We begin with the news that a uk india Free Trade Agreement is one step closer thats the promise from Downing Street as the Prime Minister announces new trade and investment deals with india worth £1 billion. Trade between the uk and india is already worth around 23 billion pounds a year and supports more than half a millionjobs, according to the government. But these latest new deals will bring in a further 533 million of new investment from india into the uk, which is expected to create about 6,000 newjobs. Lets go live to mumbai now for the details from our India Business correspondent nikhil inamdar. What more can you tell us . The focus of the what more can you tell us . Tie focus of the headlines, here at least, are very much under £214 Million Investment into the uk. This is of course the worlds last worlds biggest manufacturer of vaccines. They are really the centrepiece of this 1 billion trade deal that has been announced. As we move closer to that Virtual Summit which will happen later in the day, i think the focus would shift on the contours and the details of the enhanced partnership which as you said really is one step closer to a Free Trade Agreement. What that doesin Free Trade Agreement. What that does in terms of addressing the tariff and nontariff barriers that have been hindering the True Potential of this trade would be something that is mrs would be something that is mrs would be something that is mrs would be closely watching out for. The two countries have laid a roadmap for 2013 which they say would be the time by which they also double their trade with one another so even that will be sharply folk sharply in focus. Also what else they can do in terms of covid corporation. We have seen the uk send medical aid close to about £6 million last week and here in india, there is a great deal of interest in how much further the two countries can collaborate in terms of both aid and cooperation for covid 19. Both aid and cooperation for covid19 covid19. Thank you for that detail. Joining me now is is laura foll, fund manager, uk equity income, Janus Henderson investors. Good morning. The uk once all of these positive headlines about trade deals going on especially post brexit. Give us your take on this one. I especially postbrexit. Give us your take on this one. Your take on this one. I think there are your take on this one. I think there are a your take on this one. I think there are a couple your take on this one. I think there are a couple of your take on this one. I think there are a couple of things i your take on this one. I think. There are a couple of things to bearin there are a couple of things to bear in mind. Firstly, £1 billion while it is a large absolute number needs to be put in a context of a much, much larger overall uk Export Volume so actually1 billion will not make, as a standard, will not make, as a standard, will not make a huge amount of difference to the overall uk economy. It paths the way to a much broaderfree economy. It paths the way to a much broader free taint economy. It paths the way to a much Broaderfree Taint if it passed the way to a much broader agreement, then it will be but this agreement today regards are very few specific companies but beyond those specific deals, i wouldnt say this is a huge amount of materiality to the broader uk economy. Materiality to the broader uk economy materiality to the broader uk econom. . ,. , economy. But as we mentioned, downin economy. But as we mentioned, Downing Street economy. But as we mentioned, Downing Street saying economy. But as we mentioned, Downing Street saying this Downing Street saying this brings us closer to a Free Trade Agreement with india and india is a very important country to establish a Free Trade Agreement with, wouldnt you say . It freetrade agreement with, wouldnt you say . It certainly is. It is not wouldnt you say . It certainly is. It is not one wouldnt you say . It certainly is. It is not one of wouldnt you say . It certainly is. It is not one of our is. It is not one of our biggest Trading Partners at the moment, the eu and the us would be far bigger in terms of trading volumes, but we have got to bear in mind the size of indias pop population. It could be a much bigger Trading Partner in the future than it is now and we need to add that in mind, that while india might not be in our top ten Trading Economies right now, in 2030, it could be much, much larger and i think that is what the uk government is thinking about when it is assigning these types of deals. When it is assigning these types of deals. And from your rosect types of deals. And from your prosraeet of. Types of deals. And from your prospect of, when types of deals. And from your prospect of, when it types of deals. And from your prospect of, when it comes i types of deals. And from youri prospect of, when it comes to our advance in Terms Of Trade deals with other countries, since we left the european union, where are we at . I think we seem union, where are we at . I think we seem to union, where are we at . I think we seem to be union, where are we at . I think we seem to be making union, where are we at . I think we seem to be making fairly we seem to be making fairly steady progress. We have seen progress for example with australia. I think where i am yet to still see any material progress is with the us and Thatis Progress is with the us and that is obviously the very big one. If we can make some tangible progress there, that really would be material to the overall uk economy. The other area i am watching very closely is actually with the eu in terms of signing an equivalent steel or a deal around Financial Services because that is such a significant part of the uk economy. Shill is such a significant part of the uk economy. All right, laura, thank the uk economy. All right, laura, thank you. The uk economy. All right, laura, thank you. We the uk economy. All right, laura, thank you. We appreciate your thoughts on that. New