To blow up an enquiry into. Last year. Medical experts are recommending that people who lose their sense of smell due to covid i9 are offered small training rather than steroids. Smell training. Hello and welcome if you re watching in the uk or around the world. Indias Supreme Court says the country is facing a National Emergency as its Healthcare System buckles under a second wave of coronavirus patients. Many hospitals are full, Oxygen Supplies are desperately low and the number of new cases is spiralling out of control. For the third day in a row, its registered the worlds highest ever daily rise in coronavirus infections. The latest figures show more than 340,000 new cases and more than 2,600 deaths. 0ur delhi correspondent Yogita Limaye was given access to the Emergency Ward of one hospital. Her report contains distressing scenes from the start. The front line an Emergency Room in a covid hospital, just about standing under the weight of an unfolding disaster. A patient who is hardly breathing is brought in. To get past the shortage of beds, they have packed in stretchers, wheelchairs as many as they can. But the first line of treatment against covid i9 is oxygen. And theyve almost run out. At this point, there isjust one hour of supply left. The staff knows how many lives hang in the balance. People are being turned away, but they dont know where theyll find oxygen or a bed. The Intensive Care Unit is full, too. There are next to no icu beds in a city of 20 million. There is no space, so a patient who needs an icu comes to the casualty, right . What do i do . There is no physical space. We put him on whatever support we can there, trying to organise a Bed Somewhere or other. But once there is no bed here, no physical space, as you can see, to put another trolley, what do we do . We can only do that much. Between seeing his patients, the doctor is constantly on calls. Back up just only a couple of hours, so we are struggling. We are struggling. Hes desperately trying to get more oxygen. Day after day, the staff works here, knowing full well that if their families get sick, even they will struggle to find medical care. There is helplessness and anger. The government, in some ways, failed in estimating what was going to happen, the needs that would arise if the numbers started rising. There was a sense of preparation in the earlier surge which seems to have disappeared in between. And they did things which was totally unacceptable allowing large, huge gatherings, which is totally unacceptable. They believed that we had vanquished the virus. Some oxygen arrives a bit later, but it can only last a few hours. Then, the struggle begins again. Yogita limaye, bbc news. Lets speak to the bbc s nikhil inamdar, Whojoins Me From Miraj in maharashtra state. It is the third day never that we have spoken and the third day in a row that india has registered the highest ever daily rising coronavirus inspections. If we look at the picture across the country, what is happening at a state level and the National Level to try to get and the National Level to try to get a grip on this . And the National Level to try to get a grip on this . Absolutely, i mean, it is a very. A grip on this . Absolutely, i mean, it is a very. Very a grip on this . Absolutely, i mean, it is a very, very grim a grip on this . Absolutely, i mean, it is a very, very grim picture it is a very, very grim picture across the country. If you look at the total tally of the last three days, india is now atjust under a million fresh new infections that we have been seeing, 340 plus thousand in the last 24 hours with more than 2600 people dying. This is the Third Straight day of a sort of global record that india has set. The Oxygen Situation in the country is particularly worrying. We have heard from a hospital in delhi which lost about 20 patients overnight and they have said they have 215 patients currently being operated with Oxygen Supplies at least in the morning with just about half an hour left so that gives you a sense, really, of the kind of situation that most hospitals in the country are battling. We have seen the Prime Minister, in fact, battling. We have seen the Prime Minister, infact, in battling. We have seen the Prime Minister, in fact, in stock with the Oxygen Supply situation yesterday and he has set in motion certain things including, for instance, Supply Luvvies and Supply Trains as well as moping in the Indian Air Force to try and mitigate the situation. Supply lorries. They have also been airlifting Oxygen Supplies from other countries and have warned of airlifting oxygen and allowing it to fussy borders but hopefully it looks precarious. Hopefully it looks precarious. Hopefully it looks precarious. Hopefully it will ease but for now it looks precarious. In hopefully it will ease but for now it looks precarious. Hopefully it will ease but for now it looks precarious. In terms of the ublic it looks precarious. In terms of the Public Health it looks precarious. In terms of the Public Health messaging, it looks precarious. In terms of the Public Health messaging, getting l Public Health messaging, getting people to isolate where necessary, how is that going, because presumably it is these small steps, as we have seen in other countries around the world, this absolutely fundamental to getting a grip on Infection Rates . Fundamental