We have been carrying on with diplomacy through the pandemic, but theres nothing quite as effective as face to face diplomacy, and thats why having a Covid Compliant face to Face G7 Meeting is so important. Sporting and Politicialfigures Have condemned the violence against police during a protest at Old Trafford yesterday. When you get fans breaking into stadiums, when you get fans hurting police officers, when you get fans smashing glass to get into the hospitality, then that is not the way to do it. The queen sends a message to the People Of Northern Ireland marking the countrys centenary, and praising the continued peace as a credit to its people, upon whose shoulders the future rests. And Coming Up, the First Non Socially Distanced Gig for over a year, Last Night in liverpool. Research from the Pilot Event in Sefton Park will help to show how concerts and festivals can safely take place again. Mps are urging the government to maintain restrictions on foreign holidays beyond the 17th of may. The All Party Parliamentary Group on coronavirus says importing new variants will result in more deaths and could lead to further lockdowns. The mps want ministers to discourage all international leisure travel. The government says robust Border Controls are in place to prevent the spread of covid. Thomas cook chief executive Alan French told us he expects most popular destinations, particularly in europe, to be open to Uk Holiday makers soon. From our Point Of View we want to take people on holiday, but we want to take them safely, and we want them to be confident they can have a great time when they are in destination and they can get back into the uk safely. I mean, that is our primary concern. So if there are issues in destination, we would expect that to be taken into account through the corridor process. But when we talk to customers, you know, you can almost smell the longing for the sea and the surf as they talk about their holidays, and increasingly, on the back of this lockdown people are going on holiday to celebrate some of the anniversaries and events they have not been able to do as a group through lockdown so there is areal need and want to go on holiday that needs to be balanced. But safety does need to be taken into account. The government will make an announcement this week on the possibility of holidays abroad, as our political Correspondentjonathan Blake explains. Were expect an announcement later this week from the government which will confirm whether International Travel can resume as it is hoped on the 17th of may. On the 17th of may. We will also get details of which countries will be in the red, amber or green list, under the Governments Traffic Light system which will determine whether people need to quarantine, either on an enforced basis or at home when they return from certain countries, or whether they will only need to have proof of a negative Covid Test when travelling in either direction. But there are warnings to the government this morning and mps on the Cross Party All Party Parliamentary Group on coronavirus urging caution. They say the government should not be encouraging people to go on holiday at this point until there are improvements in the systems that are in place. Their concerns relate to Airport Arrival halls, which they say have evidence could become Breeding Grounds for coronavirus with passengers from lots of destinations mixing on their return. Also potential fake Covid Test certificates which passengers could use to show that they are proving, having tested negative, falsely, for coronavirus. There is also the issue of the test and isolate system, which people are asked to adhere to on their return not being followed closely enough. The chair of that committee is seeing the large the government to take extreme caution in this area. I have to say, the Direction Of Travel is the government does i think hope to allow people to travel abroad as soon as it safely possible to do so. James cleverly saying this morning they want to move forward as quickly as possible at a pace that is safe. The European Commission has put out new guidance. What have they said . Interesting to see this from brussels, saying they plan to allow entry into the eu for leisure travel, Nonessential Travel for all persons coming from countries with a good epidemiological situation but also, all people who have received the last recommended dose of an eu authorised vaccine. Thats about travel into eu countries but of course, lots of eu countries are major Holiday Destinations for uk travellers. That could have a bearing on what the government announces later this week. Restrictions on the number of mourners who can attend a funeral in england are being lifted. The legal limit of 30 will be removed at the next stage of the easing of the lockdown, which is expected to be on the 17th of may. In scotland, up to 50 people can gatherfor a funeral, while there are no legal limits in wales and in Northern Ireland. Earlier, i spoke with deborah smith, from the National Association of funeral directors. It is based on the covid secure limited of the venues. For some smaller chapels and crematoriums there is really