Our top story A New Covid Testing Scheme could prevent some people from having to self isolate if theyve been in contact with someone who tests positive for coronavirus. A trial, beginning next week in england, will ask close contacts to take a test every morning for seven days instead. The Health Secretary, matt hancock, says this will allow people to carry on working. Our Health Correspondent jim reed has more. Being contacted by test and trace and told to self isolate currently means this. Ten days in quarantine at home if you are the contact of somebody who has tested positive. Whether many people really stay in the house the whole time is unclear. Some estimates put the number of close contacts to complete the full quarantine period as low as one in ten. So the government is trialing these as a possible alternative. In a new study which starts next week, up a new study which starts next week, up to 40,000 Contacts Cases in england will be asked to take a rapid Lateral Flow Test every morning for several days. The result comes back in 30 minutes. If it is negative they can go about their lives as usual, instead of having to quarantine at home. The Health Secretary, matt hancock, said the pilot scheme could help shift the dial by offering a vile viable alternative to Self Observation which would allow people to carry on going to work and living their lives. But the accuracy of Lateral Flow Kits has been criticised by some scientists. 0thers Flow Kits has been criticised by some scientists. Others say about maybe a place for this kind of testing but only if it is backed by improved Financial Support for those who do record a positive result. There are absolutely are. The Justice Ministry has already ordered an investigation, and there are now calls for a National Commission of enquiry. Unfortunately, the blame game is already under way, but there are definitely questions. One of the biggest questions is why there was no one body or State Organisation in charge of oversight, the authority was dispersed among several civilian bodies and organisations. And these were from different communities, and they were in charge of parts of the ceremonies. And police were kind of expected to co ordinate between these organisational bodies, so, i think there has to be a big enquiry into, when the problems were known, nothing was really done until unfortunately, it was too late. At the other end of the table, brighton have all but secured premier League Football for another season they beat leeds 2 0 Danny Welbeck with their second a brilliant solo effort. The win moves brighton up to 14th and fulham, still deep in trouble after they were beaten 2 0 by chelsea. Kai havertz scored both of the goals to give his side a boost in their hunt for a Champions League place. This team is a good side and of course we have our faults. Of course we have fallen short. There are four games left and with that performance, that effort, and the way we played today, do i believe we can win four games . Yeah, of course, i honestly do, i honestly do. And thats what we got to do, steve. We have no alternative and we only have four games. And evertons hopes of finishing in the top four took a blow as they were beaten 2 1 by aston villa. Anwar el ghazi with a superb second half winner. Norwich city will be returning to the Premier League next season. They beat reading yesterday to seal the championship title. They were already promoted, but the win seals a second championship win in three seasons. Down at the bottom, though, things are getting very tight indeed. Wayne rooneys derby county suffering a sixth straight defeat. They now play Sheffield Wednesday on the final day next saturday, knowing either side, or both, could be relegated. The huge match, that one. That could be a huge match, that one. Aberdeen have secured European Football for next season. A 2 1victory over livingston guaranteed them a top four Scottish Premiership finish. Ryan hedges scored their second meaning aberdeen will be in the Europa Conference League next term. Now, away from the football. It was one of the most eagerly anticipated fights in womens boxing and last night the bout between katie taylor and Natasha Jonas certainly did not disappoint. The pair, who fought as amateurs back at the london 2012 olympics, went ten very even rounds but Katie Taylorjust managed to cling on to maintain her undefeated record and remain as the undisputed World Lightweight champion. Lewis hamilton was hoping for his 100th Pole Position but he was pipped to the front by his mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas for this afternoons portuguese grand prix. Red bulls Max Verstappen will start third on the grid, thanks to the windy conditions at portimao. The dutchman had set a time fast enough for Pole Position, but was blown off course and had his time deleted in the end. Valtteri bottas went fastest, just a fraction of a second quicker than championship leader hamilton. Qualifying wasnt the greatest, still, but really greatjob that we were front row. And i think tomorrow were front row. And i think tomorrow we should be, hopefully as a calmer day wind ways and we have a really good race. Its the 1000 guineas at newmarket this afternoon and if the race is anything like yesterdays 2000 guineas it will be a real treat. It was won by poetic flair, in the white, at 16 1 who just beat master of the seas, in a photo finish. The result also proved age is no barrier in racing. Jockey Kevin Manning is 54, while the owner, breeder and trainer of poetic flair, jim bolger, is 79. The World Snooker championship final gets underway later today in front of a capacity crowd in sheffield. The 2005 winner shaun murphy pulled off a stunning comeback to beat kyren wilson in his semi final. He won 8 frames in a row against wilson, who lost in last years final to go from 12 9 down to win17 12. Murphy is now through to his fourth World Championship final and his first since 2015. Id be struggling to find a time from, you know, so far behind in a match where i have played as well as tonight. And, no one is more shocked than me, you know in fact, a terrible run here in the last few years and playing in that very arena and making a game that very easy at times and making it look unquestionably the most difficult game in the world. So i think when you are out there it can be brutal or it can be the best place in the world. And murphy will take on the three time World Champion mark selby. This outrageous piece of good fortune helped him eventually beat Stuart Bingham in an epic match by 17 frames to 15. You have got to bejoking. And tom daley and matty lee won gold at divings world cup injapan. Its an official test event for the Tokyo Olympics and the first competition for 14 months for the pair, who have already qualified for the games. They finished clear of mexico in second and canada in third to take gold. Times daily back on top of the podium. Tom daley. And there was agony for Geraint Thomas who was denied victory on the fourth stage of the tour of romandy after crashing within metres of the finish line. He was on course to take the overall lead even if he hadnt won the stage, but the tricky conditions in switzerland took him by surprise. Thomas eventually finished third and remains second overall ahead of todays final stage. It looked a nasty crash, but he has tweeted so say hes 0k. Well what a shocker of a final 100 i had no feeling in my hands so when i tried to change gear, ijust lost my grip on the bars. Im all good though, he says. I was watching that. People may not need to self isolate if they have been in close contact with somebody who tests positive for coronavirus if a new trial is successful. The scheme, which begins next week in england, will ask people to take a test every morning for seven days. Health secretary matt hancock says it will allow people to carry on working, but some scientists have questioned the accuracy of Lateral Flow Tests. 5000 people will attend a Music Festival in liverpool today as part of the governments pilot scheme for live events. Crowds will gather to watch headline act blossoms in sefton park without having to socially distance or where face coverings. Scientists will be monitoring the gig and those with a ticket will have to provide a negative covid test to enter. A national day of mourning is taking place in israel following fridays deadly crush at a jewish pilgrimage. 45 men and boys died after being trapped in a narrow walkway during the festival attended by up to 100,000 mostly ultraorthodox dues. Questions have been raised about the management of crowds in the festival. Oscar winning actress Olivia Dukakis has died at the age of 89. She was known for roles in films such as Steel Magnolias and moon struck. The part that on her a best supporting Actress Academy award. Sure, hip later her on screen daughter, pay tribute, calling Olympia Dukakis an amazing actress. Cher, who played. Now its time for three days that shook football, a look behind the scenes of a chaotic three days in European Football, as a proposed super league collapsed after a wall of opposition. If this were to happen, it has potential to end the club game as we know it. Its not right what theyre trying to do. Its not competitive. Its a closed shop. There was quite unanimous sadness, anger, disgust at the events of the last three days. For people, greedy people, to come in and treat it like their own personal hedge fund is disgusting. Its disgraceful, its disgusting, and i will say three strong words enough is enough. Chanting. Its not a sport if the success is already guaranteed. I its not a sport, and it i doesnt matter if you lose. I can only give my personal opinion, and i dont like it one bit and hopefully it doesnt happen. The ramifications of this, i think, well be talking about in years to come. And for inter milan, still the european champions. Since the middle of the last century, European Footballs been based on a principle that anyone can be king, the idea that the seats at the top table are for guests and cant be permanently reserved, that you can work your way up through the divisions and play in europe or fall back down the other way, no guarantees. But business likes guarantees. At some of the biggest clubs, the pandemic