to getting a grip on Infection Rates . When it comes to lockdowns there Infection Rates . When it comes to lockdowns there is Infection Rates . When it comes to lockdowns there is a Infection Rates . When it comes to lockdowns there is a bit Infection Rates . When it comes to lockdowns there is a bit of Infection Rates . When it comes to lockdowns there is a bit of mixed | lockdowns there is a bit of mixed messaging here in india because we see states like the one where i am located under a severe lockdown banning Essential Services and similar steps have been taken in other states as well and there is a weakened lockdown that has been announced in the state of kerala and another indian state is mulling stricter restrictions, but when it comes to the Prime Minister or the central government, they have been heard saying a couple of days ago that a lockdown should be a measure of last resort and that gives you a hint of the fact that india is simply, at this point in time, and willing to look at a nationwide lockdown given the kind of devastating impact Something Like that has livelihoods, jobs and also on the economy. That has livelihoods, obs and also on the economy. That has livelihoods, obs and also on the economy. Thank you for that u date, on the economy. Thank you for that update. Our on the economy. Thank you for that update, our correspondent on the economy. Thank you for that update, our correspondent in update, our correspondent in maharashtra straight for us. State. Saba naqvi is a journalist and political commentator based in delhi. Thanks very much forjoining him on bbc news. Not only is this a very important story for you on a journalistic perspective at a very personal story as well because your father the deal. First of all, how is he . , father the deal. First of all, how ishe . , i, is he . So, i spent yesterday evening to auoin is he . So, i spent yesterday evening to going on is he . So, i spent yesterday evening to going on social is he . So, i spent yesterday evening to going on social media is he . So, i spent yesterday evening to going on social media trying is he . So, i spent yesterday evening to going on social media trying to i to going on social media trying to get my father a cylinder or a bed. I have paid to get him and oxygen bed but i have i have failed to get him and oxygen bed but i have managed to get a missed cylinder and it is only because i have a following on social media that someone on the gandhi family delivered if cylinder to his home so we have got through one night. Today, i have found there is no bed available. Just as the doherty reported from delhi, the doctor who i know has been giving advice, there is just nothing we can do, so i know has been giving advice, there isjust nothing we can do, so i make a couple of very, very pick them quick points. First, one of the fundamental problems with india is that we have only spent a tiny percentage of our gdp on health, just havent invested in hell. Number two, just havent invested in hell. Numbertwo, coronavirus just havent invested in hell. Number two, coronavirus caught the whole world unawares and our politics right now is of symbolism, grand events, and we have had this huge gathering of hindu sages and others in a city in the north and they have said that these people are divinely protected and that is just due to continue. The Prime Minister himself has been campaigning vigorously in Eastern State Of West Bengal where the capital city of. Is and it has been only in tremendous political criticism with a one day of campaigning was shut down. , a one day of campaigning was shut down. ,. , a one day of campaigning was shut down. , , a one day of campaigning was shut down. ,. , ,. , down. There has clearly been a huge amount of criticism down. There has clearly been a huge amount of criticism of down. There has clearly been a huge amount of criticism of these down. There has clearly been a huge amount of criticism of these mass i amount of criticism of these mass gatherings, whether it has been the political valleys of religious reasons have been allowed to go ahead. Ivejust reasons have been allowed to go ahead. Ive just struck listening to what she said to me first of all about your father, how someone like you who has lots of contacts, you are able to get him some help but it was still a scramble so if that is a situation for you, what must it be like that is a situation for you, what must it be like for so many people who dont have this sort of access are context to get help for their families . Access are context to get help for theirfamilies . So access are context to get help for their families . Their families . So here is what i think. Their families . So here is what i think this their families . So here is what i think. This virus, their families . So here is what i think. This virus, what their families . So here is what i think. This virus, what it their families . So here is what i think. This virus, what it is their families . So here is what i | think. This virus, what it is doing to us now, it is 20 times worse than what happened was last year. Last year was lockdown and we didnt have people dying and gasping on the streets so ijust hear silence over time, i hearsirens and streets so ijust hear silence over time, i hear sirens and what i think is happening is an x ray of how poor and how we have