Welcome to Bbc News. India has registered a new World Record for daily Coronavirus Infections for the fourth day in a row with almost 350,000 new cases. In the capital, delhi the epicentre of a ferocious second wave of covid the disease is killing one person every four minutes. As hospitals across India Struggle with overcrowding and limited oxygen supplies, an initial shipment of Uk Aid is due to leave tonight. From delhi, our correspondent yogita limaye reports. Every day it is the same scenario. We are left with only two hours of oxygen, and we are only two hours of oxygen, and we are only getting assurance from the system, no oxygen. find only getting assurance from the system, no oxygen. Only getting assurance from the system, no oxygen. And so, families are bein system, no oxygen. And so, families are being told system, no oxygen. And so, families are being told to system, no oxygen. And so, families are being told to organise system, no oxygen. And so, families are being told to organise oxygen. I are being told to organise oxygen. At one medical shop, we found people with empty cylinders waiting to buy their own supply for Loved Ones who urgently need it. People are being told that the government is rushing in oxygen. But its already too late. Every Crematorium Weve been to, weve seen body after body being brought in. Its hard for anyone to keep count, but what workers have been telling me is that the real scale of deaths caused by Covid I9 in india is a lot higher than what official numbers reflect. And a lot official numbers reflect. And a lot of those who died right now have done so because they couldnt get oxygen in time. There is a sense of abandonment in this country. Citizens are stepping up to do what a government should. Left to fight a vicious pandemic on their own. As mentioned earlier, the uk is sending a shipment of Medical Equipment to india, to help the country fight its current wave of coronavirus. The package has been funded by the foreign, commonwealth development office, and includes ventilators and Oxygen Concentrators from surplus stocks. Earlier the foreign secretary gave more details. We are sending out an Emergency Segment of over 600 items of equipment ventilators, Oxygen Concentrators and the aim is to provide the support the indians need at their hour of need, really, if judging by the distressing scenes weve seen in many other hospitals in india. Will be a serious of further shipments and we are in ongoing discussion with the Indian Government about four of they may need. We want to provide all the support because they are close friends, increasingly important partners, but we need this kind of international collaboration if we are going to get through the pandemic. We are not going to be safe until we are all safe. Earlier our world Affairs Correspondent had more detail on the equipment thats been sent to india. We are seeing now an awful lot of offers of help coming from quite a lot of places, so the british Government Today has announced that around 600 pieces of vital Medical Equipment will be sent to india in the next few days. Those include 400, sorry, 140 ventilators and around 495 Oxygen Concentrators. Now, those are machines that are able to generate oxygen from the atmosphere, thus relieving the pressure on the hospitals own Oxygen Supply systems and helping in that way. So, as i say, that equipment should be on the way shortly. The foreign secretary, dominic raab, has said that conversations with the Indian Government Go On and there could be more assistance to follow. The Prime Minister, who had to cancel a Trip Due to take place this week to india, has said that the uk is standing by what he described as a friend and a partner. There have also been Offers Today from the eu. The Eu Commission president has said that the Eus Emergency mechanisms are being activated, which means the eu is coordinating amongst the various Emergency Response organisations across members to see what equipment could be located and supplied quickly. Again, the emphasis is on medicines and on oxygen. Also, in the last half an hour or so, word from the White House that the biden administration is also stepping up with offers of protective gear, Medical Equipment and raw materials for vaccines. So, it is all gearing up in a fairly substantial way. It is all gearing up in a fairly substantialway. How it is all gearing up in a fairly substantial way. How capable any of this is of addressing or stopping this is of addressing or stopping this Wildfire Spread of Infection And Death in india, of course, well have to see. Joining me now is ravi singh, the Ceo And Founder of the international non Profit Aid and Relief Organisation Khalsa aid. Thank you very much forjoining us. What are you concentrating on in terms of the aid you are trying to provide for india . Its terms of the aid you are trying to provide for india . Provide for india . Its a very difficult situation, provide for india . Its a very difficult situation, a provide for india . Its a very difficult situation, a very provide for india . Its a very l difficult situation, a very fluid situation. 0urteams difficult situation, a very fluid situation. 0ur Teams In India already supplied some of these Oxygen Concentrators, and we have been sourcing much more aid, not just oxygen but also other supplies like emergency Meals Man may be support for the people who are on the roads, on the streets, who cant get admittance to hospital. Right now, from the uk, weve released a furtherfunding. We now, from the uk, weve released a further funding. We will develop 200 Oxygen Concentrators within india. They should be with us in the next day or two. We are also looking at importing some of these Oxygen Concentrators from abroad to our teams in the uk have been working very hard the last 24 hours and have identified suppliers who can work with those in transport by Air Freight as a matter of urgency. We have other ngos connected with us through our long term friendships, and they are doing a fantasticjob by supplying oxygen to individuals, to citizens. The worst part of that is that we Cant Supply cylinders. The Oxygen Cylinders are like Gold Dust at the moment, so the ngos are supplying oxygen only to those who have cylinders, and cylinders are being sold up to ten times the original value on the Black Market. There is an absolute, sheer desperation from relatives, family, friends of those who are really struggling with this covid