meant and already hefty overdrafts grew still more enormous, they were looking for something to rely on, even if that meant revolution. Well, i think for many years now, the wealthiest, biggest clubs in europe have used the threat of a breakaway, a super league, as a negotiating tactic. Youve had conversations about reform of the Champions League and then conversations about breaking away from the Champions League involving the same people at the same times. What was different this time, however, was that they meant business. But for all the leaks and whispers about a breakaway, when the european governing body, uefa, announced it had agreed a new format for its flagship Champions League, it seemed it had the big clubs on board. The plans were due to be announced on monday the 19th of april. Very few knew of the impending storm. The super league was about to be born. Well, sunday morning, i got this tip that actually this was serious, i that this is actually i going to be happening. I then got that sort of second i sourced and was able to write it online sunday lunchtime. So, i do think its good to bei a really big story for football. What i had absolutely no idea about was that this i was going to become a sort i of International Political incident. The news spread fast. There were spectators back at wembley that day for the fa cup semifinal, but that was no longer footballs biggest story. Theres been some reports filtering through this afternoon that 12 of europes top football clubs, including six english sides. The reaction to this story about a proposed European Super League. Uefa figures are said to be furious that 12| major European Clubs, including the big i six from england. It would distort, it would warp the competitive balance of the league. We already know that those clubs have a major built in advantage because they qualify for champions League Football, they have more fans than many of the other clubs, bigger matchday revenue, bigger commercial income. You allow them to take part in this new competition, which we understood would generate for them hundreds of millions of pounds it was financed by an Investment Bank as we knew, they had huge aspirations to sign multi billion pound deals with broadcasters in the future it would accentuate, reinforce that advantage even more. The plan was that six english clubs arsenal, chelsea, liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur would join six other clubs including the likes of real madrid, barcelona and juventus to form a super league, which would take place in mid week, when current european competitions are held. The original 12 would be joined by three other permanent members. Theyd have a place every season, however they performed, for the next 23 years. The remaining five teams would qualify every year. This was a challenge to the whole order of football in europe. It was so radical. What was going to happen was going to transform the game so fundamentally, and it was going to try to bring in an american type Closed System into something thats the complete opposite. Well, it was going to destroy the beautiful game as we know it. And i think it was the speed, the scale and the audacity i of what was announced, that there was a bit of l an intake of breath. The american owners, because the success of the franchise model in the nfl, i think theyve looked at it and people like john henry and joel glazer have said, well, hold on, explain this thing to me where i buy i a club, but its possible that that i club might not be in this competition next year . I how does that work . I think youve made a bit of a mistake, and werel here to fix this for you. This was the end of i the sport as we knew it. By sunday evening, the counterattack had begun. Uefa and the three domestic leads involved released a punchy statement, saying they were. They threatened to ban those clubs involved from their competitions and also said. Now the opposition were on the pitch before the rebel 12. The hours ticked on and still no confirmation that the super league was a reality. It was gone 11pm in the uk before each club released a statement confirming their plan. And a website appeared promising the best clubs, the biggest players every week. It also said the huge amounts of money involved would allow them to give billions of pounds back to the game, but still no voices backed the words. It began to unravel virtually from the moment of its inception because it became clear that there was no plan. Because if you have a plan, Something Like that comes into the public domain, you must be able to execute something, you must be able to get get your messages out. Liverpool put on their twitter feed the official statement that they were joining the super league this was ten past 11pm at night or something. And within ten minutes, there was 5000 replies, and every single one, as far as i could see, was you bunch of unprintable things. I think it was really almost. It was almost a reflex response. We just hit the phones, and we got in touch with phone reps from all the other clubs because we knew we had to stop this. The headlines for you at 6 oclock this morning. Football divided as six premier clubs confirm theylljoin a breakaway European Super League. The headlines for you at 6 oclock this morning. Football divided as six premier clubs confirm theylljoin a breakaway European Super League. The organisers say it will bring more money into the game, but the reaction from fans, politicians and many players has been furious. It will have massive ramifications on our game in this country. I it will wreck the Pyramid System that has been so important to local football clubs, i to communities and teams. And it takes out the competition. This is all about, right, i dont care about anybody else but my pockets. Lets get some more money in there, and well be ok. Forget them, forget the players, forget the staff, forget the fans, this is about me who wants more money. I think its bang out of order. The club has completely neglected its fans, everything that it stands for to gain money from this greedy scheme. Itsjust absolute chaos, really. And itsjust, itsjust. You know, its a race to the bottom, in my opinion. Its upsetting. Supporters trusts, pundits, politicians, almost everyone who was asked came out against the super league, but at this stage they had only statements. Those behind the plans were acting. On Monday Morning in madrid, they filed Legal Paperwork to try and protect the breakaway clubs from sanctions against them. An hour afterwards, the rebel 12 left the European Clubs association, which represents professional clubs throughout europe and which Andrea Agnelli ofjuventus had been chairman of. In case it was not already clear, this was serious. The reason im told that they were so confident and talking to people close to the Super League Clubs at the time, they seemed very bullish about their prospects was that they felt that they were on the right side of the law. So, for those against the plan, outrage wouldnt be enough. In footballs, tactics are crucial. We started talking to the contacts weve got at the dcms, in the Major Political parties, in the football governing bodies, because of course this was a situation where, you know, there were many strange alliances formed. Weve often sat across the table from Senior Premier League executives and argued about things like Ticket Pricing and Kick Off Times for broadcast live games, all sorts of things. And now, of course, this was a threat to the Premier League as well. Meanwhile, the calm waters of lake geneva belied the storm inside uefas headquarters in nyon, switzerland. They were announcing their plans for a revamped Champions League, something the big clubs had been asking for. Among the huge narratives of business, sport and culture, was this also a story of betrayal . I spoke with the ceo, or whatever he is, i of Manchester United, i ed woodward, on thursday. He called me, he says, great reforms, i fully support it. I spoke with agnelli, i think, 20 times in the last days, i the last time on saturday. When i said, i hear rumours about a super league, and he says, no. This is a lie dont believe it. I will call you back in one hour. And he turned off the phone. So, its hard to believe the level of immorality of some people. I ceferin and agnelli share close family ties. This was personal as well as political. Not every big club had rallied to the rebel flag. In germany, where fans have voting rights, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund said they were strongly opposed. And Paris Saint Germain in france never defected. Back in england, opposition moved from tweets and websites to banners a more visible, audible anger. Sometimes footballs not about winning, its about trying, you getting there. But they want that ruined. They want it ruined all because of money, and its disgraceful, its disgusting. And i will say three strong words enough is enough. While on zoom calls in westminster and in the homes of fans representatives like martin cloake, the resistance was organising. I think it was anger and determination. I mean, you know, were living in extraordinary times anyway without even more Extraordinary Events unfolding as they have over the last few days. You know, were living in an era where people are talking about, you know, the people taking more control, if you like. And there was a popular feeling that this was the wrong thing to do. But the government were absolutely serious when they said, what oliver dowden, the sports minister, said in the commons, that they saw this as a threat to a fundamental institution in this country and they were going to stop it. And i think that was the turning point. We will put everything on the table to prevent this from happening. I we are examining every option from Governance Reform To Competition Law and mechanisms i that allow football to take place. I put simply, we will be reviewing| everything the government does to support these clubs to play. We know that there are members across this house who have for the past 11 years of conservative led governments supported reform. So, its time, madam deputy speaker, for the government to get off the subs bench and show some leadership on the pitch because we need