living in unsafe and dire conditions in informal camps. Six months after the fighting started, the charity says almost A Thousand unaccompanied children have been recorded by the United Nations and more than 4,000 have been separated from their parents. It says many of them have no adults to look after them and are at risk of neglect and sexual and physical abuse. Our Africa Correspondent Correspondent Catherine Byaruhanga explained the background to the crisis. Its already very difficult to get Aid And Support to tigray and now what Save The Children are saying is that children really are facing the brunt of this. Many of them are turning up at informal camps, they dont have adult caregivers and this means its very hard for them to get food, water and shelter. And on top of this, some children are living in single rooms with dozens of other people including adults. Now this leaves them at risk of physical and even sexual violence. The important thing right now is to open up access for humanitarian organisations across tigray. The un estimates that 1. 7 million people have been displaced because of the fighting. But because of the inaccessibility to much of the region, only 10 of these people have received humanitarian aid. Now the un, the United States and several European Countries are calling for an end to the conflict, for negotiations, and for the thousands of people in the region to receive the aid that they need. This is a conflict that began in november of last year. You had the regional government, the tplf, that took on the federal government, the ethiopian government. A month into the conflict, the government in Addis Ababa said they had won the war but the fighting has continued, forces from eritrea have been involved in this Conflict And Weve received numerous reports of massacres being committed by all sides. Now another aspect of this conflict has been the use of rape women, young girls have talked about being raped by soldiers either from Eritrea And Ethiopia and right now, the real concern is that people arejust being caught up in this conflict and they are not getting the help that they need. I will with the background to the crisis. Our correspondence. Matthew sugrue, humanitarian director at Save The Children, described the depth of the needs theyre trying to address. The numbers speak for themselves, we are seeing over 4000 children separated from at least one parent if not both, almost 1000 unaccounted with no legal guardians and 1. 7 million people across the region who have been displaced and 4. 5 million people who are in need of humanitarian assistance and i think those are numbers really do speak to the urgency and critical nature of the urgency and critical nature of the situation. The current response is scaling up, we are seeing an increase in funding from the international community which is good, but quite frankly, the scale of the crisis is that simply outpacing the funding at the Moment And Aid agencies, including Save The Children, are doing what we can to help people in need across the region and in our case focusing on children in need. Imagine if you are 11, 12, or children in need. Imagine if you are 11,12, oryoungerand you children in need. Imagine if you are 11,12, or younger and you have children in need. Imagine if you are 11, 12, or younger and you have been separated from your home, friends, family, from what you are used to come out living, where you felt comfortable and know you are living in crowded conditions, is in some cases 50 people are living in crowded conditions, in some cases 50 people or more living in one room, cases of ptsd, children withdrawing and really showing signs and symptoms of horrific conflict. Children living in these kind of conditions and informal camps and settlements really are at a heightened risk and we know this from around the world in different responses at risk of whether it is abuse or other violence or exportation. The children in tigray have been out of school for over a year, first because of buys another conflict. Violence or exploitation. Aid agencies are doing what they can, but it is a critical need and gap, finding a way to get the kids back into education. Protection of children and civilians and providing those mental Health Support as well as food and medical care that civilians across the region are the highest priority and needs right now. President biden says his administration will allow almost 63,000 refugees into the United States this year. Last Month Mr Biden said he would stick to an annual limit of 15,000 brought in under president trump. That decision was widely condemned by many democrats and Refugee Aid groups. A Landmark Trial has begun in the United States against apple, accusing the Tech Giant of abusing its market dominance. Epic games, which makes fortnite, says Game And App developers have no choice but to use the technology giants App Store. Apple denies that its practices are unfair. Leah nylen is the anti Trust Reporter at politico, whos been following the trial from oakland in california. She explained its significance. Epic is really bringing claims that get to the root of apples entire business model. They are challenging Apples Ability to regulate its App Store, one of its biggest revenue centres. What they really want is they want to reduce the commission is that developers have to pay. They right now. Apple charges all developers of digital goods a 30 commission. Epic would like that to be lower. They also would like to offer apps within the App Store, like other App Stores, essentially, within apples App Store. So you could go to epic s App Store and download games from there instead of from apple, and that would Sort Of Completely Upend apples business model. Thats what epic wants, if it wins, but it is Sort Of a legal tricky area here in the us. Its something that they call the Sort Of very frontiers of competition law. So its not a guaranteed win for epic, but there is a lot of interest in this trial at the congressional level as well. About two weeks ago there was a hearing here in congress about App Stores, and there were senators of both parties, the republicans and democrats, who were really very sceptical, i would say, of apples arguments, and suggested that they might want to possibly change the law or regulate if epic should lose. The german Airline Lufthansa says it aims to fit its Cargo Fleet with a Surface Film that mimics shark skin, to try to reduce its carbon emissions. It says the durable material reduces drag by more than 1 . Lufthansa wants to start the process by early next year, once its secured regulatory approval. It calculates that, over the course of 12 months, the measure would save the equivalent of 48 individual flights from frankfurt to shanghai. The headlines on Bbc News at least 23 people have been killed and dozens injured in Mexico City after a Railway Bridge carrying a Metro Train collapsed onto a busy road. Foreign ministers from the G7 Group of industrialised nations are meeting in london, it is the first face to face talks for more than two years. And the Prime Minister has announced new Trade And Investment deals with india worth £1 billion. It is safe to say after the year we have had, people have a lot to