research out today from make uk shows half of britains manufacturers have been the victim of Cyber Attacks in the last 12 months. The pandemic has increased our dependence on networked technologies and were also increasingly outsourcing our Computer Systems to cloud based companies. Cyber criminals have seized the opportunity but for manufacturers cost is still one of the Biggest Barriers to putting in place proper protection measures. Joining me now is verity davidge, director of policy, make uk and author of the report. She has been a part of this report. Tell us what you have discovered when you looked into cybercrime for uk manufacturers. , manufacturers. After the First National lockdown, manufacturers. After the First National lockdown, what manufacturers. After the First National lockdown, what we i manufacturers. After the first i national lockdown, what we saw is many manufacturers moved to remote production would also remote production would also Remote Monitoring of equipment. Of staff working from home, on what we are pretty much hastily supplied laptops on pretty much hastily supplied laptops. What has resulted in half of manufacturers have been subject to a cyber attack in the last 12 months. As a sector, manufacturing is one of the most targeted industries when it comes to cybercrime, particularly as it looks to digitise its plans and processes. What we have found is many plants can essentially be hijacked by hackers, they can take over the controls of equipment and machinery such as Industrial Furnaces equipment and machinery such as industrialfurnaces and equipment and machinery such as Industrial Furnaces and this can stop production and it can ruin materials. Intellectual property and even money can be taken directly from the payroll. What that is is a major cost to business and of the companies we survey, around a quarter said it was costing them around five and £25,000. 6 of those Companies Said that a cyber attack had cost them over £100,000 in the past 12 months. Now, fortunately for around half of those businesses, they have Financial Insurance put in place so they can recoup those losses but a number of companies dont still have those financial plans in place so if they are hit by a cyber attack, they can be significantly damaged in terms of theirfinances. So significantly damaged in terms of their finances. Of their finances. So as youve illustrated, of their finances. So as youve illustrated, this of their finances. So as youve illustrated, this is of their finances. So as youve illustrated, this is extremely. Illustrated, this is extremely costly for manufacturers when they fall victim. You say that they fall victim. You say that the barrier of putting the measures in place to prevent this from happening is a cost but surely that is a lesser cost, isnt it, if you become a victim . ,. , victim . The top barrier that our research victim . The top barrier that our Research Found victim . The top barrier that our Research Found was victim . The top barrier that our Research Found was the | victim . The top barrier that our Research Found was the cost of cyber products stop as you said it needs to be actually weighed up with the potential cost of cyber attack on what we want to do with this research is really demonstrate those costs that is nurses could see themselves paying but we are seeing that Cyber Security is higher up on companies agendas. Half manufacturers say it is now more important even a pandemic and that is translating into britains boardrooms too. So 61 of companies now have a named Board Director who is responsible Cyber Security across the business. That said, two thirds of Companies Still dont have a regular slot on a Board Meeting to actually discuss Cyber Security despite the heightened risk. I think our major concern is that it potentially hampers further investment in digital technologies. The robots that we have seen that take your cards, 3d that make prototypes before they are then made in a factory. 0ur concern is that Cyber Security is preventing companies from adopting those technologies, those technologies, those technologies have really kept sector running over the past 12 months, it could actually really hamper our industrys recovery. Eu officials will today begin discussing plans to lift restrictions on non essential travel from overseas. Now lets talk about ecocide. Should killing nature be a crime . French president Emmanuel Macron is one high profile supporter of the idea. Today the upper house of Frances Parliament is voting on an environmental law that will include ecocide. The bill is aimed at national events, such as the pollution of a river in france. Those who break the law could be liable to up to ten years in prison and a fine of 4. 5 million euro. This will be voted today, so this is a process today, so this is a process that has only taken case, and there are lots of thoughts around this idea and this is part of the law that is brought in. Of course that will be the decisions with the other chamber, but i think this is one of the things that the convention of citizens, you may know that this has been a long process where citizens were randomly selected, 150 of them, just to try to deal with these issues and tackle these issues related to climate, so at the end we have a series of laws that affect the car industry, the advertising industry, the housing and hospitality industry, the retail industry, so from the outside it may seem a bunch of multiple laws, but i would say that there is a relatively clear objective which is to reconcile Economic Activity but at the same time the Paris Agreement of 2015. Just briefly, to what extent will this have an impact in cutting Carbon Emissions . This is difficult cutting Carbon Emissions . This is difficult to cutting Carbon Emissions . This is difficult to say, cutting Carbon Emissions . This is difficult to say, but cutting Carbon Emissions . Ti 3 is difficult to say, but to give an example, the