reform of football. You know, the government had a significant role. Boris johnson was holding crisis meetings. Government were sort of threatening to impose restrictions on work permits of players, talking about sort of luxury taxes, windfall taxes. One significant factor was their actual supporters. I mean, im sure, if it had continued, when fans returned, wed have seen boycotts, wed have seen huge protests. Wed already seen protests when there werent fans back. The first opportunity to do that was ahead of the evening Premier League game between leeds united and one of the six rebels, liverpool. There were fans of both sides and other english clubs at the protest, and there was anger in the air. Say no to the super league its the one profession in the world where you can come from nothing and be an absolute world beater, and for people, greedy people, to just come in and treat it like their own personal hedge fund is disgusting, so we wanted to make a stand. Its going to ruin everyones dream, everyones game and its just ridiculous. Liverpools manager, jurgen klopp, said before the match, his players hadnt been told in advance about the new competition. After the game, a 1 1 draw, james milner was asked about it. I can only give my personal opinion, and i dont like it one bit and hopefully it doesnt happen. But liverpools owner, john w henry, still hadnt said anything. In fact, by monday night, the super league silence was deafening. There had to be a way of articulating what was happening, ideally from all of the clubs, but certainly in english to the english media. And that had to be done immediately. And in the end, real madrid president Florentino Perez did an interview with a little watched digital channel in spain in the middle of the night. The only message that appeared to come from that was that he wanted to have shorter matches, which was fairly disastrous pr. Translation television needs to change. We need to adapt to i the times were living in. The first thing we should do is analyse why 40 of young people, if young people find matches too i long, it may be because they are not interesting enough or maybe we might have to make the football matches shorter. Perez, the chairman of the new league, claimed it would save football, not to mention financially troubled real madrid. But it would soon become clear the super league itself was in big trouble. Its 6 oclock on tuesday the 20th of april. Good morning. The Prime Minister will hold talks with senior figures in football this morning as the row over the European Super League intensifies. 14 more clubs will meet today to consider their response. I the criticism of the super league continues, including from Prince William, who is president of the football association. Its not correct. Its not right what theyre trying to do. Its not competitive. Its a closed shop. You can hear and see and feel the anger from almost everyone in football. By Tuesday Morning, the organisers of the super league were up against a former england captain, a future king, the Prime Minister, the leader of the opposition, the european and World Football authorities and it seemed british football fans en masse. Under that pressure, we saw the first signs of cracks. Tuesday morning, a colleague of mine, matt norton, took a call saying that he had heard that two clubs were having second thoughts. I spoke to a couple of people within football at a decent level who suggested to me that Manchester City and chelsea were having second thoughts. They were reconsidering their commitment. When i was told that there were doubters on Tuesday Morning, i spoke to someone whos involved in the super league, and they said, no, no, no, right at the very top, theyre all still involved. Theyre all still keen on it. Despite that, the mood was definitely changing, and uefa had gone from raging to persuading. To the english clubs, mainly, come to your senses. Not out of love for football, because i imagine some i of you dont have much of that. But out of respect for those who bleed themselves dry i so that they can go to the stadium to support their team and want i the dream to be kept alive. Meanwhile, back in england, representatives from the 14 Premier League clubs not on the guest list were meeting to discuss tactics. Everton had earlier led their attack on the super league six. In a statement, they condemned the preposterous arrogance of those involved. Aston villa called it a sinister scheme. Their chief executive, christian purslow, was in the Premier League meeting. The board made it quite clear that they are contemplating the most severe of sanctions against these six clubs because they have behaved in a way which self evidently damages the league as a whole and their 14 fellow shareholders. All i can say is that there was quite unanimous sadness, anger, disgust at the events of the last three days amongst every single one of those 14 clubs. Borisjohnson and the culture secretary, oliver dowden, were holding a zoom call with supporters groups, while the labour leader, sir keir starmer, did the same, offering to help them rise up against the super league. There was talk of a legislative bomb to stop the rebel six breaking away. Afterjames milner s interview the night before, more and more players made their opinions clear. Marcus rashford, one of the most influential young men in the country, tweeted this photo with sir matt busby s quote. And Manchester Citys manager, Pep Guardiola, regarded by many as the best in the world, had his say. Its not a sport when the relation between the effort and the success, the effort and reward doesnt exist, dont exist. So, its not a sport. So, its not a sport if the success is already guaranteed. Its not a sport, and it doesnt matter if you lose. At Stamford Bridge in london, chelsea fans were beginning to gather ahead of their teams match against brighton hove albion. They were keen to make their feelings known. Its grown in number to around about 1,000 fans. Theyre currently on the move, i moving from the stamford gate to another gate outside Stamford Bridge we havent seen the team buses arrive yet. In the end, the former chelsea goalkeeper, petr cech, had to come out to try and get the buses into the stadium. Kick off was delayed. The super league story was hurtling to a conclusion. Just some Breaking News before we go here on sportsday because the bbc sports editor, dan roan, hasjust been in touch to tell us that we understand that chelsea are preparing documentation to request withdrawing from the European Super League. So, that is really significant news. Cheering when the phone call did come through, it was out of the blue, but it was from someone i trusted. You know, i knew then that this wasnt quite what it seemed. Ijust felt without chelsea, i think Manchester City will go, too. So, as we went on air, i i had absolutely no idea that the next 45 minutes, everything that we had i planned was gone. One more update for you from our sports editor, dan roan, confirmation, our understanding is that Manchester City have withdrawn from the European Super League. It was almost like every ten minutes or so, it was like watching a House Of Cards fall down. I think as one went, there was going to be a Domino Effect because it then became unsustainable. It was a collapse, and it was among the most dramatic evenings of reporting i can ever recall. The sheer drama, the intensity, the potential ramifications i and the engagement, really, that this story provoked. I i found that if i didnt check my e mail for 90 seconds, then i was out of date. And i was getting Text Messages from people saying, is the Ed Woodward Story true . Whats the Ed Woodward Story . If you havent had quite enough Breaking News for one evening on five live sport, ed woodward is going to stand down from his position as Executive Vice Chairman of Manchester United, and our understanding is that it is not related to the super league. And then i got a call again from a contact at half past 10pm on tuesday night to say, within 20 minutes, well all be out. And i reported that. Byjust after 11pm that night, almost exactly three days after they announced they were joining it, all six english teams involved in the super league confirmed they were leaving it. The revolution was over. Now for the repercussions. I want to apologise to all the fans, supporters of liverpool football. Club for the disruption i caused over the past 48 hours. The other owners, or their representatives, joined john w henry in offering apologies or statements of regret, but not everyone was convinced. A lot of the apologies that have come out have been more of a kind of were really sorry you didnt understand why we were right rather than wed got it wrong. The remaining italian and spanish Super League Clubs admitted defeat for now, but this wouldnt be the end of the matter. The fall of the super league hadnt extinguished the emotions it had provoked. The anger was still there. The owners were still there. We want our arsenal back im guessing in their minds, i this was just a monday evening Tuesday Morning type of thing, we said its cancelled, people are going i to forget about it. Its the weekend now, its friday, and fans are still adamant to let their voices be heard. So, the fact that fans are not i backing down is great because that gives them a reason to think, right, this is not going i to be an easy ride. Some demanded the rebels be punished and held accountable for their actions, so had the big six shrunk a little in the storm . The strange and ironic thing is that actually theyve lost so much power now, so much goodwill, so much respect that theyre in a far, far worse position than they were a week ago. Theyve always had this final bargaining chip, we will break away and set up a super league. They cant do that any more. People think theyve won battles. People are thinking that theyve. Theyve assumed status that they didnt have before. We have to remember that those 12 clubs are by and large the most famous clubs, the most well supported clubs in European Football. The idea that anything can happen long term without those clubs being on board with it, i think, is fanciful. Its far easier to know what wont be happening than what will. The government has launched a review of