invested in essential Public Health and it is an x ray vision of what we really are and that is what i am feeling today. Party leaders of various parties reach out for me. Priyanka gandhi, god bless her, she got cylinders into my home but i have not been able to get a decent oxygen bed, and evenif able to get a decent oxygen bed, and even if i get. Hagar able to get a decent oxygen bed, and even ifi get even if i get. How does that feel, ou even if i get. How does that feel, you know. Even if i get. How does that feel, you know. Here even if i get. How does that feel, you know, here in even if i get. How does that feel, you know, here in the even if i get. How does that feel, you know, here in the uk, even if i get. How does that feel, you know, here in the uk, and even if i get. How does that feel, l you know, here in the uk, and there are such strong links between the uk and india, and there, and so many families in the uk feeling desperately worried for their loved ones in india, here in the uk all along the messaging has been, we must not allow the nhs, the National Health service to be overwhelmed by this virus, we can see that it is happening in india. How does it feel to be in the middle of that and desperately trying to get help, in this case, feel farther . You desperately trying to get help, in this case, feel farther . This case, feelfarther . You know, i have lived in this case, feelfarther . You know, i have lived in the this case, feelfarther . You know, i have lived in the uk this case, feelfarther . You know, i have lived in the uk briefly, this case, feelfarther . You know, i have lived in the uk briefly, i have lived in the uk briefly, i wasnt nhs, everyone in the uk criticises it, it looks like a dream to me, sitting right here there is no Public Health. The hospital is public and private hospitals, there are some Public Health but they are so overcrowded and so overburdened and the government has actually been spending the last few decades dismantling public help in handing everything over to the private sector so, you know, that is what we have been doing here, so, you know, this is an x ray of what we really are, how people are just going to die out there, and im hoping tomorrow i will get a bed for my father but who knows . And, you know . We must leave it there. You talk about criticism of the nhs and i think here in the uk everybody is extremely grateful for the nhs but really a desperate situation in the hospital there and i do wish your father well and i hope he makes a speedy recovery. Thank you very much for talking to was that from delhi. Here in the uk, the Prime Minister has dismissed the claims of his former adviser, Dominic Cummings, who questioned his competence and integrity in an online blog. Mr cummings alleged mrjohnson had considered trying to stifle an inquiry into a leak last year, in case it implicated a friend of his fiancee. The claim has been denied by number ten. Mr cummings also said the Prime Minister had plans for donors to pay for the renovation of his flat. The former conservative Attorney General said the government is run by a cronies stick about. That general said the government is run by a cronies stick about. By a cronies stick about. That is ust one by a cronies stick about. That is just one indication by a cronies stick about. That is just one indication of by a cronies stick about. That is just one indication of the by a cronies stick about. That is just one indication of the chaos| just one indication of the chaos that mrjohnson seems to bring in his wake and the reason for that is because he is a vacuum of integrity and this has been apparent for very long time, apparent to my colleagues who, i regret to say, elected him or him to be elected as leader of the Conservative Party and if you have someone who is a vacuum of integrity youre going to get the sort of story coming up over and over again. The Prime Minister says that nobody gives a monkeys about Downing Street leaks but mr cummings claims are serious, as a Political Correspondent explains. There are some very serious allegations made by the man who was his political adviser who guided him through some of his biggest successes, dont leave, eu, election triumph, and if we go through what Dominic Cummings said in his blog post last night, first of all i think the most serious worries about Downing Street renovations to the part the Prime Minister lives in and he said a plan that the Prime Minister discussed with him to have donors secretly pay for the renovation which, mr cummings said were unethical, foolish, possibly illegal, almost certainly broke the rules on proper disclosure of political donations if conducted in the way he intended. Number ten says on that one that government and ministers have acted in accordance with codes of conduct and electoral law on donations and the Prime Minister has paid himself of those works. Second issue, leak enquiry, last year, it is in the second lockdown, briefed to the papers early and enquiry going on in Downing Street and borisjohnson apparently tells mrjohnson that he wants to stop that enquiry and what mr cummings said was i told him this was mad and totally unethical and he could not possibly cancel an enquiry about a leak that affected millions just because it might implicate his girlfriends friends. And it was a Prime Ministers