think about before heading to the polls on thursday. My heart stopped twice, so they had to cpr me, twice. In march last year, Scott Howell became the first Coronavirus Patient that needed intensive Care Treatment at the royal Gwent Hospital in newport, south wales. My wife had two calls to say that was it, i wasnt going to pull through. The advice they got from italy was suggesting that if people had not come out of a coma within two weeks, if they did come out, they were going to have major failures of organs, and i took two and a half weeks. But yeah, it wasnt looking good. My heart had stopped twice. They had to perform cpr on me. My kidneys had failed. I was on dialysis. He made a miraculous recovery after his eight weeks in hospital, but it took him the best part of last year before feeling normal once again. For the rest of that year, i thought i was going to die every day. So every twinge i had, every day i got up and didnt feel myself, i thought, this is going to be my last day. It makes you appreciate the very simple things. The two things i did not have in hospital that i wanted was fresh Air And Someone to give me a cwtch. Back working from home now and spending time with the family, has his experience of covid impacted how he will vote on May The 6th . High enough yet . It has changed where i put my vote this time. I met nurses when i was in there, seeing how hard they worked. I met one nurse in particular who had come out of retirement to help because she felt that was her vocation and she had to help, putting herself into a crisis, where people were dying of the nursing staff, and she still put herself out there. This year, as well as education and the future of the nhs, Welsh Independence and abolishing the welsh parliament, as well as the governments handling of covid, are just some of the themes being passed around by the parties standing in this election. Cut towards the ball but which issues have caught the minds of the cardiff harlequins senior mens rugby team, back at training after four and a half months of enforced Winter Break . Things like health, social care, housing, those are the important things, i think overlooked sometimes in these discussions, so yeah, those core things really, for me. I feel like this year, University Students have been left behind, Sort Of, not concentrated enough on, Sort Of, our mental health. I think we need to make our own decisions, so for me, i believe firmly in independence and thats the way we need to go. Its one that has to look quite broad. I think weve got a lot of problems at the moment in society. I think we need to look at a broad spectrum. Since the Senedds Inception just over two decades ago, Welsh Labour has been in power in some Shape Or Form but now, theres more choice than ever for welsh voters come May The 6th. And for many, the key question will be, do we want more of the same or is it Time For A Change . Tomos morgan, Bbc News, outside the senedd. If youre a star Wars Fan then youve probably already said may the forth be with you. Hundreds of items from the original star Wars Trilogy which were owned by the darth Vader Actor Dave Prowse are going under the hammer today. Ali vowles has been to find out more. You can see the costume already. Its amazing, its so imposing. Im being shown some of the 600 lots that will be sold online in bristol, and what a treasure trove. For daddy dave, my preferred father. Much love, carrie fisher. Signed photos from the stars, darth Vaders Helmet used at Fan Conventions all are attracting attention. Whats happened . We have broken so many In House Records already. Within 24 hours of that catalogue going online, we had over 800 bids. We have had thousands upon thousands of pounds of bids left. Interest from all over the world. The appeal of Star Wars is completely worldwide and the fact that that little piece of star Wars History comes from bristol is what i think makes this so, so special. Dave prowse s imposing 6ft 6 height made him the perfect choice for darth vader. Its no secret that he was disappointed that his voice was never used on the film. One of the hottest items, his script from The Empire Strikes Back movie. So we placed an estimate on this of £3000£5,000. But bids have already far, far exceeded that. That is a unique piece of Cinema History there. Key lines were removed from it to keep darth Vaders Relationship with Luke Skywalker secret, and dave was kept completely in the dark. You two need a lesson in crossing the road. From being the green Cross Code Man to the strong man in the gym, it was an extraordinary life. All catalogued and recorded by Daves Family and his friend and assistant. We have spent the past couple of months going through the house, the office, the garage, the shed, and lots of boxes and cupboards, just looking for anything that could be auctioned. It was unbelievable the amount of stuff we realised we had to go through. In his final years, the Bristol Actor was diagnosed with alzheimers, so some of the money raised from the online auction will go to the charity alzheimers research uk. A remarkable auction. Nine endangered giraffes have been rescued from an island threatened by rising Flood Waters in kenya. The Baringo Giraffe, also known as the rothschild giraffe, is close to extinction, with fewer than 2000 left in the wild. Emmanuel igunza reports. Its an audacious rescue mission. The Baringo Giraffe is being carefully ferried to a new home in a custom made barge. Shes one ofjust 3,000 Baringo Giraffes that remain in the world. The local community decided to act when a herd became trapped on a disappearing island. Decades of rising water in Lake Baringo meant the island was getting smaller every year. The Food Availability on the island is highly fluctuating and insufficient, so it is justifying in supporting the need for the translocation of the giraffe to the mainland. The team has been using Satellite Images to plan the move. The digital Africa Platform contains data that until recently was only available to a handful of people. Now the team can see changes in Water Levels and Vegetation Cover in the region going back several decades. Its a new tool for conservationists responding to africas increasingly unpredictable weather. These erratic patterns means that we have to deploy real time data and information to support Conservation Efforts both by citizens and governments to ensure that they plan effectively and try to mitigate the devastating impacts of these climatic changes. On the mainland, the barge must be carefully brought to the shore. The rest of the herd have already made this perilous journey and they are waiting for her in the new giraffe sanctuary. The long term aim is to introduce more giraffes from other parts of the country and build up Kenyas Population of Baringo Giraffes. Emmanuel igunza, Bbc News, kenya. Just one more piece of news to bring you before the weather because Marriage Certificates in england and wales will finally front today include the name of the Mother And Father of the newlyweds. Can you believe up until now the documents have only named the fathers . Marriages will also be recorded electronically for the first time as an attempt to modernise and some fight the registration system.