english football which will consider whether supporters should be given a say on decisions their clubs take. Some whove been campaigning for change in football believe this is their moment. There is a chance now because government is clearly energised, as are the football. Authorties and certainly the fans, theyre all energised i to actually, first of all, prevent this happening again, i but, in a sense more importantly, to really start to get some balance and real change into the game. I i am personally genuinely convinced that the will for change is there, and i think this is a watershed moment for english football, for European Football. What i think is going to be fascinating now is where the story goes because there are so many more conversations to be had now. The ramifications of this, i think, well be talking about in years to come. This really cut through. It was a wake up moment, i think, for anyone who cares about our National Sport, about what its become and what it might become in the future. The realfeeling, ithink, here was that the future | of the National Sport as we know. It was on the line, it was at stake. And the reaction that it provoked, this story, i was absolutely fascinating. Very exciting to cover, and i think the ramifications of it are going to extend well into the future. To support these clubs to play. Good morning. Heavy and persistent rain sweeping across the uk, with strong winds as well. All the details coming up. Its sunday, the 2nd of may. Our top story A New Covid Testing Scheme could prevent some people from having to self isolate if theyve been in contact with someone who tests positive for coronavirus. A trial beginning next week in england will ask close contacts to take a test every morning for seven days instead. The Health Secretary, matt hancock, says this will allow people to carry on working. Our Health Correspondent jim reed has more. Being contacted by test and trace and told to self isolate currently means this ten days in quarantine at home if you are the contact of somebody whos tested positive. Whether many people really stay in their house the whole time is unclear some estimates put the number of close contacts who complete the full quarantine period as low as one in 10 so the government is trialling these as a possible alternative. In a new study, which starts next week, up to 40,000 Contact Cases in england will be asked to take a rapid Lateral Flow Test every morning for seven days. The result comes back in 30 minutes. If its negative, they can go about their lives as usual, instead of having to quarantine at home. The Health Secretary matt hancock said the pilot scheme could help shift the dial by offering a viable alternative to Self Isolation that would allow people to carry on going to work and living their lives. But the accuracy of Lateral Flow Kits has been criticised by some scientists. Others say there may be a place for this kind of testing, but only if its backed by improved Financial Support for those who do record a positive result. Jim reed, bbc news. 5,000 people will attend a Music Festival in liverpool today as part of the governments pilot scheme for live events. People may not need to self isolate after coming into close contact with someone who has covid, if a new trial is successful. The scheme will see people given daily Lateral Flow Tests for a week. If they get negative results, they can go about their lives as usual. Were joined now by one of our regular gps, dr ellie cannon. Thanks for coming on on a sunday, doctor cannon. I guess the first thing that came to my mind when i heard about this was, how reliable our Lateral Flow Test, because heard about this was, how reliable our lateralflow test, because i had a false positive very recently. Well, they are as reliable as we need them for this situation. So when we are doing a large number like this, when people are very symptomatic, then they are pitting lily useful. We have to weigh that p lily useful. We have to weigh that up against how reliable is Contact Tracing and Self Isolation in the first place, which to be honest, in the uk, has not been a Great Success. , y. , the uk, has not been a Great Success the uk, has not been a Great Success. ,. ,. ,. ,. ,. ,. , success. Can you elaborate on that a bit. Success. Can you elaborate on that a bit talking success. Can you elaborate on that a bit. Talking about success. Can you elaborate on that a bit. Talking about self success. Can you elaborate on that a bit. Talking about Self Isolation, bit. Talking about Self Isolation, listening to ministers, you know, telling the public to do this for well over a year, do you think it has been effective . It well over a year, do you think it has been effective . Has been effective . It doesnt a ear has been effective . It doesnt appear so has been effective . It doesnt appear so. Certainly has been effective . It doesnt appear so. Certainly the has been effective . It doesnt appear so. Certainly the data | appear so. Certainly the data pointed out. It has been a very difficult situation for people in work, in certain circumstances, who cannot afford to self isolate. It is very difficult for nhs staff who have been having to self isolate, and therefore we have had huge numbers of people off all the time. It has been especially difficult for children, often self isolating in their year children, often self isolating in theiryear group, children, often self isolating in their year group, whom they have often never seen or met, and they are off school for an extra ten days. So i think this is a really positive step, because we havent been very good at Self Isolation, because it is very, very difficult and often it isnt possible. These tests, and often it isnt possible. These tests. The and often it isnt possible. These tests, the lateral and often it isnt possible. These tests, the lateral flow and often it isnt possible. These tests, the Lateral Flow Tests, and often it isnt possible. These| tests, the Lateral Flow Tests, how easyis tests, the Lateral Flow Tests, how easy is it for people to actually carried out . Because you worry about whether you are going to far up in your nose, have you put it in your throat rightly, is that a problem . On an individual basis of course it is important to look at how accurate they are, are you going up your nose and mouth, are you mixing the reagent properly. When we are looking at large numbers like this they become more and more accurate. Of course, these things rely on people doing them as well as we can, but we have relied on the public the whole way through, we have relied on each other to wear masks properly, to go for testing when we have to do, to turn up for vaccinations. I think people have got used to Lateral Flow Test, everybody with children have, for going to school. A lot of workplaces now expect Lateral Flow Tests. I think it is another thing that is really worth getting used to do if it means that we dont have to do self isolate the contacts. U, we dont have to do self isolate the contacts. ,. ,. ~. ,. , we dont have to do self isolate the contacts. ,. ,. ~. , h,. , we dont have to do self isolate the contacts. ~. ,. , contacts. Going back to some sort of normality is contacts. Going back to some sort of normality is obviously contacts. Going back to some sort of normality is obviously what contacts. Going back to some sort of normality is obviously what many normality is obviously what many people want. Do you think if this is successful, and it works, do you think that is a possibility . I think that is a possibility . I really do. I have personally witnessed from patients and family how difficult Self Isolation is for contact purposes. And if you look at the data that have come out from Public Health england, in fact, so many people who did self isolate because they were contacts, they were actually never at risk of getting covid themselves, or passing it on. So there were a lot of people isolating really unnecessarily, which has really stops life in the uk in the last year. So this is potentially an incredibly positive move, another one to get a all back to normal life. To normal life. Doctor, do you think that lateral to normal life. Doctor, do you think that lateral flow to normal life. Doctor, do you think that Lateral Flow Tests to normal life. Doctor, do you think that Lateral Flow Tests are to normal life. Doctor, do you think that Lateral Flow Tests are the to normal life. Doctor, do you think that Lateral Flow Tests are the best l that Lateral Flow Tests are the best option in terms of other tests that are also out there . They are not as accurate as the pcr test, so the swabs that you would go for as a national centre, but as i said, on this massive scale, particularly for asymptomatic people, so in particular where we are looking for people who may be developing the infection before they have actually got symptoms and are able to pass it on, in that situation they are proving to be useful and weve seen that over the last couple of months with all of the children who have been tested to go Back To School and School Transmission rates are at an all time low. So they really are helpful on that mass scale. Alltime low. So they really are helpful on that mass scale. What are our helpful on that mass scale. What are your thoughts helpful on that mass scale. What are your thoughts about helpful on that mass scale. What are your thoughts about what helpful on that mass scale. What are your thoughts about what is your thoughts about what is happening in liverpool and this trial that is taking place . I know many people are eagerly waiting to see what the results say. Its see what the results say. Its fantastic see what the results say. Its fantastic its see what the results say. Its fantastic its so see what the results say. It s fantastic its so good to see this organised and piloted by the Public Health body. This is exactly what we need to happen. We are taking obviously a very cautious approach. In terms of Something Like schools opening all businesses opening, obviously that was something that had to happen and we have to watch the rates afterwards but for Something Like clubbing and mass events, it can be done as it has beenin events, it can be done as it has been in a very