strain, who are finding it very difficult to breathe. I had today in boxes for my E Mail and Social Media, text messages, im getting calls every few minutes from people around the world who have relatives in india, and its the same requests oxygen, please provide us support for our relatives who cant breathe. Im getting real time calls from people sitting with their relatives who are basically waiting for them to die because there is no oxygen and they are crying on the phone, and all i can do is say, look, we are going to do our best. We will try to coordinate with all the individuals. We have teams in Mumbai And Bangalore calling us with the same request. It seems like an absolute lack of coordination from the authorities, but now is the time to coordinate supplies and save lives, and im sure there will be an investigation later on as to how this all happened. It is very heartbreaking. We feel helpless also because we have the funding to do more. Just bringing in the supplies is a big issue, especially within india. The Black Market also has really exploded with a lot of aid and materials which may not even be genuine. Because people are desperate, we cantjust throw genuine. Because people are desperate, we cant just throw funds and buy something from unscrupulous traders etc. Its a desperate, desperate situation, a terrifying situation, ngos like us who have been working on the front line, war zones etc, for the last two decades, ive never seen anything like this, especially in a country that is moving towards the digital age at such a fast pace. There is a huge lack of infrastructure for covid, which i think was expected. This was expected by many people. There were warnings not to hold large gatherings, to cancel political rallies from all parties and opposition, but it wasnt listened to. Only two or three weeks ago, there were still rallies, no masks, and here we are today. Its heartbreaking. And here we are today. Its heartbreaking. And here we are today. Its heartbreakinu. ,. , heartbreaking. Ravi, it must be, all those peeple heartbreaking. Ravi, it must be, all those people asking heartbreaking. Ravi, it must be, all those people asking individually heartbreaking. Ravi, it must be, all those people asking individually forj those people asking individually for help, and all across the country, particularly in delhi, as we have seen, people absolutely desperate. Briefly, how much harder is it doing yourjob with the Travel Restrictions that are in place . Its restrictions that are in place . Its ve , restrictions that are in place . Its very. Very restrictions that are in place . It s very, very hard, because we cant really send experienced people from here, but we have very good teams within india. What we also found ourselves, and i think within india there needs to be, even now, more Practice Guidelines followed on covid, especially looking at borders with states with delhi to make sure it doesnt go into the countryside. So, ourfears are now, we are working all so towards delhi and other states, and also in punjab, where we come from, that this could now, from the cities, hit rural areas. I put a message out that we will work with any Government And Ngo will work with any Government And N60 to will work with any Government And Ngo to prepare now if it hits other cities and rural areas. So, ngo to prepare now if it hits other cities and ruralareas. So, It Ngo to prepare now if it hits other cities and rural areas. So, it is very difficult. You know whats needed, you know what has to be done, wejust needed, you know what has to be done, we just cant do it. Needed, you know what has to be done, Wejust Cant do it. Seeing all those bodies in the streets, all those individuals with their Loved Ones, there is not even dignity in death. Not even the room to cremate people. It is beyond, a nightmare beyond nightmares. The call i had today with a very strong willed Young Lady who is an act who absolutely broke down now because her father is really ill, she cant get treatment. He is dying of lack of oxygen. I dont know how long he is going to last. This is a real Life Situation and it is happening all over india, especially in delhi. We need the world to speed it up. Cut any red tape, just get whatever they can. All politics aside, get the aid to india, save people, save lives, and we can have a little investigation afterwards, or a big investigation, a little investigation afterwards, ora big investigation, into a little investigation afterwards, or a big investigation, into this huge Failure And Blunder by the government. The biggest clubs in English Football along with the sports Governing Bodies will boycott Social Media for four days, as part of efforts to fight racist abuse of players. The Action Due to begin on friday is an attempt to pressurise Twitter And Facebook to do more to combat online abuse. Angus crawford reports. 0n the pitch, a clear message there is no room for racism in football. But on Social Media its a different story. Players across the Game Report relentless, hate filled abuse. Enough is enough, you know . It has been happening for too long. I got it a year ago, boys are still getting it to this day, its 2021. You are getting racially abused online. Now, listen to this. The Blanket Ban will be staged across next Weekends Round of fixtures. For four days next weekend, English Football will go quiet. No facebook, instagram or twitter. Football has worked hard to stamp out racism within the grounds. But so far, its found it impossible to do the same on Social Media. This boycott is an attempt to redress that balance. I think it is just a great statement from all of football that its not acceptable, whats been happening is not acceptable. I think Social Media platforms and companies can do more. They know exactly what were doing, when we are doing it and when to sell us stuff when weve been looking at something only five minutes before on a different website. So they have the technology, we just want them to point it in the direction of removing hate, not just selling us stuff. Twitter says its improving its automated systems, with new filters and improved content moderation. Similar changes have been adopted by facebook and instagram. And, in an interview before news of the boycott, the Tech Giant said it was committed to fighting racism. We have worked really closely with educators, we worked really closely with Football Clubs to talk about how do we raise awareness, and