proponents wanted for instance, flights of less than four hours to be impossible in france, meaning going from paris to marseille, the law for the time being stays at two and a half hours, leon for instance, to paris, you will not be able to do a direct flight to these places, so this is an example of reduction of Carbon Emissions. Will it be enough . Never, for the proponents of the law, in terms of housing also, all the insulation of the housing has been reinforced, and the proponents of the strictest measures argue it is not enough, so it shows a very good path in one of the first time that consisted measures has been taken in an original democratic process. Its been taken in an original democratic process. Its very interesting. Democratic process. Its very interesting, i democratic process. Its very interesting, i really interesting, i really interesting, i really interesting process that has been going on in france. Thank you very much talking to us about it. If you think of african art as just being traditional bronzes and carvings, think again. Theres a surging Global Market for modern and Contemporary African Art which is seeing well healed collectors, private and institutional, paying Record Prices for important pieces. We have museums across the world really realising that there is perhaps an imbalance, and are looking to address that. And also some of the artists in africa, i must say it is a wonderful thing to be nowadays have a sustainable occupation. To what extent did artis benefit from this . Certainly if they are living, it will be the artist s estate, but if they are living artists, a lot of them are still active in africa, they maybe were able to get their works with galleries in africa, and then fortunate enough to have their works taken in by galleries in london and new york and am afraid that is really the way to success, certainly monetary success, and some of these works can fetch Hundreds Of Thousands of pounds. We resold the work by a young zimbabwean artist and it fetch almost 100,000. She has onlyjust been taken by the gallery in new york, and that is the reason why, her work is fetching very high prices. The wor is fetching very high prices. The worry is by fetching very high prices. The worry is by some fetching very high prices. The worry is by some that the Western Industry Institutions may get very important works on the cheap air, and to what extent is this properly policed, so that important works are fetching lower prices . Works are fetching lower rices . ,. , prices . You are right, it is important that the prices . You are right, it is important that the artist l prices . You are right, it is. Important that the artist gets certainly the validation that they need, and financial validation. It is a market though, and obviously, the prices are set by the market. We sold works in our sales in the past for over 1 million, nigerian artist, South African artist, and it is a market, and it reacts in the same way as any other market, but if that works are good, if they are valid, strong, technically adept, they will fetch the right prices and the institutions are very creamy dummy keen to acquire it. Not only is it Oil On Canvas and sculpture, it is photography as well, and african photography is a growing thing. We appreciate is a growing thing. We appreciate you is a growing thing. Up to two inches of rain in the wettest parts of scotland, but very few avoided a spell of lashing rain. A wind gust over 90mph off the south coast of england. Even where the rain held off until late in the day, the temperature only reached 14 celsius, and thats the lowest High Temperature the uk has had on the Early May Bank holiday, so that makes it the coldest Early May Bank holiday on record. Its not going to feel any warmer during tuesday. Itll still be windy, though not quite as windy, and therell be showers around as the area of low pressure that did for the Bank Holiday Weather pulls away into the north sea. The flow of air behind that, though, coming down from the north, that means temperatures below average for the time of year, feeling colder in the wind and the showers around of which there will be plenty from the word go though not much in the way of frost to start the day. That is going to change, though, as we go through the week ahead, so back to a risk of overnight frost. Gales close to these north sea coasts where its been windiest overnight in Southern England and south wales. Wont be as windy by the time we get to mid morning. There are areas with showers moving south, perhaps some longer spells of rain in parts of Northern England. Brightening up later in north east scotland. Not many showers in Southern England and south wales. The winds at their strongest along the north sea coasts and across parts of eastern england. Very gusty, but again easing later. Catch a shower, hail, thunder with temperatures like this, itll be wintry over the hills in scotland. Some places will not get into double figures. Now, on through tuesday evening and night, some showers continue to feed south. Its where it gets clearest overnight Northern England and parts of scotland were going to have frost going into wednesday morning, so it will be a cold start. And wednesday will be a day of sunshine and showers. Again, there will be a wintry flavour to these showers in places with hail and some snow on the higher hills in scotland, Northern England, perhaps into wales as well. Its not going to feel any warmer. Were back to the risk of overnight frost. A similar picture on thursday further showers, wintry on hills moving south and maybe a spell of Rain Flirting with the south coast of england, so were going to keep a close eye on that. Friday will be another chilly day of sunshine and showers and going into the weekend, here comes another area of low pressure. More wind and rain, though as the wind changes direction to a southerly, it may turn much warmerfor a time, especially in parts of england.