controlled way and a very scientific way and it makes me very scientific way and it makes me very optimistic because it tells us that really, the Public Health bodies are keen to get us back to our lives as safely as possible and they have really tried to do this in the most rigorously scientific way. Absolutely, our fingers are firmly crossed. Doctor cannon, thank you. I wont mention monday yet so lets start in the shorter yet so lets start in the shorter term because this morning, it looks like a lovely start up there for many with a Beautiful Day get out and about four double shot with one of our Weather Watchers. Sunny spells but like yesterday have some heavy downpour is popping up here and there and yes, i have to mention mondays weather, currently developing out in the atlantic and you can see a lot of cloud out in the atlantic and that is going to bring heavy rain and brisk winds as well for Bank Holiday Monday but in the shorter term most of us starting with clear skies overhead, meaning early sunshine. Test and fog is around, some fairly dense down towards the south at the moment, and a few showers, especially around the coast to start off but as we go through the day, those showers will really get going inland and some will be heavy, some hail and thunder thrown in for good measure and the winds light so if the charlatans up where you are it could be with you for quite some time. Temperatures 814, a for quite some time. Temperatures 8 1li, a little disappointing for this time of year but in the sunshine it wont be too bad. The evening the showers fade so dry weather for the first half of the night but out west cloud and rain is gathering, especially into Northern Ireland by the end of the night, milder than recently for most of us although i think across scotland some places malignancy A Touch Of Frost. The Bank Holiday Monday, an area of low pressure comes in from the atlantic, the first time weve seen one of these for a while. It has been dry lately. Not so tomorrow. Outbreaks of ramil pushed east across the uk, a dryer start across eastern areas but even here the Randall Setting the afternoon. North of Scotland May Stayjust about dry with some sunshine. Over high ground of higher than scotland, the southern upland, maybe into the very highest hills of the pennines, conflict and some snow mixed in, brisk winds, those other gusts, gusts of 50 or 60 miles an hourfor exposed in the southend west. Temperatures 7 12 degrees at the very best, it will feel pretty disappointing. The rain will eventually clear eastward during tomorrow night and behind the winds are back northerly. It means a return of some cold air so as low pressure swings away eastwards as we get into tuesday, you can follow the white lines, the isobars all the way up white lines, the isobars all the way up to the art and it shows where the air is going to be coming from and so yes, we are back into something of a chill as we head through the week ahead. This is the outlook, Bank Holiday Monday, outbreaks of rain and strong winds and then further ahead, to a mix of sunny spells and showers, some heavy, possibly thundery, possibly wintry over Higher Ground in the north and thenit over Higher Ground in the north and then it was the continued risk that we will see some frost at i certainly no heatwave on the way but some pretty heavy rain for Bank Holiday Monday. Good news a pioneering surgery to repair a babys spine while still in its mothers womb was made available for the first time on the nhs lastjanuary. Since then, the surgery, which reduces the complications caused by spina bifida, has been carried out on 32 women, despite the massive disruptions caused by the pandemic. Our Health Correspondent katharine da costa reports. It comes with risks but then, this operation will mean that i have done the best for her. In my mind, there was no choice, ijust had to do it. Helena travelled to the Specialist Hospital in belgium which is working in partnership with the nhs, a team of 25 clinicians carried out the complex operation, just like this one, to repair milas spinal cord and close the hole in her back. Previously the baby would have to have a repair to the spinal defect after birth but now because we can offer surgery in the womb, what it means is that the defect is closed a lot earlier so it means there is less damage to the spine and that increases the chance the baby is going to walk. The foetus is not is not pulled out from the womb but it is maintained in the womb but it is exposed on the back where we are doing the operation so it is about 3 doing the operation so it is about 3 four centimetres opening in the womb that allows us to see the problem and to repair it. It came just one day after an egg was laid in the nest. Police say theyre Pulling Out All The Stops to find those responsible. Were joined now by the naturalist and broadcaster 1010 williams. Ospreys are a very rare sight in the uk. Nesting platforms for the Birds Of Prey were first built at Llyn Brenig Reservoir in north wales in 2013 as part of a successful conservation project. But on friday night, just one day after an egg was laid in this nest, whats been described as an horrific act of vandalism took place the nesting platform was cut down with chainsaws. Were really pulling all stops out to try to catch the person or persons responsible for this. The whole team are absolutely devastated by it, and im sure the community are as well. These birds give a lot of people a lot of pleasure and ijust cant understand how anybody could go and do Something Like that. Ospreys spend the winter in africa, typically returning to the same nest each spring. Osprey eggs have been targeted by thieves before, although police say they dont know the motive in this instance. My initial reaction when i heard the news was incredulity, really. Shock. Ijust couldnt believe anybody had done this to such a rare bird. Youve got to bear in mind, you know, ospreys have been absent from wales for 400 odd years. Conservationists have placed a decoy egg on a nearby site in the hope that the pair will nest there instead. Anyone with information about this crime is being urged to contact north wales police. This is the only hope, really, that it is still early i hope, really, that it is still early in spring. They laid one egg. They normally lay one, two, three is more normal. What we are hoping is that by putting a dummy egg in a nearby nest, the female will be induced to head over there and lay two or maybe even three eggs again. If she lays two eggs and incubates those successfully, we will be delighted, although of course that does not take away from this idiotic act of vandalism. Take away from this idiotic act of vandalism vandalism. Looking at these pictures. Vandalism. Looking at these pictures. I vandalism. Looking at these pictures, i have vandalism. Looking at these pictures, i have already vandalism. Looking at these pictures, i have already said vandalism. Looking at these l pictures, i have already said it vandalism. Looking at these pictures, i have already said it but i will say it again. They are such majestic creatures. Why is it so tragic, what has happened . What is so special about these birds . It is because they so special about these birds . It 3 because they bring joy to so many people. We have the Osprey Centre up at glyn brenig, we have another on the derby estuary, and they attract normally, as they will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors, each one enthralled by these beautiful birds. I think that is why there has been such an outrage at this act of vandalism. Everybody is just devastated and also mystified. Thank you, absolutely no point whatsoever. It really doesnt make sense. Lets catch up with the sport. It could be a deciding day in the Premier League title race, couldnt it . Manchester city will be confirmed as premier League Champions but only if the united result at old trafford goes their way. And, in another twist, it could the reigning champions liverpool that hand city the title. If they beat united, then guardiolas side will be champions. City did their bit yesterday, beating Crystal Palace 2 0, Sergio Aguero with the opener. Before Ferran Torres sealed the win two minutes later. If united do lose, itll be citys third title in four seasons. And even a normally calm Pep Guardiola admitted he may have one eye on this afternoons game. I will take a look. Yeah, i will take a look. But a part of that is in our hands. So, four games, were gonna be victory, and well be champions, and, uh, then im really impressed. So, the way we have done this Premier League. And im surprised. I didnt expect it. They can say, ok, it doesnt matter. They play like they run more open. They were consistent and at the end, three points, 80 points, and we are close. At the other end of the table, brighton have all but secured premier League Football for another season. They beat leeds 2 0, Danny Welbeck with their second a brilliant solo effort. The win moves brighton up to 1ath, 10 points above the relegation zone and fulham. Fulham are still deep in trouble after they were beaten it was one of the most eagerly anticipated fights in womens boxing and last night the bout between katie taylor and Natasha Jonas certainly did not disappoint. The pair, who fought as amateurs back at the london 2012 olympics, went ten very even rounds but Katie Taylorjust managed to cling on to maintain her undefeated record and remain as the undisputed World Lightweight champion. Lewis hamilton was hoping for his 100th Pole Position, but he was pipped to the front by his mercedes teammate Valterri Bottas for this afternoons portuguese grand prix. Red bulls Max Verstappen will start third on the grid thanks to the windy conditions at portimao. The dutchman had set a time fast enough for pole, but was blown off course and had his time deleted. Valtteri bottas went fastest, just a fraction of a second quicker than championship leader hamilton. The World Snooker championship final gets underway later today in front of a capacity crowd in sheffield. The 2005 winner shaun murphy pulled off a stunning comeback to beat kyren wilson in his semi final. He won eight frames in a row against wilson, who lost in last years final to go from 12 9 down to win17 