fiance, apparently a leak was pointing to one of her friends and finally, i think the most damaging thing, no way, was that Dominic Cummings was drawing together all of the swirl of allegations and accusations we have seen and said it is sad to see the Prime Minister in his Office Following so below the standards of integrity and confidence country deserves. , ,. , deserves. So, where does this go from here . Deserves. So, where does this go from here . And deserves. So, where does this go from here . And other deserves. So, where does this go from here . And other enquiry . I deserves. So, where does this go. From here . And other enquiry . Uk deserves. So, where does this go from here . And other enquiry . Uk by minister having to give evidence before an enquiry . Minister having to give evidence before an enquiry . Well, the Labour Pa Sa S before an enquiry . Well, the labour party says the before an enquiry . Well, the labour party says the thing before an enquiry . Well, the labour party says the thing that before an enquiry . Well, the labour party says the thing that they before an enquiry . Well, the labour party says the thing that they think. Party says the thing that they think needs inquiring into is this question around the flat which involves money and decisions by the Prime Minister at the heart of Downing Street. The Electoral Commission is looking into, it says, whether any donation should have been reported but the labour party says it wants to know and wants a transparent enquiry if the party has paid for it, how much, where did the money come from, was that in any form of a loan to him, should that have been declared, questions will be raised about should there be any Tax Implications that the Prime Minister should be declaring if he has had the benefit of a loan as well, so a whole new method to enquiry in all of the swell of things we have seen but also Dominic Cummings himself is going to be appearing before parliament next month and says he is happy to answer any questions and clearly has a man who wants to talk. Irate any questions and clearly has a man who wants to talk. Any questions and clearly has a man who wants to talk. We now speak to a olitical who wants to talk. We now speak to a Political Correspondent who wants to talk. We now speak to a Political Correspondent and who wants to talk. We now speak to a Political Correspondent and former. Political correspondent and former party adviser. Joanne, good to have you with us. I spoke slowly to the Committee On Standards In Public Life and he said the biggest question for him, as far as he was concerned, from these allegations is the question of competence, the competence of borisjohnson. Would you agree that . Would you make of these allegations . These allegations . Yes, i mean, i think if you these allegations . Yes, i mean, i think if you take these allegations . Yes, i mean, i think if you take all these allegations . Yes, i mean, i think if you take all of these allegations . Yes, i mean, i think if you take all of the think if you take all of the allegations as individual allegations as individual allegations then each of them raises allegations then each of them raises a slightly different point, some more damaging than others but, yes, i would agree with that assessment. I would agree with that assessment. I think that the danger of these latest allegations is they, sort of, bring together a number of issues which go to how the General Public perceives borisjohnson and his government. Do they see it as competent . Do they see it as efficient . 0r competent . Do they see it as efficient . Or do they see it as slightly haphazard and everything slightly haphazard and everything slightly chaotic . And the picture that putting all of these things together creates is that, actually, it is rather chaotic, things are done on the fly, not with the proper scrutiny, and sometimes perhaps that works out the best and we had this tremendously successful vaccine roll out that nobody can delay the questions need to be asked about how the decisions were made to reach that success, if you like. Questions also but the that success, if you like. Questions also but the public that success, if you like. Questions also but the public and that success, if you like. Questions | also but the public and conservative voters think of this and then the separate issue of political pressure. Potentially, do you think of the Boris Johnson pressure. Potentially, do you think of the borisjohnson to need to appearfor some sort of of the borisjohnson to need to appear for some sort of enquiry to give evidence on this in order to ensure that the transparency . Weill. Ensure that the transparency . Well, otentiall. Ensure that the transparency . Well, Potentiallv I Ensure that the transparency . Well, potentially. I mean ensure that the transparency . Well, potentially. I mean the ensure that the transparency . Ii potentially. I mean the government and the Prime Minister have said that there will be an enquiry into how the whole pandemic has been managed and i think to a certain extent if they can siphon all of these things off into that kind of enquiry which has got a more global approach then it will be to their advantage. A lot of these accusations are very specific and very micro, if you like, and they require really delving right down into the weeds and, as