not much difference but for those bigger venues, they are able to accommodate more mourners, so families can have a bit more choice in terms of how many people they could have at the funeral. What is your view of impact of the past year on how people can grieve, the impact that has had on them . I think it has been an incredibly tough time for people who have lost loved ones, and notjust those in that immediate family. Something like 700,000 people died in the uk last year, so that is 700,000 immediate families who have been terribly affected by these restrictions and the pandemic, but actually we have wide circles of friends and colleagues and families in our lives today, and what has been heartbreaking is that families have had to turn round to people who are very close to the person who has died and say, im really sorry, you cant be there at the funeral. And that means grief has been interrupted for such a lot of people. So the more we can do to ease that suffering for people, the better. From today in wales two households will be allowed to meet indoors, and some families and friends will be able to hug for the first time in months. In the latest step out of lockdown, two households, plus another living on their own, will be able to form a bubble to meet and have contact indoors. Gyms, Swimming Pools and Fitness Facilities can also reopen as restrictions are eased. Indoor activities of up to 15 people, including Exercise Classes and swimming lessons, are given the green light. 0rganised childrens indoor activities like sports classes, scouts, Parent And Baby classes will also be able to restart Community Centres can reopen. Some areas will still be in lockdown until may 17th, including indoor play areas. Representatives of the worlds richest countries will meet face to face this week for the first time in two years. The G7 Meeting in london begins today, with attendees from canada, france, germany, italy, japan, the us and the uk. Representatives from the European Union will also attend, as well as from india, australia, japan, south korea, and south africa. The foreign Office Minister James Cleverly said that the first G7 Meeting in two years was hugely significant. We have been carrying on with diplomacy through the pandemic, but theres nothing quite as effective as face to face diplomacy, and thats why having a Covid Compliant face to Face G7 Meeting is so important. We will be discussing a number of long standing issues, including health, security, economy and environmental issues, but we will also be discussing two very important topics. One is girls education and the economic liberation of women around the world, but also how collectively we deal with actions of countries like china and russia, who perhaps threaten the democratic norms and values we hold so dear. You mentioned calling for more investment in girls education. How can you credibly call on other countries to do more, when the uk is cutting funding for projects in that area, as a result of cuts to the wider Aid Budget . Well, the economic circumstances that we find ourselves in as a direct result of coronavirus has meant that we had to make some difficult decisions with regard to our budget, but nevertheless, in both percentage terms and absolute terms, the uk remains one of the most generous aid donors in the world. And also, the merger of the foreign Office And Dfid was about making sure that our Development Work is reinforced and amplified by our diplomatic work and thats where the G7 Meeting is so important. Its an example of where we are coordinating and collaborating with international partners to deliver on these really important agenda. Ahead of the talks, britains foreign secretary, dominic raab, is meeting the us Secretary Of State anthony blinken. Its his first visit to London Sincejoe Biden became president. The pair will discuss Transatlantic Relations, as well as threats from russia, china and iran. 0ur diplomatic Editorjames Landale has this assessment of the meeting. They are significant because it is the first time theyve been able to sit down and just talk about uk us relations. They have met at other meetings sincejoe biden s administration came into office. This is the first time they can sit down and go through some of the nitty gritty stuff about Transatlantic Relations. The issues of the day will intrue, china, russia, ukraine, iran, the pandemic, Climate Change. Theres an awful lot to talk about. Inevitably, these things only get touched on for a bit. It will start to establish some of the tone of the meeting for the next two or three days. Essentially, the group of seven nations are getting together plus a lot of guests, is notjust the g7, south africa, india and others are coming, they want to work out, how do we revive the international order . How can we make sure it can better deal with authoritarian aggressors . How can it deal with pandemics of the future . How can it get together and agree what to do on Climate Change . Those are the broader themes we will see. Police in Manchester Have condemned the protests that led to the postponement of Manchester Uniteds Premier League Match against liverpool, calling