12. Murphy is now through to his fourth World Championship final and his first since 2015. Id be struggling to find a time from, you know, so far behind in a match where ive played as well as certainly tonight came out. And, er, no ones more shocked than me you know . In fact, a terrible run here in the last few years, and played out in that very arena and made the game look very easy at times and made it look unquestionably the most difficult game in the world. So, ithink, you know john will back me up its when youre out there, it can be brutal or it can be the best place in the world. Murphy will take on the three time World Champion mark selby. This outrageous piece of good fortune helped him eventually beat Stuart Bingham in an epic match by 17 frames to 15. And there was agony for Geraint Thomas, who was denied victory on the fourth stage of the tour of romandie after crashing within metres of the finish line. He was on course to take the overall lead even if he hadnt won the stage, but the tricky conditions in switzerland took him by surprise. Thomas eventually finished third and remains second overall ahead of todays final stage. It looked a nasty crash, but he has tweeted to say hes ok. Well, what a shocker of a final 100 metres. I had no feeling in my hands so when i tried to change gear, ijust lost my grip on the bars. Im all good though, he says. Good to hear that he is ok. Many cyclists heading out on Bank Holiday Monday, the conditions dont look good. Dont make the same mistake where your gloves. Where your gloves. Thank you very much, where your gloves. Thank you very much. Count the big weekend of live events continues in liverpool today. 5,000 people will gather in sefton park later to watch the Band Blossoms, with no face masks or social distancing required. Everyone attending will have to show a negative covid test before being allowed in. Its all part of the governments pilot scheme to see how large scale events can go ahead safely when Lockdown Restrictions are lifted. Dan johnson reports. After a year of lockdown for live events, liverpool could now hold the key to all of us getting back out to enjoy the things we love. Its hard to imagine that a bit of grass, a bit of fencing and a huge big top could be sojoyous but, gosh, it isjoyous. Sefton park is the venue for this afternoons festival. The government said we want you to do it, but we you to do it in liverpool. I was like, i would do it on mars, quite frankly. It wouldnt matter where i did it. But, of course, liverpool is here, blossoms immediately came to mind, the lathums immediately came to mind and suddenly, weve got a gig. I tell you what, its exciting just to wear the wristbands again. The simplest things, eh . The masks can come off, there will be no requirement for social distancing, and in just a few hours now, therell be 5,000 people crowded in here, finally able to enjoy live music once again. Stockport Band Blossoms are on stage for the first time in a year. I want to know. Since youve been gone. Have i been on your mind . Weve played a set, like, once. Laughter. Weve not we had three rehearsals weve done it twice. Were not selling it well, are we . Please come, still. I suspect they will, after such a long wait. You know, its like a bit of history, in a way, isnt it . Because theres not been a gig for so long, so, yeah. Now as the days are going on, its a bit like, oh god, its actually a big thing. No, yeah, were really excited just to play live. Especially if we can get our industry back open, its been closed so long with very little support, if any support. It will be nice to get back and sort of kick start it again, wont it, get it back on track. Kind of give everyone that confidence and optimism to move forward a bit more, yeah. 100 . I think a few songs and everybody is just going to forget about what weve been through in the last year, which is what we deserve, isnt it . Fans will be tested before and after the gig. Im glad we get to make the rest of the country jealous. Its nice for the northerners. Will it be fun . Absolutely it wont feel like an experiment . But wont that add to the fun . And since weve all been caged up for so long, everyones just going to be gagging to have a nice time. It will be good no matter what. We do a lot of gigs and festivals as a family, notjust sort of me and the other half. So, you know, a love of music, but also just getting out with your friends and a couple of beers. And hopefully its the road to recovery, isnt it . Theres nothing like it, is there . Hearing 10, 20, 30,000| people singing together. I think it will blow peoples minds, actually. The city needs this, but so does the rest of the live events business. We all went into it going, brilliant, we just want to get things open. And then you realise actually how hard that is. But this weekend, were doing it. This weekend is that first moment where you go, this could happen, this could be. And things will go wrong, this is an experiment, its not all going to go perfectly. Loads of things will go wrong. But all that learning will help the next one. Scientists are already analysing data from friday nights warehouse gig. That was a first step in bringing music back to life. And this next stage will hopefully tell them if its safe the rest of us. Dan johnson, bbc news. Mairead smyth is at sefton park for us this morning, where preparations are underway. Mairead, another big night for people in liverpool, and for musicians as well . Good morning, another day| of downpour dodging awaits because we have got some sunshine around and it is a beautiful start to the day for many but we are expecting some showers to develop and some will be on the heavy side, just as they were during yesterday. And then if we look at the satellite, you can see all of the cloud lying in wait out within the atlantic and that is heading in our direction and promises to bring a very soggy day indeed for Bank Holiday Monday. In the shorter term you can see a few splotches of cloud, already bringing some showers, an area drifting across the irish sea, the patches of mist and fog around as well which should tend to clear and then while we will see some sunshine particularly by the afternoon, the showers will start to get going again, some heavy ones, some thundery one, somehow mixing in although signs of it late in the day, it may start to dry up a little bit across Western Areas. A cool feeling day, 8 11i, although the winds will be pretty light. Through this evening many showers will fade so long, clear spells to take us through the night and one or two misty patches for a time but with a cloud spreading from the west and ran into Northern Ireland by the end of the night, a mild night than lately for most of us, although across parts of scotland i think again we will see A Touch Of Frost. For tomorrow, again we will see A Touch Of Frost. Fortomorrow, bank again we will see A Touch Of Frost. For tomorrow, Bank Holiday Monday, here comes an area of low pressure and this is going to bring some of the wettest weather many of us will have seen for quite some time so the further east you are, getting off to a dry start but rain already across Northern Ireland first thing, spreading across other Western Areas through the morning and sweeping eastwards through the afternoon. The far north of Scotland May Stayjust about dry with some spells of sunshine. We will see some wintering is mixing in over the Higher Ground of scotland, even parts of Northern Ireland, and it will be windy, those other gusts, you can see 50 or 60 miles an hour through exposed coasts in the south and west and it will feel really disappointing up there as well with top temperatures between seven and 12. Through monday evening, the rain will eventually start to clear away and behind it you can see turning northerly and this is going to bring a resurgence of cold air. This area of low pressure will clear away but for tuesday you can see those white lines going all the way up to the arctic. That is where the air will be coming from. These northerly winds will bring the cold air back across the british isles. Through the week ahead after that soggy monday, it is a return to sunshine and showers with some decidedly cool days and some cold and potentially frosty nights. That is all of the weather for now. Frosty nights. That is all of the weather for now. Cheers, thank you, a Bank Holiday Monday so of course it will rain you do need a bit of rain. Lets have a look at todays papers. Heavy and persistent rain sweeping across the uk, strong winds and all morning, on sunday 2nd of may, a top story. A new testing scheme could present some people having to self isolate if theyve beenin having to self isolate if theyve been in contact with someone who test positive for coronavirus. The trial which starts next week in england will at close contact to take a test every morning for a certain amount of days instead. It will allow people to carry on working. Our health correspondence explains. Being contacted by test entries, and salted self isolate currently means this. Ten days of quarantine at home if youre the contact of someone who has tested positive. Whether many people realise stay are now house the all time is unclear, some estimate the number of close contact who complete the full quarantine period as low as one in ten. So, the government is trialling these as a positive break possible alternative. In a new study which starts next week, up to 40,000 contact aces in england will be asked to take a rapid lateral load test every morning for seven days. The result comes back in 30 minutes. If negative, they can go about their lives as usual instead of having to warranting at home. So may be valued itself isolate the as they were contact actually were never at risk of getting covid themselves are passing it on, so there was a lot of people isolating, really unnecessarily which has really stopped life in the uk in the last year, so this is potentially an incredibly that have moved. The Health Secretary matt hancox at the pile team could help shift the dial by offering a viable alternative to Self Isolation that would allow people to carry on going to work and living their lives. But the accuracy or Lateral Flow Kits has been criticised by some scientists with others