they say, a wider enquiry into the pandemic handling is actually slightly off to the left of some of these points that have been raised here and because, in many ways, the government, i think, because, in many ways, the government, ithink, has been because, in many ways, the government, i think, has been very successful, certainly in the last three or four months with a vaccine roll out, that rather distracts from anything specific that has been raised here. So anything specific that has been raised here. Anything specific that has been raised here. ,. ,. , raised here. So if there is more of a laser focus raised here. So if there is more of a laser focus on raised here. So if there is more of a laser focus on the raised here. So if there is more of a laser focus on the set raised here. So if there is more of a laser focus on the set of a laser focus on the set of allegations made by Dominic Cummings, how damaging, ultimately, do you think that could be for the Prime Minister . I do you think that could be for the Prime Minister . Do you think that could be for the Prime Minister . I think there could be very damaging Prime Minister . I think there could be very damaging if, Prime Minister . I think there could be very damaging if, as Prime Minister . I think there could be very damaging if, as i Prime Minister . I think there could be very damaging if, as i say, Prime Minister . I think there could be very damaging if, as i say, it. Be very damaging if, as i say, it leads to a Running Narrative about hisjudgment and certainly leads to a Running Narrative about his judgment and certainly some of the stories that have been coming out of Downing Street, whether they are true or not suggest somebody who doesnt really grasp the metal of a number of things and is slightly being led by his friends and a Lack Ofjudgment and is doing things, as i say on the fly, without proper vote the cost of Civil Service rules. To a certain extent, Dominic Cummings is orwas rules. To a certain extent, Dominic Cummings is or was involved in all of that because he felt that the Civil Service was something of a break and what the government wanted to achieve, and, as we know, you really wanted to see some wholesale root and Branch Reform of the Civil Service but, nonetheless, there are rules which ministers and the Prime Minister, obviously, is supposed to observe, and if it becomes apparent that these rules have not been observed, but i think it really does create a sense that borisjohnson isnt sufficiently in charge of his government. Medical experts are recommending that people who lose their sense of smell due to covid 19 are offered Smell Training rather than being treated with steroids. They suggest patients sniff different odours over a period of months to retrain the brain to recognise smells. Professor Carl Philpott is a Smell Loss Expert from the University Of East Anglias Norwich Medical School and director of the smell and taste clinic Atjames Paget Hospital in gorleston. But are happy with us. So, typically, around one in five people who have had covid experience a Loss Of Smell and come on average, how long do they lose that sense for . Professor, i dont think you can hear this, unfortunately. Lets just keep trying. Can you hear me . No, unfortunately, he cant. We will try to get back to him if we can. Indonesian military have announced they have a covered day pre believed to be from the submarine that went missing on friday. Such teams are trying to find that the vessel which has 53 people on board. We got the latest from jakarta. Latest from jakarta. According to the authorities, latest from jakarta. Research will continue and they will focus on the death of 850 metres, the depth of 850 metres, which was way beyond the Survival Pull Limits of the submarine, which can only withstand at a depth of around 500 metres. A family of people who were on board was still hoping that part of theirFamily Member on board was still hoping that part of their Family Member could be on board was still hoping that part of theirFamily Member could be is survived by this accident, and, actually, the authorities havent been saying about the fate of the people on board and they say that they will still try to evacuate the people on board. We they will still try to evacuate the people on board. They will still try to evacuate the people on board. We return now to the story about people on board. We return now to the story about loss people on board. We return now to the story about loss of people on board. We return now to the story about Loss Of Smell people on board. We return now to the story about Loss Of Smell after| the story about Loss Of Smell after covid and the idea that small trading rather than the use of steroids is a better way to try to restore your sense of smell. I hope you can hear is this time around. I was saying just a moment ago that around one in five people who had covid expense and loss of sense of smell. Typically, how long do they lose that sensible . For smell. Typically, how long do they lose that sensible . Smell. Typically, how long do they lose that sensible . For those people caettin lose that sensible . For those people getting smell lose that sensible . For those people getting smell loss, lose that sensible . For those people getting smell loss, up lose that sensible . For those people getting smell