them completely unacceptable. Two officers were injured when fans stormed the pitch. The mayor of greater manchester, andy burnham, has also condemned the violence. Our Sports Correspondent Joe Wilson reports. Chanting we want glazers out. The concourse outside Old Trafford where protesters were expected to congregate. To voice their continued opposition to the ownership of Manchester United by the glazer family. Some protesters soon decided to go further, and ultimately, onto the pitch itself. This was the scene at one of the most Famous Football Grounds in the world. That revered Manchester United pitch, the place of stirring feats of football, occupied. As clashes continued, police reported two injuries to officers, one slashed in the face by a broken bottle. Meanwhile, some of those who stayed peacefully outside, were leaving. As were speaking outside the ground, there are lots of fans actually on the pitch. Imean, what. Was there . They got through . What do you think about that . Its, its. It s a frustrating thing because obviously, as fans, we want the best for our club. Its been, from when we were young, watched it, its been magical, you know, history that weve had. And people like, get so annoyed with it. Well, they stayed. There was a Match Due to be played here, a match with direct implications for the outcome of the Premier League, supposed to happen here. The direct response from the Premier League was a statement. Im all for protesting, but not like that. You Cant Protest like that. Weve seen events at other football clubs, because theyre not happy. But when you get fans breaking into stadiums, when you get fans hurting police officers, smashing glass to get into the hospitality, then thats not the way to do it. Thats not acceptable. Well, for 16 years, supporters have opposed the glazers. For 16 years, theyve believed the family is taking money out of their club. Fan power has been reignited by recent opposition to the european super league. This anger runs deeper. Does it take something extreme for the glazers just to notice . Chanting united the Pitch Invaders widely condemned, dont represent all Manchester United Supporters. Far from it. But the landscape of English Football has changed. And these are the images viewed across the Premier Leagues global marketplace. Joe wilson, Bbc News in manchester. We can speak to pat nevin, former Chelsea And Scotland football player. Hejoins us now. What do you think the impact will be of this . Its what do you think the impact will be of this . ,. What do you think the impact will be of this . 3. ,. , what do you think the impact will be of this . ,. ,. ,. ,. , of this . Its a good question, because absolutely of this . Its a good question, because absolutely nobody. Of this . Its a good question, because absolutely nobody knows. Its incredible, its a total change what has happened. The last two or three weeks in football, much of which we did not see but there are certainly a lot of Pent Up anger and emotion. And a lot of aggression as well. Just with the european super League Nonsense that happened, the fans absolutely happily and rightly got their way and that was shelved. Hopefully never to be seen again. I think fans understand that they have to use that power in the right way and i have to say, all power to their elbows and i hope they do that. And it is using it in the right way. Certainly, listening to Alan Shearer talking, they will be listened to. They havent been for a long, long time. Ijust get the feeling things are changing now and they are making their voices heard. I suppose the question remains, is this the way to do it . Is going this far and the possible violence to property . If Manchester United are allowed to do this and risks acceptable behaviour, they should surely be doing it next week and we calf to and we capture, and should arsenal be able to do it . Should newcastle who do not like their owners, should they be able to do it . If all the games are cancelled, you might as well stop the leak now. Plenty of fans would say yes, thats what we want because the game has been sold and thats how they feel. The question i would raise, im not sure all Football Fans feel that way. I think we are in a position where we certainly have to make it heard that fans do not feel happy about the way the game has been going, but have to do it in a way thats acceptable but a lot of people dont agree with that. In The End, if a lot people dont agree with that. In The End. If a lot of people dont agree with that. In The End, if a lot of the people dont agree with that. In The End, if a lot of the fans people dont agree with that. In The End, if a lot of the fans dont people dont agree with that. In The End, if a lot of the fans dont like i end, if a lot of the fans dont like the glazer is, they are there, they do run The Club. Whats going to change that unless they decide that they have had enough but this has been going on for 16 years. Exactly. It could no been going on for 16 years. Exactly. It could go on been going on for 16 years. Exactly. It could go on for been going on for 16 years. Exactly. It could go on for another been going on for 16 