how do we educate people that this is an issue of concern . But we do believe that everyone, whether its media, whether its corporations, whether its tech companies, everyone should be having these conversations. Four days of silence, then. A symbolic gesture, or a real attempt to rid football and Social Media of racism for good . Angus crawford, Bbc News. Paul mortimer is a former professional footabller who played for Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace and is now an anti discrimation campaigner. He said Social Media companies need to be putting regulations in place to deal with the perpetrators of abuse at this moment in time, i control you and terrorise you and verbally abuse you to within an inch of your life and Social Media and have no recourse and actually get away with it. Although we are looking at racism and racist behaviour, there are kids losing their own lives from online bullying. This is not a new thing, but football is so it might shines a spotlight on this and it is challenging the Social Media owners. They must have kids and people within their own lives who have suffered. They must want to do something morally. They must know this is wrong. If they dont do anything, we should have a blackout, but we should have it for a month, two months, whatever it is, to make them sit up and actually pay attention. Im not so sure four days will do that. Bomb disposal experts have been called after a car was stopped on the m25 in kent. After a police chase, a car was stopped using tactical contact. A spokesman said an Army Team attended as a precautionary measure but the motorway has since been reopened and they declared to the vehicle safe. A Senior Minister has denied claims that borisjohnson acted improperly over how the renovation of his downing Street Flat was paid for. The former number ten adviser Dominic Cummings has accused the Prime Minister of planning to ask conservative donors to pay for the work in secret Something Mr cummings described as foolish and possibly illegal. Heres our political correspondent, damian grammaticas, whose report contains some flashing images. Borisjohnson, his fiancee, and his Election Triumph putting them in downing street. But now, questions that wont go away. After they moved in, the flat there was redecorated cost, perhaps tens of thousands. But who funded it . 11 months later, kicked out, the Prime Ministers closest adviser Dominic Cummings. So did the Prime Minister, as he suggested, get a secret loan . The Trade Secretary was asked the question five times by andrew marr. My understanding is the costs have been covered by the prime Minister And Everything is being fully declared in line with the rules. Did a tory Party Donor lend him the money beforehand . As i said, he is covering the cost, and it is being complied with fully. The question is, did a donor provide the money beforehand . Andrew. That hes now paid back . I am spending my time in intense trade negotiations, getting a good deal for the united kingdom. I am not spending my time thinking about the downing Street Flat refurbishment. On sky, another side step. Its the most distrustful, awful environment. Its rather windy out here. For liz truss, it must have felt like there was incoming from all sides today. Borisjohnsons office say no laws or codes have been broken. At this matters because he has to declare a loan for electoral or tax purposes, orjust to show there is no conflict of interest. Cummingss claim about his former boss, labour say, fits a pattern. Whether its redecorations or privileged access to contracts in the pandemic, ministers must be transparent. The government have to answer why theyve given out billions of pounds of money to their cronies and theirfriends, and they wont even declare it through the current rules. Publish the members interests and ministers interests, and publish who is on that vip list, and tell us about where you are getting this money from, boris, to do up your flat. So, this is the storm unleashed by an adviser scorned and the questions that keep being asked. Damian grammaticas, Bbc News. It is guaranteed to be an 0scars like no other, broadcast live from a Train Station, honouring films that few people saw in Movie Theatres or cinemas, and reuniting hollywoods a listers for the first time after more than a year. The 0scars should be about film stars, red carpets, parties and champagne. This year theres a few little added extras, like covid tests, vaccine, and quarantine. It will be smaller, only nominees and one guest have been invited. The producer of aardmans shaun the Sheep Farmageddon will be among them. Im slightly nervous, if im really honest i think its kind of weird for a lot of us, weve spent over 12 plus months sitting in our houses, not really going out and socialising. And suddenly were going to be at this event. So, its a bit exciting, nervous, kind of unsure what to expect, but you know, to have the opportunity to go is fantastic. Composer and director Chris Bowers has been nominated for a concerto is a conversation, a short documentary about his family. Do you know what its going to be like . Yeah, they did tell us that its going to be something where they only have a certain amount of seats and the audience will be rotated in and out, so people are controlled in how many people are in a space at one time, i guess. People had to get tested and most people are vaccinated. Once you are on the premises, i think it is like masks off and it will definitely feel like, as normal as they can make it, which would be pretty wild, definitely the biggest event ive been to since covid started. So, finally, the Oscars Buzz is building. Oh, the finale is going to be sensational and were building to it now. You can feel it. When you when you see the transformation, of what is happening inside the station, and the wild anticipation you feel, your heart quickens. Because its so good. Certainly something we havent seen before this year, beth, but talk us through the actors, directors, films that you will be looking out for. She has cast professional and nonprofessional actors for the so theres a real service of it being drama but with a dash of nonfiction to it that makes it really naturalistic and compassionate, and it looks beautiful as well. No coincidence that this has been such a celebrated film. Sadly, we are not getting it in the uk until the end of the month, but hopefully the results will speak for themselves.