loss, up to lose that sensible . For those people getting smell loss, up to 34 lose that sensible . For those people getting smell loss, up to 34 weeks | getting smell loss, up to 3 4 weeks in total and getting it back but we think about 10 of people are getting persistent problems that last for many months and if you go by the number of infections in the uk today, we estimate that that may now be around 300,000 people in the uk today that have persistent problems with smell loss or distortion. So problems with smell loss or distortion. Problems with smell loss or distortion. , ,. , distortion. So why is Smell Training rather than distortion. So why is Smell Training rather than steroids distortion. So why is Smell Training rather than steroids better . Distortion. So why is Smell Training rather than steroids better . Is distortion. So why is Smell Training rather than steroids better . Is a i rather than steroids better . Is a urou rather than steroids better . Is a arou of rather than steroids better . Is a group of experts. Rather than steroids better . I3. Group of experts, we looked at the evidence for Steroid Usage and that is really Steroid Tablets specifically and we couldnt see that there was any evidence that could benefit and, of course, steroids have side effect. Probably, in reality, if steroids are going to work that is going to be at the very onset of the problem but, of course, as most people recover it would be unrealistic to give everybody steroids are what were saying is for those people who are believed to have a problem the safest and most persistent option is to go through this process called Smell Training. Briefly, what is the process and what can people do at home to retrain the brain and the nose . Well, good sources at the cavity s website fifth sense where there is information about what you can find information about what you can find in the Kitchen Cupboard at home to take the process of Smell Training forward and, very simply, it is about twice a day picking at least four things to put under your nose and to train with and they should be smell is that you are familiar with before the problem started so dont try Anything Fancy that is new, just go with things that you understood what they smelled like before the problem started. What they smelled like before the problem started. Something that you could recognise problem started. Something that you could recognise if problem started. Something that you could recognise if you problem started. Something that you could recognise if you smell problem started. Something that you could recognise if you smell it could recognise if you smell it again. Thank you very much for talking to us about that. A professor from the University Of East Anglia Norwich Medical School. Also a member of the smell and taste clinic at a hospital. Im never look at the weather forecast. Time now for a look at the weather forecast. This extraordinarily dry spell of april weather continues and for most of us is a lot of sunshine be had, turning a little hazy in places due to some areas of wispy, dry cloud but through the week and it will stay dry. Well turn a bit cooler, particularly by tomorrow, there will be some high smothers as well but High Pressure remains in charge of that in keeping things largely dry. The winds around the southern flank will be quite brisk so you notice the strength of the wind through this afternoon around the beaches of the south coast and certainly across the south coast and certainly across the channel islands. Therell be areas of patchy high cloud here and theyre turning that sunshine hazy but for most it is a fine and Sunny Afternoon and a relatively warm one, especially across western areas, with coasts of north devon and cornwall, west wales, north west england, counties of Northern Ireland most favoured for the highest temperatures, 18, 19, possibly 20 degrees, but for of us high levels of tree pollen cb bear that in mind if you are hay fever sufferer. Through this evening and tonight it looks like a guy with long clear spells but generally we will see a bit more cloud developing across the eastern and pattering them, maybe into mid wales, admits that even there, temperatures in many places staying just above freezing and we are most likely to have a full submission of the scotland and into my womb we stick with a dry theme for most of us in good spells of sunshine but there will be a bit more cloud developing especially across eastern england, some of that filtering into the midlands and east wales, quite windy once again down towards the south and that wind coming in from the east, coming in quite a chilly direction, actually, so that they will take the edge of the temperatures, just 10 degrees their knowledge, maybe 13 in plymouth. Highest values are parts of Northern Ireland, North West Scotland In Western england, up to around 70 degrees. If youre looking for some rain as i know many people are the subtle Frontal System will bring some rain across scotland, maybe the odd shower into Northern Ireland and Northern England but envies will stay dry with some areas of sunshine, temperatures 11 16 , but some of that rain in the north will put southwards but it will tend to fizzle and feet about peter out with southern areas not feeling much in the way of wet weather, largely dry but turning a bit colder in the week.