years. Exactly. It could go on for another 16 been going on for 16 years. Exactly. It could go on for another 16 years. | it could go on for another 16 years. If there was anybody there for a buyout, that would be the perfect situation and i think i would possibly be brilliant for the glazers because i dont think they are interested other than the money involved. So it would suit them perfectly well. However, is there a way the fans will get ownership of The Club . Not being a massive cost . Its difficult to see how that actually works and how that methodology finishes, but they can live and hope. I think a lot of united fans, whatever it look, feel, is that if you do sell to someone else, how do you no theyre not going to do the same, similar, possibly worse . Although Man United Fans will tell you they cant imagine that being the case. But you could, because the glazers have allowed a lot of money to be spent on transfers, even though most of that, if not all of that, in fact, all of that, has been used with leveraged debt and put The Club into debt, so they wish for something different. What that is, its not easy to tell. So different. What that is, its not easy to tell easy to tell. So that debt, currently easy to tell. So that debt, currently stands easy to tell. So that debt, currently stands at easy to tell. So that debt, currently stands at £455 l easy to tell. So that debt, currently stands at £455 million according to The Clubs latest accounts, which were just released last month. Does that mean The Club is not. That anyone else would want to come in and actually take it on . ,. ,. , ~. , on . They would take it for 455 million. Thats on . They would take it for 455 million. Thats not on . They would take it for 455 million. Thats not what on . They would take it for 455| million. Thats not what theyre going to get it or because the glazers are businessmen, so they will hold out for more than that. Evenif will hold out for more than that. Even if the pushing was much harder thanit even if the pushing was much harder than it isjust even if the pushing was much harder than it is just now from some of the united fans particularly angry, i still cannot see the glazers walking away unless that asset becomes less valuable. I did well, for what they are saying just now, but that much less valuable that it becomes affordable to the billions asking for just affordable to the billions asking forjust now . Its hard to see that. But we are in a different, weird, changing world and you just never know. Who thought to weeks ago there was a possibility of a super league and these teens walking away . Nobody thought that, so we are in a weird and different world where the fans are certainly flexing their muscles, trying to have an effect on the way clubs are run and in The End, if it turns up with fans getting say on the board and more information and not been kept in the dark, i have to say, i am one of the people heavily on side with that and with the fact that football, to some degree, is losing its hold but you have to remember the other side. Those who want to go back to the good old days, remembersome want to go back to the good old days, remember some bad things were in there as well. In there as well. Thank you very much, in there as well. Thank you very much. Pat in there as well. Thank you very much, pat nevin. In there as well. Thank you very much, pat nevin. Pleasure. Were going to start with more on this developing story at Manchester United, after fans protested at Old Trafford yesterday. In an open letter to the glazer family, the Manchester United Supporters trust has called on them to rebalance the Ownership Structure in favour of supporters. The group also calls for a Share Scheme that is accessible to all and wants shares with the same Voting Rights as those held by the glazers. Around 200 united fans invaded Old Trafford to register their anger at The Clubs owners yesterday, causing their Premier League game against liverpool to be postponed. Well before the letter was published, Ian Stirling from the Manchester United Supporters trust spoke to us this morning. We support peaceful protest, but what needs to happen is the Government Need to put this review into place and put their findings into legislation very, very quickly. Thats whats going to deliver the Real Change and thats what were going Real Change and thats what were going to Real Change and thats what were going to continue to work on. So one question now is when can the match be re arranged for. So this is united and liverpools combined schedules until The End of the season and, as you can see, its already pretty tightly packed. Theres 3 games in 3 days next week, before another 3 the week after, all of those already scheduled in the Premier League. Both clubs play on the 19th of may, before the final day of the season on the 23rd, when every team in the league plays at the same time. So, as you can see, theres not much room for it to fit in. Staying with football, tottenhams hopes of making next seasons Champions League are still alive after a 4 0 win over sheffield united. Gareth bale was in outstanding form