saying there may be placed this kind of testing but only for back by improved Financial Support for those who do record a positive test. 5000 people attending the vessel in liverpool today as part of the governments pile team for live events. At the same time, the search for trying to hold whichever institutions responsible should be held to account has continued and we had, in the hours of last night, the Public Security minister speak quite extensively about this with a Written Statement as well and he had said that while he took responsibility for what happened, he didnt take the blame. India continues to struggle through a Second Covid Wave as the country reported its highest daily death toll in a 24 hour period with the rank thousand 700 people dying from the virus. Meanwhile votes are being counted in five Indian States for elections were held last month. From delhi, our correspondent told us about the situation in the country. Weve seen one grim milestone after the other in terms of number of infected cases and the awesome lives, and what is worrying in these numbers is now the infect spreading to the rural part of the country for over 60 of its population lives without basic minimum health care, it will be a challenge. Indias Prime Minister has been meeting officials to review distribution of resources and essential medicines which are running short even in neighbouring cities and his party is also looking out for the votes that have been counted today as the party needs a desperate win, just to reinforce the popularity even in these times of crisis. What we are doing is offering contact of cases of covid 19 the opportunity to help us understand how effect of this daily testing could as an alternative to Self Isolation. White many people now familiar with Lateral Flow Test is working about many times on the programme, many workplaces use them, we use them at the bbc. Are you confident they are. They are not as accurate as the tr test but are you confident they are Accurate Enough to achieve what you want to achieve . Yes. As you say, no test will detect every single case but these tests are proving helpful and reliable, as you say, with many others using them. But do us part of the study is as well as the daily testing with the lateral flow device, we will also ask participants to take a pcr test at the beginning of the period and at the beginning of the period and at the beginning of the period and at the end of the seven day period, and also if they test positive at any time to confirm the results. Everyone understands why Self Isolation has been used as a tool. Do you think it has worked . Its been frustrating for many people who have been told to self isolate that you have never delivered a positive test. This is why we think that this study, if the results show that this approach is effective, could really help us return to greater normality. As you say, Self Isolation is very challenging for some people, particularly working from home. All those who dont have access to readily available support if we are able to show the people who are not controlling the virus fracturing the virus cannot continue with firmly normal lives, although some of the measures that we should observe should continue including good hygiene measures, and avoiding unnecessary contact. All those things should continue as normal but of this allows us to return to greater normality, it would be a greater normality, it would be a great step forward. We need to recruit approximately 40,000 people to the study and the reason we need such high numbers is because fortunately, as you know at the moment, the number of positive cases in the country is low and that is great news what it means we need to recruit more people to the study to allow us to assess how effective it is and to make sure there is no impact on onward transmission, so if. We would be grateful for everyones help with the study, its really important in our fight against this deadly virus, so the more people that help us, you more quickly we can get the results but we do need about ili,000 people. Hello, this is breakfast with rogerjohnson and sima kotecha. Every week, presenter ros atkins takes an in depth look at one of the issues in the news. This week hes examining how the uk is adjusting to a post brexit world. Since 2016, outside source has followed the brexit story, through the referendum, through the long process to find a withdrawal deal and then a new trade deal. And now brexit s a reality, and i want to look at if promises have been kept. Im going to assess three different areas, starting with fishing, which accounts for 0. 1 of the uk economy but has always played a big part in this story. To those who support it, brexit is about taking back control. Its an idea that resonated with fishermen and women. We should be the guardians of our own seas, not ministers who we do not know, we havent voted in, making decisions for us. Borisjohnson argued that more prosperity would come with more control. Youve got the Eu Commission sitting, instead of us, deciding how fish stocks, our uk fish, are going to be parcelled up and divvied up, so you take back control. But did borisjohnson and his government take back control . Well, the brexit trade deal reduces the value of the fish that eu boats can catch in uk waters by 25 across five years. And its estimated that by 2026, uk boats will have access to an extra £145 million worth of fish every year. Thats a shift, but its definitely not taking back control immediately. And what happens beyond 2026 isnt settled. Because of this, not everyone is happy. This is one fisherman before the deal. The french get 84 of the channel cod and the uk gets 9 , which doesnt strike me as being particularly fair. But brexit hasnt changed the equation on cod. Then theres the brexit promise of keeping eu fishing boats out. This is the fisheries minister before the deal. Access to the uks territorial seas are out of scope for any fisheries Framework Agreement with the eu. It wasnt out of scope. The uk then signed a deal that allowed some eu boats to fish those waters. Fishing news reported this under the headline boris brexit betrayal. It argued that a one off chance to right historic wrongs has been squandered. Boris johnsons defence was to look to the long term. By 2026, the fishing people of this country will have access to all the fish in all the territorial waters of this country. This, though, is highly unlikely to happen because the eus response would make the move very costly and some supporters of brexit have already seen enough. We were very disappointed with the overall shape of the deal on fisheries. We want to be able to take advantage of being an independent coastal state fully and not essentially one where we feel weve got our hands tied behind our backs. But the challenge here is connected to where the uk sells its fish, which is neatly summarised by this fish merchant. 95 of what we buy is exported, mainly to the eu. So its our market. Without it, wed have no business. This issue is about the eus access to uk waters and the uks access to eu markets. These two factors are being constantly balanced. Brexit hasnt changed that. For his part, borisjohnson is saying that after 2026. There is no theoretical limit beyond those placed by science or conservation on the quantity of our own fish that we can fish in our waters. Theres no theoretical limit, but theres a very clear practical one. In reality, the uk government in 2026 is not going to block all eu access to uk waters because the price paid in lost export markets would be too high. Its a compromise, one thats brought some changes, but so far for uk fishing, brexit is farfrom the transformational moment it was sold as. Now, borisjohnson made this promise on brexit and Northern Ireland. We will respect the Peace Process and the good friday agreement. Cheering and applause but Northern Irelands violent past remains clear in the memory and this month, weve seen reminders of that violence, the most serious for years. But where, if at all, does brexit fit into this . To answer that, we need to understand what was promised and whats happened. From the start, there was one thing on which the eu and the uk agreed. We will, under no circumstances, have checks at or near the border in Northern Ireland. But that commitment didnt solve this problem. If we leave the Customs Union and the Single Market, there has to be a border. It can be on the island of ireland or it can be in the sea, but you cant not have a border. You cant magic away the need for a border. So, having ruled out a [and border, could brexit involve checks in the irish sea between Northern Ireland and the rest of the uk . Well, in 2018, borisjohnson ruled that this out too, while attacking the then Prime Minister Theresa Mays Brexit plan. We would be damaging the fabric of the union with regulatory checks and even customs controls between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Now, i have to tell you, no british conservative government could or should sign up to any such arrangement. But that is what brexit has delivered. In 2020, there was this meeting between Boris Johnson and irelands Prime Minister. Mrjohnson again was clear there will be noted border down the irish sea, he said. Over my dead body. But if thats what was said, this is whats happened the brexit trade deal comes with a Northern Ireland protocol. It stipulates that Northern Ireland, in effect, stays in the eu Single Market for goods, and so certain goods moving to Northern Ireland from the rest of the uk are subject to checks the checks we were told, wouldnt happen and thats brought pressure on Northern Irelands peace settlement. The good friday agreement was signed in the 90s. It ended violence between nationalists who want Northern Ireland to join the republic of ireland and loyalists who want it to stay in the uk. And as part of this, the irish border is completely open. No checks. The eu and the uk agreed, any [and border checks risked republican anger. But there was no equivalent calculation for loyalists and checks in the irish sea. And anger has followed. The protocol has betrayed us and has made us feel like foreigners in our own country. Tea and sympathy will not cut the mustard. Weve also seen