at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. He scored a hat trick, with son Heung Min adding the fourth late on. The result puts spurs up to fifth and afterwards bale said the team are playing football the tottenham way, some interpreting that as a bit of a dig at former managerjose mourinho. And there was a win for tottenhams north London Rivals arsenal. Goals from Mohammed Elneny and this one from Pierre Emerick Aubameyang setting the gunners up nicely for the second leg of their crucial Europa League Semi Final against villarreal on thursday. A match between the Kolkata Knight riders and royal challengers bangalore, in crickets indian Premier League, has been postponed after 2 players contracted coronavirus. He finished last Nights Evening Session with a 10 frames to 7 lead over shaun murphy. The final resumes at one oclock and you can follow all the action on bbc two. Selby looks for a fourth World Title as for murphy, hes after his first for 16 years. Lewis hamilton, once again, showed why hes a 7 time formula one World Champion with a remarkable drive in the algarve to win the portuguese grand prix. He had to to use all of his experience to over take rival max verstappen, and then hunt down Team Mate Valterri bottas. The victory extends hamiltons lead in the Drivers Championship to 8 points after 3 races. I lost out to max at the restart, which was a. Mistake from my side. But i dont feel bad about it, actually, because i fixed it. But then overcoming obstacles and overtaking these two guys, its a good feeling. And Geraint Thomas has won his first race since the 2018 tour de france. The welshman started the final Time Trial of the Tour Of Romandie in switzerland in second place. He finished third in the stage, but that was enough to take the overall victory almost half a minute ahead of his nearest rival. And thats all the sport for now, joanna. Ill have more throughout the afternoon. Nhs workers at wales largest hospital are Planting Trees to offset the Carbon Emissions from treating covid patients in their intensive Care Unit. We dont necessarily encourage people to come to ask exclusively to offset. The benefits of trees are many, and various. Carbon offsetting is one of them but you can measure fairly complicated calculator that measures the volume of carbon, the biomass of the tree, equates to a measure of carbon which you can use to offset. Jack and the hospital have not explicitly asked us to do that we will measure the carbon at five years, so is a Verification Process that takes place after five years. And we will do that. Then you can credit that as a carbon offset. That bit is complicated, but less complicated and more exciting is the change that the planting of trees brings about the landscape. And that includes reducing air pollution, improved soil quality, some point in the trees life, sustainable timber. Theyve arrested four men accused of running the network, called boystown, which was accessed on the dark net by Hundreds Of Thousands of users. The investigation involved police in the netherlands, sweden, australia, the us and canada. 0ur Correspondent in Berlin Damien Mcguiness has more. Police are describing this as a major step forward in the fight against Child Pornography. This was a huge international collaboration between officials from, as you say, all over the world and it is shocking what police have uncovered, because you are talking about 400,000 users worldwide exchanging, looking at images, videos of at times very young children, including toddlers. Officials say that this shows the extent of the problem. Four men between the age of 40 and 64 have now been tracked down. Three of them, they are all german citizens, three of them are in germany, the other is in paraguay, their homes have been searched. Last month, a couple of weeks ago, they were detained and the hope is that now that this has shut down and now that users as well are being tracked down, it shows, officials say, that people who use this sort of, or look at this sort of Pornography Or Share it are not safe from Investigation And Prosecution and that is really the signal that is being sent out here. It is the only positive thing coming out of this story, the fact that these perpetrators have been tracked down. Three of the men are accused of running the site and a fourth man in hamburg, a 64 year old, is accused of being one of its most active users, having exchanged and looked at more than 3500 images or postings. So it is a chilling story, but at least the one positive thing is that this site has been shut down and it shows that the collaboration between officials from all over the world can be effective in fighting against Child Pornography. A hundred years ago, a law came into force which set up a parliament in belfast, created a border and established Northern Ireland. In a message to its people today, the queen said the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on our togetherness and our diversity. And Borisjohnson Has said the Uk Government would continue to showcase all The Brilliant Things that Northern Ireland contributes to the rest of the uk. Chris page reports. These are the pictures Northern Ireland wants