violence in loyalist areas. This was belfast in april. This was connected to upset over the handling of a large republican funeral last year, and thats connected to a broader perception that loyalists are not being treated fairly. For his part, borisjohnson expressed concern at the violence and hes called the checks in the irish sea unnecessary, describing whats happening this way. Were getting the barnacles off the thing, and there have been, and sandpapering it into shape. This is the Prime Minister arguing to sandpaper into shape the checks that he agreed to. In fact, the uk has now delayed some of these checks and is accused by the eu of breaking international law. All of which highlights that how to be outside the eu and to avoid border checks remains a problem thats hard to sandpaper away. And so, not for the first time, belfast port is centre stage. This, after all, is the city that built the titanic something its creators thought was unsinkable. And back in 2018, as borisjohnson warned of getting the wrong type of brexit, he turned to that story. The titanic springs to mind. Applause and now is the time to point out the iceberg ahead. Now, though, borisjohnson believes with brexit here, the uk can sail on, its peace protected, greater prosperity to come. But for some, his titanic warning still stands. They see a brexit for Northern Ireland that isnt as promised, where the risk is greater than its creators realise. Whats certain is that how brexit works for Northern Ireland is still being contested. Next, we turn to trade, because it was at the heart of what brexiteers promised the uk. I genuinely believe our future will so much brighter if we vote leave and take back control of our trade. The vote leave website told us that. And if that was vote leave, their opponents had predictions too. The economic argument is beyond doubt leaving the eu is a one way ticket to a poorer britain. At the time, my colleague alex forsyth outlined other warnings. And this government assessment predicted a vote to leave would push our economy into recession. Well, the uk voted out and brexit is now here, so what did happen . Well, house prices didnt fall between 2016 and early 2020 when the pandemic started. Unemployment figures didnt rise for the same period. On food prices, the British Retail Consortium reports. And a recession didnt follow the uk voting out. However, look at this graph from the bank of england in 2018. Its calculations found all brexit scenarios producing a smaller uk economy than if brexit hadnt happened. And what about the uks new trade deals around the world . Well, heres the International Trade minister tweeting this month. So 68 deals done, but many of them are direct copies of the existing eu deal with those countries, and deals with india and the us are a good way off. Then theres the promise of trading freely with the eu. Well, heres the European Parliament ratifying the new uk eu deal. This deal does allow tariff free and quota free trade in goods. But there are new taxes to pay in some cases, additional vat, in some cases, goods arent tariff free. And thats having an impact. In some instances, we cant get it to them at all, and in other instances they get charged such a large amount of import duty that theyre just not going to do that, were going to lose our custom. And these are the figures. Uk exports and imports with the eu fell when the deal came in. They then recovered but not to where they were. And one of the reasons for that is something vote leave said brexit would reduce bureaucracy. These forms dont make any sense, they are nonsensical. The messaging from government is very much were helping, were helping, were helping. The answerfrom me is, youre not helping at all. We know paperwork has increased. Also bear in mind this new trade deal covers goods, not services, and the uk economy is dominated by. Services, like banking and insurance, but a deal for the city of london to access the eu still has to be done. So where does all of this leave us . Well, the german commentator Wolfgang Munchau concludes. He goes on. And if you look at imf growth forecasts for the worlds wealthiest countries, the uk is the third highest. Though, bear in mind, allgdp figures are dominated by the pandemic. Certainly, though, some of the more catastrophic brexit predictions have not come to pass. Nor, though, is there evidence of a brexit boost to trade, but some argue the uk will pay a cost. The ippr think tank argues. It concludes. Well, this week, borisjohnson has talked of the trade deal as the final step in a long journey. It is undoubtedly a political landmark, but really, this is just the start. Evidence of that came this week. France is demanding uk fishing guarantees and threatening blocks on financial services. The trade deal may be done, but the negotiating isnt. Nor are the ramifications for trade that brexit will bring. Now the sport. Maybe Manchester City supporters arent all champagne drinkers. Manchester city will be confirmed as premier League Champions but, only if the united result at old trafford goes their way. And, in another twist, it could the reigning champions liverpool that hand city the title. If they beat united, then guardiolas side will be champions. City did their bit yesterday, beating Crystal Palace 2 0, Sergio Aguero with the opener, before Ferran Torres sealed the win two minutes later. That goal from aguero was his i82nd league goalfor city. Hes set to leave the club when his contract runs out at the end of the season and guardiola paid tribute to him afterwards. What a goal, what a player, what a man. Im completely in love with him as a man, especially. So other players with less quality, less legends, behave a completely different way. People cannot believe how we missed him, it was more than one year injured and we cannot use him many times but maybe arrive at the right moment. The World Snooker championship final gets underway later today in front of a full capacity crowd in sheffield. Its part of the governments pilot scheme to ensure fans can safely return to sporting venues. Bbc sport presenter Radzi Chinyanganya joins us now from the crucible theatre ahead of the days action. We have seen people back in the stands during the course of this tournament and gradually the crowd is getting bigger but finally a capacity crowd. How different will it feel . I was here in 2020 with no credit at all and we will have 100 capacity crowds. The final session tomorrow is a sell out. 1002 seats available, 1002 seats sold. Just coming up to ten to nine. We are off to liverpool in a minute. But before that the weather. Ben is with us. A mixed day today with sunshine and showers and i will show you two scenes from the north west of england. This was cheshire with some innocuous strata cumulus cloud breaking up to reveal sunshine but not too far away and cumbria are big threatening cumulonimbus cloud delivering a heel showered. It really is one of those sunshine and showers days. You see it on the satellite picture, that innocuous cloud starting to break up and this big lumpy cloud pushing and off the irish sea and wales one of the first places today to see some showers. A few across the north east of scotland. And most other places starting sunny but through the day as sun heats the ground more showers bubbling up and you can see showers are breaking out across the chart through the afternoon. Some will have heel, some will be heavy and some will be thundery, not particularly one for the time of year. 7 degrees to 14 degrees although in the sunshine which is quite strong at this time of year it wont feel too bad and winds will be light. Through this evening at night showers will fade and we will see clear skies but more cloud rolling in from the west through the second part of the night which will deliver quite heavy rain to Northern Ireland. Scotland will see frost in places and for tomorrow not a great looking day if youre hoping to get out and about because of this area of low pressure, the First Atlantic law we have seen for quite some time and it has timed itselfjust in time for a bank holiday. It means heavy rain pushing its way east. A dry start for some eastern areas but that will not last. A bit of snow mixing and over the very highest ground of the pennines, Southern Uplands and grampians, only over the very highest hills without showers how chilly it will be. Windy as well and we could see gusts of around 60 mph for some exposed course in the south west and with the cloud and wind and rain it will not feel great, 7 degrees to 12 degrees. Three monday evening that rain will clear and it stays quite windy through the night and as we head deeper into the week this area of low pressure rules eastwards and look at the white lines. You can follow them all away up to the north and all away up to the arctic. That is where our air will be coming from, straight down from the north. It is me believe it or not but it will feel nothing like it. It is the month of may. This week there will be sunshine and some wintry showers perhaps from the north end at night still potentially A Touch Of Frost in places. Bank holiday monday will be a bit of a wash out for many of us. Quite a mixed outlook and a chilly one as well. 5,000 people will gather in liverpools sefton park later to watch the Band Blossoms with no facemasks or social distancing required. Everyone attending will have to show a negative covid test before being allowed in. Its all part of the governments pilot scheme to see how large scale events can go ahead safely. Mairead smyth is at sefton park for us this morning how are preparations going, mairead . It is so exciting to be here, a real privilege to be part of this this morning. The sun is shining, a few threatening clouds, dull, but it will all be taking place under this big top tent at sefton park in liverpool. 5000 people will come here and prove they have had a negative covid test before they can come in and its all part of a Government Research programme to examine how things like this can happen notjust in liverpool but across the country. A huge impact notjust across the country. A huge impact not just on the across the country. A huge impact notjust on the performers but on the crew, the people that make this happen.