to be best known for a place of friendly cities and stunning seaside scenery. But it has a history which hurts. Its still recovering from a conflict which lasted for 30 years, until the late 1990s. There was violence, too, at the time of Northern Irelands birth, sectarian murder across the island of ireland. The southern 26 counties went to war with britain to achieve independence, but a majority in the north eastern six counties wanted to stay in the uk. And thats what happened. Today is one of a series of anniversaries. Its notjust the start of Northern Ireland as we know it. Its the start of the united kingdom as we know it. And the united kingdom is stronger and better because of all the constituent parts, and Northern Ireland plays a huge part in that. Unionists view this is the centenary of the state they strongly value. But for people who identify as irish, its the anniversary of the partition of ireland, a source of great injustice. The creation of a Brexit Trade Border with the rest of the uk has again sharpened political divisions. I think it is possible for us to deal with the past. Yeah. There would be little, some pain, but generously, ethically, i think it is possible for us to deal with the present, given even our present difficulties. I think they should be ironed out. They can be. Events to mark the centenary have been restricted so far due to the pandemic, but that doesnt make 2021 any less significant here. Chris page, Bbc News, belfast. Were just a few days away from the local elections, with different polls opening depending on where you live. 0ur Correspondent Lewis Goodall has been taking a look at whats happening where. There is a Bumper Crop of elections Coming Up on May The 6th in england, scotland and wales. In fact, they are the biggest set of elections, the biggest test, democratic test, for the three major parties this side of the next general election, so lets have a look at some of the contests taking place across the country. For a start, we have 143 different English Councils up for election. 5000 seats up for election. In some places, a third of the chamber, in some Places Half of the chamber, in some places all of the chamber, in some places two thirds of the chamber of course, because some of those seats are holdovers from councils which should have been elected in 2020 but were not because of the pandemic. 129 msps in the Scottish Parliament in holyrood. All 60 members of the welsh senedd election. We have seen what huge powers those bodies have in scotland and wales during the pandemic, so big elections there. In england as well, police and crime commissioners up for re election. 39 of them, they control Police Budgets and strategy in the area. 29 seats for the London Assembly and the London Mayoralty as well as a whole suite of another elected mayors, 13 of them. So how are these elections conducted . What do you do when you get in the Voting Booth . Might be a bit more complicated than you think, it depends where you live and what you are voting on. In scotland and wales, you get two votes, both your local Constituency Member and then another vote for the regional list. This vote effectively helps parties which do not do so well in the local constituencies do well overall in the election, tops their representation up, gives them extra seats, makes the overall system more proportionate. That is different of course if you are living in England And Voting in english local councils. There, it is our old friend, it is first past the post. It is one voter, one candidate, one vote, whichever candidate gets one more vote than all the other candidates, they are elected. Whichever party controls more than 50 of the seats in the local chamber, they control the local council and if theyre not able to get more than 50 of the seats, then they have to form a coalition with another party. And then it is different again if you are voting in the english mayoral elections or the police and crime co there, there is something called the supplementary vote system. Voters get two preferences. If no candidate gets over 50 of the vote then the other candidates are eliminated one by one and the preferences of those voters are redistributed until you get over 50 of the vote for one candidate and hey presto, you have got a mayor, you have an english local police and crime commissioner, but of course the one thing that unites all of these elections is the fact that they are taking place in very, very different circumstances than we might expect, certainly different from the halcyon days back in the 1950s. Here this is taking place in a global pandemic. Very different sets of elections, covid secure local voting stations, voters are even being asked to bring their own pencil. Shielders asked to vote by post. We just cannot know what affect all of that is going to have on turnout. Could be much lower, could be much higher if lots of people choose to vote by post who would not normally do so and therefore this is a very unpredictable set of elections and we cannot know what power they are going to have in order to give us wider insight into trends that are going on into our politics more generally.
